In recent weeks, the polity has been entertained with so much political drama; ranging from party "jumpology" between political heavyweights to barricading of homes of political opponents. We also witnessed different certificate scandals among “honorable” men and women we see as role models, playing the game called politics. The Nigerian State was also greeted with “Nollywood like scenes” of political figures crying on national TV and jumping off police van. Do I need to say more of the unending sugar-coated promises the political players keep dishing out? And in all this, there is a class of people applauding and cheering them; THE ELECTORATES. The big question begging for answer as the election days approaches is: ARE WE READY TO DO THE RIGHT THING AS A PEOPLE? Or we just want to sit back with our zombie-like political culture, while our politicians toss our heads and minds back and forth, give out little token on campaign ground, share Lipton and gala, wheelbarrows, shoe-shining kits, sharing of goats amongst other disgusting items which they tag empowerment programme? When I see things like this, I can’t help but wonder if the Nigerian electorates are hypnotized or they just want to be deliberately stupid; maybe because of tribe, religion, sentiments, creed amongst others. Just imagine in advanced climes, can a presidential aspirant give out popcorns, pizza to electorates in a bid to get their votes? Taking into cognizance since the restoration of democracy in 1999, I have carefully studied the political culture of the Nigerian electorates and they can be classified into 3 categories: (1) The literate and naive electorates. (2) The semi-literate and naive electorates. (3) The illiterate and naive electorates. The literate and naive electorates: I hold this class of people responsible for the underdevelopment of Nigeria. Not only have they been responsible for the enthronement of daft leaders to man the affairs of this nation, they have also exhibited deliberate crass ignorance and have also failed to educate the other categories of electorates. Most of them have become willing tools in the hands of political elites because of crumbs been dished out to them. This is because am still trying to fathom why a sane and educated person after experiencing the poor leadership, unemployment, inflation, which was caused by khaki men and their foot soldiers in civilian wears, this class of electorates still support these people(politicians) reasons best known to them. Or is it the “NEPA bill” statement made and supposedly educated people rather than seeking for political debates and fact still went out to do their usual zombieism called voting. The semi-literate but naive electorates: This class of electorates sure knows their left from right but factors like ethnicity, religion amongst others form the basis of their reasoning mentality when it comes to choosing the right leaders to govern them. They are easily swayed to vote for the highest bidder They could have been redeemed if the literate electorates had played their part in educating them rather than displaying deliberate sycophancy within the polity. The illiterate and naive electorates: The politicians love the category of electorates and that is why they chose to govern this nation like this because this class of people acts as their foot-soldiers carrying out meaningless protest when things don’t go in favor of them. In some cases, this class of electorates wields deadly weapons to cause chaos in the aftermath of election processes. The political class deliberately deny them access to education so they won’t be able to think for themselves. As a nation with diverse religion, tribes, languages, what we need to ask for as the election days approaches is a CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION like that of the United States, and support political parties with manifestos which supports the review of our constitution, not fight against corruption, not building churches and mosques, not sharing gala and Lipton, building mobile toilets, giving out wheelbarrows, sharing shoe-shining kits and call that achievement. According to the Law Dictionary, a Constitutional Convention is defined as A duly constituted assembly of delegates or representatives of the people of a state or nation for the purpose of framing, revising, or amending its constitution. Amending the Nigerian constitution will fix all sectors of the economy and fix our politics. A CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION is a stepping stone to Nigeria’s development. In the words of Prof. Efemini: To break even into the realm of development, we must fix our politics |
