Politics / Naira Marley Abuja Concert: FG Suspends Airline, Pilot by agwom(m): 8:08pm On Jun 15, 2020
The Federal Government has announced the indefinite suspension of the ExecuJet, the flight company that conveyed controversial Nigerian singer, Naira Marley, on Saturday, to perform at a concert in Abuja despite the interstate travel ban and social distancing rules aimed at curbing the spread of COVID-19.

The Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, said this on Monday in Abuja at the 43rd joint national briefing of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19. He said the government took that action as the company supply false information to get approval. According to him, the company will also be fined, the Flight Captain will also be sanctioned for providing false information.

Sirika said that the airline used approval granted for a legal flight operation to convey Naira Marley to Abuja for an illegal concert. The minister said that the flight which Naira Marley used to Abuja for his concert was approved for the use of transporting a judge.

“The flight was supposed to convey a judge, Hon. Justice Adefope Okoji, to Abuja and back to Lagos on official engagement. “Going forward we willl escalate the mechanisms we have in place, and we will be stricter in our approvals (and enforcement),” he said.

ExecuJet is an international business aviation company headquartered at Zurich Airport, Switzerland with facilities operating in Africa, Asia Pacific, Caribbean, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.

According to the Minister, the company had given false information and used approval granted for an illegal flight operation to convey the musician to Abuja. Naira Marley, had held the concert at Jabi mall on Saturday in contravention of the directive of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 as part of measures to curb the spread of the virus.

The Artist and an ex-housemate of the Big Brother Nigeria, Kim Oprah had shared videos of themselves inside a private jet en route Abuja and upon arriving in the federal capital territory.

Daily Trust had also reported how the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) sealed Jabi Lake Mall for hosting the concert in clear contravention of the law banning public gatherings.

Travel / Akwa Ibom Flood Destroys 100 Houses, Displaces 300 Persons by agwom(m): 9:41am On Jun 15, 2020
A Heavy downpour resulting in flood has destroyed 100 houses and displaced 300 persons in Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the heavy downpour which started about 3a.m in the early hours of yesterday, ended around 12p.m in the afternoon in Eket and its environs.

The resultant flood displaced some residents of Eket in Edem Udo, Grace Bill, Marina Junction, Udoh Umoh, Stadium road, Ikot Udoma, Idua road among other adjoining streets in the area. The flood resulting from the persistent rainfall and bad drainage system in the area, destroyed over 100 houses and displaced 300 persons.

Mr Ubong Mark, a resident of Edem Udom in Eket, while narrating his ordeal, said he has been suffering from effects of flooding in the area for the past eight years.

“Today’s flood is indeed a serious calamity that has befallen me. I was at home preparing for church when water began to enter into my house as a result of accumulated pressure of the downpour. “I have lost most of my belongings especially books, electronics, beddings, laptop and other personal belongings,” he said.

Mr Paul Essien, a resident at Grace Bill where most banks in Eket were located, also cried for help as the flood took over houses in the area. Essien said that some residents of the affected area had taken refuge in areas where the flood did not penetrate. He appealed to the state government to construct drainages to save residents from the perennial annual flood.

“The situation is pathetic, most people have relocated to their neighbour’s houses because the water has taken over their houses, shops and farmlands,” he said.

Another resident, Mr Nsikak Etebia, at Ikot Udoma/James town, appealed to the state government to build roads with drainage system. (NAN)

Health / COVID-19: Danger Looms As Nigerians Jettison Safety Measures by agwom(m): 6:39am On Jun 15, 2020
Medical experts have warned that Nigeria could experience dire consequences in the rate of COVID-19 cases and deaths if people continued to violate protective measures against the disease. They said it was worrisome that many people violated wearing of face masks, physical and social distancing, and hygiene measures such as hand washing and use of hand sanitisers among others across the country.

Dr. Ejike Orji, Chairman, Medical Sub-Committee, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Ministerial Expert Advisory Committee on COVID-19 said that there would be a spike in cases, and that the country would be in serious trouble if the violation continued. He said, “It is already happening. Abuja has been recording an average of 42 cases per day in the last two weeks.

“The isolation centres at the National Hospital, Abuja, University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada and Asokoro District Hospitals are filled up. “If we continue this way, we are going to be in serious trouble.” He said a lot of people in Nigeria were asymptomatic to the disease because its population was largely youthful. “70 % of our population is under the age of 30, that is also what is helping us. “The disease is serious in people who are older and have co-morbidities like diabetes and hypertension.

“So young people can have it and feel nothing is wrong with them but be endangering their parents and older people around them.” Dr. Omo Izedomwen, a public health expert said the country was already experiencing community transmission of the COVID-19 pandemic and that the only way to break it currently was to adhere to safety measures and restrictions instituted by the government .

Izedomwen, who is also the Coordinator of the Abuja Centre of the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) warned that disregarding the public safety measures comes with a cost, which people could regret later, adding “We can make choices but unfortunately cannot decide the consequences of these choices. And the consequences are very dire.”

He said the United States of America for instance had recorded over 100, 000 deaths already, saying these were people who once laughed and spent time with their loved ones.

Dr. Audu Onyemocho, an epidemiologist and an associate Professor of Community Medicine said the poor level of compliance by the public does not augur well for curbing the spread of the disease.

“The public should note that everyone is susceptible to COVID-19. “It doesn’t show on the face, so the only way is to protect yourself and people around you,” he said.

As of yesterday, Nigeria had recorded 15, 682 confirmed cases of COVID-19. Of the number, 5, 101 cases have been discharged and 407 deaths recorded.

Findings by Daily Trust revealed that doubts about the existence of COVID-19 was still widespread among Nigerians in spite of the increasing number of cases. This is happening three months after the country recorded its first case of the disease.

Our reporters gathered that some of those who initially believed in the outbreak of the disease have grown complacent and abandoned hygiene measures to protect themselves.

Health / Uvwie LGA Youths Resist Burial Of Dead COVID-19 Patient by agwom(m): 10:08pm On Jun 14, 2020
There was uproar weekend in Enerhen town in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State over plans to bury a man who allegedly died of COVID-19.

The deceased was receiving treatment at the Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH), Oghara, isolation/treatment centre. The deceased (name withheld), hailed from Ikorodu in Lagos State, reportedly died two days ago at the Oghara treatment centre where he had been receiving treatment. The deceased COVID-19 patient, a retired NNPC staff, was alleged to have instructed his family to bury him at his residence located at Ekpiwhre Drive in Enerhen community upon death.

But shortly after the news of his death went round town, angry community youths converged, insisting that the deceased must not be buried in the community. The community youths held the notion that it was against their traditions for a stranger to be buried in the community let alone a COVID-19 patient.

A community youth, who simply identified himself as Obaro, said the people of the community have vowed not to allow the burial to take place. The deceased is believed to be in his 60s and was married to an Urhobo woman and had been living in the area for years. Sources added that the family of the deceased had also reportedly secured the permission of the Catholic Church in the area for the interment.

It was, however, not clear if officials of the state government and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) have released the corpse of the deceased to the family for burial. It was gathered that the family had reportedly dug the grave where the COVID-19 patient would be buried. They also pointed out that the development was also against the NCDC guidelines for the burial of coronavirus victims. The youths are threatening to take laws into their hands if nothing is urgently done by the state government about development.

“The man died two days ago at the isolation/treatment centre in Oghara. He is a former NNPC staff that is married to an Urhobo woman. The community has been boiling since morning when we got the information that the man who died of COVID-19 is to be buried in the community,” one of the community youths said.

“In the first place, it’s against our traditions for strangers to be buried in the community. Secondly, this is a man that was reported to have died of COVID-19. We won’t allow this to happen here. He should be taken to Ikorodu in Lagos State where he hails from.

“The excuse they are going is that, the man before now told the family that when he dies, he should be buried here. We are calling on the state government not to release the corpse for them to bury here. He should be taken home or a cemetery for burial.”

Efforts to speak with the commissioner for health, Dr. Mordi Ononye proved abortive as calls and text message sent to him were not picked nor replied as of the time of filing this report. Similar efforts to speak with Uvwie Council chairman, Ramson Onoyake, were also not successful as his telephone lines were said to be switched off.

Repeated efforts to speak with the family of the deceased were also not successful at the time of filing this report.

Crime / Gunmen Kill 10 In Fresh Attack On Agatu by agwom(m): 7:25pm On Jun 14, 2020
Gunmen on Sunday killed at least 10 people in three communities of Agatu Local Government Area in Benue State. Daily Trust gathered from some villagers in the affected communities that 10 bodies have been recovered so far while many others are missing in the simultaneous attacks.

Council Chairman of Agatu, Usman Suleiman, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent by telephone, said the detail of the early morning mayhem is still sketchy.

Suleiman said information got to him around 7:00am that Adana Community was under attack by suspected gunmen and that he quickly alerted the Special Adviser on Security, the Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), Air Force, Police and other security agencies in the state to come to their aid.

He stressed that the security agencies responded swiftly, arrested some ‘boys’ and had so far retrieved nine corpses as at the time of this report. Locals said that one Ak47 rifle and 60 round of ammunition were recovered from a militia leader arrested by men of Operation Whirl Stroke.

Meanwhile, the Force Commander of OPWS, Major General Adeyemi Yekini, declined comment on the matter, urging our correspondent to contact the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) Information Department.

But, the Benue Command Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Catherine Anene, confirmed that three corpses were recovered in the fracas.

Anene said, “information was received on Sunday at about 5:30am that suspected herdsmen attacked Adama village, a riverine area in Agatu that is not motorable. A team of police officers have been deployed to the area but the level of destruction/ casualties is yet to be ascertained. Further development will be communicated to you as soon as the team on ground starts sending reports.”

Religion / Re: Who Is Afraid Of God? by agwom(m): 3:16pm On Jun 13, 2020
Sir we are talking the same thing in different ways....Don't break God laws and assuming that God is not seeing you. God is everywhere
Dtruthspeaker:

In Truth this is not what it means to be afraid of God.

Psalms and Proverbs specifically teach the True Fear of the Lord.

Proverbs 1:7= hear and take hold of the All the Instructions David gave Solomon and Understand.

1) Do not consent to do sin with others. Proverbs 1:10. The question is why?

2) verse 15- Do not walk with them. Why?

3) Proverbs 8:13-The Fear of the Lord is to flee from all evil. Again, why?

Isaiah 45:9- it is not wise to contend with thy Maker? Again, why?

I pray the the Lord give you True Understanding to Understand a Proverb or a Parable.
Religion / Who Is Afraid Of God? by agwom(m): 2:12pm On Jun 13, 2020
Most of those who call themselves believers, profess that they are afraid of God. What does this mean? Let us talk more about this. Are they really afraid of God? Are they afraid of God as much as they are afraid of their friends and others while doing something wrong? For example, a colleague of yours has to rush out and has left the mail box open. You are very curious to take a look at it. If no one is around, will you be still afraid thinking that at least God is watching? Please think about this.

The truth is that we are afraid of real people and not God. Except very few of us, most of us don’t always remember the presence of God at all the places and during all the times. Take a marriage conducted alone in a temple by a couple. Who was the witness? God. But if one of the partner denies that marriage, or decides to keep the marriage a secret, can anything be done by the other partner? Nothing. Except praying to God, who was the witness, the other partner can do nothing. Because no human being was the witness. Was the partner who denied or chose to keep total secrecy and lied about the marriage to society afraid of God? No.

This is very unfortunate, but true. Liars and those who believe in deceiving others and themselves are not afraid of God, but only of society. For them God’s powers count for nothing. May God bless such cheats, because only He can save them from their treachery. There is a small Indian story of a teacher. Once he gave all his pupils a slip of paper and asked them to return after reading it at a place where no one was present. One of the pupil did not return till late evening. The teacher went in search for the boy, and found him in a corner of the jungle. He asked him about the reason of not reading what was written on the paper, and not returning. The boy replied- Holy Sir, you instructed me to read this at a place where no one is present. But I find that God is present everywhere. So where do I read this? The teacher applauded the boy for his faith and learning the truth.

The right way of living is to remember the presence of God at all the place and during all the times. The right way to live is to be afraid of God, and no human being.
Religion / Why Does God Allow Suffering In The World? by agwom(m): 1:59pm On Jun 13, 2020
Evil, pain and suffering are never far from us. Why does God allow it? Can a loving God allow suffering? Why does God allow suffering? How do we reconcile a caring god, a god of power, with a god who allows evil to happen?

* Tragedies and suffering flood the news. Why?

* Evil and pain afflict loved ones, friends and communities. Why does God allow this?

* Suffering seems to leave no one untouched.

People ask why God allows pain in their lives – emotional pain, physical suffering, sadness and loss. They say God must not care, or perhaps he is not powerful.

God allows us to be human, to make choices. He cannot allow human freedom without allowing suffering or humans would be puppets. Much of the evil and pain in the world is human evil, humanly-caused pain, the result of human sin.

God allowed Adam and Eve to make choices. Their choice to sin brought suffering and chaos into the whole world. But it’s not over! God’s Word promises that he will create a new heaven and a new earth and there will be “no more mourning or death or pain” because man’s sin will be gone and God will dwell with mankind.

God does not want suffering. God allows mankind to make choices – but sinful choices come under his judgment. He allows evil but judges it, too.

* Free will to love others and God himself is not free if it disallows other options.

* Sinful desires bring natural consequences including pain.

* Sinful choices carry spiritual consequences – including God’s judgment.

Pain and suffering result from sin in the world – peoples’ own sin. Even though God allows suffering and pain caused by sin, he alone can judge sin justly. God’s Word warns us not to judge others.

Though God allows suffering, he overcomes it.

Religion / Why didn’t Jesus just die like everyone else and go to Heaven? by agwom(m): 1:34pm On Jun 13, 2020
Why is the death, burial, and subsequent resurrection of Jesus Christ such a big deal? Why didn’t Jesus just die like everyone else and go to Heaven and wait for us there? Why did it have to be so gruesome and public, His death, His burial, and His resurrection? Because it validates everything Jesus said while He was on earth, it validates everything he taught and shared for three years.

You see, if Jesus Christ hadn’t come back from the dead after three days, there would be no Christianity, no followers of Christ, no hope. But He has. And because Jesus Christ came to earth, we can have life and have life everlasting.

When He was on earth, He talked a lot about His Kingdom and how He was going to create a new temple in 3 days.

The people of His time did not understand, thinking that He was referring to an earthly kingdom.

If He had left earth, been buried, and didn’t resurrect, He would have been the purveyor of another false religion. Today, He would be the prophet or god of just another dead religion.

But because he came back from the dead, rose from a sealed, guarded tomb and appeared to over 500 people before He ascended to the Father to prepare a place for us in Heaven, we have proof that He was, is, and always will be, Who He said He is.

Who did He say He is? He said He is the way, the truth and the life, and no one comes to the Father but through Him.

What do we know about the details of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ? “More than we know about the death of any other man in all the ancient world.” (Wilbur Smith)

But just to focus on His burial for a moment, Matthew, one of Jesus disciples, tells us:

At the end of the day that Jesus died, a rich man of Arimathaea, Joseph, went to Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. So Pilate commanded the body to be delivered to Joseph. So Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth.

He laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulcher, and he left. The next day the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate, Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver (meaning Christ) said, while he was alive, After three days I will rise again.

Command therefore that the sepulcher be made sure until the third day, in case His disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first. So Pilate said unto them, You have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as you can. So they went, and made the sepulcher sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch. (Matt 27: 57-66)

What do you think? How sure was, ‘as sure as you can’? My guess is, not only did the chief priests and the Pharisees make sure that the stone that had been rolled over the mouth of the stone cave, where the body was buried, was extra heavy and unmovable, but they stood watch over the tomb. They had Roman soldiers guarding the tomb. Nobody was going to come take the body of Jesus! He would remain in that tomb forever!

But what do we know now that really happened?

Matthew tells us this:

At the end of the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the sepulchre. And there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: And for fear of him the keepers shook, and became as dead men. And the angel answered and said to the women, Do not fear: for I know that you seek Jesus, Who was crucified. He is not here: for he is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall you see him: lo, I have told you. And they departed quickly from the sepulcher with fear and great joy; and ran to bring his disciples word. And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him. Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me. (Matt. 28: 1-10)

After this time, Jesus Christ appeared repeatedly to the apostles and was seen by as many as 500 people at one time, during a period of 40 days after His resurrection. He repeatedly offered proofs of His resurrected life.

If Jesus the Christ had not risen from the dead, then He had done nothing any other prophet or god had ever done. He would have simply died. But He didn’t just die. He died and rose again, from the dead. Broke out of His tombclothes, escaped from a cave that was sealed with a great and heavy stone, and guarded by brutal Roman soldiers.

Why? So that we would be without excuse. So that we would have the infallible proofs, the historical evidence, 2000 years later and counting, that Jesus Christ was not just a man, not just a prophet, but God Himself in living flesh.

What does that mean to you and me? For me it means that He really is Who He says He is. He said He is the Way the Truth and the Life and that no one comes to the Father but through Him.

That is serious. That means that there is no other religion, god, or prophet who can offer genuine life, redemption from the fallen state of this earth, no matter what they claim. You see, Jesus the Christ is the only one who has died and risen again with witnesses. Mohammed is dead, Buddha sleeps, no tribal gods ever visited the earth, and no man becomes god through his own goodness as many religions claim.

Do the math, look at the evidence. For 400 years, Jesus Christ was predicted to come to earth. He came to earth as he said he would. He died and rose again from death, with proof. Either He is who He says He is or He is a fraud, and all the witnesses, on multiple occasions, over 40 days, were deceived, hallucinogenic, and willing to die horrible, bloody deaths via public stonings and hangings and beheadings over something they didn’t really see, over a person they didn’t really talk to, in whom they did not really believe.

One of the greatest incredulities of history would be that over 500 hundred people who claimed to have seen Jesus resurrected would be willing to die for the belief that He really rose again, and not one of them would have been willing to expose the lie, that Jesus wasn’t who He said He was, to escape death.

What does this mean to us, today? For those of you who have never been presented a logical proof that Jesus was Who He said He was, and have never accepted the life Jesus offers, you have no excuse. You now know the facts, what really happened and why. You have seen a logical explanation for why we can believe today what others have believed for two centuries. You see, truth never changes. The truth never lies. And you can see today that the truth is that Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth and the Life. You have but one option.

Celebrities / Majek Fashek’s Family Seeks Financial Support To Fly Reggae Star Home For Burial by agwom(m): 10:32pm On Jun 06, 2020
The family of late Majekodunmi Fasheke, famously known as Majek Fashek has made a public plea for financial assistance to fly home the reggae legend, who died on June 1, 2020 in New York City, United States of America.

Former member of the House of Representatives, representing Egor/Ikpoba Okha Federal Constituency and owner of U&I Records, Hon. E.J. Agbonayinma, made the call on behalf of the family on Friday.

Agbonayinma said Majek is a legend and Africa’s pride and thus cannot be allowed to be buried like an ordinary mortal. Agboyayinma said, “ With the support of the family, the children, we are looking at how we can bring him to Nigeria to be buried here.

“This is going to cost quite a lot of money, especially with the challenge of COVID-19. So, we are trying to raise funds.

“The only account we have right now to be donated to, is the son’s account, Randy. “Making this public is not my decision alone, some people came and said we should set this up.

“They said we should set up accounts in America and Nigeria. “We want him to be buried here in Nigeria, his fatherland and not in some foreign land like a chicken.

“In Nigeria, we are still trying to decide which account to use but the American account of the first son is ready and people are already paying into it.

“I must commend the response has been encouraging but we need more funds.”

Politics / Rape: Legalise Stun Guns, Pepper Spray For Women, Oluwo Urges Buhari by agwom(m): 10:23pm On Jun 06, 2020
The Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, has asked the Federal Government to legalise the use of stun guns and pepper spray for females as defence items against rape.

The monarch, in a statement on Saturday by his media aide, Alli Ibrahim, condemned incessant cases of rape in the society. He also urged the nation’s lawmakers to come up with stricter penalties for rapists in order to protect the pride of Nigerian females. Oluwo stated: “The reported cases of rape are alarming and call for serious concern by responsible stakeholders.

“Apart from constitutional penalty against rapists, I want to charge the government to consider legalization of the use of stun guns and pepper spray by females as protective items against unapproved sexual attempts.

“Many ladies were raped and killed. I’ve strong trust that the items, when approved for females, will protect them against such an unjust treatment and return sanctity to our society. “By that, the constitutional provision is a long term punishment; while pepper spray and stun gun are short term defence measures. “The defence instruments could form part of females’ accessories in their hand bags and purses.

“There are training sessions available overseas even in South Africa for females to learn how to use it in warding off attackers” “Rapists are coward animals and not human. The trauma of their victims is an eternal curse of no remedy. “Raped victims are no doubt mentally disturbed and emotionally imbalanced.”

Politics / FG Hands Over Covid-19 Fight To States Amidst Fears, Doubts by agwom(m): 10:21am On Jun 06, 2020
Ahead of the planned handing over of the COVID-19 fight to state governments as hinted by the federal government through the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, there are fears and doubts on the capacity of some of state governments to handle the pandemic.

Kaduna

With two active molecular diagnostic laboratories for COVID-19 testing and a recently delivered mobile testing truck to boost its testing capacity for the virus, many would say Kaduna State is capable of handling the fight against COVID-19 even as it awaits the validation of the Germfree Containerised Modular BSL-3 laboratory at the Yusuf Dantsoho Memorial Hospital by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control. Some residents of Kaduna have expressed apprehension that the state government may not be capable of fighting the virus without the assistance of the federal government.

This is in spite of a recent statement by Governor Nasir El-Rufai that the federal government had not made any financial assistance to the state in the fight against the virus. Abdullahi Ibrahim, a resident of Tudun Wada is not optimistic that the fight against Covid-19 should be left in the hands of governors. Abubakar Aliyu shares the same view, stating that if the federal government is in charge, coordinating Covid-19 response will be centralized to help in key decision making

Kebbi

In Kebbi, there is no COVID-19 testing center as the state relies on Sokoto testing center for now. During one of the press briefings at the peak of the pandemic the chairman of the State Task Force on COVID-19, Mohammed Jafar, said doctors and health workers were trained on handling the pandemic.

Jafar, who is also the state Commissioner for Health, recently announced special monetary packages for the front line health workers that included doctors, nurses, pharmacists, ambulance drivers and cleaners as part of efforts to combat the pandemic.

Health / Lagos Will Soon Run Out Of Isolation Centres – Akin Abayomi by agwom(m): 6:02am On Jun 06, 2020
The Lagos State Government has revealed that if the state continues to record over 200 to 300 positive cases on a daily basis, it will soon run out of isolation centers. It added that with the increasing number of positive COVID-19 cases in the state, only moderate to severe cases will be managed at the isolation centers while the asymptomatic and mild cases will be managed at home.

In a chat with journalists in the state on Friday, the Commissioner for health, Prof Akin Abayomi insisted the modalities for the community based/home-based care will be defined as to who qualifies to be managed at home and who will be managed at the isolation facility. He noted that if Lagos continues to record over 200 to 300 positive cases on a daily basis, the State will soon run out of isolation centers.

Hence, the need for introducing the home-based care within a week or two. He said the community/home-based management will be introduced to Lagos to reserve the isolation center for the critically ill. “We will be operating from the primary healthcare centers (PHCs) and that is where we will decide who qualifies to be managed at home or at isolation center.

“Part of the condition for being managed at home will be; is the home adequate? “Is the person feeling unwell or having pre-existing medical condition or having difficulty breathing?

“The answers to these and more will determine where the person will be treated for COVID-19”

The Commissioner stated that though there are plans to recruit more manpower, there are volunteers who are being trained at the moment and will be deployed for the home care management within a week or two.

“For the mild/asymptomatic cases who will be managed at home, we will call them, our volunteers/PHC workers deployed for that purpose will visit them, we will ensure they have regular consultation through our telemedicine online care, and we will monitor their progress too.

“At the same time, they will be given care packs and medications which includes pain killers and vitamins.

“We will also give enough information to the masses on their safety as well as that of their families and neighbors during the home management period.”

The health Commissioner further disclosed that there are plans by the state government to increase the capacity of daily test from 1,000 to 3,000 daily.

He said Lagos has so far done over 22,000 tests, adding that, the more tests are done, the more cases will be recorded, hence the need to quickly plan for more cases.

Politics / Visitors Turned Back As Buhari Observes Jum’aat Prayers In Aso Rock by agwom(m): 4:18pm On Jun 05, 2020
President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday observed the first Jum’aat prayers at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, after the release of new guidelines on religious gathering. President Buhari was joined by senior personal aides.

* COVID-19: Kogi lifts lockdown on Kabba-Bunu
* COVID-19: Kano embarks on house-to-house sample collection

While visitors wishing to join the prayers were politely excused by the security aides, all those from Grade Level 14 and above, who participated were thoroughly screened.

Social distancing was also strictly observed in line with guidelines on public gathering.

The Chief Imam of the State House Mosque, Ustadh Abdul-Wahid Suleiman, led the two rakaat (units) of prayers observed after the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 released new guidelines on religious gathering on Tuesday.

The National Coordinator of the PTF, Dr Aliyu Sani, said worship centres will only be permitted to operate for a maximum of one hour each time they meet.

Aliyu, who said churches and mosques are only allowed to operate between 5 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily, added that each service should be a maximum of an hour to allow time for disinfection. He also said Friday prayers in mosques should not exceed one hour.

“For churches, each service should be for a maximum of an hour with an interval of 30 minutes in between services to allow time for disinfection.

“Mosques may open 15 minutes before and 10 minutes after prayers. The total time for Friday prayers should not exceed an hour,” he added.

The guidelines discourage all close contact including shaking hands, hugging, kissing, handing out of materials and sharing of worship implements including prayer mats, musical organs, microphones etc.

On Thursday, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration released guidelines on reopening of places of worship.

Health / Don’t Rejects Patients Of Other Diseases, FG Begs Private Hospitals by agwom(m): 8:53am On Jun 05, 2020
The National Coordinator of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Sani Aliyu, has appealed to private hospitals in the country not to reject patients of other diseases. He said hospitals “are there to look after patients, hospitals are not there to turn patients back, people should not be allowed to suffer or die because of COVID infection.

* Lagos expands Covid-19 testing, treatment to PHCs, private hospitals

* Nigeria may record ‘unnecessary deaths’ as hospitals reject patients

“We must not allow preventable deaths to occur in our communities simply because of COVID or because we are afraid of it.

“If anything, the emergence of COVID-19 has led to the detriment in terms of care for other essential health services and this negative impact included reduction in health services that could arise from disruptions in medical supply chains or the availability of human and financial resources.

“Also there is a decline in people accessing healthcare, simply because of fear of getting affected by COVID-19. “We’ve also seen reduced access to health care for medical diagnosis of other conditions and for the most vulnerable populations, like children, the elderly and those with underlying illnesses such as diabetes.

“As I’ve said in the past, if you have fever today in Nigeria, it’s more likely going to be due to malaria than due to COVID infection and people need to be able to access care.”

He said the PTF would continue to protect the health and safety of health workers both in the public and private sectors. “We’re appealing to the private sector facilities to make sure they have adequate PPE to protect their staff.”

He said the PTF had been observing a steady rise in maternal and child mortality as a result of disrupted essential services.

“We’ve also seen life-saving, maternal, newborn and child, health services, routine vaccinations, access to care for chronic conditions such as HIV and other treatments not being delivered in our hospitals.

“We’ve also seen diversion of certain products like second-line HIV drugs for instance, antiretroviral that is being used for HIV treatment and that is currently being used for COVID infection and as mentioned by the DG NCDC.”
