I need to emigrate myself from America now that I can do so with all my money, savings, investments and certificates. If I allow myself to be taken out, I will only leave with the clothes on my back.

Lol! Been living here several years now, but fortunate to escape those scenarios (1-4). Certainly it's tougher in Nigeria (by far, I might add) than the US.

At first I thought it was an advertisement because of where they said ''let's discuss your options to change your life for the better''. But when I inquired further they said these are true facts of life in America.

This is information as seen in a US Bank (SunTrust Bank) lobby today

1. Up to 76% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck (what you call ''from hand to mouth'' in Nigeria)
2. Nearly 50% of Americans could not come up with $2000 in the event of an emergency
3. Almost 27% of Americans have no savings at all
4. Close to 70% of American parents have no idea how much to save for their kid's college


How do these facts compare with similar facts in Nigeria?

some staunch supporters of President Muhammadu Buhari are becoming frustrated and rethinking the roles they played in helping the president to power amid increasingly excruciating economic and political crises rocking the nation.

The supporters believe Mr. Buhari had so far failed to demonstrate that he has the wherewithal, and even the political will, to resolve the multifarious challenges the country is facing.

On Wednesday, Feyi Fawehinmi, with Twitter handle @Doubleeph, well known for his pro-Buhari/APC stance, surprisingly expressed disappointment in the administration, and apologized to his followers for convincing them to vote for Mr. Buhari last year,

“It is possible that I convinced a couple of people to vote for Buhari and the APC,” Mr. Fawehinmi said in his published article in The Scoop. “I owe them an apology. The instincts of these people is to run with their expired ideas directly in the face of all the contrary evidence i.e. the 21st century. In fact, they are not interested in evidence, they are so convinced of their own foolishness. A bunch of undercover communists and unreconstructed socialists.

“I have nothing in common with such people and yet I somehow donated money to them and canvassed people to vote for them. I will freely say that this is one of the biggest lessons I have learnt in my life so far.

“If I convinced even 10 people to vote for Buhari, then I owe them an apology. For not properly interrogating the people who offered themselves as the solution to Nigeria’s problems. Not because it would have made a difference but because it was the right thing to do. Nigeria was always the point.”

Regretting that he failed to deeply interrogate Mr. Buhari’s personality and capacity, he added, “If enough of us had done this, perhaps the APC would not have the confidence to be walking away so blatantly from the product it sold during the campaign as it is doing today.”

He said bringing respite to Nigerians had become a seemingly intractable challenge for Mr. Buhari’s Government “unless oil prices go back up significantly, there is really nothing coming out of the government that gives you any confidence they know what they are doing.









“The ‘smart’ people who were supposed to lead sensible reforms and drive the change agenda have been reduced to actors in a silent movie.”

He said the government had become a source of shame to him, as it now offers daily “a dose of high drama” in place of “a change agenda that was promised.”

“I feel sad and ashamed at the way things are unfolding…The government that promised change is now so bound up in politics that changing anything is practically impossible even when they know the thing is not working.”

Mr. Fawehinmi was reacting to threat by Agriculture Minister, Audu Ogbeh, to “shut” fertilizer firms found to be exporting their products instead of producing for the Nigerian market.

Threatening to shut businesses, Mr. Fawehinmi said, was capable of bringing humanitarian disaster upon Nigeria.

Mr. Fawehinmi’s article went viral and became a topic of intense debate on Twitter, with many users expressing “respect for the courage” to “tender his public apology.”

On Facebook, Oluseun Onigbinde, the Lead Partner of Nigeria’s budget and public policy analysis platform, Budgit, shared a quote from Mr. Fawenhinmi’s article, and, then tendered an apology too.

“Maybe I have not been bold to say it here,” Mr. Onigbinde wrote. “To put my entire reputation online for anybody when I am not guaranteed access to tell you my mind, I won’t do it again. I apologize too.”

“We will continue to help this government in the way we can because Nigeria First. We just need to be honest that we exaggerated the expectations of Buhari but it was two poor choices we had. We have to admit how to fix that.”

Then a commentator on Mr. Onigbinde’s update said, “A debate and a solid economic plan among others, should be a must for all candidates in the next general election. No more packaging!”

Besides the economic crisis the country is experiencing, which has been blamed on low oil prices, Mr. Buhari’s government has been severely criticized over the secret and illegal recruitments into the Central Bank of Nigeria, and the Federal Inland Revenue Service.

For a government that came to power promising to fight corruption, many Nigerians consider illegal recruitments as a breach of trust.

Weeks ago, some activists marched against the illegal recruitments in Abuja, accusing the government of corruption and nepotism.

Also, Mr. Buhari’s rating has dropped significantly following his failure to release comprehensive details of assets and liabilities he filed at the Code of Conduct Bureau.









On September 3, 2015, in the face of widespread criticisms, the presidency, through Garba Shehu, a presidential spokesperson, released a few details of assets and liabilities filed by President Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

The presidency promised that full details of the assets would be made public after they had been verified by the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).

Eight months after, the CCB said it had completed its verification of the assets, but the presidency has so far failed to release the details.

A few days before the government’s first anniversary, the presidency and the ruling All Progressives Congress denied that Mr. Buhari ever promised to deliver on some of his campaign promises within his first 100 days in office.

HOUSTON - A Fort Bend ISD high school student said he was forced to change his outfit after showing up to school dressed as a slave for “Decades Day” at his high school on Tuesday.

Brian Ibe is a senior at Ridge Point High School in Missouri City.



This week is spirit week, in honor of homecoming. Each day, the students dress up in costume according to the day’s theme.

On Tuesday, the theme was “Decades Day,” and Ibe showed up to school wearing a ball and chain and a shredded T-shirt splattered in fake blood, and he was carrying a pitchfork and bag of cotton.

“I decided to dress in the time when there were slaves, from about the 1600s to the 1800s,” Ibe said.

Ibe said he wanted to recognize the plight of his ancestors, but school administrators weren’t on the same page.

“They told me to take it off,” Ibe said. “They said I should take it off before it starts problems and makes people uncomfortable.”

Ibe ended up changing out of his costume to avoid an in-school suspension.

While he admitted some people might find the outfit offensive, he said it’s part of United States history and there is no reason to cover it up.

Fort Bend ISD spokesperson Amanda Bubela sent Channel 2 this statement:

“While I am unable to share specific information about any student, it is important to note that the RPHS administration has been reminding students that they will be enforcing the dress code despite the daily spirit week activities.

"If a student is dressed inappropriately, and/or if their dress is considered a distraction to the learning environment, they will and have been asked to change clothes. In the last couple of days, less than a dozen students have been asked to change or modify their clothing.

"Ridge Point High School is encouraging students to express their school spirit this week, while adhering to the dress code. It is important that the campus maintain a distraction-free learning environment.”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has told the immediate past Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Adesola Amosu (retd.); a former Chief of Accounts and Budgeting in Nigerian Air Force, Air Vice Marshal Jacob Adigun; and a former Director of Finance and Budget, Air Commodore Olugbenga Gbadebo, to forfeit the 33 properties they allegedly bought with stolen funds.


This, it was learnt, was part of the conditions for the plea bargain given to the three accused persons.

A security agent, who did not want his name in print, told our correspondent that apart from forfeiting the properties, Amosu, Adigun and Gbadebo would be asked to plead guilty, after which the EFCC would appeal to the court to temper justice with mercy.

The accused persons alongside eight companies are being accused of stealing N22.8bn from the coffers of the NAF between 2014 and 2015.

A source said, “We will not want to rock the boat because negotiations are still ongoing. However, since Amosu, Adigun and Gbadebo have opted for plea bargain, we expect them to permanently forfeit all the properties linked to them.

“Afterwards, they will enter a guilty plea and receive a reduced sentence. This was what we did for the Managing Director of the defunct Oceanic Bank, Mrs. Cecilia Ibru, who was jailed after she pleaded guilty and forfeited 103 choice houses and shares in 77 companies in Nigeria in 2010.

“It is the standard practice worldwide and it will save everybody’s time.”

Documents made available to SUNDAY PUNCH showed that Amosun, Adigun and Gbadebo had returned over N2.8bn to the Federal Government, while properties such as plazas, schools, mansions, farms, a hospital and a quarry had been seized from them.

While almost N2.6bn cash has been recovered from Amosu, Gbadebo has returned N190m. Adigun’s wife, returned some money as well.

The document further stated that properties recovered from Adigun were worth N9.6bn.

Some of the properties include a shopping plaza known as Capadar Plaza on Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent, Wuse 2, Abuja, which is worth N980m; a residential mansion on Lake Chad Street, Maitama, worth N450m; an executive mansion in Imo River Close off Dandube Crescent, Maitama, worth N710m, and a four-unit terrace on Agadez Street off Aminu Kano crescent, Wuse 2, worth N720m.

Some other properties said to belong to Adigun included a 35-room uncompleted hotel on Salt Lake Street, Maitama, Abuja; a parcel of land located on Bourdillon Street, Ikoyi, Lagos; a block of 12 service flats located on Agodogba Street, Park View Estate, Ikoyi, said to be worth N1.8bn and a quarry in Bwari area of Abuja worth about $694,000.

The source added that all the properties had been seized temporarily.

He added that some of the properties seized from Amosu were worth N1.5bn. They included a house on Adeyemo Alakija Street, GRA Ikeja, worth N250m; a duplex at House 11, Peace Court Estate, GRA Ikeja, worth N110m; a N40m property located at NAF Harmony Estate, Asokoro Base, and a five-bedroomed house at Valley NAF Estate, Port Harcourt, worth N33m.

Others include a hospital on Adeniyi Jones Avenue known as St Solomon Hospital, with equipment worth $2.15m; and a N95m house on Umaru Dikko Street, Jabi.

The properties seized from Gbadebo are said to be worth N495m. They include a fish farm worth N10m; a N20m poultry Lagos and a school known as Bloomsville International School, Divine Estate, Isheri Olofin , off Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Apart from Nigeria, Adigun and Amosu also own two homes in posh areas of London in the United Kingdom.

A detached house worth £875,000 (N333, 375, 000) at 93b Shirehall Park, London, NW42QU allegedly belonging to Adigun and another house at 50 Tenterden Grove, NW41TH allegedly belonging to Amosu and worth £1m (N381m) are also expected to be forfeited to the Federal Government.

However, investigations by our correspondent showed that the value of the houses had increased.

Our correspondent, who visited Zoopla.co.uk, which real estate agents use in valuing properties in the UK, showed that both properties were bought in August 2014.

According to the website, the property, which Adigun allegedly bought in August 2014 at the cost of £875,000 currently goes for £1,046,000, (N398,526,000).

It added that Amosu’s property, which it said was purchased in November 2014 at £1,850,000, (and not £1m as claimed by the EFCC), was now worth £2,175,000 (N828, 675, 000).

According to the property website, Amosu’s property has six bedrooms, six bathrooms and two sitting rooms.

Calculations by our correspondent showed that the cash and assets which the air force men might forfeit permanently added up to about N15bn which was more than three quarters of what they allegedly stole.

Speaking with our correspondent recently, the Chairman, Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Prof. Itse Sagay, said once a criminal matter had been brought to court and the accused person brought up a negotiation, there must be some form of punishment.

According to him, plea bargain is done all over the world, adding that it saves time and money.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria explained that plea bargain in Nigerian law is for the purpose of saving the state the time and resources from prosecuting a case over a long period of time and still end up not achieving a conviction.

He added, “The point I want to make is that once a case has been taken to court, there can be no negotiation of return of money without punishment. That is impossible and can never happen because if that happens, then it is breach of the law.”
