popizaino:Hmmm. He probably was technically as good as Zidane, maybe better. He was the best passer i ever saw, maybe the best ever. Zidane though was a big game performer and a scene stealer. He usually rose to the occasion when the chips were down. The way France collapsed when he was injured or retired and then resurrected when he came out of retirement gives you an idea of how much he influenced the outcome of matches. In 2006 when he was about to retire he still had enough in his arsenal to embarrass the best talent that Spain, Brazil etc could offer. So even if an argument can be made that Laudrup was better, Zidane was definitely greater. |
larride:Happy Birthday Larride. LLNP |
chic2pimp:As a Laudrup fan it pains me to say i might have still done what Cruyff did. 4 world class players, all time greats really. However at that time Stoichkov and Romário were 2 of the very best players in the world, and had a sweet thing going scoring goals. It was really between Koeman and Laudrup. Koeman’s ability on the ball as a ball playing CB meant he was very crucial in the way they played and there really was no like for like sub for him. Laudrup’s creativity in midfield could be partially replaced by Spaniards like José Mari Bakero, Amor, and Begiristain. And those ones were also more hardworking ( but never as creative in a million years). |
chic2pimp:Yup but the main reason Laudrup left to join Real was the fact that Cruyff repeatedly chose Koeman, Stoitchkov, and Romario as his foreign 3. Laudrup switched to Real and won the league the very next season with them |
Leyqute:Yup they weren’t. Italian Seria A on TV had a match that was shown (abridged) and then round up of all the other games. Same with Football Made in Germany. But there was the option of cable esp for French league, EPL, La liga. Then there were video clubs that had most of the top games on tape. It was not easy but for crazy fans like us we hunted football wherever it was. The relative lack of availability of foreign sports media and the lack of foreign opportunities for Nigerian players made our local league popular though. |
raumdeuter:Lol I didn’t even see this before I replied to Nihilist. Truly your head dey there. Nihilist na real indomie generation. Only that e sabi book. Lol |
nihilistjnr:There was already cable in the early 90s. There was football made in Germany on TV There was Italian Serie A on TV LTV 8 with Nwana Iwajoku and later Ayo Agbesanwa had a Saturday sports program. That’s were I watched the 1988 FA Cup between Liverpool and Fashanu’s Wimbledon on delayed transmission. NTA 5 had Sports spectacular by Chuka Momoh where you might watch a Euro 84 or Euro 88 game on replay, or a grand slam tennis match (Chuka being a tennis guy), or a boxing bout between Hearns, Hagler Leonards etc. Then there were a few video clubs then where you could rent taped league matches from the main leagues in Europe. |
Kimbeast:Greatest shock possibly in UEFA Champs League final history. Baresi and Costacurta suspended. Papin, Brian Laudrup could not play because of the 3 foreigner limit rule. Lentini not recovered from his horrific car accident. He never did fully recover anyway. Van Basten also injured and to retire I believe at the end of that season. Then on the Barca side Cruyff deciding not to field Michael Laudrup cos of the same 3 foreigner limit rule. |
weedtaker:Nihilist and several others were smart enough to recognize i was excluding CR7 and Messi from the debate because they are not your prototypical CF. For those who are a little slow cognitively i meant apart from Messi and CR7, DeLima is the greatest forward in modern football. |
sod09:Better comparison. Van Basten was more complete. I don’t think he had a weakness on the pitch. Was unlucky at major national competitions apart from Euro 88 BUT he owned the leagues and European Cup. R9 was better though. These 2 are at the upper echelon of strikers. They are all time greats. |
Kimbeast:That was the work of Fabio Capello. One of the reasons why i don’t really like him, too negative. He bought a world class central defender like Desailly and put in defensive midfield to play in front of a defence that was already probably the greatest ever seen. At the same time benching flair/attacking players like Savicevic, Gullit etc that he considered defensive liabilities. They didn’t score goals but they didn’t concede either. About 10 teams scored more than them, yet they won the league. |
sod09:You are my guy so i will just start by giving you some advice. With the same hands that you used to type that you were too young to judge between Del Piero and Totti because it was before your time you are now typing that Aguero and Suarez are better than De Lima. De Lima that played same era as Del Piero is not before your time but Del piero is before your time? And you think you will make heaven like this? You then compounded your sins by comparing R9 to Aguero and Suarez who are not more than a poor man's Romario. If you took Romario and removed a good deal of his skill and some of his acceleration you will get Aguero. Comparing Aguero to R9 only confirmed your first statement on this matter; It was before your time, and you know nothing about this issue John Snow. |
sod09:Agüero and Suarez? You got jokes. |
A40:Yeah that might be his problem. He looks and talks tough but he is a bit of a softie. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Steelers but at a point in time one has to expect more than just winning seasons based on the wealth of talent he has had at his disposal. |
Roland17:Now saying it was not even close is where you go overboard. Totti lasted longer and was more versatile, and Del Piero had a better peak level. I wouldn’t argue with either personally, but saying Del Piero was better and its not close or Totti was better and its not close is just untrue. |
raumdeuter:Sorry just seeing this, had to sleep. Totti had longevity of career and was able to adapt his game as he got older. Sheer talent, genius, and absolute best level I would give it to DelP whose career was derailed by niggling injuries. |
raumdeuter:It’s Beckham. Right age, right country, mentioned Bobby Charlton Soccer Schools. |
raumdeuter:English boy born in the late 70s or latest 1980. Mark Hughes n Lineker were at Barca in late 80s P.S still looks like Beckham to me. |
Those that are still in love with Lukaku can port to Inter Milan if they so desire. He is no longer a United player and should not take up too much space on a United thread. |
A40:The coach talks a big game, looks the part, and of course has the ring to back it up but I am starting to doubt the man. He has wasted so juicy looking rosters over the last few seasons. |

. |
I am just glad i don’t have to weekly watch the ball bounce off Lukaku’s boot like an empty tin of Peak milk again. |
snrman:Yes. Take away Juve and maybe Napoli you have mainly wretched teams there. How many years running have Juve been champions now? How well have the other teams performed in the champions league? The league where Ciro Immobile will score 20 plus goals then go to score 2 goals in Germany and Spain is a moi moi league. The league where old man pensioner Quagliarella is top scorer is a moi moi league. |
Lol is it until Lukaku goes scoreless for the whole Serie A season before we can say selling him was a good move. So now he has scored 1 goal it was a mistake to sell him abi? I said it here before his debut that the slow paced Serie A would actually favour him. His atrocious touch won’t matter as much over there. That league is a moi moi league anyway but that’s not to take away anything from Lukaku who I hope succeeds there. He is no longer a United player so please his fans should spare us the Lukaku alerts. |
sod09:There is no hope for Nigeria. Look at the kind of youths that abound in the country. This guy is just one from many, only that he was brave (or stupid) enough to air his putrid mindset. No conscience, no remorse, no self awareness. |
It seems Crystal Palace moved Zaha to the right to play against Shaw. |
Norwich are relegation contenders. That defence na ashewo defence. |
This Norwich defence is actually very poor. Chelsea should be winning this easily. |
10 kobo sense Barkley no get. |
I would (not) love to see a CB partnership of Zouma and Smalling. A sight to make eyes sore. |
