PoliticsTinubu’s Hangout Reaches Out To Motherless Home With Food Items by aguele(op): 4:56am On May 27, 2023
In a  show of love and support to president-elect, Bola Tinubu, the leadership of pre-inauguration hangout has distributed food items, to hundreds of children belonging to charitable homes in Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

While distributing the items during the Day 61 hangout of the supporters and admirers of the president-elect, the convener, Tosin Adeyanju said it has always been the desire of the hangout to reach out to the needy and support others with the love Asiwaju has profess.

The beneficiaries were full of joy as they sang and danced in appreciation.

One of them and a boy of 15-year old, Rabiu Usman, said his joy is immeasurable as the gesture couldn’t have come at a better time. He stressed that the food gift will go a long way to help them.

The FCT chapter of Performing Musicians Employers' Association Of Nigeria (PMAN) were also at the Unity Fountain to add more colors to the 61-day-old Hangout.

The members who performed to entertained attendees described the emergence of Asiwaju as a gift from God.

They also commended the organizers for creating enabling environment at the hangout for the growth of more musical star by way of the activities that accommodate performing artists.

PoliticsGroup Fingers Gov Uzodinma, NYSC Staff In Attempt To Use Judiciary To Sabotage E by aguele(op): 3:35pm On May 25, 2023
*Group fingers Gov Uzodinma, NYSC staff in attempt to use judiciary to sabotage Enugu Gov-elect's mandate*

Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State and some top officials of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) are allegedly behind a plot to use the judiciary to sabotage the mandate of Enugu State Governor-elect, Peter Mbah.

The Citizens Arise for Democracy (CAD), which raised this alarm at a press conference on Thursday in Abuja, said the plan is to use the backdoor to impose a governor against the people's will.

Speaking to the press, the group's convener, Okwa Dan, said this is a well-thought strategy by Uzodinma to expand his influence in the south-east and would subsequently assert himself as the de-facto leader of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the region.

Dan noted that this is the second phase of Uzodinma's plan having already secured a ruling from a Federal High Court in Kano State that nullified the election of Abia State Governor-elect, Dr Alex Otti of the Labour Party.

According to him, the Imo State governor has not only compromised the NYSC, but he has also taken his desperation to the judiciary.

"We are concerned that Uzodinma will export this criminality to the national level if he is allowed to get away with this usurpation of public office. Nigerians must think of the implication of people like Uzodinma using senior officials of the NYSC to steal public mandates. It means the nation will one day get to the point where votes would no longer count because some criminal-minded people have perfected how to abuse government institutions for hijacking power," Dan said.

The Citizens Arise for Democracy, therefore urged the people of Enugu State to be "vigilant to curtail the shenanigans of Uzodinma and his associates", calling on them "rise to the occasion and reject this attempt by the Imo state governor to colonialize their state. "

The group also urged the law enforcement agencies to immediately investigate the relationship between the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Yisha’u Ahmed and Uzodinma.

"Such investigation should include their call records and those of their associates to establish that there were indeed instances of communication between them. We also want the anti-graft agencies to review the bank accounts of the NYSC DG and those of the senior staff of the NYSC given the huge sum, the $3 million, that was reportedly paid to induce them to act in the manner they did," the statement added.

The group, however, appealed to the APC to caution Uzodinma while advising him to seek other less destructive means with socially acceptable and legally compliant means of growing himself into a geo-political leader for the party.

Politics10th NASS: Beware Of Ugochinyere’s Antics - Group Warns Opposition Members-elect by aguele(op): 1:20pm On May 25, 2023
The Citizens Centre for Democracy Awareness (CCDA) has drawn the attention of opposition lawmakers to the antics of Ikenga Ugochinyere, the member-elect for Ideato South and North federal consistency of Imo State.

In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Dr. Emmanuel Ani, the Centre described Ugochinyere as a serial scam artist who has taken his mischievous craft to the House of Representatives.

The Centre gave this warning following Ugochinyere's pronouncement that 63 opposition members-elect had endorsed Tajudeen Abbas and Benjamin Kalu for Speaker and Deputy of the 10th National Assembly.

Dr Ani said Ugochinyere has over the years demonstrated questionable character, with a penchant for deception and blackmail, especially under the guise of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP).

According to him, not only is Ugochinyere a threat to the National Assembly and everything the legislature represents but also to the nation's democracy.

"Ugochinyere’s claim of the endorsement of Mr. Tajudeen Abass for the Speakership of the House of Representatives by a so-called 62 members-elect under his control is a sad development knowing fully well that Ugochinyere has no other person in his phantom 'group'. It is for this reason that members-elect of the opposition political parties must distance themselves from his fraudulent claims," Dr. Ani said.

"We sound this alarm because of the extreme measures that Ugochinyere has been known to adopt in pursuing any agenda he sets his mind on. He has in the past fabricated stories to tarnish public officeholders to extort them and even went as far as staging attacks on his own home before the elections to win sympathy votes. So, the extent he will go to prove the phantom endorsement should leave the opposition members-elect fearing for their lives.

"In addition, any member-elect worth the votes of their constituents will urgently disown Ugochinyere, a terrorist sympathizer and supporter of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who is using their purported endorsement of Abbas and Kalu as a test case for how he will use the House to buy legitimacy for the terrorists that have decimated the southeast of the country."

The Citizens Centre for Democracy Awareness, therefore, warned Ugochinyere to stop using the name of the opposition to broker his deceitful deals in the country.

"He must respect the fact that the members-elect whose reputation he is tarnishing are the representatives of other constituencies who should not be distracted from the errand their constituents sent them. We demand, on this note, that he should keep his scam and pro-terrorist ideology out of the National Assembly," Ani warned.

"While we urge the relevant law enforcement agencies to keep Ikenga Ugochinyere under close watch because of the threat he has demonstrated himself to pose to democracy in Nigeria; we appeal to the people of Ideato South and North federal consistency to begin perfecting the process of beginning the recall of Ugochinyere from the very day he is inaugurated because he has already demonstrated he is not going to the National Assembly to represent them."

Politics96-gun Salute To An Unrelenting Nationalist, E. K. Clark At 96 by aguele(op):
The sublime and evergreen words of Williams Shakespeare “All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts; a justification therefrom alludes to a man who truly, justly, consciously and genuinely in his time has played a million and one parts as a distinct Nigerian lawyer, renowned political figure who is a symbol of Nationalism. A distinctive personality, global asset in public leadership, both within and beyond the shores of this great country. A man of distinct wisdom, inquired and sought by several governments, as an official appointee and otherwise for the contribution of his esteemed quota to the development of the country, since the days of General Yakubu Gowon up till today, an unrelenting fighter and comprehensively a builder of not just men but structures as well the founder of Edwin Clark University.

Papa’s life aptly illustrates a charge made by Williams Shakespeare that ‘Be not afraid of greatness: some are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them’.

The existence of this rare gem and living legend radiates greatness that’s truly, largely and chiefly exists in his DNA, not only since birth, but as evident in his accomplishments.

This would further be appreciated looking through his enviable pedigree and intimidating profile of this man of valor who was once a Commissioner for Education, Finance and Establishment in the old Bendel State in the 70s, Federal Minister for Information and National Orientation during the civil war till 1975, when General Gowon’s regime was terminated. Also, as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 1983, and today, indisputable leader of the Ijaw Nation among others.

Knowing and having a rare privilege of being closely associated with His Eminence, Senator, Chief, Sir, Dr, Edwin Kiagbodo Clark for about a score of years has not only aided in grooming me, but has laid within me an imprint of this great personality in my career as a Legal Practitioner, as some of his enormous principles and unquenchable thirsts and foresights till date still guide in some of my approaches to becoming greater daily.

Sire, on this day, of your 96th birthday anniversary, I join the conglomerate of your children, associates and the world at large to celebrate you, the man of the moment, the voice to the voiceless, the peace in the turbulent storm, the quantum of social justice and the definition of a worthy patriot.

PIn accordance to the words of the holy Bible in Psalm 90:12 “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom”. I pray that your wisdom will never diminish as you age, that the Almighty who has kept you this far will further preserve you with long life, good health, continuous joy and all-round blessings in accordance to your heart desires.

PoliticsMiddle Belt Leaders, Stakeholders Write Tinubu, Endorse Gov Simon Lalong For SGF by aguele(op): 5:32pm On May 24, 2023
The Renewed Middle Belt Forum (RMBF) has endorsed Governor Simon Lalong for the position of Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) in the incoming administration.

In a letter dated May 22 and co-signed by its President Bala Mohammed and Secretary-General, Dr. Abu James Abu, the group said the stakeholders and leaders from the zone unanimously backed the Plateau Governor for the job.

The RMBF said they came to this conclusion after a thorough analysis of all the eminently qualified sons and daughters of the Middle Belt and their impact on governance.

The letter noted that Lalong stands out owing to his loyalty, impeccable track record, experience, and pedigree, adding that he is the highest ranking Middle-Belt son in government.

The group admitted that although they expect the Plateau governor to represent their interests, his antecedence shows that the nation comes first.

According to the letter, the group said Lalong would be a worthy ambassador of the Middle Belt and ensure that his principal Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu fulfills every promise he made to Nigerians.

The Renewed Middle Belt Forum, therefore, urged the President-elect to appoint Governor Lalong as the SGF.

It said the appointment will quell the tension among the Christian faithful over the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket and the well-established marginalization of the Middle Belt.

"The Renewed Middle Belt Forum wishes to congratulate the President-Elect ahead of his inauguration. May 29th will be historic in so many ways and we believe this will be the beginning of a new dawn for the nation," the letter said.

"We are confident that this administration will hit the ground running immediately with the appointments of cabinet members. On this note, we wish to convey the resolutions of the relevant stakeholders and leaders from the Middle Belt.

"Your Excellency, you will agree that the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the APC caused a measure of uneasiness among Christians. It is also visible that the Middle Belt has again been shrugged off from the scheme of things, especially after the zoning arrangement of the ruling party for the National Assembly leadership was made public.

"Indeed competence, integrity, and excellence should be the main considerations for appointment. That is why we are putting forward a man who ticks all the boxes for the position of the SGF.

"Governor Lalong will not only settle the perceived religious and sectional bias, but he is also a man who has over the years displayed exceptional capacity, sagacity, and effective leadership. He is a unifier and detribalized Nigerian with an incredible track record and pedigree.

"The Middle Forum believes that Governor Lalong will do a thorough job as the SGF and ensure that this administration pursues all its policies and programs aimed at the peace and progress of the nation".
PoliticsTinubu’s Hangout: Asari Dokubo, Popular Archbishop, Other Big Wings Attend Day 5 by aguele(op): 4:33am On May 23, 2023
A major political figure of the Ijaw ethnic group in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, Asari Dokubo and the Archbishop of the African Church, Abuja, Peter Ogunmuyiwa, Col Abdulmumuni Isa and Bishop Adegbite led other Nigerians to the Day 57 of pre-inauguration hangout of the supporters and admirers of the president-elect, Bola Tinubu.

Dokubo led the team of Niger Delta supporters to Unity Fountain, Abuja, on Monday, with cultural song of Ijaw chanting ‘Asiwaju na good man’

He described the victory of the president-elect as a timely intervention to solving all of the nation’s problems.

Part of the activities that was also observed was the prayer session for the nation and president-elect and his vice, ahead of Monday’s inauguration.

Archbishop, Peter Ogunmuyiwa, who led the session described Tinubu as a hope sent by God to Renew the Hope of Nigerians.

He further called on Nigerians to support the incoming government and further assured that the government will do more than the expectations of Nigerians in making the nation rise again.

PoliticsReps-elect Agbese Faults Buhari's Last-minute Appointments, Calls For Probe by aguele(op): 6:38am On May 21, 2023
Chief Philip Agbese, a House of Reps member-elect, has condemned President Muhammadu Buhari's last-minute appointments.

Speaking to newsmen on Friday in Abuja, the All Progressives Congress stalwart called on the incoming administration of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to probe the flawed processes.

With few days to the end of his tenure, President Buhari has embarked on an appointment spree with no less than 10 new officials confirmed in the last week alone.

The President also approved the immediate resumption of the North East Development Commission’s (NEDC) board without confirmation by the Senate.

In reaction, Agbese said these appointments should have been left for the new administration to handle.

According to him, the last-minute jobs will only cause serious cracks in the civil service and potentially lead to looting and diversion of public funds.

Agbese noted that President Buhari is causing more damage for his successor, compounding the challenges that he had already created with speedy appointments without due progress.

The member-elect representing Ado, Okpokwu and Ogbadibo federal constituency said for instance the confirmation of the AGF was done without recourse to the rules and numerous petitions on ground against the process.

"I am worried by the current appointment spree by the president. It is on record that over 20 new appointments have been made since Bola Tinubu was declared President-Elect," Agbese said.

"The recent confirmation of Toyin Madein to a sensitive position of the Accountant General of the Federation with just few days left to the end of this administration rises many questions. Why the rush? Are they hiding something?"

Quoting from Chapter 6 Part 1 Section 171 of the Constitution, Agbese admitted that the president holds certain powers to appoint and fire public officers.

He, however, said when it is done in a controversial manner, there would be serious cause for concern as in the case of the AGF.

"Even if we pardon the president for rushing to appoint Maiden, what about the latest declaration that the new NEDC board should resume work without confirmation by the Senate? The President has undermined the powers of the legislature, just as he has serially abused the judiciary.

"Again, why the rush? It is clear that the current government is deliberately building up obstacles and road blocks for Tinubu. They are giving room for chaos and huge vacuum in governance, potentially opening the doors for massive looting.

"We are aware that these appointments are nothing short of political compensation for loyalists and apparently has nothing to do with competence. At a time where Buhari would have at least left a legacy by cutting the cost of governance, he is dishing out appointments like admission.

"There is an even bigger problem; the illicit award of contracts worth over N3.7tn in the last two months. The incoming administration must probe these scandalous appointments and arrangements".
PoliticsOpinion: Search For New SGF: A Case For Gov Lalong by aguele(op): 11:51pm On May 16, 2023
By Mustapha Musa

A successful administration is the product of individual cabinet members. While the President/ Commander-in-Chief has the final say, certain decisions are influenced by his closest allies, one of whom is the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

Enter Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State. Although a quiet, gentle, and unassuming figure, Lalong is well-experienced, suited, and equipped for the tasks of monitoring and coordinating the implementation of government policies and programs.

Undoubtedly, the president-elect, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu has over the decades established himself as a visionary, focused, committed, patriotic, and relatively fair-minded political icon with incredible public relations and human capital development ability. While the incoming administration is yet to navigate through the scary storm of the National Assembly leadership, there is the belief that it would ease past the rigors of cabinet selection.

An important position that is central to the affairs of the nation is the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. Presently, there is a feeling of marginalization in the North Central region given that they have neither produced a president nor the Vice-president since the beginning of the Fourth Republic. Therefore, it is only politically and logically right that the region is placated with the position of the SGF.

With the current power play and permutations for the National Assembly leadership, it is almost unlikely that the North Central region would get either the Senate president or the speaker position. So, the best bet for the incoming President and the APC leadership is to compensate the region with this prized position of SGF.

Candidly, this appointment would do a whole lot to show the region that it is valued in the current political calculations. It is true that when food is ready, all manner of hands struggle to partake in the eating; both the idle and others that were negatively critical of the process that led to its preparation. By this contextual illustration, it is logical that the President-elect and the APC leadership appoint someone who has paid the ultimate dues of ensuring the party's victory at the polls despite traces of repulsive remarks within and outside the APC family.

It is not mere gainsaying to emphatically state that Governor Simon Bako Lalong, erstwhile presidential campaign council Director General of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and Governor of Plateau state successfully midwifed the victory the APC is savoring today and the consequent emergence of the President-elect in the February 18th election. Not only that Governor Lalong committed to the Tinubu ideal, but he also ensured that out of the five North Central states, four voted massively for the president-elect, this is aside from his home state was somewhat gravely polarized by ethnic profiling which Governor Lalong vehemently opposed, and in effect prompted a protest vote from the people. Good enough, Governor Lalong has since recovered from the political gang-up and has been active in ensuring that democratic governance in Nigeria is sustained.

Born on May 5th, 1963, he is a native of Ajikamai in the Shendam local government area. Governor Lalong had his primary and secondary education in his hometown. He obtained his first school leaving certificate in 1977, and level certificate in 1982. He would then attend the School of Preliminary Studies in Keffi for his A Level and later proceeded to the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria ABU, where he bagged a Bachelor's degree in Law in 1990. He attended the Lagos branch of the Nigeria Law School and was called to the bar in 1991. He also holds a master's degree in Law (LLM) from the University of Jos.

In 1999, he contested and won the Shendam state constituency Assembly seat on the platform of the People's Democratic Party and was subsequently made speaker. As head of Parliament, Lalong's ingenuity and rare leadership qualities earned him the record of the longest-serving speaker in the state and possibly the entire North Central region (2000-2006). Enthralled by his administrative acumen, his fellow speakers across the 36 states in Nigeria elected him twice as chairman, of the Nigeria Conference of Speakers. He contested for the Governor of Plateau state in the April 2015 elections and won on the platform of the APC. From the foregoing, Governor Simon Bako Lalong is best suited for the position of the SGF in the incoming administration of Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu.

His distinguished career as a politician, Lawyer, and public servant presents him as someone vast and equipped having presided over the legislative arm of government as well as executive Governor of a state. He will certainly be the seed that would balance the current uncertain Nigerian Political pendulum if appointed the SGF.

PoliticsNASS Leadership: Group Lauds APC Over Decision To Revisit Zoning by aguele(op): 8:02am On May 16, 2023
A pro-democracy organisation, Rebirth Africa Initiative (RAI), has applauded the President-elect, Senator Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu, and the All Progressives Congress over their decision to revisit the zoning template for the 10th National Assembly.

Recall that a barrage of criticism had trailed the ruling party's National Working Committee proposed zoning arrangement for the leadership of the incoming assembly.

The APC had last week Monday endorsed a former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godwill Akpabio, (from Akwa Ibom State in South-south) for Senate President, and Tajudeen Abbas (from Kaduna State in North-west) for Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Announcing the zoning formula, after an NWC meeting in Abuja, National Publicity Secretary of the party, Felix Morka, also confirmed Senator Barau Jubrin (North-west) as Deputy Senate President, and Ben Kalu (South-east) as Deputy Speaker of the House.

However, the APC appears to have yielded to the calls of stakeholders by promising to revisit the proposed arrangement.

In reaction, the Rebirth Africa Initiative said the ruling party has taken the best step to address the yearnings of its members who have demanded proper consultation.

A statement signed by Dr. Hamza Sanusi said this decision will quell inevitable crisis and tension in the party, especially with the opposition aiming to take advantage.

Sanusi further said the pronouncement will potentially bring equity, justice, and fairness to all party members.

He, therefore, tasked the party leadership to sit down and take a conscious decision to do things differently.

According to Sanusi, the APC must embrace the principles of dialogue and negotiation, adding that they should talk to all the zones and ask them what they want.

"We welcome the decision of the APC to revisit its zoning arrangement for the 10th NASS as the best way to go," the statement said in part.

"The previous position of the party had given rise to some unavoidable controversies, rancour, and a potential crisis. It was as though the party set itself up for destruction.

"But by accepting to take another look at this template, the APC has demonstrated that it is a listening party, interested in peace and progress.

"We are proud of the President-elect and the APC leadership. In the face of intimidation and oppression, they have made the right decision"

Consequently, the Rebirth Africa Initiative urged the APC in its new template to cede the Speakership position to the North Central.

Sanusi said the region has been grossly neglected despite its overwhelming support for the party.

"For the sake of inclusion, equity, and justice, we are appealing to the APC to consider the North Central for the position of Speaker," the statement added.

"The region has suffered massive neglect in recent years despite its support for the APC. If indeed the party wants to get it right, then they should do the right thing".
Politics200 Csos Endorse Gov Lalong For SGF by aguele(op): 10:25am On May 15, 2023
No fewer than 200 civil society organizations have backed Governor Simon Lalong to emerge as Secretary to the Government of the Federation in the incoming administration.

The groups, under the auspices of Civil Rights Action for Democracy, said the Plateau governor is best suited for the job.

According to a statement by Dr. Andrew Idoko, it's National Coordinator, the CSOs said Lalong ticks all the boxes, including zoning.

"A lot has been said about the zoning arrangement of the APC about balancing along the lines of religion and ethnicity. This has indeed generated a discourse in the polity. As it stands, all regions in the country have been identified and earmarked for leadership positions, but the North Central," he said.

"As a body devoted to the ideals of democracy, it is our view that the North Central region was instrumental to the success of the APC in the presidential elections. The leadership acumen of the Governor of Plateau State and Chairman of the Presidential Campaign Council was also instrumental to the party's overall success despite the numerous hurdles that were before it.

"Governor Simon Lalong displayed a rare leadership style that emphasized competence and dedication to the sustenance of democracy in Nigeria. His plans and programs, even as the governor of Plateau State in the last eight years, speak volumes of a man on a mission to contribute to the country's socioeconomic development.

"It is also common knowledge that the country is desirous of such individuals who are passionate and committed to democracy and sustainable growth and development.

"It is our opinion that the APC as a party must, as a matter of urgency and necessity, encourage such credible leaders to continue to contribute their quota to the development of Nigeria through ways and means possible.

"The APC as a party must also ensure that the North Central region is adequately compensated for loyalty and dedication to the party as exemplified during and after the general elections in the country.

"One of the ways this could be achieved is the appointment of Governor Simon Lalong as the Secretary of the Government of the Federation (SGF) to reward the North Central region for their loyalty all the while and also to tap into his wealth of experience in our quest for sustainable growth and development.

"It must be stated that having Governor Simon Lalong as the SGF would go a long way in addressing the concerns of the North Central region about inclusion in governance on the heels that the proposed leadership of the National Assembly didn't accommodate the North Central region for inexplicable reasons.

"The implication of a non-action in this regard is that the APC as a party does not regard the numerous contribution of the North Central to its electoral success. Despite the stiff opposition to the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the APC, the North Central rallied support and voted massively for the APC.

"This indicates absolute loyalty and the dexterity of Governor Simon Lalong to ensure that all hands were on deck to bring about the needed electoral victory for the party. "

The Civil Rights Action for Democracy, therefore, urged the ruling party to include the North Central in the scheme of affairs as the incoming administration takes shape.

"Let us emphasize that the suitability of Governor Simon Lalong as the SGF cannot be overemphasized. He is a dedicated and hardworking party leader who worked tirelessly and round the clock to ensure the party's victory at the polls," the statement added.

"These attributes and many more have prepared him for leadership at the national level, hence our endorsement and recommendation for his appointment as SGF to serve as the engine room of the incoming administration and continue to render selfless service to Nigeria in our quest for sustainable growth and development.

"Governor Simon Lalong is a rare breed that must be harnessed for the good of the country. His antecedence speaks volumes of a man who is passionate and committed to Nigeria's sustainable growth and development. As such, it is imperative that his appointment as SGF would indeed benefit the country.

"The North Central region would also feel a sense of belonging, thereby quelling any form of discontent that might arise about inclusion in government. As a coalition of civil society groups, we trust that the incoming administration will heed our counsel as it settles down for business.

"Governor Simon Lalong is indeed a better fit for the position of SGF, and this much he has demonstrated over time in leadership. "
Politics*NASS Leadership: 500 Csos Threaten Massive Protests Over The Imposition Of Akpa by aguele(op): 7:34pm On May 10, 2023
*NASS Leadership: 500 CSOs threaten massive protests over the imposition of Akpabio, Abbas*

About 500 pro-democracy civil society groups in Nigeria have vowed to hold massive protests across the country to reject the All Progressives Congress's imposition of principal officers for the 10th National Assembly.

The groups said the foisting of Godswill Akpabio and Tajudeen Abbas down the throats of parliamentarians for Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives respectively is unconstitutional and undemocratic.

The CSOs made their displeasure known at a press conference on Wednesday in Abuja.

Speaking on behalf of the groups, Hon. Dauda Yakubu said what the APC has done is to coronate some individuals who would not necessarily earn the acceptance of their colleagues.

"We were shocked to read reports that the National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressive Congress (APC) has come up with a zoning template and even went further to rub salt on injury by attaching names to the positions of principal officers – Senate President, Deputy Senate President, Speaker, Deputy Speaker and all other offices of the National Assembly," the statement said.

"It is on record that the APC kicked against such an arrangement in the past, describing it as a hijack of democracy. It is therefore ironic that the persons in APC who rejected the imposition of leadership on the National Assembly are either ominously quiet now or are the ones undermining our democratic tenets.

"The imposition of leaders is nothing but a coronation of some individuals who would not necessarily earn the acceptance of their colleagues, which implies that they also will not enjoy the acceptance of the constituents of their colleagues."

The CSOs believe that the outgoing Speaker in particular, Femi Gbajiamila, is desperate to foist his loyalists on the Reps.

The statement added: "We are aware that the outgoing Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila is a key factor in this ongoing rape of democracy. It is unbecoming that Rt. Hon. Gbajabiamila, who has been one of the greatest beneficiaries of our democracy, could be the one machinating to sabotage the institution that defines him in Nigerian politics.

"Had usurpers dictated the composition of the leadership of the 9th National Assembly he certainly would not occupy the position of the Speaker today and would consequently not have the clout to attempt imposing a leadership on the National Assembly.

"This move becomes even more abhorrent with the realization that Rt. Hon. Gbajabiamila is on his way to becoming part of the executive in one form or the other. He has been tipped as a potential Chief-of-Staff to the incoming president, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu. The implication of his coronating the leadership of the National Assembly while assuming an executive position is that he would erase the separation of powers between the executive and the legislature and creation of a rubber-stamp parliament.

"A rubber-stamp National Assembly is precisely what the country does not need currently bearing in mind the extent of reform-oriented legislation and oversight that is needed in the months and years ahead. Nigerians need a parliament that they can hold accountable and not one that answers to a kingmaker in the person of Rt. Hon. Gbajabiamila."

The CSOs, therefore, urged "men of good conscience within the APC and conscientious Nigerians including those in the opposition to rise in defence of Nigeria's democracy."

The statement further reads: "They should come out and add their voices to the demand that the members and senators-elect should be allowed the independence granted by the principles of separation of power to decide on the leadership of the 10th National Assembly.

"The Coalition of Pro-democracy CSOs further calls on Nigerians and the international community to start watching the APC, particularly Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila over his anti-democratic moves. The party should be informed in clear terms that its partisan interests should not be escalated for sabotaging our democracy".

The CSOs, however, vowed to embark on mass protests should the ruling party uphold its coronation of leaders for the National Assembly.

Politics10th Assembly Speakership: NDF Condemns Apc's Appointment Of Principal Officers by aguele(op): 8:51pm On May 09, 2023
10th Assembly Speakership: NDF condemns APC's appointment of principal officers

The National Democratic Front (NDF) has condemned the All Progressives Congress National Working Committee's choice of principal officers for the 10th National Assembly.

In a statement signed by Dr. Sani Gwandu, the NDF said the party's zoning template is the most grievous injustice to the people of the North Central who are being taken for granted in the political equation of the country.

Recall that the APC yesterday confirmed the endorsement of former minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godwill Akpabio, as Senate president and Tajudeen Abbas as Speaker of the House of Representatives for the 10th National Assembly.

The NWC also confirmed the endorsement of Senator Barau Jubrin (North West) as deputy Senate president and Ben Kalu (South East) as deputy Speaker of the House.

However, this announcement was met with stern resistance and opposition by both new and returning legislators.

And Dr. Gwandu believes the lawmakers have every right to be aggrieved as the zoning arrangement doesn't reflect their interests and that of Nigerians.

He said the election of presiding officers of the National Assembly is the exclusive business of the legislators-elect and not the party.

While noting that consensus requires discussion by critical stakeholders and wide consultations, Gwandu added that the APC intends to hijack the Parliament by imposing its leaders.

He further revealed that the most critical elements of competence, capacity, and acceptability were ignored by the ruling party which has again marginalized some regions.

The NDF, therefore, condemned the endorsement in totality and urged other patriotic Nigerians including the legislators to do likewise.

It further said that the announcement was more or less a coronation exercise that didn't take into consideration the feelings of members-elect of either the Senate or the Reps.
Politics10th NASS: Why Northern Lawmakers Are Out Against Femi Gbajabiamila's Candidate by aguele(op): 12:20pm On May 09, 2023
As the race for the Federal House of Representatives speaker hots up, fresh facts have emerged on why northern leaders are against the aspiration of Hon. Tajudeen Abass.

Abbas who passes as one of the high-ranking lawmakers in the House is said to be of south west extraction and a stooge of outgoing Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila.

It was further revealed that there have been dissention from several quarters regarding Hon Abass passing himself off as representing the northern interest as speaker of the House of Representatives.

According to a source who pleaded anonymity, the northern power brokers are poised to challenge the choice of Hon Tajudeen Abass.

A source who craved anonymity because of the fear of repercussion said: " It would be a difficult run for Gbaja and his other sponsors. Tajudeen is not a core northerner and can’t represent our interest.

" We are in the know of the alliance with the Speaker (Gbajabiamila) to inflict Tajudeen on us. But I can tell you that plans are underway to present and endorse a credible northern candidate."

Another source, who is an aide to a well-respected northern political leader, maintained that Hon Tajudeen Abass needs to have the support of the north in his political aspiration.

He said, "I can tell you that Hon Tajudeen Abass will not get the support from stakeholders in the north. As a first, his origin is in question and his competence, integrity and track record is nothing to write home about.

" This is a sensitive matter and has dominated the discourse in several fora I have attended with my boss. Surprisingly, the name featured prominently is another ranking House member, whose leadership will project the national interest while safeguarding the north as well. And the support is overwhelming. Whatever it is worth, this preferred candidate stands a better chance of getting support from northern stakeholders. "

This statement was corroborated by recent endorsements of other speaker hopefuls by several northern oriented groups. The endorsements do not include Hon. Tajudeen Abass.

According to a source in the leadership of one of the groups, the lack of support for Hon Abass is not unconnected with his lack of track record and utter rejection by respected northern individuals and groups.

"We were convinced Hon Tajudeen Abass does not make the list because of his lack of track record in the House of Representatives. It is a struggle to see any footprint of his in terms of contributions to the growth and unity of the country.

"You only need to look at his lack of appeal across the board and the likes. Undoubtedly, he is not even prepared for the job. I see how the only endorsement he has is that of a dictatorial state governor. He has not gotten the endorsement of key figures in the northern political landscape. "

When pressed further on why he vehemently dismissed the chances of Hon Tajudeen Abass, he said the lawmaker is a selfish politician who doesn't represent the interest of his colleagues and Nigerians.

"Hon Tajudeen Abass is not a sell-able aspirant. The question is, do the northerners see him as one of them? This has been a topic for several years and won't stop anytime soon. The man is just an extension of Gbaja, selfish and greedy."

A lawmaker of Northern origin who didn't want his name in print stated that Hon Tajudeen Abass is not considered a Northerner.

" Honestly, Hon Tajudeen should not ridicule himself. The northern legislators are behind Hon Aliyu Muktar Betera. It won't work because we want someone we can call our own, not some puppet.

"The National Assembly is not Kaduna state. He has to accept this fact and stop all the manoeuvrings. We are resolute in this regard. There is no way Hon Tajudeen Abass will emerge as a speaker without the support of the northern caucus in the House of Representatives."

The Enugu State Government has applauded the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) for its recent interventions in the state.

The state government made the commendation through the Third National Fadama Development Additional Financing Project.

The REA is an agency of government with a mandate to provide all rural-dwelling Nigerians access to reliable and affordable electricity. power.

In a letter signed by Ikechukwu Jude Ogboke, the state project coordinator, the government expressed "profound gratitude to the REA for the provision of solar-powered irrigation pumps and their accessories".

The Enugu government was also appreciative of the street lights and support in building the capacity of beneficiary farmers on their utilization and maintenance.

The letter added these interventions will improve the productivity of farmers, especially during the dry season while contributing to food security in the country.
PoliticsAhmad: Lauding An Uncommon Trailblazer At REA by aguele(op): 6:24am On May 09, 2023
By Philip Agbese

This is the era of reawakening in Nigeria. The youths have clamored for a generational shift in the country's governance. The agitation is genuine, and most political parties have systematically keyed into this reawakening. The slogan is rife. The people are prepared, and the manifestation is now.

However, a silent achiever has been in the background, working tirelessly to make a difference in governance. This youthful prodigy is quiet and, most times, camera-shy. He prefers to be under the radar most times as the important thing for him is getting the job done in a manner that speaks creativity and the outside-the-box approach.

Enter the world of Ahmad Salihijo Ahmad, the Chief Executive Officer of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA). Ahmad Salihijo was appointed in 2019 by President Muhammadu Buhari to bring his wealth of experience in the private sector to bear in the Rural Electrification Agency.

The REA was established to increase electricity access to rural and under-served clusters nationwide by developing off-grid electrification strategies. And Ahamd Salihijo came in handy as a renewable energy expert with two master's degrees in development studies and project planning.

Since coming on board in 2019, it has been a tale of success stories at the REA. He proved that age was a number and hit the ground running with policies and programs that relate to achieving the strategic mandate of the agency. This much was corroborated by industry stakeholders commending his leadership style and unalloyed commitment towards the agency's objectives.

For example, one of the ways he has been able to address the myriads of challenges in rural electrification across the country was through the entrenchment of transparency and accountability in the affairs of the agency. This was a critical move considering the circumstances that led to the ouster of the previous administration of the agency.

Ahmad upon assumption of office, instituted a code of conduct that emphasized commitment and dedication in an atmosphere of transparency and accountability. This strategy paid off as all avenues for cutting corners were effectively addressed.

For example, in the last few years, the agency has strengthened its engagements with private sector developers and other key stakeholders to deploy off-grid technologies for electrification, especially for productive use and socio-economic impact in off-grid communities.

According to the youthful CEO, agriculture is one of the key areas looked at. He says, "We understand that once you provide power in agriculture, you naturally empower people to go into farming, enhancing their livelihoods. This is why beyond providing power in off-grid communities, we equally dedicate time and resources towards the productive use of energy (PUE)."

This strategy paid off with $20 million in support from the African Development Bank to invest in productive-use equipment and models in off-grid communities under the Nigeria Electrification Project (NEP) framework.

Under his watch, the REA agency is implementing the Energizing Agriculture Programme (EAP) designed to boost GDP, accelerate renewable energy use and unlock agricultural productivity in Nigeria. The EAP is a 3-year initiative activated in 2022 with support from the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), the Global Energy Alliance on People and Planet (GEAPP), and the Rockefeller Foundation, designed to enable market-led solutions while breaking the silos separating electrification and agricultural development.

An excellent example of the successes recorded under this initiative is the Olooji community, Ogun State, where a 100kWp solar hybrid mini-grid was installed. Olooji is a community that has existed for about 200 years but received energy infrastructure for the first time in 2021 through REA's intervention.

Under the Energizing Education Programme (EEP), REA has completed projects in seven universities. The World Bank and the African Development Bank have equally committed to funding phases II and III of the EEP, respectively. These didn't happen overnight. We must agree that it was a function of the demonstration of leadership by the REA under the watch of Ahmad Salihijo Ahmad.

The country needs leadership to address its socio-economic challenges, and Ahmed has provided us with an excellent example of that leadership model that public officeholders should emulate.

Those in contact with him would attest that he is a very passionate individual who has demonstrated capacity and competence in discharging his duties. He has successfully changed the narrative that the youths are unprepared for leadership.

Little wonder that the REA delivered over 95% of the NEP impact between 2020 and 2022. The NEP-SHS component is one of the fastest-growing components being implemented by the agency. These projects have also catalyzed socio-economic activities across the beneficiary communities. The NEP program, now an exemplary off-grid model in sub-Saharan Africa, has achieved about 6.7 million connections, impacting nearly 10 million Nigerians in rural communities nationwide.

The commendations have been in good supply. Industry stakeholders have described him as a messiah who, through hard work, has improved access to electricity in rural areas. He was able to dismantle the obstacles holding rural electrification across the country. Some in the know of the operations of the REA hinted that the Managing Director has consistently emphasized transparency and accountability since coming on board.

There are many lessons to learn from the leadership strides of this pathfinder. One is that the youths are ready for leadership, and two is that there will always be a way once there is a will. Ahmad Salihijo has demonstrated renewed hope for youths in the country. He is a trailblazer and no doubt a lesson in leadership. This is a thumbs up for the youths. I salute his courage and consistency.

PoliticsBetween Labo Yari‘s Climate Of Corruption And Denja Abdullahi’s Intervention (A by aguele(op): 7:58am On May 01, 2023
Between Labo Yari‘s climate of corruption and Denja Abdullahi’s intervention (A review) by Taiwo Akerele

Denja Abdullahi was the lead paper presenter at the April 2023 Mbari series organized by the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), the audience was a quality audience drawn from the literati, the academia and civil society.

Ably chaired by the past Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Prof Nuhu Yaqub, the Mbari series is fast gaining reputation as the epicenter of intellectual discourse in the beautiful city of Abuja.

Aptly titled the writer in a climate of corruption, Denja as usual took time to dissect the topic albeit succinctly to the admiration of the audience. The author is in a conundrum as he is part of the society he is expected to write about. Who watches the watchman? Who will write about the writer, Denja asks rhetorically.

Looking at the rise and contribution of Yabo Lari, the lead paper presenter reminds us of the challenges of writing in English in a highly conservative northern Nigeria at the time Labo Yari published his first book, the climate of corruption. The audience was reminded that even though northern Nigeria is a highly enlightened society, western education took snail speed in penetration.

Corruption thrives when no one speaks about it, corruption grows when it is not tamed, corruption manifests when no one writes about it, Denja thunders. The climate of corruption is when the system is compromised, when the system connives with bad elements to undermine the flow of human organization.

When the military set up MAMSER in the early 1990s, set up ICPC and EFCC and other agencies to enlighten Nigerians on the need to live an upright life, to prosecute corrupt officials and nip corruption in the bud , it was aimed at reducing the rising cases of corrupt practices, Government seldom responds to corruption cases, hence the writer feels the gap.

Denja reminds us of the books No longer at Ease (1960) by Chinua Achebe, A man of the people (1966), The beautiful ones are not yet born (1968), by Ayi Kwei Armah, A forest of flowers (1995) by Ken Saro Wiwa, Our husbands have gone mad again (1999) by Ola Rotimi.

The writer is the conscience of the vulnerable, the wretched of the earth, the writer is the voice of the voiceless, the writer is excited when his works have impact on governance, development and leadership, the writer dies a happy man when his works are productive and results oriented.

The writer is vulnerable, the writer is an endangered specie, the writer could be attacked, the writer should obviously be above board, the writer is infallible, the writer is part of the society, the writer is a victim of the climate of corruption, the writer is a friend of the people, the Achilles heel of a corrupt system is the writer.

The audience was excited when Denja encouraged writers to deploy ‘satire’ to convey, rather ‘deadly’ messages to the system. ‘When you speak the truth to a friend in satirical terms, everybody laughs, but the message is delivered, this is also closely linked to the use of theaters, drama and short plays to convey powerful messages’ At this stage the lead presenter reminded some of us of the book authored by him, Mairogo; A Buffon poetic journey around northern Nigeria (2006). In Mairogo, you could see in clear terms the social contradictions of the region, itself a microcosm of the larger Nigerian condition.

Denja concluded by asking again, who watches the watchman!!! Indeed, the writer could help navigate society out of a climate of corruption through his consistent, satirical, sharp, witty and theatrical write ups!

The pro-President-Elect groups, under the aegis of the Coalition of Asiwaju Groups in Northern Nigeria, made their position known at a press conference on Saturday in Abuja.

"It is, therefore, important that all arms of government are on the same page in ensuring that Nigerians enjoy uninterrupted dividends of democracy in our quest for sustainable growth and development.

"On this heel, we wish to lend our voice over the leadership of the legislative arm of government. This is necessary to ensure a symbiotic relationship between the executive and the legislative arms of government.

"To this end, the best hands must be supported to emerge in the leadership of the National Assembly. Consequently, the quality of aspirants that have indicated an interest in the leadership of the National Assembly has been noteworthy.

"From the list of aspirants, Hon. Aliyu Muktar Betera is the most suitable aspirant as the Speaker of the House of Representatives. He comes on board with a rich resume that speaks volumes of a loyal party man whose contributions to the sustenance of democracy in Nigeria.

"The Coalition of Asiwaju Groups in Northern Nigeria believes that with Hon Muktar Aliyu Betera as the Speaker of the House of Representatives, he will bring to bear his experience and capacity to bear in supporting the executive in enthroning credible governance in the country.

"We also recommend that the Deputy Senate President of the National Assembly be zoned to the North East and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to the North Central regions of the country.

"The Coalition of Asiwaju Groups in Northern Nigeria wishes to state in unequivocal terms that the incoming administration of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is poised to hit the ground running in delivering on the overwhelming mandate given to it by Nigerians. "

The coalition, therefore, called on APC stakeholders to support the choice of Betera for Speaker of the House of Representatives, adding that he is "credible, competent, and experienced in delivering on the task at hand for the betterment of the country."

Bilal further said: " He is also a bridge builder who will galvanize the support and buy-in of the legislative arm of government in the lofty plans and program of the incoming administration in our quest to build the Nigeria of our dreams.

"It must be stated that managing executive-legislative working relationships is imperative for good governance and service delivery. Also, the quest for peace, security, and good governance in Nigeria requires that the executive and legislature must, as a matter of urgency, work together to engineer the policy-making and implementation process that will engender good governance."

The supreme desire of man is honesty and sincerity; he desires to be thoughtful, transparent, friendly, open and simple with earnestness of purpose, to laugh and smile and extend hands of fellowship to other men, but man’s wishes have always been the bane and the root of unhappiness and ultimate failure of man.

Man advocates for love, but he gets hate in return; he desires to live peacefully, but he gets discriminated against; wants to be healthy and free of sickness but he may fall ill. He desires for others to live, yet he is wanted dead or alive?

He deals transparently, but others desire to deceive albeit without conscience. He desires to have an open-door policy, but his doors are forcefully closed by the unyielding force of mistrust.

The mosaic laws say an eye for an eye, but the good new man says turn the other chick, do man stay aloof until he gets mauled?

Should man show indifference until your lies stick on him?

Does he allow injustice to thrive for peace to reign? What a reign of impudence!!!

Should a good conscience stand chaos? Can the two co-exist? Never!

They gather in their numerous cabals, their voices seem louder and heard amongst the judges, a reminder of the ignoble ‘crucify yea’ regime, yet you stand aloof, and bereavement gets closer and closer without restrain.

Action, you must take to restrain the evil one, yes! The evil one must be restrained in his (its) efforts to cause needless havoc.

Could the biblical eye for an eye principle be relevant here?

From day one, they indeed gathered, plotted, planned, conceived, and devised evil to frustrate, undermine and bring to naught your goodness, plans and thoughts for the society.

You raised a genuine alarm, you are told to keep tranquility; all is well, the landlady echoes with the voice of peace. All is well, the good old neighbours calmly advise and they regurgitate repeatedly.

You are greeted with seeming excitement on their faces, but experience is the best teacher. You look beyond the fascia of excitement and respond with cautiousness.

Indeed, the device of the evil one has come to naught as your triumph is heard all over the length and breadth of the north and south.

Yes you triumphed. Keep calm! 🙏🏼

Census: NPC Leadership Has Failed, Should Be Replaced By A Competent Team - Reps-Member Elect Agbese

A House of Reps member-elect, Chief Philip Agbese, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to sack the leadership of the National Population Commission (NPC) over gross incompetence.

Agbese said the Nasir Isa Kwarra Commission has already shown to be incapable of achieving the mandate given by the Federal Government.

The member-elect representing Ado/ Okpokwu/ Ogbadibo federal constituency of Benue State spoke to newsmen on Friday following the postponement of the training for enumerators and supervisors.

Recall that the NPC had earlier postponed the census earlier billed for March 29 to between May 3 and May 5.

And Agbese said the Commission has not done enough in terms of training,
publicity, security, and logistics to guarantee a successful census.

According to him, the NPC is ill-prepared for the task despite the Federal Executive Council (FEC) recently approving N2.8 billion for it to procure software for the exercise.

He said there are no signs that the Commission will commence building numbering and household listing proposed for April 17 not to talk about the census.

He said: "The 2020 World Population and Housing Census Programme was approved by the Statistical Commission at its 46th session and adopted by the United Nations Economic and Social Council in resolution E/RES/2015/10.

"The Programme recognizes population and housing censuses as one of the primary sources of data needed for formulating, implementing, and monitoring policies and programs aimed at inclusive socioeconomic development and environmental sustainability.

"Data from the census are critical for good governance, policy formulation, development planning, crisis prevention, mitigation and response, social welfare programs, and business market analyses.

"However, this exercise is among the most complex and massive peacetime a nation can undertake. It requires careful planning, resourcing, and implementation – from mapping an entire country, mobilizing and training large numbers of enumerators, and conducting major public awareness campaigns, to canvassing all households, carefully monitoring census activities, and analyzing, disseminating, and using the resulting data.

"The NPC is not ready from the look of things. They have failed to conduct ordinary training personnel. While I welcome the use of high-end technology, there has really been no explanation on how it will be deployed.

"If we must get it right, then the current leadership of the NPC must make way for a more vibrant, robust, and digitally savvy team. We can't be ridiculed in the eyes of the world".

By Uche John Madu

The name rings a bell to those that understand selfless service. It also rings a bell to those who understand that leadership is about taking care of those in your charge, making the goals clear, rolling your sleeves up, and doing whatever it takes to help people win.
The general elections have come and gone, and the country is set for a new course in formulating and implementing sound policies and programmes that would address the challenges confronting the country. This would not happen by a stroke of luck but rather efforts towards ensuring that round pegs are in round roles to ensure that governance runs smoothly, especially in the sensitive legislative arm of government.
Interestingly, the leadership of the National Assembly has yet to elicit the attention it deserves because Nigerians see it as a party affair. This does not seem right. In every democratic nation, fundamental principles form the foundation of good governance. In virtually all democratic systems, there are three basic arms of government, namely the legislature, executive and judiciary. The primary role of the legislature is to make laws, the executive implements or executes such laws and the judiciary interprets the laws.
The state of the legislature has been identified as the strongest predictor of the survival of every democratic development. Legislature serves as an essential constituent for any democratic government and a significant factor in its sustenance. It has been widely acknowledged that an effective legislature is essential to democracy, the rule of law, human rights, and economic and social development. The legislature plays an important role in the life of a nation to bring about good governance.
In light of the above, we must admit that the need to get it right with the choice of leaders for the 10th National Assembly is of great importance and why competence, experience and credibility should be placed above ethnic or religious considerations. These considerations are in the country's best interest and not the interest of political parties. This much we must admit if indeed we are desirous of making any meaningful impact in the lives of the people in the incoming administration.
As at the last count, the number of those aspiring for the speakership position in the Federal House of Representatives has reached an alarming number. There are those whose aspiration is premised on regional sentiments, ethnic sentiments and also religious sentiments. And it makes a caricature of the whole process.
I belong to the school of thought that leadership should be about competence and experience, not ethnic or religious considerations. This has been a trend that yielded little in terms of delivering on the mandate over the years. Should we then continue in a trend that has not served its purpose?
We must come to terms with our reality, especially with regard to the leadership of the 10th National Assembly. Those advocating for ethnic and religious considerations are not in tune with the enormity of the task. Do we need such now? The answer is no. We need leaders with a national outlook, armed with the requisite experience and strength of character, to lead in a manner that would unite and bring about meaningful development at this critical point of our existence.
This reality is gradually gaining traction in our political life, which is a good omen. As a development expert, I have taken time to scrutinize the credentials of all aspirants that have indicated an interest in the speakership position and came to the conclusion that amongst the lot, Hon Aminu Sani Jaji fits the bill perfectly.
My conclusion is hinged on his antecedent and commitment to sustaining democracy and good governance over the years. Hon Aminu Sani Jaji, the former House of Representatives Committee on Intelligence and Internal Security chairman, is familiar with leadership. He is such a passionate leader who has, on several occasions demonstrated his grasp of issues related to the national question of sustainable growth and development.
He is different from your regular politician who grandstands to curry favour from the electorates. He is a brave heart whose contributions to the sustenance of democracy in Nigeria have been applauded in several forums. He has braved the odds to speak out on crucial national issues regardless of the vested interest phenomenon.
He has built bridges across the divide, reinforcing his cosmopolitan nature and desire to see a strong ad united Nigeria. Make no mistakes; he is not a saint. You could accuse him of several things, but one can’t be his passion for standing on the side of truth and the people.
I am privileged to have interacted with him on several occasions. And one thing stands out; he is a dispassionate individual who speaks power to the truth. Highly detribalized and passionate about good governance. This much can be seen in his contributions on the floor of the green chambers that have elicited tremendous respect from colleagues and stakeholders in the Nigerian project.
That he has signified interest in the speakership position should give well-meaning Nigerians a cause for celebration because he would bring to bear his years of experience as a sound legislator in leading the hallowed green chambers of the National Assembly. Therefore, the APC leadership should heed the counsel of ceding the speakership position to competence and experience.
This is not the time for ethnic and religious experiments. The country is on the brink, and our watchword should be nothing short of the best. As mentioned earlier, Hon Aminu Sani Jaji rings a bell to those who understand selfless service by clarifying the goals and then rolling your sleeves up and doing whatever it takes to help people win. And with Hon Aminu Sani Jaji as speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, the people will win.

APC INTEGRITY CAUCUS RAISES ALARM OVER PLOT BY OPPOSITION PARTIES TO TAKE OVER KANO AND THE ENTIRE NORTH WEST ZONE FROM APC

The APC Integrity Caucus(AIC), a coalition of Stakeholders of the party drawn from the National Assembly and Business Community has raised the alarm over what it called a desperate attempt by opposition parties to take over Kano and the entire North West Zone from the APC.
Speaking with newsmen on the incessant calls by members of the opposition parties, especially the New Nigeria People's Party(NNPP) on the APC leadership not to zone the Senate Presidency to the North West, the group said it was part of a grand design to deny the zone of a powerful government position so as to dig in, expand membership and ultimately take over Kano and the entire region in 2027.

The group's Spokesperson who addressed the press on behalf the group, Hon Musa Ahmed Jauro Dutse said the whole essence of these opposition parties crying more than the bereaved on the Zoning issue is simply to mislead the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other leaders of the APC into jettisoning the North West for them to overrun.
"We have uncovered their grand plots to engage in massive propaganda to demarket the North West Zone from the Senate Presidency race because of their desperate and selfish interest in taking over the zone- In the absence of a strong political office holder in the mould of the Senate President-That is why we are exposing them so that our leaders like the President-Elect will not be carried away by their antics.
The North West gave the highest votes to our party in the Presidential election and that justice and fairness demands that the zone be compensated for the feat. Instead, they are busy mischievously plotting against the APC in other to take over the zone in 2027.We must resist them, we must not allow them to succeed in their desperate plans. The North West must not be pushed aside in the race, rather the zone should be compensated for being the highest voting block. The Zone needs to be supported to have the Senate President’s slot so it can be put in the best position to do more for APC in 2027 God willing".
The group advised that since the South West had taken the Presidency and North East, the Vice-Presidency, it was only expedient to allow the North West take the Senate Presidency. The North West is the fulcrum of the Hausa/Fulani people of Nigeria. Whatever happens to the North West, has direct or indirect effect(s)on all the Hausa Fulani people of Nigeria;
So if the Senate Presidency is zoned to the North West,it can be said to have been zoned to the entirety of the Hausa Fulani people of Nigeria",the group stated.
The group re-stated its full support for the candidature of Senator Barau I.Jibrin for the presidency of the 10th Senate for he has the requisite competence, cognate experience, capacity and above all is the highest ranking senator among the senators in the zone.
Politics10th National Assembly; We Salute The Unity Of Our Governors For APC Consensus S by aguele(op): 2:03pm On Apr 07, 2023
10th National Assembly; We salute the Unity of our Governors for APC Consensus Speakership Candidate

As the race for the leadership of the 10th National begins to gather momentum, we are delighted by the determination of our Governors and stakeholder as they begin to express their determination to prevent the ugly scenarios of the past, where the National Assembly, may be one, which may be working at cross-purpose with the Executive arm, a situation, which can impede of the progress of the country.

Since the end of the 2023 General elections, individuals and groups have intensified efforts, at seeking stakeholders support, particularly in getting the endorsement of State Governors, who are believed, to command the loyalty, of the elected National Assembly members from their state.

Of important note, is the emergence of Aspirants for the Speaker-ship of the House of Representatives, which is is set to be inaugurated in less than 60 days from now.

Against sponsored media reports, particularly in the social media, that some state Governors, have endorsed the candidature of the current Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Ahmed Idris Wase, for the position of the House Speaker, we are aware, that Governors, across the party lines, have promised to support, only candidates chosen by the Party, for the position of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, a decision we applaud, and and agree with, as being in the interest of our democracy.

We strongly condemn every attempt at sponsoring social and conventional media attack on aspirants and the party leadership, by some desperate politicians, whose only approach to seeking the leadership of the House, is by brandishing false endorsements, bulldozing their way and blackmailing others.

We cannot but recall, the controversy, which charaterised the election of the leadership of the 8th National Assembly in 2015.

May we at this point, commend our governors, including Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, Nyesom Wike of Rivers among others have openly committed, to supporting whoever is chosen by the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the position of the House Speaker. The decision by the governors, is aimed at avoiding a repeat, of the 2015 scenario, witnessed during the election of the National Assembly leadership.

We are also glad, that they have restated their commitment to working together, with the President elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and the party’s leadership, in order to ensure that decisions regarding the leadership of the incoming National Assembly, are collective and also remain one, which will promote the collective aspiration of the incoming administration, towards, the progress of the country.

The time we are, is such a sensitive one, that must promote National reconciliation, deepen our unity a s progress as a nation, and most importantly, ensure equity and fair play, in the interest of our democracy.

We are once again calling Nigerians, particularly lovers of democracy, to support actions, particularly the decisions of the leadership of the governing party, so as to ensure, that the next National Assembly, is led by experienced, competent and integrity personified leadership.

Onward together.

Signed:

Hon. Suleiman Mahmoud

Politics10th NASS: Why Hon. Abbas Tajudeen Should Emerge As Next Speaker by aguele(op): 8:30am On Apr 05, 2023
Current political realities cum the true state of the nation demands that Nigeria gets it right by entrenching the right and proper leadership in its institutions.

Much of the problem we have faced as a nation is as a result of the dearth of leadership which we have been plagued with collectively. While majority of Nigerians are elated with the emergence of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the president-elect of the country, there's is still more to be done to ensure that Tinubu's presidency gives Nigerians the much expected and desired change.

And in achieving this, there's a need for the emergence of a speaker at the house of representatives who is fit and tailored enough to create a legislative backing for the Executive to dutifully deliver on its promises to thr Nigerian people.

The outgoing leadership of Hon. PoliticsTinubu's All-muslim Presidency? by aguele(op): 4:39pm On Apr 03, 2023
By Godswill Edosa

In the countdown to Tinubu's inauguration, several disturbing developments are already playing out. Whether real or fake. One such is the report that the President-elect has penciled down Femi Gbajabiamila, the current speaker of the House of Reps, for the position of Chief of Staff. Nothing can be more bewildering coming in the wake of the brouhaha generated by the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the incoming Tinubu presidency.
While Tinubu, as at the time he was handed the APC ticket, did not have control over the faith of who became his party's national chairman and while he might have little or no room to maneuver his way out of the arm twisting that led to picking a Muslim as running mate, this one about Gbajabiamila, another Muslim, on the way to Chief of Staff seat, is too debilitatingly insulting.
The picture one gets of the incoming Tinubu Presidency, if the Gbajabiamila tale is true, is that of the four topmost offices in the Presidency three had already gone to the Muslims. These four are the President, his Vice, the Secretary to the Government, and the Chief of Staff.
It is a fact that opposition to the Tinubu - Shetima ticket erupted preponderantly among Christians of the nation who justifiably are scared of a Muslim-dominated government after Buhari. A Gbajabiamila as Chief of Staff will only ratify rather than allay the apprehensions of Christians. Does it mean Tinubu does not have a worthy Christian in the entire pool of his associates? Or is it hatred for Christianity as pushed in some quarters?
Politics2023: Applauding Our Armed Forces' Apolitical Posture by aguele(op): 6:46am On Apr 03, 2023
By Kunle Ashimolowo

Despite streams of criticism, the Nigerian Armed Forces have demonstrated strength, nobility, and capacity in the preservation of Nigeria's nascent democracy. As an important stakeholder and critical institution, the Armed Forces have played a key role in the sustenance of democracy in the country.

Since its return to civil rule in May 1999, several challenges have confronted Nigeria. Some of these issues bother national unity, inspiring a sense of belonging in some parts of the country, ensuring peace, stability as well as management of the economy.

Of course, achieving peace was particularly crucial to the progress and prosperity of the nation at that crucial stage of our democratic experience, and without the active support of the troops, the desired stability would have eluded us as a people.

To date, officers and men of the Nigerian Armed Forces have continued to pay huge prices for peace in the country, supporting the sustenance of our 22-year-old democracy. Several lives were lost along the way especially in the fight to crush the Boko Haram insurgency in the North East region. Banditry, militancy, and kidnapping across the country have also come with painful consequences. These officers and men are made to stay away from their families for a long period solely in the service of defending the territorial integrity of our dear country.

The Nigerian Armed Forces have demonstrated loyalty to all democratically elected authorities at all levels of our federation. Although there were rumours of possible coups, no such thing materialised even in the wake of several national crises witnessed since the return to democratic governance. There was no such attempt because the Armed Forces knew that a new era has evolved.

In all fairness, the Armed Forces deserve all the kudos for resisting the urge to once again, get themselves enmeshed in politics which is not part of their orientation. They have placed themselves in the same realm as their counterparts in other advanced democracies across the globe. Our beloved troops have the trappings of national unity hence they remain a bastion of hope for the feasibility of a workable and united Nigeria.

In most of their recent activities, in the bid to protect the territorial integrity of our dear country, the Armed Forces have clearly shown that presently, they are the only institution with patriotic and nationalistic zeal in the discharge of their statutory responsibilities. No other known body exudes such nationalistic flavor as the armed forces.

Succinctly put, the Nigerian Armed Forces are "tireless and heroic"; therefore, the simple act of appreciating their efforts must be enacted to propel them to do more for the preservation of our national values and nationhood. The success stories recorded so far in the war against insurgency and other security threats are quite encouraging. The current efforts to take the battle to the camps of the bandits are unprecedented in the history of African warfare against insurgency.

On top of that, the Nigerian Armed Forces have been supportive of efforts to relocate internally displaced people in the North East to their ancestral homes, an action that has helped reclaim territories earlier held by insurgents in the region. So, therefore, showing gratitude to these selfless Nigerians should form an integral part of our lives as a people.

Appreciation, as they say, has a spirit of compelling the recipient to go to astonishing levels to achieve more. It is an incentive with unimaginable level of stimulation. For instance, when the Independent Electoral Commission warned that insecurity could pose a serious to the conduct of the 2023 general elections, the president was goaded to give a matching order to the Armed Forces to secure the nation by taking the fight to the enclaves of the bandits in the forest.

Consequently, the troops under the leadership of the Chief of Defense Staff, General Lucky Irabor swung into action by launching a sustained bombardment of terrorists' hideouts across the country, particularly in the red zone areas where activities of kidnappers and bandits had peaked. It is against this background of the current onslaught that vice president-elect Senator Kashim Shettima made a huge case for the Armed Forces, insisting that they are overstretched and need a lot more from the government.

For braving all odds in the fight against insecurity, Shettima commended the Chief of Defense Staff, General Lucky Irabor during the 21st century Chronicle Roundtable held in Abuja. While applauding the vision of the CDS, the VP-elect said that General Irabor's efforts in bringing the needed synergy among security services which has eradicated inter-agency rivalry, is a milestone that has significantly reduced the myriads of security challenges facing the country.

According to Senator Shettima, the newfound bond among the security services initiated by the CDS has been evident in the battle against bandits, terrorists, and other violent groups in the country which has recorded huge success.

Undoubtedly, the Nigerian Armed Forces is truly the pride of the nation. Therefore, beyond scorning them for their shortcomings, we ought to celebrate and appreciate officers and men of the Armed Forces as obtained in other advanced democracies where every troop is recognised with a medal of honor as a mark of appreciation for the protection of its territorial integrity as well as preservation and sustenance their social values. The Nigerian Armed Forces should be encouraged to do more in serving the country, performing better, protecting and sustaining our cherished democracy, and continuously defending the territorial integrity of Nigeria.

Therefore, the men and officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces in the line of battle deserve appreciation. They deserve kudos as a simple act from Nigerians who are the beneficiaries of their sacrifices to protect the nation's territorial integrity and lives. We must also appreciate and commend the invaluable contributions and sacrifices of the CDS, General Lucky Irabor who has led in the decimation and eventual defeat of the numerous terrorist groups and banditry across Nigeria.

This very significant effort has earned Nigeria international recognition as one of the few countries in the world to confront and subdue terrorism in record time. So, as the Nigerian Armed Forces make steady and consolidated progress in completely obliterating any trace of terrorism in the country, they deserve our support and appreciation. The unflinching commitment of these officers to defeat terror can only be bolstered if only we value them.

It is, therefore, safe to say that the Nigerian Armed Forces is the most engaged on the continent in the last few years because of the myriads of battles they have had to fight to protect the territory of the country. And to give credence to what the Nigerian Armed Forces are doing to bring peace and stability to Nigeria, Oyo state Governor, Seyi Makinde at the official flag-off of the construction of the 671 air force Base in Ajia area of Ibadan noted that their efforts in the fight against insurgency, banditry, and other security threats in various parts of the country are unappreciated, a situation he described as sad and unacceptable if we must embolden the spirit of our troops towards total eradication of terror in our land.

We must keep praying and appreciating the officers and men of the Armed Forces for curbing the activities of terrorists, bandits, and kidnappers as peace has evidently returned to most parts of the country. Long Live the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Politics2023 Polls: Group Berates Zamfara Governor, Matawalle Over False Accusations Aga by aguele(op): 5:03pm On Apr 02, 2023
*2023 Polls: Group berates Zamfara Governor, Matawalle over false accusations against military*

The Centre for Africa Liberation and Socio-Economic Rights (CALSER) has accused Governor Bello Matawalle of displaying undemocratic tendencies following his defeat at the last election.

The Centre, at a press conference on Sunday in Abuja, said the utterly bitter Matawaalle has blamed a myriad of factors for his loss at the polls, ranging from the naira redesign to most recently, the military.

In his address, Okwa Daniels, the Director of Communication and Strategy said the governor is now inciting the public in a manner that could enable anarchists to disrupt the peace of the land.

Daniels rubbished the claim that more soldiers were sent to the state for the elections than to combat banditry.

According to him, Matawalle may have implied that the deployment of troops frustrated his plan to deploy the bandits on his payroll for voter intimidation

"We, therefore, found it bizarre that Matawalle is now claiming that soldiers were deployed to punish him for challenging the naira redesign policy," Daniels added.

"After all, he is not the only one who challenged the policy. The governors of Kaduna, Kogi, Ondo, Ekiti, Katsina, Ogun, Cross River, Sokoto, and Lagos states are part of the suit that challenged the naira redesign policy of the Federal Government and elections held in these states, even though only for state assemblies in some these states.

"Some of the governors of these states lost in the elections or their proteges lost, while some of the governors that did not challenge the Federal Government on the policy also took beatings at the polls. Matawalle should thus ask himself why he is the only one blaming the Federal Government for his defeat by a better-articulated opponent.

"We see the Governor's outburst as a desperate move to warm himself into the heart of the president-elect, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu, which is most unfortunate, because the incoming government at the centre does not deserve to be burdened by a political plague like Matawalle. It is our fervent hope that the president-elect would see beyond the charade and treat Matawalle as a person of interest when reviewing the insecurity and banditry that has troubled the northwest.

"He should be able to clarify the extent to which he empowered the criminal and explain the roles they played in propping him up in office, what portion of the state’s security votes was passed on to the criminals, their proxies in his cabinet and other information that will help extricate Nigeria from the crisis into which his indiscretion has put Nigeria in."

The Centre for Africa Liberation and Socio-Economic Rights (CALSER), however, urged "Nigerians to note the fresh dangers constituted to the country by Matawalle and his unguarded tantrums, through which he is attempting to undermine the Nigerian military as an institution that interferes in elections when this is not true."

It added: "It is on record that the military, particularly the army, played stabilizing roles across the country during the 2023 General Elections to the extent that it was repeatedly commended by political players across party lines all over the country.

"Also, Matawelle is knowingly fueling the misplaced discontent of the children of anger who had concluded that mere rants on social media would win them elections and who are now looking for excuses and validation to ground the country with protests in their bid to frustrate the inauguration of the next government and consequently precipitate an interim government – something that will truncate democracy.

"Even though the Department of State Services (DSS) did not mention names when it confirmed that proponents of an interim government are holding meetings to intensify their efforts, Matawalle, by making these unfounded accusations to provoke protests against government institutions, has exposed himself as one of those pursuing the formation of an interim government in the event that he cannot ingratiate himself on the president-elect.

"The Zamfara State Governor has become a loose cannon that must be immediately railed in. We CALSER hereby tell Matawalle in clear terms that he must not drag the image of the Nigerian military into his poor outings in managing the security crisis in his state, which ultimately led to his defeat.

"He practically failed to provide good governance and has been consequently rejected by his people and the masses. He should live with this outcome and correct his ways instead of seeking to do more damage by exporting his toxic politics to the national level."

Politics10th Assembly: North Central Frontiers Endorse Betara For Speaker by aguele(op): 8:34pm On Apr 01, 2023
The North Central Frontiers (NCF) has backed the lawmaker representing Biu/Bayo/Shani Federal Constituency of Borno state, Hon. Muktar Aliyu Betara, for the position of Speaker in the 10th National Assembly.

The group, in a statement signed by Hon. Moses Onah and Andrew Bot, its president and secretary-general respectively said Betara is tailor-made for the job.

Describing the Borno legislator as experienced, competent and prepared, the group said its decision to support Betara despite him being from the North East was born out of his achievements and track record in his constituency and the NASS.

The North Central Frontiers said the testimonies of Betara's selflessness, kind-heartedness and love for his people have spread across the country.

"This young man has achieved more than his contemporaries. As a trained accountant, he has judiciously used limited resources at his disposal to affect lives," the statement said.

"We recall how he donated thousands of solar-powered street lights to the three local government areas. He facilitated the construction of major roads network in Biu and others linking villages within the constituency. He constructed a mini-stadium in Shani District. He upgraded Biu Emirate to a modern palace, built schools, and renovated health and other facilities.

"He has so far provided scholarships for over 5,000 students, within and outside the country. At home, he built skill acquisition centres in each of the three local government areas. The centres have since graduated thousands of apprentices who have also become employers of labour, thereby generating wealth and adding value to the society."

The group said that the experience, influence and exposure of Betara will be crucial in the 10th NASS, having been a key member since 2007.

The NCF, however, concluded that with his well-crafted agenda, Betara will address the plethora of challenges restraining the House of Representatives.

Pledging their support for the astute accountant, the group further described Betara as a friend to all who used his positions in the past to uplift every single zone of the country.

"Betara was one of the unseen hands to the ascension of Patricia Etteh, Dimeji Bankole, Aminu Tambuwal, Yakubu Dogara, and Femi Gbajabiamila as Speakers," the statement added. "His influence, popularity and acceptability are unmatched. No wonder he is called the head boy.

"Betara has overachieved in all his assignments. He was Chairman of the House Appropriation Committee, Chairman House Committee on Defence and Chairman House Committee on Army.

"This is not the time for the politics of zoning. Integrity, capacity and competence should be the consideration. Hence we are throwing our weight behind Betara".
