No brotherhood in this! Siasia tells Ethiopia coach

Samson Siasia says there will be no brotherhood when Nigeria play Ethiopia in a Nations Cup qualifier on Sunday March 27. Ethiopia’s coach is a Nigerian named Ifem Onuora.

“I really do not know him. All I know is that he is a Nigerian based in the UK. He must be a good coach to have landed the Ethiopian national team coach job”, Siasia said.

The Ethiopian Football Federation had last July officially signed a one-year contract with the British coach of Nigerian descent.

Ifem Onuora, 43, is on a monthly salary of $13,000, together with free telephone, housing and automobile.
Onuora is said to have acquired experience in coaching.

Ifem “Iffy” Onuora was born 28 July 1967 in Glasgow, Scotland where he played. His last job was assistant manager at Lincoln City. He acted as manager during the absence, due to illness, of Peter Jackson.

It is the first time that the Ethiopians would hire a foreign coach and pay that much. By Ethiopia standard the salary is reasonable.

“I must grab the three points before thinking about Iffy Onuora and where he comes from. No brotherhood in this,” Siasia insisted.

“I cannot say we will whack or wallop the Ethiopians. Let’s get the three points, other things could follow in terms of scoring margin”, he said

The Ethiopian coach is Nigerian from Igboland. Always Igbo. wow!

Why Jonathan Rejected Pact With Ciroma, Others

It emerged in Abuja on Friday that President Goodluck Jonathan has so far refrained from signing any pact with Alhaji Adamu Ciroma-led Northern Political Leaders Forum (NPLF) because of certain demands considered as “unrealistic” put forward by the group.

It was learnt that following the visit by President Jonathan to Ciroma’s house in Abuja in February, some leaders of the group had concluded on the need to support the president.

A list of members that would join the Jonathan campaign was actually prepared for ratification by the president.

But sources said that upon the intervention by some pro-zoning agitators, the group changed its tactics and decided to draw up some demands that would be presented to President Jonathan.

A contentious part of the demand is the quest by the NPLF to know who Jonathan would support as his successor in 2015.

The group was also said to have demanded a concrete agreement on whether the president would not contest in 2015.

A source said that the group wanted to know that if Jonathan would not seek reelection in 2015, he should give an insight to his successor.

The team selected by the president to meet with the Ciroma group was said to have found it difficult and impracticable to discuss such demands with the president.

It was, however, gathered that when Jonathan demanded to know the level of progress of the meetings, the team members said it would be better for the president to meet with the group personally.

A source said that some members of the Ciroma team opened the lid on the said impracticable demands last week.

A source close to the decision-making process said: The Ciroma group is asking the president to name his successor in 2015 and that he would guarantee their members some key ministries and parastatals. They said that once Jonathan’s successor is known, they would be able to come out strongly in his support.

“But the president is not God and he cannot possibly say what will happen in 2015 when 2011 poll has not taken place let alone say who will or will not succeed him,” the source said.

The sources further said that the president, apart from being human, is also against the culture of imposition, which the demand portends.

“The president does not own the country. He can only present himself for election and he does not want to sustain this culture of imposition that some NPLF leaders are suggesting. He believes that when the time comes, Nigerians would be made to decide on his successor after the candidates would have presented themselves for election and gone through party primaries,” the source further said.

The delay in a formal endorsement of Jonathan by the NPLF had led to a crack in its ranks last week, following the decision of some of its leaders to join a peace team canvassing for Jonathan among Northern emirs, Imams and political leaders.

The group led by former Head of State, General Abdusalami Abubakar, has Dr. Shettima Mustapha, Alhaji Bamangar Tukur and Alhaji Tako Yakssai as members.

The consultations, according to sources, would be rounded up this weekend.

Ogun PDP Leaders Remanded In Prison Over Forgery

The police, on Friday, charged some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders in Ogun State with forgery before an Abuja magistrate’s court over alleged substitution of the House of Representatives candidate representing Remo Federal Constituency, Dave Salako.

The politicians were remanded in Kuje Prison till Monday when their bail application will be heard.

The prosecution had dragged Dayo Soremi, Semiu Sodipo and others to court for allegedly substituting Salako’s name despite scoring the highest number of votes in the primary election.

The accused were alleged to have connived with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to substitute Salako’s name with that of Oladipupo Olatunde Adebutu.

The court later adjourned the matter till Monday to hear the bail application of the accused.

A federal high court sitting in Abuja had earlier refused an application brought by Salako asking it to restrain Adebutu from parading himself as the PDP candidate for Remo Federal Constituency in the forthcoming election.

The plaintiff (Salako), who is presently representing the constituency in the House of Representatives, had in a motion ex-parte filed by his counsel, Mr. Gani Bello, asked the court to stop Adebutu from parading himself.

INEC, PDP and Adebutu were joined as defendants in the case with reference number: ABJ/CS/355/2011.

But counsel for Adebutu, Mr. Ajibola Oluyede, responded by filing a motion to either dismiss the whole case because it was an abuse of court process or to consolidate it with a previous action filed by the PDP leaders in the constituency, led by Chief Olufemi Dehinsilu, against Salako.

Bandits invade Ondo, Ekiti, kill politician, four others

IT was a reign of terror on Wednesday night and yesterday morning in some communities in Ekiti and Ondo states as suspected gunmen killed a politician, guard, abducted some students and invaded two banks.

In Ido-Osi Local Council, suspected bandits killed the Organising Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Toyin Akinlade.

The same assailants were believed to have stormed Iropora Ekiti about 20 kilometres to Ilogbo, where they killed a night guard identified as Lawrence Adebayo.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Mohammed Jimoh, who confirmed the death of the two, said the police were investigating the matter.

In Ikare-Akoko, Ondo State, a mid-morning bank robbery yesterday left three persons dead and several others, including two policemen who engaged the hoodlums in a gun duel, wounded.

The dead included one of the robbers, an unidentified man who was in the banking hall and a passer-by, simply identified as Kazeem, who was hit by a stray bullet during the one hour that the cross-fire lasted.

The command said it had uncovered a plot by some politicians to scare electorate away from voting centres during the forthcoming elections with arm-wielding thugs.

Only on Wednesday morning, people in police uniform in Omuo Ekiti, Ekiti-East Local Council, killed two supporters of the PDP House of Representatives' candidate in Ekiti South Federal Constituency 2, Femi Bamisile.

In another bizarre circumstance, five students of the School of Health Technology, Ijero-Ekiti in Ijero Local Council of the state, were also on Wednesday evening abducted.

The school's provost, Dr. Francis Ibikunle and Mohammed (police spokesman), who confirmed the incident, said the victims had been rescued through the joint efforts of police, vigilance group and members of the community.

The students suspected the kidnappers to be ritualists.

Akinlade, a distributor of brands of beer in Ilogbo and its suburb, was killed at 12 midnight. He was said to have been tricked out of his house by the gunmen, who posed as his customers.

It was learnt that the vehicle, which conveyed the assailants was sighted in Omuo-Ekiti, where one Ojo Folagbade was reportedly shot.

Following the litany of killings, members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) have charged the police to be alive up to their responsibility by protecting the people and their property.

At a press briefing in Ado-Ekiti yesterday, Chairman of the Ado-Ekiti chapter of NBA, Mr. Owoseeni Ajayi, said the serial killings might hinder the conduct of the April polls if the police were not alive to their constitutional role of protecting lives and property.

Ajayi said NBA would take legitimate steps to ensure that the matter was not swept under the carpet by compelling the police to investigate their "men" who shot and killed two supporters of Bamisile in the community.

He urged the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Hafiz Abubakar Ringim and the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olayinka Balogun, to set up a panel of enquiry into the killings and bring the sponsors of the violent attacks to book.

A statement signed on his behalf by the command's Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Musa Adamu, warned that any politician apprehended for any form of violence would be dealt with accordingly.

Meanwhile, the Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adeyemo Adejugbe, has advised politicians in the state to play issue-based politics instead of embarking on campaign of calumny.

He made the plea in his palace in Ado-Ekiti when he received candidates of the ACN for the Senate and House of Representatives in Ekiti Central Senatorial District and Ekiti Central Federal Constituency 1, Mr. Babafemi Ojudu and Mr. Opeyemi Bamidele.

The gang members, who struck in Ikare-Akoko, whom eyewitnesses described as being in their 20s, forcibly entered two new generation banks in the town and ordered everybody to lie face down.

They were said to be shooting sporadically into the air to scare the people while residents who had their shops located near the banks hurriedly closed them.

A team of armed policemen who were drafted to the scene, however, did not arrive until the gang had successfully made away with undisclosed amount of money from the banks' vaults and from customers.

Ondo Police Command's Spokesman, Adeniran Aremu, said police were on the trail of the gang.

Ekiti ACN suspends senator for alleged forgery

The Action Congress of Nigeria has suspended the Vice-Chairman, Senate Committee on Works, Senator Bode Ola, over alleged forgery of documents purported to have emanated from the party and Independent National Electoral Commission.

The Chairman of the ACN in Ado-Ekiti Local Government, Mr. Oba Aladetoyinbo, announced the suspension of Ola in a statement made available to journalists in Ado-Ekiti on Thursday.

Ola, who is an indigene of Ado-Ekiti, had gone to Federal High Court in Abuja where he obtained an injunction which stopped the party's candidate in Ekiti Central Senatorial District, Mr. Babafemi Ojudu.

The chairman of the party in the state, Chief Jide Awe, had reported to the police in Ekiti State that Ola forged his signature and some documents which he tendered before the court.

But the senator, who said he was not disturbed by the suspension, said he could not be stopped by the ploy of Ojudu and Aladetoyinbo.

Ola said, "The suspension is malicious, unfair and unconstitutional."

He said he remained the candidate of the party despite the suspension because his candidacy had been affirmed by a court of competent jurisdiction.

The Independent National Electoral Commission in Ekiti State has said that the INEC documents which Ola tendered before the court did not emanate from the commission.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Alhaji Hussain Pai, said this in Ado-Ekiti on Thursday.

He said, "We have replied the ACN and we have told them that the documents did not emanate from us. All the documents and signatures did not come from us."

Ojudu, who addressed a press conference on Thursday, said it was shocking that the senator could be desperate to the extent of forging documents.

The candidate, who expressed the confidence that the court order would be vacated before the election on April 2, said the ACN had directed a Lagos-based lawyer to begin the process of vacating the order.

Ojudu, who made loads of documents alleged to have been forged by Ola said that the senator would be made to face the law for his actions.

He said, "Falana got the documents and what he saw was shocking. Bode Ola concocted the documents and figures in four local governments of the senatorial district. The most shocking is that he forged documents and declared himself the winner.

"Bode Ola got the court order based on fake documents and I can't blame the judge. He paid somebody who represented the ACN and the INEC at the court. The order has not been served on the INEC because that would reveal his secret."

ABEOKUTA – GOVERNOR Gbenga Daniel of Ogun State, yesterday, continued his tough stance in the politics of the state by declaring that those who promised to send him to jail after his tenure would have their forefathers sent to jail.

The Governor declared categorically that the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, had become a shadow of itself in the state as a result of the protracted crisis rocking the party, noting it had derailed from the noble ideals upon which it was founded.

He dismissed the threat by the PDP gubernatorial candidate, Chief Adetunji Olurin (rtd), that he (Daniel) would be jailed after completing his tenure on May 29, 2011, saying he was being unduly maligned while taking time to explain to the people why he decided to dump the party.

Daniel who spoke in Ijebu-Ode during the disbursement of grants-in-aid to Community Development Associations, CDAs, in the state for various self-help projects organised by the Ministry of Community Development and Cooperatives where N50 million was disbursed to over 600 associations across the 20 local government areas of the state.

Speaking against the backdrop of the crisis that trailed the selection of candidates in the PDP, Daniel noted that the development had dealt a big blow to the party's relevance in the state and that he cannot afford to remain there.

He said "by the special grace of God, in about two months and few days, we will be handing over to a new government in Ogun State and on that occasion it will be exactly eight years that I have mounted the saddle of leadership.

I think I must thank God that history is being written that I remain the longest serving governor of Ogun State. All of these could not have happened without the active support of all of you. In eight years we have not finished all the jobs we wanted to do but what I want to say here today, anywhere that I go I will say

the same thing.

When all of you did not know the party called PDP, we thank God that we came and toured all the 236 wards in the state , appealing to you that despite the fact that we do not like the PDP, let us vote for the party because of our Baba; Chief Obasanjo. And I thank God that you agreed with me and we succeeded in the election. But I want to tell you that the PDP of the last eight years is quite different from the current PDP.

Jonathan, not part of the Ogun PDP conspiracy

"The PDP that you hear about, in Ogun State, has become a shadow of itself and as somebody well brought up, there is no way I can afford to support PDP in the state. The PDP of today where you conduct primaries in the open and some people changed the process through the backdoor; that cannot be a party I would associate with.

“But our president, Goodluck Jonathan, is of good character and I am sure he did his best. We worked assiduously for his presidential ambition. The President was not part of the conspiracy that occurred in Ogun PDP. But let us go and vote en masse for the president.

However, after that there is nothing else we can do than to support the new political party in Ogun State; that is PPN. The founding fathers of Ogun State built the state on truth and we cannot go back to falsehood.

"The person that they chose as their candidate said he would send the governor (me) to jail. I asked myself: Is this the kind of government you want to run? You have not been elected yet, you are threatening somebody that has performed well and transformed the state with jail without any justification.

They think civilian government is run like the military. They think the way the military trampled on people's right is the way government would be run in Ogun; their forefathers will go to jail.”
