Politics / Over 50 Boko Haram Members Killed In Multiple Attempts To Invade Maiduguri –army by ahmed486: 9:02am On Dec 03, 2014
Source: .com.ng

No fewer than fifty(50) members of the Boko Haram Islamic sect were killed following multiple attempts to invade Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, a security source revealed on Tuesday.

The military source said the soldiers from the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, repelled the expansionist move of the insurgents who attempted to capture Konduga, the closest town to Maiduguri from the eastern axis.
Konduga is about 60 kilometres from Maiduguri, and the insurgents have tried over five times to capture it without success in the last five months.

Also speaking on the incident, a leader of the youth vigilante group, who spoke anonymously with our correspondent, claimed that the insurgents were repelled in Konduga by a joint team of the military and youth vigilante group, with the sect losing many of their men.

He said the battle raged for about three hours from 10.30pm (Monday) to about 1am on Tuesday.

The source, who spoke on the telephone, said, “Nobody can tell you the exact number of the insurgents killed but we have killed many of them, while others escaped with bullets wounds.”

He added that “scores of insurgents met their waterloo when they attempted to attack Konduga town on Monday,” adding that “the insurgents came in Hilux vehicles and motorcycles.”

The youth vigilante members also told our correspondent that it was not however a success story in another encounter with the terrorists’ group, lamenting that an attempt to dislodge them from Damasak captured a week ago was not successful.

He said, “In an attempt to reclaim Damasak, a soldier and member of the Civilian JTF were killed in an ambush.”

The source, who spoke on Tuesday afternoon, said, “Four members of the Civilian JTF are still missing.”

Meanwhile, the management of the University of Maiduguri has banned students from bringing vehicles into the institution’s campus

Politics / Red Cross Mobilises Fund For 150,000 Idps In North-east by ahmed486: 9:38pm On Dec 01, 2014
More than 150,000 people are expected to benefit from the Nigerian Red Cross Society's N480 million emergency appeal fund planned to support its intervention in the North-East of the country.

Speaking at a press conference organized by the humanitarian agency at the weekend, its Secretary General, Bello Diram said the overall objective of the appeal fund is to assist more than 50,000 people in each of the affected states of Adamawa, Yobe and Borno.

According to Diram "around 12,000 people in each of the local government areas of the states would benefit from the Red Cross community based emergency health, water and sanitation, hygiene promotion, relief, psychosocial support and livelihood support initiatives".

He said the situation in the North-East states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe had continued to pose a major humanitarian concern to the agency. "To say the needs are enormous is to say the obvious," Diram said.

He maintained that the Red Cross would continue to address the identified needs of the affected population in the North-East which included food and non-food items.

The Secretary General observed that Nigerian Red Cross was the only humanitarian agency that had unfettered access to almost everywhere in the North-East.

He said: "Since the beginning of the insurgency in Nigeria, we have been providing first aid services, search and rescue, evacuation of the injured to treatment centres and dead body management. We have also been involved in management of internally displaced people from communities to camps set up by the government".

He called on Nigerians, international organizations, within and outside the country to support the emergency appeal fund as it would go a long way to addressing the needs of the affected people.

Politics / 22 Killed As Twin Blasts Hits Maiduguri Monday Market by ahmed486: 8:52pm On Dec 01, 2014
No fewer than 22 persons have been confirmed dead with over 50 sustaining life-threatening injuries after a bomb explosion rocked the Maiduguri Monday Market, this morning, Monday. This figure was provided by an anonymous source at the Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri, where victims were being evacuated. This latest explosion comes barely one week after another bomb blast killed over 60 persons.

” We hope they recover, but I doubt the state of the victims at the moment. We are still waiting as the victims are still being evacuated. I was told it happened around people selling chickens at the Monday Market. I think people have to be very careful this days, especially as we are approaching Christmas and the 2015 elections,” he said.

Speaking with some civil servants at a popular newspaper reading joint in Maiduguri, some of the residents blame politicians for the recent attacks, stating that, if they had allowed full scale state of emergency in the northeast, the situation might not have turned out to be what it is today.

“People are blaming the Presidency for nothing, they forget that even the security chief has advised that a complete state of emergency should be declared in the northeast but our politicians are against it. They are against it because the situation is not affecting them. They have all relocated their families to Abuja, some even to other countries, leaving only the poor to continue to suffer in the hands of the insurgents.

“Look at what happened in Damaturu today, they said the insurgents burnt down Bukar Abba University. They killed many people who went out to pray in the mosques. In Maiduguri here, two days ago, they discover some bombs at a mosque in Federal Lowcost and demobilized ithem a day before that, they discovered another bomb at Customs area and demobilized it. These people want to use all the bomb tactics to kill and finish people and our politicians are busy thinking of 2015.

“The situation in Kano did not calm down because after last Friday bomb attack at the Emir Sanusi’s mosque, the people wanted to go and attack Igbo traders in Sabon Gari before they were arrested. I don’t know where politics is taking us to in this country, but it is very unfortunate that some people are not seeing it they way it is going.” Samson Ada said.

Speaking to Kabiru Dauda, a civil servant, he told our correspondent that, the people of Borno were becoming aware by the day on happenings of the insurgents activities and would no longer start to attack people of other faith or non indigenes in the state due to the crisis. “Everybody has had it bad, except those who are living outside Maiduguri. While we blame our politicians, I believe we should do more of prayers because these people are aiming at destroying the country. It is not about Borno. It is going places now, so let’s pray more.”

For now, there is tension everywhere and members of the vigilante group, Civilian JTF are on the streets for stop and search operation as parents were seen rushing to schools to pick their wards.

Politics / Kano Blast: Atiku Cancels Birthday Celebration, Prays For Victims by ahmed486: 4:11pm On Nov 30, 2014
Source: .com.ng

In reaction to the deadly Kano bomb blast that resulted in the death of over 120 persons, Former vice president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar yesterday evening called off his 68th birthday celebration deciding instead to use the opportunity to pray for the departed souls and the country.

Atiku made this known in a statement posted on his twitter account.
He reiterated that he could not, in good conscience, be celebrating when the nation is grieving so deeply and drenched in blood of innocents.

According to him, “There will be many more years to celebrate birthdays, but tonight is a very sad and sober one for Nigeria. It’s best we just pray at home. I would appeal to all who are able, to send donations in cash and kind to the victims of the bomb blast and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the North -east.”

After Christian and Muslim prayers were said for the victims of the bomb blast and terror attacks, Atiku left the venue.
Politics / Kano Mosque Blast: 'I Saw Two Gunmen Going Into The Mosque, Shooting People' by ahmed486: 8:18pm On Nov 29, 2014
PATCHES of human flesh were strewn right inside the Kano Central Mosque yesterday, as one suicide bomber forced his way into a row of worshippers and detonated a bomb during prayers at Kofa Kwaru quarters in the metropolis.

Scattered around three spots where the coordinated explosions occurred were mangled bodies of over 100 worshippers who were either killed by the explosions or gunshots that followed from gunmen suspected to be allies of the bombers.
Then, there was confusion, as people ran in all directions for safely, with many of them dead or injured in the ensuing stampede.

Thick smoke billowed in the sky and was sighted even from afar. It was a scene of chaos and confusion, fear and anger, as the people of Kano grappled with the reality of yet another deadly bombing in the city.

Palace sources say the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Lamido Sanusi, was out of the country.

But on hearing news of the blasts, he was said to have changed plans and was heading home.

However, top emirate councilors were present during the prayer.

The bombs began exploding soon after the Imam opened the prayers. The first went off when one of the suicide bombers sped past worshippers recklessly in a Toyota Spacewagon, attracting attention.

The second one exploded at a different location near a line of worshippers, while the third one exploded right inside the mosque.

A worshipper, Umar Farouk, said he also sighted two gunmen charging into the mosque, shooting sporadically.

"I saw two gunmen going into the mosque shooting people. One of them was even loading a magazine after exhausting the first one," he said.

Another witness added that apart from the pieces of human bodies on the floor of the mosque, he also spotted human flesh glued to the high-rising frames of the mosque.

"Despite the height of the overhead covering of the mosque, I saw patches of blood and human flesh glued to the frames," he stated.

Another eyewitness said he saw many people screaming in the pool of their blood.

Yet another account said immediately after the detonation of one of the bombs in a suicide bomber's car, other gunmen started shooting at people indiscriminately, an action that geared onlookers to action, leading to the overpowering of two of the gunmen who were allegedly killed before the arrival of security agents.

The Guardian gathered that the gunmen, suspected to be members of the Boko Haram insurgents, went on rampage, shooting sporadically at the crowd of worshippers for about 30 minutes, according to sources, before escaping the scene in black Jeep.

One Nura, who narrowly escaped the blasts, told The Guardian that people reacted angrily to the gunmen, ostensibly in answer to the recent call by the Emir of Kano a few days ago on the people to stand up and start protecting themselves against the insurgents.
Red Cross ambulances, police vans, KAROTA vehicles, tricycles and other private vehicles were busy carrying victims, dead and alive, to Muhammed Abdullahi Wase Hospital.

Efforts to get detailed information from Police and Joint Task Force (JTF) proved abortive. As at the time of filing this report, the exact number of casualties could not be ascertained.

At the Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital where many of the victims were taken, security men kept watch and barred people from going inside the premises.

It was gathered that Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, the Police Commissioner and spokesperson of the command were not in town.

Soon after the blasts, some youths took over the streets of Sabon Gari, destroying property, until security agents arrived and took control of the situation and calm returned to the city.

Yesterday's blast came exactly one week after a suicide bomber rammed into security operatives stationed within the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Mega Filling Station along Maiduguri road in Hotoro area of the city, killing himself and six others, including three security men.

The Kano Central Mosque, located close to the emir's palace, was built more than 500 years ago and plays host to the emir, traditional rulers, government officials, notable personality and hundreds of residents during the traditional Friday prayers.

Many believe the attack must have been targeted at the emir in reaction to his statement against the sect.

The emir and former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor recently advocated self-defense against the terrorists, citing portions in the Holy Quran and reminded Muslims that "whoever die while defending his territory, protecting his property and children are considered myths."

Sanusi posited that the fight against the terrorists should not be left in the hands of the security operatives alone, insisting that unless citizens are prepared to make a sacrifice, the entire country risks the devastating consequences.

Meanwhile, the Chief Medical Director of Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, Dr. Mansur Nagoda has appealed for blood donation from the public to save the lives of the victims.

Scores of victims of the attack were taken to the state-owned specialist hospital for treatment.

Nagoda solicited the public's assistance while speaking with our correspondent on phone over the incident.

He said the hospital is currently short of required blood to meet the urgent needs of the victims in the hospital.

However, he preferred to keep mute on the number of casualties.

Politics / Gbenga Daniel Drops His 2015 Senatorial Ambition by ahmed486: 10:35am On Nov 28, 2014

Immediate past governor of Ogun State, Otunba Olugbenga Daniel has announced his decision to drop his ambition to contest 2015 Senatorial election in Ogun State.

In an exclusive interview in his Lagos home, yesterday, the former governor appreciated the demands on him to contest, especially by people who believed that his doing so would boost their own aspirations.
His words: “The Senate, for me, is not an ambition. On the contrary, the pressure on me to run sometimes is because some people believe that my name will add value to their own aspirations.

‘’They believe that if I run for the Senate, it will rub positively on the tickets of other people.

‘’But I have taken a decision, all things being equal, that I will not run for Senate under this dispensation.

“Or put the other way, I feel that having achieved the required stability within the party, PDP, I can now successfully say that I am bowing out of the senatorial race. That does not stop me from supporting all the people that I need to support.”

Otunba Daniel who spoke on many issues remarked that Ogun State has a master plan for development, which any incoming administration can use to take the state to greater heights instead of attempting to diminish the legacies of their predecessors.
Politics / Aregbesola Sworn In, Says Enough Of Pdp-led FG by ahmed486: 8:50am On Nov 28, 2014
.com.ng

All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders on thursday showered encomiums on the Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, as he took the oath of office for a second time as governor of the state.

Aregbesola stated that in 2015, “Nigerians are going to say enough is enough to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the APC would defeat the PDP because it is beatable.”
The oath of office was administered by the Chief Judge of state, Justice Adepele Ojo, who equally performed the same ritual for the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Titi Laoye.

Aregbesola defeated the PDP candidate in the August 9 governorship election, Senator Iyiola Omisore.

According to him, “the God that helped us to beat them (PDP) in the state, will also beat them for us in the national election. Do not be afraid, do not be hopeless. Victory is at hand.”

Aregbesola who promised more development in the state stressed that “what we need now are God-fearing and incorruptible leaders who would galvanise our people and judiciously manage our resources to overcome our challenges.

“We must terminate the regime of self-seeking manipulators which currently parade the corridors of power, accruing political profit by turning us against one another and further dividing us along ethnic and religious lines.”

The governor opined that the result of PDP politics of division is that Nigerians are poorer in the last 16 years, whereas Nigeria as a country has never been richer, save for recent months when oil price has declined.

“This manifests again in their continued lawlessness evidenced in the desecration of the National Assembly and the travesty at Ekiti State House of Assembly,” he said.

Aregbesola also noted that the PDP had demonstrated without doubt, its inability to protect Nigerians and the territorial integrity of the country, saying Nigerians must therefore be determined to vote out the party which he said had brought the country to this state and show the party the way out.

He said: “Our party, the APC, promises prosperity, national unity and integration, security of lives and property, job and wealth creation, rule of law and constitutionalism and deepening democracy,” nothing that all these have been showcased “in all the states where our party holds way-Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Ekiti (until recently), Edo, Imo, Rivers, Kwara, Nasarawa, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kano, Borno and Yobe.”

Also, leader of the APC, Senator Bola Tinubu, has charged the people of Osun State to arm themselves with whatever they have to defend the 2015 general election and liberate themselves from the PDP-led government.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony, Tinubu charged the people on what he described as ‘Common Sense Revolution’, saying the people should stand firm to defend their votes in 2015 as they did in Osun State.

He lambasted the crisis in the oil industry, suggesting that it is time to go back to our local produce like banana, cocoyam and cocoa.”

Tinubu, who lauded the people of the state for standing firm to defend their votes despite the presence of armed security men, assured them that APC will reclaim their mandate in Ekiti State.

“I want to charge you to buy rings, amulet and whatever you have in your capability to defend the 2015 election as you did in Osun State.

“I salute your steadfastness to make over 30,000 armed policemen shameful. I want to assure you that what they stole from us in Ekiti State will be reclaimed,” he stated.

Also in his remarks, former interim National Chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande, described the coming back of Aregbesola as the opportunity for the applicants and unemployed, saying: “Full employment for the youths is the next in the agenda of the governor.”

The ceremony had in attendance former governors, chieftains of the party presidential aspirant under the platform of APC, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), among others
Politics / A Vote For PDP Is Vote For Insurgency, Corruption, Unemployment — Atiku by ahmed486: 8:34am On Nov 28, 2014
Former Vice President and All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential aspirant, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, yesterday, in Enugu, warned Nigerians, that a vote for Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in 2015 general elections, was a vote for continuation of insurgency, kidnapping, oil bunkering, corruption and unemployment, among others.

The former Vice President insisted that the PDP had nothing to offer Nigerians, but how case propaganda, blaming insurgency, kidnapping, and lack of jobs.
Addressing Enugu State delegates, ahead of APC national convention, Atiku said PDP-led government was very good at practicing government of propaganda, lamenting that since he grew up, he had never seen Nigeria governed the way it was being governed today with no sense of direction and purpose.

He said: “The PDP government is only good in propaganda. They build railways only on television. There is insecurity everywhere. There is unemployment.

Most of the problems in this country, insurgency, kidnapping, oil bunkering is done by youths because they don’t have jobs.

Once they have jobs, they will not engage in such.

None of them boasts of this experience.

I have contributed to democracy more than all of them. Even when the situation favoured me personally, I rejected it for the benefit of the entire country.

Records are there for everybody to see.

I have prepared myself.

I have experience and I want to serve.

If you go to APC states, you see what the Governors are doing. If you go to Rivers, Nasarawa, Lagos, Sokoto, you will see what the Governors are doing. You can see it.”

He said he decided to join the presidential race to make a change, and save the country from destructioin, arguing that APC, as reformers, would change in Nigeria for the better.

Atiku added that he was the most suitable among the four aspirants vying for the APC presidential ticket, having had the longest political experience, occupied the highest political office in a democracy and worked in every part of the country.

Speaking on behalf of the Enugu delegates, a member of APC Board of Trustees, BOT, Brigadier General Joseph Okoloagu, (retd), said he was convinced that Atiku Ababukar had the capacity to deliver the country, if given the chance.

Politics / Jonathan, Governors, Others Keep Long Motorcades, Private Jets As Nigeria.... by ahmed486: 5:45pm On Nov 27, 2014
President Goodluck Jonathan, and other officials of his administration, as well as governors and heads of the National Assembly are not letting off any of their conveniences as Nigeria battles dwindling revenues, retaining extra-large convoys and travel teams, and flying private jets and first class with public money while the same government says the nation must accept cutbacks to counter the oil crisis.

While the president and the governors have retained their long motorcades, the senate president, David Mark, and House of Representatives speaker, Aminu Tambuwal, are doing just the same.
Official convoys of the president averages 40 cars, those of the governors exceed 20. Mr. Mark’s convoy as of this week remained at least 12.
Governors travelling around the country mainly for their political needs continue to use private jets, maintained and fuelled at huge cost to public purse.
Only a few governors use public airplanes when travelling. An example is the Cross River State governor, Liyel Imoke. Former Anambra governor, Peter Obi, also did.
Rolling back official conveniences, no matter how little, are usually some of the first steps for nations battling economic downturns. Reduction in official vehicles could help save fuel and maintenance cost.
Nigeria is one of the countries worst hit by the dwindling oil price which currently hovers around $78 per barrel.
With no reprieve, President Goodluck Jonathan last week asked the National Assembly to lower Nigeria’s oil price benchmark from $78 per barrel to $73, to cushion further shocks at the international market, and to grow the Excess Crude savings which the government has turned to in recent months, to help pay workers’ salaries.
Finance Minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has said the government is planning higher taxes on high taste products such as champagne, and top range automobiles, to compel the rich to pay more to help the government deal with the situation.
She said the government will significantly minimize foreign travels, and purchase of new equipment in the 2015 budget.
The proposals remain to be seen.

Politics / Devaluation - Naira Hits N186 In Black Market by ahmed486: 9:47pm On Nov 26, 2014
Source: .com.ng

THE exchange rate for the dollar in Abuja "black market" on Wednesday stood at between N182 and N186, an investigation by a News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent found.

This is against the new official exchange rate N168 announced on Tuesday by the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Godwin Emefiele.
The NAN correspondent, who checked near the Sheraton Hotel, Zone 4, Abuja, the rendezvous for most black market operators, found that the closest naira exchange to the official exchange rate was N182.

Some of the operators told NAN that the difference between their rate and the official rate was to accommodate the "extra charges" they pay to "dealers" they get the hard currency from.

A black market operator, Alhaji Usman Gongola, told NAN that he sold one dollar at N186 and bought one dollar for N183.

Another operator, Alhaji Bello Abdullahi, said he sold at N184 and bought one dollar for N182.

Also speaking, Alhaji Mohammed Bichi, told NAN that he sold one dollar at N182 and bought one dollar for N181.

The CBN on Tuesday announced a new exchange rate of N168 to one U.S. dollar as against the old rate of N155 to one dollar.

The CBN governor told newsmen at the end of the Monetary Policy Committee meeting in Abuja on Tuesday that the measure was to strengthen the economy, following continued slid of oil price in the international market.

Part of the measures, as announced by Emefiele, was an increase in lending rate from 12 per cent to 13 per cent.
Politics / 2015: Please, Vote For My Husband, Patience Begs Women by ahmed486: 4:25pm On Nov 25, 2014
Source: .com.ng

With the 2015 presidential elections around the corner, wife of the President, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, on Monday in Abuja pleaded with Nigerian women come out en mass to vote for her husband, President Goodluck Jonathan in the forthcoming election.

She assured the women that only Jonathan can protect and defend their rights among all the aspirants for the seat.
She also asked women to actively participate in the on-going electoral processes in the country, saying it was time for them to compete favourably with their male counterparts for elective positions.

Patience, represented by the Minister of Water Resources, Mrs. Sarah Ochekpe, made the remarks while declaring open a two-day National Conference on Women and Elections, with the theme, “Enhancing Opportunities for Women Candidates,” organised by the United Nations Development Programme in collaboration with the Federal Ministry for Women Affairs.

She asked the electorate not to yield to the advances of other aspirants, saying they could not guarantee their freedom.

“I want to once again, urge you to continue to give support to our dear President, who has shown that he is not only gender sensitive but believes in the power and capacity of women to bring about change in society. He has been doing his best to promote the interest of women in Nigeria. It is now time for us to show him our appreciation for all he has been doing as he seeks re-election, “she said.

While applauding the roles women were playing to positively transform the society, she noted that more Nigerian families were investing in girls’ education, saying the development would make women to be politically and economically independent.

She said, “It is gratifying that more families are today investing in girls’ education and there are pointers to the fact that in the nearest future, more women will be politically and economically independent.

“However, there is the need to create the enabling environment to enhance women active participation in all areas of development. We must as women begin to aggressively unite, network and build alliances across gender divide in order to secure meaningful change.”

In her speech at the occasion, the Women Affairs Minister, Hajia Zainab Maina, regretted that women were not being taken along in decision and law making.

She said, “The number in terms of female representation in Nigeria reflects the almost exclusion of women. With less than seven per cent representation in elective positions, Nigerian women are among the less represented women in any sense when critical decisions, especially law making and distribution of the country’s resources that have unprecedented impacts on their lives are made.”

The Nigerian presidency was on Sunday exposed for deceptively claiming projects executed by the Kano State Government as part of the legacy projects executed by the President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration in the North-West geopolitical zone of the country.

Politics / Ceasefire Negotiation Still On-going – FG Insists by ahmed486: 7:20am On Nov 24, 2014
The president Goodluck Jonathan-led administration has insisted that the alleged negotiation of ceasefire between The Nigerian military and Boko haram islamic sect was still on-going. This is despite the denial of the sect leader, Abubakar Shekau of existence of any such talks between his group and the government

In a report by the Hausa Service of the BBC, monitored in Jos, Minister for Special Duty and Chairman, Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Peaceful Resolutions of Security Challenges in the North, Alhaji Aminu Tanimu Turaki (SAN), said the dialogue with the sect has not broken down as being variously speculated in some quarters.

According to him, in every ceasefire deal, not all members of a given group always unanimously understand and agree with an issue. He explained that if Shekau alone has denied the existence of any negotiation with his group, that does not mean that the whole deal had been truncated.

He added that the fact that Shekau had disagreed with the deal does not mean that that the government would not continue the discussion with those members of the sect who are willing and ready for peace negotiations.

Turaki said, “the Federal Government is still discussing with Boko Haram on the ceasefire deal. Shekau was quoted to have denied the deal between government and his group . If Shekau alone refuses to agree, that does not mean that the talk is no longer possible.

“We are still discussing with the group and Shekau alone cannot stop our efforts. We are still dealing with those members who are still interested in the deal and Shekau cannot stop them,” he added.

Turaki further disclosed that there are currently two committees, one in Chad and the other in Nigeria, handling the negotiations. He said he belonged to the one in the country even as he assured that the government was committed to end the Boko Haram insurgency in the Nigeria.

Politics / 2015 Election: Atiku Considers Four Govs For His Running-mate, Here They Are… by ahmed486: 11:43am On Nov 23, 2014
In preparation for the December 10, 2014 presidential primary of the All Progressives Congress, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar is said, according to Punch, to have commenced the search for a viable running mate.

It was learnt in Abuja, on Friday that Atiku, who is one of five contenders for the party’s sole ticket, has started consultations with regards to a running mate for the 2015 presidential election.
It was also gathered that three factors are likely to influence his choice. The factors are said to include political balance, religious balance, and competence.

A document to this effect was sighted in Abuja by our correspondent.

On issue of political balance, the aspirant is said to be considering the need to balance the political interests of the North/South.

The South comprises of the three geo-political zones of the South namely: South-South, South-East and South-West.

Using this as a basis, members of his team pushing for this argue in support of one of the four serving APC governors: Babatunde Fashola of Lagos (South-West); Rochas Okorocha of Imo (South-East); Rotimi Amaechi (South-South) and Adams Oshiomhole also of the South-South.

Although this could appease the party’s governors, some fear the political calculations could alter this arrangement. For example, in the case of Okorocha, there are fears that his political value is limited and picking him could cost the aspirant South-West votes. In contrast, if the Lagos State governor, Babatunde Fashola, is given the slot, it is believed that critical South-West votes could be secured. There is however the controversial issue of Muslim-Muslim ticket which could become an albatross.

For Governor Rotimi Amaechi, some argue that he can only deliver a limited number of South-South votes.

His counterpart in Edo State, Governor Adams Oshiomhole, is also said to be in control of few votes which some argue will be limited to his native Edo State.

A source who asked not to be named for fear of retribution said to navigate this potential political landmine, “Atiku can take a Tinubu nominee. By doing so, Atiku would be satisfying a desire by the APC leader to play a role at the federal level. This will without doubt deliver the votes, especially from the South-West.”

The source further explained that the former Vice-President might look in the direction of either Fashola or Mr. Wale Edun.

Supporters say Fashola’s acclaimed competence and performance as governor makes him stand tall but will depend on Tinubu’s nod.

Another Tinubu close associate who is also being considered is Mr. Wale Edun. His choice could fit into the religious equation. He is also considered competent, smart and intelligent.

Several commentators have argued that Nigerians will not back a ticket dominated by same religion ticket.

For this reason, Atiku may look in the direction of three persons namely Professor Yemi Osinbajo, Dr. Kayode Fayemi and Senator Olorunnimbe Mamora.

Professor Osinbajo is leading member of Tinubu’s inner circle. He is a serving Pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of God and a close associate of Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the RCCG. Many Christians are likely to support this choice.

A former Ekiti State governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, is equally in contention, his loss of the Ekiti governorship election notwithstanding.

Should Senator Olurunminbe Mamora be picked, it is expected that former and serving Senators nationwide will be fully mobilised to work for such a ticket.

But when contacted, the coordinator of the Atiku Media Office, Shehu Garba, denied knowledge of the existence of such a document.

He said, “The aforesaid document is unknown to us but what we can confirm is that the Turaki will pick a man or woman as running-mate as agreed by the leadership of the party when he gets to that bridge.”
