Facebook partners Airtel Africa to launch Internet.org Free Basics in Nigeria. Mark Zuckerberg, C.E.O of Facebook made this known on his facebook page.

Read on:

Today we’re partnering with Airtel Africa to launch Internet.org Free Basics in Nigeria.

There's a lot of innovation across Africa right now, and Nigeria in particular is home to a lot of talented developers.

In 2009, Olalekan Elude, Ayodeji Adewunmi and Opeyemi Awoyemi started a site called Jobberman in their dorm to help connect people looking for work with companies looking to hire. Now Jobberman is one of the top 100 websites in Nigeria, and it gets 5,000 applications every day.

Free Basics offers Nigerians, including 90 million people who are currently offline, the opportunity to access news, health information and services like Jobberman that were built by Nigerians and other developers across West Africa -- all without having to pay for data.

Free Basics is now live in more than 40 countries, and half of those are in Africa. Over the next few months, we'll be doing even more to connect developers with people who can use their apps -- and partner with local companies to bring internet to people across Africa who don't have access to mobile networks.

In the meantime, I'm excited to see what Nigerians build next!

Nairaland / General / APC Responds To Cameron Statement, Says Buhari Is Committed To Fight Corruption by Adesege(m): 10:01pm On May 10, 2016

The All Progressives Congress in UK has labeled the statement by the Prime Minister and leader of the conservatives, David Cameron as rash and has said President Buhari is Fully Committed To The Anti-Corruption War In Nigeria.

Read the statement here:

The rash statement by the Prime Minister and leader of the conservatives, David Cameron, earlier today fails to credit President Muhammadu Buhari's effort in fighting corruption.

President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR who should arrive in the UK shortly for the anti-corruption summit hosted by David Cameron has received commendation from the Prime Minister in the past and other world leaders over his stance against corruption.

During the 2015 Election campaign, PMB as he is fondly known pledged to fight corruption and he has not reneged on his promise.

It should be noted that within a year of being sworn-in, President Buhari has achieved a lot in his fight against corruption in Nigeria.

President Buhari is known for his zero tolerance against corruption. He has made major efforts to change the image of the nation within and outside the country; and this government's policies are working. In the recent list of the top 10 most corrupt countries released, Nigeria was not on the list.

Even while the Prime Minister made the comment about Nigeria being one of the "fantastically corrupt Countries”, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby quickly corrected him and acknowledged in the presence of the Queen of England that President Buhari "is actually not corrupt and he is doing a great job in Nigeria".

Nigeria and indeed the world are aware the new sheriff in town is working to tackle corruption unlike the previous government which allowed corruption to thrive.

The APC-led government has empowered the anti-corruption agency (EFCC) resulting in several high profile investigations and prosecution of individuals involved in corruption and misappropriation of funds. This is an ongoing process that includes blocking leakages, sensitising the system, re-training of stakeholders amongst other measures put in place to curb corruption. It is crystal clear to all that President Buhari is determined to root out corruption from the system.

APC UK and Nigerians in the Diaspora have confidence in the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari and believes that the current administration is moving Nigeria forward, away from the rot and decay suffered under the previous administration.

Nairaland / General / Aero Sacks 100 Contract Staff by Adesege(m): 12:05am On Apr 30, 2016
No fewer than 100 workers outsourced to Aero Contractors by Skyborne Ltd have been sacked following the airline’s decision to review its relationship with the company.

The airline confirmed the development in a statement issued on Friday by its Media Consultant, Mr Simon Tumba.

“In the course of reorganising and repositioning its business, Aero Contractors has reviewed its relationship with Skyborne by cutting down some of the services required from the company.

“This will help the company to invest more resources to enhance customer service. For the records, Aero has not sacked any of its staff.’’

However most of the affected contract workers had spent some years with the airline.

A letter to one of the affected workers which was obtained by NAN claimed that the sack was as a result of the ongoing restructuring in the airline.

The letter reads in part, “Dear colleague, in the light of the ongoing restructuring at Aero, we regret to inform you that your services are no longer required and employment with SBL terminated with immediate effect.

“Please, return all company property to your Manager/Supervisor by 8:00 a.m. on April 28. We regret any inconvenience caused.’’

Aero Contractors had been in the news in recent times as allegations of corruption and diversion of funds were levelled against the past management.

The Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON), which owns 60 per cent of the airline’s shares, had dissolved the previous management and appointed Capt. Fola Akinkuotu, as its Managing Director.

Akinkuotu, the immediate-past Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), has been given the task of rebuilding the airline and helping it to regain its position as a key player in the industry.

Nairaland / General / Vulnerable Children In Ekiti Rehabilitated By US Govt by Adesege(m): 4:11pm On Apr 29, 2016

Over the years, orphans and vulnerable children continue to bring up different emotions and especially feelings of sympathy, due to the fact that they’re aren’t always put into consideration by the government.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the number of children in this category in Nigeria are at about 17 million. It is also noted that some of the children are orphaned by the spread of HIV/AIDS, and eventually left to suffer, without care.

In Ekiti state, there are quite a number of orphaned children, who have been forced to become beggars on the streets, and can be found in all the 16 local government areas of the state.

The United States of America’s President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relied (PEPFAR), which is being anchored by Women and Children Development and Health Research Initiative (WCDHRI), has intervened at an appropriate time.

DR. Pius Idowu Ade-Ojo, who is the project coordinator explained the mission of the NGO in Ekiti, last week, at the inauguration of a training programme for the vulnerable children and their care givers. He also noted that the programme is all about orphans and vulnerable children.

“We have the paternal, maternal and the double orphan. The paternal children is one whose father is no more, the maternal is one whose mother is no more and a double orphan is one whose parents are no more. But there would be someone under whose care an orphan is, we call such a person, the care-giver. It is this person or persons that we try to empower with this programme so that he or she can in turn take care of the orphan.”

“The programme does not allow us to just dish out money to the care givers, but to give them skills acquisition trainings in form of vocations such as mechanics, hair-dressing,computer studies, knitting, soap and bead making, vulcaniser fashion designing, cabinet making and bricklaying among others, “ he said. .

According to Dr Ade-Ojo, a total number of 48 care-givers have been identified in Aramoko Ekiti and 750 vulnerable children have been marked out to benefit from the scheme.

“The main focus of our programme is to reach out to those considered seriously vulnerable, you know some could be more vulnerable than others. There are the most vulnerable, more vulnerable and vulnerable. The most vulnerable are the ones we take care of first. “The project is being funded by the United States Embassy. From our experience on this programme, we have discovered that the rate at which Nigerian children are becoming orphans is now alarming. We find out that the ones we have enrolled are actually orpahns through some very probing questions we ask them and the forms they fill,” he said.

He lamented over the lack of accurate statistical data of these children by the Nigerian government. Ade-Ojo expressed concerns about the alarming rate of children orphaned and made vulnerable by diseases such as AIDS and other terminal ailments.

Nairaland / General / Nigerian Govt Begins Preparation Of 2017 Budget by Adesege(m): 2:14pm On Apr 29, 2016
The Ministry of Budget and National Planning says it has started preparation of the 2017 budget to enhance economic development.

This is contained in a statement by Charles Dafe, Director of Information in the ministry, made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

The statement said that the Minister of State Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, disclosed this when the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) paid her a courtesy visit.

She added that the Federal Government had also started the preparation of the Medium Term 2016-2020 Development Programme to achieve sustainable development.

The ministry, however, solicited the support of ANAN to build the capacity of the staff on Zero-Based Budgeting (ZBB) application.

The minister also appealed to the association to assist the present administration to fight corruption.

“As accountants, we can resist corruption, block illegal releases; we need to start from ourselves; we must uphold the tenets of our profession and make ourselves clean and accountable always.

“Our administration came on a change mantra; we shall be transparent and accountable to all Nigerians,” she said.

Earlier, Anthony Nzom, ANAN’s president, promised to provide technical knowledge to the staff of the ministry on ZBB concept adopted in the 2016 budget.

Mr. Nzom commended the ‘’visionary appointment’’ made by President Muhammadu Buhari on two fellow members of ANAN, Zainab Ahmed as minister and Tijjani Abdullahi as Director-General of Budget Office.

He said that the nation would benefit a lot from their professional competence and services. (NAN)

Nairaland / General / Nigeria Drops Out Of Top 15 In Africa From World 3rd Fastest Growing Economy by Adesege(m): 9:10pm On Apr 26, 2016
Having enjoyed blissful growth over the past decade, Nigeria was one of the fastest growing economies in the world, but it is not one of the 15 fastest growing economies in Africa for 2016.

In 2014 and early 2015, Nigeria was named the third fastest growing economy in the world by CNNMoney, with China and Qatar, taking the lead at 7.3 percent, 7.1 percent gross domestic product (GDP) growth.

For 2016, however, the coast is cloudy, and Nigeria is nowhere near the fastest growing economies in Africa. According to the International Monetary Funds (IMF) World Economic Outlook for 2016, as revised in April, the fastest growing economy in Africa for 2016 is Cote d’Ivoire and the slowest is Chad, which is expected to record negative growth.

Cote d’Ivoire is expected to experience an 8.5 percent rise in GDP, while Nigeria’s neighbour, Chad, would see a -0.4 percent growth. Cote D’Ivoire (8.5%), Tanzania (6.9%), Senegal (6.6%), Djibouti (6.5%), Rwanda (6.3%), Kenya (6.0%), Mozambique (6.0%), Central African Republic (5.7%), Sierra Leone (5.3%) Uganda (5.3%). Madagascar, Zambia and Chad are expected to see a growth of 4.1 percent, 3.4 percent, 3.2 percent respectively.

The fastest growing economies in Africa by GDP growth rate, as projected by IMF for 2016, are: Cote D’Ivoire (8.5%), Tanzania (6.9%), Senegal (6.6%), Djibouti (6.5%), Rwanda (6.3%), Kenya (6.0%), Mozambique (6.0%), Central African Republic (5.7%), Sierra Leone (5.3%) and Uganda (5.3%). DR Congo expects a GDP growth of 4.9 percent, Cameroon; 4.9 percent, Ethiopia; 4.5 percent, Ghana; 4.5 percent and Republic of Congo; 4.4 percent.

Madagascar, Zambia and Chad are expected to see a growth of 4.1 percent, 3.4 percent, 3.2 percent respectively. Major oil exporters, Angola and Nigeria, hard hit by the slump in crude oil prices, are projected to see a growth 2.5 and 2.3 percent. At 2.3 percent, Nigeria is expected to see its poorest GDP growth since the return of Democracy in 1999.

This development has become a point of concern for the IMF, and the World Economic Forum (WEF), which would be having its meeting on Africa later in May. According to the World Economic Forum, Africa’s positive economic outlook is under pressure with the growth rate expected to remain just under 5 per cent. Foreign direct investment flows are expected to continue to grow, although at a slower pace. Rwanda has transformed dramatically since the 1994 genocide and is now placed 5th in the fastest growing African economies.

The country is one of the continent’s most competitive economies and a top reformer in improving the business environment. Ahead of the World Economic Forum on Africa in May, it is important to recognise the major challenges that many African economies face. Some of the major threats include commodities slump, currency devaluations and geo-security risks. “It is important to recognize the challenges that many African economies face – the commodities slump, currency devaluations and geo-security risks all threaten growth,” WEF explained.

The Forum says its May meeting will highlight the need for diversification in order to ensure inclusive economic growth, tapping into the fourth industrial revolution’s potential to create new industries and help reduce inequality across the continent. The World Economic Forum on Africa 2016 will take place in Kigali, Rwanda from 11-13 May

Nairaland / General / IGP Orders Arrest Of Buyers, Sellers Of Petrol In Jerry-cans by Adesege(m): 8:47pm On Apr 26, 2016
The Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, has ordered the immediate arrest of persons found selling or buying petrol and other petroleum products in plastic containers.

A statement by the police spokesperson, Olabisi Kolawole, said Mr. Arase gave the directive “to forestall the untold suffering and hazard emanating from the activities of black marketers”.

According to the statement, Mr. Arase ordered the Zonal Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, commissioners of the force across the states and that of the FCT command to arrest anybody found selling petroleum products in plastic container.

Mr. Arase issued the directive in Abuja, stressing that fuel products such as petrol, are highly flammable and can seriously endanger people, property and the environment.

“It has also rendered some innocent and law abiding citizens homeless due to fire outbreak from jerry-can petrol storage,” said Mr. Arase.

While warning pump attendants at filling stations to desist from selling petrol inside jerry-cans or any plastic container, Mr. Arase said both the buyers and sellers of the products would be arrested and prosecuted under the law.

Mr. Arase, who assured Nigerians of the police readiness to fulfil their constitutional mandate, appealed for a more cordial relationship between the police and the public.

Nairaland / General / Are Zebra Crossing Just Another Road Design In Nigeria? by Adesege(m): 6:22pm On Apr 26, 2016
A zebra crossing is a type of pedestrian crossing.

Its distinguishing feature is alternating dark and light stripes on the road surface, resembling the coat of a zebra.

A zebra crossing typically gives priority to rights of way to pedestrians but in Nigeria, zebra crossing are not respected by motorists.

It is appalling that even educated motorists pay little or no attention to pedestrians waiting to cross to the other side by a zebra crossing.

In Lagos for example, it has become an offense for pedestrians not to use a pedestrian bridge. A law should also be in place to enforce motorists to obey zebra crossing and stop for pedestrians to cross when necessary.

What do you have to say? Are zebra crossing just another road design in Nigeria?
