In addition, whether it is an oversite or suspended slab, it is very important to construct to the recommended thickness to prevent deflection of the slab.

Charisdesigns:
I think a better way to render the bolded is

“Build your slab on fill so it doesn’t act like a suspended slab. “

When suspended slabs are designed, one of the main thing we design and check for is Deflection.

Owing that your ground slab is sitting on a well compacted fill material plus hardcor, we are not supposed to experience any form of deflection.

Hence it shouldn’t act as a suspended slab, and as such should not be reinforced as one.

Its a solid for me..

I have used this method severally on my projects: warehouse, residential and commercial buildings because of the nature of the subsoil materials and the building load.

In foundation construction one of the filling materials is the hardcore; an aggregates that is hard, inert with less capillary action eg sharp sand, granites, boulders etc

In areas like Lekki and environs, it is unusual to see this type of filling because the whole area has been sandfilled with sharp sand which is also readily available in large quantities there.

But in areas where the sub soil is clayey, it become imperative to fill with hardcore because clayey is prone to shrinkage and swelling.

In such areas , I prefer these larger granites or smaller boulders as hardcore because they provides added strength for my oversite concrete, fills the void faster than the sharp sand as well as reduces capillarity in the subsoil.

Aforxzy raised a valid concern yesterday but like she always do. She went awol without getting the perspective of the other side.

Have a look at the picture below.

The point where I had the caution tapes was where we were supposed to have a column in our proposed structural drawings.

While carrying out our preliminary site survey, I raised a concern that we cannot have a column at that point (not for aesthetics but safety concern).

So we redesigned the structure to have a cantilevered beam and we move to site.

During construction, I’ve personally witnessed cars hitting the scaffold at that point and we had to put caution tapes on it to alert people driving around the site premises.

As a good manager, you don’t have to wait for it to happen to understand how to prevent occurrences in your sites.

One of the thing that has helped me so far in construction is the way we learnt project management and the person who taught me.

The only things we discuss in meetings are dependencies, deliverables and challenges and we are always ready to learn from others.
Properties › Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by Aforxzy(f):
@the bolded.
Removing a column as an after thoughts on site during the construction stage could be very dangerous cos the structural design and load distribution of the structure has already been done. It is advisable if there is a need to eliminate any structural element there should first be a review and checks with the structural engineer to be sure the structure is safe against deflection and can be adequately supported by the remaining members otherwise a redesigned might be necessary.

Safety first.

n3xt:
I had the column removed in my build in order to optimize the ground floor parking space design from the aspects of column network layout.

For me, it’s a case of choosing functionality over form (aesthetics).

Not having a well structured column layout can/will affect a car’s turning radius in a multi dwelling apartment.

It's a beam supporting another beam.

Sometimes architect design buildings in such a way that putting a column at some positions may distort the aesthetics or circulation of the building. In such situations, the structural engineer can design the beam to be supported by another beam at such positions to eliminate the need for a column. Such beams act like invisible column(s). They are structurally capable of supporting the beam and the slab loads.

Reeefe:
How are dey supported?
Properties › Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by Aforxzy(f):
Those beams are well supported even when the supports are not in the form of column(s).

Reeefe:
How is is able to suspend as long as it is?

Are u sure those engineers that construct event center know these? If yes why do dey keep putting columns that become an obstruction in d space?
Properties › Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by Aforxzy(f):
Water is the best for compaction of soil, it removes the pores and compacts the soil in the process.
However, this method of casting the ground floor after raising the wall to lintel level is a wrong practise. You are supposed to have cast the ground floor foundation before raising the superstructural walls.
This method exposes the foundation to vegetation growth that causes movement within the foundation and cracking . Also the overiste concrete would not be well placed on the foundation blocks and can cause subsidence of the concrete and raising dampness.

The choice of whether to compact or not , will depend on how leveled and strong the top surface is. If there are depressions then you refill and compact and if the is need to cut off excess fill do so, to have an even thickness of the concrete.

Reeefe:
Hello chief . When doing German floor after the foundation has been filled with filling sand and allowed to settle for 6months, would it still be necessary to rammer it b4 settle the level for the German floor n pouring concrete?

Ps: in this scenario the bungalow has been raised up to the leveling n even roofed.

Prestressed concrete can either be insitu or precast depending on the type however because of the technicalities and expertise involved in the construction process it is more of precast than the insitu.

The pre-tensioned concrete is usually done at a workshop or factory site and later transferred to the construction site as precast unit

While the post-tensioned concrete can be cast in-situ or brought to the construction site as precast units.

sonnie10:
If it is not done on site or in situ, can we call the prestressed slab, precast?
Properties › Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by Aforxzy(f): 5:32pm On Oct 30, 2023
In addition to its specialized techniques, prestressed concrete is complex and expensive.
It allows for longer spans lengths, Smaller section /depth , Crack Control and material savings.

rotecch77:
Let me quickly give simple explanation about PRESTRESSED CONC,as I said yesterday.

prestressed concrete involves the stressing of wires or cables ( aka Tendon) by anchoring them at the end of a metal form, which may be up to 120 m in length. Hydraulic jacks stress the wire as required,

This method doesn’t used regular iron rod, the tendon arrangement also is totally different to normal reinforced concrete.
We have 2 method of prestressed conc
1 Pre-tension method
2. Post-tension method

PRE on prestressed conc doesn’t mean PRECAST conc,
All precast conc doesn’t mean they go under prestressed method of conc formation.

See attached pics of prestressed concrete system

Try the Panasonic Cassette Type Air Conditioner. The indoor unit is installed in the ceiling.

Hello everyone. I was wondering if anyone here is familiar with Multi-unit split system air conditioners.

I have a 2 bedroom flat that I want to install AC into, but I want a setup where there's just one outdoor unit, and three indoor units: one for parlour, and one each for the other rooms.

Is anyone here familiar with this stuff? Which AC brand sells this in Nigeria and how much is the price range??

Thank you.[/quote]

This is your slab reinforcement details . Those texts outside the drawing are the callout of the rebars gotten from the results of the structural design & calculation. They represent the quantity, the size and the position/placement of each rebar as indicated.
You need to be able to identify which rebar is being called out, so you don't get them wrongly placed. You should engage the services of a structural engineer, a builder, a draughtsman or anyone who can Interpret structural drawing..
Example the 36 T12 61-175T

36 = the quantity of that rebar
T= high yeild ( twisted rod)
12 = 12mm diameter
61 = bar number
175= spacing between each bar
T= Top bar while
B = bottom bar

That's great. Researchers are working on bamboo as an alternative to steel reinforcement

The Bamboo fibre has a good tensile strength like mild steel and so can be used as reinforcement in concrete structures but with limitations.
It can be infested by insects which will reduce the strength and does not bond properly with the concrete cos it absorbs water during curing and shrink back afterwards creating voids and cracking of the structural element. It is also not advisable to use bamboo in large quantities because of the it size, and resultant expansion and cracking that would occur.
However if well treated against insect attacks and epoxy painted can serves as reinforcement for concrete but I will limit it usage to a storey building.

Tochex101:
Did anyone see the video that trended early this week of someone using bamboo in place of steel rods in Anambra state?
I could have attached the video but don't know how to....

The" green stuffs " are green algea. They are found in damp areas, on well compacted / non porous soil layers or well shaded areas from sunlight.
From your picture, that part of your compound with the algea growth retains water while the front doesn't . This agea grows in a damp and cold area. This is more pronounce because of the rainy season and will soon disappear during the dry season.

You can apply fungicides, bleach solution or baking powder on the affected area and washed off with hard brush.

toluxa1:
Please is there anything that can be done about these greenish stuff on the interlock at the back of the house? To eliminate or reduce it. It makes the backyard really slippery and messy to walk on. Strangely, it's only at the back and not at the front (2nd pix)

Slabs are structural members that can be horizontal or vertical depending on the type of structure.

There are different types of slabs: solid, ribbed, flat or waffle .

This structure has solid slab of 150mm thickness.

The thickness and the reinforcement( size and spacing) should be designed for and not assumed..

I have designed several diagonal beams and columns as a structural Engineer.

n3xt:
True! That’s why you’re Aforzy 🙏

We have 8.5m clear span supported at both ends.

Even the 16.1m beam in the existing structure had some very interesting diagonal (transfer) beams.

Thanks for sharing!

You matter 💯
Properties › Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by Aforxzy(f):
It is impossible for a beam to span without any support..

However, the support can be only at one end of the beam(cantilever beam), at the two ends (simply supported beams) or at other multiple places (continous beam)

These supports can be in the form of column(s), beam(s), a combination of column and beam or even load bearing walls as found in lintels. Supports can be fixed, hinged , pinned etc.

From your picture, the beam is simply supported on a column at one end and a beam on the other end.

No BEAM is UNSUPPORTED, Even Ground beams are supported on either the earth or piles.

True, there are outdoor tiles which are non slippery, strong and able to withstand a wide range of temperatures changes and weather conditions.

However, those tiles are meant for walkways, garden area, sit out etc and not to be driven over by vehicles.

These flooring types are area specific but most people choose based on apperance, easy of construction and cost . While the major factors such as terrain type, sub-soil conditions and usage are ignored.

For area prone to flooding or reclaimed site, paving stones are most suited because such areas will have settlement issues. The Interlocks can be easily removed, repaired and replaced. But if stamped concrete is used in such an area, there will be issues of subsidence and cracking of the concrete floor. To repair this floor type the affected portion will be cut off , refill and re-cast, which might not bond well with the existing concrete and the finishing may vary also.

Which ever option you choose it is very important that the sub base material is well compacted and the right size or thickness is used for a longer lasting floor.

redgem:
Stamped floors are beautiful but when it comes to durability, I'd go with interlocking

My worry has always been about those hangers holding the pop cast especially those ones under the slab.
Are they strong and well bonded enough to support the various designs & load from the suspended POP ?
I think more need to be done to prevent such incident.

QSFemi:
Good morning People.

Attached are pictures of POP Ceiling that fell down recently.

It's a common phenomenon to have POP Ceilings falling down from their place after some reasonable length of time. This can cause serious injury to users of such space.

I think it's time structural engineers supervise the construction of POP Ceilings. Most POP Ceilings are done by tradesmen who don't understand the stability of structures .

I use this ratio as my minimum ratio and every time I do the workers marvel at how much granite I am using. They complain that they are not used to that much granite being used.

I have used both 1/2-inch granite and 3/4-inch granite.

In fact, I was once called Julius Berger for my insistence on the quality of concrete mix.

Once when someone had cause to break a portion of the concrete the workman shouted, do you want to build an everlasting house? This concrete is too strong!

I wash the granite that I use to create a 4'/6"water barrier, but I have never washed the granite that I use for the concrete mixtures.

Going forward, I will.

I even use reinforcement (TMT) for the concrete floors which the laborers said is a very rare event.
