Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has backed Algeria for Africa Cup of Nations glory, while also hoping to see Djamel Belmadi’s squad play very well. The Desert Warriors are making their 18th appearance in the biennial championship, with their only triumph happening in 1990 when they defeated Nigeria in the final on home soil. Coach Belmadi has taken a relatively inexperienced group of players to Egypt compared to previous tournaments, with Riyad Mahrez and Islam Slimani among the team’s big names. Algeria began their Group C campaign on a flying note after seeing off Kenya 2-0 at the 30 June Stadium, Cairo. “We want to see the Algerian team playing well for the Algerian people,” Zidane, who is of Algerian Kabyle descent, said on beIN Sports TV. “I want them to win the title so as to see Algerians celebrating their victory in the streets.” Senegal are next up for the Desert Warriors on Thursday, before their date with Tanzania in their last group fixture. https://www.completesports.com/zidane-backs-algeria-to-win-afcon-2019-title/ |
The Confederation of Africa Football, CAF, says it will apply a FIFA rule that allows for two cooling / water breaks during games as a means to combat rising temperatures across host nation , Egypt. CAF said two three-minute breaks on the half-hour mark and on the 75th-minute mark will be observed during fixtures. A media advisory title “Medical Report on Temperature during AFCON” read in part: “… the average (dry) temperature in June / July is expected to be between 35°C, with the average humidity of 40% to 60%. “This will give a high WBGT (Wet Bulb Globe) temperature above 32°C. It is certain that most teams will be aware of this and train accordingly,” the advisory added. During the 2014 World Cup in France, FIFA allowed for similar breaks for some games where players and match officials get cold water supplied to them on the pitch. Fifa said in a statement at the time: “Climate conditions will be evaluated and should the temperature exceed 32 degrees, then the Fifa venue medical office will recommend cooling breaks to the Fifa general coordinator and match commissioner. “Cooling breaks last three minutes in duration are then implemented by the referee at approximately 30 minutes into the run-of-play in both halves of the match (i.e. around the 30th minute and 75th minute respectively). “Three minutes will then be added to stoppage time at the end of each half.” https://www.completesports.com/afcon-2019-teams-to-observe-cooling-breaks-due-to-soaring-heat-caf/

Ike Shorunmu, a former Nigeria goalkeeper and goalkeeper trainer has informed Completesports.com that his worries concerning the Super Eagles’ campaign at the 32nd Africa Cup of Nations billed to kick off this weekend in Egypt lie in the goalkeeping department. “It is too late a time to begin to ask for or look for alternative, so the coaches must make do with what is available,” Shorunmu, an AFCON winner in 2013 as goalkeeper coach with Super Eagles under (now late) Stephen Keshi in South Africa remarked. Nigeria coach, Gernot Rohr, listed three goalkeepers; Francis Uzoho (Anorthosis Famagusta, Cyprus), Daniel Akpeyi (Kaiser Chiefs, South Africa) and Ikechukwu Ezenwa (Katsina United, Nigeria) for the tournament. But Shorunmu, himself a former goaltender of Besiktas of Turkey, reckons it will be difficult for him to stick out his neck for a realiable number one amongst the trio. “(Francis) Uzoho has not been consistent at his club and country of late, (Ikechukwu) Ezenwa has also been off and on and (Daniel) Akpeyi, I don’t know. “But the coaches are much closer there in camp with them. They are closer to them so they know better”. A former Shooting Stars of Ibadan shot stopper, Shorunmu believes the Super Eagles have done pretty well in the buildup to the African 2019. He reasons that it is important for them to get their campaign off to a winning start. “The outcome of your first game in a major championship like the AFCON determines your journey in the championship,” the former Enyimba, FC Ifeanyi Ubah and Sunshine Stars goalkeeper coach stated. “A win boosts your confidence, brightens your chances of further progression in the championship. “Yes, Burundi are our first opponent. No team is cheap this time. They have their high points to have reached this stage. “So, it is expected Burundi won’t be a walk in the park. Who knows, it could turn out to be a fourth AFCON title win for the Super Eagles at the end of the day,” Shorunmu stressed. https://www.completesports.com/shorunmu-goalkeepers-are-my-super-eagles-afcon-2019-worries/

Following Aston Villa's return to the Premier League, John Terry has committed to the club for the next two years. Former Chelsea captain John Terry has signed an extended contract to remain as Aston Villa assistant coach until 2021. The 38-year-old spent his final season as player at Villa in 2017-18, losing in the Championship play-off final to Fulham. But Terry returned to Villa Park when Dean Smith was appointed as Steve Bruce's successor last October and this time helped the club back to the Premier League, winning at Wembley in May. And the 38-year-old has committed his future to Villa ahead of their return to top-flight action. Smith said: "I am really pleased that JT has extended his current deal as he is a pleasure to work with. "We have had a successful start to our Villa coaching careers and JT has been instrumental in joining myself, Richard O'Kelly and Neil Cutler. "He has complemented the team that we have and I have no doubts he will go on to be a top manager in the years to come. "Our focus now is on the coming season and to try to continue the progress we have had in the past eight months." Terry was linked to the Middlesbrough manager's job following Tony Pulis' departure at the end of last season but insisted he was staying patient. Jonathan Woodgate was subsequently appointed at Boro, including former Tottenham and LA Galaxy striker Robbie Keane on his staff. Terry's ex-Chelsea team-mate Frank Lampard is reportedly the front-runner for the leading role at Stamford Bridge, having impressed with Derby County, who were beaten by Villa in the play-off final last month. As well as extending Terry's deal, the West Midlands club has moved quickly in the transfer market, having already brought in a number of signings ahead of their return to the top flight. Kortney Hause and Anwar El Ghazi have been signed from Wolves and Lille respectively after spending the 2018-19 campaign on loan at Villa Park. While winger Jota, who previously worked with Smith at Brentford, was signed from rivals Birmingham this month and Brazilian striker Wesley has been brought in from Club Brugge. And Villa are linked with a number of other players, including Championship stars Neal Maupay and Jack Butland.

A man who spent six seasons with the Gunners was caught on film trolling his former employers after the Europa League final Olivier Giroud has caused some controversy in the wake of Chelsea's 4-1 Europa League final victory over Arsenal, having been filmed thanking his former club as the Blues left the Olympic Stadium in Baku. Giroud left the Gunners in January of 2018, signing an 18-month contract with Chelsea after spending six years at the Emirates, having built a cult following after taking in 180 Premier League appearances and scoring 73 goals. The Frenchman lifted the FA Cup three times with an Arsenal side that have not tasted glory in a European competition since 1994, but has since gone on to win the World Cup and the Europa League since switching London allegiances. It was Giroud himself in fact who opened the scoring in Azerbaijan, expertly nodding Emerson Palmieri's cross past a helpless Petr Cech before delivering an assist for Eden Hazard, who notched the Blues' third and fourth goals in the rout. There was no lack of celebrations from the 32-year-old, however, who might have been expected to tone down his excitement as a sign of respect for the club he represented between 2012 and 2018. Indeed, Jorginho took to Instagram as he and his team-mates made for the team hotel, streaming a live video of the players celebrating as they travelled. In it, a jubilant Giroud can be clearly seen and heard exclaiming 'Thank you, Arsenal!' as he lifted the European trophy. Olivier Giroud is a savage for this

The ex-Gunners midfielder believes a World Cup-winning playmaker needs to be surrounded by more quality and bigger personalities in order to thrive Mesut Ozil does not "have it in him to be a leader”, says Cesc Fabregas, with a former Arsenal star suggesting that one in the present team requires someone like Cristiano Ronaldo alongside him in order to thrive. The German playmaker once boasted such illustrious club colleagues. He graced the books at Real Madrid alongside Ronaldo and a number of other world-class talents and big personalities. A move to England was intended to make him a talisman in his own right, but the World Cup winner has struggled to become a go-to man for the Gunners . His inability to dictate proceedings was highlighted once again during a forgettable showing from both him and those around him in the Europa League final on Wednesday. Arsenal slumped to a 4-1 defeat at the hands of domestic rivals Chelsea in a European showpiece , with Fabregas among those to question Ozil’s input on a game which raised familiar questions. The ex-Gunners midfielder told BT Sport : “I think sometimes you just have it inside or you don’t have it. “When he was at Real Madrid he was surrounded by top, top players and one of the best players in the history of the sport in Cristiano Ronaldo. “I’m not taking anything away from Mesut, he played top football there, but once you step down a little bit, because we can all agree Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich they are top three, you have to show yourself a little bit more because you don’t have the same quality around you. “The club buys you to be the actual leader around the club. “I don’t think Mesut has that in him to carry. I don’t train with him every day, but I don’t think he has it in him to be leader.” Ozil has just completed a sixth season at Arsenal. He has taken in over 230 appearances, netted 43 goals and recorded an impressive number of assists. There have, however, been questions of his contribution throughout his time in north London. Inconsistency has plagued his performances and it has been suggested that a move elsewhere could be on the cards. The 30-year-old only committed to a lucrative new contract in 2018, and has stated a desire to remain at Emirates Stadium, but changes are expected this summer as Unai Emery seeks to make the necessary tweaks to a side that will be without Champions League football for a third successive season http://m.goal.com/e/en-ng/news/4055/mamain/2019/05/30/54125672/ozil-doesnt-have-it-in-him-to-be-a-leader-fabregas-questions

The France international had been on the road to recovery, but the latest knock means he remains a doubt for the final against the Gunners Chelsea are sweating over the fitness of N'Golo Kante ahead of the Europa League final after the midfielder suffered a knock in training on Saturday. The Blues star had almost completely recovered from the calf strain he sustained against Watford in the Premier League at the beginning of May, but he has now encountered another set-back in his road to recovery. He had been taking part in preparations ahead of the Europa League decider against Arsenal when he suffered a knock to his knee and his involvement in the game remains doubtful as a result. Maurizio Sarri had indicated last week that he was optimistic the France international could play a part in the game against the Gunners, so the injury comes as a blow and he will now have to consider alternative arrangements. Indeed, Kante is not the only concern for Sarri in the build up to the all-Premier League encounter in Baku, with Jorginho also sustaining a knock in last week's open training session. The Chelsea boss is already without both Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ruben Loftus-Cheek who both suffered ruptured Achilles tendon injuries, with the latter having suffered his set-back in a post season friendly match against New England Revolution. Antonio Rudiger, meanwhile, is out with a knee injury that needed surgery. There is some good news, however, as Ethan Ampadu has returned from a back injury and the Wales international will likely make the bench for the final. Chelsea's Europa League clash against Arsenal is set to be played at Baku's Olympic Stadium on Wednesday, May 29. Sarri has already secured Champions League football for the Blues by guiding the club to a third-place finish in the Premier League, but he will be eager to land silverware as speculation swirls around his future. "I think we had a good season, with a lot of problems of course," the former Napoli boss told reporters. "We lost two, three games very badly, but we finished third, we got to the League Cup final, a very difficult competition, and now we have the opportunity to play the Europa League final." The Italian coach added: "I'm very happy to stay in the Premier League and Chelsea is one of the most important clubs in the Premier League."

The Super Falcons attacker was introduced as an 87th-minute substitute in Saturday's final which made it her third appearance in the competition. With Lluis Cortes' side trailing 4-0, the Dalian Quanjian loanee found the back of the net in the 89th minute but it was not enough to inspire her team's fight back. The effort was Oshoala's maiden goal in the Women's Champions League this season and her eighth goal after 11 matches for Barca. US-based Indian got 9 years in jail after a US court found him guilty of sexually assaulting a 23-year-old woman on a flight when he was travelling with his wife. A n Indian man living in the US on a work visa was sentenced to nine years in prison on Thursday for sexually assaulting a sleeping woman during an overnight flight to Detroit. Prabhu Ramamoorthy was in a middle seat between the victim and his wife on a Spirit Airlines flight from Las Vegas last January. The 23-year-old victim said he unzipped her pants, unbuttoned her shirt and molested her with his hands. Prosecutors asked for a sentence of nearly 11 years, but US District Judge Terrence Berg settled on a nine-year term. He said he hoped it would be "grave enough" to deter others from committing similar crimes. A jury convicted Ramamoorthy in August . He will be deported to India after serving his sentence. The victim, a model, declined an opportunity to speak in court. She watched the hearing from the first row with her boyfriend and a support dog. At trial, she testified that she woke up during the flight and "saw his hands inside me." She said she felt "petrified, frozen." "Everyone has the right to be secure and safe when they travel on airplanes. ... We appreciate the victim in this case for her courage to speak out," US Attorney Matthew Schneider said. Ramamoorthy, 35, has lived in suburban Detroit since arriving in the US on a work visa in 2015. He and his wife were returning to Detroit on the Las Vegas flight after a trip to the Grand Canyon. Speaking through a Tamil interpreter, Ramamoorthy said he didn't want to make a statement before getting his sentence. The judge noted a lack of remorse but acknowledged that Ramamoorthy had a right to stay silent. Defense attorney James Amberg asked for a prison sentence of less than 10 years. He said the conviction will bring "severe and lifelong consequences" to Ramamoorthy and his wife when they return to southern India. https://www.indiatoday.in/world/story/indian-man-in-us-gets-9-years-jail-for-sexually-assaulting-sleeping-woman-on-flight-1409193-2018-12-14

Groblersdal - Limpopo police commissioner Lt- Gen Nneke Ledwaba on Saturday condemned the murder of a three-year-old boy at Groblersdal and warned the perpetrators that they will be "hunted down". This followed after a three-year-old boy was found murdered on Friday in the bushes next to Koting village in the Marble Hall policing area outside Groblersdal, Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said. "It is alleged that a passerby made this gruesome discovery and alerted the police who reacted swiftly to the scene of crime. Upon arrival, the deceased was found lying in a pool of blood and also stones lying next to his body, which is suspected to be the weapon used during the commission of this heinous act. The little boy was identified as Samson Sithole from this area." The motive behind this brutal incident was not clear at this stage, but police investigations were ongoing, he said. "The police in this province are determined to robustly deal with all criminalities affecting our children. Those who choose to close their ears to our continuous warning messages will be hunted down until we take them to where they belong," Ledwaba said. No arrests had yet been made, but anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect/s involved in this matter should contact Captain Richard Boshomane at 079-894-5501, or the crime stop number 08600-10111, the crime Line SMS 32211, or the nearest police station.
