" You know basically we have the U-11, U-13 and the U-16. But the U-11 players from Kwara, when you consider their age, they have been fantastic.

"The age is being dominated by Kwara and Lagos players and I think that's because of the facilities and the encouragement they are getting from the stakeholders in Lagos. They are attached to clubs," Ogunjimi said.

Family › Think Beyond Traditional Roles In Childcare – UN Women, Others Advocate by Agebab(op): 5:10am On Nov 01, 2024
Think beyond traditional roles in childcare – UN Women, others advocate

The United Nations (UN) Women in partnership with Event Nanny, has called on the public and private sectors to prioritise childcare and think beyond traditional gender roles.

Ms Beatrice Eyong, the Residents Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS, gave the charge at the Care and Economy conference on Thursday in Lagos.

The conference had the theme: “Unlocking Women’s Economic Empowerment Through Private Sector Investment in Childcare.”

Eyong, was represented by Dr Chukuemeka Onyimadu, the Lead Economic Empowerment, UN Women.

She said it was important to unlock women’s economic empowerment by promoting and investing in one of the most critical yet underfunded sector.

“I will like to sincerely thank Mrs Olufunmilayo Alero Gombe for her dedication and unwavering commitment to bringing this conference to fruition.

“It is our hope that this event marks the beginning of an ongoing dialogue, one that highlights the potential of the care economy to advance gender equality and strengthen women’s economic empowerment.

“Care work, both paid and unpaid, remains a cornerstone of our societies, yet it is often overlooked, undervalued, and underfunded. Globally, particularly here in Nigeria, women shoulder the vast majority of unpaid care responsibilities.

“In sub-Saharan Africa, women spend an average of 3.1 times more time on unpaid care than men, limiting their access to education, economic opportunities, and even leisure time,” she said.

Eyong further addressed the recurring problem of time poverty which had limited women from earning as they should.

“This phenomenon, known as “time poverty,” perpetuates cycles of poverty and limits women’s participation in quality employment and decision-making roles.

“Investing in childcare is not only about meeting the needs of children; it’s about creating an ecosystem that allows women to thrive.

“The link between affordable, accessible childcare and women’s full economic participation is undeniable,” she said.

She said that data had shown that women who were certain about their children’s welfare and security performed better at work.

“When women are assured that their children are safe, learning, and cared for, they can pursue career opportunities, education, and personal development.

“This freedom impacts individual families and drives economic growth as more women are empowered to contribute their talents and skills to society.

“In Nigeria, where childcare infrastructure is still developing, the potential for impact is immense.

“Studies indicate that investing in care infrastructure could create up to 17 million formal jobs, catalysing economic growth and lifting families out of poverty,” Eyong said.

She emphasised the need for decision makers, legislators to legislate policies that will encourage the care economy into law.

“This policy will establish a roadmap for equitable, accessible, quality care infrastructure. National policy on care aims to address the underlying structural issues that perpetuate time poverty that inhibit women.

“Through collaboration, innovation, and investment, we can transform the lives of millions of Nigerian families and build a more inclusive and resilient society.

“I urge each one of us to bring our expertise, ideas, and commitment to bear on the task of advancing gender-equitable care solutions.

“Let us create a society where care work is respected, supported, and shared.

“Childcare investments are, therefore, a strategic move for the private sector, which stands to benefit from a more inclusive, productive workforce,” she said.

She reiterated that UN Women was fully committed to advancing the care economy in Nigeria and beyond.

“UN Women is actively working with key partners, including the Ministry of Women Affairs, the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, and a diverse coalition of public and private stakeholders to develop a National Care Policy,” she said.

Similarly, Mr Abubakar Suleiman, the Managing Director Sterling Bank, said it was important to pass laws that woukd help implement the policies.

“We need to make this attractive to decision makers, we need to speak the language they want to hear, I mean talk about providing childcare for families will enhance productivity.

“Data don’t lie, let decision makers see the numbers. It should be a topic during electoral campaign, vote for candidates that will form policies around childcare and the wellbeing of women,” he said.

Mrs Funmi Gombe, the founder of Event Nanny thanked the UN Women for their support and partnership.

“By supporting the care economy, we are not
only empowering women but also creating a
more equitable and prosperous society for all.

“I will like to extend my heartfelt thanks to
Our partners at UN Women Nigeria for their
invaluable support and guidance.

“Additionally I’m grateful to our distinguished speakers and panelists for sharing their expertise and insights,” she said.

” Often, when these treatments are given, a lot of residents don’t come back for follow-up, for us to monitor their progress and act accordingly.

” This awareness is necessary because these are silent killers in the real sense of it,” she said.

Mr Gbenga Omotosho, the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, called on journalists to participate in the campaign because of stress associated with their job.

“When you go to any newsroom and pick journalists randomly, a high number of them are dealing with hypertension because of deadlines and all of that, but we need to take things easy.

“I’m urging residents to actively participate in the campaign and subscribe to the state health insurance – Ilera Eko – for diagnosis and

Firm commits to sustainable practices to boost food security

Adbond Harvest and Homes, an agro-to-home real estate firm, has reiterated its commitment to sustainable farming practices to provide affordable housing and ensure food security.
Mr Oluwagbemiga Adekoya, the Chief Executive Officer and founder of the firm, said this at an event to commemorate its eight years anniversary, on Sunday in Lagos.
Adekoya said that his company’s efforts would complement the initiatives of the authorities, thereby promoting sustainability and national development.
“We are revolutionising the real estate and agricultural sectors with innovative Agro-to-Home concept.
“Established eight years ago, Adbond has carved a niche by offering clients a unique opportunity to invest in agricultural land that will be transformed into residential properties, providing a dual benefit of food security and real estate equity.
“With over 1,000 acres of land sold to date, we have gained a strong reputation for trust, excellence, and transparency.
“The company’s agricultural projects, managed by expert, Agro Developers, are focused on maximising land productivity.
“Adbond’s commitment to sustainability and national development is evident in its efforts to promote sustainable farming practices, ensure food security, and provide affordable housing,” he said.
The CEO said that the real estate firm had made significant investments in youth empowerment in a bid to curb unemployment in Nigeria’s most critical demographics.
According to him, through its e-staff initiative, the company has enabled over 2,000 virtual staff from around the world to contribute to its operations.
He added that Adbond was actively engaged in empowering Nigerian youths through programmes that target the National Youth Service Corps camps in four states, providing valuable insights and investments opportunities to young graduates.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Adekoya’s commitment came at a time of economic hardship as Nigerians strain over the high cost of food, amid rising inflation.
Although the Federal Government has recently announced the suspension of duties, tariffs, and taxes on the importation of food commodities to mitigate the impact of the high food prices, housing deficit is still a major challenge in the country.
NAN reports that Mr Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, the Minister of Housing and Urban development, recently said that an annual spend of N5.5 trillion would be required to build about 550,000 housing units annually over the next 10 years to solve housing deficits in the country.

Baba Aladura Bob-Manuel, Adeleke, task church on good governance

The Eternal Sacred Order of the Cherubim and Seraphim (ESOCS) has called on the church to be more alive to its responsibility as a catalyst for good governance in Nigeria.
The Prelate of ESOCS, Dr David Bob-Manuel, gave the charge at the seventh edition of the St. Moses Orimolade Memorial Lecture, on Saturday at the Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The lecture had the theme, ” The Church as a Catalyst for Good Governance in Nigeria”.

Bob-Manuel said that absence of social and moral principles contributed to bad leadership, saying that the church should do more to promote the principles.
” It is common knowledge that the continuity of any organisation lies on its leadership.
“The church, as a religious and social organisation, has an important role to play toward social change and improvement on society’s value system,” he said.

Bob-Manuel further said that the church was expected to teach morals to help to shape the society.
” The church of God on earth was designed to be a place where morals are taught and life-changing teachings are practised. It is a place of character moulding.

“In all, Christianity as a religion, is assumed to be capable of influencing the society positively,” he said.
The cleric said that Cherubim and Seraphim Church would be 100 years old on Sept. 9 2025.
“Let’s pray to God to preserve our lives to see this day and beyond,” he prayed.
Gov. Ademola Adeleke of Osun, the special guest of honour at the lecture, urged the church to speak up against bad governance.
“Silence by the church is not an option.
“The church must speak loud about free and fair elections, dignity of all human beings, superiority of public good over private interests, respect for the supremacy of the constitution, observance of the rule of law and equality of all citizens before the law.

“As a sitting governor, I firmly believe the church should mount advocacy on what impedes good governance, namely; autocracy, dictatorship, arbitrariness, culture of impunity, self-perpetuation in office, suppression of opposition, corruption and failure to respond to aspirations of the people.

“I lay emphasis on the fear of God in decision-making. Public interest is our moral compass. I govern strictly under the guidance of the Holy Spirit; hence, I strongly attribute my successes so far to my submission to the direction and guidance of the Holy Spirit,” he said.

Adekele said that only a divinely-guided leader could deliver on good governance, restore public faith in politics, avoid self enrichment, resolve societal poverty, and observe the rule of law.

Reverend Mother Esther Ajayi, Founder of Love of Christ Generation Church, said it was important for the body of Christ to stay united in order to make demands from government on behalf of the society.

Dr Daniel Okoh, the President of Christian Association of Nigeria, who was the guest speaker and represented by Bishop Evan Onyemara, said that the church should speak up for good governance.

“The church should wake up, we have a huge role to play.

“In the current world order, the church must continue the difficult task of liberating society from spiritual darkness.

“Leaders, as the main agents of good governance, must be freed from spiritual blindness, because it is only then they can truly serve the people.

“My conviction is that people must be at the centre of the governance process. Policy making should start and end with public interest as the yardstick,” the cleric said.

UN Women sensitises religious leaders on gender-based violence

The United Nations (UN) Women, in collaboration with the Ford Foundation, has called on religious leaders to lead conversations on Gender Based Violence (GBV) in order to create better society.

Mr Ibrahim Nurudeen, Programme Officer for UN Women, made the appeal at a two-day sensitisation about GBV on Thursday in Ikeja.

” Religion remains the opium of the masses, we believe that religious leaders have a way of appealing to the consciousness of people. UN Women believes that religious leaders have vital roles to play.

“GBV happens everywhere, I believe it is easier to prevent something from happening than proffering solutions.

“Calling an old woman a witch is actually a GBV statement, elderly men are not called wizards,” the official said.

Nurudeen said that at the sensitisation programme, UN Women would identify the causes and the dangers of gender-based violence as well as how it could endanger humans.

“The UN Women understand that culture plays a vital role.

“We want female doctors to attend to our wives, but we say women shouldn’t get education because they are expected to be married.

“These are the issues,” he said.

Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the President of Christian Association of Nigeria, said that it was time for the church to play a more active role in curbing GBV.

” It is important to use Christianity to correct some aspects of culture that are working against the interest and the well-being of our society.

” We have looked at various levels of violence and have resolved to deepen our conversations around these issues and be very open and frank.

“We will use biblical perspectives on this issue to correct our orientation about gender-based practices so that we do not oppress women and girls in our community.

“At the same time, we don’t want it to appear as if it is one-sided because there are issues that appear to be against the men, we need to balance it,” he said.

Similarly the National President of the Organisation of African Instituted Churches, Dr Israel Akinadewo, said the era of silence culture about GBV had gone.

“We understand that this is a menace that needs to be eradicated. This partnership with UN Women is going to yield desired results because heads of congregation of different churches are here.

” These are the leaders that will get this message across, not just in terms of preaching, but proper implementation.

” We can’t continue to limit women. As a lecturer in a university, I can tell you that many ladies are at the frontline performing excellently academically.

“Male has imposed leadership on men even when the man is not prepared and lacks the intellect to lead,” he said.

Old girls set to celebrate FGGC Oyo at 50

Old Girls Association of Federal Government Girls College, Oyo, has lined up programmes and projects to give back to the school as it celebrates 50 years of existence.

Prof. Ayodele Atsenuwa, the Global President of the association, said this at a news conference on Monday in Lagos.

The college was established in 1974 to foster national unity.

Atsenuwa said it was important to give back to the school that shaped the lives of members of the association.

“Fifty years! From a modest first set of about 20 girls who arrived on that first day, FGGC Oyo has received more than 6,000 girls in 50 cohorts, nurturing them into young adults, who are well-equipped to take on the world because of the quality of education they received.

“Indeed, FGGC Oyo has continued with the tradition of excellence.

“Our alumnae (more popularly called Old Girls), can be found everywhere making their marks in various fields just as the current students are keeping up the legacy of excellence.

” In April 2024, our girls came tops as national champions in robotics challenge which qualified them to represent Nigeria in the United States of America,” she said.

Atsenuwa highlighted some of the association’s recent projects in the college.

“The N44 million legacy projects will be commissioned at a special assembly being convened on Oct. 19,” she said.

She listed the projects to include installation of solar panels with the capacity to power 11 blocks of eight classrooms each, an administrative block and a library and the kitchen.

She added that the projects included renovation and furnishing of a modern library, provision of solar-powered boreholes to serve five hostels and the kitchen.

She said the projects would be inaugurated by the Minister of State for Education, Alhaji Yusuf Tanko Sununu.

According to her, the three-day anniversary celebration, which would start on Oct. 18, would also feature a motorcade through Oyo Town.

She said that the rally would culminate in a visit to the palace of the Alaafin of Oyo, where the association’s members would be expected to be received by the Basorun of Oyo.

She said that a fund raiser and gala night would hold on Oct. 20,” she said.

Atsenuwa reiterated the association’s commitment to ensuring that the younger generation would continue to benefit from the institution.

“Our mission is to ensure that the girls, who come after us, have it far better than we did in terms of quality education,”

Motorcyclists call on Gov. Sanwo-Olu to reinstate union in Lagos

The Motorcycle Operators Union of Nigeria (MOUN), Lagos Chapter, has appealed to Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, to reinstate the association as the only recognised body in the state.

The Chairman of MOUN, Mr Taiwo Adetunji, made the plea at a news conference on Monday in Ikeja.

“In the light of the foregoing, we hereby apply that the Lagos State Government gives MOUN Branch in Lagos State a deserving recognition as the sole union for commercial motorcycle operators in Lagos State.

“We request that your Excellency should direct the Ministry of Transportation to fully cooperate and collaborate with MOUN.

“And also issue it every certificate or instrument of recognition to enable MOUN peaceably operate as the sole union and representative of the commercial motorcycle operators in Lagos State.

“In making this application, we are not unmindful of the possible existence of other groups within Lagos State that may lay claim to associating with commercial motorcycle business,” he said.

Similarly, MOUN’s General Secretary, Ade Ikuesan, said it was important to acknowledge the body that had the record.

“We hasten to stress and clarify, however, that as at today, MOUN is the only trade union allowed by the Trade Unions Act to exist and operate throughout the length and breadth of Nigeria as a trade union of motorcycle operators.

“Thus, our entreaty to your excellency that the Lagos State Government t should accord MOUN official recognition and relate with it as the sole and authentic trade union of motorcycle operators, to the exclusion of any other body of pretenders.

“Your Excellency, we humbly point out that the recognition and collaboration MOUN seeks with the state government will mutually benefit both MOUN and the state,” Ikuesan said.

According to him, we understand that the government has the primary duty to regulate the operations and activities of motorcycle operators in Lagos State.

The Legal Counsel to the association, Jiti Ogunye, appealed to the ministry of transportation to implement pre-existing law.

“Your Excellency, our client MOUN is ready, willing, and able to conform with and abide by all the statutory, administrative and governance requirements that it may be asked to fulfill by the state government to establish and sustain a cordial union-government relationship.

“MOUN submitted a petition on Oct. 9 to His Excellency, the Governor of Lagos State, to seek redress.

“In the Petition, we have submitted the following prayers, to which we expect sympathetic and just answers.

“The withdrawal and rescission of the letter of recognition and other letters purportedly issued to MOUN but handed over to third parties who are not members of MOUN to empower them to forcibly take over MOUN in Lagos State,’’ Ogunye said.

He called for “proper implementation of the approval granted by recognising MOUN in Lagos State, and certifying it for operation by issuance and delivery of letter of recognition and other instruments to MOUN,” the lawyer said.

He said on Sunday that efforts toward strengthening Nigeria were necessary.

Sanwo-Olu made the call during an interdenominational church service organised by Lagos State Ministry of Home Affairs as part of activities to celebrate Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day.

He was represented by the state’s Deputy Chief of Staff, Mr Sam Egube.

The event, which held at Chapel of Christ the Light, Alausa. Ikeja, had the theme: “Rebuilders of Broken Foundations”.

He said that the theme was very apt and would spur the citizens to contribute their quotas to rebuilding any broken foundations of Nigeria.

According to him, government alone cannot build or rebuild a nation.

“Each of us must be willing to rebuild our nation.

“We should not only focus on our rights but also on our responsibilities; that is when we can assist in total rebuilding of our nation,” he said.

The governor noted that infrastructure fueled economic growth and secured communities.

“We have embarked on transformative plans to boost our economy, creating opportunities for future growth for us all,” Sanwo-Olu said.

In a sermon, Bishop Jeremiah Adeyemi of CMAG International Ministry charged Lagos residents and Nigerians at large to be humble, united and focused.

Be hopeful, Sanwo-Olu urges Nigerians

Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has urged Nigerians to be hopeful, assuring that ongoing efforts to improve the econoy will soon yield results.

He said on Friday that the efforts would eventually improve the well-being of all Nigerians.

Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr Kadri Hamzat, said this during a Special Jumat service, organised to commemorate the 64th National Independence Day Celebration, at the Lagos State Secretariat Community Central Mosque, Alausa, Ikeja.

The governor emphasised the importance of hope, stating that citizens should not succumb to despair.

He said that the government was actively implementing plans to address the nation’s challenges.

“As a people, we cannot afford to be hopeless. We must be optimistic because there is a plan in place.

“We can discuss the merits of that plan, but the key point is that there is a strategy aimed at ensuring the economic stability of the country.

“We are a nation that imports significantly and is in the process of building infrastructure such as schools, hospitals, and more.

“It’s essential to maintain our economic stability. A plan exists, and without it, we face real problems,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, citing ongoing workable plans and the importance of vision in ensuring the nation’s progress.

He urged Nigerians to focus on facts in public discourse, warning that negative commentary could hinder national development despite the country’s intellectual potential.

“We must address why our country sometimes seems stagnant, even though Nigerians excel globally,” he said.

He also lamented the decline of communal values, attributing it to a shift towards western lifestyles.

The governor appealed to parents to prioritise their roles in instilling values and urged religious leaders to assist in mending the fabric of family units through impactful sermons.

In his goodwill message, the Lagos State Chief Judge, Justice Kazeem Alogba, encouraged Nigerians to exercise patience.

“Allah has blessed the country with a good, God-fearing president with noble intentions.

“Our current challenges resemble a deteriorating building in need of major rehabilitation, so patience is essential,” he stated.

Alogba urged citizens to be thankful for their experiences, noting that many nations had faced far worse circumstances without achieving unity.

“We have every reason to remain hopeful,” he said.

Chief Imam of the mosque, Dr Issa Abdul-Mujeeb, in his sermon, called for a collective mindset reform and the necessity of prayer for a better Nigeria.

He highlighted the achievements of the country’s founding fathers in establishing a thriving nation and expressed hope for a similar transformation soon.

The cleric warned that continued negativity could spell doom for the future generations, to greater hardships.

Also, another Muslim cleric, Sahid Ahmad, urged citizens to uphold righteousness and faith in Allah as the means to effect positive change.

“At 64, Nigerians must keep the faith, act justly, and remain hopeful.

“It is through these actions that Allah will ease their fears and fulfill His promises.

“If the people maintain their faith and adhere to the righteous path, then all their perceived difficulties will transform into peace and tranquility,” he said.(

Economic growth: Artisans appeal to government for support

The Association of Nigeria Artisans and Technicians (ASNAT) have appealed to state governments to support their efforts to contribute to economic growth.

Its National Coordinator, Mr Adeshina Akinyemi, made the appeal in a statement on Friday in Lagos.

Akinyemi said the association has evolved programmes to promote skills development and stimulate value-added processing and local production across sectors.

To achieve this, Akinyemi said the association will hold the Nigerian Artisans and Technicians Exhibitions and Fair (NATEF) from Sept. 30 to Oct. 2, at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja.

He said that NATEF would serve as a hub for establishing valuable contact between local artisans, technicians and international visitors.

“The main reason NATEF came at this time is to help adjust our memories back to those good old days when we were in love and content with our local products and services.

“Beyond supporting the economy, NATEF will open doors of opportunities for local artisans and technicians to showcase various locally made and unique products.

“It would promote our diversity as a multicultural entity and preserve our cultural traditions.

“NATEF is programmed to facilitate higher value-added processing and local production activities in Nigeria, which will stimulate economic growth and promote the development of local artisans and technicians,” he said.

Akinyemi appealed to state governments to sponsor the attendance of artisans and technicians from their various states to the fair.

He said their participation would enable them to showcase the state’s heritage and cultural diversity through exhibitions and displays of skills, services, products and crafts.

Akinyemi also called for patronage of local products to boost economic growth.

Fashola calls for collaboration between government, social clubs for development

Collaboration

By Aderonke Ojediran

Lagos, Sept. 11, 2024 (NAN) Mr Babatunde Fashola, former governor of Lagos State, has called for collaboration between social clubs and government on geeting feedbacks from the public and formation of policies.

He made the call while giving a lecture as the guest speaker, with the theme: “The Role of Social Clubs in Social Engineering” at the 50th anniversary of Eko Club, Surulere, Lagos State.

The former Minister of Works and Housing noted that most members of the clubs could give government useful feedbacks.

“When I was governor, it was mandatory for all commissioners and special advisers to be a member of a social club.

“This was to ensure proper dissemination of information because most clubs are made of family units representing different communities.

“I think many people will agree here that as citizens, we all share a common interest in certain things.

“We have a common interest in the well-being of our families, we have a common interest in the well-being of our community and our safety and security is a matter of common interest.

“In the past, social clubs were involved in the advocacy for the indigenisation policy that ultimately led to the creation of Nigerian owned enterprise.

“Members of this club have been champions of these causes because they represent matters of dominant common interest at that time,” Fashola said.

Fashola called on members of the executives council of the club to resuscitate inter-clubs sporting events to keep the youth engaged.

Fashola applauded the executives and members of the club for upholding the goals of the club to engender development in the state.

” I think that the next 50 years provides enormous opportunities for the club and offers enormous blessings beyond and in excess of what has happened in the last 50 years.

“So, while we celebrate yesterday, we must reach out and seize tomorrow because it is bigger than yesterday.

“I think, therefore, that the team of Mr Razak Amodu, the president of the club, his executive members and the planning committee for this anniversary deserve utmost commendation,” he said.

The chairman of the occasion, Mr Akin Kekere-Ekun said that clubs were family units with the closest link to various communities and sectors of the society.

Similarly the President of Eko Club, Mr Rasak Amodu, said that the club had resuscitated sports by organising sporting tournaments.
Education › EKOEXCEL Transforms Lagos Public Education by Agebab(op): 6:00pm On Sep 11, 2024
EKOEXCEL transforms Lagos public education

Education

As EKOEXCEL celebrates its fifth anniversary, the Lagos State government's groundbreaking initiative has proven to be a game-changer in transforming public primary education.

Launched in 2019 by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu under the THEMES Agenda, EKOEXCEL (Excellence in Child Education and Learning) was designed to elevate education standards and bridge the learning gap in Lagos State’s public primary schools.

Five years on, the programme has recorded significant milestones, reshaped classroom experiences, and delivered measurable learning gains, establishing itself as a beacon of hope for educational reforms across Nigeria and beyond.

Since its inception, EKOEXCEL has systematically improved the foundational literacy and numeracy skills of pupils, empowering them with the tools needed for future academic success.

The programme, managed by the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB), in partnership with NewGlobe, a technical partner renowned for its innovative, technology-driven educational solutions.

By leveraging modern pedagogical methods, technology, and data-driven approaches, EKOEXCEL has successfully moved over 13,000 teachers from analogue to digital teaching methods, reaching nearly a million children across 1,013 public primary schools.

The impact of this transformation is evident in the significant strides made in the education sector of Lagos State.
The outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020 presented a unique challenge to education systems worldwide, including Lagos.

EKOEXCEL, however, adapted quickly by launching the EKOEXCEL@home initiative, ensuring continuity in learning despite school closures.

The innovative approach combined self-study activity packets, interactive audio sessions, virtual classroom experiences, and WhatsApp quizzes, guaranteeing that pupils, even in the most remote and poorly connected communities, could continue learning.

This swift adaptation became a model for other states and regions grappling with similar challenges.
The data speaks volumes about EKOEXCEL’s effectiveness.

The 2020-2021 Endline Fluency and Numeracy Evaluation revealed that EKOEXCEL pupils made substantial progress in oral reading fluency and foundational numeracy.

An average Primary 3 pupil under EKOEXCEL now reads at nearly the same fluency level as an average Primary 5 pupil before the programme’s launch.

In terms of numeracy, the achievements are equally remarkable, demonstrating that the learning gains achieved through EKOEXCEL are substantial and at par with global best practices.

A study by Nobel Prize-winning economist, Prof. Michael Kremer, further validated EKOEXCEL's approach.

The study found that early childhood development (ECD) and primary school pupils in education programmes employing NewGlobe's methodology, as used in EKOEXCEL, gained almost an additional year of learning in just two years compared to their peers in traditional schools.

These results are unprecedented and have reinforced EKOEXCEL's standing as a leading educational intervention that aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs) 4.1.1.b, which aims to reduce learning deprivation by ensuring all children can read a simple passage with comprehension by the end of primary school.

Alaguntan Community calls for help as IKEDC plunges their Community into darkness for 6 months

Residents of Alaguntan Community in Alimosho Local Government Area, Lagos State, are appealing to the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) to please restore power back to their community after their electricity transformer was taken away for repairs since February.

Mr Alade, Ayodeji Oyekunle, the Secretary of Alaguntan Community Development Association (CDA) said the IKEDC Shotunde electricity distribution  transformer on Taiwo Street,  supplying electricity to about 100 houses in the community, had been removed since Febuary for repairs, putting residents in darkness.

He said the prolonged absence of electricity in the community has made residents vulnerable to attacks from marauders that operates under the cover of darkness as well as grounding businesses and other activities that depends on electricity to operate.

He said the community has written several letters to the IKEDC to please replace/return the transformer supplying electricity to the community, removed since Febuary for repairs by the electricity company.

"The distribution transformer under Ikeja Electric Plc Feeder (11-AlimoshoNJ-T4-Oki Feeder) had a technical issue around January 2024 and was taken out of the community and replaced with another distribution transformer after two months of harrowing experience.

"Few weeks afterwards, the replaced distribution transformer had issues and after logging a formal complaint, it was also moved out of the community for technical routine maintenance.

"Several mails and messages from our secretariat (SR-5186587) and concerned residents have not been given utmost attention.

"Eight months after, it's highly disheartening to state that we have only enjoyed energy supply for less than two months in this year 2024.

"Both communal living and business activities have been subjected to harrowing experiences of kids, wives and the elderly scavenging to fetch water from neighbouring communities (even in the hostile inflation rate of PMS and Diesel).

"We have experienced several security breaches at nights and total redundancy of human activities. However, it is imperative to mention that seventy-five (75%) of residents in the community are pre-paid metres' users." Oyekunle said

He said there is also a dangerously positioned bad wooden electric poles and LT cables, most especially at Omopelumi Close, Kokumo Road (down towards the stream), which complaints had also been brought severally, to the IKEDC officials without any action.

He said though they have brought their plight to the attention of Nigeria Electricity Regularly Commission (NREC) but they are passionately appealing to IKEDC to please save them from the suffering and pains the lack of electricity has brought upon their community.

UN Women signs MoU to drive gender equality in leadership

The United Nations (UN) Women has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with some media executives on promoting gender equality in leadership.

The Country Representative of UN Women and ECOWAS, Ms Beatrice Eyong, signed the document with some media executives at a UN Women roundtable with media executives.

The event held in Ikeja on Friday.

“We are here with few media executives and managing directors to key media organisations on challenges affecting women’s representation in the social economic and political sectors.

“We need to examine opportunities where the media can address challenges faced by women and girls.

“UN Women invests in enhancing personal resilience and professional development of women in order to increase their contributions to leadership, economic growth, peace, security and humanitarian service.

“UN Women believe that investment in women equals to investing in the architecture of the society,” she said.

According to her, no nation can prosper if its women are excluded.

Eyong also said that women had different needs.

” We have women who just want economic empowerment mostly in the rural areas.

“Some women have passed this stage; what they want is recognition.

“There are also women who just want to contribute to the society.

“Women have different needs; so one size cannot fit all, we need to identify what this needs are in order to position women strategically,” she said.

She highlighted some services UN Women rendered in order to promote gender equality.

Eyong said that gender equality was central to the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adding that Nigeria had been lagging behind.

“As long as we are not able to accelerate gender equality, we will not be able to accelerate implementation of the SDGs; that is why we are here to recognise the fact that we cannot do this job alone.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some of the media executives who signed the MoU are from Nigerian Television Authority, News Agency of Nigeria, Voice of Nigeria, Lagos Television (LTV) and The Guardian Media Group.

At the event, Mrs Amina Oyagbola, the Founder of Women in Successful Careers, called on media executives to focus more on advocating gender equality.

” I am going to amplify what has been said by Ms Eyong on the role of the media in advancing gender equality. It is fundamental, it is critical.

” The media is the most powerful tool for changing perception, for influencing public discussion and for challenging societal norms.

” You can contribute in so many ways – by raising awareness and shaping the narrative, reporting gender-related cases and giving necessary support,” she said.

Mrs Moji Makanjuola, a former President of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, said that there was need for the media to promote good causes.

“Women are making giant strides,” he said.

UN Women advocates for more inclusiveness

The United Nations (UN) Women has called on stakeholders in the private and public sector to promote inclusiveness by ensuring that women have access to financial resources.

The Country Representative to UN Women and ECOWAS, Ms Beatrice Eyong, said that only 10 per cent of women in Nigeria have access to financial resources for entrepreneurial development and access to public procurement.

She said this at the UN Women and Partners Open Day for South West held in Lagos on Thursday.

Eyong said that gender equality was central to the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs) and the country had been lagging behind by 40 per cent.

“As long as we’re not able to accelerate gender equality we will not be able to accelerate the SDGs and that’s why we’re here to recognise the fact that we cannot do this job alone.

“We recognise the fact that we cannot stay in Abuja and do the work so we’re going to the six geopolitical zones; this is the third zone that we have been to.

“We started with South South, North West and here we are in South West,” she said.

Eyong, said that the UN Women wanted to showcase its work through the Open Day and the need for women to have access to information to enable them to take decisions that would empower them.

She noted that through the various initiatives of the UN Women, it had given second chance to thousands of women who missed out on education due to early marriage, childbirth and other factors.

“To bridge the gap, what we do is to ensure that young girls and women that were unable to get education due to early marriage or pregnancy get an opportunity to learn a trade.

“Which helps them become independent financially, this gives them an edge to take informed decision,” she said.

Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by his Deputy Chief of Staff, Mr Sam Egube, said that the state government had been intentional with giving women a voice and would continue to do so.

“In Lagos, we believe ladies first, supported by men. Because, I don’t see how any woman would make progress if it is strongly resisted by men.

“Neither do I see any woman that would make progress that is strongly resisted by women.

“There is nothing like being successful in a lonely place. So we must also acknowledge our male champion like our gender friendly,” he noted.

Similarly, the Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs Cecelia Bolaji-Dada, said that women voices needed to be heard in all decisions affecting them.

“I want to assure you that for me, my government and my domain, we are given space, I am aware that other state can do more to ensure adequate representation in leadership roles,” she said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that commissioners from Oyo State, Ogun, Ondo State, Ekiti and host state Lagos were present at the event.

Oil magnet says Depot owners crucial in Dangote PMS delivery

Capt. Emmanuel Iheanacho, Chairman of Integrated Oil and Gas Ltd., on Wednesday emphasised the indispensable role of depot owners in Nigeria’s fuel supply chain, particularly in the context of the recent delivery of Dangote Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

Iheanacho, made the clarification in a reaction to a statement made by the billionaire and Chairman of FBN Holdings, Mr Femi Otedola, who suggested that Nigerian depot owners should dismantle their facilities and sell them as scrap, given the arrival of Dangote’s PMS.

Iheanacho who is also a member of the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN), clarified that petroleum products storage depots are a vital component of the fuel supply chain, complementing primary fuel sources.

He stressed that without these depots, other elements in the supply chain would struggle to deliver fuel to consumers.

"While there might be competitive elements in the market, collaboration and cooperation are essential for ensuring a stable fuel supply in Nigeria.

"Petroleum depots are not a replacement for primary fuel sources but are crucial for storing and distributing products to meet demand,"Iheanacho said.

He added that depots play an important role in distribution, particularly given Nigeria's dispersed infrastructure.

Iheanacho also noted that while private depots may compete with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (NNPC) in terms of storage and distribution, they are not necessarily in direct competition with the NNPC or the Dangote Refinery.

"Instead, these depots often work in conjunction with both to support a reliable fuel supply chain.

"Private depots may compete with petroleum importers for market share by offering essential storage and distribution services.

"Ultimately, competition aims to balance market prices.

"However, depots are key partners in supporting the entire supply chain, including NNPC and Dangote," he added.

Iheanacho concluded that depots provide critical storage and distribution support not only for NNPC and Dangote but also for petroleum importers, ensuring a more efficient and reliable fuel supply network.
