In a weird though shocking incident, an elderly man was stoned to death by monkeys. The incident took place in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh on Thursday. A troop of monkeys surrounded the elderly man and started hurling stones at him and injured him grievously.

The President of Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki, on Thursday, said that the leadership of the All Progressives Congress, led by President Muhammadu Buhari, lacks the vision, capacity and the patience to develop the country.

Recent headlines are tinted towards the flood incidences ravaging most part of the country like Edo, Bayelsa, Kogi, Niger, Adamawa, with several warnings from The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for a likely spread of the flood to other states.

The agencies have gone as far as reeling out same signs of the 2012 disastrous flood which destroyed farmlands, livestock, goods, and services worth millions of naira.

The increase in rainfall is already affecting some communities, thus causing a rise in the water level, as some communities are submerged by the flood already.

Recently, the rising tide from River Niger has caused thousands of residents living on the banks of River in Asaba, Delta State, to desert their homes, seeking ” safe havens”.

Also, no fewer than 35 communities in Etsako East and Etsako Central Local Government Areas of Edo State have been sacked by flood, leaving the natives helpless.

In Bayelsa; Asamabiri, Elemebiri, Ekperiware, and Adagbabiri communities of Sagbama Local Government Area of the state are also wailing in tales of the flood.

There are also records of deaths of innocent Nigerians and missing persons, a case study of Niger State flood which had killed over 40 people. There is also a fear of food shortages as it has washed away farmlands and storage facilities.

In as much as the Government at various levels ought to be commended, not leaving out the National Emergency Management Agency, more needs to be done on rapid sensitization.

The Federal Government should ensure funds and relieve materials get to these victims, as the flood disaster is beyond the control of some State governments, quoting the words of Governor Abubakar Bello of Niger State “The situation definitely is getting out of hand and I think it’s beyond what the state can do”.

The Federal Government through the Ministry of Environment should set up a committee to monitor the disbursement of the Flood Intervention Funds erasing any possible form of embezzlement.

Scenarios, whereby the Flood Intervention Funds are not given to State Government, shouldn’t be heard of, as this will slow down the process of rebuilding, rehabilitating and reintegrating flood victims back to the society.

States and Local Governments should endeavor to do more in terms of building good drainage system, sensitize natives of communities likely to be affected by the flood disaster, ensuring all IDP camps built are conducive for the victims of flood.
