CSOs urge National Assembly to conclude 2025 constitution review without delay A coalition of organisations has urged the National Assembly to conclude the 2025 Constitution Review, warning delays on forty-four amendments threaten stability. In a statement, issued on Friday by the TOS Foundation’s Communications Director, Mr Adejare Hammed, said citizens nationwide participated actively in submissions and hearings, stressing that lawmakers must reciprocate public commitment by completing essential reforms without hesitation now. The coalition emphasised urgent electoral reforms, noting INEC’s timetable and looming party primaries, and recalled that the broad 2025 review followed extensive public consultations seeking stronger local governments, improved security, judicial efficiency. Hammed said citizens nationwide participated through hearings and memoranda. “People have fulfilled their duty; lawmakers must act, Nigeria cannot endure further uncertainty," Hammed said. He warned that delay worsens insecurity, weakens governance and erodes democratic trust across communities. They stressed electoral reforms, citing INEC’s timetable and nearing primaries. “Hesitation risks another flawed cycle, the coalition cited consultations demanding local governments, security, judicial efficiency and gender-responsive provisions," the communications director said. The CSOs urged Parliament to finish the review, saying decisive action will stabilise Nigeria before 2027. "Avoidable uncertainty around reforms that ordinary Nigerians have long demanded. “These amendments address issues that touch on the daily realities of citizens safer communities, stronger local governments, credible elections, a more effective judiciary and a more accountable state. “Nigerians have participated fully through hearings and consultations. They have done their part; now lawmakers must do theirs," he said. The coalition warned that prolonged inaction could worsen the country’s governance challenges. “Scrutiny is necessary, but delays are dangerous,” the statement added. “Insecurity is deepening, local councils are collapsing, voter confidence is declining and democratic legitimacy continues to erode.” “Every delay harms public trust,” they warned, committing to mobilising citizens and sustaining pressure for reforms, " Hammed said. The statement was jointly signed by Womanifesto, WILAN, TOS Foundation, CISLAC, WARDC, WIMBIZ, GSAI, The Women International, I-Teach Africa and the National Secretariat for the Reserved Seats for Women Bill Campaign Coalition. The Nigeria’s constitution review process is a periodic amendment exercise undertaken by the National Assembly to address structural gaps in governance, electoral administration, federalism, and the justice system. The 2025 review cycle is considered one of the most extensive since 1999, following widespread public clamour for reforms after the 2023 elections. |

While handing over of the boat to the Marine and Infrastructure unit, Keshinro, said that the focus would be on monitoring of illegal dredgers around the third mainland, Carter, Eko and all other bridges in the state. “We have been having conversations with all the stakeholders around this bridge or those who have activities with the bridge in order for us to work together with a view to stopping the activities of illegal dredgers. “And as we are carrying this out in Lagos , they are also doing the same thing in the office of the national security adviser by inviting all the stakeholders to this campaign and receive regular update for us to be able to work and stop these illegal dredgers. “The agreement and conclusion was that within one kilometer radius there should not be any activity. “For us to be able to deepen this campaign, we have established the marine and infrastructure protection unit designated to carry out the monitoring of illegal dredgers activities” he said. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Lagos NSCDC Marine and Infrastructure Protection Unit would be headed by Mr Emmanuel Oloyede. Keshinro said they could not categorise all dredgers as illegal because some were licensed by the relevant regulatory agencies. He explained that, during discussions with the operators, the NSCDC discovered that many possessed valid licences, but the Corps did not want them operating outside their approved boundaries. He added that the NSCDC had Mining Marshals in its mining department who monitored dredging activities to identify legal and illegal operators, and that anyone found operating unlawfully would be arrested and prosecuted. Mr Peter Mkenchor, Chairman of the Ijora GRA Estate, commended the Federal Government and described the donation as a welcome development. He said they had previously been terrorised by sea pirates, but that no such incidents had occurred in the last five years due to the presence of NSCDC officials. We are not just rehabilitating a road; we are enhancing lives and connecting communities,” he said. He explained that the 20-kilometre stretch had served the city for decades and required urgent repairs to restore efficiency and safety. According to him, the works form part of a broader plan to integrate the Green Line Rail and other transport projects to reduce pressure on the corridor. “Lagos is a city in motion. The state will prominently showcase the 80 Million Clean Cookstoves (CCS) Initiative and the Four Billion Tree Planting Project, the world’s largest UNFCCC Article 6.4-approved reforestation programme. Mrs Titi Oshodi, Special Adviser to the Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy, disclosed the plans in a statement issued in Lagos. She said Lagos’ participation at the Climate Innovation Zone, hosted by Climate Action, will position the state as a leader in climate investment and innovation. “This collaboration places Lagos among a select group of African subnational governments demonstrating actionable climate leadership and investment-ready solutions,” Oshodi said. The 80 Million Clean Cookstoves Initiative, developed by GreenPlinth Africa and endorsed by the Office of the Vice President and National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), is a flagship project. In partnership with Oando Clean Energy, the initiative will deploy 80 million metered, biomass-powered cookstoves to households across Nigeria, significantly reducing over 1.2 billion tonnes of carbon emissions. The programme is also expected to create thousands of green jobs, contributing to economic growth while supporting Nigeria’s green energy transition. “Lagos is championing Africa’s climate ambition, where innovative solutions meet practical implementation,” Oshodi said, emphasising the city’s role as a continental climate pioneer. She added: “Our participation at COP30 demonstrates how subnational leadership can mobilise global climate finance, scale clean energy access, and deliver a just, inclusive transition for millions of citizens.” Oshodi highlighted that the initiative reflects the visionary leadership of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, whose administration prioritises climate action, resilience, and sustainable urban development. “Through COP30, Lagos aims to spotlight its integrated climate finance framework and showcase flagship initiatives across clean energy, transport decarbonisation, agriculture, and circular economy innovation,” she said. Among the state’s major engagements, Lagos will host a high-level private roundtable, titled ‘From Lagos to the World – Financing Urban Climate Solutions for a Just and Inclusive Transition,’ on Nov. 6. The session, headlined by the state governor, will bring together development finance institutions, global investors, and international policymakers to explore innovative models for city-led climate financing. Presentations will include LAMATA on low-carbon transport, LASPA on electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems on nature-based solutions and agroforestry. Private sector innovators, such as Oando Clean Energy and GreenPlinth Africa, will also highlight their clean energy projects, including the global carbon finance potential of the 80 Million Clean Cookstoves Initiative. Lagos will participate in the Africa Innovation Forum Main Stage Panel on 7 November, sharing its model for climate financing and local-global collaboration with leading experts and partners. The state’s involvement in the Climate Implementation Summit on Nov. 8 will further spotlight the 80 Million CCS Initiative, the first biomass clean cooking programme integrating on-chain Digital MRV technology. “This inclusion demonstrates Nigeria’s pioneering role in leveraging climate technology to deliver measurable emission reductions alongside social and economic co-benefits,” Oshodi said. A private Dealroom Session on Nov. 8, titled ‘Bridging Ambition and Capital: Financing Bankable African Climate Solutions,’ will bring together DFIs, private investors, and carbon financiers. The session aims to unlock capital for high-impact projects, including the 80 Million CCS Initiative and Lagos’ broader climate-smart urban portfolio. “Through these engagements, Lagos will cement its position as a continental leader in climate innovation, advancing projects that contribute directly to global emission reduction targets,” she added. Oshodi concluded that the state’s participation reflects a commitment to fostering inclusive growth, resilience, and sustainable development while demonstrating Africa’s potential in climate leadership.

Traxis launches magazine to spotli The Founder of Traxis Africa Magazine, Mrs Ijeoma Okonkwo, has reaffirmed her commitment to amplifying African entrepreneurial success stories. Okonkwo spoke at the magazine’s launch in Lagos, saying it was time the world recognised positive narratives about African businesses and innovation. She said the publication emerged from a passion to promote entrepreneurs whose hard work and creativity often go unnoticed beyond temporary events. According to her, years of organising exhibitions showed that many small businesses lacked sustained visibility and long-term growth opportunities. “For years, entrepreneurs worked tirelessly, showcased products for a few days, then returned to obscurity. I knew more had to be done,” she said. She noted that Traxis Africa Magazine was created to tell authentic business stories and connect African entrepreneurs with investors and global markets. Okonkwo described Nigeria as a blessed nation with tremendous talent and resources, urging citizens to counter negative narratives with stories of excellence. “In our challenges, we must remember we have greatness. The world wants what we have. We must support those creating real value,” she said. She added that investment goes beyond finance, stressing the importance of ideas, networks and opportunities in building a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem. The maiden edition of Traxis Africa Magazine features founders including Adeyinka Tekenah of Happy Coffee Nigeria and Chibueze Obinwanne of The Milk Boosters. Tekenah, Chief Happiness Officer at Happy Coffee, said the platform would help project genuine African success stories to wider audiences. She emphasised the importance of female role models, saying young women must see others thriving in business despite challenges. “Nigeria has amazing people, good weather and huge opportunities. Being Nigerian is easy for me because this is where I belong,” she said. Obinwanne said The Milk Boosters was established to support nursing mothers facing lactation challenges and reduce infant mortality nationwide. He explained that the donor milk bank, launched in April 2022, initially faced concerns but is now gaining public acceptance and support. “We have centres in Lagos and Abuja and plan to expand nationwide. No child should lack breast milk,” he said. He also called for better cold chain infrastructure to ensure safe storage and transport of donor breast milk across Nigeria. The launch attracted entrepreneurs, investors and business enthusiasts who shared ideas on strengthening small and medium enterprises in Nigeria and Africa.

Caring Africa, LASG call for inclusion, investment in care economy The founder of Caring Africa, Mrs Blessing Adesiyan, has urged Africans to elevate the culture of care across homes, workplaces and governance, describing care as the foundation that keeps economies running. Adesiyan made the advocacy on Wednesday in commemoration of the International Day of Care, in Lagos. Caring Africa is a pan-African organisation committed to transforming the care economy by shaping policy, technology, workplace standards, and storytelling. The event drew participants from government and private sectors, as proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly. In response, Caring Africa has launched the #StartWithCare campaign The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Caring Africa was established by Adesàiyan to promote care awareness for women, working families and economies. Nigeria To Mark International Day of Care with Bold National Campaign: #StartWithCare Nigeria will join the global community in commemorating the International Day of Care and Support on Oct. 29, According to her, many people often associate care only with hospitals or healthcare. She said that true care transcended medical support to include emotional, physical and social responsibilities that would sustain families and communities. “When we talk about care, we must understand it is the quiet neighbour of love that keeps homes together and communities running. “It is waking up early, preparing meals and nurturing others often without recognition,” Adesiyan said. She said that unpaid and unseen care contributed significantly to societal stability and productivity but remained undervalued in policy and economic discourse. “Care makes the economy run. Every morning, a parent or an elderly relative wakes up to prepare a child for school. “That invisible labour is what keeps our economy functioning.” According to her, recognising and rewarding care is crucial for sustainable development. She urged policymakers, businesses and communities to prioritise investments that would make care affordable, accessible and dignifying. “If we can care for our people, we can care for our economy and our future,” Adesiyan said. She called for policy reforms that would promote family-friendly workplaces, strengthen community networks and integrate care systems into national development agenda. “Every working mother, every father trying to provide, every teacher or nanny is a quiet hero keeping our societies alive. “Care is not sentimental; it is essential,” she said. The Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr Bolaji Ogunlende, in his keynote address, said that care economy must be seen as a pillar of national growth and social progress. “I am not here to simply celebrate care as sentiment. Care is infrastructure. “It is the invisible foundation of our economy and the true measure of our humanity,” Ogunlende said. He said that the Lagos State Government, through its THEMES Plus Agenda, was strengthening social inclusion, gender equality and youth development, while integrating care systems across all ministries and agencies. “These are not just words on paper; we provide direct services for vulnerable people, support families, assist the elderly and offer psychosocial help to those in need,” he said. The commissioner said that the state managed over 15 homes and institutions, including elderly care centres and correctional facilities, and urged greater collaboration among government, non-governmental organisations and the private sector. “Government cannot do it alone. That is why I commend Blessing Adeshiyan and the creation of the Creative Care Council. They will help to amplify the care agenda across Africa,” Ogunlende said. He described care as “the new oil,” urging that its economic value must be harnessed through deliberate policy action, public-private partnerships and grassroots engagement. “When families lack care and caregivers are undervalued, society pays the price. “In Lagos alone, the value of care work is estimated at N24 billion potential we can’t afford to waste,” Ogunlende said. The commissioner added that through initiatives such as Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs, the state was addressing disability inclusion, drug abuse prevention and mental health support to strengthen care systems for all. “As we mark this day, let us envision a Lagos where compassion drives governance. Care is not just a home issue; it is a growth issue, a governance issue and a survival issue,” he said. He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to working with Caring Africa and other partners to redefine care as a cornerstone of development across Nigeria and Africa. “Care is the work that makes every other work possible, If we can invest in care, we can build a stronger, fairer and more inclusive Africa,” Ogunlende said. Mrs Toyosi Etim-Effiong, the Chair of the Creative Care Council and Chief Executive Officer of GoodMedia, said the council was established to amplify the voices of caregivers and formalise recognition for unpaid care work. “Our role is to promote and amplify the mandate of care in Nigeria. “We want to ensure that care is not just seen as a nice-to have concept but as critical infrastructure entrenched in policy and workplaces.” Etim-Effiong said the theme of celebration, “Start with Care: Strong Families, Strong Workplaces, Strong Nations’, underscored the need to place care at the heart of national development. “There would be more productivity if care is taken more seriously. “Formalising the care sector will not only empower caregivers but also strengthen our economy.” She said many Nigerians were still unaware that caregiving, even within families, deserved recognition.

Egberipou emerges President as new Nigeria Squash Federation board take steps to elevate The Nigeria Squash Federation (NSF) has inaugurated a new board with Mr Wilson Egberipou emerging as President, while Mr Haniel Hadison emerged Vice-President, ushering in a fresh wave of optimism for the game’s development in the country. The 15-member board, inaugurated under the supervision of the National Sports Commission, is expected to redefine the direction of squash in Nigeria by prioritising grassroots development, corporate engagement, and enhanced player welfare. Egberipou a former player, is expected to bring his experience to bear by building on the successes of the immediate past administration by restoring Nigeria’s dominance in African squash and positioning the country for global competitiveness. He said the new board would adopt a practical approach to governance by improving infrastructure, promoting transparency, and investing in the youth. “Our vision is to make Nigeria a powerhouse in African squash and a contender globally,” Egberipou said. “We’ll deepen youth programmes, strengthen the national league, and ensure professionalism in all our engagements," he said Vice-President Haniel Hadison, who has been instrumental in developing young athletes across several sports, stressed the need for collaboration between the private and public sectors to attract sponsorships and revive interest in squash. He said the board would explore strategic partnerships with schools, clubs and corporate organisations to sustain developmental programmes, adding that inclusivity would be a central focus of the new administration. Also on the board is Tomi Falase the immediate past Chairman of the Lagos State Squash Association (LSSA) a strong advocate for grassroots development. Falase, who has championed several initiatives such as the 2022 International Classic and several editions of Prime Atlantic Squash Tournament at increasing representation in the game, said the new administration would pay attention to building pathways for young players to develop their skills from grassroots to elite competition. “We cannot grow squash without investing in our young players. “Our focus will be to create more opportunities for them to compete and gain confidence through structured programmes," he said. The new board also includes Dr Okechukwu Paul, Moses Helda, Iniobong Esuene, Taiwo Akinkoye, Adamu Erena, Umar Yusuf Aliyu, Ogujiofor Jerry, Durosinlorun Yusuf, Jonah Attach, Bola Esan, Sola Adekunle and Secretary-General Raphael Oyinloye. As the board settles into it’s responsibilities, emphasis will likely be placed on developing squash at the grassroots level by introducing the sport into school curricula and establishing regional training centres. The revitalisation of the national league should also be on the agenda, with plans to introduce a ranking-based system and incentives to motivate players. There is also an urgent need to rehabilitate existing squash courts and build new standard facilities across the states to bridge infrastructural gaps. The new leadership is expected to embark on capacity building through coaching and officiating programmes to raise the technical quality of the game. Corporate partnerships are projected to form a major part of the NSF’s revenue drive, with the board looking to attract sponsors by enhancing the sport’s visibility through media collaborations and digital storytelling. By promoting international exposure for athletes, embracing technology for performance analysis, and establishing trust-driven governance, the new NSF board appears poised to reignite public interest in squash and elevate Nigeria’s standing on the continental and global stage. |
LASG begins compensating residents affected in Oworonshoki demolitions The Lagos State Government has started paying compensation to residents affected by the ongoing urban regeneration project in Oworonshoki, Kosofe Local Government Area. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that some communities in Oworonshoki were demolished on Sept. 6, 2025, which led to a protest and the temporary blockage of the Third Mainland Bridge. Mr Oladimeji Animashaun, Director-General of the Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA), who supervised the exercise on Friday, said that 80 beneficiaries had so far been compensated. “We started the payment of compensation yesterday, and several residents have received their cheques. “The total number of people being compensated is 80. This is proof that what Mr Governor promised has been fulfilled,” he said. Animashaun appreciated Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his support and also commended the Special Adviser to the Governor on e-GIS and Urban Development, Dr Abiodun Babatunde, and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Urban Development, Mr Gbolahan Oki. He appreciated the special adviser as well as the permanent secretary for their coordination in implementing government policies effectively. Responding to allegations that residents were not notified before the demolition, Animashaun said that the area had been designated a regeneration zone more than five years ago. “Government does not just move into an area without due notice. Many of these residents have known for years that their community falls under a regeneration plan. “Some people deny knowledge, but due process was followed,” he said. He said the amount of compensation paid varied according to property type, ranging from N3 million to N5 million, while smaller structures such as kiosks and shanties received lower amounts. “Someone with a bungalow cannot get the same compensation as someone with a storey building. The payments were fair, and many residents were happy as they received their cheques,” he said. On government’s plan for the regenerated area, the LASURA boss said the aim was to create a well-planned, modern community with better living conditions. “Urban regeneration is about replacing unsafe environments with planned communities that meet modern standards. “That is what the Sanwo-Olu administration is committed to achieving in Oworonshoki,” he said. Also speaking, Mr Okanlawon Sanni, Member, Lagos State House of Assembly representing Kosofe Constituency I, described the payment as a sign of Sanwo-Olu’s compassion and commitment to human-centered urban renewal. “What we are witnessing today is not just about demolitions; it is about development with dignity. “The affected residents are being duly compensated, in line with the governor’s assurance that no one will suffer unjustly in the process of renewing Lagos,” he said. Sanni commended LASURA for conducting the exercise in a transparent and humane manner. He said the government’s plan was to transform Oworonshoki into a modern community with better housing, drainage, potable water and accessible roads. He appealed to affected residents to remain calm and cooperate with the government. “I understand the emotions involved, but Lagos is growing and we must plan responsibly. The ultimate goal is to make Oworonshoki a place where families can live in safety and comfort,” he said. Some residents expressed satisfaction with the exercise. Two beneficiaries, Mrs Chioma Idoko and Mr Taiwo Solola, who received N200,000 each, appreciated the government’s kind gesture. They said: “It’s better than nothing. We thank the Lagos State Government for the compensation.

NPFL reaffirms commitment to attracting partners The Chairman of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Gbenga Elegbeleye, has reaffirmed the league’s commitment to building a sustainable football ecosystem that attracts sponsors and delivers stakeholder value. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the media interactive session focused on promoting live radio commentaries for NPFL matches across the country. Elegbeleye spoke at a strategic media engagement in Lagos organised by GTI Asset Management and Trust Ltd. in partnership with the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN). He said the NPFL was deepening collaboration with media and corporate organisations to make the league more marketable and globally competitive. According to him, current reforms have repositioned the league as a platform for investors seeking visibility, credibility, and social impact. “We are building a league that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the best in Africa. What we need now is partnership and belief,” he said. Elegbeleye described the NPFL as a national brand with presence across all regions, urging corporate organisations to see it as a worthy investment. He noted that football remains Nigeria’s most unifying force and expressed optimism that collaboration among GTI, the NPFL, and the media would drive sustainable growth. “No other activity unites Nigerians like football. It has no religion, tribe, or gender barrier. Strengthening this ecosystem benefits every sector,” he added. GTI Executive Director, Nelson Ine, said the Nigerian Football Fund was created to revolutionise the domestic football economy through structured investment and accountability. He urged corporate bodies and individuals to invest in the fund, describing it as a sustainable model to drive sports development and economic inclusion. “This league spans 19 major cities and runs for nine months, delivering over 380 brand engagement events yearly,” Ine said. He added that no other platform offers such reach and urged Nigerians to take ownership of the league and its growth. Ine lamented past negative perceptions about the NPFL but said ongoing reforms had restored credibility, transparency, and commercial value. “We made the English Premier League popular in Nigeria, not the English. If we can grow theirs, we can build ours,” he said. Representing the FRCN Director-General, Dr Mohammed Bulama, Mr Istafanus Baba commended the NPFL-GTI partnership for enabling nationwide live radio broadcasts of NPFL matches. He described the initiative as a step towards reviving public passion for domestic football and strengthening national unity through sport. “Radio Nigeria has the largest reach in Africa, with 64 FM stations nationwide. No platform connects Nigerians like we do,” Baba said. He added that the network would continue to train commentators and production staff to uphold top broadcasting standards. “For us, football commentary is part of our national heritage. This partnership proves that the NPFL belongs to all Nigerians,” he said. NPFL Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi, highlighted a hybrid approach combining radio and digital streaming as the future of sports coverage. “We are ensuring fans who can’t attend matches enjoy live excitement through Radio Nigeria and the NPFL Live app,” he said. Owumi revealed that over 400,000 users already subscribe to NPFL Live, with millions of views, building a strong digital fan base locally and abroad. In closing, GTI Group Managing Director, Abubakar Lawal, commended stakeholders for supporting efforts to make the NPFL commercially viable. “If we don’t stand up for our football, nobody will. Investment is key to progress; criticism won’t build our league,” Lawal said. He assured that GTI remains committed to partnering with sponsors who share the vision of transforming the NPFL into a globally recognised brand. |

Nigerians have been urged to live good lives and leave behind legacies worthy of emulation so that their impact continues to speak even after their passing. This call came during the eighth-day Fidau prayers held in honour of the late Alhaja Mutiat Akib-Onigbanjo, who died at the age of 98, at Eko Club, Surulere, Lagos. Her children Alhaji Shakiru Adewale Momoh, Alhaja Shakirat Majekodunmi, and Mrs Morayo Amoke Afolabi described their late mother as a resilient, prayerful and disciplined woman who raised them in the way of Allah. “My mother lived a simple but impactful life. She taught us honesty, humility and the fear of Allah,” Momoh said. Majekodunmi, in her tribute, added that her late mother’s generosity and guidance shaped who they are today. “She was more than a mother; she was a mentor and a pillar of strength,” Afolabi said, fighting back tears. Islamic clerics and well-wishers at the event, who fondly referred to the deceased as Iya Sheu, described her as a devout Muslim and a philanthropist who touched many lives. “She gave without seeking recognition and dedicated her time and wealth to the service of humanity. May Allah grant her Aljanah Firdaus,” an Islamic scholar, Alhaji AbdulLateef Olanrewaju, prayed. Until her death, the late Alhaja Mutiat Akib-Onigbanjo was the Aare Adinni of Obitin Ona Opepo Central Mosque and Iya Suna of Oluwole Central Mosque, among other titles. She is survived by three biological children, several grandchildren, and many relatives and well-wishers.

3rd edition 1xBET: 1xcup Nigeria, Waidi Akanni redefine grassroots football Passion met with purpose when Waidi Akanni, ex-international and 1xBet joined forces to reposition the grassroots football development with a United believe that the future of Nigerian football lies in the dusty pitches and open fields where young players chase dreams long before fame or fortune. That conviction has once again found full expression in the 2025 1xCup Nigeria, a grassroots tournament that has quickly grown into one of the country’s most exciting football showcases. The second edition, which climaxed on Thursday at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos, saw Ikorodu City FA crowned champions after a dramatic 1–0 victory over ISAGT FC. But beyond the scoreline, the real triumph was the vision behind the event one that continues to redefine how grassroots football is organised, celebrated and supported. Akanni, who represented Nigeria in the late 1980s, has turned his post-playing career into a mission to give back through football. His passion is unmistakable in every handshake with young players, every word of encouragement to coaches, and every detail that makes the 1xCup more than just a competition. It is, as he often says, “a movement to discover, develop and display talent.” “The 1xCup has lived up to its aim of discovering new talents,” Akanni said after the final whistle. “Every year, we see fresh teams reaching the top. None of this year’s semifinalists featured in last year’s final four, which shows how competitive and inclusive it has become. "Some of the players from past editions are already playing in professional leagues home and abroad,"Akanni said. Indeed, the 2025 edition was a testament to that inclusivity and depth. Over four months of thrilling football, dozens of amateur clubs from across the state battled for glory, bringing colour and energy to local stadiums. The tournament’s meticulous organisation and strong community support reflected Akanni and 1xBet commitment to professionalising grassroots football. Ikorodu City’s unbeaten run to the title embodied the spirit of resilience that defines the competition. Their journey ended in a tense final against ISAGT FC a match that kept fans on edge from start to finish. After several missed chances in the first half, Emmanuel Okeh finally broke the deadlock midway through the second half. Despite being reduced to ten men, Ikorodu City held their nerve to claim the coveted trophy. Coach Washington Egor of Ikorodu City FA could hardly hide his joy. “I’m very happy because we’ve done a lot of work,” he said. “This competition is one of the biggest in Nigeria. You can see the atmosphere and the quality. "It’s great for grassroots football, and if more stakeholders support initiatives like this, it will keep many youths away from the streets. For the players, the 1xCup offered not just exposure, but also a sense of belonging. Striker Okiman Oji, who led Ikorodu City’s attack, said: “It’s all about dedication, hard work and focus. This is a tough competition, but we believed in ourselves and kept pushing. It’s a big step in our careers, and we’ll keep working towards greater opportunities. The spirit of competition extended to the third place match, where Dosu Joseph FC produced a stunning comeback to beat Nath Boys FA 2–1 and claim the bronze medal. The team’s display was a reminder of how much the tournament has improved technically and tactically. Individual brilliance also shone brightly. Uche Emeribe emerged the tournament’s top scorer with five goals, while Abdullahi Suleiman’s agility between the posts earned him the Best Goalkeeper award. Adewale Quadri was named the Most Valuable Player, and Ikorodu City’s Wellington Egor took home the Best Coach award. Each winner received N300,000 in recognition of their outstanding contributions. Goalkeeper Suleiman described his award as “a great motivation. “There were many good goalkeepers in this tournament,” he said. “Being chosen means a lot. This is just the beginning for me, and I’m determined to go higher.” In spite of narrowly losing in the final, ISAGT coach Tunde Omoniyi praised the competition’s standard. “We learned a lot from playing against Ikorodu City. “They’re an organised side with a good structure. We’ll improve from here and come back stronger," he said. From the packed stands at Onikan to the scouts quietly noting names on their pads, the 2025 1xCup reinforced one simple truth Nigeria’s football heartbeat still throbs loudest at the grassroots. For Akanni, it is proof that passion and purpose can build a legacy far beyond the playing days. Each edition of the 1xCup writes a new chapter in that legacy one where every young footballer’s dream feels a little closer, and where Nigerian football’s future continues to find its next stars in the most unlikely of places. As the floodlights dimmed over the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, it wasn’t just Ikorodu City lifting the trophy. It has been Waidi Akanni’s enduring dream a dream that keeps reshaping the story of grassroots football in Nigeria, one spectacular edition at a time, with a powerful brand like 1xBet the sky is the starting point.

Eko flavours celebrates Lagos creativity, innovation in culinary scene The second edition of Eko Flavours, a Lagos-based cooking show organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems, in partnership with the Culinara Group, has kicked off with fanfare, creativity and a spirit of healthy competition. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that top 20 contestants were selected from the 50 chefs that registered for the competition. With the theme, “My Lagos Story”, the culinary contest aims to spotlight local cuisines, promote food innovation and empower chefs in the state’s growing food ecosystem. The Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Ms Abisola Olusanya, said the show had grown remarkably since its debut, reflecting the state government’s commitment to youth empowerment and the creative economy. She announced that winners of the competition would go home with cash prizes of N5 million, N3 million and N2 million for the first, second and third positions respectively, in addition to several consolation prizes for outstanding participants “We have seen the level of preparedness from the chefs, they have wowed us all, like I told them when I met with them, making it this far shows that they’re destined for great things. “In years to come, we hope to see these chefs from this platform be renowned like the famous Gordon Ramsay, we can’t wait to see the greatness and their full potential,” she said. Co-founders of Culinara Group, Mrs Jenifer Odufunwa and Mrs Funke Adu, said the second edition was “bigger, better and more exciting”, describing it as a platform that not only celebrates Lagos flavours but also connects chefs to business opportunities. “We are thrilled to see how Eko Flavours has evolved from an idea into a vibrant culinary movement,” Adu said. “This second edition is not just about competition, it’s about collaboration, visibility and giving Lagos chefs a stage to shine locally and internationally,” Odufunwa said. Popular food critic, Opeyemi Famakinwa, a judge on the show, commended creators of Eko flavours for always selecting top notch chefs for the tournament. “I was here last year and I tell you for free then, quality of chefs we have on this show is the best, they always come prepared. “It goes to show that like most things, Lagos State is a pioneer, and in the culinary space, the same is being replicated. I expect the best food experience telling the authentic Lagos story,” he said. He also urged Nigerian chefs to explore beyond popular recipes such as jollof rice and suya, encouraging them to showcase the country’s vast culinary diversity. “We need to put other Nigerian dishes on the global map. Similarly, Mrs Ify Mogekwu, also know as Chef Ify, a judge on the competition, said that she expects nothing but the finest cuisine telling the Lagos story. “Lagos is doing what many states haven’t done investing in the culinary sector. “Some chefs’ careers will begin from here and grow to international levels. Cooking alone isn’t enough anymore; chefs need confidence, creativity and business skills to thrive.” “This is fantastic, I’m certain that we will be thrilled by different meals curated to tell a Lagos Story, it’s great to be back,” she said. One of the contestants, Damilola Afolabi, expressed optimism about her chances, saying she joined the competition to enhance her visibility and “prove that Lagos has some of the most talented young chefs in Nigeria”. Re-election: Voter registration crucial to Tinubu’s victory- Rep. Adedayo Rep. Adesola Adedayo (APC-Lagos) says the ongoing nationwide voter registration exercise is crucial to determining a favourable outcome for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections. Adedayo, who represents Apapa Federal Constituency of Lagos State, said the success of President Tinubu’s re-election project is directly tied to effectiveness of the exercise, both in Lagos state and across the country. This is contained in a statement signed by Mr Famuyiwa Stephen, Special Assistance on Media to Adedayo on Monday. He urged All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders to begin massive grassroots mobilisation for the President by ensuring that eligible citizens registered ahead of the 2027 general elections. The lawmaker, a former two-term chairman of Apapa-Iganmu Local Council Development Area, said he had been on the field with his team since the start of the exercise, sensitising constituents to register and obtain their voter cards. Adedayo noted that his involvement with the grassroots revealed a large number of potential Tinubu supporters, who only needed guidance to complete the voter registration process before the next election. He described Tinubu as a wartime leader in the mould of Alexander the Great and Winston Churchill. Adedayo said the President is courageously tackling economic and security battles confronting the nation. He appealed to Nigerians to remain patient, stressing that Tinubu’s ultimate goal at this stage of his life is to leave behind a legacy of enduring service and national transformation. The lawmaker recalled Tinubu’s early days as Lagos governor, noting that initial criticisms later turned into widespread praise after his strategic policies began yielding results across the state. “Mark my words, those criticising him today will soon hail him. “Asiwaju is a strategist who plans deeply and delivers when it matters most for the people,”Adedayo stated. He reaffirmed confidence in the President’s leadership, saying that the immediate task is to mobilise the electorate early and maintain close contact with citizens to explain government policies. Adedayo urged party leaders to take the voter registration exercise seriously, saying that if every APC stakeholder mobilised effectively, Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027 would be smooth and decisive. “The people are responding positively,” he said. If we keep encouraging them to register, the task of re-electing our leader will become easier. The process has already begun,” he added. |
Independence: Obanikoro urges unity A former minister of State for Defence and Foreign Affairs, Sen. Musiliu Obanikoro, has congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of the nation’s 65th Independence Anniversary. Obanikoro, in a statement on Wednesday, said the anniversary is a reminder of Nigeria’s remarkable journey as a nation built on sacrifice, resilience and the indomitable spirit of its people. He recalled that 65 years ago, Nigeria’s founding fathers reclaimed the country’s sovereignty and laid the foundation of nationhood with uncommon courage and conviction. “Since then, our country has faced trials that would have broken lesser nations. Yet, Nigerians have consistently shown the capacity to rise above adversity, to endure and to hope. “It is this resilience that continues to define us as a people,” he said. The former minister noted that Nigeria had sustained 26 years of unbroken democracy, while its diversity and the global excellence of its citizens remained strong pillars of national pride. “At 65, we must reflect on how far we have come and reaffirm our collective determination to build the Nigeria of our dreams. “Our task is to transform challenges into stepping stones for renewal and to place the prosperity of our people above all else,” he said. Obanikoro commended President Bola Tinubu for what he described as bold reforms and commitment to repositioning the economy, restoring global confidence and deepening hope among citizens. “While the path of renewal is never easy, I am confident that under his leadership, Nigeria is poised to reclaim her rightful place as the giant of Africa and a beacon of black excellence in the world,” he added. He urged Nigerians to embrace unity and shared responsibility in building the nation, stressing that tribe, faith or creed should not divide the people. “Our unity, resilience and shared optimism remain our greatest assets in the march to greatness. ” May the almighty continue to guide our leaders, bless our people and preserve our nation for generations to come,” Obanikoro said |
Lagos Attorney-General hails Supreme Court victory as fiscal federalism milestone Lagos Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Lawal Pedro (SAN), says the Supreme Court ruling on lottery regulation has safeguarded state revenues and strengthened fiscal federalism. Pedro stated this on Tuesday at a media briefing to mark his second year in office, describing the judgment as a landmark achievement for Lagos and other states. “The ruling clarified that lotteries and games of chance are residual matters for states, not the Federal Government,” he said. He added that the decision protects Lagos’ revenue base while entrenching fiscal federalism as a core principle of Nigeria’s constitutional order. In spite of the ruling, Pedro noted the National Assembly attempted to introduce a central gaming law, forcing Lagos to initiate contempt proceedings against the move. On criminal justice, he cited the prosecution of Andrew Nice in the BRT rape and murder of Miss Bamise Ayanwole as proof of government’s resolve. The attorney-general also highlighted reforms such as establishing revenue courts and a recovery unit that retrieved N1.5 billion in outstanding taxes from one bank. Pedro disclosed that several bills sponsored by the Ministry are before the Lagos State House of Assembly, including a new Tenancy Law and Marriage Registration Bill. Others include the Dissolution of Marriage Bill and the Administration of Civil Justice Bill, designed to cut trial durations to 18–24 months. “We processed 361 plea bargain applications and released 263 inmates under the Governor’s Prerogative of Mercy. The Lagos Criminal Information System now contains 78,000 cases,” he said. He said the Special Taskforce on Land Grabbers handled 982 petitions in two years, while the revived anti-trafficking taskforce repatriated seven victims from Ghana. On property rights, Pedro signed over 1,500 land transactions on behalf of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, assuring investors of Lagos’ commitment to ease of business. He also emphasised staff welfare, noting the provision of buses, elevators, litigation allowances, and staff quarters for legal officers in the Ministry of Justice. “Justice in Lagos is not an abstract ideal. It is a living reality shaping governance, protecting rights, and driving inclusive growth,” Pedro said. Permanent Secretary at the Ministry, Ahmed Oyenuga, delivered the welcome address, while Dr Babajide Martines, Director of Public Prosecution, gave the closing remarks.

Sanwo-Olu tasks Nigerians to remain patriotic The Lagos State Government on Sunday joined other Nigerians to mark the nation’s 65th Independence anniversary with an interdenominational thanksgiving service at the Chapel of Christ the Light, Alausa, Ikeja. The service, with the “A Rising Nation”, featured a sermon delivered by Rev. Paul Fadaniyi, who drew from Micah 7:8 and stressed that “thanksgiving opens the door for blessings,” adding that a grateful nation attracts God’s favour. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was represented at the service by his Chief of Staff, Mr Tayo Ayinde, who congratulated Nigerians on the milestone and urged them to continue to pray and work for unity and progress. “For six and a half decades, God has guided and supported our nation. Lagos remains a testament to what Nigeria can achieve when we collaborate in peace and understanding. "Let us all do our very best to pray for our leaders and to work in good faith as one family,” Ayinde said on behalf of the governor. He reaffirmed Lagos State’s commitment to policies that promote infrastructure growth, quality education, healthcare delivery and job creation, saying the state will continue to lead by example as the nation strives to fulfil its potential. Hamzat urges Nigerians to support reforms, instil values in children Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, has appealed to Nigerians to remain steadfast and patient with the ongoing economic reforms targeted at revitalising agriculture and stabilising the national economy. Hamzat, who represented Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the 65th National Independence Day Jumat service held at the Lagos Secretariat Community Central Mosque, Alausa, Ikeja, said the administration remained committed to restoring the country’s agricultural estates as a key driver of food security and economic recovery. Speaking on fiscal policies, he described the government’s tax reforms as a courageous move designed to reposition the economy. “For the first time, we have a president who has said democracy must thrive on taxation and the rule of law. That is why he is reshaping our tax system,” Hamzat stated. He likened the changes to an unpleasant but necessary medical treatment. “No medication for fever tastes sweet,” he added. On the removal of the fuel subsidy, the deputy governor noted that the decision was taken to free up resources for national development. “When the subsidy on petroleum products consumes more than the total budget for education, roads and healthcare, we must ask ourselves: are we going to be drinking oil? The essence is to secure a better future,” he said. Hamzat urged Nigerians to keep faith with the reforms, pray for the President and remain hopeful as the measures gradually bring down prices and strengthen the economy. He also used the occasion to counsel parents to actively instil positive values in their children and monitor their exposure to artificial intelligence (AI). “Train your children; if you don’t, AI will train them with potentially harmful consequences. As Muslims, it is crucial to take up this responsibility,” he stressed. The deputy governor further called on religious leaders to continue guiding their congregations towards moral and civic responsibility. The Commissioner for Home Affairs, Alhaji Ibrahim Layode, who gave the vote of thanks, urged residents to uphold their civic responsibilities and pray for the country’s peace and progress. The Chief Imam of Lagos State, Sheikh Sulaimon Abu-Nollah, along side the Permanent Secretary Mr Adewunmi Ogunsanya were among the dignitaries at the Jumat service. Which formed part of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary.
