I ‘graduated’ from kid robber to notorious car snatcher

Operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, in Lagos State, have arrested a gang of car snatchers suspected of terrorizing Ikeja and other parts of the state for a long time. The suspects, Sadiq Olayibi, Tolani Adeyinka, Adeleke Teslim and Olayemi Akiloye, met their waterloo when SARS operatives swooped on them at various parts of the state. Olabiyi described himself as a kid robber who graduated to a full blown car snatcher. Also arrested was a 50-year-old woman, Lawal Ireti, who was described as the gang’s informant.

Police sources said Ireti provided other jobs for the gang when they were not snatching cars. According to the sources, the woman suspect provided information to the gang that led to the robbery of the N8 million from a micro finance bank in Ogba area of Ikeja.

“The gang specialized in car snatching and they terrorized Ikeja and environs for a lng time. They operated during the weekends and their targets were exotic cars. Their activities gave the police, residents and night crawlers in Ikeja sleepless nights and the state Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, in his bid to stem the gang’s operation, ordered the officer in charge of SARS, SP, Abba Kyari, to trail and apprehend the bandits.

Kyari, who swiftly swung into action, sent undercover operatives into streets to shop for stolen vehicles. Their efforts paid off when they stumbled on oen of the gang members who attempted to sell a stolen Toyota Camry to the undercover operatives. He was arrested and his arrest pave the way for the arrest of other members of the gang including Ireti the 50-year-old woman”, one of the sources told Sunday Vanguard.

The source added that members of the gang got wind of the arrest of their member and they made effort to flee the country. “We arrested Tolani Adeyinka, at the South Africa Embassy, after he had secured a visa to flee the country. Sadiq Olabiyi was picked up at Ajah area of the state, he has also applied for a visa to tavel to Egypt. Adeleke Teslim and Olayemi Akiloye were picked separately at Ojo and Okokomaiko areas of the state,” the source narrated.

Meanwhile, when Sunday Vanguard interviewed the suspects at Lagos State Command Headquarters, Ikeja, they confessed to the crime, but Olabiyi blamed his involvement in crime to lack of prper training. The 27 year-old man said, “I am the first child of my parents. My father did not have a good job, which made us very poor. I was born in Ketu. As a young boy, I used to go to the market at Mile 12 to assist some people selling stolen goats. I usually helped them to offload the goats from their vehicles and, from there, I learnt how to drive.

When I graduated from secondary school, I joined the business full time. I stole several goats, I would travel to some south western states to steal goats. While I was doing that, I met Tolani Adeyinka. He and Adeleke Teslim and one other had started snatching cars then. They knew I was a good driver; so they asked me to join them. We stole a lot of cars together and we operated mostly in Ikeja, Ogba and Agege areas.

We usually struck weekends when fun seekers were on the streets grooving and our targets were mostly Toyota, Honda and Mercedes Benz cars. We had ready buyers all over the state and we would deliver a stolen car to any of the buyers who make the highest bid. We sold Toyota cars for N250,000 and Honda Accord from N300,000. I got between N100,000 and N150,000 after each operation, I spent my money on myself, I bought good clothes, rented an apartment at Ajah and bought a land at Ikorodu, where I am building a three-bedroom flat apartment.

But sometime in July, Ireti brought us a job where we stolen the sum of N8 million from a micro fiance bank. I don’t know the name of the bank but she and a male partner brought the job to us. I thought they were police informants trying to set me up and I ignored their calls from close to two weeks. When I finally met them at a bar in Ikotun they told me that they got my phone number from one of my friends who told them I could do the job.

The job was at Ikeja and they asked us to wait soemwhere for the car conveying the money to pass. Ireti was there to point the car for us. After she did, we followed the car alongn Ogba and double crossed it. I was the one driving. Tolani Adeyinka and Adeleke Teslim bolted out with their guns and they snatched the bag containing the money and all the occupants’ mobile phones before we zoomed off. We shared the money equally, four million naira went to Ireti and her partner and my gang shared the rest. I got one million naira as my own share.”

Lagos: Cultists rape woman, kill husband, three others during clash

LAGOS - Rival cultists, Tuesday night, clashed in Somolu and Ketu areas of Lagos, leaving four persons dead and several others injured.

In Ajelogo area of Ketu, it was gathered that suspected members of Eiye confraternity stormed a suspected rival's home identified simply as Seyi in the wee hours of Monday.

He was dragged outside and clubbed to death, after the cultists had raped his wife in front of him and flung his nine-month old baby out of the bed.

Vanguard gathered that three persons were arrested by policemen from Alapere division. The suspects said to have been transferred to the state Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba, were reportedly leaving the scene when they were accosted.

Seyi's widow, who is yet to come to terms with her husband's demise, told policemen at the station that there had been threats on her husband's life by the cultists, who accused him of being an informant to another cult group, confraternity.

The Somolu clash

Meanwhile, in Somolu area of Lagos, Tuesday night, what was described as a reprisal attack on the group that killed Seyi left three persons dead.

The cultists were said to have stormed Ajose area, where they first shot one Tunde dead. The late Tunde's assailants were said to have accused him of raping one of their member's pregnant wife during an earlier attack in Ponrele area of Abule Ijesha.

The attack said to have started at 10.30 pm was launched at Fadipe, Popoola and Oreofe areas.

Vanguard gathered that while the cultists were approaching a street in Bariga, their rival group laid ambush for them. Dangerous weapons such as cutlasses, axes and gun were said to have been freely used in the ensuing fight.

Contacted, spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Ngozi Braide, confirmed the clash in Epe

She said though there was claim that only one person died during the clash but no official report had been made to that effect. She noted that the police had not seen any corpse either.

Lagos: Landlord dupes 100 prospective tenants

An Ebutte Metta Magis-trate Court in Lagos, Thursday, adjourned the case against a landlord, Alhaji Ishola Salawudeen, of 59, Oriola Street, Alapere, Ketu, Lagos State, who collected rent from over 100 unsuspecting tenants with the promise of giving them a flat in a new building he was erecting on his property.

It turned out that none of the persons, who paid for the said building, which was under construction, was given a flat and in some cases, more than four persons were given the keys to the same flat.

One of the victims, Mrs Ganiyat Bashoru, who was at the court lamented that she had just done her introduction after paying N475,000 for a two-bedroom flat to Salawudeen, hoping to move into the new apartment with her husband.

Mrs Bashorun, who was in court for the hearing of the case, which could not come up as the magistrate was said to be on leave, said she had paid Salawudeen the said sum for 18 months.

She said Salawudeen had promised her and other prospective tenants to come for keys to the flat on July 16, and on getting there, she met others, who were also there to collect keys to their flat.

Bashorun said that the developer duped over 100 prospective tenants to the tune of N34.3 million.

According to her, "since the incident, it has not been easy for us because we have been squatting with family and friends and people have been running around for us."

Meanwhile, the case was adjourned till November 6.

There is no pervasive osu caste system in Igboland. In fact there is no osu thing in Abia State. In areas where it allegedly occurs (Imo and Anambra) it has so almost gone into extinction that like Abagworo said, it comes up only during marriages and that is for very few traditionally-rooted families. I know you are acutely anti-Igbo and no amount of truth about Igbos will make you change your little mind. But hey! Who cares about your narrow-minded opinion? APC Considers Zoning Vice Presidency to S’East

As the All Progressives Congress (APC) continues to tinker with a strategy to gain nationwide acceptance and triumph over the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2015 general election, the party may have decided to zone the vice presidency to the South-east geopolitical zone, THISDAY has learnt.

Sources within the APC leadership informed THISDAY that contrary to the widespread belief that it would zone the number two slot to the South-west, its target is the South-east, in order to break the stranglehold the PDP has in the region as well as the South-south zone.

They said the South-east is critical to the party as it moves to gain nationwide spread and acceptability in the key geopolitical zones in the country.

One party official explained that APC would rather zero in on the South-east for the vice presidency because it is confident that it already has the South-west and North-west, the zones that account for the largest number of registered voters, in the kitty.

“Our strategy is to pair a northern Moslem candidate with a Christian running mate from the South-east, as this will enable us capture votes from the north, South-east and parts of the South-south, which also boasts Igbo-speaking indigenes.

“By zoning the vice presidency to the south east, we would also be helping our brothers across the Niger (South-easterners) actualise their quest for the presidency, as the vice-president is just a heart beat away from the president.

“Under the current zoning arrangement that the PDP is offering the South-east, people from the zone would have a slimmer chance of capturing the presidency in the foreseeable future.

“But with the vice presidency in their grasp, their dream will be easier to attain,” the APC official explained.
Other APC sources also confided in THISDAY that President Goodluck Jonathan and PDP might have got wind of the APC’s zoning formula and moved to scuttle it by putting pressure on the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) to disqualify a former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, from contesting for APGA’s governorship ticket for the Anambra election.

“Had Prof. Soludo secured the APGA ticket, contested the governorship election and won, it would have been difficult for the PDP to convince him to return to its fold, given the way it has treated him.

“He would have been riped for the picking by APC and would have been a formidable combination with whomever he is paired with.
“Soludo’s emergence posed a serious threat to PDP, as he is popular, cerebral and would have galvanised the South-east votes for APC. That is why he was blocked,” revealed one source.
