Politics › Lagos ACN Assures Non-indigenes Ofsafety by abu12(op): 10:46pm On Jul 31, 2013 |
The Publicity Secretary of Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, Lagos State, Mr. Joe IgbokweLAGOS State chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has urged the Igbo and other ethnic groups in the state to disregard those behind ‘cheap and dirty politics that the state isno longer suitable for non-indigenes’. Urging the Igbo particularly to go on with their businesses as the state will continue to grant them necessary support, the ACN, in a statement yesterday by the Publicity Secretary,Mr. Joe Igbokwe, said the decision of the state government to move some homeless, indigent citizens to their home-states for rehabilitation, was not targeted at any particular ethnic group. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA),Onitsha Branch, has condemned the expulsion of over 70 Nigerians from Lagos State to Onitsha, Anambra State, by people suspected to be agents of Lagos government. The NBA statement, signed by Mr. Dennis C. Maduachesi and Steve .O. Ononye, chairman and secretary respectively, and made availableto The Guardian yesterday, added “it is totally deplorable that at the level of development in Nigeria when governments are building bridgesof relationship, a government that should be seen as being responsible will be involved in such irresponsible act. The NBA consequently called on the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, to commence full investigation into the matter with a view to determining the identities of the people behind such deportation together with the policemen who accompanied them to carry out such nefarious act. According to Igbokwe, “ACN is particularly irked by the decision of some professional chance-takers and political opportunists to takeadvantage of the recent movement of some indigent, homeless and social miscreants to Onitsha for the purpose of re-connecting with their families when they have no tangible business in Lagos. “To put the records straight, the Lagos State government, with its commitment to the interests of Lagosians and in its effort to build a functional modern mega-city, had long embarked on the decision to pick up the many derelicts, the homeless, beggars and social miscreants that inhabit all parts of Lagos, cleanthem up, find means of livelihood for those that are employable and send those it cannot manage to their respective states”, the statement said. According to ACN, the scheme has seen the practical reduction in the number of the beggars, street urchins and social miscreants that used to constitute real danger to lives in Lagos and has seen such people being moved back to their various states, mainly in the North. We should note also that other states in the South, including South-West, have receivedsuch people and the Lagos State government has been careful to ensure that the number of people involved in such periodic movements are minimal and are only people who do not have where to stay in Lagos, who don’t have any real engagement in Lagos and who constitute nuisance to other Lagosians. Igbokwe said: “We also put the nation on notice that before the latest movement of some people to Onitsha, we notified the Anambra State government, which neither responded nor took action on our complaint. We also want the public to note that the Lagos State government was involved in similar deal with the Akwa Ibom State government when some indigent Lagosians were moved back from Akwa Ibom State to Lagos. We want Nigerians to note that such movements are common with nearly all states in Nigeria and are becoming an issue just because selfish politicians and ethnic reapers who were prominent in the despoliation of the country see it as new and worth cashing in on. http://www.osundefender.org/?p=114298 |

Politics › 2015: Northern Elders, Youths Endorse Jonathan by abu12(op): 12:05pm On Jul 27, 2013 |
By Henry Umoru ABUJA- AHEAD the 2015 Presidential election, Northern elders and youths yesterday stormed the National Secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Abuja to endorse President Goodluck Jonathan for the exalted position, just as they pleaded with him to make himself available and vie. The elders and youths came under the aegis of three groups, Northern Elders Forum, North/South New Nigeria Forum, Fresh Air Continuity Group of North West and Northern PDP Youth. The groups – led by a former Education Minister under the late Gen Abacha’s regime and former Presidential Aspirant of All Nigerian Peoples Party, ANPP, Dr Dauda Birmah, on a solidarity visit to the PDP national Chairman of PDP, AlhajiBamanga Tukur – declared that the North would ever be grateful to the PDP led Government of President Jonathan for creating a conducive atmosphere that made the release of the former Chief Security Adviser to late Sani Abacha, MajorHamza Al-Mustapha possible after over 14 yearsof incarceration. They however hailed Jonathan over the release from prison of Major Hamza al-Mustapha, just asthey promised to get most voters in the north, especially North West to support and vote for him. Dauda Birma, said “Goodluck Jonathan’s leadership has been rated as the best administration so far. With what Jonathan has done in Maiduguri, I can affirm that the city is now safer than most parts of the country”. According to him, Major Mustapha’s release would not have been possible by the ordinary fiat of the court if not for the underground work of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur and the consent of the executive of the President Jonathan led administration, adding that the Groups decided to come out openly to appreciate the exemplary leadership qualities of the President Jonathan since assumption of office which had been unprecedented in the anal of Nigeria. He said they were also at the PDP National Secretariat to correct insinuations that the People of the North especially the North- West Zone were against his Presidential ambition come 2015, adding that the release of Major Al-Mustapha had further fuelled the supports of the North for the re election of President Jonathan come 2015. The leaders of the three Groups, Hajia Nana Abdulkadri, Mallam Mohammed Omeri and Ibrahim Mohammed in their remarks expressed their appreciation for the release of the former CSO and acknowledged the roles of the leadership of the Party and the President and as well dismissed the wrong notion that the North in general was against the Presidential ambition of Dr Jonathan come 2015. Responding, Alhaji Tukur said that it was a thing of joy for him for three different Groups to come at the same time to appreciate openly the achievements of the PDP led administration of President Jonathan at this point in time when wrong impressions were being created that all was not well in the country. According to him, “to me, this is democracy in action, people will agree with you, people will also disagree with you, we can not see things the same way at all times, when we see good things we should celebrate like these groups are doing now, celebrate good things, celebrate democracy, celebrate justice, don’t be intimidated by others, this is your country, hold it firmly” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/07/2015-northern-elders-youth-endorse-jonathan/ |

Politics › Nobody Forced Me To Accept Islam, Convert Insists by abu12(op): 9:03am On Jul 27, 2013 |
The conversion to Islam of 25-year-oldCharity Uzoechina, daughter ofPastor Raymond Uzoechinaof Redeem Christian Church of God, Kwankwashe, Suleja, continues to generate controversy. Her father accused the Estu Nupe Alhaji Yahaya Abubukar, of hypnotizing his daughter, who has since changed her name to A’isha, to embrace Islam. A’isha, who hails from Asaba, Delta State, came to Abuja at the age of 10 when her father relocated from Lagos. After hersecondary school education at Army Day Secondary School Asokoro, Abuja she got admission into Federal Polytechnic, Bida to read Public Administration. She, however, withdrew from the course in her first year. She embraced Islam on February 15, 2013. A’isha said since her family relocated to Suleja, Niger State, she has been in the midst of Muslims, which accorded her the opportunity to have several Muslims friends and learnt a lot about Islam. The travails of A’isha began when she ran to the Estu Nupe’s palace in Bida on March 1, this year to seek protection against any aggression she may face should her family know about her conversion to Islam. This led toa controversy that is still ongoing, with her father accusing the traditional ruler of kidnapping his daughter. Along the line, severalmeetings were organized between A’isha and her father Pastor Uzoechina and his daughter atthe instance of the Estu Nupe, who also involved some members of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN). But despite that, A’isha refused to follow her father, alleging that he has threatened to deal with her by taking her away to a place that she will not be able to practice her new religion. A’isha has taken the matter to a Shariah court in Bida and the court is expected to rule on August 1, 2013 whether or not the 25-year-old should be released to her parents or not. She speaks exclusively to Weekly Trust.Excerpts:
Weekly Trust: What is your name? Aisha Uzoechina:I was formerly known as Charity Uzoechina and now A’isha Uzoechina.
Why the change of name? I changed my name because I have accepted Islam.
What brought you to Bida? I came to Bida in 2012 to read Public Administration at the Federal Polytechnic, Bida. Are you still a student of Federal Polytechnic Bida? No, I am not. I have withdrawn from the school.
Did you go back home? No, I did not go home. At the beginning I was planning to go back home, because I wanted totell my father that I have converted to Islam. When I converted, I was afraid to tell my parents, because of the way my father would behave. I know he will not take it lightly with me. So, for that I refused to go back home. Did anybody force or enticed you to join Islam? I joined Islam on my own. Nobody enticed me with anything to join Islam. What informed your decision to join Islam? I converted to Islam because I love the character of Muslims, particularly the way they behave. You know Muslims believe in God. I have Muslim friends and I watch what they do, that enticed me to join Islam. I used to read Qur’an when I was a Christian. I always join them to read Qur’an and through that I found out that it is the same one God they worship. How did your father come to know about your change of faith? When I ran to the palace, I told you, it was verydifficult before I could see the Emir. When I saw him, the emir refused to accept me, because my father did not know about it. He, therefore, collected my father’s number from me and called him. The following day my father came and said he wanted to see me. When we met we talked one on one.
What did you tell him? Well the emir told him that I have converted to Islam. When my father talked to me, he said let’s go home, but I refused. I told him that I will not change my faith, because I have already accepted Islam and this is where I wantto stay. He, therefore, threatened me so much so that I became scared of him.
What did he do to you amounting to a threat? In the first place you know, I put on Hijab (veil),he said I should remove the Hijab. He was angry and used some harsh words on me, directing that I should remove the Hijab, but I refused. He threatened to take me to a village where nobody will set his eyes on me. So I became scared of him, therefore I refused to follow him. That is it.
Did the emir intervene? The emir gave him one week to come back, buthe came back even before it reached one week. He said he must take me home. He will not take me to our house, but he’ll take me to somewhere that nobody will set his eyes on me. I quickly ran back to the emir and to the Shari’a Court for protection. I don’t want to go back to my father, because he is threatening me. How did you come to know about the Shari’a Court? I found out from people. I went to them on my own to formally lodge my complaint.
Why Shari’a Court? They have to protect me. You know when you take a case to court over life threatening issue, the court must protect you. That is it.
Did your father come back after you refused to follow him? He came back. He kept on coming back. The other time he even threatened to bring some people to kidnap me.
Is it true that at a time your father came with the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) officials to you?
Yes.
Is it true that you also went to the Jama’atul Nasril Islam (JNI)?
Yes.
Why did you go to JNI? I told you and I’ll still repeat it, though I don’t want to repeat my words again. I want them to intervene on my behalf, the threat is too much. Now I can’t go anywhere, I cannot even continue with my schooling. I cannot do anything because of the way he has been threatening me. He is still bringing people up till now to keep watch on me.
How do you know that your father has assignedpeople to keep watch on you? There was a time that I wanted to go out, information came to me that my father was around and I had to stay back since I don’t want him to take me away. I know that if I goutanytime,I he’ll pick me up.
How did you come to know about JNI? I have been reading about them. That is why I went to them. How did you present your case to JNI? I wrote to them seeking for their intervention, because I do not know how to go about convincing my father. I also learnt that the emir wanted to hand me over to my father, because the burden of my case is becoming too much for him to bear.
If your father should promise to allow you to practice your new faith, will you go with him? I’ll not. In a family that you are the only Muslim, how can you practice in that house? You know when he (my father) came along with my mother the other time, his actions and the harsh words he used, even if I go back home, my life will not be secured in his hand. That is why I said I’ll not go.
Did you start learning anything about Islam? Yes, I started learning how to perform ablution. I have learnt how to recite Surah Al-Fatihah, I am now in my second surah. Do you pray five times a day? Yes I do. I am even fasting now. I have been fasting since the beginning of the month of Ramadan. What is your massage to people wanting to join Islam? I have only one massage. Islam is good. Muslims are truthful, everything they say, they believe in God and they carry people along. Once a person converted to Islam, he’ll be carried along until he is strong to stand on his own. What is your appeal to your parent? I am appealing to my parents not to be angry with me. My conversion to Islam will not separate us. I still love them, even though I amhere. They can come and visit me and I can also visit them. They shouldn’t think my new faith will take away the love I have for them. It will not. I am very sorry. http://weeklytrust.com.ng/index.php/top-stories/13449-nobody-forced-me-to-accept-islam-convert-insists

Politics › Akpabio’s Governors Forum Snubbed By PDP States by abu12(op): 8:09am On Jul 25, 2013 |
Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom and Chairman PDP Governors Forum, has called on Rivers state warring factions to sheath their swords for peace to reign in the state.
He made the call at the end of the forum`s emergency meeting which ended at the early hours of Thursday in Abuja, the Nigerian capital.
The meeting was snubbed by half of PDP statesas it was attended by only eight governors from Akwa Ibom, Delta, Bayelsa, Benue, Kogi, Enugu, Abia, and Kastina states. Four states, Bauchi, Kwara, Plateau and Kaduna states sent their deputy governors. There are 24 states under the control of PDP in Nigeria. Akpabio, who read a communiqué of the meeting to newsmen, said that the meeting was called to discuss the party`s forthcoming national convention and other national issues.
He described the happenings in the Rivers House of Assembly as “unfortunate’’, adding that the warring factions in the states should embrace peace in the interest of democracy and good governance. The governors said that this was necessary to ensure the growth of democracy in the state.
“ We had deliberated lots of issues, the first being the forthcoming party special South Westzonal congresses and special national convention.
“And we felt there is need to brief PDP Governors about the just inaugurated Special South West Zonal Congresses and the Special National Convention Planning Committee and the dates fixed for the convention,’’ Akpabio said. He pledged the forum`s support to the PDP leadership, saying that the governors would mobilise their delegates to ensure a hitch free South West zonal congresses and special national convention.
The governor said that the forum had meanwhile resolved to be rotating its monthly meetings among PDP states, while its emergence meetings would still be held in Abuja.
He said that it would ensure interaction among PDP Governors while they met with grass root people as well as visit projects carried out by PDP governors in their respective states.
“This will increase the bond among us and will lead to peer review among us and extend our love and friendship. “The starting point will be Bayelsa. The state will be hosting the first PDP Governors Forum in September while Kastina state will host the next one in October.’’ Akpabio said.
He said that most governors, especially those from the North could not attend the meeting because they travelled for the Muslim Umral. He commiserated with the first lady for the death of her mother, who passed on in a car accident earlier in the week. http://pmnewsnigeria.com/2013/07/25/akpabios-governors-forum-snubbed-by-pdp-states/ |

Acidosis: Wow, thats a very f00lish decision
The ASUU I know will never join anyone (not even the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities) in any solidarity rubbish.
The problem with our lecturers is: They think PhD equates Large, Fat money.. Too many demands.. high expectation.
Some of these profs, earn between N700,000 - N1,000,000 basic salary monthly. Plus sabaticals, free lecture hours (for business), other income from affiliate programs (Pre-degree, Post-Graduate, Professional degrees etc), allowances, visiting lecturers to other schools (not free), consultancy (not free), books and publications (for sale) etc.. They keep complaining about the time spent writing journals (journals meant for their OWN quick promotion, money, not STUDENTS).
Yet they keep comparing themselves with people who earn average sums working almost 20hours a day without any opportunity to do other works.
Now it would be very foolish for NLC to tell someone who earn N20K a month to sit at home in solidarity for a group of people who do not care about their existence. Bros are you related to minister of education or what ? list of ASUU demand.

Politics › NLC Threatens To Join ASUU Strike by abu12(op): 5:06am On Jul 24, 2013 |
The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has threatened to join the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, in solidarity strike if the Federal Government failed to address the ASUU demands. NLC President, Abdulwaheed Omar, made the threat at the opening ceremony of the “2013 Rain School” in Uyo. “We call on the Federal Government to have meaningful dialogue with ASUU with a view to implementing the agreement. “The state governments should equally obey the law and pay minimum wage to teachers and the local government workers as well as the 27.5 per cent teacher’s enhanced salaries. “Should these strikes persist, workers of Nigeria will not hesitate to join them in solidarity,” he stressed. Omar said the modules of the rain school were designed to train members of affiliate unions and state councils of the NLC. “This is in order to equip them with necessary skills to empower and protect their rights at workplace.” He said that the theme of the 2013 Rain Schoolwas imperative due to the obvious violation of workers’ rights in the workplace and in the larger society. The Akwa Ibom Chairman of NLC, Mr Unyime Usoro, commended the leadership of the congress for keeping to its promise on making Uyo the permanent host of the school. “On our own part, we intend to ensure that the standards set five years ago that led to the permanent hosting right is not lowered. “It is significant to note that the government ofAkwa Ibom has graciously approved the building of the permanent block for Rain Schools here in Uyo to gather for the training needs of the union leaders across the nation,” he said. The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that the theme of the occasion was: “Strengthening the trade Union for Defence of Workers’ Rights.” http://pmnewsnigeria.com/2013/07/23/nlc-threatens-to-join-ASUU-strike/ |

Sincere 9gerian: Nonsense! GEJ is the President of Nigeria today due to providence. First it was the DO-OR-DIE politics of OBJ that imposed Yar Adua and GEJ on Nigeria. Next, the death of Yar Adua meant GEJ automatically became president of Nigeria. In both situations, the Nigerian people (from north to south) had NO say.
The question now is, with GEJ as president, what manner of politics should the southeast play? Should the southeast oppose and fight GEJ like some elements from the far north are currently doing? Should the southeast use the Boko Haram method to make the country ungovernable for GEJ? Should the southeast cooperate with GEJ and at the same time attract more federal projects and appointments?
You can make your choice, but I think the best option is the politics of cooperation with GEJ. With this option, the southeast will attract more federal projects and be the front runner zone in the politics of 2019. Whether we like it or not, if GEJ wins re-election in 2015, he'll be the king maker, atleast at the primary election level, in 2019.
But personally, besides the psychology of having someone from ones tribe occupy the number one position, I'm not really keen on this tribal politics stuff. All I desire for Nigeria and for the southeast is development, development and DEVELOPMENT. Haba oga, na kulikuli and bread wey u dey eat na him dey affect your brain? Politics › PDP Will Die Soon - Governor Nyako by abu12(op): 6:25am On Jul 23, 2013 |
Adamawa State governor Murtala Nyako has disclosed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is being plagued by a serious illness and that some critical stakeholdersare awaiting its death to give it a befitting burial. Nyako, who stated this in an emotion-laden voice while speaking on BBC Hause Service afternoon programme (Shirin Rana) yesterday, added that some of the stakeholders only deemed it fitto remain in the party due to the political positions they are occupying and, in case the party failed to survive its self-inflicted illness, they will give it a befitting burial after its demise. He said, “People are saying that the PDP is dead or about to die but a concerned person like me will remain in the party till it dies and give it a befitting burial. If PDP willdie, let it die in our hands so that we will give it a befitting burial and mourn her.” He said the party is currently goingthrough its worst times as a result of the highhandedness and anarchy with which the leadership of the party at the National level isaddressing issues. It is responsiblefor the internal crisis that has plagued the party for a long time, he stated. “The problem of the party lies withthose stalwarts in Abuja that have succeeded in putting the party in a state of coma, and it is our fervent hope that they will be prevailed upon to do the right thing so that the party can be cured of its ailment.” The governor said his faction still remains the legitimate faction despite the grandstanding of the national chairman while Umar Kugama remains the legitimate chairman of the party in the state. Nyako said it was due to the degeneration of things in the party that some of the concerned governors started meeting with some powerful stakeholders in the party, which premised their last visit to Abeokuta to meet with former president Olusegun Obasanjo in order to proffer a way forward in the face of the lingering crisis so far bedevilling the party. “You should understand that our visit to former President Olusegun Obasanjo was not in our capacity as PDP members but out of our concern to provide panacea to the ailment currently bedevilling the party. That is why we are making moves to involve elder statesmen in our consultations.” He said the high-level meeting between the four governors who met the former president was fruitful, although he did not disclose the resolution they arrivedat during the closed-door meeting with the former president. He said the governors have also organised to meet with former heads of state in their move to restore sanity to the beleaguered party. The meeting was billed for this Monday, he said, but he could not personally attend the meeting due to the fact the he was expecting Camerounian officials that would arrive in the state in connection with the Lagdo Dam issue. Four governors in closed-door meeting with IBB, Abdulsalami Meanwhile, four PDP governors in the north yesterday entered into about two hours’ closed-door meeting with two former Nigerian leaders, General Ibrahim BadamasiBabangida and General Abdulsalami Abubakar, in Minna. However, governors Rabiu Kwankwanso of Kano, Sule Lamidoof Jigawa, Aliyu Wamako of Sokoto and the host Dr Muazu Babangida Aliyu started meeting with the two leaders from 12:30pmafter IBB and Abdulsalami arrived at the venue of the meeting, Presidential Lodge around 12:25pmin a green colour Mercedes Benz S500 with registration number AE323WSH. LEADERSHIP gathered that the two former leaders decided to meet the governors who had arrived earlier at the Presidential Lodge instead of their residence as was always the case with such politicalmeetings hosted by the duo. LEADERSHIP gathered that the reason for relocating the venue was strategic: to make the governors realize the importance of the issues slated to be discussed at the meeting which was held behind closed doors. It was gathered that the meeting discussed the gradual erosion of fundamental democratic tenets in Nigeria’s polity and the various strategies being adopted to emasculate governors, especially those of the north, ahead of 2015. A source close to the meeting told LEADERSHIP that the governors specifically sought the interventionof IBB and Abdulsalami in advisingPresident Goodluck Jonathan against the happenings in Rivers State and their new political platform aimed at national integration rather than politics of division being adopted at high places. It was gathered that the governors expressed the fear that the presidency may come after all the governors considered their adversaries if they succeeded in getting their way in River State. The source also told LEADERSHIP that the governors notified the former leaders of their intention to launch a political platform within the ruling PDP that would be basedon core democratic values ahead of 2015 in order to produce a Nigerian leader that would integrate the country beyond ethnic and religious line that the present politics in the country is toeing. It was learnt that the two Nigerian leaders promised to reach out to the appropriate authority in making sure that normalcy returned to the system but were non-committal as to whether they would support the new political platform being proposed. Speaking to Journalists after the meeting the host governor, Dr Aliyu, apparently confirming the report of LEADERSHIP on Monday said “this is a platform we could use to actualise the political dreams; now we are consulting with our elders and leaders and let us look at some of the problems and solutions to the problems that some of us perceived we are facing”. Asked whether the happenings in River State was part of the agenda of the meeting, Aliyu stated: “Obviously there is no issue in Nigeria that River crisis would not come up but it is a larger issue than Governors’ Forum we are discussing how to solve”. The next step for the group of five governors, Aliyu stated, is to “continue to consult as a group to see where we are going to next”. According to him, the governors were consulting to make sure that all the stakeholders understand the issues and find a way of carrying the people as they go along. IBB stated that it is commendable that the governors considered them and involved them in finding a solution to the problems of the country, saying that “they are really patriotic and I am very happy I told them so”. IBB stated that the step taken by the governors was the best in the circumstance they found themselves in, adding that “I was very impressed because they see the problems of this country as ourown problems and they have takenthe right steps to make the consultation wide and trying to find solutions to some of the problems”....read more... http://leadership.ng/news/230713/pdp-will-die-soon-governor-nyako |

truefact: actually, i dont understand why the West/North dont want break up when they so much hate the East...it's so absurd...i thought they should rather rejoice on a break up and free themselves from the agressive and progressive East/Biafra.
I think the West/North would be the worst fools on earth if they refused to break up and free themselve from their emeny in this 2nd chance because this is their last opportunity to freedom, period. Yea the major thing keeping us together is fading away. The same America want to make it useless and every region are discovering the resources, so who care, we will call for it not you. Even America know that it is only oil that is keeping nigeria and notting more and if they devalue the oil who need the biafra or south south? |
