For over eight months, lecturers and non-academic staff at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology downed tools due to non-payment of salaries and allowances.



The staff also complained of others issues like inadequate funding of the university, jointly owned by the Osun and Oyo state governments.



In January, the owner states gave the university N500 million and the management called for a reopening of the institution. However, the lecturers, ASUU, said they would not resume.



In this exclusive interview with PREMIUM TIMES’ Olanrewaju Samuel, the chairman of ASUU at the university, Biodun Olaniran, spoke on his members’ decision.



Mr. Olaniran, a senior lecturer in Entomology / Pesticide Toxicology, also spoke on funding of the university, corruption and other issues.



PREMIUM TIMES: The current shutdown rocking LAUTECH has caused a lot of controversies, can you tell us the genesis of the whole disagreements?


ASUU CHAIR: The disagreements emanated from non-release of subventions to the university and subsequent use of internally generated revenue to offset salaries.
PREMIUM TIMES: How has LAUTECH been surviving till now? Why wait till the debt owed got to tune of N7.6 billion before acting?


ASUU CHAIR: We started our campaign against the use of IGR since May 5, 2015.


PREMIUM TIMES: How has funding of LAUTECH been over the years?


ASUU CHAIR : It is basically through the government subventions.


PREMIUM TIMES : You spoke about owner states not paying subvention, did ASUU ever call for a review of the ownership of the institution?


ASUU CHAIR: We (ASUU) never called for review of ownership.


PREMIUM TIMES : Back to the demands of ASUU which border on salaries and funding, do you think fees paid by students can sustain the almost N380 million monthly salaries?


ASUU CHAIR : Remember LAUTECH is a public university. School fees paid cannot sustain the salaries and allowances. That is why ASUU is saying IGR (internally generated revenue) cannot be alternative to government subventions.


PREMIUM TIMES : But the government has been complaining about lack of funds, saying the economy is bad. The governor even said LAUTECH needs to sustain herself. Does ASUU agree with position of Oyo State Governor on funding?


ASUU CHAIR : You mean self sustaining? No public university can be self sustaining.
PREMIUM TIMES : There have be corruption allegations against the Vice Chancellor. Don’t you think corruption is the reason for LAUTECH’s financial issues?



ASUU CHAIR: I’m not aware of such (allegations).
PREMIUM TIMES: Apart from subvention, how else do you think LAUTECH can be funded? What would your recommendations be?


ASUU CHAIR: The major funding source is the subvention from the government. The university received other funds from TetFund. It then means other sources include TetFund. and grant from international bodies.


PREMIUM TIMES: The Oyo and Osun state governments paid N500 million to offset two months salaries and we learnt that was what you (ASUU) agreed with the state governments at the meeting preceding disbursement of the fund. Why is ASUU making a u-turn?


ASUU CHAIR: There was never an agreement, because we told them that we can’t take decision on behalf of congress. That we would go back to our members for their decision.


PREMIUM TIMES: But sir, many are of the opinion that the root of all issues is the salary of ASUU and not basically funding. Some also think it may be impossible for the government to pay N7.6 billion at once. And there is the issue of letter of commitment, the state government has said she is not in position to write it, what has the Governing Council been doing ?


ASUU CHAIR: Salary was not (our primary concern). Because we started our agitation on earned academic allowances


PREMIUM TIMES : And why is letter of commitment needed after the Oyo and Osun state governments promised to fund LAUTECH?


ASUU CHAIR : We are not aware of the promise.


PREMIUM TIMES: Are you saying that the subvention would be enough to sustain LAUTECH and what is your expectation from the investigative panel report?


ASUU CHAIR : Subvention can’t be enough, but will go a long way to address other welfare issues. We expect the panel report to address our fundamental problem.


PREMIUM TIMES: Do you subscribe to an increase in students’ tuition fee, do you think it is inevitable?


ASUU CHAIR : ASUU is against commercialisation and privatisation of education. So we are against hike in tuition fee.


PREMIUM TIMES : Sir, with students already on campus, have you been invited to a round table discussion? Have you submitted your ideas on how revenue can be generated to the panel and are you saying your demand is not that the Government should pay $7.6 billion at once but rather give a roadmap on how the money will be paid?


ASUU CHAIR: We are asking for a workable payment plan of the amount owed because we understand the economic reality.


PREMIUM TIMES: Are you saying that no resumption until the payment plans are received? Have there been efforts to reach out to you from the university management including the Governing Council? Is the stalemate looking like over or it is not looking bright?


ASUU CHAIR : Yes, (no resumption) until we receive the plan.



PREMIUM TIMES : Don’t you think there are fundamental issues that have affected LAUTECH beyond funding? Do you think ownership should be reviewed?



ASUU CHAIR : Our union is not involved or joined in the issue of ownership.


PREMIUM TIMES : So you maintain a neutral position?


ASUU CHAIR:: Yes because we are just employees.


PREMIUM TIMES : What is the way out of the current issue if the government says she cannot issue letter of commitment as only the management can? What is the fastest way out of the crisis?


ASUU CHAIR: To sit down together and agree on the way forward.


PREMIUM TIMES: So you are calling for dialogue from the government or university management.


ASUU CHAIR: All strata of governance.
PREMIUM TIMES: Finally, how soon should we expect LAUTECH to resume?




ASUU CHAIR: LAUTECH has resumed. Just that ASUU is still on strike.



PREMIUM TIMES: Finally, what are your words to the owner states and the university management?



ASUU CHAIR: Let each organ of governance do what is expected of such organ.

The benefits and privileges of being a
Christian are, principally, union with Christ

,
1.Adoption by God into His family,

2. Christian liberty,

3. a spiritual right to the sacraments of the new covenant,

4. the fellowship of all Christians,
and

5. the resurrection of the
body.



1. UNION WITH CHRIST.
The purpose of all that Christ did was that
Christians might be united with Him and
live together with Him (1 Thessalonians
5:10):


They were crucified with Him (Romans
6:6);


They were buried with Him (Romans 6:4;
Colossians 2:12);


They died with Him (Romans 6:8; 2
Timothy 2:11);


They were made alive with Him (Colossians
2:13);


They were raised with Him (Colossians
2:12; 3:1);


They are made co-heirs with Him (Romans
8:17);


They are to suffer with Christ (Romans
8:17);


They are to share in His glory (Romans
8:17);


They will reign with Him (2 Timothy 2:12;
Revelation 20:4).


The union is like that of a Head and a Body:

2. ADOPTION BY GOD INTO HIS FAMILY.

Before the creation of the world God chose
Christians in Christ to become His holy and
blameless children, to live within His
constant care (Ephesians 1:4, 5).


God's love has caused Him to bestow upon
those who receive His Son the right to
become His children (John 1:12, 13; 1 John
3:1).


Christians receive the Spirit of adoption, so
that they are rightly able to cry, 'Abba,
Father!' (Romans 8:15-17).


As God's children, Christians share His
treasures, and all that God gives to His Son
belongs to them as well (Romans 8:17).


Christians wait for the redemption of their
bodies that will mean that at last they have
entered into their full rights as God's
children in Christ (Romans 8:23).


The whole creation may be described as
waiting in eager expectation to see the
wonderful sight of the children of God
coming into their own (Romans 8:19).
CHRISTIAN LIBERTY.


Christ came to proclaim freedom for
captives, and release from darkness for
prisoners (Isaiah 61:1, 2; Luke 4:18, 19).
When Christ sets us free, we are free
indeed (John 8:32, 34, 36; Galations 5:1).
Christ sets us free from the fear of death (1
Corinthians 15:55-57; Hebrews 2:14, 15).
Christ delivers us from that slavish attitude
of fear that so easily can characterize life
without God (Romans 8:15).


Christ has redeemed believers from the
curse of the law's condemnation, by
Himself becoming a curse for them when
He was crucified (Galations 3:13): no
condemnation now hangs over the head of
those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1).


The burden of all the Jewish ceremonial is
removed through Christ (Acts 15:10, 11;
Galations 5:1).


Christ makes us free from slavery to sin
(John 8:32, 34, 36). Though Christians once
used to be slaves to sin, having now
wholeheartedly obeyed the form of
teaching to which they were entrusted,
they have been set free from the service of
sin, and have become the servants of
righteousness (Romans 6:17, 18).


Christians' freedom, however, is not a
freedom to do evil, but a freedom to serve
God (1 Peter 2:16).


Christians are freed from the bondage of
the law, but it remains a rule for them of
life and holiness: God puts His law within
Christians and writes it upon their hearts
(Jeremiah 31:31-34).


3. A SPIRITUAL RIGHT TO THE SACRAMENTS OF
THE NEW COVENANT.


The first sacrament of the New Covenant is
baptism:

It was appointed by Christ Himself for all
disciples (Matthew 28:19, 20; Mark 16:15,
16);


It is administered in the name of the Trinity
(Matthew 28:19);

It is a symbol of an individual's reception
of the gospel (Acts 2:37, 38, 41; 8:12;
16:14, 15);

It symbolizes repentance and faith in the
Lord Jesus (Acts 2:38);
It symbolizes confession of Christ's
Lordship (Acts 19:5);


It symbolizes admittance into God's family
(Acts 2:38, 41, 47; 8:12; 9:18; 1 Corinthians
12:13);

It symbolizes entry into all the benefits of
Christ's death and resurrection (Romans
6:3, 4).

The second sacrament of the New
Covenant is the Lord's Supper:

The Lord's Supper is a proclamation of the
Lord's death by words and symbols (1
Corinthians 11:26);

It was established and commanded by
Christ (Matthew 26:26-29; 1 Corinthians
11:23);


It continually reminds Christians of Christ's
sacrifice for them (Luke 22:19, 20; 1
Corinthians 11:23-26);

By means of it Christians acknowledge
their sharing in the benefits of Christ's
death (1 Corinthians 10:16, 17; 11:23- 26);
In it Christians have fellowship with Christ
and with one another (1 Corinthians 10:16,
17, 21);


In it Christians make their thanksgiving to
God (1 Corinthians 10:16; Romans 12:1);
The Lord's Supper is to be continued until
Christ returns (1 Corinthians 11:26).


4. THE FELLOWSHIP OF ALL CHRISTIANS.

God gives His people singleness of heart
and action (Jeremiah 32:39).


The people of God are one as the Father
and the Son are one (John 17:22) - and
Jesus' prayer to His Father had this unity as
a main petition (John 17:11, 21).


Jesus, the Great and Chief Shepherd, has
one flock to which all Christians belong
(John 10:16).


The fellowship of believers - sometimes
called 'the communion of saints' - arises
from Christians belonging to one Body, of
which there is one Spirit (Ephesians 4:4).
All Christians are baptized by the Spirit into
one Body, whether Jews, Gentiles, slaves or
free, and they all have experience of the
same Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:13).


Though many, Christians form one body in
Christ, and each member belongs to all the
others (Romans 12:5; 1 Corinthians 12:12).


The fellowship or communion of believers,
therefore, is the sense of identity and
belonging we have with all Christians
through our common allegiance to the
Lord Jesus, the truth (Ephesians 4:13; 2
John 1).


The fellowship Christians have together
arises from their fellowship with the Father
and the Son (1 John 1:3).


Christians should seek to express their
fellowship and union outwardly by
avoiding all dissensions among themselves,
being perfectly united in mind and thought
(1 Corinthians 1:10, 11; Philippians 2:1, 2; 1
Peter 3:.


This fellowship of all Christians is given
practical expression in the fellowship of
the local church according to the pattern
revealed in the New Testament (Acts 11:26;


14:23; 20:17, 28; 1 Corinthians 4:17;
Hebrews 10:25; 13:17).


5. THE RESURRECTION OF THE BODY.

God does not abandon believers to the
grave, but He has made known to them the
path of life, which leads to joy in His
presence, and eternal pleasures at His right
hand (Psalms 16:9-11).


Believers have the assurance of the
resurrection of the body through their
risen Redeemer (Job 19:25-27; 1
Thessalonians 4:14).


The resurrection of the dead will be the
first consequence of Christ's second
coming (1 Thessalonians 4:16).
Believers will be made alive through Christ
(1 Corinthians 15:22).


Harvest provides a good illustration of the
kind of thing that will happen. What we
sow is not the body that is to be but only a
seed (1 Corinthians 15:37); just as to every
kind of creature and thing God has given a
particular body, so He has determined the
particular nature of the resurrection body
(1 Corinthians 15:38-44).


The body characterized by decay,
dishonour, weakness, and suited only for
this present life, will be raised an
imperishable, glorious body, full of power,
and perfectly fitted for life in the world to
come (1 Corinthians 15:42-44).


The transformation will take place in a
flash, in the twinkling of an eye (1
Corinthians 15:51, 52).


The assurance of the resurrection of the
body is a tremendous comfort and

encouragement to the Christian (1
Corinthians 15:58; 1 Thessalonians 4:18).
And after the glorious event, Christians will
be with Christ forever (1 Thessalonians
4:17).the

gestures followed in every religion
when praying, people pray with their

Let us try to understand in this way:
We humans have five sense organs.

1. Skin- touch sensation

2. Tongue- taste

3. Nose- odor

4. Ears- hearing

5. Eyes- visual

When we pray to god, we naturally
choose a place which makes us
comfortable. So the three organs i.e.
skin, tongue and nose has no work to
do now.

But the other two organs (eyes
and ears) are the remained ones that
can distract us by not letting us to
concentrate. But we usually choose a
place where we can not hear noise or
we hear pleasing and soothing music
which helps us to concentrate.

.Now remained is "eye". Among all the
five sense organs the eyes are the most
distracting organs. It sees every other
things irrespective of good or bad,
which could distract our mind and
peace.

.We see so many things. Though we
don't want to remember, the visual has
great impact. The brain registers
whatever the eye sees. So, while
praying to god we close our eyes so
that any external happenings like
people moving, birds flying etc... may
not distract and we can concentrate on
our prayers to god.

Tanzania’s government has suspended mining at a site in Geita town in the north-western region, where 15 artisan miners were rescued yesterday after being trapped underground for three days, to assess the safety of mines. Fourteen Tanzanians and one Chinese were rescued from the Chinese-owned gold mine, called RZ Gold mine.


BBC Swahili reporter Halima Nyanza, who witnessed the rescue mission yesterday, said the mood at the scene was both emotional and jubilant as relatives watched the miners being brought up.

An investigation to determine what what caused the accident is under way but this is not an isolated incident.


In November , Tanzania hailed the “miraculous” rescue of five miners who were trapped underground for more than 40 days.


The majority of the miners are from surrounding villages and sometimes include children.
