Four Chibok school girls were among newly matriculated students in the American University Nigeria (AUN), Yola. The girls were among the 24 Chibok school girls that escaped from Boko Haram in 2014 that were offered scholarship under a special preparatory program by the university management. The matriculation ceremony for new students in the school was held recently in Adamawa. According to the statement from the management, 18 winners of the 67 competitive AUN scholarships for postgraduate programs were also among those who took part in the ceremony and other several intakes who were transferring from other universities in Ghana, Lebanon, Egypt, the United States and some European countries. The matriculation, which witnessed the novelty of admitting first set of law students, also has the largest number of undergraduates in a semester in the past three years. The President of AUN, Margee Ensign, said the students should be rest assured that will receive the kind of education that will make them become leaders in their chosen fields. “This kind of education will train you to look at problems from varying perspectives.” President Ensign reminded them that they are being trained to be the leaders of the continent who, upon graduation, will be ready to solve the challenges that confront them, their community, their country, and their continent. She said: “All universities identify new problems, come up with new ideas. They discover new truths and some change society. At AUN, Africa’s first Development University, this is what we are trying to accomplish.” The president noted that by engaging students to deal with problems such as poverty, literacy, inequality, injustice, or violence, while in school will help in finding solutions that will improve the lives of their fellow human beings. “We not only provide you with a different sort of education, we provide you with the intellectual tools to become the future leaders of Africa,” she said. Olaleye Aluko The police in Lagos State have arrested a 22-year-old housekeeper, Tanko Abdulateef, who allegedly stabbed his employer, Mrs. Mabel Okafor, to death in the Ajah area of the state. PUNCH Metro learnt that Okafor was stabbed in the stomach in her apartment on Close 9, Victoria Garden City, Ajah, on August 17, while her valuables, including three mobile phones, a trinket and some clothes, were stolen. Our correspondent learnt that Abdulateef had fled the apartment on the day of the incident, which aroused the police’s suspicion that he was behind the murder. A police source told PUNCH Metro that the housekeeper was arrested from a hideout in the Bali area of Taraba State, on August 27. He said, “The suspect allegedly ripped the victim’s stomach open. He also took away valuable items from the house, including three mobile phones, a trinket and a lot of clothes. All the items were recovered from him after his arrest. “On the day of the incident, policemen went to the house and discovered that the place had been ransacked and a lot of property had disappeared. The housekeeper was also nowhere to be found. “The deceased was moved to the mortuary and the policemen from the Ajah division investigated the matter. It was later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba. “The suspect was arrested in Taraba State two weeks after he fled.” Our correspondent learnt that the state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, had detailed a decoy team of the Rapid Response Squad in charge of tracking to get on the case. The operatives thereafter tracked the suspect to the Bali area in Taraba State. The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, who confirmed the arrest, said the suspect would be charged to court after the conclusion of investigation. She said, “After about three days in Bali, operatives were able to recover some of the phones stolen from the victim before eventually arresting the suspect where he was hiding. There is no escape route for criminals in Lagos State. Any crime committed in Lagos will be unravelled.” http://punchng.com/housekeeper-killed-employer-lagos-arrested-taraba/

John Alechenu and Tony Okafor The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, on Monday said the All Progressives Congress government of President Muhammadu Buhari was not against restructuring. Ngige, who spoke with newsmen in Awka, the Anambra State capital, said the Buhari administration had already begun the restructuring process with the nation’s economy. He said the impact might not be felt immediately but with time, Nigerians would all smile because of the ongoing restructuring by the APC administration. He said, “Nigerians have positively changed their way of doing things for the better and have become more prudent and judicious in their spending pattern.” The minister assured Nigerians that Buhari would look into the political restructuring of the country at the appropriate time. “It’s one after the other. After economic restructuring to reposition the economy of this country, the Buhari administration will embark on the political restructuring and will set the modalities for the exercise,” he said. Asked whether the restructuring would revisit the 2014 National Conference report, Ngige said, “When we get there, we shall address the issues.” The minister called on various agitation groups in the country to sheathe their swords, noting that violence would not do anybody any good. “Militancy and agitations are not the answer to resolving Nigeria’s myriads of problems, which the Buhari administration didn’t create in the first place. “What is required is for all to support this administration to meet its set goals for the development and transformation of all sections of the country,” Ngige said. Meanwhile, amidst growing criticisms of President Buhari’s economic policies, the APC has urged the President to remain focused. The governing party gave this advice in Abuja, on Monday. The APC said the advice was in response to what it described as the “orchestrated and insensitive” comments by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party on the economy. The PDP had in a statement chided the Buhari-led APC administration for dissipating energy on blaming the immediate past administration instead of concentrating on solving Nigeria’s economic problems. The National Secretary of the APC, Mai Mala Buni, who conveyed the party’s position in a statement, said, President Buhari should remain focused in his bid to restore Nigeria’s economic growth.” Buni said, “In spite of the PDP’s orchestrated and feeble attempts to blackmail the current administration and twist facts, the reality remains that the prevailing socio-economic hardship being faced by Nigerians is a direct consequence of the mismanagement of the economy and unprecedented looting of the country’s commonwealth perpetrated under its watch. “The PDP’s attempt to turn truth on its head is fraudulent, insensitive and an insult to Nigerians. For the umpteenth time, the PDP must own up to its transgressions and apologise to Nigerians. “Going forward, the urgent task before the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC administration is to restore the country’s battered economy and health. Innovative means are being employed to achieve this in the quickest possible time.” The APC said Nigerians should rest assured that the Buhari administration had the strong political will and commitment to revive the economy and tackle the nation’s current challenges. This, it said, would be achieved through suitable and well thought-out economic policies, fiscal discipline and socio-political reforms. According to the party, the administration also remains committed to the diversification of the country’s economy which has been placed as top on the priority list. “To this end, President Buhari is aggressively formulating and implementing policies aimed at diversifying Nigeria’s economy from oil to other sectors, such as agriculture, mining and manufacturing.” Buni said. The APC equally assured Nigerians that the administration would pull the country out of the present hardship. It, however, appealed for the support, cooperation, patience and prayers of Nigerians, to enable the administration ensure that it takes the country to its deserved destination. http://punchng.com/buhari-not-restructuring-says-ngige/

After a closed door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum, Ibe Kachikwu, said the government has no plans to increase the price of petrol. Mr. Kachikwu’s statement comes a day after former Group Managing Directors, GMDs, of the state oil firm, NNPC, advised the government to increase the price. The former state oil chiefs argued that the current price cap of N145 per litre of petrol was “not congruent with the liberalization policy.” The removal of the cap under a liberalised market environment would allow marketers of petroleum products to sell at a comfortable price based on factors such as the exchange rate and international crude price. With the Naira exchange rate going down by over 50 per cent to about N412 since the current petrol price was fixed, approving the recommendation would have meant Nigerians pay more for petrol. While addressing journalists at the State House after meeting the President, Mr. Kachikwu indicated the government would not heed his predecessor’s advice. The minister, who handed over as GMD of the NNPC to the current incumbent, Maikanti Baru, said the government had no plans to increase the price. “Have you seen any memo to that effect?’’ he responded when pressed on the matter by journalists. The minister was accompanied to the meeting with the president by Mr. Baru who also said the government has no plan to increase the price of petrol. “There is nothing like that,” he said. Both men referred journalists to the Petroleum Product Pricing and Regulatory Agency, PPPRA. PREMIUM TIMES had reported how the PPPRA also rejected the advice to increase fuel price. While stating the government’s response, the acting Executive Secretary of PPPRA, Sotonye Iyoyo, said the proposal was the personal opinion of the former state oil chiefs. “If it was a recommendation, that is what it is – a personal opinion. I’m not aware government is planning any fuel price increase. We are in a liberalised market already,” the acting Executive Secretary of PPPRA, Sotonye Iyoyo, said. Buhari’s objection Although the two oil chiefs did not provide details of their discussion with the president, the issue of petrol price is believed to be the main topic of discussion. Mr. Buhari had been reluctant to increase the petrol price from N86 to N145 cap in May despite the hard biting scarcity of the product that left Nigerians queuing for days to get it. The scarcity persisted mainly because marketers refused to import the product saying it was not profitable to import and sell at N86. The marketers have again called for an upward review of prices. A senior official of the retail arm of the NNPC, who sought anonymity as he was not authorised to speak to journalists, narrated how the president conceded to the price increase only after so much pressure. “Kachikwu threatened to resign if the president did not agree to the increase then” he said. “I’m not sure the president will approve any such increase anymore, especially with the current economic situation,” he said in reference to Nigeria’s current economic recession that has seen tens of thousands of people lose their jobs, companies shut down, and states unable to pay salaries. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/209879-will-not-increase-fuel-price-kachikwu-says-meeting-buhari.html
