Following the tragic building collapse it was reported that followers of TB Joshua attacked journalists who tried to cover the collapse. Some journalists were reportedly beaten up for trying to take pictures while others got their cameras smashed.

The next day Prophet T.B Joshua invited journalists who had returned to the scene to cover the rescue efforts. He denied his church members had attacked the journalists. He said the attacks were carried out by “people in the community”

Many people would wish to clock 100 years like you, how does it feel?
Only God can give the power to live long because it is beyond human power. No man has total control over his life or the power to decide how long he wants to live. It is only what God says over someone’s life that would come to pass. So, I give God the glory because it is beyond me.

Do you still have friends, like age mates that you grew up together with who are also alive?
There is none again, as much as I know; they have all died. I can’t really say if there are still such people of my age in the town where I come from, but in the church that I attend here, the very old have retired to their homes and the ones that still come to church are younger than I am.


Now that you are 100 years old, how long would you like to live?
It depends on what God wants. I’m only waiting for his time. The only thing on my mind is to make heaven.

What fond memories do you have about your growing up?
When we were young, one of the things we looked forward to was celebrating our birthday because our parents used to mark it for us. As our birthdays approached, we would be very happy because our parents used to give us chicken heads, specially. So, it was a day we looked forward to because it was only the celebrant that would eat the head and nobody would contest that with him/her.

We learnt you loved nursing as a profession when you were young. How do you feel that you didn’t become a nurse eventually?I believe God didn’t want me to study Nursing. When I was in Standard three, there was a time I fell ill and I was taken to the hospital. The doctor who attended to me pleaded with my father that he should allow me to stay with him for some time so he could teach me some things about nursing, but my father refused because he thought if I was taken abroad, he might not see me again. I wasn’t even told about it at that time, but later when I found out, I was bitter. It was very painful. When I got married, my brother-in-law offered to teach me but we soon left the area we were in Ibadan and so, he couldn’t teach me. It was after that God told me that the best vocation for me was to be self-employed, like an artisan, so I dropped the idea.

How did you know God spoke to you?
If you have a project or a plan in mind, if God is not in support of it, he will tell you not to do it. In fact, you may not be able to do it regardless of how hard you try. God could speak through a man, but the important thing is that he would let you know the danger in what you planned to do, and you may not know his reason then, but usually, such reasons would become obvious later. If a spirit tells you to do something and you oblige and it turns out to be good, then, that is the spirit of God. It is only an evil spirit that would tell someone to do a bad thing. So, the spirit of God is always talking to us, but we have not been hearing from him, coupled with the fact that we have not been serving God enough.

What have you been doing since you retired?
I retired in 1982. And since then, I have been serving the Lord and relaxing.

With all you have seen in this world, what is your advice to the children of today?
They should serve God, and they will prosper. The children of today now know more than us, but they should learn from those above them and love God with all their heart and He will direct them.

Yesterday there were reports that a private jet was seized and two Nigerians were being investigated for trying to smuggling $9.3 million in cash into South Africa (read here). It turns out that the private jet the money was found in belongs to the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN president, Ayo Oritsejafor via a company he co-owns, Eagle Air. But in a statement released today, Pastor Oritsejafor said he had leased the jet to another company so had no control over the use of the jet.

"On behalf of Pastor Oritsejafor, we can confirm that although he holds an interest in Eagle Air, the aircraft in question is not operated by Pastor Oritsejafor. The aircraft was leased to, and is operated by Green Coast Produce Limited since August 2” a statement from the church read.

Green Coast Produce Limited then released a statement saying that the aircraft was hired by one John Ishyaku and therefore they can't be liable for any alleged infractions either in Nigeria or South Africa after the hire.

“On the 5th of September 2014 the aircraft was hired from us by a John Ishyaku. The charter to John Ishyaku was upon the following documented terms: (a) Depart Abuja-Johannesburg on the 5th of September 2014 (b) Return to Abuja on the 6th of September 2014 (c) To wait and return with the passengers. All cargoes were accompanied by passenger who could readily defend the contents. We are not and cannot be privy to any alleged extraneous cargo transported on the aircraft other than that declared in the agreed terms of hire. We are not liable and cannot be construed as a party to any alleged infractions, either in Nigeria or South Africa as he case may be, after the hire of the aircraft." the company said.

The private jet carrying the money, allegedly meant for buying weapons, landed at Lanseria International Airport, Johannesburg on September 5. The money was loaded in three suitcases but attracted suspicion when the suitcases were scanned. The money and the jet have been seized by SA customs pending investigation.

Lagos state governor, Babatunde Fashola today visited the site of the collapsed building inside the Synagogue Church of All Nations in Ikotun. He commiserated with the church founder, Prophet T.B Joshua and also ordered all church workers to stop work on the site to enable officials of the Nigerian Emergency Management Authority work effectively. Meanwhile, the Lagos state Commissioner for Physical planning, Mr Toyin Ayinde, has revealed that the 5-storey building had no government approval for its construction.

Speaking to newsmen at the site today, the state Commissioner said records in his office shows that no permit was handed to the civil engineers for the building to be erected but that he was awaiting the church engineers to present the building permit they have to erect the collapsed building.

After realizing that Boko Haram has started taking over Nigerian villages and towns in broad daylight, President Goodluck Jonathan invited ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo to a meeting in Aso Rock on Wednesday where they discussed the nation’s security challenge and how to help.

Obasanjo told in Abeokuta on his return from Abuja that the meeting was purely on security matters:

“Yes, I can confirm that I met with Mr. President on his invitation. In fact, he had wanted to come down to Abeokuta, but as a sign of respect to the Office of the President, I had to go. We had discussion on the country’s security issues and that is all.”

The former president said he would continue to make himself available on national issues in the interest of peace and progress of the entire country.

On the recurrent Eggon/Fulani crisis in Nasarawa, Obasanjo called on government of Benue and Nasarawa to ensure that peace was restored to the warring communities, as it is their responsibility to do so.

In his words, “There is no way such will not happen, but the two state governments should come up with lasting solutions. A 15-year-old boy has died after participating in a game that is circulating on the popular social network FaceBook. James Shores was burned to death after his entire body was engulfed in flames.

The #FireChallenge involves covering your body with an accelerant and setting yourself on fire. One’s friends will then video the act and share it on the internet. The imbecilic act is supposed to elicit laughter as onlookers and internet viewers watch the reaction from the party who is on fire.

Shores doused himself with alcohol and was set ablaze by his friends. Those who participate in this “game,” usually do so inside of the shower in case the fire spreads. In Shores case, he was not near the shower or any other water source. His friends battled unsuccessfully to put the fire out, and he later died from his injuries.


Police are warning participators about the dangers of this act and have urged the public to stop sharing the videos.

Police Commissioner James Daniels spoke with News-Two saying, “We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and offer our condolences to the family. It is paramount that the public stop sharing these videos. The people who participate in this so-called “game” do so for the notoriety and short-lived fame they receive on the internet. Taking away this fame could deter others from making the same mistake.”
FaceBook is doing their part by deleting all #FireChallege videos off of their website.

The 37-year-old earns a salary of N20,000 in the hotel where he works.
A man in Jigawa has performed a remarkable deed as he found and returned N17 Million.
37-year-old Yusuf Usman discovered the money in an iPad jacket in one of the rooms he supervises at the Three-Star Hotel in, Dutse, Jigawa.

Usman earns just N20,000 monthly but that did not tempt him to keep the money. He said:
“I have been with State, for the past 15 years and I am currently their Reception Manager. What actually happened was that on that fateful day that I found the money, I was on my way from reception to see one of the house-keepers. I passed through the hotel garden where some of our guests usually relax.


As I was going, I saw an iPad lying close to one of the flowers in the garden and there was nobody there. So I went and took the iPad so that I could take it to the reception and wait for the owner who may come for it later.

When I looked at it closely, I saw some foreign currency and some wad of naira notes in the iPad jacket. I quickly took it to the management and I was asked to keep the money and the iPad in my safe at the reception. I did not count the money myself,”

“Three days later, a staff of Jigawa College of Health Technology, Jahun, who came to book the hotel for their guests called me and said that one of the guests, who was lodged in the hotel had called to say that he misplaced his iPad containing some money, but can’t remember whether it was in the hotel he forgot it or not. I told them that it was in the hotel and I found it,”

The reception manager said the people from Jahun were so happy and full of thanks when they came to claim the money.

“When the owner of the money found out that his money has been found, he was very happy. They thanked me and the management of the hotel. The Jigawa College of Health Technology wrote a commendation letter to me.

It was there they stated that the money was over $100,000 because the jacket also had local currency in it. My management also gave me a commendation letter. Governor Sule Lamido was informed and he showered a lot of praises on me.
He was very proud of me,”
“As you can see I am not financially comfortable but that is not the point. What is not yours is not yours. There are three reasons why I will never take somebody’s property. One, stealing is against the teaching of Islam and I was strictly brought up according to Islamic teaching.
Secondly, my father has always warned me never to tamper with what is not mine because it can bring destruction in my life and thirdly, it is the tradition of our hotel not to hide whatever item we found. Even if it is not me that found the iPad and the money, whoever found it will have returned it. We have a store in the hotel for forgotten items.

Some items have been there for 10 years. I don’t see what I did as a big deal. I am just doing my duty,”

“I don’t believe that running away with somebody’s money will make me wealthy. Wealth belongs to Allah and if Allah destined me to be wealthy it will come to pass. My wife is so proud of me that her respect for me has doubled,”
Usman admonished the youth to preserve their integrity and to realize that a good name is better than wealth.
