femu: This is not a technical article, am not an animal scientist nor vet doc so its just my rant based on personal experience. Also its not based on the typical rubbish dump pigs you’re probably used to, its based on Pigs kept in concrete pens for commercial purposes.

Investing in piggery is a good and stress-free business as female Pigs conceive twice in a year and can produce as much as 12piglets each time.

A piglet is sold between 3000-3500 Naira, while mature Pigs are sold based on their live weight(kg) multiplied by the going rate per kilo. Currently this is 230 Naira per kilo. Within a year you can have your pig weigh as much as 100kg if you feed it well.

Advantages over Fishery and Poultry.

Lower mortality rate- Pigs are not as fragile, they can still cope with some delays in feeding and water.
Cheaper cost of feeding- Pigs can be fed with a wide variety of products, like humans they are omnivores. Pig feed also costs lesser per kilo compared to Chicken and Fish feed.
Security- because most people have prejudiced opinions towards pigs they don’t even come close to them, hence the thought of theft doesn’t cross their mind. Some see pigs as a taboo.
Also pigs are highly uncooperative animals to handle, they don’t necessarily move in herds .
Diseases- pigs are less susceptible to diseases unlike poultry. Pigs don’t require any special vaccines. All they need is occasional vitamin supplement, de-worming and anti-bacterial treatments.
Easy on the pocket- if you’re very resourceful you can feed a pig with 50 Naira a day by collecting roughages(cassava peels, corn chaff)  in your neighbourhood. U can't dare that with layers or fishes. Also you can easily source brewery waste and palm kernel cake cake for them
More Profitable- In piggery, when selling a kilogram  is a kilogram whether the animal is Big or Small;whereas in fishery the fishes are sold at different weights per kilogram.
Facility conversion Incase you get tired of farming you can easily convert the pens to offices or accommodation. The designs are relevant. i doubt you can easily achieve that in poultry and fishery

1. Recall that Chief M.K.O Abiola was arrested alongside with the likes of Alh. Folawiyo and others by Gen. Tunde Idiagbon regime for several shaddy deals, price inflation of the products he imported and other anti-masses offences. I could recall that Chief Abiola was importing rice and was selling at a very high cost. Then, soldiers will break warehouse and sell at a particular rate which was cheaper than what we had in the market.

2. Several Coup was sponsored by this same Chief M.K.O Abiola including the toppling of Gen. Buhari / Gen. Tunde Idiagbon's regime which could have been the best military government in Nigeria that could have wiped away the seed of corruption that the likes of Chief M.K.O was sowing at that time. Was that for the sake of the masses?

Acting Inspector-General of Police (IG), Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar, said Monday in Ikeja, Lagos State, that the least paid police officer (constable) would go home with a monthly salary of N50,000, if his proposal to the Presidency scales through.

This will mark a sharp increase, as a constable is currently paid N28,000 a month.

He made the disclosure at the Police Command Headquarters while addressing the personnel as part of his visit to the state.

He said: “We are looking into the welfare of our officers and we have made a proposal to the Presidency for the basic salary of constables to be a minimum of N50, 000.”
His declaration sent the policemen at the briefing ground into a boisterous celebration.

Abubakar said he took the decision to seek improvement in the welfare of the personnel to boost their morale.

Soon after pledging to upgrade the welfare of his officers, Abubakar sounded a note of warning to errant officers.
He said any policeman found wanting of the laid down rules would not be spared.

He also said 50,000 officers of the Force were being trained in intelligence and crime investigation to check the insecurity in the country.

According to him, 16,000 of the 50,000 would get intelligence-based police training, while another 10,000 would go for detective course training.

Abubakar disclosed this when he led top police officers on a courtesy visit to Governor Babatunde Fashola in continuation of his familiarisation tour of police commands in the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that Abubakar had earlier addressed officers and men of the command, stakeholders and traditional rulers.

He said the security situation in the country called for more proactive measures if the nation must win the war against violence.

The police boss pledged that he would restore the lost glory of the police, but noted that this might not be possible without the support of the officers and the public.

“We want to build a people-friendly police, which every Nigerian would be proud to be associated with; a force people would be willing to assist by offering information, and they will see the result immediately,” he said.

Abubakar added: “At this point in time, any officer that is not willing to embrace the change will fall by the way side.”
He commended the Lagos State Government for supporting the force, stressing that if other states in Nigeria emulated the state, the crime situation would be drastically reduced.

The IG said that about 300 patrol vehicles would be deployed in the nation’s high ways to replace the dismantled road blocks.

“The vehicles will replace the recently dismantled road blocks and help to boost the effective patrolling of our highways,” he said.

Abubakar said unfortunately, road blocks were being used for purposes different from their original intention.

He said the road blocks, as used in the country, had been turned into an aberration which affected effective policing.
He further said the road blocks were being used to extort money from motorists over the years, rather than to fight crime.

“We have gone ahead to stop road blocks because we do not understand the reason why these road blocks should be there.

“This is the only country in the world that you have permanent road blocks. But really in security situations, road blocks are temporary measures that are only put in place after particular security issues have been taken care of.
“Unfortunately, we have made it a permanent feature of our security manoeuvres,” he said.

According the IG, “That is why we are doing everything possible to build the capacity of our officers. Capacity building is the key to effective policing in the country and from our analysis those road blocks were not doing us any good.

“In fact, they were greatly damaging the country's reputation and that of the Police Force. And so, we decided that those road blocks should go.”

He added that all the four premier police colleges in Enugu, Ikeja, Maiduguri and Kaduna would soon be rehabilitated and repositioned to deliver quality training to men of the force.

Abubakar said that the police were currently in a major transformational process, promising that the Force would soon metamorphose into a people-friendly, effective-crime fighting establishment.

He urged Nigerians to support the Force’s Community Policing Initiative by volunteering relevant information that would further strengthen the security of lives and property.

On November 4, he was finally released from the NDLEA’s custody when the agency could not find any drug on him not after he had spent about 21 days with them.

Baba Suwe’s NDLEA brouhaha became blown up due to his status as a top Nollywood actor.

Seven months after the world stage drama, the Commander of NDLEA, at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, Mr. Hamza Umar has finally opened on the saga that almost put its agency’s credibility into the mud.

In an interview with Sunday Trust, Umar said, ”this machine you are seeing here is 99.9 percent accurate. It has never said this man has this and we find contrary. You said apart from, I know you are going into Baba-Suwe’s matter.”

Clarifying the Baba Suwe’s unique case, he said further, “let me clarify myself. You see, before his arrest, I do not know who Baba-Suwe is. [size=15pt]My binding factor with Baba-Suwe is that machine.[/size]

“He was travelling with a group of friends and the machine picked him and said he had drugs concealed in him. When the matter was becoming controversial, I asked if there is a good screening centre here in Lagos.

“I was told of the University of Lagos teaching hospital and I asked that they should take him there. I did so to have an independent opinion from a professional. He was taken there and the Chief Radiologist said look, I have to get my Consultant. He and the Consultant examined, tested and screened him with their machines and gave me the report in writing.

[size=20pt]“Our medical team collected the written report and brought to me. The hospital said in the report that Baba-Suwe had drugs concealed in his stomach. In the report, they said they analyzed him from the head, to the body and down to the legs and concluded that his stomach is invested with particles that are consistent with narcotics.[/size]

“But they said in the report that they cannot specify the drugs by name. They suggested that it could only be specified by laboratories. Mind you, I am not an expert in that field. I am only an officer of the NDLEA.

“If you were in my shoes will you release that man? I did not stop at that anyway, I insisted I wanted another report from another group of experts. I was told that there was another well-equipped place that they call Me-Cure here in Lagos. I said take him there also. I referred him there and they gave me the same result,”the NDLEA boss concluded.

The anti-drug agency has been ordered by the court to pay the sum of 25 million naira to Baba for violation of his rights. This order is being appealed at the Appeal Court.

Anurugwo: The officials of Edo State Veterinary Services have reported the circulation of tuberculosis infested beef. Dr Charles Aibaogun the Director of Veterinary Services gave the warning at the weekend in Benin. He said the infested beef is being sold in markets by traders who brought them from unapproved slaughter houses across the state.

He said some of the infested organs were discovered in the course of meat inspection in an abattoir in Benin City.
