Soknown: 'The end of a race marks the beginning of the next one', so says a wise man. So that capped my 16 years of being a nurse in Nigeria. I gave the country and the profession my all, served in various capacities. Worked in unimaginable conditions, Jungles, Swamps, raging Sea, Spent more time in the air and sea than on the land. and survived a chopper crash. This is testament to the unassuming and unyielding resolve and resillience of a typical Nigerian. While i did not attempt to glorify leaving the shores of Nigeria as a Success in itself, i see it as another opportunity to perform on a much more rewarding platform and in a society that rewards excellence, diligence and all the good virtues which we are naturally embued with as Nigerians. I hope in my little way, been able to inspire someone or at least provide information which could be useful, now or later. Now i want to implore that the mods help in moving this to front page, while i am open for questions, supportive comments and concerns. As i prepare to write on the next phase. well explained |

RuudVanNisteroy: Student Visa The first step is to a get admission from a Canadian institution that is accredited. You application can still be rejected if you don't meet the rest of the requirements below: -Present WAEC certificate -Provide copy of TOEFL or IELTS -Financial requirements - Show proof beyond reasonable doubt you have the financial resources to fund your education for the 1-4 year duration of your degree or diploma. -Police certificate -Birth certificate
Landed Immigrant Has similar requirement to student visa, there is an additional work experience requirement There are certain job titles Canada is looking for in immigrants and there are listed from Skill level 0-B.
I think you should explore the landed immigrant option because your already a graduate and Masters degree is expensive. This is the cheaper option.
The process is pretty simply. Present all the documents they requested , and if you don't have the finances don't forge a bank statement, get a rich friend or relative to transfer money to your account, or get a bank staff to manipulate the number in your accounts, they will find out.
There is no secret to getting a Canadian student visa, it is a straight forward process. Australia has similar requirements to Canada.
You have other options like Germany, where the tuition is free and you just have to get admission and get the German visa. You get 18 months after you graduate to get a job, so you can file for permanent residency
You have Netherlands that offers cheaper tuition than Netherlands, where you have to pay the full tuition after you get admission and go for your visa interview. And get 12 months after you get graduate to get a job, before you can file for permanent residency. what do you suggest for someone that has a degree and want to work in a country like canada |

FrankNetter: School
I would just go right ahead and itemize the differences between my education so far here in the USA vs my education in Nigeria. I would do this under two headings: Similarities and differences.
SIMILARITIES
1) Matric Number: Where you have the matriculation number for nigerian students, you have the student id number over here for US schools which is basically the same thing.
DIFFFERENCES
1) Admission process: Whereas the admission process in Nigeria is lengthy and stressful, getting admission into school here is quite easy. Where there are multiple exams like JAMB and post utme exams in Nigeria, Over here, you just have to take a placement test which consists of English and Mathematics, your scores would determine which 100 level courses you would be required to take for your program.
2) Student - Lecturer ratio: This is one of the things that have shocked me the most. Back then in my 100 level, during our lectures, we were more than 2,000 students to 1 lecturer in one large never-ending hall, over here, its way different. When I got into class for the first time, I was surprised at how small the class is. I was seated in the class with like 14 other persons, I almost had to ask where the rest of the students are.
3) Flexibility: The school system here is really flexible to fit your schedule. You pick the classes you want, you choose the time you want your classes and you have the option of opting for physical or online classes. I chose to take two physical classes and two online classes. I also chose to take my classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays only. In nigerian schools, you must physically attend your lectures in the morning (kindly point out any schools where it happens otherwise).
4) Attitude: This was another shocker for me. The lecturers over here actually WANT you to PASS! like I still can't wrap my head around it. Everybody is so helpful and polite, from the janitors to the lab instructors, everybody! My younger sister is in her penultimate semester studying pre-pharmacy and her CGPA is 4.0/4.0. My point is: if you want to study hard and pass, the lecturers are willing to help. Unlike in most Nigerian universities where the lecturer would tell you getting "A" in their course is a sin.
5) Open-mindedness: My philosophy class is super interesting. The instructor made it in such a way that no question is seen as a taboo, we have heated conversations on different topics, slavery, trump etc etc. one time someone asked if God normally has _sex, heaven did not fall. On the other hand, my philosophy and logic class in my 100L in Nigeria was taught by a reverend father who made sure to throw in his biblical teachings intermittently, looking back at it now, I think that was a tactic to get us to think a certain way.
I'll post more as time goes on.

FrankNetter: Ah! Ups.
Lemme break down my time there for you.
I worked with ups for one year and a couple of months.
The “earn and learn” program is a great program that covers your tuition. It has a lot of benefits in the long run but working at ups warehouse would fvck your body up. The work no be play play. The shift I was working was only scheduled for 4-5hrs daily but that’s non-stop manual labor bro with a 10 minute break. You can’t even sit down for 2 minutes in between loading trailers, your supervisors would start harassing you. Each time I get off work, I would be dreading the 40 minute drive back home cos I’d be so so sleepy. You can’t imagine the number of times I was sleep-driving and nearly crashed my car but on each occasion, I’d be jolted awake at the last second and swerve my car back onto the highway. One time I wasn’t so lucky, I swerved too late, hit a low rise curb and burst my front passenger tire. Luckily I had a spare so I changed it up and continued on my way home.
I thought long and hard about my decision to quit the job. By virtue of the fact that I had worked with them for 7-8 months, they offered me great health insurance. (On paper, they only offer it to those that stay up to a year but I guess it’s 8 months). I heard from those that had been there longer than myself that the job gets sweeter the longer you stay with the company but it’s physically tasking - how much can your back handle? Over the course of the time I spent with them, each time I see people with blue vests (newly hired people), I make a mental guess as to how many days they would stay before running away . Some people quit after the first day, one Chinese boy I met quit after one week.
I thought I was getting a great deal until they offered my a one week paid vacation (because I had been with the company for one year). During that week I was doing nothing at home, cos I decided to just relax. Then I remembered I had made a mental note to check out amazon warehouse job at this amazon facility 15 minutes from my house. I applied for a shift called “flex” where you get to pick up the shifts you want to work on a mobile app on your phone. I got accepted the same day (Monday) and they scheduled my interview scheduled for Wednesday so i went. After the paperwork that day, I and some other persons were assigned to a trainer. When we got to the warehouse proper, the job was nothing compared to ups. No lifting of heavy objects, all you gotta to is scan items, wrap boxes and push it onto a conveyor belt in front of you.
I vex! I was like “is this all you guys do?” For $15/hour. The trainer was surprised I asked that question, he thought I found the job hard when it was the exact opposite!
**sorry for my rambling.
In retrospect, the Ups earn and learn program is super nice but don’t be a truck loader or unloader for too long, move your way up the ladder, try to become a supervisor (I wasn’t too lucky at that). Welcome back Franknetter, Sabi boy! you be inspiring us when still dey naija on the need to Japa, Best Wishes nice Whip.... |

Circulate: I created this new account cause of this topic and to hide my identify in reason i'm somewhat a popular member of this forum. Before I begin, let me plead your indulgences to understanding with me due to the fact I won't be fluent in my grammar and sentence's due to my present state of emotional and psychological imbalance. it's a long post please pardon! Be patient and read to the end.
I gained admission into a federal university university in 2013. Among the 11 universities created by GEJ. After seeing my successfully admission status in jamb website, I was so happy I will be going to school cause I was already damn tired of staying at home doing a petty business without a reasonable gain whatsoever so I wanted a better identity and future to crown it all up, my first school fees was a challenge to an extent I almost lose the admission due to my inability to pay on time and as a matter of fact it was my Aunty that help me with 30k that I used in adding up the little I had at hand to go pay up. Let me not forget to mention my elder bro abroad couldn't rescue me at that moment cause he wasn't financially buoyant as at then.
Finally, I successfully did my first year registrations full of stress and financial instability hence, I started first semester with lot of enthusiasm to come out with an outstanding result and a strong GPA but my instincts failed me when continuous assessment results started coming out. Consequently, I wasn't getting scores I wanted and expect. in other words fine! I vowed to never give up on my dream to get a standard GPA thus, avoid any form of carryover thereof. I started reading seriously upfront before exams cause I was so worried not to score average or low in my exams like I did in my tests. Finally exam started and I was so timid and pressured noticeably, people were asking if I wanted to kill myself cause of exams I just laugh and never got discouraged. Finally exam time table was released 2 weeks to exam and I was so disturbed that I couldn't go to school that two weeks cause I was financial down to even transport my self to school became a problem. Remarkably, some lecturers organized tutorial for us though in my mind I was like "who tutorial epp." so I never attended and I focused on reading privately. Finally the first day of exams came and I was so shivering from the night to the next morning the exam would stake place. so I went to school 25mins half past 8am thinking my exams is scheduled to hold by 9am and I was shock to be in the exam venue where i saw my course mates already in exam hall writing, I felt bad and look so doomed. With courage I went to meet the invigilator my departmental lecturer and pleaded with her that I didn't know the exam was to hold 8am, she didn't allowed me to write even as I was shielding tears she had no pity. All what her claim was, was that I came to the exam hall late pass 30mins after the exam started so, she didn't allowed me to write. I ran to my HOD knelt and begged him to go plead with the said invigilator, he ordered his staffs to throw me out and said there was nothing he could do in reason it was a GST course and not departmental. I ran to everyone necessary that day even my GST Use of English Lecturer, he told me he wasn't in the right position to help me out and that was when reality heated on me that I just missed my first paper and unilaterally translates to Failure cause they was no way they will allow make up in a GST course. I cried and cried so helplessly to an extent I became an object of pity to the eyes of many. Only few came and advised me to move on.
After that ugly experience I became the first person to appear in exam halls all through till the exam ended and one month later, results were released and I became so afraid but at the same time eager to check behold it was 2.68 GPA my first result for that matter with a carry over I never wanted fine I took that semesters as a lesson learnt and moved on.
Subsequent semesters, I red hard and vowed not to ever make same mistakes from my first semester, I put effort yet my CGPA never got high rather, it reduced until it drops to 1.88 with 5 carry over. In my 3rd Year. I couldn't believed my eyes cause it was like some kind of spiritual forces were against me and enemies are attacking and trampling on my destiny. Although at that period i was in school, I always dreamt all sorts of bad dreams like talking and laughing hard loud in dream right from year 1 to my year 4 and even after praying hard and fasting it never stopped consequently, the devil plan still worked on me. I still pushed ahead not until it became obvious in my Final year that I won't be graduating in that school when I saw my final year result with a CGPA of 1.67, with carry over of over 6 and owed courses of 5 making a total of "11" waiting course to be done in the next year this got me weak and loosed hope. I wanted to go on but with the fear of humiliation and frustration that CO's students go through in my department due to the wickedness of my HOD and most of the lecturers, I withdrawn myself and moved on with life.
The issue on ground now is that my elder bro came from abroad recently earlier this year and he asked me why haven't I gone for my NYSC I told him I will be going June, even after living Nigeria, he's still chatting and asking me why haven't I gone. honestly speaking I don't know how to address my brother with the truth by telling him I didn't graduate from school. From all indications I heard from a reliable source he wants to take me out of Nigeria to Europe but I don't Have Bsc and he thinks I do. Please house what do I tell my brother now. suggest for me pls cause it's that bad I'm loosing my mind and at some point in time, I contemplate suicide cause it's not easy of wasting a whole 5years of my life without achieving anything.
Hopefully i plan on writing jamb next year, choose UNIAbuja but what's even my faith of gaining the admission cause I don't know anyone from the school to help me out during the admission process or how am I even sure of graduating eventually. This is the most trial time of my life and I'm depre ssed.
The mods should pls help move this to front page.
CC, Lalasticlala, Dominique, Justwise tell your brother the truth and move on. Buy that jamb form and go back to school. read well (read and jot things down) for better understanding and also read at night. Even if it means buying primary school books to understand basic concepts, do it. When you get admission, be intentional in all your doings, have less friends, have friends with same vision of excelling in their studies. Get relevant materials. if your are not in school, you either be in library or at home. Don't be frivolous with your time. Anything you don't understand ask questions, don't be an island.... learn to do all night reading. pray and attend church regularly... if you do all this meticulously, distractions will definitely come but you will overcome but if you follow these steps... you will surely be victorious at the end. You will definitely succeed |

FrankNetter: This post made me remember something I experienced one day in class.
One major thing lacking in the educational system back home is a checks and balance system for lecturers. Most Nigerian universities have a “senate” charged with dishing out disciplinary actions to erring lecturers and funny enough, it is made up of fellow lecturers who would never see anything wrong in what their colleague did.
In my school here, towards the end of each semester, each student has the chance to review the lecturer and how they taught the class in general. For my biology class, the instructor came in one day with a sealed envelope and informed us that today we would be conducting a survey on her and her class. She called one person and said they should share these forms (attached below) after which another person would collect the forms, seal the envelope and submit to the administrative office for the school and then she left the class. This happened for all my classes. The good thing is it’s anonymous so the lecturer wouldn’t know who wrote what.
Honestly, I feel this is a great and foolproof way to check the rot in our educational system. Where things work.how person no go come out brightest in this kind of environment, franknetter I greet you... hope school is not very demanding.best wishes though |
