The dpm
Dpm (the damp proof membrane ) otherwise referred to as nylon, is a thin sheet of polyethylene sheet laid under a concrete slab before casting the ground floor slab to prevent the concrete from gaining moisture from the ground by capillary action.

The dpm is very important in the prevention of raising dampness in building which can be problematic when it occurs.

I use 1: 1:5 3 for my ground floor/ foundation and 1: 2 : 4 for upper floors..

Did you say 3 inches thickness for your floor? Hope this isn't a suspended floor?

Irrespective of the type of floor, 3 inches is too small for the thickness.


You can use 3/4 inch granite size for floor.

Uses of Chicken mesh wire for crack repairs continues

The yield strength of steel does not depend on the quantity /numbers of rebars but varies with the type of rebars.
For high yield it is between 410-500 N/mm2 while for mild steel is 250N/mm2.

For your columns or other structural members, the quantity and size of rebars are gotten from the designs and calculations of the steel area of that member.

This can be corrected by either cutting or adding to the height of the walls in order to bring them to the same level.

Take level of the highest point on the foundation walls and transfer this point across the walls.

Get your bricklayer to either make up to the correct level with mortar / blocks or carefully cut down the blocks to the required height.

You can also correct it when casting the oversite concrete if the difference isn't much.

You can ask your engineer why the ground beam is optional.
However, the best foundation option for your building would be determined by your structural engineer after carefully studying the result /recommendation of your sub soil investigations.

Do you have the structural drawings for the building. If yes, what type of foundation was designed. Build accordingly to the structural drawings and if you don't have any, get one done.

Actually I saw "ground beam optional" on the quotation an engineer gave. So I was wondering why it should be optional if the foundation was to be done right.

It would be nice to know why you want to know about ground/ foundation beams, who suggested it and why.

Anyways, ground beams simply put are beams placed on the ground. They are part of foundation. They are used when the bearing capacity of the soil is low and where the structure is susceptible to settlement.

The essence is to prevent uneven settlement when it occurs cos the structure has been" tied together " by the ground beam.

By Monolithic I mean the roof beam and fascial are one unit well bonded and strongly held together since they are cast together at the same time.

On apperance, the precast like you said is smoother because of the mould and the fine aggregates that are used for the casting. However rendering can make the insitu fascia fine as well.

Whether it's a bungalow or a storey buildings, I
prefer the in situ casting of concrete facial to the precast option because it is monolithic , stronger and continuous. However the precast is cheaper and faster to install.
