It was not all bad though as Mikel/Michael preferred his new moniker and stuck with it before joining Chelsea in 2006.

Now Michael, born John Michael Nchekwube Obinna, has officially changed his name to 'Mikel John Obi', according to the Standard.

The midfielder's name was incorrectly spelt by the Nigeria Football Federation in 2003 and he decided to keep it but has now officially changed his name from Michael to Mikel

Nairaland GeneralEgyptian Student May Be Deported After Trump Threat by adolphusberit(op): 4:07pm On Mar 03, 2016
A flight student from Egypt is facing deportation from the United States after being investigated by federal agents for posting on his Facebook page that he was willing to kill Donald Trump and the world would thank him.

While U.S. prosecutors have not charged 23-year-old Emadeldin Elsayed with a crime, immigration authorities arrested him last month at the Los Angeles-area flight school he attended and now are trying to deport him, attorney Hani Bushra said Wednesday.

Elsayed, who is being held in a jail in Orange, California, is devastated at seeing his dreams of becoming a pilot dashed over what Bushra acknowledged was a foolish social media post. An immigration court hearing will determine whether Elsayed will be deported.

"It seems like the government was not able to get a criminal charge to stick on him, so they used the immigration process to have him leave the country," Bushra said. "The rhetoric is particularly high in this election, and I just feel he got caught up in the middle."

Trump is leading the Republican presidential contenders and has used especially tough talk on immigration to win over many voters. He has vowed to build a wall along the entire Mexican border and has called for temporarily banning Muslims from entering the country.

U.S. Secret Service agents interviewed Elsayed in early February after he posted a photo of Trump on Facebook and wrote he was willing to serve a life sentence for killing the billionaire and the world would thank him, Bushra said. The agents returned eight days later and told him federal prosecutors had declined to charge him but said his visa to attend flight school had been revoked. He was arrested by immigration authorities.

Elsayed said he wrote the message because he was angered by Trump's comments about Muslims. He said he immediately regretted it, and he never intended to harm anyone. "It's just a stupid post. You can find thousands of these every hour on Facebook and the media," he told The Associated Press in a phone interview from jail. "I don't know why would they think I am a threat to the national security of the United States just because of a stupid post."

Elsayed said the agent who interviewed him mentioned last year's shooting rampage by a Muslim husband-and-wife couple in San Bernardino and the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, which were carried out by Muslims who had sought flight training in the United States.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement said in a statement that Elsayed was arrested because he violated "the terms of his admission to the United States." The agency did not provide further details. The State Department and Secret Service declined to discuss the case. A Trump campaign spokeswoman also declined to comment.

Elsayed is from Cairo, but he said he spent much of his life in Saudi Arabia, where his father worked as a civil engineer. He came to the United States for the first time last September to attend Universal Air Academy with the hope of returning to Egypt and getting a job at an airline, he said.

He said he'd like to continue his studies in the United States if the government lets him stay. If not, he will seek a refund of some of the $65,000 he has spent on his education and use it to study elsewhere.

Alex Khatib, owner of Universal Air Academy, said he knows little about the case except that federal agents showed up at his school to interview and later detain Elsayed. Officials asked him to terminate paperwork he had issued so Elsayed could study for his pilot's license, he said.

Khatib said he would take him back if the government allows. "He is honestly a good student," Khatib said. "He seemed to be a good guy.

SportsChelsea 'extremely Disappointed' By Diego Costa's Three-match Ban by adolphusberit(op): 10:38pm On Sep 22, 2015
The Blues made known their feelings over the Football Association's decision to ban their striker for three games, but will wait for the written reasons before commenting further

Chelsea say they are "extremely disappointed" with the Football Association's decision to ban striker Deigo Costa for three matches on Tuesday.

Costa was suspended for his actions during the Blues' 2-0 victory over Arsenal on Saturday, in which he clashed with Laurent Koscielny and Gabriel.

A statement on the club's website reads: "We are extremely disappointed with the FA Regulatory Commission's decision to suspend Diego Costa. We will await their written reasons before commenting further."

Blues boss Jose Mourinho had lauded his striker's behaviour after the match, insisting he did nothing wrong and that he did not deserve to be red carded, as Gunners manager Arsene Wenger had suggested.

"If you want to speak about Diego Costa with me, he played like he has to play," he said.

"That's why you have full stadiums and the game watched around the world by millions and millions. The game has to be played like that.

"That is why tomorrow I will go to see what I consider comparable in terms of dedication and passion, New Zealand and Argentina [in the Rugby World Cup] - I go tomorrow because I love it. Fantastic, Diego.

"Costa was man-of-the-match for me. Of course [it was not a red card for Costa]."

The FA had earlier rescinded Gabriel's own three-match punishment after he was sent off during the game for kicking out at Costa.

The Gunners appealed against the would-be violent conduct ban on the grounds of wrongful dismissal, and were deemed successful.

However, the Brazilian centre-back still faces an improper conduct charge and has until Thursday evening to respond.
Nairaland GeneralChelsea Pair Omitted From Nigeria Squad by adolphusberit(op): 8:29am On Aug 18, 2015
The two Blues players, who have found themselves on the fringes of Jose Mourinho's starting XI in recent months, have both been left out of Sunday Oliseh's selection

Chelsea duo John Obi Mikel and Victor Moses have been omitted from Sunday Oliseh's first squad as Nigeria coach, as they prepare for an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Tanzania.

Oliseh, appointed in July, has named an 18-man squad for the clash on September 4 but the two Blues men, who have played just nine minutes of competitive football thus far in 2015-16, have been left out.

The Nigerian Football Federation alluded to the decision in the statement accompanying their announcement of the squad.

"There are a number of surprises, in line with Oliseh's earlier pledge to make current form and first -level football key indices for selection to the Super Eagles," the NFF statement read.

"There are goalkeeper Carl Ikeme, midfielder Izunna Ernest Uzochukwu and forwards Emem Eduok, Sylvester Igboun and Moses Simon."

Moses has 24 caps for Nigeria, while Mikel has 64.

SportsMove Over, Van Gaal! Mourinho Launches Into 'fictional' Story In Awards Speech by adolphusberit(op): 7:24am On May 27, 2015
The manager has given his review of the season at the club's end-of-season gala and says the newly crowned Premier League champions have not been given the credit they deserve

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has followed in the footsteps of Louis van Gaal by delivering an entertaining speech at the club’s end-of-season awards.

The Manchester United manager hit the headlines after closing his club’s awards ceremony with an impassioned review of the Red Devils’ season.

Mourinho has now delivered his own review, accompanied by graphics, which poked fun at rivals Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal.

"My players did not get the respect they deserved from day one to the last day," he said. "These are words that I really feel but now I have a fiction story and let's try to enjoy it.

"This is a game with two goals, but there is one team [with red shirts] that like to play without the ball.

"That team plays really well and the ball goes and goes and goes and the quality of the ball possession is good, but they don't score. No points.

"They asked the Fifa committee if they can win like this but they're told it's not possible. That the bigger possession is not essential to win matches and they are not champions.

"Then, there is another team [wearing sky blue shirts]. Only with one goal. And they score a lot of goals, from players in every position, and they score and they score and they score.

"But they never concede a goal because there's no goal. They speak to Fifa and they say they can't be champions because there is only one goal.

"There is a third team [with red shirts and white sleeves], and the third team wants to play with two goals.

"They were scoring some, they were also conceding some. But they score really beautiful goals and then the bus comes along and they couldn't do it.

"Finally there is a team [with blue shirts]. They wanted to play with the normal rules and they know that in matches they have to score one more goal than the opponent.

"How can you do this? By scoring lots of goals, by not conceding and scoring one.

"That was the option and lots of goals were conceding, they played from August till May and sometimes they brought the bus."

SportsBREAKING NEWS: Real Madrid Sack Ancelotti by adolphusberit(op): 8:42pm On May 25, 2015
The Italian coach, who guided the club to their 10th Champions League crown last season, has paid the price for a poor second half of the season

Real Madrid have announced they have sacked Carlo Ancelotti as head coach.

The Italian coach has been widely expected to leave the Santiago Bernabeu this summer after a disappointing end to the 2014-15 season, which saw Madrid lose out to Barcelona in the Liga title race and exit the Champions League at the semi-final stage at the hands of Juventus.

The reigning European champions have now confirmed they have parted ways with the man who delivered La Decima to the club.

Madrid president Florentino Perez said: "I want to tell you that we have decided to relieve Carlo Ancelotti of his duties as Real Madrid coach. It’s been a very difficult decision for the board but as I always say, we haven’t come here to take the easy decisions but the best decisions for the institution.
"Carlo Ancelotti in these two years, has won the affection of the board and my personal affection and that of the fans. Carlo is part of our history. But as we all know, in Madrid the demands are great. We think it’s time for a new impulse which can allow us to win new titles and achieve our maximal level of competitiveness.

"With our great team, talent and hard work we can give satisfaction and success to our fans. I want to thank Carlo for his hard work in the last two years and tell him this is still is house and home. Next week we will know the name of the new coach of Real Madrid.

When asked about the possible candidates for the job, Perez added: "It would be good if the new manager spoke Spanish."

Ancelotti delivered four trophies at Madrid in a remarkable 2014, as the Blancos won the Copa del Rey, Champions League, European Super Cup and Club World Cup.

The former Paris Saint-Germain boss has been linked with a return to AC Milan, where he won Serie A and two Champions League titles, with Rossoneri CEO Adriano Galliani heading to the Spanish capital to meet with Ancelotti. Rumours in England also linked West Ham with a shock approach for the former midfielder.

However, the 55-year-old confirmed after Madrid's 7-3 thrashing of Getafe that he intends to take a year's sabbatical from the game in order to undergo surgery on a nervous complaint.

Napoli boss Rafa Benitez is the favourite to succeed Ancelotti at Santiago Bernabeu.

SportsAdebayor: I Considered Suicide by adolphusberit(op): 6:19pm On May 20, 2015
Emmanuel Adebayor has revealed he contemplated suicide over a family feud which culminated one of his brothers holding a knife to his throat.

Adebayor has published a third lengthy post on his Facebook account in order, he says, to respond to claims made by some of his siblings through their own social media channels.

The Tottenham striker says arguments with his brothers Kola and Peter, who died in July 2012, got so bad they drove him to consider taking his own life.

Adebayor wrote: "Many times I wanted to give up. Ask my sister Iyabo Adebayor how many times I have called and was ready to commit suicide

"I kept these stories for years. But if I die, no-one would know my story, no-one would learn from it. Some people say I should keep these stories private, but someone has to sacrifice himself, someone has to talk about it."

Adebayor published the first of three Facebook posts earlier this month in which he claimed another brother, Rotimi, had stolen mobile phones belonging to team-mates at a leading French football academy.

In his latest 1,649-word post he alleged he was threatened with a knife after refusing to provide Kola with a "huge amount" of money in order to establish a car business.

Adebayor, who was then at Monaco, wrote: "I was very tired and decided to go take a nap. I woke and a knife was held to my throat.

"As I opened my eyes, both of my brothers (Kola and Peter) were there. They were shouting and they claimed that I was wasting their time.

"Peter was going mad and Kola was supporting. I asked them, 'Is this the only way to solve this issue? If yes, then kill me and take the money'. It's only at that moment that he put the knife down."

The Manchester United striker has amassed a wealth of £72 million, according to the Telegraph, and thus sits only behind the Formula One world champion in terms of the wealthiest British sports stars, with Hamilton worth £88m.

The list, released on Saturday, features six other football figures, with QPR defender Rio Ferdinand fifth on the list, with a personal fortune of £44m.

Steven Gerrard and Jose Mourinho also feature, with riches of £42m and £40m respectively, while Manchester City midfielder Frank Lampard’s wealth of £39m earns him a spot on the rankings.

Ryan Giggs and Arsene Wenger round off the football-related rankings, with the two both boasting a wealth of £38m.

Golfers Rory McIlroy and Sir Nick Faldo, basketball player Luol Deng, tennis star Andy Murray and Hamilton’s F1 rival Jenson Button round off the list.

President Goodluck Jonathan and wife, Patience Jonathan was not been accredited by the Independent National Electoral Commission’s  voter cards.

Three voter cards had failed to read the President’s biometrics and accredit him for voting at the Otazi playground polling centre in his home town, Otueke, Bayelsa State.

Jonathan had come to the polling unit at 9:20 a.m and one hour later was yet to be accredited by three different card readers which failed to capture he and his wife’s biometrics.

A sweating Jonathan said that he wasn’t worried about the malfunction and described it as a little delay.

“President Jonathan is just one person, so if we have problem with one person, as far as the elections is going on well nationally,” he said. “I’m not worried, there might be a delay, my interest s that we conduct a credible election.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)The Chelsea Boss Revealed He Believes The TV Criticism Of His Players' Conduct ! by adolphusberit(op): 6:16pm On Mar 13, 2015
Jose Mourinho has launched a scathing attack on Sky Sports pundits Jamie Carragher and Graeme Souness following their comments after Chelsea's Champions League exit at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain .

Carragher labelled the behaviour of Chelsea's players 'disgraceful' after they surrounded referee Bjorn Kuipers prior to Zlatan Ibrahimovic's red card in the first half, while Souness condemned the conduct as "pathetic" and "not the British way”.

Speaking at his press conference on Friday, Mourinho said: "I’m not like you. I’m not like people in your area - the nature of your job is you go with the wind, the wind blows to that side you go to that side, the wind blows to the other side you go to the other side.

"I’m not like that with my players. I like my players and I trust my players when I win and when I lose. I can’t be like the wind, so I support my players. We win together and we lose together.

"You know, the world is a bit strange, maybe because of diet and the quality of the products we are eating, because memories are getting shorter. When Jamie Carragher and Graeme Souness speak about it, it’s because they’re having a problem.

"The game finished, I was in the tunnel and one-by-one - not just the players, the coaches, everyone - I shook their hands, told them they deserved [to win], good luck for the future. This is the way we behave after a defeat.

"This is the way I am and the way I work. I’m not like people want me to be, the way people sometimes like to describe me. Jamie stopped playing a couple of years ago and in two years he forgot everything he did on the pitch.

"Mr Souness also forgot but he stopped playing quite a long time [ago], and he also forgets that a couple of years after he left Benfica I coached there. I know a lot about him.

"I learned so much about him but also a certain kind of education, not just in football but also in life. So I prefer to laugh and say that envy is the biggest tribute that the shadows give to the man."

When asked if Chelsea have any new injury worries, Mourinho added: "Everybody wants to play. Nobody is doing like some journalists do where they write bulls**t and then the next press conference they don’t come."

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Ibrahimovic On Chelsea Red Card: I Felt Like I Had 11 Babies Around Me by adolphusberit(op): 7:58am On Mar 12, 2015
The PSG striker was given his marching orders for a challenge on Oscar in the first half and the Sweden international was unimpressed by the reaction of the opposition.

PSG striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has criticised Chelsea's players for their reaction to his Champions League red card, insisting he felt like he had 11 babies around him.

The Sweden international forward was dismissed after 31 minutes following a collision with Blues midfielder Oscar, with the likes of John Terry, Nemanja Matic and Gary Cahill surrounding referee Bjorn Kuipers immediately after the challenge.

And Ibrahimovic was far from impressed with Chelsea's players and the referee, insisting that he attempted to pull out of the tackle. He said: "When I saw the red card I was like 'the guy doesn't know what he's doing' or maybe he saw something else.

"The worst is what I see when I get the red card all the Chelsea players come around. It felt like I had 11 babies around me. I pulled out because I saw him also coming.

"I don't know if he [Oscar] was acting afterwards or where I hit him. It doesn't matter. We won the game and we went through so we will see what happens.

Thiago Silva headed home as PSG battled back from 2-1 down in extra-time to book their place in the quarter-finals of the competition and Ibrahimovic hailed the Ligue 1 side for recovering despite being down to 10 men.

He added: "It was an amazing performance because we were playing with one less. Even in extra-time so they should have all the credit they can get. They played with big hearts. We showed quality and big heart.
