There is a high likelihood that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will pick its presidential candidate for the 2023 elections from the northern part of the country as stakeholders are set to zone the chairmanship position of the party to the South. During its 92nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting at the weekend, the party had announced that it will arrive at a zoning formula for the National Working Committee (NWC) at a meeting billed for September 9. This comes as the struggle for political power among the political gladiators hots up ahead of the party’s national convention slated for October 30 and 31. The process for the election of new NWC members continues despite the raging crisis in the party which has sparked several litigations and court injunctions. The embattled National Chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus, who was elected in December 2017 for an initial period of four years, but recently suspended by a court, has insisted that his tenure will elapse in December 2021. But top party officials told Daily Trust that the October 31 elective convention date is sacrosanct and would throw up a new crop of NWC. It is also expected to ratify the zoning of 2023 political offices. Though Nigerians have mixed views about zoning of key political positions, the arrangement is, however, entrenched by the PDP, to allow for all parts of the country to taste key offices. A founding member of the PDP, former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido had, in a recent interview with Daily Trust explained that zoning arrangement was conceived to heal past wounds and assure all parts of the country, advising that the mood should be reviewed in deciding whether to maintain or jettison the zoning arrangement. Already some bigwigs in the party have commenced scheming in their bid to influence the emergence of their preferred persons as new leaders of the party. The Northern Youth Leaders Forum (NYLF), an umbrella of 42 Arewa groups, has called on former President Olusegun Obasanjo to urgently summon a meeting of those it called “Nigeria’s Fathers” with a view to intervening in the country’s woes and proffering solutions. The group specifically called on Obasanjo to wade into the crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), declaring the party remains the hope of Nigerians. It described Obasanjo as an ‘advanced citizen who believes in the corporate existence of Nigeria.’ The National Chairman of NYLF, Elliot Afiyo, made the call while addressing newsmen in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Saturday, shortly after his meeting with Obasanjo. Afiyo, who mentioned other “Nigeria’s Fathers” to include former Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida (retd), General Theophilus Danjuma (retd), General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd) and Ernest Shonekan, listed banditry, kidnapping, corruption, poor economy, agitation for secession as part of the challenges the country faces. He said that it is high time these ‘patriotic Nigerians’ met and proffered solutions to the challenges before they consume the nation. He disclosed that the NYLF was part of the groups that supported President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 but expressed concerns that he (Buhari) has failed to meet the expectations of Nigerians. He accused the APC of a lack of political will to solve the myriads of challenges confronting the country. ‘We were part of the groups that brought Buhari in 2015, we thought the Buhari that we knew would change things, but we realised that we have made mistake and we have to correct it. That is why I came personally to see Baba and we have discussed, he has to also be involved. He said the current crisis in the PDP is a result of power-play between some governors because of their presidential ambition in 2023, urging former Obasanjo to call on the Bauchi State Governor, Bala Muhammed, to prevail on the governors. He noted that the courage, competence and experience of Governor Muhammed can calm the storm within the PDP. Speaking on the agitation for power shift ahead of 2023, Afiyo said the next president could come from any part of the country, provided such a candidate has the competence and capacity to address Nigeria’s challenges. ‘As it is now, we are not concerned about power shift or power rotation, we are looking for somebody that can solve our problems. I want to beg Nigerians, the president can come from anywhere, the person that we are convinced that will solve our problems is who we need now,’ he submitted.
