Career / Re: Did I Make A Mistake Studying Law? by adadadon(m): 9:40pm On Aug 18, 2015
Hidentity:
My friend,

Ordinarily, I don't enjoy making comments on issues like this, but I was touched by some of your lines. First, I must admit that the situation of things is not fair enough. But there are a couple of questions that I have come to figure out from your complaint and I think that answering them will help:

1: Why did you study law? What was the driving force? The motivation?

2: Outside law, what other things can you do?

3: What is your professional plan like?

4: Who are the calibres of people you move with?

5: What is your attitude like? Like your personality and what people can say about you if they are asked in a sentence.

6: What do you do with everyday that comes by?

My dear, I am a lawyer- less than a year at the Bar and currently serving too. Here is my point, I was as worried as you are a couple of months back- though not for the same reasons. Mine was the fear of underachievement. However, after my call, I applied for job in a few firms and I was lucky to get like 4 of 6. Now look at this scenario, I got one for a pay of close to #100,000 and one below #50,000 in different firms. What did I do?

I went back to my strategy and professional chart table. What did I want? I am passionate about advocacy and I know that given the avenue to showcase that in a certain number of years, I'll be somewhere, but then the firm that would pay me higher won't afford me that chance. Why? I am a young counsel and they have no time for test running, so I'll be carrying files about behind senior colleagues and earning money. No, I won't be driven by cash, money can't buy my dream. At the other firm, tasks abound for me, but the pay isn't much. Yes, I'll go for that- I'll be directly involved in the practice of law, judges will note my ability, clients would and I'll grow along the line.

I went for the lesser pay, luckily the firm was owned by a special adviser to the Governor of a state. Very brilliant colleagues to compete with, but guess what? I write, they don't. Yet, we are all deft at the knowledge of law and advocacy for our ages. My boss discovered that, I became a sort of pal. Anytime she is going for a meeting, I'd be invited and right there she would introduce me as 'a colleague'. This woman is over 15 years at the Bar and yes, one of the most influential female lawyers in the state. In addition to law practice, I was writing speeches for her, doing researches and all. But I had an ace up my sleeve the day I got called to Bar- I won't serve for more than a year with any firm and I'll always leave when the ovation is the loudest. In 6 months, I indicated interest in resigning and whao, I got an incredible remark, words and all. Till now she still calls me for some tasks and I am certain the doors of the firm are open for me anytime.

She had refused to employ another lawyer to fill my vacant seat for over a month. She then invited me for a conference, but my schedule in my new job didn't allow it. I recommended a friend and verbatim, this was her reply via text: I don't know if he has your skill and versatility. I am looking for specific qualities. My friend, does that look like she wanted just a lawyer? NO! What other things do you do?

Now, I serve at the legal department of INEC. I must admit that as per pay, I'm not getting what I want but I'm convinced I'm walking the right path. Just today, while in Court, my boss was to object to something on a point of law and I whispered something to him to add. Dear, after all his submission, the sentence I whispered to him was what the Court kept repeating while during recess, some people came to him to write down that exact line. I don't know if you are getting my point.

About the people you move with, i used to write for the love of it- poetry, opinion piece, legal articles etc. People read and comment. A friend had told me one day 'since writing for you is like breathing for a healthy man, convert that.' That night, I wrote to all media outfits using my articles to stop if they can't pay me. I didn't get reply from some, some replied. Dear, for every article I write today, while some comment to commend me and some idle thinkers insult me, I can boast that thousands are entering my bank account. Recently, i was sent a screenshot of a book selling on Amazon, dear I was one of the 11 African writers that contributed in the anthology. It is the first of its edition. I was not even contacted by the publisher but i was acknowledged. Wanted to sue them, but I thought 'they are selling me.' Was I taught that in the University or the law school? Friend, I can go on and on. As a corp member, I have gotten invitation for interviews in not less than 6 firms and organisations but I couldn't go due to my schedule. Recently, one Human Rights organisation contacted me to negotiate on the pay for a job. I was also recently part of a team that met Mr. Dele Odule for a proposal on a certain task. Mr. Dele Odule had asked after my presentation: you studied in the UK? I said No. He was dazed. You know why, i have discovered my strength and I am leveraging on it to achieve my goals. You can do the same.

I was graduated by a Federal University, I wasn't from a rich background and I have never been given any letter to deliver somewhere for job, but I am doing well for my age and ability. I used to negotiate with my weakness in mind- I just need a few thousands, I am not a senator's son etc. It has changed- I negotiate with my strength and the status of the other party.

About what people know about you, everyday, I get tons of works to edit for people- speeches, addresses, articles, research works and coaching on public speaking. It is so tasking. In fact, on a lighter note, there is this crazy dude that can't send a common text to his girlfriend without my input. Sounds petty? I hope you understand. I have to combine official works with some of it. Yet, I don't appear like I'm laboured- I have successfully merged passion and talent with dreams.Guess what? I never start at all. I'm still WARMING UP.

I am not where I intend to reach, but I can boast that I am not where I was some months back. The only person on your way is the one in the mirror- YOU. Not those law firms, the low pays or anybody.

Be good.

@MrKing3, I am typing with a phone. The most important thing is that I have passed my message. You seem to be angry with the way I shred your baseless argument into pieces. Next time if you want to ague about HND and BSC dichotomy , pls look for dull HND holders to argue with not me. I am too sophisticsted for you. For your information, BSC holders in my office see me like an expatriate. I teach them theory and practical. They cant use autocad to design , they cant interprete drawings , they cant implement projects without me. I am like a demi god to them. The problem I have with them is that they are more of liability to me. They cant work on their own without my supervision and correction. How long will I breast feed those BSC holders? I will soon write a memo to the Governor of my state to send them to technical school for vocational training because they are totally useless in the engineering profession.

The GEJ issue was simple, the entire SW felt neglected by his government,as there was no visible development here by him, then the unchecked issues of corruption and his seeming indifference to it.

I HAVE no issue with Senator Rabiu Kwakwanso keeping his Almajiris so he could mobilise millions of herded voters at will, all I insist is that he should not run education from Abuja and churn out policies that would almajarise my own toddlers.

Hillary, do you still remember our 1986 protest on the ABU crisis over the extra-judicial murder of Farida Mustapha and others? We emptied out of our campus and hit the streets of Ife in anger against the state that gave the guns to to the police who killed our schoolmates.

We surmised that such a criminal state had no moral authority to accuse people of crimes and lock them away. Thus, we went to the prison in the heart of Oduduwa city and amnestied the inmates. We were sent home for about five months.

When we returned to school,Yinka Tella wrote a poem titled “Zamaru:The Aftermath” which was published by “Democrat”, the campus journal I edited at the time. About 30 years after, I still remember his last lines:

“If by the year 2000, the unmarried maidens of Zamaru

resolve to remain in purdah,

Despite Farida Mustapha, who cares?

Certainly not Ife!”

Tella was seeing far into the future and projected correctly that it would be futile seeking to unify civilisations. It is the template for a salad bowl country where all ingredients retain their identities and yet still collectively add up to one final product.

Living in illusion

For decades, we have lived the illusion of a nation-state buoyed by the oil doom which we nicknamed “boom”. We deluded ourselves that nationhood was settled with all the “no go areas” defined in our conversations . Yet, it is eternal truism that nothing is settled in the life of any country as it is a daily dialogue.

The rentier economy and its corruption bred an irresponsible elite that assumed that everyday was celebration as conspicuous consumption became a way of life. They never bothered to internalise the law of motion that whatever goes up must come down.

By the way, Isaac Newton who taught the world that diid not find much use for it in his personal life and he wept for it. Newton got his fingers burnt with the South Sea Company, which was established in the early 18th Century and granted a monopoly on trade in the South Seas in exchange for assuming England’s war debt.

Investors warmed to the appeal of this monopoly and the company’s shares began their rise. Britain’s most celebrated scientist was not immune to the monetary charms of the South Sea Company, and in early 1720 he profited handsomely from his stake. Having cashed in his chips, he then watched with some perturbation as stock in the company continued to rise.

In the words of Lord Overstone, no warning on earth can save people determined to grow suddenly rich. Newton went on to repurchase a good deal more South Sea Company shares at more than three times the price of his original stake, and then proceeded to lose £20,000 (which, in 1720, amounted to almost all his life savings).

His song after the crash was “I can calculate the movement of stars, but not the madness of men.”

It was that incalculable “madness of men” that made no one to listen when We warned a year ago that our “sharing” prosperity would end in calamity if the price of oil suddenly crash. The statement as captured by Vanguard of 9th, July 2014 is worth recalling:

“If price of oil crashes today, govs flying jets will look for okada to ride – Delegate”
By Henry Umoru

ABUJA- A delegate representing the South West Geo- Political Zone of the country, Yinka Odunmakin told other delegates yesterday that if the price of oil crashes today, governors who he alleged to be going round the world with private jets, will look for motorcycles, known as Okada to ride.

Contributing to debate on report of the devolution of power Committee yesterday, Odumakin also said that if no oil, only Lagos state out of the 36 states of the country would be able to use its Internally Generated Revenue, IGR to pay workers’ salaries.

He said, “The recommendations of the Devolution Committee to use 4.5 % of our annual budget to develop other mineral resources outside oil is the most apt thing to do now to get out of the sharing culture that is holding Nigeria down. We are engaged in one of Ghandi’s identified 7 Social Deadly Sins-Wealth Without Work.If oil prices should crash today, all our states would collapse and the governors flying jets all over the place will look for okada to ride.

“The grim reality below shows that we must embrace wealth flowing from work by going under the soil in our various states to diversify the economy.”

Grim IGR reality

On IGR and States’ wages, the delegate said, “Only one of the 36 states can afford to pay workers’ salaries with internally generated revenues,

The remaining 35 states generate only a fraction of funds they require to settle their wage bills annually. This means that without federal funds, these states cannot even afford salaries payment, not to talk of executing any projects

“Information on states’ wage bills comparisons with data on their internally generated revenues (IGR), published by the National Bureau of Statistics. The result showed that only Lagos State can pay salaries of its workers by solely relying on revenues generated internally.

“None of the 19 Northern states has this much financial muscle. They all depend on federally-allocated subventions, mainly made up of funds generated from sales of crude oil that is extracted down south.

“Other components of the federal allocation, shared between the three tiers of government on monthly basis, include taxes collected by the Nigerian Customs Service and the Federal Inland Revenue Service.

“Lagos generated N219 billion in 2012, three times its annual wage bill of N76.5 billion. States that generated more than N10 billion in 2012 are Kano, Kaduna, Oyo, Ondo, Ogun, Enugu, Edo, Delta, Cross River and Akwa Ibom.

Among states with fairly strong revenue bases are Rivers, which generates the second highest IGR of N66.2 billion in 2012, but has an annual wages bill of N96 billion.

“Edo made N18.9 billion revenue but is weighed down by a salaries bill of N28 billion yearly, while Cross River generated N12.7 billion though it pays N22 billion wages annually.

Even though Kano has the highest IGR in the North, the N24 billion it generated in 2012 is not enough to pay salaries of its workers, which is N36 billion yearly. Kaduna, the second internal revenue earner in the North, garnered N11.5 billion but which is less than half its N27.4 billion annual wage bill.

“The situation with the remaining states is worse, as their annual wage bills are several times larger than their internally generated revenues.

For instance, Zamfara’s internally generated revenue is N2.5 billion in 2012, while its annual wage bill is N13.2 billion; Yobe generated N1.7 billion, and has a yearly salaries bill of N18 billion; while Adamawa’s N23 billion wage bill is five times higher than its IGR of N4.6 billion.

Even oil-rich Bayelsa State generated only N3 billion in 2011, but pays N48 billion in salaries yearly.

“Nasarawa made N4.1 billion in 2012 but spends N24 billion yearly in salaries; Sokoto generated N3.8 billion in 2010 and spends N16.8 billion on annual wages; and Kogi got N3.1 billion in 2012 but it is workforce soaks up N44 billion yearly.

“Kwara (salaries, N11 billion; revenue, N7.2 billion), Benue (revenue, N8.4 billion; salaries, N34.8 billion), Katsina (salaries, N14.4 billion; revenue, N5 billion), Bauchi (salaries, 26 billion; revenue, N4.1 billion), Ondo (revenue, N10.1 billion; salaries, N48 billion), Plateau (revenue, N7 billion; salaries, N20.7 billion), Kebbi (revenue, N5.4 billion; salaries N12 billion), Niger (revenue, N3.7 billion; salaries N31.2 billion), and Gombe (salaries, N14.4; revenue, N3.7 billion).

“Others are Abia (salaries, N30 billion; revenue, N3 billion), Akwa Ibom (salaries, N33.2 billion; revenue, N13.5 billion), Anambra (revenue, N6.1 billion; salaries, N16.3 billion), Borno (salaries, N20.7 billion; revenue, N2.4 billion), Delta (revenue, N45.5 billion; salaries, N85.2 billion) and Ebonyi (salaries, N16.8 billion; revenue, N14 billion).

“There are also Ekiti (salaries N24 billion, revenue N3.8 billion), Imo (revenue N6.8 billion, salaries N22.8 billion), Jigawa (salaries N33.5 billion, revenues N1.4 billion), Osun (salaries N22.8 billion, revenue N5 billion), Oyo (salaries N49 billion, revenue N14 billion), Taraba (revenue N3.4 billion, salaries N21.6 billion).”

Reason for solo ‘waka’

The figures above clearly show why any group that holds the lever of power and does not have broadness of mind would do solo “Waka” to the consternation of others. There is very little we are making from oil . Even if prudently managed, there still can’t be national prosperity.

Nigeria’s budget for 2015 is about $17b just about a little over one third of the $45b Walt Disney Company revenue in 2014. it is a recipe for poverty. A recent report by Vanguard shows that we are losing $208b annually in untapped resources because we have a constitution that says all mines belong to the Federal Government while the states that should tap them and create wealth are going to Abuja looking for “bail outs” are under their feet. That is going to Sokoto in search of what is tucked in your pocket!

It is being drummed into our ears that corruption is our greatest affliction and that it would kill us if we failed to kill it. That is half of the truth. Corruption itself is just a symptom of our worst disease: constitution. If Nigeria “dies” anytime the cause of its death would be printed boldly on its death certificate as the 1999 constitution.

Just one example in closing. It was profitable for a manager with NITEL to live on corruption when that body was the sole telephone provider with 400,000 lines to 100 million people. He would make a fortune taking bribes from many people running after his few lines. If that manager were to be with one of the many GSM operators of today, he would wallow in penury if all he knows is shaking down those want lines as operators now beg people to take their lines.

What we have done in telecoms that we are able to communicate even with the demise of NITEL,we must do with our polity by reconstituting so we can create many corridors of prosperity with every federating unit pursuing their happiness according to their civilisation so we can all “Waka come”

The existing paradigm can only be productive of marginalisation, exclusion and bickering because of limited opportunities which fuels nepotism and clannish inclinations.

Hillary, your friend Jebb Bush is throwing his hat in the ring as the third Bush to seek the presidency of America in our adult life and you won’t hear “Na only Bush Family Waka Come?”Why?…May be I should let you chime in.

First and Foremost i want to categorically say LINDA IkEJI WAS ABSOLUTELY WRONG FOR MAKING THIS CHARGES OF MAKEUP ARTIST AN ISSUE

To every single person that condemned the charges i want to believe they are either still kids or it is poverty mentality.

Everyone no matter what industry they belong have whatever right they deem fit to place any charges on their goods and services. Afterall no one has the right to complain how much linda and seun charges for you to place advert on their blog and forum respectively. You can either patronize them or go scout for a less to nothing provider.

I know of top male fashion designers in Lagos who charge N150,000 for a pair of native attire and thier outlet is a sort of "mecca" and customers troop in and out every single day.

There's a lounge on the Island where a plate of rice and chicken cost N6,500 while a bottle of water is N800 and yet you have to book ahead to enable you get a seat reserved because of the amount of customers that come in (That was where i first met and chatted with a former head of state of Nigeria).

There are people who will never buy a wrist watch less than $8,000. on and on the list goes.

Afterall the "A list entertainers" charge between N1.5million and N3million for less than 30mins performances so what are we freaking about common N200,000 a makeup artiste is charging.

In my humble opinion, i think Linda Ikeji had a personal grudge with the "beauty cook" makeup artise and only want to mock her, but unfortunately she has succeeded in helping her promote her business.

Dongara insist that the principal offices in the HOR must come from the NC and SE

While Gbajagiamila aka Tinubu wants SW and NE

Now has Tinubu not finished the West ?

Of course Dongara will have his way and with that mumu aka commissioner Osinbajo is not our position because he is a waste man

Smh for APC

Meanwhile all our governors are owing us salaries apart from Lagos who is in 1 trillion hairs debts

I just dislike the way some so called yorubas follow Tinubu

I pray we come out of this and let the jabanians suffer alone.

Thought you are Awol

How would a government sign contract with illegal people?

Is it an ethical hacking company?

They should all be investigated and if found wanting, prosecuted

And what type of news is this?

Beer parlour journalism!!!

grin you asked which law backs ECA?...and I replied you that it is subject to no law hence the action of Jonathan/NOI didn't contravene any law whatsoever... so why the fuss bro?...
the legal authority backing the ECA is not the issue because their is none
thats just RED herring
Webmasters / Re: When VBHostNET.com Lose Your Reseller Accounts And Say - "We Have No Backup" by adadadon(m): 3:10pm On Jul 09, 2015
egift:
It has become very sad and painful, experiencing the gross disappointment of VBHostNET.com

1. To keep the long story short, 2yrs and 2months ago I migrated all my clients websites to http://www.vbhostnet.com - the idea was to have all my clients sites in a place, so I can manage them better. Little did I know that their so called "best reseller web hosting in Nigeria" was just another deception.

2. Just 6 days ago, all the cpanel accounts and the reseller account itself was deleted and the WHM recreated. All that is there now is a blank space. After many attempts to reach them, when they responded, they are telling that they did not even have a single backup for even a single cpanel account from dozens of accounts on that Reseller Account.

3. The vbhostnet.com guys will not pick my calls, respond to text. Or may take more than two days to respond to simple issues on Support Ticket.

4. When you go to their site, you will see "Unlimited" this and that, but when ever I pay for ads to drive a handful of traffic to my site, they will suspend the site and tell me that the little traffic have exceeded the limit. (Yet am on their Maximum Reseller Plan).

It has been a very bitter and sad experience with vbhostnet.com - Years of labour flushed down the drain. Am left with disappointed clients and over 25 websites to redesign.

They have even refused to refund the fee I paid last month.

Please guy, will any legal action be fruitful against a Hosting Company? What options do I have?
the same way a hosting company i used just went down, try Qservers or smartweb used em for 4 years now
You can sue them, putting the risk on you is not enough to waive them of all responsibility to you.
1 They carelessly failed to notify you adequately of the impending doom
2 Refund of services not provided
3 Their activities are tantamount to advanced fee fraud
Lesson be wary when choosing a Nigerian company.... but for a hosting company to put such an inexcusable disclaimer shows they are not ready to do business

FG is sole signatory to ECA account...

From where do you expect subsidy money to come from because it is a national project...

[s]And I don't know how many times this would he said here...for it to enter your head...ECA is not subject to any law whatsoever...
[/s]
Are you dumb that's what i said
Politics / Re: Jonathan, NOI, Governors And The Excess Crude Account Events by adadadon(m): 1:13pm On Jul 09, 2015
Whynotthetruth:

1)FAAC isn't authorized by any law to grant approvals here...

2)ECA isn't recognized by the constitution... hence FG is the sole signatory to it...

3)Yes...it is susceptible to abuse...but unless proved we should avoid blackmail... so far the contentious $2b was used for subsidy payment which is lawful and of national importance...

4)FAAC was set up for federation account not ECA which is NOT known to constitution...SWF & ECA are noble projects for our future and sustainability but constitutionally illegal...

cc barcanista
FG is not the sole proprietor Mogidi actually alluded to it when he brought out the screenshot of the monies being shared from the ECA

Fuel subsidy payment from the ECA backed by which law?
