Travel / Re: Lagos Light Rail To Commence Operation 2022 – Official by adef1(m): 12:11pm On Aug 13, 2018
We really do need to take our leaders to account. If there was a credible opposition in the PDP, news such as this would've ensured their popularity would soar past APC with little effort! Instead, it is left to citizens to make comments on Nairaland and other forums, which in reality does little to change the current situation. A simple google search throws up the following:

1. In 2016, $200M was granted as world bank loan for this same project - https://www.businessdayonline.com/business-economy/article/200m-world-bank-loan-is-for-execution-of-lagos-light-rail-project-lai-mohammed/

2. This 'project' has been ongoing for 10 years! - https://guardian.ng/saturday-magazine/cover/a-decade-after-lagos-rail-project-still-crawling/

3. In 2014, $981M was borrowed from the world bank for the same project

4. The same blue line was supposed to be operation in 2016 - So 'project' is late by 2 years, even though we were told by the commissioner of transport it was 95% complete - https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/04/lagos-blue-line-rail-95-completed-says-commissioner/

These are staggering amounts that will have to be repaid guys. Usual method of payments is through bonds. If the government is having to repay bonds maturing every 2 years since 2017, they won't have the funds to put into the actual projects themselves. See this article credited to Fashola when he was still governor - https://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/10/lagos-spent-n160-bn-world-bank-loan-fashola/

My takeaway is this (after only 20mins google search) -

1. Monies raised have not been fully utilised for the purpose they were intended. If they did, the investments would've been generating returns which can be used to offset the debt. The 'shifting to the right' of the operational start date suggests we are well behind in terms of how funding secured has been used, make no mistake about that.

2. Monies are being diverted from public spending to finance the repayment of international bonds which must be repaid when due, or Lagos will struggle to raise finance in the international market in the future.

Unfortunately, we have a system in place where transparency is not the key cornerstone of our democracy. if figures are laid bare for all to see most of us will be able to make informed decisions as to who we want running the state.

We need to demand more from our leaders my friends. We and our children will still be paying for this debt, well into the future. To paint an even bleaker picture, this thread is only about the light rail. Imagine for a moment, what is happening in other areas.

I leave you with that thought.

Religion / Re: Money Ritual In Nigeria: Do You Have Any Evidence It Works? (Disturbing Photos) by adef1(m): 11:36pm On Jul 21, 2018
@OP - Of course it doesn't work! Think rationally guys - Lets even assume this spiritual money does exists. Is it money printed by the NSPMC? Can the serial number be traced in the database of monies printed by the mint? if not directly printed and traceable at the mint, the money is officially fake.

The only way any would-be money ritual millionaire wanna-be can realistically make money from human organs (more the heart, kidneys etc and not breasts and limbs) is if they sell these on the international black market. There is a ready market for human organs around the world, but of course it requires careful preservation, so from what we can gleam from the pictures these would not make the cut. Most are probably being done by folks who really have no idea about this line of 'business'.

For all the tortoises, heads in calabashes, coffins, wardrobes with dead humans who vomit money and any other such fantastic stories made up by people its all noise to distract from the likelihood of illegal organ harvesting especially when done badly.

I don't usually respond on NL, but concerned that with some of the responses here, our internet/technology based generation, with more information and tech at our finger tips more than has ever existed in the history of the world, more information and dissemination than was ever available in ancient Greece, Rome, and Babylon put together are struggling to see through such archaic and impossible schemes. I don't aim to disparage anyone, just stating that we need to confine such ideas to the dustbins of history and chalk it up as ignorance, which should not be rearing its head in our generation.

That Rolls Royce looks very much like a Silver Cloud produced in the 50s, but unlike one I've ever seen, because of the headlamp positioning. Most likely a rarity and a truly remarkable car.

If that were true, you will not be in your home or where you are now typing what you have typed...
You will probably be in a public square for #OCCUPY_Rebranded protest demanding for the RESIGNATION of all of our leaders for MASS failure....

The poster was obviously talking about the excess crude account and not the foreign reserves. I took your advise and 30seconds later, found this link credited to former CBN governor in January 2014. ECA was $2.5bn left just 10months ago.

'Do the needful' is a term a lot of my offshore Indian colleagues use to mean 'proceed as expected'. In Stella's case she's saying 'you know what to do, carry on as planned'. I suspect it's a term she picked up on her travels. It's not a widely used phrase.
Politics / Re: Atlantic Ocean Surge Kills 16 In Lagos (Pictures) by adef1(m): 1:31pm On Aug 20, 2012
19naia: My first thought was the same as yours but also sometimes it can come from distant bad winds in the ocean...I Searched on a web site "Latest earthquakes in the world-past 7 days." Just type that into google or so and there is a USGS (united states geological survey) list of all the significant quakes in the world..I checkit every day........The list shows an earthquake in the mid atlantic fault right on same latitude as nigerian coast..It was 5.2 quake aug 17 and is big enough to make small surge to reach lagos and even delta coastal regions. The 1st report was august 18, so maybe it was from august 17 event which took many hours to reach lagos..It is possible that offshore underwater ridges near lagos could have swelled the surge into lagos area....This is not an official report, only my own independant considerations....Be safe you ocean dwelling people and maybe Naija government has been right to remove all the waterfront settlers in lagos..I hope the government will offer alternative resettlement and not just evict them to wander lost....

Plausible as your comments may seem, I would've expected other West African countries to record/report ocean surges on a scale worse than Lagos, as some are much closer to ground zero suggested above than we are. Port Novo should have felt the impact just as much as Lagos. So far, Kuramo, Lekki, Elegushi areas have been commented on as being impacted. Methinks something more local occurred. We can't criticize Eko Atlantic at this point as I suspect an issue such as this would have been reported several times during the land reclamation. Cheers.
Politics / Re: Fashola Signs Lagos Road Traffic Bill Into Law-trucks Are Prohibited B/w 6am-9pm by adef1(m): 11:29am On Aug 03, 2012
I think a lot of logical comments here have identified there are major issues with this policy, which I shan’t restate here. My concern and focus here is that a legally qualified mind as Fashola’s (he is a SAN after all) is able to ignore the lack of clarity on some of the issues by signing this bill into law.

There are several aspects of this law that would not pass a first reading in saner climes. No eating?! Does that include drinking too? In a country where temperatures are in high 20s & 30s most of the time and air-conditioning is a luxury? Where I use my hands-free kit to take calls, am I breaking the law? why should that be? Its no different to if I had a passenger beside me and we were having a conversation!

Frankly, I’m terribly surprised by this lack of clarity and appropriate penalties for some of these issues. Knowing how things work in Nigeria, as had been commented many times in responses, government agencies will go into overdrive and translate the law as it suits them.

And another thing... there is such a thing as the highway code (its irrelevant whether motorists are aware of it or not, the road rules are the rules) why are the consequencies of not following the highway code being implemented? Does that not go back to the police? I believe its even out of LATSMA's jurisdiction! Why do we need extra punishment for rules that already exist? Again, I fail to see how Fashola's legal mind is working....

Terribly surprised.

Politics / Re: Why FG Reinstated Arunma Oteh by adef1(m): 10:28am On Jul 20, 2012
People, you are missing the main point/issue here!

Forget what the law makers and SEC employees think about Oteh for a second and think about how the markets are reacting to the news. It was mentioned in the dailies today that the markets have lost all their gains from the last week based on this news. Lack of confidence in the management of the SEC is being translated to real losses for the economy. This is the bigger issue! Whether or not Oteh is guilty is irrelevant at this point; fact is, markets are reacting downwards and as such she should not accept the position to ensure stability if she really is passionate about its growth. My 2 cents.
Business / Re: "Very Friendly" IMF Backs Sanusi’s Banking Reforms by adef1(m): 12:17pm On Sep 16, 2009
More to the point: What has IMF told the West in the aftermath of the banking crises?

1. Britain will bailout its banks to the tune of 195 Billion pounds (estimate) by the time this recessionis over.
2. No banker has gone to prison in the last one year for the collapse
3. Bankers are being IMPLORED to be prudent
4. Bankers are NOT listening. GoldmanSachs will be paying huge bonuses this year.
5. Banks are still NOT lending to small business but declaring profits based on taxpayers funds injected into them (quantitative easing, )
6. I have never seen a list of debtors published for banks in the west. NO BANK OR FINANCIAL REGULATOR HAS PUBLISHED A LIST OF ITS NON PERFORMING LOANS, NOT EVER, IF YOU'RE NOT SERVICING YOUR LOAN, THATS SOMETHING YOU SHOULD SORT OUT WITH YOUR BANK! NOT SPLASHED ON THE PAGES OF NEWSPAPERS BY THE FINANCIAL OMBUDSMAN!

I have not read a single IMF report about how the west is not doing enough to address this issue once for all. The structure remains as it was before the collapse, nothing's changed,

IMF, Fitch, Standard and Poor, they've all shown themselves to be totally inadequate. Should we be listening to them, erm, NOT BEFORE, NOT NOW.
Religion / Re: Could It Really Be That A Person Can Be Born Gay? by adef1(m): 8:29am On Jun 07, 2009
Hi guys,

First time commentator on this thread.

@Oyinda, you show extreme depth in your thoughts which I find refreshing. Everything you've said makes complete sense. Lets push your thought-process further,

1. The ratio of gay to heterosexuals is heavily balanced in favour of heteros at the moment. Do you see a time in the very very very (exponetial) distant future where that ratio could change?

2. Nature by its very design considers ALL permutations, due to the adaptability of its species to their respective environment. As per reproduction (which is essentially the topic of this thread) we have Man, Woman, Boy, Girl, Baby Boy, Baby Girl, Animals (in all forms). Single digit IQ would be able to combine all the possible scenarios, which possibly explains some of the examples we have had since the begining of time.

Is it morally right? That's left for society to decide, I guess. Let's not forget however that the same societal views differ from culture to culture and indeed civilization to civilization. But from nature's point of view: There's no right or wrong. There's never been a right or wrong.

Family / Re: Would You Marry Someone Out Of Pity? by adef1(m): 4:34pm On Apr 30, 2007
Yet instances of where couples have been married without knowing each other before their wedding day (in some cases, just a few weeks/months) abound. Take arranged marriages in india, pakistan and some parts of asia for example. people stay together for a long time. because they have no choice, they try to make it work and to a greater extent, suceed. maybe its an overated emotion this love. As with couples that "love" themselves, this emotion like all others, tend to fade. just like u can't be angry all your life, or cry all your life or be happy all your life, you can't love all your life.

How do you account for the fact that even after you are married or going out with a guy/girl, you still meet people that tickle your fancy and would even possibly make better partners or spouses? you make a choice not to pursue such emotions as the end could be disastrous for all concerned.

And before someone interjects saying "but you didnt even have that in a loveless relationship to start with", the answer is they build it as they go along. Maybe not love, but a form of respect that arguably performs the same purpose. Call it "mind over matter" if you will, the end result in both cases, is the same.

Opinions please-----

Romance / Re: Why Do I Get Harassed By Guys? by adef1(m): 12:20pm On Apr 30, 2007
Dearest Tega,

Its good to see you. Its been a while.

In response to your comments, I have no doubt that you know exactly what you want. However many a young woman who haven't learnt lessons in this fine art of courtship would naturally stick their heads in the sand as these problems unfold, unsure of what to do and how to tackle it, while enjoying the company of the interested parties. However women in their late 20s seem to have gone through this process and are more definitive in what they want, making them more grounded, or as you say, mature.

But with great power comes responsibility and many a woman have fallen under the spell and gotten drunk on it. Its not about dressing, as i believe anyone is allowed to wear what they want. With our good friend alert, i think theres something else missing, like shes looking for a father figure or something (not being psychic-- again smiley) only she will know.

I haven't the slightest doubt that you attract a lot of guys, but are able to state clearly the boundaries of where the association stops. Alert seems to need to learn that no matter how appealing the guy may be, it only causes heartache (and to some extend tummy ache) if one has too much food on one's plate.

Glad to see you dear girl. Respond soon. xx

PS: Don't try to pass yourself as early 20s Tega, we know the truth!   grin

Hi Alert, I don't usually respond to threadings such as this but felt compelled to do so as i have been in the kind of situation you have described. I will tell you something for nothing though, there are lots of excellent advice here already, which if you search yourself  sincerely, you would/can relate to what fellow threaders are saying. I will refer you to these well thought out comments by :

I can't speak for the guys around you, but i'm pretty sure you havent told them where u stand which is why they hang around you. Youre probably in your early to mid 20s and maybe even born in the early part of the year (don't want to sound psychic) theres so much going on in your head. Take time to find out who you are first, because there are probably many unhappy people around you and only u can stop that continuing-----

I once saw an advert: "The difference between men and boys, is in the price of their toys". All the stuff mentioned are necessitites, but when it comes to classy, you are looking for individual products, whose designs will last the test of time and of course cause a big dent in your pockets! Flat screens for instance, if you havent shelled out for a bang and olufsen, or maybe the more affordable pioneer plasmas and Samsung LCD (top of the range), a universial LCD touch screen remote control, a toaster by dualit or siemens etc. One should consider anything less a necessity. what do y'all think?
