NSE Lagos Branch donates toilets, solar power, others to school The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Lagos Branch, on Tuesday made donations to three schools in Lagos State as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The branch donated educational items and facilities to improve learning and inspire schoolchildren. The items include exercise books, drums and solar systems. The branch paid for West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) fee for 16 students. It also built toilets and partitioned classrooms for one of the schools. During Tuesday’s visit to Akoka Nursery and Primary School, Yaba, the Chairman of NSE Lagos Branch, Mrs Olukorede Kesha, said that the society was committed to supporting education and child development through regular outreaches. Kesha was represented by the Vice Chairman of the branch, Mr Bakare Opeyemi. “We are here today as representatives of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Lagos Branch, to give back to the community. “We earlier visited this school, asked what it needed, and the authorities said they wanted a band set for pupils. “We have now provided them with a full drum set as well as exercise books and biros, ” she said. According to her, the society aims to make learning more lively and engaging for the schoolchildren, and wants them to remember that engineers contributed to their joy and growth. “This is something we do monthly, yearly. It is part of our commitment,” Kesha said. The Head Teacher of the school, Mrs Vivian Okeke, expressed joy at the gesture. She said: “The drum set will motivate the children to come to school early, pray and start their day with full of energy. “One of our pupils, the main drummer, always comes early and encourages others. Now they have drums to beat. I am deeply grateful to NSE.” She also appealed for more support, especially in terms of writing materials. “Many children come to school without books or even a proper bags. “Some siblings share a single bag and have to fetch books from each other during lessons,” she said. A Primary Six pupil, Master Victor Usen, said the drums and books would make him and his classmates to look forward to coming to school early everyday. “I am happy. I want to come early everyday and attend the assembly,” he said. At Bright Achievers Academy in Bariga, NSE, Lagos Branch, donated exercise books, partitioned classrooms with concrete blocks, built six toilets, and paid WASSCE fee for 16 students. The Founder of the school and Creative Director of Footprints of David Art Foundation, Mr Seun Awobajo, said the NSE Lagos Branch had been consistent in its support for the school. “The first toilets in our school and community were built by NSE, Lagos. “It also helped us avoid being shut down by education authorities, by building partitions for classrooms. “This school is a grassroots effort. We deliberately don’t seek grants or external funding – we want to test true community involvement. “If not for NSE Lagos Branch, we would have shut down long ago. I am grateful to them,” he said. Awobajo said that the biggest challenge facing the school was payment of teachers’ salaries. He said: “We can build the best facilities, but without teachers, it is a waste. “Minimum wage is rising, and retaining teachers in this environment is hard. Volunteers can’t replace trained educators.” In her remarks at Bright Achievers, Kesha said the branch would not only look at the academic needs but also personal and home-related needs of the pupils. “We have spoken with our spouses, and we would be mobilising support through them as well,” she said. A JSS 3 student at the school, Miss Peace Akpan, expressed gratitude for the support. At Eva Adelaja Girls Senior High School at Bariga, NSE, Lagos Branch, installed a solar system to provide regular power for the school. The principal, Mrs Soyoye Ibunoluwa, said she was very glad. “It is rare to find a solar system of this quality in public schools. “I am happy this happened during my tenure,” she said. She appealed for a school bus to help in transporting students for competitions. “Our girls do very well at both national and international levels, but we always have to hire buses to take them around. A school bus will help us go farther,” she said. A student of the school, Miss Omowonuola Adekoya, said the solar system would greatly improve teaching and learning in the school. NAN also reports that Kesha is an old student of the Eva Adelaja Girls Senior High School. She re-affirmed the commitment of NSE, Lagos Branch, to community outreaches to ensure better learning environments for children.

Lagos launches informal land mapping project ) Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos has launched a new land mapping project aimed at identifying and putting informal lands across the state to better use. Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by his Deputy Chief of Staff, Dr Sam Egube, spoke at the handing over of three operational vehicles to the Lagos State Informal Space Management Agency (LASISMA) on Tuesday. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that LASISMA is the state government agency responsible for managing informal spaces and regulating informal businesses. The governor said that the initiative would help the government to map and define informal land. He added that the open spaces and setbacks not officially designated for any use could be put to more productive and aesthetic use. “The purpose of this unveiling is to let the public know we are beginning a new mapping project for informal spaces across Lagos. “These are lands that were not considered part of formal development plan like incidental open spaces or road setbacks but they are still important. “We want to define what they can be used for and ensure that they are used properly,” Sanwo-Olu said. The governor said that within the next six months, a pilot scheme would begin across the state. According to him, the informal lands will be mapped, reviewed and their purpose determined by the state Ministry of Physical Planning. He warned against using such spaces without permission, saying the project was also a call to stop unauthorised use of public spaces. He said: “You are not allowed to use these lands as you please. “They must be formally designated for specific purposes. This will help us to organise the city better.” The state Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr Olumide Oluyinka, said that the project was part of efforts to improve the environment of Lagos and better manage the state’s limited land resources. “Our land is our oil; so, we must make the best use of every space, even those not formally developed. ” Informal lands may be temporary, but we must know who is using them and for what purpose, as well as ensure they contribute value to the city,” he added. He said that the state would still allow legitimate operations such as parks or transport hubs on informal lands but would regulate them properly and require payment for their use. The commissioner explained that the goal was not to evict people but to ensure better organisation, increased safety and revenue generation for the state. The Special Adviser to Lagos State Governor on e-GIS and Urban Development, Dr Olajide Babatunde, said that the project would end arbitrary use of land and bring order to how public spaces would be used. “With this project, everyone will know what each space is meant for, so you won’t have someone trying to install a mast on a space meant to be a bus stop,” Babatunde said. The General Manager of LASISMA, Mr Dasisi Osho, expressed gratitude to the governor for providing the agency with three vehicles to support the its operations. He said: “These vehicles and tools will help us to move faster and work better. “We thank the governor for his support, and promise to put every square metre of Lagos land to the best possible use.” Osho said that LASISMA remained committed to transforming informal spaces across the state to benefit the residents and support the government’s broader development goals.

NEWS ANALYSIS: Infrastructure development: New dawn for Lagos under Tinubu administration News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) The past two years of President Bola Tinubu’s administration recorded robust interventions in the rehabilitation of ageing and ailing federal bridges and roads in Lagos State. The interventions, driven by the Minister of Works, Sen. Dave Umahi, are focused on repairing key bridges, improving roads, and constructing more to make life easier and safer for millions of people living and moving around Lagos. Work is ongoing on the Third Mainland Bridge, where major repairs have been done and street lights and closed-circuit television cameras installed to monitor traffic and improve safety and security. The 11.8km-long Third Mainland Bridge is the longest of three road bridges crossing Lagos Lagoon. It connects the commercial district of Lagos Island to the mainland section of the city. The repair is a relief to Lagos residents. The Tinubu administration also intervened in the repair of the Independence Bridge after a part of it collapsed. The administration is also fixing Eko, Carter and Cowry bridges to strengthen their structures and remove illegal settlements under them. Recently, Umahi ordered the demolition of illegal structures beneath the Iddo Bridge to pave way for its rebuilding. A contract was signed in 2024 for the rebuilding of the bridge. The 550m Iddo Bridge has, over the years, become unsafe due to activities inside the illegal structures, including shops and shanties. According to the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Mrs Olukorede Kesha, evaluation of the bridge revealed defects in some spans. Kesha said in February that it would take about six months for the bridge’s three major defective spans to be repaired since the repairs would involve breaking down the spans and recasting them. The Tinubu administration, under its Renewed Hope Agenda, has also done much in reconstructing the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, making transport easy in the ever-busy expressway. In October, 2024, the Tinubu administration unveiled the dualisation of the 1,068km Badagry-Sokoto Highway. The road, which starts from Illela Town in Illela Local Government Area of Sokoto State, is expected to pass through six states – Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Ogun before terminating at the ancient town of Badagry in Lagos State. At the flag-off ceremony, Tinubu, who was represented by the Governor of Sokoto State, Ahmed Aliyu, described the project as very dear to his heart. Tinubu is set to inaugurate a section of his administration’s landmark project, the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. According to Umahi, Tinubu will inaugurate a 30km stretch of the highway – over 70 per cent completed portion of Section One of the coastal highway – on May 31. On the corridor, there are some lands that have been acquired for tourism, industries, factories and housing estates. “These are the road architecture that you are going to receive on this highway,’’ Umahi said during an inspection tour of the highway project. Analysts are convinced that these bridge and road projects will significantly transform Nigeria by improving safety and security, reducing travel time and traffic congestion, boosting commerce and the general economy, and creating jobs. Although they expressed concerns about the associated challenges, such as traffic nightmares during road reconstructions and loss of means of livelihood by those displaced under bridges and right-of-way of roads, the analysts strongly believe that the renewed focus on infrastructure development is a step in the right direction. According to them, the Tinubu administration has demonstrated commitment to rebuilding both road infrastructure and public trust. “It is not just about concrete and steel. It is about restoring confidence, improving lives and giving Nigerians real, lasting hope,’’ a journalist, Mrs Nkechi Ugwa, says. Mrs Nimot Muili, Chairman of the Nigeria Society of Engineers, Ikeja Branch, also believes the projects will significantly boost economic growth by making trade, commerce and investment easier, thereby improving lives. She is particularly delighted that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project offers valuable learning opportunities for engineers at all levels and showcases excellent teamwork among professionals. “Nigerian engineers are doing very well, and we can do better,” she says. On the choice of materials for the constructions, Mr Kunle Awobodu, a former President of the Nigerian Institute of Building, is satisfied with the use of concrete for the coastal highway construction. He explains that concrete is more durable than asphalt, especially in areas where water poses a threat. “Water is a major threat to asphalt roads while concrete is more resistant to its damaging effects,” he argues, adding that both require a strong base. Mr Olumide Adewebi, the immediate past Vice-President International of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, supports the use of concrete in constructing highways, noting its suitability for roads with heavy traffic. According to him, concrete will better withstand daily wear and tear from numerous vehicles and prevent potholes. Adewebi praises Umahi for effective inspection of the projects, saying that the minister’s background as a seasoned engineer has a positive impact on the implementation of the projects. At a recent stakeholder engagement on the coastal highway project, managers of major economic hubs, including the Lekki Free Zone and Lagos Free Zone, showed support for the project, praising the Federal Government for its swift response to their concerns about it. They are optimistic that the road infrastructure will attract investments and ensure smooth movement of goods in and out of the zones. During an inspection tour of the Shoreline Protection project at Marina and Section One of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the House of Representatives Committee on Works gave the projects a pass mark. The Chairman of the committee, Mr Akin Alabi, expressed satisfaction with both projects. According to Alabi, the Shoreline Protection project is a crucial intervention to safeguard vital assets such as the Lagos Blue Line Rail and Outer Marina Road. He is also delighted at the quality and pace of work on the coastal highway. Analysts urge the Tinubu administration to intensify efforts in road infrastructure development in Lagos and other parts of Nigeria to rebuild public trust and renew the hope of Nigerians. |
Computer Village inaugurates biometric registration to curb crime, boost investors’ confidence The leadership of the Ikeja Computer Village in Lagos has begun a biometric registration and enumeration exercise to sanitise the market, curb criminal activity, and restore investors’ confidence. The Leader of the market women (Iyaloja) at the Computer Village, Mrs Abisola Azeez, said in a news conference in Lagos that the exercise was part of a broader rebranding effort to address issues like phone snatching, fraudulent technicians and substandard goods. Azeez said that the market’s leadership announced the move after a recent security incident led the Lagos State Task Force to consider a complete shutdown of the village. She said that the market representatives intervened to safeguard legitimate traders. According to the Iyaloja, under the new rules, only registered vendors with Identification cards displayed at their stalls will be allowed to operate within the market. “Approved street setups will be limited to plastic chairs, show glasses, and umbrellas, while wooden structures and open flames are banned to reduce fire hazards,’’ she said. The Leader of the market men (Babaloja) in the Village, Adeniyi Olasoji, said that the market’s damaged image needed to be redeemed. Olasoji emphasised the need for new security measures such as CCTV, emergency alert systems, and increased collaboration with law enforcement. The other leaders at the conference include Prince Tony Nwakeze, Ralph Chibuzor, Ben Onuorah, Mr. Nofiu Akinsanya and Mr. Ikani Tony. They affirmed that the registration and enumeration move was essential for transforming the Computer Village into a structured, globally competitive digital hub. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the registration would be completed within two months, after which only verified traders would be allowed to operate in the Computer Village. |
Sanwo-Olu Sponsors Over 143 Festivals, Spends N8.5bn in One Year – Commissioner The Lagos State Government has disclosed that it sponsored over 143 festivals and events in the past year, spending approximately N8.5 billion to reshape the state’s creative and tourism landscape. The Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs Toke Benson-Awoyinka, made the revelation during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing held at the Baguda Kalto Press Centre, Alausa, Ikeja, marking Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second year in office for his second term. She stated that the Ministry, through its Creative Arts Department, spent about N8,475,238,265 to sponsor the festivals. According to her, the Ministry is a key driver in developing and promoting policies that harness Lagos’s vibrant culture, rich heritage, and thriving hospitality sector. She said the Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture, alongside the Lagos State Film and Video Censors Board, had supported these efforts. “In the past year, we expanded our reach, deepened partnerships locally and internationally, and implemented initiatives that not only highlight the beauty and diversity of Lagos but also empower youth and creative entrepreneurs,” she said. The Commissioner noted that the Ministry prioritised regular engagement with stakeholders to assess the state of tourism and identify opportunities for government support. Over 124 creative stakeholders received endorsement letters to aid sponsorship efforts. “This investment reflects our commitment to positioning Lagos as Africa’s creative and entertainment hub,” she said, adding that initiatives supported include community festivals, cultural exhibitions, entertainment events, fashion weeks, art displays, youth empowerment platforms, and global tourism summits. These initiatives contribute to cultural preservation, economic growth, job creation, and media visibility, further reinforcing Lagos as a dynamic cultural destination. She listed sponsored events such as the Brazilian Descendant Arts & Culture Association (BDACA), Lagos Shopping Festival, Twin Fest Africana, Groove and Food Festival, Nigeria Soup Festival, TM Perfume Launch, and Sango World Festival. Others include the Kenny Saint Ogungbe Concert, Go Culture, Ede Mi Asa Mi Festival, Africa Fashion Designers Award, NCCH Adire & Food Festival, Wear Nigeria Fashion Exhibition, Night of Tribute for Late Dejumo Lewis, Kurunmi: The Stage Play, and Inter-Schools Cultural Quiz. She explained that these investments align with the fifth pillar of the THEMES Plus Agenda, focusing on “Entertainment and Tourism” as a key driver of economic diversification and youth empowerment. One notable revival was the Fanti Carnival in April 2025 at Remembrance Arcade, Lagos Island, which celebrated Afro-Brazilian heritage and drew thousands of local and international tourists. The Commissioner said the government also undertook the restoration of 30 heritage monuments, with 11 completed, including Nigeria’s first post office in Epe, the Agia Tree Cenotaph in Badagry, and the Door of Return. She added that efforts were ongoing to rebuild cultural infrastructure, including the Lagos Theatre in Oregun, destroyed during the #EndSARS protests in 2020. She highlighted the November 2024 launch of the J. Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History, which hosted prominent guests such as Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden and American cultural delegations. “Lagos is on the global map. From hosting BBC Studios executives to engaging with CNN’s Richard Quest and World Tourism leaders, our message is clear Lagos is open for global tourism and investment.” Benson-Awoyinka said the Ministry partnered with leading creative academies Del-York Creative Academy, EbonyLife Creative Academy, and the African Film Academy to train over 10,000 youths in film production, animation, screenwriting, and sound design. Through the Skill-Up Lagos initiative, 50 youths were trained in traditional basket weaving. A new collaboration with international music labels like Empire launched the African Music Next Talent Hunt to discover future music stars. “Our aim is to use the creative sector to create jobs, reduce youth unemployment, and build sustainable careers,” she said. The Ministry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice, is also enforcing new regulations to improve safety and sustainability at beaches. Key assets like Topo Island, Ilashe Beach Resort, and Akodo Beach have been recovered for development. A statewide hotel registration platform has been launched at https://lasgtourism.com, requiring all hospitality operators to register and display their certificates. The Lagos State Film and Video Censors Board issued over 1,100 permits to filmmakers and participated in digital content regulation forums to uphold industry standards. Highlighting economic impacts, the 2024 Greater Lagos Fiesta, headlined by stars such as Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Tiwa Savage, culminated in a New Year countdown at Tafawa Balewa Square. “The Fiesta attracted thousands of tourists and boosted local businesses,” she said. The Lagos Shopping Festival, held at Onikan Stadium, drew over 50,000 visitors and hosted 400 vendors, showcasing the synergy between tourism, culture, and commerce. “Lagos is not just a destination—it is a cultural awakening. The Fanti Carnival embodies a living history that celebrates resilience,” she said. The Sanwo-Olu administration, she said, remains committed to cultural preservation, education, and promoting Lagos as a destination rich in heritage and pride. Governor Sanwo-Olu received a Special Recognition Award at The Headies 2025 for his support of the creative industry. The Commissioner added that Lagos was also honoured in San Francisco, where she received a Special Recognition Award for visionary leadership. “This reaffirmed the Sister-State relationship between Lagos and California, focused on deepening cultural, creative, innovation, and tourism ties,” she said, noting that the recognition highlights Lagos’s rising global influence. She also cited strategic partnerships, including with BBC Studios to elevate Lagos storytelling, the Greater Lagos Rising Tour, promotion of animation, and support for the Badagry International Film Festival. “I am committed to ensuring Lagos is recognised for its rich heritage and the brilliance of its people. This BBC partnership reflects our ambition to make Lagos Africa’s storytelling capital,” she said. She added that the Lagos Shopping Festival is poised to become a permanent fixture on the global retail tourism calendar, setting a new benchmark for experiential city-led retailing. In his remarks, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotoso, described the Ministry of Tourism as dear to the governor. “Wherever this ministry moves, Lagos moves. It has revived culture and tourism to the benefit of Lagos, Nigeria, and the Black race,” Omotoso said. |

Dangote reaffirms commitment to empowering Nigerian engineers, urges investment in local capacity Africa’s richest man and industrialist, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, has reiterated his commitment to empowering Nigerian engineers and building local capacity through large-scale industrial projects. Dangote made this known while receiving a delegation from the Lagos Branch of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), at the Dangote Petroleum Refinery on Monday, in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos. Speaking during the visit, Dangote said that the scale of the refinery project defied even their own initial expectations. He said: “Honestly, if we had fully understood the magnitude and challenges involved, we may not have even attempted it. “But it’s because we didn’t know what we were doing initially and that courage, or maybe naivety is what got us this far.” He noted that the refinery was designed to handle massive volumes, with up to 600 product vessels and about 240 crude oil tankers expected annually. Dangote acknowledged the challenges faced during construction, including working on swampy terrain, extensive land clearing, and dredging 65 million cubic meters of sand from 20 kilometers offshore; all in an effort to protect local fishing communities. “We had to uproot thousands of trees manually. Sand-filling alone took 18 months. But we made a deliberate decision to preserve the livelihoods of those living nearby, especially fishermen", he said. When asked by one of the engineers how Nigerian professionals could be given more opportunities and how they too could “take destiny into their own hands. Dangote said: “We appreciate that. There are many more projects coming, and with them, we’ll continue to develop our engineering base. “Even when we don’t have enough jobs to give, we must still train people. Skills are assets — whether they’re used here or abroad. Like India or the Philippines, we want Nigeria to earn from exporting knowledge, not just oil.” He said that while the project initially planned for up to 50,000 foreign workers, they eventually used only 12,000–14,000 expatriates, with the vast majority of the workforce — including fitters, welders, and engineers — being Nigerians. “85 percent of the commissioning work was done by Nigerians. Not because I’m an engineer, but because they’ve proven to be among the best. "Today, we are our own EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) contractors. We are building this country ourselves," he said. He urged the engineers to see their visit as more than a tour, but a chance to align with a national vision of self-sufficiency and industrial excellence. The Chairman, NSE Lagos Branch, Mrs Olukorede Kesha described the refinery as an "Engineering Breakthrough for Africa" She commended Dangote’s initiative, calling the refinery “a first of its kind in Africa, if not in the world.” “The NSE exists to ensure continuous professional development, and this visit is part of that goal. “We’ve heard so much about the refinery, but seeing it ourselves has been extraordinary.” She praised the high level of Nigerian involvement in the project, noting that local manpower outnumbered foreign expertise significantly. “If we have more of this kind of development in Nigeria, unemployment and poverty would be a thing of the past. “We are extremely proud of what we’ve seen. Nigerians are taking the lead here," she said. Kesha emphasised that such industrial initiatives would not only help address domestic challenges, but could also position Nigeria as an exporter of both products and professional expertise. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the NSE delegates also visited the Lagos Calabar Coastal Highway project, describing it as “an enormous national asset.

Global Surveyors Day: Stakeholders task Lagos Govt. on collaboration The Lagos State chapter of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS) has called on the state government to collaborate more with the association, in order to build a sustainable community. The institute made the call on Friday in Lagos at the commemoration of the 2025 Global Surveyors Day with the theme: “Shaping the New World on the Wisdom of Surveying”. Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Olukayode Kasim, Chairman of the chapter, said that such collaboration would foster deeper understanding and enhance fruitful work relationship. Kasim, represented by the Institution’s Vice-Chairman, Mr Olukayode Ogundare, said there was the need for members to upgrade themselves, as builders of the society, by acquiring more knowledge that would engender transformation. “There is the need to align with the rest of the world to improve on surveying education and competence, upkeep the standards of professional practice and provide a platform for sharing the latest technological advancements, among survey professionals globally. “I must add, that surveying is the bedrock of any sustainable development programme, hence all meaningful development must mandatorily have its roots in surveying. “We, therefore, urge the state government to put in place, the apparatus to enforce the anti-land grabbing law. The insanity of thugs harassing people is unacceptable. “Also the Federal Government should as a matter of urgency, put in place, measures to alleviate the sufferings of Nigerians,” he said. Giving an insight on the issue of building collapse, he explained that one of the ways to bring an end to it was to ensure that the foundation was sturdy. “The frequent, constant and often collapse of various infrastructures across the length and breadth of the country could be attributed to not having the foundation right. “We must realise that surveyors are better equipped to ensure that the right foundation is put in place. “In NIS Lagos, we envision a well-planned and efficient Lagos, with adequate housing and infrastructure. “Also, there is need for universal access to employment and basic services, such as water, energy and sanitation. “We have consistently promoted socially and environmentally sustainable human settlement development and have played an important role in shaping our state,” Kasim said. He then lauded his members for maintaining standard and not dropping the ball. “Today, we join the rest of the world to contribute our voices to the global transformation, thank you all for working passionately. “I must declare that we support the government’s vision of a greater Lagos, Africa’s model smart city and we shall continue to respond to the challenges of urbanisation and the aspiration of residents,” Kasim said. |

NADDC boss calls for local auto parts production The Director-General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Mr Joseph Osanipin, has urged stakeholders in the automotive industry to prioritise the local manufacturing of vehicle components. He made this call during a stakeholder engagement meeting with the Association of Motor Dealers of Nigeria (AMDON) on Thursday in Ikeja. The theme of the meeting is, “Import of Used Car Dealership Regulation in Nigeria”. Osanipin said it was important for stakeholders to leverage on new innovations and manufacture component parts. “Your role cannot be overemphasised. This engagement began in 2024, and the auto sector alone has the potential to generate employment opportunities on par with agriculture. “So, because of this multiplier effect, the government is taking the auto sector very seriously. “If we get automobile sector right, it has the capacity to build infrastructure on its own. The auto sector also has the capacity to conserve foreign exchange. “If you look at the amount we spend of importation in Nigeria, the amount is overwhelming; all these put together will lead to growth in economy. “It will lead to growth in employment. Our role is to come up with policies, recommendations and regulations that will lead to the improvement of auto sector,” the DG said. Osanipin further said that in order to build a car manufacturing industry, it was important to establish a sustainable component parts manufacturing sector. “We have started with the development of component parts because we understand that growing this sector is crucial. “So, we have engaged the component parts manufacturers. We ensure that we push them into the limelight. “For those who are already producing, we make sure they increase their capacity so that they can meet market demand. We need your cooperation,” he said. The DG said that car dealers should look inward to standardise vehicles on the road and curb the influx of substandard vehicles contributing to accidents. He added, “Our mandate is also to regulate car dealers’ activities in order to combat the flooding of accidented vehicles on our roads. “There are some vehicles in Nigeria that are not supposed to be on the road. We can’t fight this battle without AMDON. “Also, we have to talk about safety, it is an issue that government is worried about and we need to self-regulate within AMDON. “We need to fish out some bad ones. There was a time in Sweden, cars abandoned were marked for scrapping. Some Nigerians went there and brought it in; they couldn’t get them into Tanzania, Ghana but ended up in Nigeria.” He urged car dealers to showcase Nigerian-made brands, stating that Nigerian brands were hardly on display in showrooms. “We need to start patronising Nigerian brands. I don’t want them to see Nigeria as a country where all stolen vehicles end up, the destination of stolen vehicles and scraps should not be Nigeria. “We need to talk to ourselves. This is not an indictment, it shows the responsibility that we have at our hands. We cannot turn our country into a dumping ground. “We want to address authentic car dealers and we are committed to working with you,” Osanipin noted. AMDON’ President, Mr Ajibola Adedoyin, keynote speaker, in his response, said that there was need for government to have records of authentic car dealers. According to him, government slso needs to punish those found wanting of approving the importation of scraps. “How are these vehicles brought in? There is need to re-orientate the Customs and there should be sanction. I mean all those saddle with the responsibilities of checking imported vehicles should be punished. “Also it’s important that we regularise. In Nigeria, anyone can wake up and bring in vehicles. We need to be able to check that,” he said. Similarly, Mr Bawo Omagbitse, Chairman Nigeria Automotive Manufacturers Association, called for regularisation of stakeholders in the industry. |

She added that the new era of economic modernisation is driven by technology, sustainability, and global competitiveness, “Today’s assembly speaks to our commitment to creating an enabling business environment that encourages sustainable investment, infrastructure development, and industrial growth. “These pillars are essential to achieving the objectives outlined in the State’s major development policy documents; T.H.E.M.E.S+ Development Agenda and the Lagos State Development Plan (LSDP 2052). “Industrial Policy (2025-2030) is a defining document – one that signals our readiness to elevate Lagos into a hub of industrial excellence, where businesses can thrive, investments can flourish, and job creation can be maximised,” she said. According to her, the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic exposed vulnerabilities in global supply chains and highlighted the need for stronger local production capacity. Ambrose added that, as the state navigates the challenges and opportunities of a post-pandemic global economy, industrial policy must be viewed as a strategic tool for economic resilience. “Lagos State has long been the cornerstone of Nigeria’s economic advancement, acting as the gateway to trade, commerce, and industrialisation for the nation and beyond. “As Nigeria’s commercial capital, the state must lead the charge in developing a self-sufficient, innovative, and globally competitive industrial ecosystem – one that leverages our vast human capital, geographic advantage, and entrepreneurial strength,” she said. Meanwhile, the Guest Speaker, Mr Reuben Bamidele explained the importance of sustainability, innovation and global best practices in shaping a resilient and competitive industrial landscape. Bamidele, also the National Programme Officer, United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) lauded the Lagos State’s commitment to policy-driven industrialisation. He emphasised that a robust framework, aligned with international standards, would foster inclusive growth, attract investment and enhance industrial productivity. “The Lagos State Government has been recording great traction in the area of facilitating the ease of doing business and implementing smart city, climate-conscious manufacturing and digital transformation initiatives. “More efforts should be devoted to promoting strategic public-private partnership in green industrialisation, environmental sustainability and circular economy, while incentivising Industrial Energy Efficiency (IEE) and Resource Efficient Cleaner Production (RECP), as part of key drivers of economic prosperity. “In this era of Fourth Industrial Revolution, the state must encourage industrial production that leverage technology, industrial information and data, research and development, domestic and foreign business linkages and certification of artisans,” he said. Similarly, Managing Director, Lekki Worldwide Investments Ltd, Mr Adeniyi Akinlusi, said that “capital is attracted to where it is welcomed and stays where it is respected”. Akinlusi described the consultative assembly as a bold initiative and a re-affirmation by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu that Lagos is not only open for business, but ready for business. “There is no African strategy without a Nigerian strategy, and there is no Nigeria strategy without a Lagos strategy,” he said. Also, Ms Moyomade Akinbusoye, Business Executive, Institutional Banking, Sterling Bank Plc, commended Lagos State Government for its visionary initiative, saying such commitment to support policies that empower industries and businesses strengthens the economy. “The refinement of the state’s industrial roadmap aligns with Sterling Bank’s strategic focus on industrial growth, economic empowerment and sustainable investments for national industrial growth,” she said. |
