Politics / Three Nigerian Men, Two Thais Arrested As Police Bust Transnational Cocaine by abu12: 1:18pm On Nov 29, 2021
Three Nigerian men and two Thais have been arrested in
Bangkok on suspicion of involvement in transnational
cocaine trafficking.

The three Nigerian men were identified as Daniel
Onyekachukwu Ngwu, 40, Alfred Divine Chika, 38, and
Gabriel Obidimma Obiechefu, 37.

The two Thais were 43-year-old woman, Kanyarat Hawakot
and a 25-year-old man, Assadawut Mansom.

CIB commissioner Pol Lt Gen Jirabhop Bhuridej said the
suspects were arrested in a sting operation on Saturday,
November 27.

Police confiscated 413.3 grammes of cocaine worth more
than 1 million baht when they made the arrests on Saturday,
November 28.

The arrests were jointly conducted by the Central
Investigation Bureau (CIB), immigration police, Anti-
Trafficking in Persons Division (ATPD) and soldiers.

Police learned that the three Nigerians had illegally entered
the country and set up their own network in the kingdom.
According to police, they attempted to marry Thai women to
use them as tools for drug trafficking to distribute drugs to
both Thai and foreign customers — mostly celebrities— in
various entertainment venues in Bangkok.

Besides using women for drug trafficking, the group would
also hide drugs in their luggage or even swallow the drugs
to avoid the eye of authorities at the airport.

Pol Lt Gen Jirabhop told the investigation team to lure the
group into the open, which led to the arrests in the Phra
Khanong and Klong Tan areas.

"All confessed they had been doing it for 4-5 years. They
faced a charge of possessing cocaine with intent to
distribute, while the three Nigerians faced an additional
charge of illegal entry.

Police are tracking down their accomplices, Jirabhop
added.

Politics / Alleged N11.8bn Scandal: Ayu Vows To Probe Past PDP Administrations by abu12: 10:00am On Nov 26, 2021
https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/11/alleged-n11-8bn-scandal-ayu-vows-to-probe-past-pdp-administrations/

National chairman-elect of the Peoples
Democratic Party, PDP, Senator Iyorchia Ayu has
pledged the readiness of his administration to
look into the books of the party with a view to
enthroning a culture of accountability and
transparency in the running of party affairs.

Ayu disclosed this in a parley with newsmen at
the party’s secretariat, Abuja on Thursday,
following the end of a two-day retreat organized
for the National Working Committee, NWC,
members-elect.

The former Senate President’s vow came against
the backdrop of a paper presented at the retreat
by Okwesilize Nwodo, former national chairman
of the PDP.

Nwodo in a veiled dig at successive
administrations wondered what happened to the
huge sums of money he handed over to Bello
Haliru-led executive committee.

“I handed over N11 billion in fixed deposit and
N800 million in current account when I left as
national chairman after seven months. I don’t see
what was done with that money.

“Millions were raised to finish our national
headquarters; we don’t seem to have a trace of
where all that money went. Our headquarters is
yet to be completed. Today we don’t even have a
party account. We have to get back to strict
monitoring of our party accounts.

“Our internal audit department needs to be
strengthened and supported by the party
leadership. Very strict sanctions must be imposed
on the mismanagement of party funds.

I suggest that we include inviting the Economic
and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC to probe
erring officers and members and prosecution of
those found culpable. This is the only way to
create a deterrent,” Nwodo stated in his
presentation.

Reacting to the development, Ayu said PDP under
his stewardship will breathe the fresh air of
transparency.

He said: “By the time we come to the office,
accountability will remain our watchword and I
want to assure all of you that we will run the
PDP administration as transparently as possible.
“The outgoing NWC has set up different
committees to look into different areas. We shall
take up all the reports, review them, look at the
facts and then attend to each issue according to
the facts available to us.

“I want to assure you that we shall try to clean
our house no matter who is going to be affected.
We shall try to clean our house following due
process and that due process also includes
exhausting all internal conflict resolving
mechanisms before we bring in any external
intervention when we cannot resolve the issues,”
he added.

That said, Ayu slammed the President
Muhammadu Buhari-led administration over the
planned increase in the price of Premium Motor
Spirit, PMS, saying, “the PDP does not believe in
visiting more hardship on the Nigerian people.
The party has not discussed the issue of an
increase in petroleum prices but our general
position is that the people of Nigeria are already
hard-pressed. There is so much hardship.
“If you are poor, you are not going to benefit
from what is called petroleum subsidy.

“I want to assure Nigerians that when we come
back to power as a party, everything will be done
to make sure that the massive sufferings that
Nigerians are going through come to end because
if you increase the price of petroleum products
today, with the kind of suffering that Nigerians
are going through, it means that there will be
enormous difficulty in transportation.

“Food prices will escalate and they are already
very high out there. You will find that the crime
rate will increase. Every single vice which has
escalated under the All Progressives Congress,
APC will double. So the APC government is trying
to take us into the highest level of suffering and
ultimately, taking Nigerians to a position of non-
existence,” he lamented.

Ayu further promised to explore alternative
sources of funding for the party as well as
organize up periodic retreats for party officials to
keep them abreast of various spheres of party
administration.

Politics / Kogi Govt Gives EFCC 48-hour Ultimatum To Retract Statement, Apologise by abu12: 6:51am On Nov 22, 2021
“Hatchet job conceived by politicians and implemented
by an irresponsible EFCC under the leadership of
Abdulrasheed Bawa “

The Kogi State Government has given a 48-hour ultimatum
to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission
(EFCC) to apologise and retract the statement that it has
returned N19.3 billion bail-out funds allegedly “hidden” by
the state to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) or face
legal action.

The ultimatum to retract came following a statement by
EFCC and posted on its Facebook Account on November
19, 2021.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos on Sunday, the
Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, who gave
the ultimatum, said the fifth columnist and progenitors of
the allegation against the state government were jittery of
Governors Yahaya Bello rising profile ahead of 2023
Presidential election.

He said the whole saga was “a hatchet job conceived by
politicians and implemented by an irresponsible EFCC
under the leadership of Abdulrasheed Bawa” to tarnish the
rising political image of Governor Yahaya Bello, bring him
to disrepute and lower him in the estimation of right-
thinking members of the society by portraying him as a
corrupt governor/person.

“Nigerians know that all banking transactions including
those done online are done based on instructions given by
the customers. We had in the past challenged and we
hereby again challenge the EFCC to produce the account
mandate, account package, and the phone number and
BVN of those who allegedly opened and operated the
‘Kogi State salary bailout fixed deposit account No.
0073572696’ on behalf of the Kogi State government.
“The EFCC should tell Nigerians who was drawing the
interest from the said fixed deposit account and where
same was being paid by the bank.

“Rather than answer the above posed questions truthfully
and faithfully as a responsible organization, the EFCC
descended into the realm of lies, not only to Nigerians but
to the Court. The EFCC lied on oath that the mandate
form which was duly signed and clearly endorsed with our
bailout accounts 1 and 2 shared the same account

mandate with the ‘Kogi State Salary bailout fixed deposit
account No. 0073572696’ even though the document they
attached to their affidavit in support of that deposition in
Court did not support the lie.

“Nigerians would then see that it is the agency set up to
fight corruption that is now engaging in corrupt practices
and tactics, lying on oath and coercing witnesses to
support their lies, and engaging in an unconscionable and
elaborate attempt to misinform Nigerians all in a bid to
satisfy paymasters and political allies and godfathers who
are clearly using the EFCC to fight a political war ahead of
the 2023 general elections.

“I want to assure you that after 48 hours from today, if
they refuse to retract their ill-fated, false, politically
motivated, irresponsible press statement, we will drag
them to court,” the commissioner said.

Fanwo alleged that some of the governors interested in
the 2023 presidential race are using the Economic and
Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to discredit
Governor Yahaya Bello.

“This is the height of irresponsibility by an agency charged
with the responsibility of fighting corruption in our country.
“Certain individuals, especially governors with interest in
2023, have hired some agencies to discredit our governor
before 2023. They attempted to use the NFIU, ICPC, Code
of Conduct. They have finally settled for EFCC, which has
all along acted as hired guns for these individuals to
discredit and vilify Bello.”

Politics / RMAFC Confirms Kogi An Oil Producing State, Gov Bello Thanks President Buhari by abu12: 1:05pm On Sep 08, 2021
Kogi state governor, Yahaya Bello has expressed the state government’s appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari for the recognition of Kogi as one of the oil-producing states in the country by the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).
The governor conveyed his ‘thank you’ message to Mr President while on a visit to the State House, Presidential Villa, Abuja on Tuesday.
Bello who addressed journalists in the State House after a meeting with Mr President said he was in the Villa to thank President Muhammadu Buhari for the recognition of Kogi as an oil-producing state and had a discussion with him on the resuscitation of the Ajaokuta Steel Complex also in Kogi State.
“The aim of my visit to Mr President this afternoon was to thank him for the recognition of Kogi State as one of the oil- producing states in the country. And we also discussed the issue of Ajaokuta Steel Complex which Mr President said all efforts are ongoing to ensure the Steel Complex comes up before the end of his administration.” the governor said.
He said with the recognition of Kogi and Anambra, the age- long oil wells dispute that resulted in unwarranted killings and destruction of property between two communities of Odeke in Ibaji local government area of Kogi and Aguleri in Anambra state has come to an end while commending Mr President for the peaceful resolution of the dispute.
The Ibaji oil crisis had been on for a while and has led to large scale destruction of property with the loss of many lives. The Odeke and Aguleri communities of Kogi and Anambra states laid exclusive claim to the ownership of the oil in the disputed area which has been finally resolved in favour of both states.
By history, the exploration of crude oil in Ibaji Local Government Area which comes under Anambra Basin in geological terms started in 1952 in the villages of Odeke, Echeno, Ihile, Anocha/Uchuchu, Omabo, Ikah, Iregwu and Ujeh all in Ibaji community of the present-day Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi State.“Between 1952 and 1986 three companies namely; Shell BP (now SPDC), ELF (now Total Fina Elf) and AGIP Energy have drilled 25 exploration wells, 2 appraisal wells and 8-core drill wells in the entire Basin out of which majority of the wells fall into Kogi State.
Since the assumption office in 2016, governor Yahaya Bello who always work in silence understudied the disputed area and with deft political approach pursuit the matter which remained unresolved by his predecessors to a logical conclusion.
