That is a private sector investment. Meanwhile, you do not need to be the biggest land owner to grow the most crop or have the biggest food processing facility to grow the most food. You guys need to grow out of your old ways and apply intensive (small land but more other inputs) rather than extensive (more land and less other inputs) agriculture which is not productive. See, the land of Israel is almost as small as one of the smallest states in Nigeria, and most of the land is dry and desertified. But they have developed their agriculture to the highest possible level with that small land mass. No be by size, na by might.

The only crops supported by the agro-ecology of the North (dry savannah) are grains: rice, maize, sorghum, millet and some beans. Of those, only maize and rice and beans are eaten substantially in the south. And boy, rice and maize are also grown in the south. Ebonyi state remains one of the largest rice producers (growers and millers) in Nigeria. Meanwhile both North and south for now depend largely on imported rice.

I have heard of millet and sorghum, but like me, I am sure most southerners who have not lived in the North have not eaten those crops. So they are economically unimportant to us.

From this map of Nigeria in which the country is divided roughly into 4 (so 25% each), Abdullahi is fairly correct that the North has 75% of the land in Nigeria. However, what does he mean by arable? How arable is the land in the North when desertification and drought has taken over at least 25% of the 75% land? So, of the so called 75% Nigerian land in the North, how much is actually arable? What crops do they grow in the North? Can the North grow all the different crops eaten by ALL Nigerians considering different rainfall and soil properties? If the land is actually so important, why is Nigeria still food insecure and imports virtually everything it consumes (except garri, yam, plantain/banana, leafy vegetables, and palm oil, which coincidentally are produced mostly in the south)? You raise beef. So? Anybody can start raising beef now using modern technology, instead of your 16th century pastoralism which is not taking you anywhere.

Management of Anambra State University Uli, now Odumegwu Ojukwu University has sponsored fifty lecturers from various departments on series of workshops and seminars abroad.


The benefiting lecturers are to acquire new skills and knowledge in a bid to fortify them intellectually. Countries they are expected to visit include Britain, Asian countries, Caribbean, China, Cuba and Finland.


This was revealed by the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Fidelis Okafor on Saturday in Akili-Ozuzor, Ogbaru local government area of Anambra state who said that the idea was to expose lecturers to international program to embrace knowledge and skills.


He said that the university had in the past signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with some foreign universities on exchange program and added that such agreement is now yielding positive results.


On the paucity of research activities in some Nigerian universities, he attributed it to lack of funding and revealed that Anambra state university is already breaking new grounds in research activities.


He however promised that he will continue to utilize available resources to its optimal value, despite challenges in funding which is the major problems against the universities in the country.

The Yoruba indigenes who abinitio are reluctant to migrate to settle within the country (outside their immediate enclaves) at least not so disposed to doing so as much as their counterpart of Hausa or Igbo extraction. This is not denying the fact that the Yorubas are equally itinerant but most of their voyages target overseas even over and above their counterpart of Igbo or Hausa tribes. Nowadays, Owerri and Igbo land in general have been besieged by an army of crusaders of mostly Yorubas engaged in the fast growing brisk business of either in the cloak of motivational councilors or alternative medical personnel. It’s either you are bored with adverts of mysterious skills of money-raking tricks like FOREX trading, oil and gas trading, call card printing and software seminar in product export trading knowledge impaction with minimal capital outlay promised or confronted with the invention of newly concorted alternative medicine with omnipotent healing and curative strength. Given the low ebb of literacy in our contemporary society, the gullibility of the poor and helpless public is being taken advantage of to infiltrate the health sector with lethal and deleterious concoctions launched into the system on daily basis especially when promoted by the media which remain the only credible avenue of information dissemination. The presence of these group is even overwhelming the curious helpless poor masses who are toadied to resort to trado-medicines as lee ways out of acute dearth of primary healthcare services delivery. Something needs to be done decisively to checkmate the activities of traditional medicines practitioners to safe this state the ensuing embarrassment imminent in the unregulated activities of the operators. The helpless poor masses are exposed to undue rip-off when cajoled into patronizing the products being marketed through the media and public address systems without checks and balances. Owerri residents and indigenes of Imo State are bored with trade promotions and adverts rendered in uncultured and vulgar languages adopted by these numerous operators, with funny business names of different types that leaves not much to be desired. If you tune in the radio or television station in Imo State, the air is fraught with buzzing noise of uncivil adverts and jingles coined in Languages bereft of courtesy all in the name traditional medicine promotions.
The list of them heard in one day c5uId send one’s mind. bugling, and most of them are of Yoruba land’s origin as if Imo State in general and Owerri particularly have become the commercial hob of traditional medical products. This is calling on the appropriate authorities in Imo State to intervene to checkmate the activities of these groups to ensure a deserving sanity in the health sectors. From reports reaching from the federal medical Center Owerri, cases of health complications encountered are not unconnected with self medication indulgence bandwagon associated with the unbridled patronage of loose trado-medical products promoted via the mass media. If it is not Yenkem or the Abeokuta woman, it’s Mr. Water or Dr. Winner, Chief Ola Balogun, Mama lyabo’s product all claiming omnipotence. On the other hand, the motivational speakers tingle our ears with mouth watering promises in our radios capitalizing on people’s greed, avarice, gullibility, poverty, joblessness, unemployment and all that to project doubtful quick-money-,making ICT-powered business ideas imbued with copious risk and uncertainties but hinged only on the key slogan of making much with little, the dream business ideals. This article does not undermined the economic importance of the overall business activities championed, perpetrated and perpetuated by Yorubas who settle in Imo State or Owerri, it is advocating a streamlined approach buttressed by moderation as the cardinal rule of life. It is a call to reasoning for Ndi -Igbo to shine eyes and stop falling mugu.

BY DAYO JOHNSONAKURE — Tongues are wagging in Arigidi Akoko in Akoko North West area of Ondo State over the chopping off of the head of a woman for alleged ritual purpose.Already, Police authorities in the state have ordered full blown investigation into the incident which is causing panic in the community.Police sources said the headless body of the deceased was found along old Ogbagi/Arigidi Akoko road at about 9pm on Saturday.

It was gathered that the deceased body, between 25 to 30 years, was discovered by a passerby who raised alarm and the Police were invited.Consequently, a team of detectives under the command of ASP Ezeala Obiora visited the scene and alleged that the corpse must have been dropped by suspected ritualists.Vanguard learnt that photographs of the body was taken after which the corpse was removed and deposited at the specialist hospital mortuary in Ikare.

Contacted, the police image maker in the state, Wole Ogodo, confirmed the incident, saying: “The Policemen at Irun Akoko division were hinted on Saturday morning that there was an headless body of a lady whose name and address are yet to be known and suspected to be between 25 to 30 years of age lying along Old Ogbagi/Arigidi Akoko road.”Ogodo said investigation is on to unveil those behind the dastardly act. -

seunfly: Exactly, i think ethnicity has help to take corruption to the highest level. It helps legitimised corruption through it's our turn mentality and it's ok if it your tribe man is corrupt, but it's bad if he/she is no.

Actually, if you look deeply at corruption in Nigeria, you will find that it has little or no stamp mark of ethnicity. All the corrupt big guys from all tribes dine and wine together. Only the poor and marginalized see ethnicity all the time. So, corruption is the major problem, followed by religion. Many times, even armed robbers and kidnappers (other forms of corruption, some how) from different ethnic groups work together, again demonstrating that corruption has no ethnic boundary.

Where ethnicity and religion feature too well is in electing or appointing capable people to run things.
