The reason he became a prof that early is that he does not possess a PhD degree. When you add how many years it takes to get a doctorate in Nigeria to 33, you'll see the actual year it would have been for him, and also why others with that degree may become profs later in life. 58-Year-Old Homeless Nigerian Man Dies Inside Brutal Cold In Chicago, He Was Homeless For Over 15 Years

WICKER PARK — Marcus Faleti, a 58-year-old homeless man who was a fixture in Wicker Park’s namesake park, died early Sunday from hypothermia and alcoholism, a lethal mix that the Nigerian man known by many had vowed to fight in past winters. Often seen sitting on a bench reading the Sun-Times or Wall Street Journal, or pushing his shopping cart overflowing with scavenged items through the park, Faleti died at 12:09 a.m. Jan. 1 at Presence St. Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center, according to a spokeswoman for the Cook County Medical Examiner.

The primary cause of Faleti’s death, which was ruled an accident, was hypothermia, and the secondary factor was alcoholism, said the spokeswoman, Becky Schlikerman.

The temperature registered at O’Hare Airport around the time of his death was about 24 degrees, with a windchill of 18 degrees.

Faleti was born in Nigeria and came to Chicago 24 years ago, according to Nick Nixon, who became friends with Faleti in 1992 when they were working as day laborers on the city’s northwest side.

“He was a person, he was somebody. He will be missed,” Nixon said, adding that there was “something really positive about” Faleti that attracted others to him.

“He was a good influence on everyone. Everyone liked him. He was a big newspaper reader and a very smart man,” Nixon said.

Faleti’s only immediate family is believed to be an adult daughter who lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Nixon said he is hoping he can get access to Faleti’s flip phone, which is at the morgue, in order to contact her.

Clare Rodriguez, a Chicago Park District supervisor at Wicker Park, 1425 N. Damen Ave., was unable to comment on Faleti’s death on behalf of her employer, but shared her personal experiences.

“Marcus was a part of the fabric of this park. I could always count on him to be honest with me and to protect the interests of Wicker [Park]. He was a kind man and an icon of Wicker’s grounds,” Rodriguez said.

Ald. Joe Moreno (1st) knew Faleti for more than 10 years.

“I will miss our talks on the bench in Wicker Park. He was a smart man and well read and yet another example of why our country needs to focus on the issue of substance addiction,” Moreno said.

During the brutally cold 2014 winter, Faleti had refused to go to a homeless shelter but Moreno eventually convinced Faleti to stay indoors after securing a spot for him at a shelter in Humboldt Park.

“He was most concerned about his shopping cart because he could not bring it. I stored it in my garage until he returned [to the park],” Moreno said.

Though the home address for Faleti given to the hospital upon his admission was listed as the Franciscan Outreach Shelter, 1645 W. LeMoyne Street, that facility is a daytime treatment center and soup kitchen and not an overnight shelter.

Ed Jacob, executive director of Franciscan Outreach Association, said the nonprofit group’s records show Faleti had been eating at the soup kitchen and receiving daytime case management services since 2008.

“It makes me realize we’ve got more work to do, that life is fragile — especially for the guests of Franciscan Outreach,” Jacob said of Faleti’s death.

In a written statement, Jacob said that the Franciscan Outreach Association community is “deeply saddened” by Faleti’s passing.

Police in Delaware charged a woman with fatally stabbing her husband in their home after an argument about him cheating on her with her own sister and their nanny's daughter.

New Castle County police charged Temitope Adebamiro with first-degree murder on Friday after being called to her home in Bear early on Thursday morning because of an 'unknown problem'. 
When they arrived at the home around 12:40am, they found 37-year-old Adeyinka Adebamiro unconscious in a bedroom with a stab wound to his upper body and his wife in bloody clothes.


Paramedics pronounced him dead about an hour later and the Delaware Division of Forensic Science ruled Adeyinka’s death a homicide, according to the News Journal.

The husband, Adebamiro, their two children and a nanny had been living at the home for two years. 
Adebamiro, 35, and the victim had been married for more than ten years, although she told police he had physically abused her while she was pregnant, cheated on her with several women and sent her to Nigeria on multiple occasions.
She said he last sent her to Nigeria over Christmas so he could spend it with the nanny's daughter.
Detectives determined there was a verbal argument that led to a physical altercation. 
The argument allegedly began after the victim found photos on Adebamiro's cellphone that she had taken of pictures he had stored on his mobile phone. 

The stored pictures were of Adebamiro's sister and the nanny's daughter.

At some point after the argument, a single stab wound severed the victim's carotid artery and jugular vein.
Adebamiro's story about what happened changed several times and she suggested that her husband killed himself as well as mentioned a power outage that never happened. 

She did not ever admit to the killing, but investigators felt there was enough evidence to charge her.


In addition to murder, Adebamiro was charged with possession of a weapon during the commission of a felony.
She was arraigned and committed to the Delores J Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution where she is being held without bail.

I tried to get people who work in the fertilizer industry in Nigeria to harness the abundant zinc resource found in Ebonyi, Middle Belt and a couple other places in Nigeria in producing NPK fertilizers fortified with zinc to help alleviate zinc deficiency. But the interest was not there unless the money comes from international donors. How can you expect a foreign donor to give you capital to add value to your commercial product even when you have not shown the interest and willingness to at least start the process of value addition?

The bridge to somewhere: a plea for government attention for Nchara

Nchara in Perspective: Nchara is a rural community in the Oloko group of autonomous communities, Ikwuano Local Government Area, Abia State. Nchara is comprised of two sister villages, Akanu and Otoro, with an estimated combined population of about 20,000 inhabitants. Due to its location, Nchara has for centuries stood at the cross-road to different parts of Igboland and non-Igboland alike, being bounded in the north by Ohuhu Nsulu (an Ngwa community); in the west by Usaka Eleogu (an Ikwuano community) and Amachi Nsulu (an Ngwa community); in the east by Obeohia Okike (an Ikwuano communities), and in the South by several Annang-speaking communities of Akwa Ibom State.
The history of Nchara has been one of mixed events, with high and low episodes occurring at different times. Notable events such as the Aba women’s riot of 1929 share a history with Nchara. One of the main leaders of the Aba women’s riot, madam Ikonna Nwanyiukwu Enyia, who was originally from Oloko village, was married into an Nchara family. In fact, but for the distortion of history by the then powers that be, the story of ‘‘Aba women’s riot’’ should have been that of ‘‘Oloko women’s riot’’. Nchara had also produced at different times the paramount Ezes (namely Eze Otutubuike and Eze Pipi) of Oloko clan, comprising nine autonomous villages. Furthermore, one of the earliest foreign-trained university graduates of Ikwuano, late Sir Onyeonoro Arungwa, was from Nchara; Sir Arungwa also was the first indigenous principal of Wilcox Memorial Comprehensive Secondary School Aba. Despite these lofty achievements however, unfortunate, albeit infrequent, communal clashes with Annang neighbors over land ownership have also marred the otherwise impeccable history of Nchara.


Socio-economic and infrastructure dynamics of Nchara: Like all of her neighbors, Nchara is an agrarian community producing staple food and commercial crops such as cassava, oil palm, yams, vegetables, plantains, and fruits that include oranges, bananas and pears. In addition, goats, sheep and chicken can be seen either in family pens or grazing about in the rusty scenery. While these different produce feed the people, substantial portions of them are sold in both local markets in the community, and in neighboring and far-flung communities such as Amachi-Nsulu, Usaka-Umuofo, Nenu, Ndoro-Oboro, Umunkpeyi, Ndiolumbe, and Ariam. Also, notable among these markets is ‘‘Ahia Uzo’’, so named because of its situation on a road leading directly to one of the Annang communities to the south, as well as other Annang markets such as those in Nto Edino and Nto Ekpe. This makes Nchara both an agrarian and a commodity marketing community.
By the fact of its location in Ikwuano, Nchara is only about 22 kilometers from the seat of the government of Abia State in Umuahia. As such, one would expect Nchara to be a nice, livable, even if rural, suburb of Umuahia Township. But alas, for a village with such historical pedigree, Nchara has been developmentally slow, almost abandoned. For example, electricity came to Nchara for the first time in 2009; initial efforts to acquire electricity were driven by ordinary villagers, before the government came to the rescue. Also, portable water supply, which was only installed recently, has been sporadic. Even though a community water tank constructed by the NDDC is conspicuously located in a corner of the community, actual water provision from it is off and on. Until its installation, most inhabitants sourced all of their drinking water from the village river; a river that separates them from some of their neighbors to the west and south. The purpose of this article is to bring to the attention of Abia State and Ikwuano LGA governments the condition of the bridge connecting Nchara with its neighbors, and by extension, with Aba the commercial nerve center of Abia State. The anticipation for writing this article is that this bridge would be reconstructed.


The bridge to somewhere: As indicated, access to and from Nchara through the river was enabled by a bailey bridge. The bridge served very strategic roles. Notably, the bridge provided access to thousands of hectares of arable farmland across the river, enabling farmers to produce their crops and to move their farm produce back home for processing. Also, it was through it that market people transported their produce to the numerous out-of-town markets in Ngwa land, from where such produce find their way to Aba. Furthermore, the bridge provided rapid access to the Old Aba road through Umunkpeyi, cutting the transit time for alternate routes such as having to first get to Umuahia en-route Aba. This bridge had in 1979 collapsed under the weight of a truck that was transporting cement to a construction site in a neighboring village. Thankfully, it was reconstructed and completed around 1982 by the then government of Chief Sam Mbakwe of old Imo State.
Since then, due to poor maintenance culture, the bridge and its access roads have become death traps. For more than 10 years now, the bridge has been in a crumbled state (see photos), with rusty metal parts and rotting wooden planks hanging precariously in places. The state of the bridge has made it unusable for vehicular, bicycler, and pedestrian traffics; unwary pedestrians have been known to mis-step into the broken planks and plunging headlong into the river. Fortunately, no casualties have been recorded. However, the state of the bridge has caused untold economic hardship for Nchara villagers, as farming, trading and social activities that require crossing the bridge on daily basis have all been considerably hampered. The disused state of the bridge due to its current condition has also led to the abandonment of the access road, resulting in it being nearly overgrown by plants.


A plea for government attention: Igbo people are renowned for performing community self help projects, in many instances, taking on projects that otherwise are the responsibility of the government. It was in that spirit that then Imo State citizens, including those of Nchara, contributed and built the Imo airport at Owerri, during the regime of Sam Mbakwe. Several times in the past, both the bridge and access roads have been worked on, to limited degrees, by community self-help. In that same light, prior to the 2015/2016 Christmas/New Year celebrations, the main street across Nchara, which had become very impassable, was rehabilitated by a good-hearted private citizen, Mr. Uche Dimkpa. This gesture enabled citizens and visitors alike to enjoy some bit of road access during the celebrations. By the next rainy season, this modest effort would have been undermined by the elements and by inadequate maintenance efforts. At this time, the financial implications of reconstructing the bridge is beyond what Nchara people can bear on their own; hence, the need to alert the government to come to their rescue.


On this note, the people of Nchara are bringing the condition of the bridge and surrounding roads to the attention of both the Abia State and Ikwuano LGA governments. Nchara people have noted with admiration the great and commendable work of the present Abia State government in building roads and infrastructures in different communities. In that spirit, they are asking, as tax payers and bonafide citizens of the state, that a concrete bridge and road reconstruction be implemented for them as dividends of democracy, similar to what is being done for other communities in the State. The inhabitants of Nchara herewith reiterate that they deserve to enjoy the most basic of infrastructural developments, such as roads and bridges that any government should provide its citizens. Undoubtedly, rebuilding the bridge and fixing the access roads would help to ease the burden of commuters who now have to pass through Umuahia Township or Akwa Ibom State, to get to Aba. Moreover, it would help to restore commercial and agricultural activities in the area. Such activities are ever more important in these days of fallen crude oil prices and the need to diversify economic activities for not only Nigeria as a country, but also for Abia State. It is hoped that 2016 ushers in a new lease of life for Abia State, and Nigeria, so that rural communities such as Nchara will get the much desired and deserved development from the responsible tiers of government, and with that contribute their quota in driving the local and regional economies.

Speaking about rural roads, this is one that Okezie should also attend to. It connects towns/villages in Ikwuano with most LGAs is Ngwaland, including Aba as well as neighboring Akwa Ibom State

And it's not just vitamin A problem: 20-30% of the Nigerian population have zinc, vitamin B and iron deficiencies. All taken together leads to stunted growth, lack of cognitive skills, forgetfulness and low resistance to diseases (reduced immunity). Nigeria can easily tackle zinc and iron deficiencies since these are elements that can be readily added into fertilizers to feed the crops and subsequently humans who eat those crops. For vitamins, they have to either be genetically added to crops, taken as supplements or be synthesized by human body. And if your body is weak due to any number of reasons, then vitamins biosynthesis may be impaired.

In the developed world, a lack of these nutrients is not a big deal as supplements of them are sold OTC in most stores. Most Nigerians cannot afford these supplements; hence it is not a sustainable option there.

This is impossible. America needs the highly qualified foreigners to thrive. These specialized foreigners don't take jobs from Americans. Just walk into the postgraduate lecture room of any Engineering Department and tell me how many Americans versus immigrants you find pursing MS and PhDs. Only lowly paid Latinos working in farms or doing janitorial jobs and African immigrants working at McDonalds compete for jobs with Americans.
