Cameroon said Wednesday its forces have freed a German hostage kidnapped
six months ago in Nigeria by Boko Haram, as African leaders appealed to the
United Nations for support in fighting the Islamist militants.
“A special operation led by Cameroonian armed forces along with security services of
friendly nations succeeded this night (Tuesday) in freeing Nitsch Eberhard Robert, a
German citizen abducted in Nigeria in July 2014 by the Boko Haram sect,” the
Cameroon presidency said in a statement.
A spokesman for the German foreign ministry confirmed the man’s release, adding
that he was now in Cameroon’s capital Yaounde.
No further details were immediately available about the hostage or the raid itself,
including where it took place.
The release was announced a day after Boko Haram’s leader Abubakar Shekau
mocked African leaders who were meeting in Niger to try to forge a united front
against the Islamists.
“African kings… I challenge you to attack me now. I am ready.”
Boko Haram — which has been waging a brutal insurgency in Nigeria since 2009 —
previously abducted foreigners in Nigeria and Cameroon, but all have since been
released.
However, more than 200 schoolgirls abducted by the militants in April last year in one
of the most shocking acts of their insurgency are still missing.
As news of the German’s rescue emerged, the African Union announced it has asked
the Security Council to approve a mandate for a regional force and a fund to help
finance it.
“Boko Haram is a threat not only to Nigeria and the region, but also to the continent
as a whole,” AU head Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said in a statement.
Nigeria’s army has come under fire repeatedly for failing to crush the militants, whose
insurgency has left 13,000 people dead and forced 1.5 million from their homes.
Boko Haram has also been stepping up attacks in Nigeria and neighbouring
Cameroon, where it abducted dozens of people Sunday.
Niger said Wednesday the headquarters of the regional African force set up to fight
Boko Haram will now be transferred to Chad after its base in the Nigerian border town
of Baga was overrun earlier this month by the Islamist militants.
– Regional efforts hamstrung –
Chad is seen as having the most capable military in the region and at the weekend
sent a convoy of troops and 400 military vehicles into neighbouring Cameroon to
battle Boko Haram.
Two Cameroonian soldiers were wounded in heavy clashes Tuesday with Boko Haram
in the far north of Cameroon, which borders Nigeria.
“We managed to repel the enemy,” a Cameroonian military commander told AFP on
condition of anonymity. “We saw signs that made us think Boko Haram lost men.”
Regional efforts to fight Boko Haram have been hampered by Nigeria’s reticence, with
Abuja looking suspiciously on any foreign military intervention on its soil.
“Nigeria feels it can take care of the problem itself, but (Boko Haram) is no longer just
impacting Nigeria, it’s an issue for the whole region,” said an African diplomat based in Ethiopia’s capital.
Nigeria and its neighbours held talks this week in Niger’s capital Niamey on speeding
up the creation of the force to fight the militants.
Anger against the militants is growing in Cameroon, with protesters hitting the
capital’s streets Wednesday with signs saying “Beat it Boko Haram,” and “I am
Kolofata,” in reference to town that has suffered repeated attacks from Boko Haram.
The group’s leader Shekau claimed responsibility for the assault on Baga in a video
posted Tuesday which is thought to have killed hundreds and is considered the
militants’ deadliest attack.

Barring any last-minute change, the coast now seems clear for Edo State
governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, to emerge as running mate to Major-
General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), presidential candidate of All Progressives
Congress, APC, as the party rounds off its series of caucus sessions today.
Following Buhari’s emergence, the party leaders
have been holding closed-door meetings in Lagos, to consider candidates for the
vice president slot.
A source at one of the meetings said to have held at the Bourdillon residence of
the party national leader in Lagos, former Lagos Governor Bola Tinubu, disclosed
that the APC had finally resolved to zone the position of Vice President to the
South-South region.
The top member of the party who craved
anonymity, said: “Initially, we wanted to zone the position to the South-West but
we also put into consideration, the fact that President Jonathan is from the South-
South and it may be unwise to take the Presidency away from the zone under the
circumstance.”
The source added that two candidates were
considered for the position, namely Edo Governor Adams Oshiomhole, and his
Rivers counterpart, Rotimi Amaechi.
He explained that the party eventually saw the
Oshiomhole option as more attractive for about
four reasons. “One, he is a former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress and
as such, the labour force still see him as their leader. “Two, he is a Christian from
the Roman Catholic sect, which accounts for the highest population of
Christians in the country.
“Again, Oshiomhole is vociferous, vocal and
articulate in persuasive prowess, unlike Buhari
who is not as such endowed with the gift of the
garb. “And above all, Oshiomhole speaks the Hausa language fluently as he grew
up in Kaduna where he had his early education.”

APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun is not only from the South-South but from Edo
State as with Oshiomhole, was put into consideration at the Lagos meeting.
“We have decided that Odigie-Oyegun should step down for the sake of
Oshiomhole and it would seem he is showing understanding on the issue,” he
stressed. The source also hinted that the South-West will now be compensated
with the position of Senate President by the APC and that Tinubu was preferred for
the position.
He said the former Lagos governor had been
advised to consult with his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who has already won
the Lagos Central Senatorial District’s ticket, to step down and forfeit the ticket to
her husband.
“For all I know, we are moving on; there will be no rancour over position sharing,”

Nigerian military intelligence officials say they were surprised at the sophisticated weapons being used by Boko Haram insurgents. The reaction came after Nigerian troops captured a T-55 armored tank and a highly sophisticate Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) from the Islamist insurgents in a battle yesterday at Konduga, Borno State.
Our sources said Boko Haram fighters made another big and desperate push to take Konduga, a town that has been the scene of incessant battles and disastrous outings for Boko Haram fighters in recent weeks.
Boko Haram began their latest push on Thursday, attacking Konduga from several angles. But when they found out they were getting defeated, some of the Islamist fighters arrived at the scene of battle from the Bama axis with a surprise weapon, a
T-55 tank. Our military sources disclosed that the insurgents had never previously used such a mammoth weapon in battle.
The tank and APC were eventually seized from the insurgents after a fierce battle in which soldiers killed more than 100 Boko Haram terrorists. some 15 soldiers were also killed during the firefight that lasted several hours.
The Nigerian army said the seizure of the tank was a major blow to the insurgents.
"The sheer power of the tank surprised us. And the tank has camouflage painting that made it blend with the area in a way that it could not have easily been detected by Nigerian jets flying over the area," said a military officer.

One of our military sources said that Boko Haram's ownership of the tank shows the extent to which the sect is funded by powerful as well as wealthy supporters and an indication of the strength of the Islamic group's foreign links.

An investigation by SaharaReporters has revealed that a Nigerian private jet caught in Johannesburg with $10 million belongs to Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor,
the head of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN). Mr. Oritsejafor is also a close confidant of President Goodluck Jonathan.
The CAN leader’s private plane with US registration number N808HG was one of two jets cited by South African officials on September 5 Mr. Oritsejafor's jet arrived South Africa with $9.3 million cash loaded in several suitcases. News of the seizure of the cash broke over the weekend, triggering questions about the ownership of the jets and weapons they intended to purchase.
Nigerian aviation authorities disclosed that one of the jets belonged to Pastor Oritsejafor while the second one was registered to Felix Idiga, the owner of Jafac Aviation Limited.
Two Nigerians and an Israeli defense contractor, Eyal Mesiaka arrived in the jet when they were accosted in South Africa authorities. A South African source disclosed that Mr. Oritsejafor's jet was released after top Nigerian officials intervened, claiming that the weapons to be purchased had the official blessing of the Nigerian government.
The jet arrived with two plastic suitcases and two hand luggages with combination locks only known to the Isreali contractor, according to CityPress. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has announced that it will commit $50
million to support the scale up of emergency efforts to contain the Ebola Virus
Disease outbreak in Nigeria and other countries trying to contain the virus.
According to a statement issued by the foundation on Wednesday, the fund will
be immediately released to the United Nations agencies and international
organisations that are involved in the Ebola fight to enable them and national
governments purchase needed supplies and scale up emergency operations.
An additional $2m will also be committed immediately to the Centres for
Disease Control and Prevention to support incident management, treatment,
and health care system strengthening, according to report from The Punch
In addition, the foundation said it would work with public and private sector
partners to accelerate the development of therapies, vaccines, and diagnostics
that could be effective in treating patients and preventing further transmission
of the disease.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Gates Foundation, Sue Desmond-Hellmann
said, “We are working urgently with our partners to identify the most effective
ways to help them save lives now and stop transmission of this deadly
disease.
“We also want to accelerate the development of treatments, vaccines and diagnostics that can help end this epidemic and prevent future outbreaks.” Last month, Nigeria responded to the current crisis by opening an Emergency Operations Centre in Lagos, with support from the foundation and the Dangote Foundation. The centre has used expertise and lessons from the national polio program, to be at the centre of an aggressive push by the federal and state governments to contain the spread of the virus, and there is cautious optimism that this prompt action may have helped avert a broader outbreak.
As additional grants are made, the foundation will provide further details on its funding commitments to on-the-ground operations and to research and
development for Ebola drugs, vaccines, and diagnostics.
The foundation which is noted as one of the world’s biggest donors during emergencies has so far contributed more than $10m to fight the Ebola virus epidemic, including $5m to the World Health Organisation for emergency
operations, research and development assessments.
It has also contributed $5m to the United States of America’s fund for the United Nations Children’s Fund to support efforts in Liberia, Sierra Leone and
Guinea to purchase essential medical supplies, coordinate response activities, and provide at-risk communities with life-saving health information.
