Career › Council Boss Urges Youths To Embrace Vocational Training by Agebab(op): 4:49am On Sep 02, 2024
Council boss urges youths to embrace vocational training

Alhaji Fatai Ayoola, the Chairman of Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government, says conventional education is not enough to prepare children for the future.

Ayoola said with the current economic realities, parents and guardians should encourage children to embrace vocational training to become entrepreneurs.

Ayoola said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Sunday.

He said talented children in sports, music, fashion and other vocations should be given necessary support to horn their skills.

“In whatever we do, we can’t take away the fact that education is important, but we must also encourage our upcoming generations to combine education with vocational training.

“In my days growing up we had this; when you get back from school you either go to a mechanic workshop or tailoring shop. What they failed to do then was to be blend the two.

“But in today’s world both education and vocational training can be done simultaneously,” he said.

He cited the case of Gabby Thomas, an American athlete at the last Olympics, a Harvard graduate with Master’s Degree in public health, who won the 200 meters event.

“The reality of our economy now doesn’t permit us to do just one thing; our youths need to multitask,” he said.

For this reason, he said the council organised the 2024 Ajegunle Summer Camp in August to help children with potential combine education and skills acquisition in their chosen fields.

He said 350 children attended the one month skills development programme at the Maracana Stadium, Ajegunle, where they engaged in football, Basketball, Table Tennis and Board Game.

“This programme kept them away from trouble; you know how children are,” the chairman said.

Ayoola said the council would hold another training programme for youths in October.

“We have started preparation for the programme known as Ajeromi Ifelodun Youth Empowerment Summit, 2024 (AJIF), which will cost us N400 million.

“It is an initiative of my administration to train and empower thousands of unskilled youths for two months in 27 vocations,” he said.

He said the vocations included Screen Technology/Printing, Car Tracking, ICT, Catering Services/Hotel Management, Furniture, Fashion Design and Soap Making.

“We also have shoe making, phone repairs, painting, electrical services, CCTV/Solar/Inverters installation, vulcanizing, furniture and fish farming

“We want to keep engaging our youths, to give them a sense of purpose, we want them to do better and be better,” Ayoola said.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to youth development, noting that about 5,000 youths have benefited from various vocational training programmes organised by his council.

“We partnered with the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs & Poverty Alleviation, and instructors from their Skills Acquisition Centres are the ones training the participants.

“At the end of the training, the Local Government will extend cash support to them, and 60 participants will be presented with Mini Buses, Tricycles and motorcycles,” he said.

Another beneficiary Francesca Ogah prayed for the organisers while appreciating their kind gesture.

“The programme is very good. I thank them. May God bless them. It is very good because those who have no money to buy medicine they came here and they gave them free medicine. I thank them. May God reward them for all they are doing,” Ogah said.

Lagos Council to groom future Olympians through City Marathon

Maiden edition of the ) Ajeromi-Ifekodun Local Government Area of Lagos State on Friday said it would groom young athletes as future Olympic stars through its proposed maiden youth City Marathon.

Mr McAnthony Anaelechukwu, the council’s Director-General (DG), made this known at a press briefing on the maiden 10-kilometer youth city marathon scheduled for November.

According to him, the take-off point for the proposed marathon will be at the Maracana Pavilion Stadium, while the Signal Barracks Sports Ground will be the endpoint.

Anaelechukwu, who expressed displeasure on Team Nigeria’s outing in the last Olympics in France, said the council was poised to make the desired difference in athletics.

He said it was high time Nigeria joined the league of countries like Kenya in the short and long-distance global marathon arena.

”We feel we should give Kenyans a run for their money and where else to start if not from Ajegunle city, the home of sports; we’ve done very well in football.

”We have not had it so well in athletics recently; look at the last Olympics; Nigeria performed badly, badly by all standards.

”What we are doing now in Ajegunle the world should just watch out for us and give us the chance.

”We are doing very well in basketball. So we want to take Athletics to another level by coming out with this marathon race.

”After the marathon, we want to start training our youth and children, so they can know how to run those short-distance races.

”I think it’s high time we give the youths that leverage, that platform to showcase their talent.

”Some times ago we had this Ajegunle’s kids marathon, you know, and it was so surprising to see little boys and girls run out two times,” he said.

He also emphasised the importance of keeping the youths engaged by organising events that would keep them busy.

”Let’s get the youth to come out and take part in a marathon like this Ajegunle City Youth Marathon, which is a 10-kilometer race for them to showcase their talent.

”Initially, we did for children within ages of nine to 14, you know, and the time they returned was something that really inspired us, and we decided, why don’t we just push this to the next level?” he said.

Similarly, the marathon’s Convener, Mr Isaac Moses, said that the N20 million cash prize would be won by the top three finishers while the first 50 participants would go home with cash gifts.

”Even those that didn’t run can win gifts too by buying our raffle draws to win mouth-watering prizes, huge gadgets, flat screens, free refrigerators, and different items through the raffle prizes.

”The race is 10 kilometers, but the celebrity race is 2.5 kilometers.

”The winner goes home with N300,000, the second runner-up gets N200, 000 and the third prize also goes home with N100,000,” he said.

Also, Isaac Omoyele, the Youth Chairman for Ajeromi-Ifelodun, in his remarks, said the marathon would create awareness of the need to keep fit youths.

”The marathon is some form of health integration to help young people improve their health-seeking behavior and also take their health seriously while also trying to drive fitness,” he said.

NAN reports that no fewer than 1,000 youths are expected to participate in the marathon.

The first category of the race is the Masters Division, strictly for people living with disability, then the Open Division for the youths, and the VVIP division for celebrities.

LASG, RMAFC collaborate on economic diversification to boost IGR

The Lagos State Government says it is intensifying efforts to diversify its economy and boost Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) through a partnership with the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).

The Commissioner for Finance, Mr Abayomi Oluyomi, said this during a visit by the RMAFC to Lagos House in Ikeja on Tuesday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the RMAFC tour which will be across the 36 states, aims to asses the current efforts of states in terms of policies, programme and projects toward enhancing the diversification of their economy.

According to him, IGR is the backbone of Lagos’ economy and collaboration with RMAFC is crucial for unlocking funding and investment opportunities.

“We are dreaming very big for Lagos State, so that we can get to the objective of what Mr Governor has set out to achieve for the citizens of Lagos State.

“The task of ensuring Lagos State continues to have a robust and diversified income base, driven substantially by IGR, remains predicated on the support, cooperation and collaboration with our partners at the federal level.

“Internally generated revenue is the mainstay of Lagos, and the state remains a trailblazer in the country even as Federal Accounts Allocation (FAAC) share of revenues is shrinking,” he said.

Oluyomi revealed that Lagos had achieved significant IGR growth, increasing it by 70 per cent in five years.

The commissioner noted that the state also aims to further elevate this between 80 per cent or 90 per cent to optimise its revenue potential.

Oluyomi said that the interactive session, attended by critical ministries and agencies of the state government, aimed to harness the state’s resources toward reducing reliance on federal allocations.

He explained that there were several funds available to states that were underutilised due to a lack of awareness, underscoring the importance of RMAFC’s intervention.

The commissioner also highlighted the RMAFC’s role in capacity development to enhance states’ competencies and assist them in diversifying their economic bases, with agriculture, trade, commerce, and information technology as examples.

“I commend you for your commitment to support IGR growth in Lagos State.

“Your willingness to partner with us in this endeavour is a testament to the confidence you have in our state’s potential and the opportunities that lie ahead,” he added.

He noted that the partnership would also help the government to promote growth of small and medium businesses in the state by assisting them to get single interest loans.

Alhaji Ismail Agaka, who led the RMAFC team, noted that one of the commission’s functions is to advise federal and state governments on economic diversification.

“One of the functions of the Revenue, Mobilisation, Allocation, and Fiscal Commission is to advise the federal, state and local governments on how to diversify their economies and collaborate with them in this regard.

“We’ve been doing this for years, including summits with various states, dating back to 2004,” he said.

NGO impacts 1500 children, women in 10 months

An NGO, Sustainable Development Goals for Her Initiative (SDGforHer), says it has impacted over 1500 children and women in the last 10 months through its various outreaches.

The Founder of SDGforHer, Mrs Hannah Ayilaran-Omon, said this during a community outreach in Makoko, on Thursday in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the outreach centred on promoting health and wellness among women through the provision of free health screenings and medical consultations.

The outreach was done in partnership with Total Health Trust Ltd., a Tangerine Company, and the Alternative Bank’s Food Bank Project.

Ayilaran-Omon said the focus of the NGO was on empowering women in underserved communities toward the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“Our community outreach is targeted towards different sectors. We’ve had for children, teenagers, youths and women; today’s outreach is targeted at older women’s healthcare.

“We’re passionate about women, about gender equality and everything that promotes women,” she said.

She said that public-private partnership remains the only way to engender sustainable development, noting that the government alone cannot do it.

Ayilaran-Omon added that most NGOs face funding challenges, calling for more partnerships to improve SDGforHer’s reach and impact.

According to her, over 200 women benefited from the outreach, with medical professionals conducting blood sugar and blood pressure screenings, weight and height measurements, and Body Mass Index (BMI) assessments.

“Our partner, Alternative Bank Food Bank project, fed no fewer than 200 women. It’s a collaborative effort to ensure that we help women in this community.

“Makoko is definitely underserved. We had an initiative here for the International Women’s Day, and we saw a lot of young pregnant women without antenatal services,” she said.

Similarly, Dr Eyitayo Abejide, Head, Medical Services, Total Health Trust (THT), encouraged the women to prioritise their physical and mental health.

Abejide said that regular health check-ups were critical to preventing chronic diseases.

Also, Mr Solomon Okonkwo, Head, Corporate Social Investment, Alternative Bank, said the bank’s Food Bank Project was known for addressing food insecurity, gender inequality, poverty and hunger.

“Our goal is to enhance more opportunities for women by empowering them financially. They equally need to be healthy before they can think of being financially empowered to take care of their family.

“The Alternative Bank is a brand that has been consistent in terms of our Food Bank Project and we’re glad to partner with SDGforHer,” Okonkwo said.

Commenting, Mrs Adedayo Kolade, a widow expressed her gratitude to the foundation for creating awareness on healthy living.

“Health as they say is wealth. Access to healthcare can be challenging due to financial constraints and limited resources. We are happy they are helping us address this,” she said.

Business › How Beneficiaries Absconded With Empowerment Loans, Sold Equipment – LG Chairman by Agebab(op): 5:35pm On Aug 07, 2024
How beneficiaries absconded with empowerment loans, sold equipment – LG chairman

Most past beneficiaries of youth empowerment schemes of Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area of Lagos State absconded with loans or sold their empowerment tools.

The Chairman of the local government, Alhaji Fatai Ayoola, made the disclosure in Lagos.

Ayoola said that the beneficiaries were more interested in cash at the moment than a secure future.

He said that none of the youths and women empowered with loans in 2017 paid back.

He said the council, in 2018, decided to use equipment to empower another set, but 60 per cent of the beneficiaries sold the equipment and absconded.

Ayoola listed the equipment to include shuttle buses, motorcycles, tricycles, vulcanising machines, grinding machines, hairdryers and sewing machines.

“One person that I don’t want to mention his name got a bus. After giving him the keys, he sold the bus for N500,000 at the gate and went to a beer parlor to declare drinks for people.

He described the trend as discouraging.

“We engage our youths annually by giving them what will make them to stand on their own and turn them to entrepreneurs.

“It is not as if government has not been trying but the perception of the people as to what they really want is what we all have to sit down and ask,” he said.

He said that the decision of the council, later, to empower business owners with funding yielded 90 cent success and 10 per cent failure as some beneficiaries presented businesses not directly owned by them.

“For instance, somebody went and snapped her mother’s shop and put it forward as her own shop. We gave them N100,000 each.

“Unfortunately for her, we had sent a text message to their phones because one must have registered with us.

“On the collection day, she wanted to show us the text we sent to her, and brought out iPhone 13.

“How can someone who wants to collect N100,000 from the council own an iPhone 13. It doesn’t make sense,” Ayoola said.

Ayoola said that the council spent more than N250 million for women empowerment in July 2024.

He said that the empowerment programme was facilitated by Wema Bank and some other organisations.

“The women went home with cash ranging from N50,000 to N500,000; 100 deep freezers; 1,000 units of 3kg gas cylinders; 50 pieces of 2.9kva generating sets; 50 pieces of hair dryers; 50 pieces of sewing machines and 5,000 bags of 10kg rice,” he said.

The chairman said that it was important for youths to focus on long-term goals rather than hoping to ‘cash out’ instantly.

Ayoola hoped that the council’s partnership with WEMA Bank and others would improve the social-economic status of the women.

“Overtime, we have been thinking about how to address empowerment issues; so, we came up with a women’s summit where we linked about 3,000 women with WEMA Bank which partnered with us by giving us some funds.

“ We earmarked N250 million to empower our women. To a large extent, that has really helped,” he said.

The governor said that the forum was to update stakeholders on the state 2024 Budget performance for the first half of the year.

The commissioner added that the forum was aimed to inform stakeholders about the government’s plans ahead.

He said that the government would obtain input, suggestions and contributions of the residents for its 2025 Budget, from the summit.

“The aim of this forum is to promote citizens’ participation in preparing the next budget.

“The exercise will showcase the government’s plans for the citizens and gather information from stakeholders ahead of the 2025 appropriation,” he said.

George emphasised that Lagos city remained a pacesetter for other African cities owing to its rapid economic growth, urbanisation and cultural diversity.

“In 2024, Lagos advanced 12 spots in the Global Ecosystem Index, reflecting significant growth and innovation with over 500 startups and constituting over 73 per cent of Nigeria’s total.

“Lagos dominates the nation’s startup landscape.

“It also ranks first in Africa for the consumer goods industry and is the only African city in the global top 70 startup ecosystems,” the commissioner said.

He said that the state government provided 23 per cent of its 2024 Budget from its economic affairs to cater for infrastructure renewal and development to modernise the city and support its growing population.

“The state launched several initiatives and projects to improve the standard of living, build infrastructure, ensure food security, enhance ease of doing business and affordable public transportation, and improve energy supply.

The state’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotosho, made the call during a tour of the Odo Iya Alaro Bridge in Kosofe Local Government Area of the state.

“Every time we fix bridges, they vandalise it; people are not taking responsibility for whatever the government has done to make life easy for motorists.

“So I will like to appeal to residents that if you see something say something. It’s all about you it is for you to be able to be comfortable while driving, to get to wherever you are going faster.

“So all of the people vandalising the bolts and joints, the law will come after them, when you see anybody trying to destroy here or wherever, please talk.

“As good citizens you can call for the arrest of such individuals. We understand the pain that the people of these area are going through. As soon as it is fixed the pain will ease. It is just temporary,” he said.

Omotosho explained that the tour was part of the state’s policy to monitor and ensure bridge maintenance and management as well as ensure global Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC).

Earlier, the Special Adviser to the Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Infrastructure, Mr Olufemi Daramola, appealed to residents of the area to exercise patience on the rehabilitation work on the bridge.

We will be more decisive with tree planting says Sanwo-Olu

The Lagos State Government (LASG) has reiterated its commitment to proffer solutions to climate change by planting several trees in the next one year.

Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu said this in commemoration of Lagos State Tree Planting Day at the 2024 tree planting ceremony which held at the Lagos House Marina on Sunday July 14, 2024.

He said there is need for deliberate and concerted effort at changing the mentality the people have towards climate change to save lives and the environment at large.

According to him, "as a foremost State, Lagos has to be intentional and very proactive in its resolve to take back our environment, and as a government we are engaging within ourselves to ensure we raise the bar.

"We have planned to ensure we plant a lot of trees this year alone and we monitor their growth while we sustain or improve this number every year to keep ourselves alive.

"I have spoken to the head of our agency to design ways to achieve growth consistency in this fight for our lives and environment",the Governor emphasized.

He added, "Why this is important is that it is also a demonstration of our government's commitment. For all of us to have taken out time to have come out this morning signifies that we believe in our tree planting initiative.

"As an ornament that can propel some of the conversation we are trying to pass across for the environment and water resource ministry, I have said it is not about the two or three minutes that we spend here," Sanwo-Olu said.

The governor said it was important to do everything humanly possible to mitigate against the effect of climate change.

"It's about how we take our conversation forward into every sphere of life of several millions of residents that are not here today.

" Part of our strategy is where we can attempt to save our environment to be able to curb the surge of climate change is by tree planting, it's been proven, it’s been seen.

" It's something that we must as a government deliberately set out a strategy to do. Tree planting should be a daily, weekly and monthly activity, we shouldn't wait for another year," he said.

The Governor called on the General Manager, Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK), Mrs. Adetoun Popoola to ensure that planting of trees in the state is not just a yearly event.

" So that we can achieve the number of trees that we should be planting, by the time we come next year July 14 we should hold the LASPARK GM accountable.

" I have encouraged her to come up with an efficient scheme that both the private and public sector will work on.

" The city is not over built that the state cannot receive up to 20, 000 trees in the next one year, that is the challenge we will pass on to LASPARK so that we will have an environment better than we met it" he said

Mr Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources said that the theme for this year's tree planting day is "Nurture Our Future".

"As a government we should be able to plant a lot more trees in the next 12 months, but beyond that, it's for us to be able to put an activity around it, a ceremony where we will applaud tree planting marshals so that it can grow organically.

Wahab said that the event underscored the efforts to protect the future while taking full ownership to develop a better environmental habit for a quality impact on climate change.

" As a government, it is our collective responsibility that we develop strategic methods to improve the environment, ensure that it is flood free and make it conducive for residents.

" This can be achieved through the continuous cleaning of the environment from time to time. It is our goal today to further educate residents on the need to take ownership of their environment and ensure that they continuously clean their surroundings and dispose waste responsibly.

"We acknowledge that we must sustain this as our own contribution towards maintaining a sustainable environment," the Commissioner said.

The General Manager Lagos State Parks and Gardens, Mrs Adetoun Popoola in her closing remarks promised that she and her team will continue to ensure that tree planting is not just a yearly event.

"On behalf of LASPARK and all stakeholders, I wish to express our sincere appreciation for the successful conduct of this year’s Tree Planting Day.

"I wish to give special gratitude to Mr governor for taking out time to participate in this year’s event and equally thank the Commissioner for his unwavering support to the Agency and in championing all environmental issues in the State.

Our theme, “Nurture our Future,” is therefore a call to action. It is a reminder that the decisions we make today will shape the world we live tomorrow.

Protest

By Abiodun Azi

Lagos. July 9, 2024 (NAN) Members of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non -Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) at the College of Medicine ,University of Lagos(CMUL),on Tuesday, staged a protest over withheld salaries.

Mr Tunde Aderibigbe, National Executive Council (NEC) member of NASU, one of those who led the protest in Lagos, said that the workers were unhappy that their four months salaries were still being withheld despite many appeals to the Federal Government.

He also said the workers also staged the protest because some of the agreements the government signed with the two unions had not been fulfilled.

“We entered into so many agreements with President Muhammadu Buhari administration, including the issue of earned allowances ,which are yet to be attended to.

“The one that is really disturbing the minds of our members is that all the four unions in the universities embarked on strike in 2022, and at the end of the day, our (NASU/SSANU)salaries were withheld.

“We signed an agreement that after the strike, no member of our unions will be intimidated or victimised ,but we were surprised that our salaries were withheld.

“We felt that was intimidation and victimisation, we did not take them to court, our sister union did, and at the end of the day, they were paid after the presidential pardon, which covers all the four unions,”he said.

Aderibigbe, also a staff member of CMUL, said the protest was to call on government to release their salaries without delay.

Mr Mohammed Ibrahim, Chairman, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), said that they staged the protest to make the government aware of what he called the injustice being done to them.

Ibrahim said that government should be run with truth, conscience, lamenting that the many agreements the union had with government had not been fulfilled.

He said by not honouring the agreements , government had displayed insensitivity towards the plight of members of the unions.

The chairman said that it was wrong not to pay SSANU and NASU out of the four unions that went on strike.

According to him, members of the two unions feel cheated about the withheld salaries.

Ibrahim who noted that members of the unions were important to the running of universities ,urged the government to release the salaries without delay.

He appealed to the Minister of Education to table their demands before the President ,for action.

Mr Bukayo Ayantoye, Chairman, Non Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), said that the withheld four months salaries had lost value owing to inflation.
