Politics / Re: Pressure On Probe Of Buhari Campaign Funding Grows by ahmed486: 10:55am On Jan 11, 2015
What if Buhari lost again? what will happen?
blemon44:
Civil rights group, The Peoples Forum, PF, has joined the demand for investigation into the alleged funding of the campaign of the presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress, APC, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd).
The Forum also called for the probe of the purported endorsement of Buhari for the 2015 presidential election by the Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND).
The spokesman of PF, Elias Kaka, said in Lagos, at the weekend, that the probe of the funding of Buhari’s campaign was necessary despite the denial by the Buhari Campaign Organisation, in order to put the records straight.
“Despite the denial that Buhari’s campaign is not being bankrolled by some unnamed Arab countries, there is the need for thorough investigation on the matter against the backdrop of the extant security challenges and the purported islamization of the country by some faceless groups”, the spokesman said.
Last year, Boko Haram had agreed to dialogue with the Federal Government only if such dialogue be held in Saudi Arabia and Buhari be appointed as an intermediary.
This had raised dust and suspicion of a likely Arab connection.
But the Buhari Campaign Organisation denied being funded by any foreign organization, dismissing as ‘laughable’ reports that he was awaiting funds from unnamed Arab establishments/countries to prosecute his campaign.
Kaka said the endorsement by MEND lent credence to the suspicion to the growing concern for further investigation.
“On Tuesday, the spokesman of MEND, Jomo Gbomo, in a statement, claimed that the militant group had endorsed Gen. Buhari for the 2015 presidential election, launching a scorching attack on President Goodluck Jonathan,”the PF spokesperson said.
“But President Jonathan has dismissed the alleged endorsement of Buhari by MEND, saying no person who means well for the country should be excited by the endorsement of a terrorist organization.
“Despite this, the issues need thorough investigation to set the records straight considering the insecurity challenges the country is being faced and in order to avoid heating up the polity. The election is around the corner, anything that will set the country ablaze must be avoided”, the PF said.

Politics / Nigeria Won’t Break Up This Year – US by ahmed486: 1:21am On Jan 11, 2015
The United States Government has said that there are no signs that Nigeria will disintegrate before, during or after the February general elections.

While explaining that Nigeria was indeed facing “big challenges,” the US Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. James Entwistle, stated that the problems at stake were surmountable.

According to the top American envoy, Nigerians should “throw out of the window” the idea from “some think-tank or somebody outside the (US) government” stating that Nigeria was going to fall apart in 2015.

Entwistle spoke in Lagos on Thursday, during an interactive session with select journalists on the recent donation of a US naval ship, christened, “NNS Okpabana” to the Nigerian Navy.

The US diplomat said, “I have been plagued by the question (on Nigeria’s 2015 disintegration) and I have gone back to look and I can’t find any government report that said Nigeria would disintegrate in 2015. Maybe some think-tank or somebody outside the government said it; I don’t know.

“But in my opinion as the US Ambassador to this country, I am not worried in the least that Nigeria is going to disintegrate in 2015. Regardless of what someone may have said, the question is that we are now here in 2015: Do we see signs that Nigeria is going to disintegrate or fall apart or something? I don’t know what you think. But I don’t see those signs.

“But I see signs of growth, optimism and I see that to minimise the challenges that you have, in this life, you have to keep on keeping on, and I think the future is quite bright.”

Entwistle added that if the Federal Government did what was needed to be done in the coming years, especially as pertaining to “security, corruption and all of these things,” the future of Nigeria would be “very bright.”

He debunked the insinuation that the President Barack Obama administration had imposed “an arms embargo” on Nigeria following the reported refusal of the American government to sell Cobra helicopters to the Federal Government to prosecute the ongoing war against terrorism.

Citing human rights considerations for the development, Entwistle hinted that the US Diplomatic Mission to Nigeria was “still talking about a number of other types of equipment and different types of helicopters that might be more appropriate” for the Nigerian military services.

Respecting human rights among the civilian population, he argued, should not be an impediment to fighting terrorism in the three north-eastern states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe.

He added, “Sometimes the criticism of us (the United States) is that we don’t care about fighting terrorism, but we care about human rights. My reaction is that I don’t believe that you have to choose between fighting terror and protecting the civilian population. I think you can do both at the same time.

“As you fight terror, you also have to protect the civilian population and keep them on your side. We have learnt the hard way in our own counter-terrorism experience that if you lose the trust and support of the civilian population, you have lost everything. We (Nigeria and America) have had that conversation and indeed much of the (military) training that we have done with the army over the years have focused

Politics / Escape From Boko Haram: ‘I Kept Stepping On Dead Bodies’ by ahmed486: 11:40pm On Jan 10, 2015
Yanaye Grema hid for three days between a wall and his neighbours’ house, as Boko Haram fighters ransacked his hometown of Baga on the shore of Lake Chad in Nigeria’s far northeast.

The 38-year-old fisherman already knew the attack was serious: he joined civilian vigilantes to defend the town but their simple weapons were no match for the Islamists’ superior firepower.

“People fled into the bush while some shut themselves indoors,” he said of last Saturday’s attack.

“The gunmen pursued fleeing residents into the bush, shooting them dead,” he told AFP from the Borno state capital, Maiduguri.

But it was only after breaking cover on Tuesday night that he realised the true scale of the attack, which it is feared may be one of the worst in the six-year insurgency.

“For five kilometres (three miles), I kept stepping on dead bodies until I reached Malam Karanti village, which was also deserted and burnt,” he said.

Local officials this week said the attack forced at least 20,000 people from Baga and other settlements in and around Lake Chad to flee, many of them across the border.

Nearly 600 others had been stranded on an island on the lake without food, water or shelter.

– Looting and burning –

The attack wasn’t the first on Baga. Nearly 200 people were killed in April 2013, when militants stormed the town and set much of it on fire, prompting fierce fighting with the Nigerian military.

This time, the Islamists met less resistance and were able to take over the town and overrun the headquarters of the Multinational Joint Task Force, which is based there.

At least 16 towns and villages in the area were razed.

Security analysts believe the targets of last weekend’s attack were the civilian vigilantes helping the military in the counter-insurgency.

Hiding from view between the wall and the house, behind a roadside stall and the cover of a thick neem tree, Grema said the rampaging Islamists unleashed mayhem.

“All I could hear were ceaseless gunshots, explosions, screams from people and chants of ‘Allahu Akbar’ (God is greatest) from the Boko Haram gunmen,” he added.

“I remained in my hiding place until Tuesday evening.

“Every night when it was dark, I would furtively scale the fence into my house to quickly eat garri (processed cassava granules) and drink water and go back to my hideout.”

His family was not at home. They were in Kukawa, 40 kilometres (25 miles) away, paying their respects after Boko Haram killed his wife’s cousin about two months ago.

“Some of the Boko Haram gunmen camped outside the Baga main market just 700 metres from my hideout,” he explained.

“At night I could see lights from the power generator they ran. I could also hear their cheering and laughter.

“Luckily on Monday some of the gunmen withdrew while others stayed in the town. This reduced their number, which made it difficult for them to patrol the whole town. It worked to my advantage.

“On Tuesday they began looting the market and every home in the town… Around 6:00 pm (1700 GMT) they set fire to the market and began burning homes. I decided it was time I leave before they turn in my direction.

“Around 7:30 pm I ventured out of my hiding and started to walk away from the noise coming from the gunmen. It was dark, so no-one could see me.”

– Nomad herdsman –

In the bush, Grema chanced upon an old man at a nomadic Fulani herdsmen’s settlement, who advised him to move west to avoid running into the militants.

“His warning frightened me but made me more determined to get away. I thanked him and moved on,” he said.

“I quickened my pace. I soon caught up with… four women. One of them was carrying a baby on her back.

“They told me they were among hundreds of women that were arrested by Boko Haram and detained in the home of the district head which Boko Haram had converted into a women’s detention centre.”

Three of the women had been separated from their children, he added.

Grema said he pushed out on his own, as the women were “too slow”, running and walking throughout the night, before arriving at Kekeno village near Monguno, 65km away, the following morning.

On Thursday, he took a bus from Monguno to Maiduguri.

“I will never forget this experience and I will forever be grateful to the old Fulani nomad for his life-saving advice,” he added.

Politics / Bukola Saraki, James Ibori, Kingibe, Others Framed Iyabo For Corruption — Obasan by ahmed486: 11:31pm On Dec 10, 2014
Former president Olusegun Obasanjo has alleged that a “cabal” surrounding late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua framed corruption charges against his daughter, Iyabo when she was a senator in order to get back at him because of his personal views against them.

He has previously been openly accused of incest and adultery by his son, Gbenga, who sought to divorce his wife alleging that his father was sleeping with her.
“My adversaries tried other means to get to me,” he stated.

“If Obasanjo could not be cut down to size, they must have thought, what about those close to him, including his daughter? When Senator Iyabo, my daughter, was accused of corruption, I took my time to have a serious interview with her on what exactly had transpired.

She briefed me in detail and I was satisfied.

“But I did not stop there.

I spoke with the Senate President, who also briefed me and assured me that Iyabo had not committed any offence as he had personally looked into the matter.

I was again reassured but did not stop there. I talked to another senator, Mrs. Ekaette, who was a member of the health committee of which Iyabo was chairman.

Mrs. Ekaette again satisfied me with her explanation.

I was advised to talk to President Yar’Adua but I refused to do this, especially as I was told he was expecting me to.

Instead, I advised Iyabo to hand the matter over to Chief Afe Babalola, a lawyer and friend, to deal with it through the court process. She was discharged and acquitted by the court.

“The fact that my ordeal, and that of my daughter, occurred under the administration of President Yar’Adua, who was brought into power by God through me, did not surprise me.

I have always held to a belief that any person who expects commendation, praise, eulogy, or credit from any human being might die a frustrated wretch.”

He named some members of the “cabal” as Tanimu Yakubu Kurfi and Baba Kingibe “aided and supported by two governors – Bukola Saraki and James Ibori – for their own personal and selfish reasons”.

This was part of the revelations in his yet-to-be-released three-part volume of his memoirs titled My Watch, which was exclusively obtained by an online journal, The Cable Alert.

He had also accused Goodluck Jonathan’s administration of inducing Iyabo to attack him while pointing accusing fingers at governors during his tenure of sponsoring the third term bid.

Politics / 27 Boko Haram Members Killed In Adamawa, Bauchi by ahmed486: 8:17am On Dec 10, 2014
No fewer than 27 Boko Haram militants have been gunned down by soldiers of the Nigerian army forces in the country's north-eastern state of Borno.

Soldiers clashed with the insurgents in the Balmo, Lame and Hildi forests in Adamawa and Bauchi States, South Africa's Independent Online reported, citing a Nigerian Defence Ministry statement, without specifying when the fighting took place.
“Motorcycles, hundreds of rounds of ammunition and bows and arrows were recovered from the fleeing terrorists,” according to the defence ministry.

Providing more details, PRNigeria, a media advisory firm for the security agencies in the country, added that during a hot pursuit of the terrorists around Hildi, Adamawa State, at least seven of the terrorists lost their lives while a total of five rifles, hundreds of rounds of ammunition as well as bows and arrows were recovered from them.

“During another special raid operation conducted on Balmo and Lame forests linking Borno, Bauchi and Adamawa States, the determined troops recovered rifles and a number of motorcycles after a stiff resistance by terrorists was crushed. Over 20 of them lost their lives while some were reported wounded.”

The Defence Spokesman, General Chris Olukolade, who confirmed the incidents to PRNigeria, said six soldiers were wounded in the encounter.

At the end of the encounter, troops eventually took firm control of the forest location.

Meanwhile, the campaign against terrorists’ activities is continuing with air and land operations being conducted in various theatres in parts of the country.

In another incident, Nigerian troops have seized documents containing a list of communities to be attacked by Boko Haram and sketches of the towns from fleeing terrorists in Adamawa State.

Politics / 211 Minna Prison Inmates Still On The Run - Prison Controller General by ahmed486: 9:14pm On Dec 07, 2014
Following the invasion of Minna medium prison by gunmen, The Comptroller General of Prisons, Dr. Peter Ekpendu, on Sunday revealed that 211 of the 270 inmates freed by the gunmen are yet to be found while 64 of them have been rearrested.

Ekpendu stated this while briefing newsmen on the situation of the prison following the weekend attack by the gunmen during which prison guards were overpowered.
“I wish to state categorically that the incident, which took place less than 24 hours after handing and taking over between my predecessor and I is very unfortunate. It is completely unacceptable. We have to say any officer found culpable or found wanting will face the full wrath of the law.

“Meanwhile, I have ordered the immediate transfer of 55 officers of the state and zonal headquarters in the state to report at this prison and the old prison, Minna, to beef up security,” he said.

While appreciating the complementary efforts of the Army,Police, SSS and other security agencies in stabilising the security of the area, Ekpendu said search parties had been dispatched and spread over the state to apprehend the fleeing inmates.

He said added that investigation into the matter had commenced and rule out the involvement of Boko Haram in the attack.

The CGP said, “Modalities to checkmate these attacks are being put in place by my administration and I want to assure you of the peace of this prison and that of all prisons nationwide.

“On the last question of whether Boko Haram could be involved, preliminary report and having gone round the prison facilities and taken briefs from the officer in charge, the Comptroller of Prisons, there is no evidence to link Boko Haram with the incident of yesterday in this prison.”

Politics / Nigeria’s Democracy Will Die In Absence Of Credible Election by ahmed486: 12:28pm On Dec 07, 2014
The Senate President, David Mark, on Saturday said free, fair and credible election was required in 2015 to safeguard and sustain democracy in Nigeria.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary Paul Mumeh said Mark spoke to delegates to Saturday’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) House of Representatives’ primary election in Otukpo, Benue.
He said in spite of the various challenges in the country, “Nigerians have come to the inescapable conclusion that democracy is the way to go.’’

He expressed satisfaction with the orderly conduct of the election and urged his people to sustain such in the 2015 elections.

According to him, I always want to lead by example. You can see from the conduct of my people here that my constituency is most peaceful.

“You cannot find us quarrelling or creating an atmosphere of disaffection because we do things in a dignified manner.

“We believe in justice, equity and fair play. Above all, we allow the will of God and the will of the people to prevail.

“For us, the people are the kings and we act in tandem with their wishes and aspirations’’, Mark said.

The senate president urged politicians to abide by laid down rules and wishes of the electorate to avoid acrimony in the polity.

Politics / The Rise And Rise Of Diezani Alison-madueke by ahmed486: 11:40am On Dec 07, 2014
Whatever the Nigerian Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke, has been doing in the past ten years, let those who know the woman encourage her to keep doing them. Or how else can anybody explain her meteoric rise in the political waters like ours where dangerous male sharks swim with petulant violence devouring smaller species of their kind, let alone the fairer gender. Mrs Alison-Madueke has defied masculine elbows and rough tackles in the male-dominated business world and polity to climb, perhaps, to the top of the mountain of her public service career at least, for now. Yes, with her election on November 27 (this year) in faraway Vienna, the historic capital of Austria, at the 166th meeting of the OPEC Conference as the President of Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), the Nigerian petroleum minister has added once again another feather to what is fast becoming an overloaded cap.

For the records, Alison-Madueke is the longest serving minister in President Goodluck Jonathan’s cabinet having been appointed for the first time as minister of transport in 2007 by the late president, Umaru Musa Yar’ Adua. She was to serve later as minister of mines and steel development from 2008 to 2010 when she broke the record to be appointed Nigeria’s first female minister for petroleum resources by President Jonathan. Also, before her current rise in Vienna as the head of OPEC, Alison-Madueke also holds the record as the first female alternate president of the cartel, a position she still occupies until January 2015, when she will formally take over from the incumbent and Libyan Vice Prime Minister for Corporations, Abdourhman Atahar Al-Ahirish as the substantive OPEC President. The rise of Alison-Madueke to the top of the oil cartel, OPEC, ought to be seen therefore as a significant victory for women not only in Nigeria and Africa but also the world over. It is a good omen that the world is fast coming to terms that gender is only a social statistic, which does not determine effectiveness and superior performance.

Moreover, Alison-Madueke comes with a rich vein of experience, which will certainly put OPEC in good stead especially at a turbulent period in the global oil market. She was a staff of the Anglo-Dutch oil giant, the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC) where she rose to become the first Nigerian female executive director.

Thus, Alison-Madueke is expected to bring her huge industry experience in tackling the oil price crisis currently facing OPEC member states. Already she is providing a dizzying hint that she is confident, ready and fully abreast with all the evolving issues at stake as was gleaned from her statements at a dinner organised for her by the Nigerian Embassy in Vienna.

Alison-Madueke said, “When you are in the position, you are also able to relate across board in a very operational way with member countries and also non-member countries of OPEC as well who today are putting a lot of volumes of production in the market. As seen today in the downward spiral in price of crude oil, Saudi Arabia is not the only big producer but it is the only OPEC member in the big oil producers and so there is a lot of balancing that needs to be done and of course, in that position, you are at the forefront of doing that. You are also at the forefront of ensuring energy security which is a major issue globally for us at this point in time.

“We will also be ensuring that our economies and not just OPEC member countries but of African countries that are now at the forefront of producing oil and gas are also given the frameworks to create enabling environment to allow us to become much more competitive in today’s global crude oil market.

That is a critical objective because the end-user markets are becoming fewer at this time and we must be competitive if we are going to step in there and grab a good percent of the market share of the end user market.”
For us as a nation, the election of Alison-Madueke to the OPEC presidency is something worthy of celebration not just because she is the first woman to be so elected but more importantly because of the global visibility her reign will bestow on our country. With the Nigerian Minister sitting atop OPEC, be sure that the narratives about our country will no longer centre around negative issues like the Boko Haram insurgency that the enemies of the country are pushing to the front burners of the international media.

There is no iota of doubt that Alison-Madueke will have a most successful reign as OPEC president if her achievements in the oil sector at home are anything to go by. Without any shade of doubts she is also transforming the critical oil sector by increasing local content and daily production to boost the economy. More importantly, the minister is working herself crazy in trying to get Nigerians to reap the maximum benefits of their status as oil producing nation through the Petroleum Industry Bill before the National Assembly. And more than any other petroleum minister before her in our country, Alison-Madueke is dealing with the issue of gas flaring with admirable courage and the missionary zeal it requires given the calibre and muscles of the multi-national oil companies moving to frustrate her policy on gas.
For all her tough and patriotic reforms in the oil industry, Alison-Madueke has gathered for herself a motley crowd of enemies whose toes she has stepped on in the national interest.

That is perhaps why she has also created another record of being the most invited minister at the National Assembly, sometimes over frivolous issues. Or maybe, in a lighter mood, the legislators are not the only ones who have taken notice of her beautiful and rolling eyeballs and have become captivated by them!

Politics / My Relationship With Fashola Is Intact – Bola Tinubu Writes by ahmed486: 1:19am On Dec 07, 2014
Below is a press statement from the office of former Lagos state governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu…

For a while now, I have noticed and read many published political stories on Lagos politics in particular and the personalities involved that are either concerted, unsubstantiated, pure conjectures or outright falsehood. In this instance, I reference a recent story ran by a major newspaper concerning my successor and me. There is no doubt political charlatans and enemies are at work fueling unnecessary rumour and insinuations and seeking to drive a wedge in an otherwise cordial and respectful political relationship. My relationship with Governor Fashola remains cordial both at the personal level and at the level of commitment to ensuring Lagos State remains on the path of political stability, growth and development.

Whether Governor Fashola had a specific candidate or not isn’t the issue here. What is important is to have a transparent process in the spirit of democracy to which we both subscribe. We often debate, agree or disagree. But when it comes to concluding on the interest of Lagos State, we are on the same page. The current situation and issues around the Lagos Gubernatorial primary are being overblown. What we have done is ensure that no one is denied his or her rights to participate and compete for any elective position. Such a disposition should not translate into anger and divisiveness of the party as it is being peddled. Conflicts and disagreements is part of every political process. The capacity to solve these conflicts in-house and not on the pages of newspaper is a tradition in Lagos.

We warn the people of Lagos state against speculative, self-serving stories aimed at destabilizing the party and its leadership. The media must be weary of accepting or publishing stories that seek to pursue a narrow political agenda. Rather, they should make their paper a platform for proper news dissemination and constructive analysis such that can help our country tackle the current security problem, create jobs.

While we appreciate, recognize and respect the right of every media house to publish any story, it is important not to be part of the feeding frenzy and not to mislead the unsuspecting public.

At my age and with my level of political experience, I am expected to seek for solutions, work for reconciliations and find a common ground where disagreements exist. That is what I have dedicated myself to in the larger interest of Lagos State and Nigeria at large. That is what Governor Babatunde Fashola and myself are about. That is what Lagos state deserves as Nigeria’s pacesetter in terms of democracy and development.

Politics / APC Primaries: El-rufai Accepts Victory With ‘gratitude And Humility’ by ahmed486: 3:26pm On Dec 06, 2014
Winner of the All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship primary and former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, has said the struggle for a better Kaduna state had just begun.

A statement issued by Mr. El-Rufai Friday in Kaduna read: “After months of hectic campaigning, our party, the APC, has made its choice regarding its candidate for the governorship of Kaduna State in the 2015 elections. It is a choice I accept with gratitude and humility.

“I salute all the elected executives at ward, local government and state levels, as well as statutory delegates who voted in our party primaries. I pay heartfelt tribute to the distinguished party men who also aspired for and campaigned to be chosen as the APC governorship candidate.

“Your energetic campaigns have helped to build and strengthen our party; and the party, its members and supporters would continue to expect your leadership and worthy contributions.

“It is now time to pull all our energies and talents together to elect an APC government in Kaduna State. This is a mission to fulfill the aspirations of the people, and a mighty task that duty demands we successfully achieve.

“I hereby invite the distinguished persons with whom we competed for the nomination to continue to discharge our responsibilities together, under the leadership of the party at the state level, to design and launch a statewide campaign as soon as possible.

“With your support, I pledge to run a campaign that engages and mobilizes all the people of Kaduna State for the necessary work of change, to throw out a spendthrift, ineffectual PDP gang and elect a government committed to participatory governance and sustainable empowerment of the people.

“The APC Kaduna Team is ready to provide a government guided by fairness, passion and commitment. I am proud to be a member of this team, and I will discharge my leadership role within it with the vision, integrity and results-orientation that have been the hallmark of my public service.

“We really do not have the time to exult in celebrating our choice as the APC Kaduna State governorship candidate. What has actually been decided is the team vested by the APC membership with the responsibility of realizing the hopes of our people for positive change; their desire for a Kaduna State whose governance is configured to converge with their expectations for a better life.

“This APC team must become Team Kaduna as we work hard across this state, to enthuse the people and to unite them in a common quest to enthrone good governance, human security and fairness.

“We take seriously our duty to work for a harmonious society where our people and their talents will thrive in peace, confident in the equality of their treatment as citizens by a government committed to social justice.

“We are ready to make Kaduna State great again. We have pondered how our dear state came to this dire condition. We have sweated on rescue options, discussed symptoms, diagnosis and solutions with various constituencies across the state. Based on these engagements, the APC Kaduna Team has already presented a draft manifesto.

“That document is by no means the end of the conversation; rather it helps to further structure the conversation around the most optimal policies and programmes. It is also a clear indication of the values that will guide an APC government in our state.

“Our programme is extensive, the challenge is huge but we are making the mental and political effort to be ready to effect coherent governance from the very first day in office”.

El-Rufai added that following consultations within the party, the APC Kaduna team will shortly announce the formal launch of its general election campaign.

“We have started a determined journey”, he said. “Together with all the peoples of Kaduna, we will work to make Kaduna State a better place. Let’s make Kaduna great again”.

Politics / ‘jonathan Overdue For Impeachment’ by ahmed486: 9:13pm On Dec 05, 2014
THE Senator representing Yobe North Senatorial zone, Ahmed Lawan, has emphasised the resolve of the Senate to impeach President Goodluck Jonathan.

Lawan noted that the “sins of Jonathan” were many and that his impeachment was “long overdue”.
He spoke to reporters in Damaturu at the affirmation of Governor Ibrahim Gaidam as the sole governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Yobe State.

The senator said it was unthinkable that some Nigerians thought the National Assembly wanted to impeach the president because of police invasion of the complex over Aminu Tambuwal.

He noted that one of Jonathan’s major impeachable offences was his inability to provide security and welfare for the citizenry.

Lawan was, however, silent on the 60 senators who allegedly signed Jonathan’s impeachment notice.

On the extension of the emergency rule, Lawan explained: “The request of Mr. President on the extension of the State of Emergency in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe had elapsed. So, it is as good as there is no request at all.

“Going by Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution, you can extend an emergency before its expiration date. Don’t forget, the emergency rule expired on November 20 and today is December 4.”

The senator praised the security agents for fighting the insurgents gallantly to secure Damaturu.

He noted that the endorsement of Gaidam wouldn’t have been possible, if the soldiers had not fought hard last Monday against Boko Haram insurgents, whom he said were determined to take over the town.

Politics / Nigerian Military Training Cancellation Baffles US Experts by ahmed486: 6:44pm On Dec 05, 2014
The U.S. Embassy is puzzled by Nigerian Military's cancellation of specialized training program being handled by American soldiers on fighting Boko Haram militants. A former U.S. ambassador says the move is surprising, since the military in Nigeria is obviously finding it difficult to defeat the terrorist group, which allegedly has taken control of parts of the country’s northeast.

Since April, U.S. Army soldiers have been training a battalion of about 600 Nigerian troops on how to take on Islamic extremist group Boko Haram. The Americans have also provided non-lethal equipment like vehicles and uniforms.
The acting defense and army attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, Lieutenant Colonel John Cantwell, told VOA he was not clear why the Nigerians decided to stop the training.

“No, we did not receive any specific reason as to why they wanted to cancel the training. But their notification was in response to a request that we had sent to them requesting their intention regarding moving forward with the third phase of training,” he said.

Boko Haram has scored numerous successes in its campaign to control and implement Sharia law across northeastern Nigeria - terrorizing the population, bombing, killing and kidnapping thousands of people, overrunning bases and seizing territory from Nigeria’s military.

That is why former U.S. ambassador to Nigeria John Campbell said Nigeria’s move to cut the training short was baffling.

“What on earth were the Nigerians thinking of to simply cancel a training program. And to me that is a complete mystery, because I do not see how it advances their own interests in any way,” he said.

Nigeria military spokesman Major General Chris Olukolade declined to be interviewed, but in a text message called the cancellation a “purely strategic action,” and did not explain further.

Nigeria’s military has battled Boko Haram for nearly five years and there have been numerous reports of soldiers being outgunned by the militants or simply running away.

Nigerian troops played vital roles in peacekeeping missions in Liberia and Sierra Leone during those countries' wars. But Campbell said since a 1990 coup attempt against then-military ruler General Ibrahim Babangida, recent civilian administrations have preferred to keep the military weak.

“In other words, how do you reduce the coup-making potential of the military? Well, what you do is starve it for resources. So I think that accounts, in part at least, for the transformation of the Nigerian military from being, by far, the best in Africa to one which now, if news reports are to be credited, regularly runs from firefights with Boko Haram,” he said.

Nigeria’s ambassador to the United States recently laid the blame for the military’s failures on Washington. In a speech last month, he criticized the United States for not providing Abuja with more weapons support.

But Campbell said U.S. hands were tied by federal law. International rights groups have repeatedly criticized Nigeria’s military for killing and torturing civilians, charges the Nigerian ambassador dismissed in his speech.

Meanwhile, a law known as the Leahy amendment prohibits the United States from supporting militaries that are thought to be involved in human rights violations.

“American military training of Nigerians, at this particular point in time, is inherently highly limited. It is limited by the Leahy amendment, amongst other things. Nevertheless, it made no sense to me at all that the Nigerian side, would terminate a training program,” said Campbell.

U.S. Officials said they would continue other training with the Nigerian military

Politics / Health Workers Strike Flops, Fails To Paralyze Hospitals by ahmed486: 6:35pm On Dec 05, 2014
The one month old strike embarked by the members of Joint Health Staff Unions (JOHESU) may have failed to achieve its aim of paralyzing public hospitals following strenuous efforts by medical doctors to keep the health institutions functioning to the relief of patients.

At the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia, the Accident/Emergency unit was a bubbling with activities as doctors were busy attending to the patients while the striking nurses, pharmacists and laboratory scientists were substituted with contract staffers.

Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Umuahia zone, Dr Ezekiel Ojimadu told journalists Thursday that the strike by health workers was “uncalled for and mischievous” given that their demands are hinged on frivolities.

He said that NMA was encouraging its members whenever they are to keep the hospitals running as “we are not on strike and we have to maintain full scale service” to ensure that patients there was no reason patients should not be given adequate attention.
