The devil is not the problem of man. In fact the devil is an invention of Organized religion and men to enslave and scam their gullible fellows. People should stop blaming an imaginary devil that does not exist. Blame those using religion to instill fear in gullible folks so that they can control and scam them.

PoliticsRe: "The Tragedy Of Lagos" By Professor Pius Adesanmi. by afroniger:
Nice read. But I must say that the author is merely being naive. In the world of politics, the likes of Tinubu will always exist, whether we like it or not. It is just the nature of the game. There will always be ex-leaders who will attempt to self-perpetuate themselves long after they've left the scene. Some call them 'Godfathers', others prefer 'Kingmaker' or 'Shot callers'. Awolowo, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Ahmadu Bello, Buhari, Adelabu, Adedibu, Rasheed Ladoja, Olusola Saraki, Bukola Saraki, Olusegun Obasanjo, James Ibori, Godswill Akpabio, Theophelus Danjuma, Atiku Abubakar, Orji Uzor Kalu, Peter Obi, (Okorocha is trying to become one too) e.t.c. They have all successfully played the roles of influencial 'kingmaker' in one form or another and at some point in our political history. Some more successful than others, but all of them share this same attribute.

As far as I am concerned, the only thing that has set BAT apart is that he has managed to somehow retain his influence (which I attribute to 'luck' on his part since many of his contemporary ex-governors weren't so lucky in self-perpertuating themselves on the political scene of their states after office for as long as he has). Even within Lagos PDP, Bode George is their central rallying figure. The idea that without Tinubu, 'slavery' or godfatherism will suddenly end in Lagos is but mere wishful thinking, particularly in a state as rich and important as Lagos. There will always be ambitious politicians willing to project themselves. And they will continue remaining relevant until their luck runs out, or until they die. undecided

E pain am. There's absolutely nothing objective about anything you said but rather rumours, conjectures and unsubstantiated accusations. If you are going to accuse someone of stealing, at least be man enough to have something called PROOF. In saner climes you can get into trouble for defamation by accusing someone of 'stealing' either because you just don't like the person, or based on unsubstantiated rumour. But in the jungle called Nigeria, people just talk anyhow and defame other people. Even if the person you are accusing has indeed stolen, the onus is on you the accuser to prove it via incontrovertible evidence. You don't just go about calling people 'thief' like an agbero. I shake my head at people like you. So your proof that they stole is the way Tinubu supposedly 'looks' different now compared to the way he did in the 90shuh Somebody that even looks sickly now sef. Fashola's hair too don white, not even gray now, i bet you will link that to the money he stole as well. And by the time Ambode leaves he may have added another 10 lbs, maybe that will be your reason for accusing him of 'stealing' too. See reasoning. Please how old are you? Do you look the same way you did 10 years ago? If no is your answer, is it because you stole money from your boss or from somewhere that you look different? Come on, you can come up with a better explanation than that. These people were not poor before going into government so what evidence do you have that they would not look or live the same or even better outside govt?

David Lawder

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Trump administration is pressing China to cut its trade surplus with the United States by $100 billion, a White House spokeswoman said on Wednesday, clarifying a tweet last week from President Donald Trump.

Last Wednesday, Trump tweeted that China had been asked to develop a plan to reduce its trade imbalance with the United States by $1 billion, but the spokeswoman said Trump had meant to say $100 billion.

The United States had a record $375 billion trade deficit with China in 2017, which made up two thirds of a global $566 billion U.S. trade gap last year, according to U.S. Census Bureau data.

China reported its 2017 U.S. trade surplus as $276 billion, also about two thirds of its reported global surplus of $422.5 billion.

The White House spokeswoman declined to provide details about how the administration would like China to accomplish the surplus-cutting goal — whether increased purchases of U.S. products such as soybeans or aircraft would suffice, or whether it wants China to make major changes to its industrial policies, cut subsidies to state-owned enterprises or further reduce steel and aluminum capacity.

The request comes as the Trump administration is said to be preparing tariffs on imports of up to $60 billion worth of Chinese information technology, telecoms and consumer products as part of a U.S. investigation into China’s intellectual property practices.

It is also unclear if the requested $100 billion reduction would address U.S. complaints about China’s investment policies that effectively require U.S. firms to transfer technology to Chinese joint venture partners in order to gain market access.

The issue is a core part of the probe being conducted under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, a provision seldom invoked since the World Trade Organization was founded in 1995. Trade experts have said tariffs imposed as a result of the China intellectual property probe may fall outside of WTO rules.

In a Thursday editorial, widely-read Chinese state-run tabloid the Global Times said the United States was trying to play the victim.

“If the U.S. wants to reduce its trade deficit, it has to make Americans more hard-working and conduct reforms in accordance with international market demand, instead of asking the rest of the world to change,” it wrote.

“Once a trade war starts, capable countries won’t bow to the U.S. China has tried hard to avoid a trade war, but if one breaks out, appeasement is not an option.”

U.S. TARGETS INDIAN SUBSIDIES

But Washington showed on Wednesday that it has not abandoned the global trade body, launching a WTO legal challenge to India’s export subsidies for domestic companies, including producers of steel, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, textiles and IT products.

U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said India had failed to remove the subsidies as required by WTO rules after the country reached certain economic benchmarks.

The United States is expected to invoke a national security exception to WTO rules in imposing import tariffs of 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum announced by Trump last week.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross told lawmakers on Wednesday his department would soon publish procedures for product-specific exemptions from the steel tariffs for items that are not available from domestic producers or in short supply. The procedures are due by Sunday.

Anne Forristall Luke, president of the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association, said the group would be “pressing very hard” for an exemption from tariffs for high-strength wire rod used to make cord for steel tire belts that is not produced by U.S. mills.

The largest sources for the material are Japan and Brazil, she said, adding that U.S. tire producers will lose business to foreign competitors if their steel costs rise.

“We are working this from the product side and the country side. We think we have a very good case,” she told Reuters.

PoliticsObasanjo’s Coalition For Nigeria Movement Disowns SDP by afroniger(op): 10:23pm On Mar 13, 2018
https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/03/coalition-nigeria-movement-disowns-sdp/

By Emmanuel Ujah

Coalition for Nigeria Movement (CNM) has denied insinuations that it has adopted the Social Democratic Party (SDP) as the political platform through which to realize its aspirations. CNM is being promoted by former President Olusegun Obasanjo and claims to be a group of progressives, as well as, technocrats determined to provide Nigerians with an alternative, other than the two dominat political parties, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the main opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Mr. Omoruyi Edoigiawerie made the coalition’s position known in a statement in Abuja, yesterday, on behalf of its National Steering Committee. According to him, the coalition would not allow itself to be used for the political interests of any group in the country.

The statement reads, “The attention of the Coalition for Nigeria Movement (CNM) has been drawn to the speculation that it has endorsed the Social Democratic Party (SDP) as its political platform. It is imperative to categorically state that such insinuation is completely false. We urge all Nigerians to disregard it, as CNM is not in collaboration with SDP for any purpose.

“While we understand the yearning of Nigerians for a credible political alternative, it is imperative that such an alternative is not imposed on Nigerians, but that it is instead a product of our collective decision and aspiration. At this time as a Nation, we are not in doubt as to the myriad issues that affect us and the need to resolve them.

“However, if we are to surmount avoidable challenges, then there is a need to ensure that the issues that have brought us to where we are as a Nation are adequately captured and a strategic and concise plan mapped out to give every Nigerian, irrespective of tribal or religious leanings, a sense of belonging as we work to help Nigeria take its rightful place among the comity of nations.

“To achieve this, we cannot afford to leave any Nigerian behind, particularly our women and youth.

“The Coalition for Nigeria Movement has since its inception provided a strong platform for Nigerians to converge, voice their frustrations and challenges, and collectively chart our direction as a Nation. This is an ongoing process and we will not be hounded into making divisive and ill informed decisions to satisfy people who have directly or indirectly contributed to our national malaise and decline.

“At the right time, which will be very soon, the Movement as a team will make an announcement on its strategic plan that will leave no Nigerian in doubt of where we stand, and most importantly, the plan will be one that will not leave any Nigerian without hope of a viable future in a safe and prosperous Nigeria.”

PoliticsLagos Denies Increasing Motor Vehicle Registration, Number Plate Rates by afroniger(op): 4:32pm On Mar 13, 2018
…Says Mischief Makers Using Land Use Charge To Misinform Residents

The Lagos State Government on Tuesday debunked rumours of increase in the cost of processing motor vehicle particulars and application for number plates, saying the rates remain the same across the State.

A statement by the State’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Kehinde Bamigbetan said the clarification became necessary in response to enquiries by members of the public who are genuinely concerned about the rumours of increases in charges relating to the motor vehicle administration.

Bamigbetan said anyone with evidence of any increase in motor registration rates from any of the official Centres managed by the Lagos State Motor Vehicle Administration Authority (MVAA) should report to the agency or the Ministry of Transportation.

According to him, “Although, the cost of maintaining the roads and expanding infrastructures which ease the operations of vehicles is enormous, the Lagos State Government shall continue to bear the burden of keeping the roads motorable and safe for all users.”

He said some mischief makers were desperately exploiting the challenges posed to the government by the new Land Use Charge Law which seeks to raise more money for the provision of public infrastructures for the benefit of all, to misinform the public.

It would be recalled that Governor Akinwunmi Ambode had also debunked insinuations that many tax items were reviewed upward, saying that the claim was not true. Speaking to journalists after leading a symbolic walk against sexual and domestic violence on Monday in Alausa, Governor Ambode said his administration was very sensitive to the people, and would not go all out to deliberately overburden them.

“I want Lagosians to understand one particular issue. We have over 300 tax items for which nothing has been touched apart from this Land Use Charge and maybe one other. But again, we are a very responsive government; we are very sensitive because at the end of the day, governance is about the people; it is about what they want.

“Yes, people might like that infrastructural development is on the progressive chart in Lagos but also it comes with a price. But notwithstanding in the middle of all that, a responsive government will listen to the yearnings of her people.

“At the end of the day, it’s all for the development of Lagos. What this government is interested in is to create a trajectory and framework of permanent prosperity for Lagos. It is not about today, it is about the future and if there is going to be permanent prosperity in Lagos, some things have to be done but I can tell you based on the dialogue and the things we have been receiving on the Land Use Charge, obviously we would respond positively to those yearnings,” Governor Ambode said.
