20-year- old Joan Egemba who was to sit for the 2016 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination in National Open University of Nigeria centre in Awa Ijebu, where she was posted to sit for the exam has been strangle to death by hoodlums suspected to be rapists.


we learnt that the 20-year-old Joan Egemba was stabbed and strangled by some suspected rapists in the Ijebu Igbo area of Ogun State.

Joan, who bagged a National Diploma in Accountancy from the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Ogun State, enrolled for the 2016 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

Our corespondent learnt that the deceased left her home in the Odo Eran, Sango-Ota area around 12pm on Thursday, March 3, for the National Open University of Nigeria centre in Awa Ijebu, where she was posted to sit for the exam the following day.

It was learnt that on Thursday evening, she was abducted at the Ijebu Oru Junction – a few distance away from the centre – by
persons suspected to be rapists. Her corpse was said to be found in a bush at the back of a secondary school in Ijebu Igbo with cuts in her thighs.


Our correspondent was told that the briefs that Egemba wore were torn, suggesting that her assailants were rapists.
Her father, Emmanuel Egemba, said she had called him on the telephone on getting to the centre, informing him that the security guard attached to the centre turned down her request to pass the night on the premises. He said, “On that Thursday, she left home around 12.30pm, but the bus she boarded at Sango to the centre left around 2pm. She called at 5.30pm that she had arrived there, but the security man at the centre did not open the gate for her and others to pass the night on the premises. I told her to find a place in the area till the following day when she would sit for the exam.



“Around 7pm, I called her again and she said the security man had opened the gate for them. One hour after, I called again but she did not pick her calls. She was supposed to sit for the exam at 6.30am on Friday. I called her around 12pm on Friday, her phone was switched off. As early as 4am on Saturday, I went to the centre to verify whether she sat for the exam or not. I met the security man and he directed me to the JAMB office in Abeokuta. He denied that he allowed my daughter into the school compound to pass the night.



“It was a woman that told us that a girl was kidnapped at Oru Junction and taken towards Ijebu Igbo. We later discovered her corpse on Wednesday, March 9. If the candidates were allowed to sleep inside the school, this incident would not have happened.” Emmanuel, a retired Assistant Superintendent of Nigerian Customs, said the loss of his daughter was hard to bear, but the family had taken solace in God.



“I learnt it was rapists that killed her. Her body was not mutilated, but she had cuts in the mouth and thighs. Her clothes and briefs were torn and she had bruises in the back. “We prayed before she left home on that day. While we were praying this morning (Monday) I looked at where she used to sit and it was vacant,” he said.

>The Management of Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, has suspended twenty-five students of the institution for various cases of examination misconduct.
This was made known in a statement released by the university on Saturday.



The suspension followed the recommendation of the Students Disciplinary Committee that investigated the examination malpractice cases for the 2015/2016 Academic Session.
According to the statement, the students were suspended for failing to appear before the Examination Misconduct Panels set up by the University to consider cases of examination misconducts allegations leveled against them.

The statement added that the suspension is with immediate effect.

The University of Lagos has been thrown into mourning following the mysterious death of a 300 level student in the Department of Microbiology, Eniola Jacobs.

it was gathered that the decease died after reportedly taking a portion of the insecticide, “Sniper”. According to a source who was a coursemate of his, Jacobs drank the insecticide on Saturday afternoon, and was rushed to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) soon after, where he was said to be responding to treatment until Sunday afternoon when he gave up the ghost. Other sources, however, claimed that Jacobs was “forced” to take the deadly liquid by cultists who wanted him dead, for unknown reasons.


Attempts made on Sunday afternoon to reach the University spokesman, Mr Toyin Adebule, were unsuccessful, as his phones were switched off. However, his deputy, Mrs Nonye Oguama, told Lagos Metro that she was yet to be informed about the matter.

discredited the reports that medical students in
Nigerian universities would henceforth study for 11
years before obtaining an MBBS degree.
This was disclosed by the NUC Executive
Secretary, Prof. Julius Okojie, in Abuja,

Academic Standard (BMAS) for Medicine and
Dentistry, which had since been made public by
commission, only provides for a seven-year
training, leading to the award of MBBS/MDS.

Medical Science with interest in either Anatomy/
Physiology/Biochemistry."

Unknown number of female students of the Obafemi Awolowo University’s pre-degree program got injured as the new Bva hostel collapsed.


The heavy downpour in Osun State on Wednesday , did not drop well on the pre-degree foundation students of the OAU, as many of them were hospitalized, while others were made to sleep in the cold lecture theater.



Osun State, especially Ife North, where region the OAU pre-degree campus is located witnessed an heavy downpour, which started at about 6:15pm on 16th February 2016.


Halimat, who spoke with me said that the heavy rain and the ravaging wind took away roof of their hostel and made them sleep in the cold.


“The rain alongside the heavy wind took away our roof and made us sleep wet in one of our lecture theatre” She added that many of her colleagues were rushed to the health center for treatment, after sustaining different grades of injuries . “Some of us have been taking to the pre- degree clinic, after the ceiling fell on them, while some got cut by the pan ” she said. Meanwhile, the OAU Pre-degree management have declared a two week break for the students, to allow for the reconstruction of the collapsed hostel.

The Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB) went a step higher in 2013 with the Computer Based Test (CBT). For most of us, this was a necessary and timely innovation on their part. Most Nigerians are either giving a bow or a round of applause to the JAMB team.


THEN In the 90’s, when students sat for JAMB, it was a whole different ball game from now. The examination was kept on a pedestal of FEAR for most students. As opposed to recent times, most people wrote JAMB a minimum of twice, before they could ever think of gaining admissions. As a result, exam malpractice became a common denominator in the JAMB examinations. It seemed that no matter the angle approached to tackle this scourge, it just would not go away. Parents were a major part of the growth and immortality of exam malpractice at this time.


For a good number of students also, there was a feeling that their papers were not being handled fairly. There was a belief that the results were “given” by those who marked instead of really being what they “got” in the examination. There was also the issue of not finding your result when the results were released, or, exam centre results being ceased. This caused problems for even the innocent ones in those centres. The step that JAMB took in 2013 has really changed everything. When we heard about this new decision, there was a mix of both anticipation and skepticism (good and bad): Can this really work? Finally, JAMB will be free and fair! Hmm, will Nigerians not find a way around it? Will my children be able to pass their exam now? Can we still cheat?






NOW There is a renewed confidence in the students writing the exams. The confidence stems from the belief that, machines are better than people. The knowledge that at least two days later you have your result is also a great motivation and sense of relief to students now. It now encourages young people to read as opposed to waiting to “sort” (give bribes or pay mercenaries). On account of the CBT, the students need a general knowledge of basic computer skills, which in turn, adds value to each student in the long run.

New things are not always easy to accept, but all parents and guardians should embrace and wholeheartedly support this move, knowing that your children and wards would be better off in the long run.

On a lighter note: I wish I was writing JAMB now.






Question: In the early 2000’s universities started conducting their own tests after students passed JAMB and “gained admission” into their institutions. For most of us, the reasons seemed obvious with the plague of malpractice at the time. Now that there is the CBT is there still a need for that post UTME? Can’t the universities work with JAMB to settle the needs they believe JAMB was not meeting (if any)?

An accident along Lagos-Ibadan expressway was blamed on the driver was going against traffic



– The accident caused heavy traffic on the expressway


A fatal accident occurred near Four Square camp in Ajebo, Lagos-Ibadan expressway leading to the death of passengers.


According to eyewitness reports, the unfortunate incidence was caused by the driver of the commercial vehicle who was driving against traffic perhaps to avoid the traffic on his own lane. The driver was reportedly slammed head-long into a trailer on the expressway.



Some of the passenger died on the spot while others were seriously injured. Security and emergency personnel were at the scene of the accident to tend to the causalities. The accident led to heavy traffic gridlock in the area.



This accident is coming barely a week after an accident that cost the life of the minister of state for labour and productivity, Barrister James Ocholi . The minister alongside his wife and son died in the accident which was blamed on overspeeding. It was also revealed by the Federal road Safety Corps that the driver had no license.

Scores of candidates who participated in the 2016 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and their parents on Tuesday stormed the Lagos State Governor’s Office in Alausa, Ikeja, and the state Assembly complex to protest against alleged manipulation of the 2016 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

It wàs gathered that the aggrieved protesters demanded the cancellation of the exams and the removal of the Registrar of the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde.
The protesters, who faulted the conduct of the examination, described the exercise as a “big sham.”

The examination, conducted by JAMB, they alleged, was fraught with irregularities. The examination, which started on February 27, will end on March 19.

A candidate, Maryam Animashaun, who expressed disappointment with the conduct of the examination, claimed that she received three different results from JAMB.
Animashaun, who sat for the examination at the College of Education, Oro, Kwara State, said, “I am confused. I do not know what to do now. The first alert I received on the telephone from the board with regard to the examination showed that I scored 218. The second alert read 186, while the third one read 286.
“The surprising thing now is that I cannot print any of the results. On the website, the board claimed that I did not sit for the examination. Meanwhile, I sat for English, Government, Economics and Literature-in-English.” Another candidate, Kalasuwe Adeola, who claimed she scored 220, said she obtained the same score in 2015.

She said, “I am sure JAMB did not mark this year’s UTME. If it did, why did they issue me the same result I obtained last year? In my printed result for this year, it was written 2015/2016 instead of 2016/2017. I sat for this year’s examination at the Bachel Model College, Lagos, on March 9. Unlike other candidates, I did not have any issue with my system during the examination.” The National President of the Association of Tutorial Schools in Nigeria, Mr. Shodunke Olutodotun, lamented that over 10,000 candidates missed the UTME, while others had their marks deducted due to irregularities by JAMB. “This year’s UTME will soon be concluded. We have a man called Prof. Dibu Ojerinde. This man has outlived his usefulness in JAMB. He seems to be more powerful than the country’s president. “The protesters are the victims; their destinies are being finished by Dibu. Most of the protesters that had their exam in Delta State had the exam in a shrine. A lot of them got results before they sat for the exam.

“We are appealing to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and the Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, to send signal to Abuja to stop UTME. If they don’t do that, we will go to Abuja. “How will someone sit for Physics, Chemistry, Biology and the next thing he sees are Economics, Commerce and Government?” Describing the exam as a fraud, a parent, Mr. Bunmi Elujula, urged the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, to look into the complaints of the candidates urgently. Apart from awarding arbitrary scores to candidates, Elujula said many candidates had problems with their systems.

>The ongoing Computer Based Test (CBT) organised by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has been generating a lot of controversy over the inability of some candidates to see their result almost days after writing the test.

However, a JAMB official in Lagos, Mrs. Ebere Okeke, have allayed the fear over the results by saying that all candidates CBT result will duly be released except in instances were it was the candidates fault or mistake during the exam.

The JAMB supervisor attributed the delay in releasing some candidates result to the delay in processing of the result or network problem, urging the CBT candidates to keep checking the internet for their results.

She also said the CBT result delay might be caused by individual negligence and candidates who did not carefully fill their numbers during registration. "Some candidates have either misplaced their numbers or changed them; as such, the computer could not deliver the result after the examination.

"The UTME test computer starts marking the exam of a candidate immediately the candidate starts writing the exams and will deliver the result online in 48hrs time.

"This is not to say that the CBT doesn't have its faults, but it will get better as time goes on", she said.

This has never happened since the inception of JAMB. You have succeeded in exhibiting &selling your administrative incompetence before Nigerians, Africa & the globe in general. The school authority should be held responsible for not properly providing adequate measures in securing there pupils after school hours while waiting for there parents. The Vice Chancellor, Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu, Prof. Christian Anieke, has said that government could not continue to finance education, if the best must be achieved in the sector. Speaking during their 7th pre-matriculation media briefing, Anieke said that wholesome education was capital-intensive and government lacked the needed resources to grow the sector to attain enviable heights. He said that it would be difficult for government to provide all the funds needed for research purposes, adding that scholars and other stakeholders needed grants from donor agencies. “This is one thing that is lacking in Nigeria. We depend on government to finance education but the government has no money to do that,” he said. Anieke said that the institution understood the challenges in the sector and the need to encourage the academic staff to improve upon their intellectual capacity. “Our university insists that, as a scholar, you must be writing grants. Government has no money to fund researches. “You can get up to N100 million to do your research work and universities are rated based on the number of scholars who get grants for their different researches,” he said. He said that the country would be a very difficult setting for academic activities if the right things were not done. “But we at Godfrey Okoye University have come a long way and many friends have supported us,” he said.

4 year old Ojelabi Micheal Oluwatomiyin pictured above was kidnapped by a yet to be identified woman at his school, Mafina Primary School, Unity Estate along Iba expressway in Lagos on January 20th. A relative of the kidnapped boy said according to Ojelabi’s 8 year old sister, herself and her little brother were in their school waiting for their mother to come pick them up. When they got tired of waiting, they stepped out of their school compound where they met the kidnapper who told her their mother asked her to come and pick them up. The young girl refused saying she does not know her… The kidnapper then forcefully grabbed her younger brother from her and ran away. No word has been heard from the kidnapper since yesterday.
