If my memory serve me well, the Structural engineer holding the seminar said that Igboland actually have no business with asphalt, except as a top for a very thick solid slab else it will be like sticking glue to wet substance.

And also he said that the life span of the two places concrete ahead plus concrete requires less maintenance.

Asphalt will require more maintenance every 3 or something years and will last for less than 20 years (average of 10-20 years depending on the maintenance), that is if the maintenance is followed religiously (something I think we cant boast of in Africa) but Concrete requires less maintenance (maybe whenever) and occasionally topping but will last up to 50 years

So you see, no matter how much many will try to soil Umahi name or his peculiar achievement in that concrete road, one thing is certain, in the next 20 years Ebonyi will be one of the few or only Igbo state to boast of working road because at that time, all our asphalt has wearied out and politicians will start using it for campaign.

RCC used concrete as a sub base on the roads that Ngige built and the road they are constructing from Umunya. Same with the company that reconstructed old Enugu road.

But the reason many street roads collapse is poor drainage and poor soil stabilisation. The local contractors compact the soil and overlay it with asphalt. Water does not run off completely but sometimes collects. Eventually during the rainy season when the water level rises and then falls during the dry season the soil underneath changes shape and cracks appear and then pot holes.

There are also places where the soil has high clay content such as the oji axis and amansea. Clay soil retains water and has poor load bearing capacity. To construct roads in such places requires doing what RCC did at Ore which is excavate the clay and replace it with a stronger sub grade.

Soludo govt should do a state wide soil mapping if it has not been done. This will help determine what materials to use to construct roads, drainage system and erosion mitigation. They should also reform the Ministry of Works, partner with external donors, bring in experts, staff it with qualified engineers to construct local roads and drainage systems according to proper engineering specifications.

In terms of drainage, they should replace gutters with underground hdpe drainage pipes. Install water, sewage and cable pipes alongside them. Let it be a 30 year project building out a proper city wide integrated underground drainage, water and sewage system for Awka, Nnewi and Onitsha.

I congratulate the state government in completing the airport. It will make travel to the state easier.

For the incoming governor they should endeavour to take the state to the next level by modernising and expanding the rest of the transport infrastructure. Anambra needs lots more wider roads, it needs modern organised public transport in cities not keke or shuttle, it needs proper bus stations not dirt motor parks. It needs to redesign markets to fit within growing cities without creating problems of filth, congestion and crime.

The airport is ok but like many of Obianos projects compromised by mediocre planning and design. The airport has a limited departure hall for 2 flights at a time and thats why you have 2 check in counters, 2 avio bridges and 2 baggage carousels. So unless the 6 airlines Obiano announced arrive and depart at different times it will replicate the chaos at Enugu domestic airport where 4 airline counters cram into a space meant for 2.

Whoever designed the Umueri airport designed it for roughly 4-8 flights per day. Which is OK for visitors to the state because it means 1,600 passengers per day or around 500,000 a year.

The Campaign for Democracy (CD) in Anambra State has raised the alarm over what it called the preponderance of touts in the State.

Chairman of the group in the State, Comrade Ekene Nnamdi, told newsmen in Fegge, Onitsha South Local Government Area, that security had collapsed in the State especially in Onitsha the commercial city of the State and its environs, like Nkpor and Obosi who he said were paying for the consequences.

He further alleged that traders from outside the State had been robbed, extorted, humiliated and wounded by different tout groups “more dangerous than armed robbers killing security men and snatching their guns.”
The group also alleged that most of the touts operating in Onitsha and its environs, particularly from Upper Iweka to Owerri Road, where Naval Ratings, were attacked, killed and their guns snatched, and to Electrical Market Obosi, might even be informants to the daredevil criminals attacking security men.

“We also plead with the new Commissioner of Police, Anambra State, to write his name in gold by flushing out the criminal elements along Owerri Road to electrical market, Obosi, Upper Iweka to Niger Bridge Head, Atani Road, Bida Road, Modebe Avenue, Nkpor and some parts of Obosi, particularly, the entry points of Obosi from Nkpor.

“Security has gone to it’s worst level in the history of Anambra State, and I want to ask the question, where is our Governor? Let me repeat my self, where is our Governor? Why I ask this question is based on what is happening in our dear State security-wise.

“Touts have taken over Anambra State and our Governor being the Chief Security Officer of the State must take responsibility, and I want to ask Anambrarians again, where is our Governor. Is Anambra State still the “Light of the Nation”?

“It seems Anambra Stare is now in a reverse gear, darkness has taken over in the State, Anambra State is the only State in the whole Federation where touts are using marker ball pen as receipt to collect money from motorists and tricyclists. Go to Upper Iweka and Owerri Road you will see for yourself what I’m talking about.

“Go to Bida Road, you will see them, go to Modebe Avenue, go to Nkpor you will see them with their marker ball pen as receipt. They mark on your tricycle and collect money from the driver. Apart from that, at Nkpor now if you drop any bag on the ground, you must pay for it before you leave the spot no matter how small the bag will be.

“Check the two places where Naval Ratings were attacked in Anambra State, Owerri road and Awkuzu junction, you will see that they are the hubs of touting in the State. Everybody knows the level and caliber of touting on Owerri Road and Awkuzu junction. They are the most dangerous places one can be in Anambra State.

“If you carry any small bag in a tricycle, you must pay for it and it is by force. If you dare challenge them, they will beat you black and blue and nobody challenges them, whether Police or Army. Why will such people not turn to armed robbers or be informants to armed robbers. They are the people aiding violent criminals and criminality in the State.

“Anambra Stare is in danger, touts have taken over everywhere and they have formed a defacto government in the State. They listen to nobody, they respect nobody, they do what they like without challenge from anybody or security agents, we are no longer safe.
“If you go to Owerri Road now you will see touts with sticks forcing tricyclists to give them money, it is no more road blocks by the security agencies, the road blocks are now mounted by touts with sticks and other dangerous weapons in every corner of Onitsha and its environs.

“We think it is time for Anambra State government to flush out all the criminals hiding under the name of touts and revenue collectors, robbing and beating people in the State. They are not above the government, unless the government is telling us otherwise, ” he concluded.

The federal and Anambra State Governments have concluded plans to embark on palliative work on the failed portion of the Onitsha -Owerri express road.

The Federal Comptroller of Works , Anambra State, Ashanni Adeyemi made this known during a joint inspection of the area by zonal director of Works , Owerri, federal Comptroller of Works Anambra state, Anambra State Commissioner of Works, Anambra state Sector Commander Federal Road Safety Commission , the Police and other sister agencies.

Speaking to the ABS shortly after inspection of the area, the Comptroller of Works, Mr Adeyemi said the federal government has deployed the services of Julius Berger construction company to put the road back to use.

Mr Adeyemi added that they will fix the road within three days saying that the unfortunate incident was as a result of blockage of natural flood channel with buildings and blocked drainage in the area which led to washing off of the earth underneath.

The Anambra State Commissioner for Works Engineer Marcel Ifejiofor while describing the incident as very unfortunate, regretted the hardship the situation has caused Ndi Anambra and other residents and appreciated the federal and Anambra state governments for responding promptly as the situation demanded.

Engineer Ifejiofor cautioned those who are in the habit of dumping debris inside the drainages to desist forthwith since its repercussions are devastating, even as he pleaded with them to exercise patience as the work will be completed within a short period of time.

The Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, Anambra State, Mr Ade Irelewuyi noted that they are on top of the situation diverting and controlling traffic along the road to avoid casualty, assuring that they will work in synergy with both federal and state governments until the work is completed.

The whole point of an ICC is CAPACITY and FUNCTIONALITY not having lifter or cable step. But yes Obiano and friends made building an ICC look like rocket science while Ebonyi finished their own long time ago.

As for Onitsha Mall it was funded by African Capital Alliance. Anambra State Government contributed the land in exchange for 25% equity. ACA made a huge mistake in the architectural design. The Mall was built for 2 anchor tenants with 2 main entrances and space for restaurants in the middle. But they only got 1 anchor tenant and then converted the space for 1 to a food court and then forced people to enter from the far side to access the
rest of the mall.

Blame ACA not ANSG for their silly design.

My friend go and sit down. Who born you? As children we used to fetch water from that very place which was perennially flooded not up to 30 years ago. Its johnny just come like you in Government House that think you know Awka and keep showcasing your stupidity.

It was Obi that built a very deep gutter and under-ground channel to funnel rain water away to Iyiagu in order to build the stadium. Still during the core rainy season just sink a shovel into the ground and you will hit water.

As for them being fast, American secondary schools build projects far more sophisticated than this in 1 year. The Police built all the infrastructure for police games at Ekwueme square in less than a month. Sports Complex is about DESIGN and MAINTENANCE not just building. They have to build other facilities to make it BUSY and not just a football field. I see a running track which is good but lots of things remain:

- Mini Football Training Pitch (1 for training, pick-up games)
- Tennis Courts (at least 2 to start)
- Volleyball Sand pit (at least 1)
- Basketball Courts (at least 2 to start)
- Swimming Pool (at least 1 to start)
- Male and Female Toilets and Changing Rooms (at least 10 toilets and 5 showers and locker room)
- Mini-Park with trees, walking path and bench (area for people to sit, relax)
- Parking Lot (enough space for 100 cars).

Obiano knows what a first class Sports Complex looks like. He lives in Houston for Gods sake!

That is 1. Number 2 is that of all the sites in Awka, they chose a SWAMP far from the main city. Had they conducted proper Project FEASIBILITY survey the company would have chosen one of those empty lands near Ekwueme Square. They are CENTRAL, ACCESSIBLE and do not need expensive DRAINAGE.

What is done is done and I hope you learn from this that your hero wasted 3 years with another of his sub-standard contractors instead of doing the right thing and getting experts from the start.
