Health / Nigerian Teen Wakes Up From Coma Speaking Spanish After A Head Injury by ahmed486: 6:52pm On Oct 25, 2016

A Georgia teenager who suffered a life-threatening head injury last month while playing soccer awoke from a coma speaking fluent Spanish for the first time in his life.Rueben Nsemoh, 16, shocked family members and doctors when he opened his eyes after a three-day coma and began uttering sentences in Spanish, despite having known only a few words before his accident.

“It started flowing out,” the teen told TIME on Monday. “I felt like it was like second nature for me. I wasn’t speaking my English right, and every time I tried to speak it I would have a seizure.”“It was weird,” Rueben added. “It was not scary at all. I actually liked it a lot. It was really unique to me.”
Another teenager accidentally kicked Rueben on the right side of his head during a game on Sept. 24 after Rueben dove for a loose ball, he said.

Rueben, an aspiring professional soccer player, suffered a severe concussion, went into shock and had to be airlifted to a hospital, according to his mother, Dorah Nsemoh.

Days after being treated in the intensive care unit, Rueben finally started stirring again. He began moving his hand and gesturing for food. And then he blurted out: “Tengo hambre,” or “I am hungry” in Spanish.

“I was very shocked. That’s something he’s never done before. When he got up and he started speaking Spanish, I was confused,” said Nsemoh, a 54-year-old high school teacher who is from Nigeria.

Nsemoh then ran out of the room to find help and brought back a nurse. “A nurse asked me what language does he speak. I said, ‘I speak English. He speaks English. We’re not Spanish-based people,’” Nsemoh said.
Doctors have not told the family why Rueben woke up speaking perfect Spanish, although they have sought consultation with a neurologist.
It’s not unprecedented for patients to start speaking a different language or using different accents after a major trauma. In June, a Texas woman made headlines after she had surgery on her lower jaw and then suddenly started speaking with a British accent.
That case was diagnosed as foreign accent syndrome, a very rare condition in which people speak with a different accent, usually after head trauma or stroke, according to CNN. Severe cases of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and concussions can also cause changes in language function, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Rueben says he could recite just a few phrases in Spanish before his accident. The only ways he had heard Spanish were from his brother, who had previously studied in Spain, and his Spanish-speaking teammates.

In the weeks after the accident, Rueben gradually recovered the ability to speak English, and now he speaks both languages fluently, although he says the Spanish has begun to fade.
Doctors say Rueben’s brain scans suggest he will fully heal, but the family has been overwhelmed by mounting medical bills in the $250,000 range, Nsemoh said. A GoFundMe page for Rueben has collected more than $11,000 to go toward the teen’s medical costs.
“Definitely, it’s a miracle,” Nsemoh said. “My son is awake, I don’t care what language he’s speaking. Whatever went on, he’s alive today and I believe 100 percent in recovery.”

Politics / Herdsmen Attack: Police Deploy SARS In Plateau, Nasarawa And Benue by ahmed486: 7:00pm On Oct 22, 2016

The Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 4, Oshodi Glover, has deployed over 60 personnel of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) to Plateau, Nasarawa and Benue states.

The police chief says SARS officials, who are trained in the act of human right protection, were among those deployed for internal security, fight against insurgents and herdsmen in the states in north-central Nigeria. He hinted that the three-day training of the officers was at instance of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris.

Mr Glover added that the training was consequent to allegation by the Amnesty International, alleging human right abuses and torture by SARS officers.

He further explained the rationale for the early deployment of police personnel to rural communities this year ahead of the dry season, saying it was aimed at forestalling the yearly clashes between herdsmen and local farming communities, when the herdsmen come down the Benue valley for greener pasture.

Politics / Breaking: EFCC Arrests Fani-kayode Again (photos) by ahmed486: 4:12pm On Oct 21, 2016

A former minister of aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode has been re-arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) today, October 21.

Fani-Kayode was arrested outside the Federal High Court Ikoyi, Lagos state.Fani-Kayode being led to a waiting bus by EFCC officials outside the court premises on Friday, October 21.Fani-Kayode’s arrest comes shortly after he alleged that the commission was planning to re-arrest and detain him indefinitely.

He said in statement on Thursday, October 21 that the commission was planning to re-arrest him, even though he had been granted bail by the Federal High Court in Lagos.

“I have been reliably informed by my sources within the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that they are planning to re-arrest and detain me for as long as possible once again even though I have been granted bail by the Federal High Court in Lagos,” he said.

Fani-Kayode being led in a bus by EFCC officials on Friday, October 21.

He said the fresh charges were politically-motivated, noting that there is no truth in or substance to them, Premium Times reports.

According to him, the case had been assigned to a judge and the date for arraignment had been set for November 10 before Justice Tsoho of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

He said: “My lawyers were in court for the original date of arraignment on the 14th of October but for some curious reason the EFCC did not show up on that day,” he said.

“The matter was therefore adjourned till 10th November and my lawyers have given an undertaking to the Judge to ensure that I am in court on that day. They have also written to the EFCC to that effect and our letter was acknowledged by them.

“Because of that the matter is now seized of the court yet the EFCC are still planning to arrest me probably at the premises of the Federal High Court in Lagos after I appear there on Friday 21st October to attend my trial on the trumped up and, again, politically-motivated charges concerning the presidential campaign funds.

“If they do not arrest me then they will arrest me and seek to detain me for as long as possible soon after that. Whichever way they will come and I am ready for them. I am not running.”

Kayode said the commission was eager to hurt and spite him by planning to also detain his wife and his eight-month-old son who have done nothing wrong.

He alleged that the presidency had ordered the commission to keep him out of circulation and off the streets.

Politics / FG Determined To Kill PDP – Wike by ahmed486: 6:36pm On Oct 18, 2016

RIVERS State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, said on Tuesday that the Federal Government was working relentlessly to kill the Peoples Democratic Party.

Wike, however, noted that contrary to the plans of the Federal Government, it was the party (All Progressives Congress) controlling the Federal Government that would die politically. The governor maintained that “deliberate efforts” by agents of the Federal Government to stagnate development in the state would not succeed.

He made this remark while receiving the leadership of Non-Indigenes Without Borders led by Mr. Emeka Onowu at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

According to the governor, “We have a sad situation where everything is being done at the federal level to kill the PDP. However, in the end, it is their own political party that will die.”

Wike decried “repeated plots” to rig the forthcoming rerun elections in Rivers State and added that nobody would be allowed to steal the mandate of Rivers people, no matter the deployment of some compromised security agencies.

He said, “They are repeatedly shifting the date of the rerun elections so that they can have a convenient time to rig. Nobody should be scared of their plan to use the DSS and police to rig the rerun elections.

“The policeman that is carrying gun; how many people can he kill? In Turkey where they resisted the Army, are they not human beings? Nobody will circumvent the mandate of the Rivers people.”

The governor explained that as an opposition state, the people of Rivers were aware that they would have battles for survival from those controlling the federal level.

Maintaining that his action at the residence of a judge on October 8, 2016, was not aimed at stopping the DSS operatives from arresting a judge, Wike said his intervention was targeted at ensuring that the right process was followed.

Earlier in his remark, the National Leader of the Non-Indigenes Without Borders, Mr. Emeka Onowu, lauded the governor for providing leadership that had helped to shapen democracy in the country.

Onowu commended the governor for being detribalised and showing commitment towards addressing issues affecting various interest and ethnic groups in the state.

Politics / Nigerian Man Shocked After Seeing Ex-governor Peter Obi On A Train In The UK (pi by ahmed486: 6:16pm On Oct 18, 2016

A Nigerian man has narrated his encounter with former governor of Anambra state, Mr Peter Obi, on a train in the United Kingdom. The man revealed how awed he was by the politician’s simplicity.

Read what was shared on Facebook by Apga Alaigbo
We do not know each other, but I follow you closely on Facebook. I am from Anambra though I live in the UK. I have heard so much about our former Governor, Mr. Peter Obi.

We became more interested in him after the platform speech. Even in my work place, Nigerians there debated the speech. We agreed that if indeed all he said were reflection of his life, that we have at last discovered a NIgerian fit to be entrusted with national leadership. Though some of us swore that that was how he lived, some of us, including me, were are a bit skeptical.

Today, this morning, as I was in a train going to work, he entered and at first stand when all seats were occupied. He later sat down. Out of curiosity of meeting a Nigerian of his status scrambling for train, I got his pictures.

There is nothing wrong with entering train like every other person. In the UK and others climes, former high government officers join public transport and are happy. In fact this is one of the reasons they strive to lead well, because what they provided would be what they will enjoy.

In the UK, what former Governors and others do is to cruise around city in limousines.

After the snapping, I went to meet Mr. Obi who told me that he would stop at Green Park and that he was going for Commonwealth meeting at Marlborough House. It was happy I met and engaged him.

Politics / Only One Chibok Girl Has A Baby – VP Osinbajo by ahmed486: 4:54pm On Oct 14, 2016

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has said that only one of the 21 released Chibok girls has a baby.

On Thursday evening, Osinbajo led some top government officials to visit the girls at the DSS Medical Centre, Airport Road, Abuja, where they are currently receiving medical attention.

Osinbajo, who was accompanied by the Director-General of the DSS, Mr. Lawal Daura; Minister of Information and Culture, Mr. Lai Mohammed; Minister of Women Affairs, Senator Aisha Alhassan; Minister of State, Budget and National Planning, Zaynab Ahmed; and the Special Adviser to the President on Social Protection Plan, Mrs. Maryam Uwais, later briefed State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The Vice-President disclosed to journalists that the Federal Government did not swap any Boko Haram detainee for the release of the girls.

“There was no exchange of any kind. There was no swap of any kind. Even when we started negotiations, we said we would consider all options available to us. Absolutely, there was no exchange of any kind,” he said.

When asked if the government would consider a swap for the release of the remaining girls still in captivity, Osinbajo said the government would look at all options and weigh them carefully.

“In doing so, however, the security and safety of the country would be considered,” he said.

He said the government would rather use the same template that was used for the release of the 21 girls to secure the release of the remaining ones.

Osinbajo said, “We must be sensitive to the fact that the government wants these girls back and alive. Again, we must balance this against the security and safety of the country.

“In the process of negotiation, we will look at all options and we will weigh the options carefully and decide what to do.

“But what has happened and the process we have begun is one which has not involved any type of swap of Boko Haram commanders or any militant in any way.

“That is a very good turn of event. We believe that in the next few days and months, we will be bringing in more of these girls using exactly the same kind of negotiation and the same template that we used.”

Osinbajo also explained that the International Red Cross did not take part in the negotiations but was involved in the process of bringing the girls back because the government needed the organisation’s medical expertise.

“The Swiss government worked with us in the process of negotiation, but the Red Cross is not involved in the negotiation.

“But in taking the girls back, of course, we worked with the Red Cross because we were unable to take our own medical team.

“The Red Cross was not involved at all in the process of negotiation. It was the Swiss government, our own officials such as the DSS, intelligence and the military,” he said.

The vice-president also said only one of the 21 released girls had a baby.

He said the girls were in good health, considering the circumstances in which they lived in captivity.

He said they would continue to receive medical attention while their parents would join them on Friday.

Osinbajo said, “About an hour ago, I met with the 21 Chibok girls who have been brought back and they are in good health, considering the circumstances they have been held in and they are now being well taken care of in a medical facility.

“They will be staying there for sometime until we are satisfied about their health. Their parents will be coming to join them, hopefully by tomorrow (Friday).

“There will be therapy, there will be counselling. Of course, we can imagine what they have gone through. So, we expect that a lot of psychological therapy and so much needs to be done to get them back.”

Earlier at the DSS Medical Centre, the DSS boss did a roll call of the released girls before the Vice-President.

He thereafter presented the list to Osinbajo as part of the handing over of the girls.

Education / Bayelsa Teachers Meet, Insist On Strike by ahmed486: 6:19pm On Oct 12, 2016

The Bayelsa State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has called on all public primary and secondary school teachers in the state to continue observing the strike declared by the union.

Teachers have been on strike since the resumption of the new academic session to protest unpaid arrears of salaries and other unfulfilled obligations of the government. It was gathered that the NUT had an emergency congress on Monday and resolved that the industrial action should continue.

The body called on the teachers to disregard the directive given by the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) that the teachers should resume work.

The state Chairman of the NUT, Mr. Kalama Tonpre, alleged that the ASUSS might have been compromised and called on the teachers to stay at home until the NUT would call off the strike.

Kalama also called on members of the public to disregard the allegation by the state’s Commissioner for Information that the union had been politicised.

He, however, said the commissioner’s position was his personal opinion which did not represent the standpoint of the state government.

But the state government, yesterday, assured the teachers of prompt payment of their salaries and allowances and appealed to them to call off their strike.

The Commissioner for Education, Mr. Markson Fefegha, gave the assurance during a one day workshop on the preparation of monthly payment vouchers and nominal rolls held at the DSP Alamieyeseigha Memorial Banquet Hall,Yenagoa.

Fefegha said the preparation of vouchers in line with the present administration’s policy on transparency to stop the sharp practices perpetrated by some unscrupulous elements in the system.

He said the seminar would assist in addressing the issue of voucher preparation to ease the payment process adding that the Governor Seriake Dickson-led government was passionate about the teaching profession.

He said: “I am sure that most of you have received the two halves and we are working assiduously so that by next week you would receive your other month salary so that you would not only be at par but will be ahead of other civil servants in the state”.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Jonathan Obuebite, appreciated the principals for their cooperation and urged them to prepare an all-inclusive payroll.

He scored the government high in educational transformation and urged to safeguard the infrastructure built by the government.

Politics / WATCH How NAF Bombards Boko Haram Bases In Sambisa Forest (video) by ahmed486: 7:24pm On Oct 11, 2016

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has stormed the Sambisa forest, the notorious stronghold of the deadly Boko Haram sect.

The video of the operation unveiled by the NAF showed at least two F-7Ni jets and one Alpha jet in a series of maneuvers and target bombings in Goni Kurmi.

The NAF spokesperson, Group Captain Ayodele Famuyiwa, said in a statement issued on October 10 that the fighter jets have bombarded several bases of the terrorists.

Famuyiwa further added that the targets of the bombardement were not chosen arbitrarily but were carefully selected after a determination has been reached from reports of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR).

“Yes, there was impact assessment carried out. Remember targets were not just bombed arbitrarily but carefully selected. Before and after the strike there were ISR missions carried out. Post-strike ISR missions, otherwise called Battle Damage Assessment (BDA) were also conducted at the end of the 1-week operation to be sure the objectives of the operations were achieved. In this case, this has to do with degree of success achieved with respect to the destruction of the selected targets which include new Boko Haram Terrorist (BHT) camps and logistics bases,” he said.

“There are no information as to whether specific BHT leader was hit or not. Of course, it should be expected that there would have been some key individuals among those killed but no information about who they are.”

The Nigerian military recently commenced another round of air interdiction missions codenamed ‘Operation Forest Strom’ in the north-eastern part of the country.

This new phase of offensive air operations is intended at further degrading the capabilities of the Boko Haram insurgents in the Sambisa area.

The Nigerian army said that despite its inability to free the Chibok girls, abducted two years ago from their school in Borno state, troops have recorded great success in the war against insurgency.

Politics / Arms Deal: Buhari Has Ordered Dasuki’s Release But He Needs To Do This First by ahmed486: 7:14pm On Oct 11, 2016

– A top presidential aide has disclosed that President Buhari is tired of detaining Dasuki

– The aide said the president has given oreders that he should be released after the huge cash allegedly mismanaged by him is recovered

– The ECOWAS Court of Justice had last week ruled that Dasuki’s continued detention was unlawful

There are indications that President Muhammadu Buhari, is no longer comfortable with the continued detention of Sambo Dasuki, the former national security adviser.

Vanguard reports that Buhari has reportedly instructed relevant organs handling Dasuki’s corruption case to take steps to recover all the money allegedly looted under him and release him afterwards.

Dasuki was arrested last year and has been in detention since then

This was disclosed by a top aide of the president in Abuja.

The official said: “I can tell you that the president is not comfortable with the continued detention of Dasuki despite the offences he allegedly committed against Nigeria and its people.

“The only condition Mr. President has asked Dasuki to fulfil is to refund the huge sum of public funds which were allegedly diverted under his watch as the NSA. And I want to tell you that we have the approval of Mr. President to release him (Dasuki) from detention as soon as he brings the money.”

Dasuki was arrested last year and has been in detention ever since for allegedly diverting billions of dollars meant for purchase of weapons to fight the deadly Boko Haram sect.

Dasuki had filed a N500million lawsuit against the government for keeping him detained since December 29, 2015 even after he was granted bail by three different high courts where he was arraigned on corruption charges.
On Tuesday, October 4, the ECOWAS Court of Justice ordered the Nigerian government to release Dasuki, while describing his arrest and detention as unlawful. The court ordered the government to pay a fine of N15 million as damages to Dasuki.

Politics / Recession: Bread, Biscuits, Others Prices To Go Up By 15% – AMBCON by ahmed486: 6:10pm On Oct 11, 2016

ASABA – AS Nigerians still grapples with the devastating effect of the economic recession being witnessed in the country, the Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria, AMBCON, has said the prices of bread, biscuits and other related commodities would be increased by 15 percent with effect from 17th of this month.

The Association in a communique after its enlarged joint meeting of the South-South and South-East geo political zones held in Asaba, blamed the development on the high cost of production.Decrying that Nigeria’s economic recession was taking a more dangerous twist, the Association in the communique co-signed by chairman of the Joint Zonal Counci, Sir Hilary Eze, Secretary, Elder Akpan Jude and 12 others from the zones, which include Enugu, Anambra, Edo, Ebonyi, Cross River, Delta and Akwa-Ibom States, said “the adjustment of price is as a result of the sudden increase in the prices of sugar from N7,000 to N19,000, butter from N4,200 to N12,000, yeast from N10,500 to N17,000 and flour from N9,700 to N12,000.

“After considering the impact of the skyrocketed prices of baking ingredients/materials, for the survival of our noble business, which is presently bleeding, the association came to the conclusion to adjust our prices by 15 percent.”

Appealing to the Federal Government to come to their aids, they wondered why all entreaties to the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources to safe them from loosing grip of the business, fell on deaf ears.

Sources in the agency said all the seven judges were released on self-recognition.

The State Security Service has released all the judges arrested during a nationwide sweep between Friday and Saturday, PREMIUM TIMES can report.

Sources in the agency said all the seven judges were released on self-recognition.

“They were all released on bail yesterday(Sunday) on self recognition,” one of our sources said.

“They reported this morning (Monday) and they have all gone back home. They will be coming back tomorrow. And everything went very procedurally well and civil.

“They were released on bail on self recognition based on the fact that given their standing in the society, they cannot run away. They were instructed that they should come back today by 10am.

“They did report for investigation this morning and they have gone back home. And the investigation continues and preparation to charge them to court continued.”

The source added, “Also, action was sequel to lack of cooperation by National Judicial Council. Such as refusal by the NJC to allow the affected persons to be questioned by the DSS. Investigation started some seven months ago, precisely in April 2016.”

The crackdown has continued to generate mixed reactions across the country.

Religion / Muslim Gang Kidnaps, Rapes Christian Teenager Over Refusal To Convert To Islam by ahmed486: 7:45pm On Oct 07, 2016

A Muslim gang in Pakistan has reportedly raped a 17-year-old Christian girl over her refusal to convert to Islam.

The gang was said to have first kidnapped their teenage victim, Jameela and her brother, 20-year-old, Arif, from Kasur, in the east of the country, before carrying out their illicit act on her, as he (the brother) was forcefully made to watch, Daily Mail reports.

Before the abduction, the Muslim gang reportedly targeted and invaded their family home in the small village, Kasur, knowing that they were Christians.

They had also threatened them with guns, sticks and metal poles, allegedly asking them to convert to Islam or die.

The family however refused, and said they were staying resolute to Christianity.

Following their ‘staunch’ refusal, the syndicate reportedly tied up and blindfolded the entire family, but took two of them (Jameela and Arif) to an unknown destination.

The 20-year-old was tortured and forced to listen as his sister’s cry for help while being sexually humiliated, although, luck shone on him and he managed to escape and return to his family.

Reacting to the incident, the British Pakistani Christian Association said they have been assisting the family in Kasur following their ordeal but the victim, Jameela, left behind by her brother in the kidnappers’ den, remains missing.

The chairman of the association, Wilson Chowdry, was quoted to have said, “We will now begin the arduous task of helping them rebuild their lives in an atmosphere of safety. However, the captured daughter Jameela may well never be found.

“Her malicious kidnap is causing great anguish and despair.

“That Muslim despots can kidnap Christian girls with such impunity, is a blight on Pakistan’s international reputation,” Chowdry said.

Politics / Enough Of Unseriuosness, Edo Commissioner Slams Buhari by ahmed486: 7:20pm On Oct 07, 2016

– The state of federal roads in many parts of Nigeria has often given the country’s citizens something to lament about

– One of such citizens and information commissioner in Edo state, Kassim Afegbua, has tasked the federal government on the condition of roads in Lagos

The commissioner for Information in Edo state, Kassim Afegbua, has asked the federal government to stop its rhetorics and concentrate on good governance.

Afegbua said this in a message he posted on his wall on Facebook lamenting the state of the Wharf, Apapa and Tin Can Port roads in Lagos as well as the shutting down of a motion by Senator Oluremi Tinubu to accord the state a special status.

“I want to believe something unusual is wrong with us. I watched Channels tv this evening showing a documentary of the Wharf, Apapa and Tincan Port roads that looked more like uninhabited place on earth.

“When Senator Remi Tinubu talked about giving Lagos a special status, those who were more interested in the messenger rather than the message, shouted her down.

“But a deliberate intervention in the plight of Lagos is not only desirable but of utmost urgency.

“When you juxtaposed this with the unassailable fact that Lagos Port is the gateway to all manners of businesses and a huge revenue spinner for government through customs and excise duties, you will understand why we all are naughts.

“What exactly is it that we need as a nation to get our compass right. Why is it taking this government for ever to give proper attention to this road. If previous government was lacklustre, can’t this one of Baba slowdown, take the initiative?

“We need action no more rhetorics. Those roads are for all of us, hence Lagos must enjoy that special recognition. Enough of pussyfooting,” he said.

WHEN the present administration scrapped the office of the First Lady, mixed reactions greeted the move.

There were those who shrugged off the development as a slight on the female gender, while the more cheeky attributed it to a ploy by the president to protect the current First Lady from the ridicule that had bedeviled her predecessor, whose speeches had been turned into a national standing joke.

Senate President, Bukola Saraki has lost in his bid to have the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Danladi Umar excused from his trial.

The CCT Chair, in a ruling this morning, refused Saraki’s application to that effect.
Saraki is being tried over alleged corruption and false assets declaration.

Saraki had asked Umar to recuse himself from the trial for allegedly making some prejudicial comments in the course of proceedings.

The tribunal said the allegation by Saraki was unfounded, spurious and based on speculation.

Politics / REVEALED: How Officials Steal Food Meant For People Displaced By Boko Haram, IDP by ahmed486: 8:10pm On Oct 05, 2016

Internally displaced persons in Borno State, who were sacked from their communities by Boko Haram, have accused camp officials of continuously stealing and selling food meant for them.

President Muhammadu Buhari had in early September ordered the new Inspector General of police to arrest all persons accused of stealing food meant for IDPs in Borno state.

The order was given shortly after the Nigerian Senate showed its anger over the same theft cases in the displaced persons’ camps.

Officials managing IDP camps within and around Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, have always denied allegations of diverting food donated for the feeding of the displaced persons, mostly women and children.

The Medicines Sans Frontier last week issued a second statement this year in which it claimed hundreds of children with acute malnutrition face the risk of dying due to lack of sufficient relief aides and water.

But in Dalori camp, one of the largest in Borno State, residents said officials continued to keep them in hunger and deprivation because food items were being stolen secretly from the stores at night and taken to the open market for sale.
This was made known when the wife of the Borno State Governor, Nana Shettima, visited some of the camps on Tuesday to monitor the special feeding system for minors which was introduced when a Senate committee led by Oluremi Tinubu visited the camps last week.

The visiting senators had made a personal donation of N2 million to help the children under the age of seven feed properly.
Mrs. Shettima’s task was to ensure the mainly protein meals get to the kids.

The displaced persons, however, seized the moment to speak about their plight to the press.

Woroma Tijjani, a male IDP in his 60s said the food being dished out was grossly insufficient.

“The measure of grains or rice they give a family, for two or three days aren’t enough for just a day. But everyday at night we see them sneaking out our food and taking them outside.”

Fatima Uba, a female IDP from Bama, said “we know government do bring enough food into the camp and are being kept in the stores here; but they won’t bring out enough food for us to cook and eat.”

“The women in the kitchen won’t give us the raw food items to cook by ourselves. Instead, they would rather cook in the kitchen and then dish out portions that won’t be enough for us to feed.

“At night they usually connive with the store officials who would sneak out the food at night and the women would go to sell them for N800 ($2) a measure in the market.

“The officials too won’t listen to our complaints each time we tried to report the matter, because they make so much money from the sales.”
Earlier in August, there was a protest by displaced persons after which the Borno State Government banned central cooking of meals for the displaced persons

The government introduced household feeding system which allows the displaced persons to cook their own food, after receiving uncooked portions from camp officials.

gov-shettimaIn June 2016, the Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, ordered the investigation and possible prosecution of camp officials accused of stealing from the camps’ food store.

It is unclear if the investigation panel made up of the police and other security agencies carried out the governor’s order.
Despite the earlier reports, the camp officials still steal food meant for IDPS, the displaced persons said.

An angry IDP, Ibrahim Ali, a retired local government worker, said, “it may be very difficult to stop them because the system is corrupted.”

“They always know how to cover their dirty tracks here in the camp because government officials lack the routine inspection system.”

Mr. Ali said the corrupt officials know beforehand when an investigation or inspection team is visiting, and they would quickly make things up.

“We don’t always get access to the top officials each time they come here.”

Business / 'further Naira Devaluation Suicide Mission’ by ahmed486: 6:50pm On Oct 05, 2016

The South-South Chamber of Commerce has rejected further devaluation of the naira as suggested by the European Union, saying it is a “suicide mission”.

The Head of Trade and Economic Section of the EU, Fillippo Amato, on Tuesday suggested that the best way out of recession was for Nigeria to further devalue the naira.
In a statement in Lagos on Wednesday, the President of the Chamber and Chairman, National Economic Recovery Committee, Mr. David Iweta, said that further devaluation of the naira without a vibrant export base would be a ‘suicide mission’.

He said, “I, Prince David Iweta, the President, South-South Chamber of Commerce, say in strong terms that further devaluation of the naira without a vibrant export base is a call for suicide mission for our nation’s economy.

“Only recently the Central Bank of Nigeria, devalued the naira from N197.00 to about N320.00 for imports that are eligible into Nigeria, while about 41 items are barred from enjoying such devalued rates.

“Essential commodities like petroleum products cannot even access forex at the rate of N320.00 to the U.S dollars due to the floating rate of the naira between N450.00 to N500.00 to the U.S dollars.

“This has resulted to hyper-inflation and the forex is not available. The reason, amongst others, that was canvassed for the devaluation which is investors’ confidence is unachievable.”

Iweta advised that the EU should channel 50 per cent (22 billion Euros) of the 44 billion Euros flow to Nigeria under the European External Investment Plan (EEIP) to support the private sector.

He said this would support the private sector initiative to produce non-oil commodities for export.

He said that this would be a better way to create jobs and earn foreign exchange that would strengthen the naira instead of devaluation.

Politics / “we Didn’t Know It Was CBN Governor’s Wife We Kidnapped” – Suspect by ahmed486: 6:22pm On Oct 05, 2016

A member of the group that kidnapped Margaret, the wife of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, last week has said he and his gang members were not aware of the identity of the people they abducted.
Margaret and four other persons in her company were kidnapped on Friday along the Benin-Agbor Expressway by armed gunmen.
They were, however, set free less than 24 hours after.
But one of the suspects, Musa Muhammad, said they only embarked on random kidnapping without knowing the identity of their victims.
Muhammad and five other members of the gang, who have been identified as Fulani, are at present telling the police all they know about the kidnapping of Margaret at the headquarters of the Edo State Police Command in Benin.
Muhammad was said to have been arrested a few hours after they released Margaret.
He then led the police to the five other members of the gang who have been arrested so far.
Three other members of the gang are said to be on the run.

Crime / Nigerian Troops ‘kill 5 Kidnappers’ by ahmed486: 2:48pm On Oct 04, 2016

Nigerian troops on Sunday killed five suspected kidnappers at their hideout in Bauchi State, the Army said.

The shootout happened almost at the same time soldiers in in southern part of Borno State arrested a Boko Haram suspect alongside three women believed to be wives of Boko Haram members.

The spokesman of the Nigeria Army, Sani Usman, said in a statement on Sunday that at about 1.30p.m., “troops of 33 Brigade Nigerian Army deployed at Forward Operation Base (FOB) Ningi, on routine patrol, came across suspected kidnappers at Dutsen Makurd, Ningi Local Government Area”.

He said the suspected kidnappers opened fire on the troops, leading to an exchange of fire and the killing of five of the kidnappers.

Mr. Usman said the troops recovered three guns and other weapons.

The statement also said that in faraway Kwaya-Kusar local government areas of Borno, a suspected Boko Haram terrorist, Adamu Nuhu, was arrested.

He was nabbed following a tip-off, Mr. Usman said.

“Similarly, at about 5.43pm yesterday 3 women suspected to be spouses of wanted Boko Haram terrorists and logistics suppliers were arrested at Miringa market by vigilante members in the town”, said Mr. Usman.

Religion / I Never Said Adeboye, Oyedepo Are Fake Men Of God – Oluwo Of Iwo by ahmed486: 2:24pm On Oct 04, 2016

The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, has refuted claims credited to him that he said the General Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, and the Presiding Bishop of the Living Faith World Outreach, Bishop David Oyedepo, are not true men of God.

Oba Akanbi who spoke with The Punch said the report was false, and a plot by online bloggers who twisted a statement he delivered at a lecture.

The monarch stated, “What they are saying is not true, I didn’t attack them. (Adeboye and Oyedepo). I did not say they are not men of God.

“I delivered a lecture organised by the City People Magazine and spoke about the functions of Obas in the 21st Century.

“I said Obas are the representatives of God on earth and men of God are messengers of God. That was where I think they twisted, but I never said they are not men of God.”
