Politics / Governors Violating Interstate Travel Ban by agwom(m): 8:40am On Jun 05, 2020
State governors have been embarking on interstate movement in clear violation of a ban to that effect which they agreed on as a measure to mitigate community transmission of COVID-19, Daily Trust investigation has revealed.

The governors, under the aegis of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) had on Wednesday, April 22, “unanimously” agreed to the implementation of an interstate lockdown in the country to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 from state to state, giving permission to only essential services.

* Governors defy experts’ warning, lift ban on worship centres
* Interstate movement in Nigeria may resume June 21

Daily Trust reports that the Federal Government also banned interstate movement effective Monday, May 4, as part of new measures to fight the dreaded COVID-19. Before the agreement on the interstate travel ban was reached, the 36 governors resorted to weekly COVID-19 teleconference meetings and suspended their monthly gathering at the NGF secretariat that hitherto brought them to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, on a regular basis.

The agreement was sequel to the imposition of a total lockdown in the FCT, Lagos and Ogun states by President Muhammadu Buhari to halt the spread of the virus; a measure which some of the states also took.

Checks by Daily Trust, however, showed that some of the governors have been violating the interstate travel ban with recent trips to Abuja and Lagos undertaken either by flight or road. While some of the trips by the governors could be described as security-related, others were purely political. For instance, on Monday, June 1, Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo State visited President Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, to formally inform him of his intention to seek re-election for a second term.

The same day, the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) and Governor of Kebbi State, Atiku Bagudu, led six of his colleagues to meet with the Comrade Adams Oshiomhole-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC on what was believed to be a last-minute effort to save Obaseki’s candidacy ahead of the APC primary election in Edo. Both the National Chairman of the APC, Comrade Oshiomhole, and Gov. Bagudu, however, dismissed the notion that the visit was to discuss the feud between the national chairman and his godson.

Governors sighted by our correspondents at the venue of the Monday meeting were those of Kebbi (Bagudu); Ondo (Rotimi Akeredolu); Lagos (Babajide Sanwo-Olu); Plateau (Simon Lalong); Kano (Umar Abdullahi Ganduje); Kwara (Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq) and Gombe (Muhammed Inuwa). Before the meeting with the NWC, a delegation of the governors met with the APC National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in Lagos, Gov. Bagudu confirmed while speaking with journalists on Monday.

The governors who were reported to have met Tinubu to deliberate on the internal crisis rocking Edo and Ondo chapters of the party ahead of the governorship elections were Bagudu, Akeredolu, Ganduje, Sanwo-Olu, Abubakar Badaru (Jigawa), Mai Mala Buni (Yobe), Adegboyega Oyetola (Osun), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun) and Godwin Obaseki (Edo). Also, Gov. Babagana Zulum of Borno State alongside Yahaya of Gombe had on Monday, May 18, attended the swearing-in ceremony of Waziri Bulama as the National Secretary of the APC at the party’s secretariat in Abuja.

Politics / 268 Nigerians Arrive From China by agwom(m): 7:48pm On May 30, 2020
More Nigerians stranded abroad arrived Saturday as evacuation of nationals continues in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

The latest are 268 returnees are from China and they arrived the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja Saturday at about 2:31pm. They and 24 crew arrived via Air Peace’s B777. All the 268 passengers disembarked at the Abuja airport and the Air Peace flight departed for Lagos thereafter.

The passengers were moved via seven Chisco buses to their isolation centres in the city centre, our correspondent learnt. Foreign affairs minister Geoffrey Onyeama had said in a tweet the returnees would go on 14-day isolation.

Some 700 Nigerians have previously been evacuated from the United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States of America and Lebanon. More are expected from India during the week. In another development, Daily Trust learnt that Air Peace operated another flight from Owerri via Abuja and to Lagos.

It is not immediately clear if the passengers were essential workers. A source who pleaded anonymity said the Air Peace flight that came from Owerri to Abuja had 56 passengers and seven crew members. The flight however picked additional 27 passengers at Abuja airport totalling 90 and departed to Lagos.

Sources say there’s been increased military aircraft movements in recent times.

It is not immediately clear the reason for the increased military aircraft movements but our sources suspected it may not be all connected with military operations as a lot of the passengers were plain clothes passengers.

Religion / 8 Steps To Effective Christian Leadership by agwom(m): 5:10pm On May 30, 2020
As a Christian leader, you are held to high moral, ethical, and social standards. As a leader, you are held to high standards, but as a Christian leader, that bar is raised even higher. Why? Because both the Christian and non-Christian social environment has tended to expect that Christians measure up to their self-proclaimed moral and ethical standards, as they rightly should. What can you do to be sure you 'stand up to the test' in the area of Christian leadership?

1) Probably the most important thing you can do as a Christian leader is to clean up your act---if there is anything in your life, moral or ethical, which would not stand up to scrutiny if the entire world found out---you must eliminate it immediately. Do not give anyone an occasion to think that you are a hypocrite.

2) Be sure that every decision you make is honest and ethical. You cannot effectively lead, as a Christian or not, when your decisions and actions are not above-board, fair, and honest.

3) As a Christian leader, commit to telling the truth no matter what. As a Christian leader, when you lie or tell half-truths, people tend to feel that your entire faith is a sham. In fact, if you are habitually lying and telling half-truths, your faith may indeed be a sham.

4) Learn everything you can about the tasks at hand, even if it means working in the trenches for awhile. No one likes to be led by someone who has never done what they are doing. This doesn't mean you have to become an expert, just participate in the menial work long enough to understand the frustrating aspects of the work. Another benefit to this is, when you have actually done the work, you can more effectively brainstorm solutions to challenges when they arise.

5) Lead by example. Do you expect your employees or secretaries to arrive on time for work, and dressed well? Then you must do the same. Sometimes it is so easy to think that you have earned the right to come in whenever you feel like it, or to return from lunch whenever you wish. Sure, you may have earned the right, but you gain far more by setting the example for performance. Do you expect others to work overtime when a project is behind projections? Then you must be willing to do the same.

6) Although you may feel you have earned the right to delegate away all the work, continue to be involved in productive tasks. By doing some of the work, not only do you gain the respect of your employees, but also you keep in touch with the flow of things. As a leader, it is easy to become disengaged from the actual productive segment of your business, and resultantly make decisions that look good on paper and sound good around the boardroom table, but are actually worthless when the rubber hits the road.

7) Constantly reevaluate your own performance. Often, you may spend so much time correcting the actions of others and solving crises you didn't create, that you develop a sense that others aren't as capable as you. Consequently, you may not recognize when you are falling into bad habits that also need to be corrected. Be the first to recognize and correct your own short-fallings.

cool Avoid pride. Once in a position of leadership, especially if you are good at what you do, it is easy to begin to feel that you are invincible. Once that occurs, you become vulnerable to pride, and may make decisions you would frown on if your subordinates made the same decisions. Maintain full responsibility for your actions, and keep them above-board at all times.
Bonus Step:

9) Learn to manage your time. When you are in a position of leadership and find yourself delegating away most of the time-consuming tasks, it is easy to lose control of your time. Again, when your employees see you wasting your time, they will tend to do the same.

Politics / COVID:19 TY Danjuma Donates Relief Materials To Ebonyi State by agwom(m): 8:28am On May 30, 2020
The Ebonyi state government has received supports worth 120 million naira to cushion the effects of coronavirus lockdown in the state.

The items came from “Victim Support Fund (VSF) Task Force on Covid:19” under the umbrella of TY. Danjuma foundation. 2,060 households are expected to benefit from the donated items. The group Chairperson in charge of the Task Force on COVID:19, Mrs Toyosi Akerele Ogunsiji presented the items to the state government in Abakiliki on Friday.

Mrs Ogunsiji added that the foundation was touched to support the state owing to reason that it has the highest cases in the entire South East region. Her words: In the Southeast, Ebonyi state has the highest number of Coronavirus cases at the moment and even though that the state government has been making concerted effort to combat the scourge, we think it important to ensure that our work on the impact of this emergency intervention of the COVID:19 global pandemic touches the length and breadth of Nigeria.

“We were made to understand that the livelihood of the citizens is tampered at this moment of the pandemic, companies are unable to function in full capacity, even though government is operating off and on, people have lost their jobs. “And so, food is the major component, it’s a major necessity for human survival which is what we have for you today.

“We have Rice, Beans, Garri all in 10kg each, groundnut oil and salt. In addition to that, we are donating, 30 bags of hand sanitizers, 50,000 face masks, 50 safety materials for your healthcare workers owing to the fact that healthcare workers are always on the frontline at this moment and we already know the challenges that Nigerians suffer in terms of healthcare infrastructural management and the shortage of Doctors.” Receiving the items on behalf of the state government for onwards distribution, the Deputy Governor, Barr. Eric Kelechi Igwe thanked the foundation. He described such as an act of passion and love and as well assured the foundation of judicious distribution of the items to the households in the state.

Politics / Ango Abdullahi: Buhari’s Major Problem Is Incompetent And Selfish Lieutenants by agwom(m): 6:33am On May 30, 2020
Professor Ango Abdullahi is a former minister and former Vice Chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria. He is now the chairman of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF).

In this interview with Daily Trust Saturday, he has, among others, blamed what he called incompetent and selfish appointees/associates for the “failure” of Buhari’s administration.

Excerpt: Nigeria is celebrating 21 years since the return of democracy, what is your take on that?

I did not believe 29th of May is the Democracy Day for Nigeria. Democracy Day is 1st of October, because that is the day that Nigeria became politically independent from colonial masters. If the interpretation of Democracy Day means Nigeria has moved from military to another form of administration, I wouldn’t say that we have moved from military administration to democracy. What we have done was to move from military administration to civilian administration.

There is difference between civilian administration and democratic administration. As far as I am concerned we have not enjoyed democratic administration in the last 21 years, including the current period that we are in now. In fact, we have suffered more in terms of less democracy in the last four to five years than any other time in the last 21 years.

How then do you view the leadership style of the incumbent President, Muhammadu Buhari?

Well, it is difficult to give straight answer to this question. From a distance, I would say that he delegates power to other people who probably have no qualification and competence to execute the duties of their offices. They may also have no mandate to execute those powers delegated to them.

The presidential powers that are enshrined in the constitution are entailing the responsibilities of a person who offered himself for election, as Buhari did. Eventually, he emerged as the president and therefore those powers are exclusively his own powers. All he needs to do is to ensure that those powers are executed in the expectation of the people of the country. Yes, he can’t do everything all alone; we concede. He has to find people or assistants, associates and colleagues who would be assigned various roles and responsibilities to carry out those functions that are his own.

I once postulated few months after he emerged as president for second term that we trust his honesty, but unfortunately he has failed to gather the necessary materials with which to execute the duties and functions of the office of the president by the poor quality of people that he gathered around either as ministers or any other role they play.

As a teacher, if you asked to grade the performance of Buhari in comparison to the previous presidents since the return of democracy, what would be your score for him?

I have worked with only one of the presidents. I worked with Obasanjo for three years. Of course, Obasanjo was a better president. I ranked Obasanjo far better president than Buhari. This is because of his ability to take on the duties of president whether sometimes right or wrong. The critical job of the president is to take decision. Some of the decisions may be right, while others may be wrong. The most important thing is that there must be somebody who takes decisions and take responsibility. This is where Obasanjo excelled. He took decision and took responsibility. This is the major difference between Obasanjo’s presidency and that of Buhari.

Aside selection of competent lieutenants, which other area do you think that the Buhari presidency is lagging behind?

I have never personally been close to him, but from afar I would say lack of firmness. Firmness means that he should come out as president to ensure that his decisions are executed to the latter. However, we notice that he did not exhibit that firmness.

For example, when somebody is alleged to have done something wrong and you requested for evidence and ample of them were provided; the president should take decisive action to serve as deterrent. The reverse is however the case. We have instances of people close to him that engaged in one wrong doing or the other, but went scot free after a lot of evidences have been adduced directly and indirectly. These were in terms of both moral and material corruption.

Politics / Bandit Attacks May Affect Farming, Says El-rufai by agwom(m): 8:15pm On May 29, 2020
Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State has expressed his plan to meet with service chiefs in order to seek more military operations that will protect his area of control from the bandits who will leave Zamfara and Sokoto States because of the ongoing onslaught against them. El-Rufai, who fielded questions from State House reporters on Friday, said banditry would affect this year’s farming if not dealt with at this point in time.

The governor, however, expressed optimism that the challenge would be frontally tackled by the military with the assurance he got from the air Force chief. He said: “The Sokoto story only hit the headlines just a few days ago, but in Zamfara, in Kaduna, in Niger, in Katsina, this banditry has become a northwestern scourge and we have been battling it with the support of the military; we are very grateful to the Nigerian Air Force, the Nigerian Army and in our own particular case, even the Navy has been holding fort in Southern Kaduna.

“We’ve been dealing with this issue and our concern now is with the operations in Sokoto and Zamfara. “Many of the bandits will move to Kaduna, this is part of the reasons I’m here, I’ll let be meeting with the Minister of Defence and the Service Chiefs to try to get more military activities, some operations to be strengthened. “I must say that they’ve been doing very well, they’ve supported us, but this banditry is a big problem.

“It’s going to affect agriculture unless it is dealt with and I believe that it will be dealt with. “The Chief of Air Staff has assured me that whatever it will need to be done to wipe out the bandits, to enable our farmers to go to farm as the rains advance, will be done.

We are confident that things will get better. “It’s most unfortunate that we’ve had to deal with it in the northwest in the same way that Boko Haram ravaged the northeast, these bandits are also becoming a serious problem in the northwest, but the problem is being addressed.”

El-Rufai, while speaking on Democracy Day, said the COVID-19 pandemic had made many people to have a low key celebration. The governor, who said the country was going through a difficult period as the economy would go into recession, stated that the nation would overcome the current situation.

Politics / Katsina Relaxes Lockdown For Friday Prayers, Church Services by agwom(m): 10:04am On May 29, 2020
Governor Aminu Masari of Katsina State has approved the relaxing of the COVID-19 lockdown to allow Muslim faithful observe Friday congregational prayers in the state.

Alhaji Mustapha Inuwa the Secretary to the State Government, said this in a statement in Katsina. Inuwa said that the governor also lifted the ban on Church services every Sunday as well as travel from one local government to the other in the state.

He, however, advised the people to adhere strictly to health and security advises like wearing of facemasks, physical distancing, washing of hands with soap and running water and use of sanitisers. Inuwa said that the decision was to enable Muslim and Christian faithful to observe their religious activities.

Earlier in the week, Governor Masari said the government, after reviewing the relaxed lockdown across the state, has decided to return the full lockdown in three councils of Katsina, Daura and Batagarawa.

These three councils have accounted for over 80 percent of the patients in the state, he added.

The lockdown was initially suspended for a few days before the celebration of the Eid-el-Fitr. (NAN)

Politics / APC Manifesto: Questions Over Buhari’s Key Campaign Promises by agwom(m): 5:40am On May 29, 2020
Five years into the eight-year tenure of President Muhammadu Buhari, his administration is yet to deliver on key promises upon which Nigerians overwhelmingly voted him, an analysis by Daily Trust has revealed.

Buhari first defeated a sitting President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, at the March, 2015, presidential poll, after securing 15,424,921 votes against Jonathan’s 12, 853, 62, as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In the build-up to the poll, Buhari and his All Progressives Congress (APC), riding on the crest of “change” mantra, unveiled their plans for the country and Nigerians as encapsulated in the party’s manifesto. It was upon these pledges that Nigerian voters threw their weight behind his candidature and that of his running mate, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, and ushered them into office.

Then in February, 2019, President Buhari was re-elected after defeating a former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the presidential poll. He garnered 15,191,847 votes against Atiku’s 11,262,978.

However, an analysis of the implementation of the pledges contained in the APC manifesto has revealed that the administration’s key promises have remained largely unfulfilled even with five out of the eight-year tenure of the administration now gone. Tagged: “Our Vision for a New Nigeria”, the manifesto makes critical promises cutting across many spheres of national life. Our reporters reviewed 16 of the promises and the findings indicate that, although some progress has been recorded, no significant change has been achieved.

In the manifesto, the party attributes the abysmal performance of the previous administration to lack of a manifesto to guide and give direction to the government. It said: “When this democratic dispensation commenced in 1999, the Federal Government that emerged did not tell Nigerians what its vision was for the country; because the party that formed the government had none.

“And without a vision, that party at the centre has led Nigeria from one crisis to another, lurching deeper into political anarchy, economic decline and social disillusionment, a decade and a half later, nothing has changed. “That ruling party has neither concrete plans for the security and advancement of Nigerians, nor the wherewithal to do so even if it had one.

Suffice to say that it had thrived on the maxim: ‘promise nothing, do nothing’.” In trying to convince Nigerians of its resolve to make a difference, the party said: “In the past, political manifestos in Nigeria were hardly different from mere platitudes and general statements to which parties could not be held accountable.

The APC manifesto is different. “We have clearly stated what we will deliver to Nigerians when elected into office. Our focus is on six priority areas: national security, good governance, human capital development, economic development, land and natural resources and foreign policy.”

While the opposition politicians, especially in the PDP, believe Buhari has not lived up to expectations in the last five years considering the lofty promises made by the APC-led administration, those in support of the ruling party say they have achieved a lot considering the rot they found on ground when they took over.

Politics / How Buhari Scores 55% In Fight Against Graft by agwom(m): 6:05am On May 28, 2020
Five years after, stakeholders and experts have rated the performance of President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption agenda at an average of 55 per cent. The poll is based on interviews with people who are professional anti-corruption practitioners in government, civil society and research institutions.

The president was first elected in 2015 largely on the promise to fight corruption and he has made it a signature policy of his administration. On a scale of one to 100, the practitioners in the anti-corruption sector scored the president 35 per cent; being the lowest assessment, and 70 per cent as the highest.

Most of the people interviewed agreed that the present administration had taken the fight against corruption with more seriousness and that it had demonstrated the political will to combat it.

Those who spoke include the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye; a former Director General of the Bureau of Public Service Reforms (BPSR), Dr. Joe Abah; the Executive Secretary of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), Prof. Sadiq Radah; and a political scientist and Director, Centre for Democracy and Development, Prof. Jibrin Ibrahim. Others were Mathew Page, Associate Fellow, Chatham House; Debo Adeniran, Chairman, Centre for Anti-corruption and Open Leadership (CACOL); Prof. Etannibi Alemika, a member of PACAC and Professor of Criminology and Sociology at the University of Jos; Auwal Rafsanjani, Executive Director, Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC); and Remi Aiyede, a Professor of Governance and Public Policy at the University of Ibadan. While they acknowledged that Nigeria still has a long way to go in stamping out corruption, they pointed out that the Buhari administration in the last five years had made progress. Auwal Rafsanjani, who is also the representative of Transparency International (TI) in Nigeria, scored Buhari 35 per cent, the lowest score among the speakers.

Rafsanjani commended the administration for adopting and implementing policies like the Treasury Single Account (TSA), the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), the Bank Verification Number (BVN) and other sector-specific ones like Know-Your-Customer policy and the Beneficial Ownership Database in the financial and oil and gas sectors respectively.

Phones / Telcos To Lose Non-Utilized Licences As FG Suspends Spectrum Trading by agwom(m): 8:57pm On May 27, 2020
All assigned spectrum found to be non-utilized or underutilized will be taken over and sold to operators who are willing to deploy it for the benefit of Nigerians, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) said Wednesday. It also suspended the Spectrum Trading Guidelines 2018 for the Nigerian telecommunications industry. This was the decision of the Board of Commissioners of the Commission from its meeting recently, a statement from NCC said on Wednesday.

Daily Trust reports that the board had earlier taken the decision for Spectrum Trading in response to telecommunications global dynamics as well as the efforts to optimally utilize and maximize the benefits of the spectrum scarce resource.

The NCC, in the statement signed by its Director of Public Affairs, Henry Nkemadu, said the current Spectrum Trading Guidelines were developed in 2018 after industry-wide consultations and this instrument allows that the spectrum resource be traded on the Secondary Market through Transfer, Sharing or Leasing upon satisfying stipulated regulatory conditions. He said: “The Nigerian National Broadband Plan (NNBP) 2020 – 2025 launched by His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, in Abuja in March 2020 requires that these guidelines be reviewed to ensure that unutilized spectrum is fairly traded and to facilitate rollout by other operators amongst others. “This is to address the need for ubiquitous broadband deployment to accelerate penetration and access in line with the economic agenda of the Federal Government.

“In accordance with the NNBP 2020 – 2025, for optimal use of spectrum, licensees have the obligation of the Use it or Lose It policy because idle high demand spectrum does a disservice to poorly served populations and should be released for effective use as may be required to promote efficient use of assigned spectrum. “The ‘Use it or Lose it’ rule should therefore apply in all instances where assigned spectrum is found to be non-utilized or underutilized and ensures unutilised spectrum is fairly traded to facilitate rollout by other operators.

“In response to the need for the review of these guidelines as highlighted above, and also following paragraph 12 of the Spectrum Trading Guidelines, 2018 which vests the Commission with the right to review/vary and modify these guidelines from time to time as it may deem fit, the Spectrum Trading Guidelines 2018 application in Nigeria is hereby suspended until further notice, as declared by the board.”

Health / COVID-19: FG Sends 3 Local Cure Claims For Validation by agwom(m): 7:31pm On May 27, 2020
The Federal Government has said that three out of the numerous claims of COVID-19 local herbal cure have been found worthy of further investigation and they have been forwarded to relevant authorities for validation.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and Chairman, Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha, said this on Wednesday in Abuja at the 36th joint national briefing of the task force. According to him, the validation was made by the Federal Ministry of Health after holding a virtual meeting with Nigerian researchers and scientists.

“The decision to meet with the researchers was also prompted by the incidents of mysterious deaths in Kano and some other cities. “The occurrences in Kano and some other cities have given cause to launch our research initiatives using existing structures and systems in a manner that will build a legacy and prepare Nigeria for any future pandemic.

“As a measure of the importance attached to research and development of local capacity for finding a cure for COVID-19, the Federal Ministry of health held a virtual meeting with a number of researchers and scientists with claims to cure COVID-19. “Out of the numerous claims, three were found to deserve further investigation and we have forwarded them to the relevant authorities for appropriate review,” Mustapha said.

He said that efforts are also being made to meet inventors of locally fabricated COVID-19 equipment. Mustapha said that the subject of research is central to the PTF and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is willing to support research efforts. He, therefore, urged researchers to take up the challenge and come forward with their innovations.

He said: “Similarly, efforts are being made by the Ministry of Science and Technology to subject a good number of locally fabricated COVID-19 equipment for verification and subsequent certification.”

Politics / 5 Years Of Buhari Administration: Economic Performance Ratings by agwom(m): 5:13pm On May 27, 2020
Doubtlessly, the past five years of President Muhammadu Buhari in office have been characterised by sundry micro and macroeconomic policies and funding initiatives aimed at strengthening all the institutional and legislative mechanisms for the purpose of reversing the economy’s recessionary trend and positioning it on the part of sustainable growth.

Apart from the yearly budgets that spell out in clear terms the economic projections of the administration for the economy, including the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF), as well as other policy frameworks, others like the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP), debt management plans, the Treasury Single Account (TSA), have been churned out by the government as templates for various policies and programmes’ implementation to alleviate poverty, address unemployment, insecurity and other socio-economic problems.

Today, a cursory appraisal of the impact of the various initiatives from the context of micro and macroeconomic perspectives appear to signify that there are more hurdles to cross given the current state of the economy, particularly the inclement state of the environment to businesses, rising poverty and unemployment rates and its unpromising future prospects.

Despite all these worrisome socio-economic indices accentuated by the fiscal challenges associated with the country’s dwindling crude oil export earnings over the past few months, the President Buhari-led administration has not relented in its effort through sustained policy measures geared towards re-positioning the economy on the path of sustainable growth.

Foreign Affairs / Trump Threatens To Regulate Or Close Down Social Media Platforms by agwom(m): 4:27pm On May 27, 2020
U.S. President Donald Trump, on Wednesday threatened to “strongly regulate or close down” social media platforms. The threat came a day after microblogging service provider, Twitter, labelled his tweet on voting by mail as misleading. “Republicans feel that Social Media Platforms totally silence conservatives voices. “We will strongly regulate, or close them down, before we can ever allow this to happen.

“We saw what they attempted to do, and failed, in 2016. We can’t let a more sophisticated version of that happen again. “Just like we can’t let large-scale Mail-In Ballots take root in our Country. It would be a free for all on cheating, forgery, and the theft of Ballots. “Whoever cheated the most would win. Likewise, Social Media. Clean up your act, NOW!!!!” Trump said in a tweet on Wednesday.

On Tuesday evening, Twitter placed a warning tag on a post by Trump, and directed the president’s followers to a fact-check page on his claim in the message. In the tweet, Trump had claimed that voting by mail or mail-in ballots would lead to “substantial fraud”

. It read in part: “There is NO WAY (ZERO!) that Mail-In Ballots will be anything less than substantially fraudulent. “Mail boxes will be robbed, ballots will be forged & even illegally printed out and fraudulently signed.” Under the tweet came a circled exclamation mark followed by the message: “Get the facts about mail-in ballots” in a hyperlink. The link takes readers to a Twitter’s fact-check page that debunks the claim.

“Trump falsely claims that mail-in ballots would lead to a Rigged Election. “However, fact-checkers say there is no evidence that mail-in ballots are linked to voter fraud,” the company said on the page.

The president later accused the company of interfering in the 2020 U.S. election slated for Nov. 3. He also attacked Twitter for “completely stifling free speech”, saying he would never let that happen as president. Twitter is Trump’s favorite social media platform, with over 80 million followers. Politics / Reps Want Fumigation Of Schools Before Re-opening by agwom(m): 5:47pm On May 24, 2020
House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Services has advised the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, to direct the management of all public and private schools across the country to fumigate schools before re-opening.

It made the call in a letter addressed to the Minister signed by Chairman of the Committee, Professor Julius Ihonvbere, dated May 20, 2020 with reference number NASS/9HR/CT.015/90. The committee called for the incorporation of the resolutions reached into re-opening plans of the Minister to prevent pupils/students from being infected with the COVID-19 virus.

It also advised that all public and private schools should sensitize their pupils/students adequately on the dangers of COVID-19 and its attendant consequences and possible ways of protecting themselves from being infected.

“Disinfection of shoes and feet should be strongly encouraged for each classroom as done in poultry pens with appropriate non- corrosive solution. “Emphasis should be placed on the minimum number of pupils/students in a class in strict adherence to social distancing procedure/ prescriptions.

“Procurement of infrared thermometers, face masks and hand sanitizers for pupils and teachers use before entering school. “Special efforts should be made through existing structures to monitor full compliance with school reopening protocols and produce bi – weekly report on those in charge should be required…,” the committee added.

It commended the Minister for introducing online teaching which, it said, has impacted positively on learning during the lockdown. It, however, stated that students in the rural areas were left out due to lack of electricity and internet facilities.
