Events › Lagos, NEMA Partner To Host National SEMA Conference 2025 by Agebab(op): 7:07am On Sep 26, 2025
Lagos, NEMA partner to host national SEMA conference 2025

The Lagos State Government, through its Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), in partnership with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), is set to host the National SEMA Conference 2025.

The Permanent Secretary, LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed this while speaking with journalists during a press conference at Alausa, Ikeja, on Thursday.

He said that the conference scheduled to hold from Oct. 2 to Oct. 4 in Lagos, had the theme, “Strengthening Sub-National Emergency Management for a Resilient Nigeria.

Oke-Osanyintolu said Lagos State was ready to showcase its emergency preparedness to the rest of the country, and exchange knowledge.

“We are proud of the structures and systems we have built to respond swiftly and effectively to emergencies.

“This conference will be a platform to share knowledge, strengthen partnerships and improve disaster management nationwide.

“We will bring together emergency managers, policymakers, development partners, security institutions, private sector leaders and civil society representatives from across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory,” he said.

The permanent secretary gave statistics of how Lagos State had been able to stay ready in the face of emergencies.

“Lagos continues to lead the way in sub-national emergency management, having managed over 13,700 incidents between 2008 and 2025.

“The incidents managed include fires, road accidents, structural collapses, hazardous material incidents, medical emergencies and large-scale disasters.

“Recent data illustrate this impact. Over 1,450 emergencies were managed in just the first eight months of 2025.

“More than 3,000 casualties were attended to in 2023 alone, reflecting expanded capabilities.

“Over 4,600 road and motor accidents and 2,400 fire outbreaks have been responded to since 2008.

“Targeted interventions for children since 2023 have improved survival outcomes.

“These achievements highlight the effectiveness of Lagos’ collaboration with NEMA, its use of technology and training, and its emphasis on community resilience,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.

He further said that the goal of the agency was to ensure that emergencies are attended to before it got out of hand.

“I want to urge residents to remain calm in times of emergency. Our goal is to reach every scene within 10 minutes.

“The golden hour, the hour between life and death is critical, and our personnel, technology and training have been built around that,” he said.

He reiterated the State’s emergency numbers 767 and 112 for 24-hour response, assuring that the Safety Commission audits the performance of first responders to sustain public trust.

“Lagos has become a clear lesson in sub-national emergency response,” he said, adding an appeal to Lagos residents to stay cool, calm and collected in the face of emergency.

“Call us anytime.

“We are passionate about what we do, and we will continue to ensure the safety of lives and property,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.

Similarly, Mr Tunde Mohammed, NEMA’s Lagos Zonal Coordinator, also commended the partnership.

“The collaboration between NEMA and Lagos State continues to be a model for sub-national resilience.

“The National SEMA Conference 2025 will further deepen coordination and preparedness across Nigeria,” he said.

Lagos nurses assembly reaffirms commitment to ethics — Director

) The Lagos State Government has restated its commitment to training and supporting nurses, not only to ensure quality healthcare delivery to residents but also to strengthen their role as advocates for patients’ rights and safety.

Mrs Olusola Aketi, the Director of Nursing Services at the Ministry of Health, made this known at a two-day Nurses Assembly with the theme “Nursing: Leading with Purpose”.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the two-day event was organised by the Directorate of Nursing Services at the Folarin Coker Auditorium, Alausa, Ikeja.

Aketi said the theme of the programme was “a call to action”, noting that nursing professionals were central to the health sector and must remain compassionate, dogged and dedicated to delivering qualitative services through the knowledge they had gained.

“Nurses are very important in the scheme of things in the health sector.

“We must continue to be compassionate and dedicated, using our training and knowledge to deliver quality care while leading with purpose,” she said.

She added that the ministry, in collaboration with professional associations, was intensifying efforts to curb quackery.

She urged nurses to be more committed to patient safety and rights.

“All associations of general practitioners, including nurses, are working together to ensure quackery is checked.

“We must also lead with purpose in being advocates for patients’ safety and rights,” Aketi said.

In her goodwill message, Commissioner, Health Service Commission, Mrs Ololade Fadipe, called on nurses to lead by example through advocacy, lifelong learning and collaboration to enhance their profession.

“Nurses should be compassionate, team leaders and purpose-driven. By learning continuously and collaborating, you can enhance the profession and strengthen patient care,” she said.

Facilitators at the event, including a lawyer, Mrs Yetunde Awe and Dr Oluwole Daini, who spoke on “The Nurse as an Advocate Championing Patients’ Safety and Rights”, emphasised that nurses were the heartbeat of the healthcare system.

“Nurses are not only responsible for providing healthcare services but also for advocating for patients,” Daini said.

“They are central to the healthcare system and must continue to champion patients’ rights and safety,” Awe said.

The annual Nurses Assembly is organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Health to build capacity, improve ethical standards and motivate nurses across the state.

Properties › Surveyors Seek Judicial Reform To Tackle Quackery by Agebab(op): 7:10pm On Sep 17, 2025
Surveyors seek judicial reform to tackle quackery

)The Association of Private Practising Surveyors of Nigeria (APPSN) has renewed calls for urgent judicial reforms to curb quackery and fraudulent practices in the profession.

Participants at the association’s annual professional workshop and luncheon observed that slow court processes and weak enforcement of existing laws were enabling impostors to issue fake survey plans and double land allocations.

They said the development was fuelling disputes that delayed critical infrastructure and housing projects in Lagos state.

The keynote speaker at the event, Mr Oluwaseyi Mapaderoun, noted that the legal system must keep pace with Lagos’ rapid urban growth.

“We catch people producing fake survey plans but they go unpunished for years because the judicial process is overworked and still analog.

“Without a deterrent, others will continue to defraud the public. We need reforms that fast-track land cases and punish impostors to protect investors and professionals alike,” he said.

He added that the association was already using technology to promote transparency and self-regulation.

“We’ve introduced a ‘Red Dot’ programme and a public online register so that anyone can verify authentic surveyors.

“We are also exploring blockchain to create tamper-proof records,” he said.

APPSN’s Chairman, Mr Afolabi Olaoluwa, said that the body was strengthening internal discipline while collaborating with the government to rid the profession of quacks.

“Our parent body, the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, already has an ethics committee. Any member found guilty of malpractice faces sanctions according to the severity of the offence.

“But we cannot do it alone. We must be patient with, and also partner the government as it develops modalities to reduce unprofessionalism in public projects,” the chairman said.

Olaoluwa also underscored the need to embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies.

“AI will not take our jobs; it will make them simpler if we learn to use it. With AI-enabled equipment, what used to take days can now be done in minutes.

“That is why we are organising training to ensure our members are not left behind,” he said.

Mr Ayokunnu Adesina, Special Adviser to Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Survey Matters, commended APPSN for taking proactive steps, urging stronger collaboration with the state.

“Lagos is investing heavily in digital land administration and expects surveyors to be partners in this drive.

“We welcome your blockchain and online verification initiatives.

“They align with our plan to make land transactions faster, more transparent and less prone to abuse,” he said

Adesina assured participants that the state government would continue to review policies and support judicial reforms to protect genuine professionals and investors.

“We cannot allow quackery to derail critical projects such as the coastal road, the new rail lines and housing schemes.

“Surveyors are the backbone of orderly growth, and we will keep working with you to ensure standards are upheld,” he said.

The APPSN resolved to deepen collaboration with government and tertiary institutions to produce well-trained surveyors and reduce dependence on outdated practices while safeguarding the profession’s legacy of precision and public trust.

The workshop had the theme “Building the Surveyor: Integrating Legacy Practice with Innovation and Corporate Excellence”.

NSR: Olotu hails turnout, tasks stakeholders on sustainable impact

– Dr. Funmi Olotu, National Coordinator of the National Social Safety Nets Coordinating Office (NASSCO), has expressed delight at the impressive turnout of stakeholders at the engagement on advancing the National Social Register (NSR).

Olotu spoke on Monday in Lagos at the one-day meeting convened to deepen collaboration on social protection.

She noted that several governors personally attended the event, while others, such as those of Borno, Cross River and Niger, were represented by their deputies – a development she described as a “powerful demonstration of commitment.”

“The presence we have here today shows that social protection is no longer a footnote in governance. Governors are here, deputies are here, partners are here – all because we understand that poverty eradication is a collective duty,” Olotu said.

According to her, the strong representation gives renewed hope that the NSR will evolve beyond a database into a tool for tackling poverty and inequality across the federation.

“My expectation going forward is simple: let us move from data to delivery. The register is not just numbers; it is about real households that need real change. If every state commits to using this tool transparently, then Nigeria will truly be on the path of inclusive growth,” she added.

Olotu commended state governments already leveraging the register to roll out conditional cash transfers, support small businesses and empower women and youth.

She also charged civil society and development partners to hold governments accountable to ensure the system benefits the poor directly.

“This engagement must not end as a conversation. We must leave here with practical commitments, timelines, and the will to sustain interventions no matter the political season,” Olotu said.

She described the NSR as “a living instrument” that should be updated continuously to reflect the dynamic nature of poverty in the country.

“We cannot build the Nigeria of our dreams if millions remain excluded. The register must be our compass to guide every intervention to where it is most needed,” she added.

Lagos advancing social protection through National Social Register – Sanwo-Olu

Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos says the state remains committed to advancing social protection programmes through the National Social Register (NSR) as a tool to reach vulnerable households.

Sanwo-Olu, represented by his Deputy Chief of Staff, Mr Sam Egube, said gave the assurance on Monday at a one-day stakeholder engagement with the theme: “Advancing Social Protection through the National Social Register.”

He commended President Bola Tinubu for repositioning the NSR as a credible platform for delivering interventions.

Sanwo-Olu noted that Lagos State had domesticated the operations of the NSR under its Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning.

“The register is not just a database; it is a lifeline for millions of Nigerians. I will like to commend our great leader.

“Lagos is aligning with this vision by ensuring the system is strengthened, transparent and accountable.

“The Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning is ensuring that all residents especially the vulnerable residents are registered,” Sanwo-Olu said.

Dr Badamasi Lawal, Chief Executive Officer, National Social Investment Programme Agency, said that the NSR was the cornerstone of social protection in Nigeria.

He said that subsidy removal, inflationary pressures and widening inequalities had made social protection not a choice but a necessity.

“We cannot achieve inclusive growth if the poor and vulnerable remain unseen.

“The register is not a static database but a living instrument of hope.

“Collaboration between the federal and state governments, partners and civil society, will ensure that no Nigerian is left behind,” Lawal said.

He added that aligning interventions with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu would guarantee fairness, accountability and impact in service delivery.

Ms. Funmi Olotu, National Coordinator, National Social Safety-Net Coordinating Office, said that the register had become one of the world’s largest social protection databases with more than 19 million households captured.

She said that the recent integration of the National Identification Number (NIN) into the register was transforming it into a more reliable and inclusive system.

“As of Aug. 31, 2025, a total of 7.68 million household records had been updated across the 36 states.

“From these, over 9.5 million NINs were recorded, with more than 8.3 million successfully validated,” Olotu said.

She described the achievement as remarkable.

“The real story behind the numbers is that mothers in rural areas, displaced households and young Nigerians seeking opportunities are beginning to see a government that recognises their struggles and is deliberate about supporting them,” she said.

In his goodwill message, the Alara of Ilara Kingdom, Dr Olufolarin Ogunsanwo, said that social protection should be seen as a duty of the state and society rather than an act of benevolence.

“Giving to the poor is not charity, it is social responsibility,” he said.

The royal father said that Nigeria’s social contract must be anchored on inclusiveness, adding that vulnerable citizens should not look like beggars but rightful beneficiaries of public policy.

“When government supports the less privileged through a credible system like the National Social Register, it is fulfilling its moral and constitutional responsibility.

” We must change our mindsets and treat social protection as an obligation,” Ogunsanwo said.

He said that the traditional institution would continue to partner with governments in ensuring that households in rural communities would benefit from social protection schemes.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event brought together stakeholders from development agencies, the civil society, the media and state representatives to chart the way forward for a more inclusive social safety net.

Culture › Social Register Must Go Beyond Numbers To Touch Lives – Sule by Agebab(op): 4:58pm On Sep 08, 2025
Social register must go beyond numbers to touch lives – Sule

Gov. Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa has called for sustained investment in Nigeria’s National Social Register (NSR), saying that social protection must go beyond statistics to transform lives of vulnerable households.
Sule spoke on Monday in Lagos at a one-day stakeholder engagement with the theme: “Advancing Social Protection through the National Social Register”.
He said that Nasarawa, known for solid minerals and growing potential in oil and agriculture, had made remarkable strides in building its social register in spite of challenges.
“In Nasarawa, we have captured about 570,000 households in our social register, translating to nearly 1.9 million people in a state of just over three million.
” That is real progress, but more importantly, it shows the faces behind the numbers people you can see, touch and feel in their struggle with poverty,” Sule said.
The governor recalled how his administration first focused on the most marginalised, including Almajiri and people living with disabilities, when he assumed office in 2019.
“We started by supporting about 4,000 of them with just ₦5,000 monthly.
“Some thought it was little, but I was moved when they pooled their stipends together in what they called Adashi, and used it to start small businesses.
“Some even made shoes for me, and when they brought them to me, I was in tears.
“That experience reminded me that social protection is not about handouts, it is about dignity and opportunity,” he said.
According to him, the initiative has since grown to cover more than 6,000 beneficiaries who receive N10,000 monthly.
Sule said that it had enabled female traders to expand businesses and enabled communities to build boreholes.
On national economic reforms, Sule lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to remove petrol subsidy and unify foreign exchange rate, describing the steps as bold and necessary.
“As someone who has worked in the oil and gas sector, I know the danger of subsidy and the distortions it created. Mr President has taken the right decision,” he said.
He, however, noted that the policies had short-term consequences, particularly for rural communities already battling inflation.
“In Lagos, you may not feel 32 per cent inflation, but in Nasarawa, Borno or Sokoto, it is closer to 42 per cent.
” That is why I opposed the proposed increase in VAT from seven to 10 per cent. Raising taxes in such an environment would have been devastating,” the governor said.
He commended the Tinubu-led administration and the National Assembly for reversing it.
“That decision saved poor Nigerians from further hardship.
“Today, inflation has dropped closer to 22 per cent. Without that intervention, it would have gone higher.”
The governor urged stakeholders, including development partners and the civil society, to keep faith with the NSR as a foundation for inclusive growth.
“Poverty eradication is not the job of government alone; it is also the responsibility of those who can afford to contribute.
“If we get this right, Nigeria will not just have a register; we will have a lifeline that restores hope,” Sule added.

WSO seeks stronger laws, grassroots education to improve safety

Improving safety in Nigeria requires leadership commitment, stronger laws, grassroots education and collaboration among governments, the private sector, academia and professional bodies, the World Safety Organisation (WSO) has said.

Dr Soji Olalokun, Country Director of WSO Nigeria and Executive Director of SafERR Networks, said this in a statement on Friday in Lagos.

He said that Nigeria still faced major challenges in safety practices, especially lack of awareness and a reactive culture toward safety.

“Our concern is that safety is still treated as a box-ticking exercise rather than a way of life.

“Many accidents we see are avoidable if there is awareness, training and strong enforcement of safety rules,” Olalokun said.

He said that WSO would host the eighth edition of its International Conference and World Safety Awards (WoSAwards) on Sept. 11 and Sept. 12 in Ikeja in an effort to promote safety practices.

Olalokun said that the conference would have the theme: “PROGRESS: Promoting Resilient Occupational, Governance, Risk Management, and Environmental Safety Standards”.

He said that more than 2,000 safety, security, health and environment professionals, policymakers, regulators, academics and industry leaders across the world were being expected to participate in the event.

He said that the conference would feature keynote addresses, panel discussions, technical paper presentations and investiture of SafERR Global Ambassadors, as well as induction of new members into the SafERR Global Institute.

According to him, a major highlight will be the WoSAwards Gala Night, where more than 32 corporate organisations and 31 individuals would be honoured for their contributions to advancing safety, security, health, environment and sustainability.

He said that participants would benefit from free training on emergency response.

Olalokun described the conference as a platform to educate, recognise and empower.

“It is not just another conference. It is a movement for change. We want to create heroes out of safety champions, equip Nigerians with life-saving skills, and promote a new culture where safety becomes natural for everyone,” he said.

He said that the impact would be both immediate and long-term, as participants would gain hands-on knowledge to save lives, while industries and communities would benefit from improved safety practices.

“A safer Nigeria is a more productive and economically-viable Nigeria.

“Reduced accidents mean less downtime, lower healthcare costs and a more attractive environment for investors,” he said.

TUC, JOHESU dismiss leadership crisis claims at Fed Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital

The Trade Union Congress (TUC), Lagos State Chapter, and the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU), Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital (FNPHY), Yaba Branch, have strongly refuted recent claims of a leadership crisis at the hospital.

They accused the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Lagos State Branch, and the Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), FNPHY Branch, of orchestrating a politically motivated campaign to destabilize the institution and discredit the Acting Medical Director, Dr. Olugbenga Owoeye.

Speaking at a press conference in Lagos, Comrade Adegoke Monsuru, who represented the TUC Chairman, Comrade Ekundayo Olugbenga, described the allegations as “a calculated effort to disrupt the hospital’s stability and manipulate leadership succession for personal interest.”

“There is no crisis in FNPHY. What we see is a clear attempt by NMA and MDCAN to dominate leadership through pressure and propaganda.

The same group opposed the implementation of the pharmacy consultancy cadre approved at the national level — a reform which Dr. Owoeye courageously executed,” Comrade Adegoke stated.
JOHESU Stands Firm

In a joint statement signed by the leadership of SSAUTHRIAI, MHWUN, and NUAHP, JOHESU FNPHY Branch reaffirmed their total confidence in Dr. Owoeye’s leadership, citing his transparent administration and unmatched dedication to staff development and welfare.

“Dr. Owoeye has consistently demonstrated a leadership style that is inclusive, people-focused, and fair to all professional groups.

His administration has delivered impactful welfare policies that benefit every cadre of staff,” the statement read.
Key Staff Welfare Achievements Under Dr. Owoeye:

- Prompt and regular promotion of staff across all departments — no record of stagnation
- Conversion of over 250 staff who acquired additional qualifications to appropriate cadres
- Full implementation of the approved Pharmacy Consultancy Cadre

- Regular sponsorship of staff for trainings and capacity building, both locally and internationally

- Support for internal development programs such as the ongoing structural training for senior staff preparing for 2025 promotion exams

- Consistent engagement with unions to maintain peace, transparency, and industrial harmony
On Salary Delay of Newly Recruited Doctors

TUC and JOHESU also addressed the issue of unpaid salaries raised by NMA/MDCAN, clarifying that salary payment is not within the purview of hospital management. The payment process is handled by the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF) through the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

“The IPPIS capturing for the newly employed staff was only concluded in May 2025. Since then, Dr. Owoeye has taken deliberate steps to fast-track their payment. Just last week, he visited the IPPIS unit at the OAGF in Abuja to push the process forward. Based on his efforts, payment is expected by July ending ,alongside July salary,” the unions confirmed.

They described attempts to link the delay to the Medical Director as misleading, unfair, and designed to misinform the public.
Call for Focus and Unity

TUC and JOHESU called on all stakeholders to prioritize patient care, professional unity, and institutional stability rather than engage in divisive politics.

“FNPHY belongs to every healthcare professional. No association has the monopoly to dictate leadership. We call on the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the Presidency to ignore these politically motivated distractions and support the ongoing transformation at the hospital,” the unions concluded.

"That is why the Adenuga family remains supportive of squash, and we hope this tournament becomes an annual event with even more sponsorship in the future,” she added.

Adenuga, who passed away in 2024, was remembered not only for his skills on the court but also for his commitment to mentoring young players and using sports as a platform for youth empowerment.

His legacy now lives on in initiatives like this tournament, which aim to nurture the next generation of champions.

The finals produced some of the most exciting moments of the tournament. In the Under-19 boys’ category, Kwara State’s Shuaib Giwa secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Lagos-based Quadri Yusuf (JHSF/LA).

The match scores stood at 11/3, 6/11, 9/11, 11/9, and 11/4 — a sweet victory for Giwa, who had lost to Yusuf in their previous four encounters.

“I am very happy to win this tournament,” Giwa said. “In the last four matches, he beat me, but from today I will make sure I keep winning.

"I thank my coaches, the Kwara State squash chairman, and the organisers of the tournament.”

In the Under-19 girls’ final, Awawu Balogun of Lagos University turned the tide in dramatic fashion, coming from two games down to defeat Mosturai Durosilorun (KW/Eko Club) 3-2.

The scores were 10/12, 8/11, 11/8, 14/12, and 12/10 a testament to her resilience and mental strength.

“It was a very difficult game, but thank God I picked up and won 3-2. I appreciate my sponsor and members of Eko Club. I am so happy,” Balogun said.

Zainab Ishola (LA) claimed the Under-16 girls’ title with an impressive 3-2 comeback against Aishat Abdulraheem (KW).

After losing the first two sets 3/11 and 7/11, Ishola dug deep to take the next three: 13/11, 12/10, and 11/5.

“It was a tough match, but I’m very happy to have won, i hope to keep training hard and win in the forthcoming competitions. I appreciate the sponsorship and support.”

In the Under-16 boys’ final, Friday Daniel (Headwaters) delivered a commanding performance to defeat Mitcheal Etuk-Udo (JESC/AKW) in straight sets: 15/13, 11/4, 11/5.

Organisers described the tournament as part of an ongoing effort to discover and develop Nigeria’s squash talents, while enhancing the sport’s appeal among youth.

With a successful debut behind it, the Eko Club U-16 and U-19 Squash Tournament has set a new benchmark for youth competitions in Nigeria ensuring that every point played continues the mission of the late Juwon Adenuga to grow the sport from the grassroots up.

PAPADEF donates N10,000 each to widows, calls for greater support

Lagos, June 24, 2025 - The Pa. Philip Akintoye Development Foundation (PAPADEF) has given cash support of N10,000 each to widows during a special church service in Lagos to mark this year’s International Widows Day.

The thanksgiving service was held on Sunday, June 22, at Act Baptist Church, Ogudu, where dozens of widows gathered in praise and prayer.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation, Mr Akintoye Festus, said in a statement on Tuesday that the support was aimed at easing some financial burdens and showing widows that they are not alone.

“This gesture is our way of saying ‘we see you, we honour you, and we are with you.’ Widows carry a special kind of strength, and we want to stand by them not just with words, but with action,” he said.

He stressed that the N10,000 given to each widow was directly transferred to their bank accounts to ensure dignity and transparency.

Two of the beneficiaries, Mrs Abimbola Akinyemi and Mrs Oluwayemisi Oyarinde, were full of gratitude.

“I am so happy and thankful. This money will really help me buy food items I’ve been putting off. May God bless the foundation,”Abimbola said.

Mrs Oyarinde, holding back tears, said: “It’s not just the money. It’s the fact that someone remembers us and sees us. We feel loved again.”

The presiding Pastor of the church, Rev. Adejumo Martins, also thanked the foundation for the initiative, describing it as a true act of humanitarian service.

“We appreciate PAPADEF for this show of compassion. It is rare to see such consistency in caring for widows. May God continue to bless and enlarge this foundation,” he said.
Festus used the opportunity to call on the government, religious and traditional leaders, and community members to do more in supporting widows.

He listed five key areas for urgent attention: awareness, protection of rights, empowerment, celebration of widow resilience, and an end to stigma and harmful traditional practices.

According to him, “International Widows Day should not be just a date on the calendar. It should be a call to action.”

He added that PAPADEF remains committed to standing with widows through emotional support, skills training, business mentoring, legal aid, and continuous advocacy.

“This N10,000 is just the beginning. We are building something bigger — a society that cares,” he said.

The event ended with prayers for the widows and a renewed pledge by the foundation to continue providing help where it matters most.

International Widows Day is marked globally on June 23 to draw attention to the struggles of widows and promote policies that support their welfare.

Int'l Widows’ Day: Foundation calls for legal, economic support for widows

Lagos, June 23: A non-governmental organisation, Pa Philip Akintoye Development Foundation (PAPADEF), has called on the Federal Government to urgently review and amend laws that continue to harm widows across the country.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO), PAPADEF, Mr Akintoye Festus, made the call in a statement on Monday in Lagos, to commemorate the International Widows’ Day.

The day, observed by the United Nations since 2011, is celebrated annually on June 23, to raise awareness about the challenges widows face and to push for their rights to be respected and protected.

Festus said that the theme for this year’s commemoration is, “Beyond Grief: Rebuilding Lives, Strengthening Communities, and Challenging Stigma.”

According to Festus, the theme calls for urgent attention to the many challenges widows face every day—especially in rural areas where harmful traditional practices remain common.

The PAPADEF CEO noted that many widows in Nigeria are suffering in silence due to outdated laws and cultural practices that deny them inheritance rights, economic opportunities, and protection.

Festus said that it was time to include widows in national development plans and policy-making processes.

“Widows are part of our society — they are mothers, caregivers, and contributors to the economy. But many are treated unfairly and pushed aside.

“Many widows are treated unfairly after losing their husbands. Some are denied access to property, forced into harmful rituals, blamed for their husbands’ deaths, and pushed into poverty,” he said.

Festus noted that thousands of widows are left homeless, jobless, and in deep emotional distress after losing their husbands, with little or no legal support.

“Some widows are still being forced to undergo harmful traditional practices or blamed for their husbands’ deaths. These things must stop,” he said.

He described the situation as a hidden crisis, with millions of women suffering in silence.

Festus said that although there are between 15 and 21 million widows in Nigeria, many of them remain invisible in national planning, data collection, and public discourse.

He urged lawmakers to harmonise civil and customary laws, particularly around inheritance and property rights, to stop the cycle of abuse and neglect.

The PAPADEF CEO said that real change can only happen when widows are protected by law and empowered to rebuild their lives.

He stressed that widows are not weak or helpless—they are mothers, caregivers, farmers, teachers, and entrepreneurs who just need support to live in dignity.

“Widows are not looking for pity. They want the right to live freely, to earn a living, and to raise their children in peace,” Festus added.

Festus also encouraged the government to include widows in poverty alleviation programmes, job creation schemes, and health and social services.

He said: “No widow should be invisible in our development plans. Their voices matter, their lives matter."

He explained that widows often face serious problems like loss of property, no access to healthcare or education, and are sometimes victims of violence or forced remarriage.

Festus said that many widows are hardworking mothers, businesswomen, and caregivers but are often treated as if they do not exist.

“Widows are not invisible, and their pain should not be ignored. We must see them, hear them, and support them,” he added.

Festus advised that widows should be given economic help, such as business support and job training.

He called for the provision of mental health support, grief counseling and legal services, especially in rural areas.

He also recommended the inclusion of widows in leadership and policy-making roles.

The PAPADEF CEO also appealed to traditional and religious leaders to speak out against dehumanising widowhood practices and help build a more compassionate culture.

“Ending stigma starts with changing how we think and talk about widows. We need to listen to their stories and support their journeys,” Festus said.

He said that the foundation would continue to fight for widows and ensure no woman is left behind.

“Let this International Widows’ Day be more than a ceremony. Let it spark real change. We want a Nigeria where widows are not shamed or ignored, but respected and empowered,” he said.

PAPADEF, is an NGO working for women, children, and community development, and has supported over 500 widows in Nigeria through legal help, business training, health services, and mental health support.

LASH inaugurates gender desk for women’s inclusion in procurement

The Lagos State Government has inaugurated a gender desk within the Contractor Registration Department of its Public Procurement Agency (PPA).

The Director-General of the agency, Mr Fatai Onafowote, said the move was part of efforts to empower women and foster their inclusion in public procurement processes.

Onafowote disclosed this on Tuesday in Lagos while receiving the Country Representative of UN Women to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ms Beatrice Eyong, on a courtesy visit.

He said the agency had taken deliberate steps to equip women with the knowledge and tools required to thrive in the procurement space.

“The administration of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu remains committed to expanding opportunities for women in the business ecosystem.

“Even though the governor could not be here in person, this visit aligns perfectly with his vision for a more inclusive and equitable Lagos,” he said.

The director-general explained that the agency began its inclusion efforts by training sustainability officers across ministries to promote affirmative procurement, later extending support directly to women-led businesses.

He further revealed that a Gender Responsive Procurement (GRP) Technical Working Group had been constituted to develop a policy framework for inclusive procurement in the state.

“We have already drafted the policy and shared the executive summary with the governor.

“Once signed, it will institutionalise gender-responsive procurement across Lagos,” he said.

Onafowote added that the agency would host another policy dialogue in two weeks to brief stakeholders on implementation strategies and the next phase of the gender-inclusive procurement drive.

In her remarks, Eyong commended the Lagos State Government and the PPA for their progress, describing the initiatives as timely and commendable.

“I am pleased to see that Lagos is taking concrete steps toward gender equality in public procurement,” she said.

She emphasised that inclusive procurement was not only an issue of fairness but also a catalyst for broader economic development.

“When women are economically empowered, entire communities benefit. What Lagos is doing here can serve as a model for the rest of the country,” Eyong said.

Also speaking, the Head of the Contractor Registration Department, Mrs Adeola Sanwo, highlighted the agency’s practical interventions in support of women entrepreneurs.

“We have supported 50 women-led home businesses through the UN Women Ideology Programme. Ten of them are now registered on the state’s procurement portal, and five have already secured contracts.

“This is a major breakthrough. It shows that women are not just ready to compete, they can win,” she said.

Sanwo noted that many women previously believed procurement was too technical or out of their reach, but the agency was working to demystify the process.

“To address those concerns, we established a Gender Desk where women can receive direct assistance with navigating procurement procedures,” she said.

She added that the desk had become a vital resource for female entrepreneurs, offering hands-on, step-by-step support.

“If the website is confusing, they can come in person and we’ll walk them through the entire process,” she said.

The UN Women team also visited the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs Rianat Onigbanjo, who reiterated the state government’s commitment to women’s empowerment across all sectors.

Verification app set to boost trust in recruitment, other processes

The digital identity verification landscape in Nigeria has received a boost with the official launch of Identigo, a technology-driven verification application.

The Executive Director of Identigo, Ms Olabusayo Soetan, gave the assurance in a statement in Lagos on Friday.

Soetan said that the app was aimed at rebuilding trust, strengthening security, and aiding decision-making in recruitment and other sensitive processes.

She said that Identigo was unveiled at Lekki, Lagos, in the presence of stakeholders from the public and private sectors.

Soetan said that the platform was developed to address the increasing need for preventive security, particularly in employment and document validation.

“This is not just a product launch; it is a mission to restore confidence in our systems.

“Identigo is designed to deliver reliable background checks that will help individuals, organisations and government agencies to verify the authenticity of identities, certificates, land documents and more.

“Identigo’s operations prioritise preventive security over reactive measures, enabling clients to access credible information to guard against fraud, misjudgments and other risks,” she said. (NAN)
