What do you mean by the statement "the soil test result isn't promising" ? Also what is the recommended foundation type from the soil test results? It is essential to build right and do it well the first time to prevent incurring unnecessary additional cost . Irespective of the number of floors you intend to build, If the soil capacity is not sufficient to support the load then the structure can fail. Build right according to the structure design & drawings. Lordcrixus: Dear all,
i need the input of experience gurus in the house as regards a project. The site is in a swampy area in kosofe lagos and the soil test result is not promising. But the engineer in charge as assured that we can first do a base and then place the raft on the base for the foundation. We are planning on constructing a two floor building on it, and i have corroborated this claim with other building engineers. I want to know how possible this is in the long term ? And also, he quoted the following for the foundation, which includes the base and the raft:
83 Marine plywood board 300 length of wood 2" by 3" bby 10ft 4 bags of 3" nails 9.5 tons of 16mm iron rod (TMT) 2.5 tons of 12mm iron rod (TMT) 1 ton of 10mm iron rod (TMT) 1 roll of binding wire 6 roll of water cell nylon 50 tonnes of sharp sand 45 tonnes of granite 120 bags of cement 60 litres of water proof cement My question is, are these materials not to much for the building? I have attached the soil test profile and the cpt result and the floor plans of the building |

Your soakaway can be designed and built in such a way that it can support vehicular load conveniently without failing. dapotemi: Pls I'll appreciate your input here. I have gotten to the soakaway stage in my bungalow. I have very limited space. It's half plot (100 by 25), and I was able to squeeze a two bedroom flat and two mini flat on it as a single unit. The problem now is, the only space remaining in front is where d soakaway will be and aside from the conventional soakaway, which other option do I have.. I won't consider Biodigester because this is a rental property. Tenant hardly follow rules. The remaining space can manage two small car. The car will be parked ON d soakaway always and this bothers me. My dad's soakaway just went down on its own last year after 9 years and car is not even allow on it. Someone is advising I consider the ring soakaway due to space. Is there any disadvantage to this ring's own..My land is not very hard, tho not swampy..its just in d middle. What other options do I have? Appreciate any response |

It is a cantilever beam or slab? The depth, the position and size of the rebars of the structural member must be adequate enough to support the expected load. Pclemenza: Good morning, please for someone overseeing the construction of a cantilever of 2.3m, what useful information should I have in mind to get the best result. |

It is possible to have such design without any fear of collapse, if it is properly designed by a structural engineer and also constructed as designed cos the weight of the roof members: trusses and covering would have been taken into consideration during the design stage. For such cantilever beams, the size and position/placement of the reinforcement bar is very important in order to adequately support the load it would be subjected to without any deflection or failure. If your engineer has done the right thing then there is nothing to be worried about. Celepope: Hello guys. I am about to do the roofing in this house but I’m scared if the front won’t collapse after sometime owing to the fact that there is no supporting pillars and with the weight of the wood work and the Gerald roof resting on it. He assured me he used enough 16mm rods with good reinforcement. What do you guys think? |
