stupid post what has Ntel done to you, stop trying to kill that business

I am not trying to kill any business. they are the ones that broke their promise to their customers.

Mind you I have been using Ntel since 2016 that they came out.
when their unlimited was 12500 then they increased to 17,500 and then 18,500.
I never complained but introducing a data cap is the height of it for me.

How confirmed is this new policy on an unlimited service? I ask this and displaying both my daily and weekly NTEL unlimited data usage, presently.
The network service and speed seem area dependent in Abuja, I should add.

Their representative on Facebook confirmed this I will attach their reply below
Dear ---, kindly be informed that the new Unlimited plans (The unlimited Plus, Xtra and Prime) are designed for heavy users and SMEs. This is in a bid to cater for data-intensive activities like file sharing, torrents, video and game streaming, video conferencing etc. The new plans also have more threshold namely, 200GB for Plus, 350GB for Xtra and 600GB for Prime as opposed to the Family that have 150GB FUP limit monthly.
Live. More.

So from the info the new data cap is 150GB

Ntel downfall has really started. Their unlimited is no longer unlimited they have added a data cap.

Their network has gotten really bad. clocking at best 150Kb/s at Secretariat where my office is in Abuja
They increased their unlimited plan to N18,500
And to cap it all, I just found out that they have introduced a data cap of 100GB

With all these, This will be my last month of subscribing to the network.

I would rather pay 20K for 138GB of Glo which clocks over 5MB/s in my location. Pending when a true unlimited network comes out.

Politics / 5 Things Hindering Your Happiness by ahmed486: 3:24pm On Dec 20, 2016

We have been focusing on the topic of happiness this month; especially because we are in a season when people are supposed to be happy, reflective and appreciative of both their lives and the lives of those around them with whom they have special relationships.

But we don’t always have to wait for such seasons to come around, before we are happy. That would mean allowing external circumstances determine our happiness; negating the premise of these our discussions that our own happiness is within our own control.Last week, I promised to give you practical tips to help you be and stay happy. That is what I intend to do in this article by showing you things, which you’re most likely doing, that are taking away from your happiness. I believe that in order to adopt positive habits, you have to be aware of and get rid of the negative ones first.

Here are five activities that we sometimes take pride engaging in, but are in fact hindering our true happiness:

Multi-tasking
Many people take pride in multi-tasking. In fact, it is a “skill” that has found its way into the CV of the average job seeker. The ability to do more than one –to several –tasks at once. It seems very efficient but there is a serious problem with it. You do not get to enjoy any one thing, since you are doing so many at once. And that doesn’t help you to “live in the moment”.

Compare chatting with five different friends simultaneously on Whatsapp to chatting with only one friend at a time and paying all your attention to that one chat. Which do you tend to enjoy more? How about taking it further and having a live phone (voice) conversation with that one friend. Does that not sound more enjoyable?

Babies and toddlers are generally happier than adults are. One reason for this is that they enjoy whatever activity they might be engaged in at any moment. They tend to focus on only one thing at a time. They don’t build sand castles while talking with their friends on the phone, or ride the merry-go-round while texting.

It is also a success principle. Focus. Most successful people became so by focusing on one thing and doing it over and over until they became successful at it. Only after that do they diversify. Multi-tasking does not allow you to live in the now; to enjoy the moment; to be happy! It splits your mind into so many fragments that it becomes impossible to dwell on and enjoy any one thing.

Fitting In
It is important to distinguish between short-term and long-term happiness. Short-term happiness is fleeting and is sought for in temporary things like acquiring the latest car, money, a big house or the “right friends”.

Peer pressure does not stop at adolescence. It follows us throughout our lives. Many of us just want to fit into some clique of friends that would make us look good on the outside. Meanwhile, on the inside, we are compromising on many of our values. We are being kicked around by those people and made to do things that we are sometimes not comfortable doing. But we carry on hanging out with them because of the validation we seek. Some people even go into debt just to keep up such appearances.

This does not bring lasting happiness. Their happiness lasts for one day –the day they are accepted into that clique, after which their misery begins.

The key to long-term happiness is to strive not to be ‘liked’ but to be respected. Live your life through your own values and not to please others. That way, whatever group of friends you end up having would be those that are attracted to you because of the values you hold dear, and because theirs are similar. Having friends with shared values as yours ensures that you don’t just fit in, but you belong. And ‘belongingness’ is long lasting!

#

Some people may take the previous point to the extreme by deciding that they don’t ‘belong’ anywhere and don’t want to compromise on their values by fitting in. So they decide to be their own friends. They stop extending themselves out to meet people and keep to themselves, claiming to be introverts. I’m borderline this way.

The problem is that this attitude could lead to loneliness, which is such an unhappy place to be. We need other people. We need to keep on growing our association as it is out of all those acquaintances that our true friends –those who share our values –are discovered.

No one ever went insane from being in the company of many friends. But many have gone insane from having no one to relate with. Humans do not do very well alone. “The more, the merrier!” So stay connected to more people and watch your happiness grow!

Ignoring Your Passion
It is no secret that most people are currently not doing the things that they are genuinely passionate about. They are busy trying to fit in at some job, compromising on their values, and carrying out some mundane tasks.

One of my favourite things to do is to talk with entrepreneurs. I have a couple of them as friends, so I get on the phone with some of them from time to time. I am always infected with the passion they exude in our conversations. They always sound so pumped! This is because they are doing what they are passionate about –even when it’s not yielding all the profit in the world yet. They just enjoy having to pursue what they have always wanted to do, and this gives them immense happiness.

We may not all become entrepreneurs but it is very important to do what you’re passionate about. Answer these important questions in one of my articles (here) and discover your passion. Then begin to do some of the things you love, even on the side of your ‘mundane’ job.

Complaining and Worrying
This is the surest path to unhappiness. It is much easier to complain and blame someone or something else for our circumstances, than it is to take personal responsibility and make necessary changes.

Complaining leaves us in a negative place. It leaves us in a place of worry. We may think that we have ranted and vented and should feel better, but that’s never the case. Deep down, we know we have done nothing to solve the problem. All we have done is complain. So, we worry about what the future holds.

Taking responsibility and actually identifying things you can control and things you can’t, is a much better response. This way, you learn not to complain about things you cannot change, and focus on those you can. The result is peace of mind because you know that you are doing something about your problem.

An even better response would be to express gratitude instead, even for the little things. Just like the little assignment I gave you last week. Imagine if you woke up tomorrow with only the things you were thankful for today? How much would you have left?

Also, since complaining and worrying often go hand-in-hand, we should learn to plan ahead by engaging in activities such as budgeting, saving, and studying during the semester rather than postponing it until exam time; so as not to be caught in a place where we are so unsure that we begin to worry about the future.

Happiness is not far-fetched. You just have to move to the ‘driver’s seat’ of your own choices today. Exercise gratitude for the things you have, and do the things you love with the people you love. And remember to enjoy those tasks and activities one at a time.

Politics / Taraba Killings: Death Toll Hits 42 by ahmed486: 3:12pm On Dec 20, 2016

The death toll in weekend’s Tiv farmers’ killings in Taraba State has risen to 42, it was learnt yesterday.

The hacking to death of the farmers by suspected Fulani militia in Gassol Local Government Area has spilled to many Tiv villages, in spite of police and military presence in the area. The meeting by Commissioner of Police Yunas Babas, State President of Tiv Cultural and Social Association (TCSA) Goodman Dahida, President of Fulani’s Miyati-Alla, the Lamdo Gassol and security agencies to broker peace was fruitless

Police, soldiers, Dahida and the Senior Special Assistant to Taraba State Governor, Hon. Jerry Tyolanga, confirmed the rise in death toll.

Tiv homes were set ablaze, with smokes still billowing when n visited the troubled area yesterday afternoon.

Six persons were gunned down in Sabon Gari; 16 were slain in other villages. Among them were three women, eye-witnesses said.

Four trucks conveyed bodies, which were killed. The bodies recovered from the “bush villages”. They were being taken to neighbouring Benue State.

There was mass exodus of Tiv from Dan-Anacha –fleeing Taraba to Benue State where a bulk of their ethnic group resides.

The displaced persons looked frustrated, most of them carrying heavy loads, children and domesticated animals but without transportation fares. Some were loudly crying and wailing over the loss of their loved ones.

The renewed attack and killings of Tiv farmers began on Saturday in Dan-Anacha, whose name was recently changed to Kwararafa, as the state was busy at a “Peace Concert” in a stadium in Jalingo –the state capital – organised by Governor Darius Ishaku.

Police spokesman David Mishal, who confirmed the killings, was still being expected to brief the press on the details yesterday.

He described the incident as “undercover attacks where you invade someone’s home and attack him when there is no war going on”.

Governor Darius Ishaku is seen by the Tiv in Taraba as a peace maker. They held a meeting in Jalingo yesterday on the killings, which are raising national concerns.

The Tiv community alleged that yesterday’s killings followed a meeting between the Lamdo Gassol and the Fulani militias. “The meeting started by midnight and lasted till 4:00am when the militias began to invade Tiv homes,” one of the displaced farmers, who is injured, said.

Politics / Police Accuse Ogun Pastor Of Selling 64 Babies by ahmed486: 2:50pm On Dec 20, 2016

A pastor at the Divine Yard Deliverance Ministry in Iyana Iyesi, Ota, Ogun State, Peace Udoh, has been arrested by the police for allegedly running a baby factory in the church.

The 47-year-old was said to have sold 64 babies before she was arrested on Sunday by operatives from the Lagos State Police Command who acted on a tip-off.Udoh was apprehended with one Angela Akpan and a nurse, Mrs. Bukola Ajala, who reportedly assisted in childbirth at Udoh’s church.

It was learnt that the pastor usually referred complicated cases to the nurse, whose clinic – El Shaddai Hospital – is located a few metres away from the church.

It was gathered that Angela’s younger sister, 17-year-old Goodnews Akpan, recently gave birth to a child at the clinic.

Angela, who was arrested on Saturday in the Sango area, was said to have led police operatives on Sunday to Udoh’s church and Ajala’s clinic, where they were picked up respectively.

While parading the suspects on Monday at the Lagos State Police Command headquarters in Ikeja, the Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, said detectives swooped on the syndicate after receiving intelligence report that Udoh needed a buyer for Goodnews’ baby.

“The suspects run a baby factory in the Sango Ota area. We are still working to get 64 other children she has sold out,” the CP added.

However, the pastor, who hails from Akwa Ibom State, refuted the allegation, saying she used the church as a maternity home to assist her pregnant church members for a token.

She said, “I have been a pastor for 13 years. I only assisted my church members during childbirth. I take delivery of 13 to 15 babies every year and I have handled over 60 cases so far. I don’t sell the babies.

“Whenever I have a complicated case, I refer the patient to the nurse and we share the money she collects for the service. Angela brought her sister to me in July. She gave birth on November 16 at the nurse’s clinic and she was discharged. I was surprised when the police came to arrest me yesterday (Sunday).”

Ajala, the nurse, said she collected between N15,000 and N17,000 for each child delivery, adding that she didn’t know anything about selling of babies.

The third suspect, Angela, said, “I am from Abak in Akwa Ibom. I took my sister from our village to the pastor when her pregnancy was four months. She was there until she gave birth in November and I paid N17,000. I didn’t intend to sell her child and I have never sold any child before.”

Goodnews, a secondary school dropout, told our correspondent that she was not aware of the plan to sell her baby. She said she followed Angela to Lagos to avoid being ridiculed in the village.

“I got pregnant in the school but none of my boyfriends was willing to take the responsibility for the pregnancy.

“My mother would not allow me stay with her so I decided to follow my sister to Lagos,” she added.

Politics / I Will Not Abandon PDP – Ebonyi Governor by ahmed486: 3:24pm On Dec 19, 2016

Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, has pledged not to abandon the Peoples Democratic Party in spite of the crisis currently rocking the party at the national level.

Umahi made the pledge on Sunday during a Christmas ‘Get-Together’ he organised for the State Working Committee of the PDP including its local and zonal committee members.\The governor spoke against the backdrop of fears in the state that he would soon dump the party due to the crisis and to secure his second-term bid.

According to him, the current challenges confronting the party will not lead to its demise as it will soon fizzle out with the commitment of its dedicated members.

“Anybody who believes that I would leave PDP for the All Progressives Congress or any other party is sleeping and should be woken from sleep.

“APC and other parties cannot win election in this state because PDP has performed marvelously and cannot be arm-twisted,’’ he said.

Politics / Zahra’s Wedding: FG Not Paying For Food, Other Expenses – Buhari Tells Nigerians by ahmed486: 4:41pm On Dec 16, 2016

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that the Federal Government is not spending any money on the wedding ceremony of his daughter, Zahra, slated for Friday in Abuja.

The president’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, stated this in his Facebook page on Thursday.Shehu maintained that all the wedding expenses including the printing and distribution of invitation cards, souvenirs, lunch event for the men and dinner for the women as well as other miscellaneous expenses would be financed by the family and personal aides.

He said the president has said that even though the family wants to make Zahra happy on her wedding day, she will not enjoy “royal wedding”.

He said, “Zahra Muhammadu Buhari’s wedding to Ahmed Mohammed Indimi starting today is a celebrity event to savour any day. Much as the family wants to make their daughter happy they, however, will not make it a royal wedding.

“The President’s family is trying hard to keep it as simple as possible. Wedding Lalle, Fatiha, lunch event for the men and dinner for the women who must have come from far and near and the bride heads to her husband!

“In a twist from what was a norm among past leaders, the President asked to be given the bill for the food at the banquet. Government, he said, has no business paying for that.

“This should be treated as private. His family and personal aides put the money together to foot the bill. No government money in invitation cards, souvenirs or Aso-Ebi. That’s essential Buhari for you!!.”

The Wedding Fatiha will be conducted at the National Mosque, Abuja, on Friday, while reception for guest will be held at the Presidential Banquet Hall.

Politics / Senate Wants Public Officers To Operate Foreign Accounts by ahmed486: 1:03pm On Dec 15, 2016

A bill seeking to alter the constitution to allow public officers own and operate foreign bank accounts is currently being considered by the Senate.

The Senate Bill number 347 was sponsored by Senator Solomon Olamilekan .Entitled, “An Act to Alter The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 To Permit Public Officers to Maintain or Operate a Bank Account In Any Country Outside Nigeria; And For Related Matters,” the bill seeks to alter a part of the fifth schedule of the constitution.

In an explanatory memorandum attached to it, the sponsor of the bill said, “This bill seeks to alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, in order to delete the provision in the Code of Conduct for public officers which forbids them from operating a bank account in a bank outside Nigeria.

“This is owing to the fact that the prohibition does no accord with the current realities where the world has become a global village, where illicit funds could easily be tracked.”

Specifically, the bill seeks to alter Part 1 of the Fifth Schedule of the Constitution on the Code of Conduct of Public Officers by deleting paragraph 3.

Reacting to this development, the Executive Director of the Civil Societies Legislative and Advocacy Centre, Auwual Musa-Rafsanjani, said the bill in question was self serving.

He said, “I don’t know if our present crops of legislators are in the National Assembly to serve themselves or to serve Nigerians. Are these the kind of bills they should be dissipating their energy on at this time of economic emergency?

“I think Nigerians have a duty to rise up and let these people know that there is hunger in the land and that what we expect are practical solutions to our economic challenges.”

Olamilekan has also sponsored another bill in which he is seeking to alter the constitution to allow lawmakers to share powers with the President on the issue of removing of non-performing ministers from office.

The Bill is entitled: “An Act to Amend The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 To Provide For The Consent Of the Senate/State House of Assembly For the Removal Of A Minister Of the Government of the Federation/ Commissioner Of the Government Of A State.”

The bill seeks to alter Section 147 of the Principal Act by inserting a new subsection (4).

If passed into law, Section 4 will then read: “Any person appointed to the office of Minister of the Government of the Federation may be removed from such office (by) the President for inability to discharge the functions of the office in question (whether arising from infirmity of mind or body) or for misconduct or for contravention of any Act of the Federation: Provided that the Senate concurs with such removal by a unanimous vote.”

The President currently reserves the right to fire ministers as he deems fit without recourse to the National Assembly.

Politics / “the Senate Is Talking Nonsense” – Buhari’s Secretary Reacts To Calls For His Re by ahmed486: 12:47pm On Dec 15, 2016

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal on Wednesday said that Nigerian Senate erred by linking him to the alleged diversion of the N127 billion meant for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the Northeast.

He said the upper chamber was talking nonsense for accusing him of contract inflation and abuse of office. His statement reads in part: “The Senate is talking balderdash; it has developed the habit of the ‘bring him down syndrome’. Nigerians have decided that we should destroy our best; we should all destroy the promising and best among us by bringing people down without a cause. This is just how I saw it.

“I have the report of the Senate Committee in which it was said that I didn’t resign from Rholavision Nigeria Limited. Let me tell you, Rholavision was formed by me in December 1990, and it has been a company that was run very successfully.

“Now, when I was appointed Secretary to the Government of the Federation, I resigned from that company on 18th August 2015. I can see that in their report, they are talking about 2016. I don’t know where they got their facts.

“By the way, it is very instructive that when the committee was sitting, no effort was ever made to invite me to come and make a submission. It is therefore, surprising that they devoted a whole session of today (yesterday) at maligning me, claiming what is not true without even giving me the chance to come and put my own case before them.”

Nigerian Senators on Wednesday demanded immediate resignation of Secretary General of the Federation, Babachir Lawal over allegations of corruption in disbursements of Northeast funds.

Politics / We Have Reasons By Pst. Olufo O. Olufo by ahmed486: 8:42pm On Dec 14, 2016

At the end of every year it has become the norms and culture of Christians and other faith alike to gather and give thanks to God for several reasons. For some it’s for provisions, protection, guidance – generally for His blessings upon them.

For us in THIS WORSHIP HOUSE, our case is liken to the story of a young boy who went out to play hide and seek game with his friends in an incomplete two story building which he is not familiar with the route. It got to a point that all his friends left him alone on the last floor not knowing how to find his way down and home. In his desperate search for a way out, missed his step closed to an uncovered exit and fell from the second floor to the ground; while falling a neighbor saw him falling and ran to the mother crying and when the whole neighborhood came running towards him shouting and crying, they saw him standing on the ground unhurt and the mother asked him what happened, he said “He carried me up and kept me on the ground” – who was that the mother asked? he said one man that I don’t know. But in our case, we know the man that carried us from the last 16 months of the existence of our ministry till now – His name is Jesus Christ. Our substance or reason is not based on cars that goes out of fashion nor house that lose value with time but based on the followings:
(1) We do not belong to PDP, APC, Democratic nor Republican Party in America not even the economic team of Nigeria but we belongs to GOD and for that we are overcomers and the greater one lives in us – Glory be to God. (1 John 4:4)

(2) He delivered us from this present evil age! Wow! What a great thing to know. When you talk about evil, we are always one sided with the thought of what people might do to us. For use its on the fact that, some of us in the ministry came close to making certain decision that could have ended our marriages, jobs, contracts, connections and so many but His deliverance prevented us even in the face of heavy anger and temptations from taking actions based on temporary gains- all thanks to God and the father of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Gal. 1:3-4)

(3) His love for us has no end and is it not so awesome to know that nothing can separate from that love? – glory. (Rom. 8:37-39)

Beloved, if you are thanking God for house, new car, latest iPhone, latest bags or fat bank accounts then what will happen when after six month another version of your phone or car is in town? Am not saying is bad to thank for your possessions – no no. But thank Him for things that will never fade nor go out of fashion beloved. Thank Him for we are now in the Kingdom of his His son Jesus (Col. 1:12-13)

Please join us this Sunday 18th December, 2016 @ THIS WORSHIP HOUSE, Multipurpose Hall, KaruCourt Estate close the Police Station Abacha Road, Mararaba by 9:00am with Rev. OT JACOBS all the way from God’s own state Abia ministering live.

Politics / NSCIA Rejects Christian Court, Says Its Recipe For Anarchy by ahmed486: 4:08pm On Dec 12, 2016

The Bill for Ecclesiastical (Christian) Courts in Nigeria is a recipe for anarchy and should be stopped in the interest of the nation, the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, has warned.

The organisation also threatened that it would demand that Wednesday should be declared a work-free day in Nigeria, if Christians continue to insist on ecclesiastical courts. The Secretary-General of NSCIA and Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, sounded that warning in an interview with Punch newspaper

He said no informed Christian would agitate for Christian courts because Muslims had Shariah courts.

The proposed bill for a Christian Court sponsored by Hon. Gyang Dung (PDP) from Plateau State and eight other members of the House of Representatives had scaled the second reading.

According to Dung, while presenting the bill during plenary said the courts would complement the regular courts especially with matters relating to the tenets of the Christian faith, when established.

He, however, stated that it adjudicate in cases between individuals and groups that yield and submit to its jurisdiction.

But Oloyede said the demand for Christian courts amounted to the height of intolerance because Christians enjoyed Sunday as Sabbath Day while the cross was the sign of the hospital “and yet Muslims are not complaining.”

He said, “Why not? Let them (Christians) have it (Christian courts); I believe that Muslims will also have Wednesday as a work-free day. To me, the demand for Christian courts is not in the interest of the nation. I believe that if because somebody has something, then another person must have it, then Muslims can also ask for Wednesday and not Sunday as a public holiday. If you hate Muslims because they have Shariah courts, then they can also hate you because you have Sunday and there will be no end to it.

“People can also demand that they don’t want a Sabbath Day; Muslims don’t have Sabbath Day because they believe that it is Christianity that believes in Sabbath Day and that is why they conceded to Saturday and Sunday.”

If Christians say whatever Muslims want, they will be antagonistic to it, then what it means is that Muslims can stand up and say they don’t want Saturday and Sunday, they want Wednesday as work-free day.

“I think it is an act of intolerance, what has brought this country together is that our forefathers have been very considerate and sensitive. But we now have some hit-headed people who think that others are fools. But I think those people should be cautioned, not to create a situation that will lead to anarchy.

“If you say because they have Shariah court, you also want Christian courts, Muslims also have the right to say they don’t want Saturday and Sunday, they want Wednesday as Sabbath Day. So when you concede one thing to one group, the group will concede another.

“Our forefathers are not fools; the Christians among them were more Christians than modern-day Christians. The Muslims among them were more Muslims than the modern-day Muslims. Yet, they agree on the principle of give and take and that is why the nation is where it is today.

“If you start this intolerance, at the end of the day, every group will discover that it does not pay and is not in their own interest to create such a situation. I am a Muslim and I have no apology for being a Muslim. But I believe that any informed Christian will not go that way. But if they go that way, Muslims also have the right to demand for all the things which they also believe that are Christian vestiges. If you go to any government hospital, the cross is a sign of the hospital in Nigeria and we are not complaining.

“Even in Sokoto (the seat of the caliphate), the cross is the sign of the hospital and Muslims are not complaining because it is not give and take. But by the time we start to exhibit such intolerance, other people will have the right to make their own demands and that will take the country to nowhere.”

President Enrique Pena Nieto, who inherited the drug war when he took office in December 2012, has promised a "Mexico in peace."

Ten years after Mexican troops were unleashed against drug cartels, the country will mark the anniversary without fanfare on Sunday, with murders rising again and the military eager to return to barracks.
President Enrique Pena Nieto, who inherited the drug war when he took office in December 2012, has promised his countrymen and women a “Mexico in peace.”

His government has created a new federal police force and imprisoned or killed several drug kingpins, but Pena Nieto has kept troops on the ground despite allegations of abuses and criticism from human rights groups.

The administration has no events planned to commemorate the controversial deployment that was launched by his predecessor, Felipe Calderon, on December 11, 2006.

Ten days after taking office, Calderon deployed some 5,000 troops to his western home state of Michoacan — the start of a militarized campaign against drug trafficking.

Calderon’s six-year term was marked by a surge in murders, rising from 10,253 in 2007 to a peak of 22,852 in 2011.

The figure dropped in the first two years of Pena Nieto’s presidency, only to rise again in 2015.

Although murders remain well under the worst years of Calderon’s presidency, there were 17,063 homicides in the first 10 months of 2016, already surpassing last year’s 12-month total of 17,034.

Much of the bloodshed is blamed on ultra-violent turf wars between drug gangs.

The government has captured major fugitives, such as the Sinaloa drug cartel’s powerful leader, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

But the weakening of major drug cartels such as the Beltran Leyva, Zetas, Gulf and Knights Templar has led to the emergence of smaller gangs that seek to diversify their business through kidnappings and extortion.

“The war has become much more complex. The level of death has escalated,” Raul Benitez Manaut, a security expert at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, told AFP.

The drug cartels have terrorized the population by leaving the decapitated bodies of their rivals on roadsides or hanging them on bridges, while mass graves are regularly found in the countryside.

Police have been accused of colluding with criminals while soldiers and marines have faced allegations of committing torture, extrajudicial killings and sexual abuse.

Even Defense Minister Salvador Cienfuegos agrees that troops do not belong in a law enforcement role.

“We didn’t ask to be here. We don’t like it. We didn’t study how to chase criminals,” Cienfuegos said on Thursday.

He said he would be the first to raise “not one, but two hands” in favor of returning troops to barracks.

“Our function is something else and it’s been made into something unnatural. We are doing things that don’t correspond to our training because there’s no one else to do them,” the minister said.

Though Pena Nieto acknowledged on Friday that the armed forces were doing tasks that “don’t correspond to them in the strictest sense,” he insisted that they are “determined to continue” policing the streets.

Grim cases

But Javier Oliva, a Mexican security expert at the London School of Economics, said “there is no strategy” and the troops are always one step behind.

Drug consumption in the United States, meanwhile, has not ceased and the legalization of marijuana in several US states has prompted drug cartels to step up production of heroin while synthetic drugs proliferate.

In Mexico, civilians have paid a heavy price for the international drug trade.

In 2010, 72 Latin American migrants were slaughtered by the Zetas drug cartel in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas after they refused to be recruited by the gang.

In 2014, 43 students were abducted by corrupt police in the southern opium poppy-producing state of Guerrero.

Authorities initially said the officers handed the students to the Guerreros Unidos drug cartel, which killed them, but independent experts have questioned that conclusion, leaving the mysterious case open.

The 43 young men have become a symbol of the 28,000 people who have vanished in Mexico in the past decade.

Rusty monument

“The stories are terrible. We no longer know where the state starts and crime ends,” said Javier Sicilia, a poet-turned-activist who founded the Movement for Peace and Justice after his son was murdered in 2011.

Sicilia, who led peace caravans across Mexico and the United States, has lost faith in the government.

“We want them to step aside,” he said. “There’s nothing to ask to the state. It must be changed, refounded,” he said.

A monument was built in Mexico City in honor of the victims of violence — a series of rusted metal slabs featuring quotes from famous writers.

“It’s an insult to the victims,” Sicilia said. “It’s the monument to the common grave. There are no names, no stories.”

Politics / Fg’s Silence On Zaria Killings Worrisome – Odinkalu by ahmed486: 6:41pm On Nov 28, 2016

Foremost Human Rights Activist and former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, at the weekend said he was deeply worried by the silence of the Federal Government over the killing of about 347 people in Zaria, Kaduna state by the military.

Odinkalu said he was concerned that mass killings of Nigerian citizens could happen under a democratically elected government in Zaria without anybody being held accountable till date. The former NHRC chair said this at a fund raising dinner organized by Federal Government Girls Colleges (FGGC), Onitsha Alumnae Association, Abuja Chapter.

Odinkalu, who is also the President-General of the Unity Schools Old Students Association (USOSA), added that people who were killed in Zaria could be more than that.

He also said the continued detention of Shiite leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky by the federal government without been charged to court was a violation of his human rights.

Odinkalu said: “I think everybody is worried not just me. I think many more people than me are very worried about this situation and justifiably so. A democratically elected government cannot afford to bury 347, by its own admission, of its own citizens in mass graves and believe it is alright nobody should be held to account.

“The situation in Kaduna has been troubling. My view has been fairly strong in Kaduna, in Zaria particularly. I think the government could have handled it better. I think the brutality has been wanton.

“In all likelihood, the people who were killed are many more than that. A lot of people still reported still disappeared. The number of casualties in Zaria has not been established. The security agencies did not quite collaborate or corporate with the commission of inquiry that was set up by the Kaduna state government and the Federal Government has been quite mute about that.

“Ibrahim El-Zakzaky has been held for nearly one year without charges in a democratically elected government under a constitution that says personal liberty should not be breached for more than 48 hours without been charged to court. There is no excuse for what happened in Zaria for the way that has been managed. Not under this dispensation.”

He said the absence of a Governing Council for the NHRC had begun to impugn on the credibility of the commission.

Prof. Odinkalu therefore called for an immediate reconstitution of the governing council of the commission to enable the NHRC carry out its functions.

“The absence of a governing council is beginning to endanger the credibility of the commission because there are decisions that staffs cannot take. There are decisions that an executive secretary cannot take.

“You need a governing council statutorily to take several decisions of any moment within the commission and when that fails the commission is at risk of losing its international certification and when it loses its international certification then of course Nigeria’s Human Rights Commission is no longer credible,” he added.

Politics / Kaduna Killings: Cows Not More Valuable Than Human Lives – Jagaba by ahmed486: 11:15am On Nov 19, 2016

A member of the National Assembly, representing Kagarko/ Kachia Federal constituency, Hon Jagaba Adams Jagaba, has called on both the state and the federal government to step up actions towards ending the killings in the Southern Kaduna part of Kaduna State.

Speaking at a Channels Television Live programme, ‘State of the Nation,’ on the recent killing of 46 people in Kauru LGA of Kaduna state, Jagaba, called on the government to end the killings just the way it tackled cattle rustling.

“Cows cannot be better than human lives. There is failure of government from top to bottom in tackling the killings in Southern Kaduna. The area is more than many states of the federation but their is no federal presence,” Jagaba said.

“If something happens in the northern part of the state, government will act fast. But when it happens in Southern Kaduna, the government turns its eyes the other way. The government must act fast to tame these killings if it does not want the people of the area to be living in fears. Cows cannot be better than human lives,” Jagaba added.

Foreign Affairs / Political Calculation: The Math Behind The US Election by ahmed486: 4:57pm On Oct 29, 2016

Winning a US presidential election takes years, billions of dollars and relentless determination. It also requires crunching a lot of numbers.

The victor must get to the magic number of 270 electoral college votes — but just trying to anticipate the result is a complicated exercise in adding, subtracting and combining. That’s because the US election — taking place on November 8 — is not an exercise in direct democracy where a nationwide popular vote determines the result through a simple majority.

Candidates must instead win a majority of the electoral college votes assigned to the 50 states.

Those who win a state’s popular vote are apportioned the state’s electors, the number of which is roughly in line to the size of its population.

Except in Maine and Nebraska — which distribute electors through proportional systems — candidates earn electoral votes on a winner-take-all basis.

With a population of 38.8 million, California has 55 electoral votes, while Montana — population one million — has only three.

A total of 538 electoral votes are in play, corresponding to the total number of elected representatives in Congress (435 members of the House and 100 senators) plus three for the US capital Washington, DC.

Technically, it is those electors who elect the president and vice president in a formal rubber stamp vote on December 19.

– Road to 270 –

To win the keys to the White House, candidates need a simple majority of electoral votes — 270.

And if history is any indicator, the path is far clearer for the Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton than for her Republican rival Donald Trump.

That’s because 18 states — providing a total of 242 electoral votes — have consistently voted for Democrats since 1992.

Another 13 states have picked Republicans over the same period, but they weigh in with only 102 votes.

Six more states appear to be firmly in Trump’s camp despite their votes shifting in the past.

The outcome in the remaining dozen “swing states” is more uncertain, and that’s where Clinton and Trump are focusing almost all their campaigning.

The more electors a state has, the more crucial its role, led by Florida with 29 electoral votes, Pennsylvania with 20 and Ohio with 18 — places the candidates continually visit.

Potentially, candidates could also forge a path to 270 by winning enough small states such as Nevada, Iowa and New Hampshire — or by winning a state that’s historically voted for the opposing camp.

The experts are taking all those factors into account as they explore multiple possible combinations — adding Ohio, subtracting Iowa, flipping a Democratic state here or a Republican one there.

Despite all the variations, many believe Florida — the mother of swing states — is the key to the election.

Without it, winning will be “very difficult” for Trump, his campaign manager Kellyanne Conway has admitted.

Here’s a list of the major swing states, the number of electoral votes and the averages of recent polls through October 28 in a four-way race — including the outsiders, Libertarian Gary Johnson and Green candidate Jill Stein.

Florida: 29 electoral votes

Clinton has 44.7 percent support, Trump 44 percent

Pennsylvania: 20 electoral votes

Clinton at 46.3 percent, Trump at 41.3 percent

Ohio: 18 electoral votes

Trump at 44.8 percent, Clinton at 43.7 percent

Georgia: 16 electoral votes

Trump at 46.3 percent, Clinton at 43.5 percent

North Carolina: 15 electoral votes

Clinton at 45.8 percent, Trump at 43.8 percent

Virginia: 13 electoral votes

Clinton at 46 percent, Trump at 38.8 percent

Arizona: 11 electoral votes

Clinton at 43.5 percent, Trump at 42 percent

Colorado: Nine electoral votes

Clinton at 44.6 percent, Trump at 38.4 percent

Iowa: Six electoral votes

Trump at 41.7 percent, Clinton at 40.3 percent

Nevada: Six electoral votes

Clinton 45.3 percent, Trump 43.3 percent

New Hampshire: Four electoral votes

Clinton 44.5 percent, Trump 38 percent

Utah is also proving interesting despite having voted Republican since 1968. Forty-year-old independent Evan McMullin, a Mormon and former CIA officer who entered the race in August, is running close on Trump’s heels.

Health / No Hospital In The Country Has A Functional Machine To Treat Cancer – Health Min by ahmed486: 4:47pm On Oct 29, 2016

Isaac Adewole, minister of health, says the there is no hospital in the country that has a functional cancer treating machine.

Adewole made the shocking discovery in an interview with NAN.
He disclosed that out of the 200 which Nigeria requires, only seven were available, but none is in order.

“As we are talking today, there is no public hospital in Nigeria that has cancer treatment machine that is working,” he said.

“Ideally, we need one machine per one million people. Going by that, Nigeria should have about 200 cancer treatment machines. We have seven, but none of the seven machines is working today.

“But in the 2017 budget, we will ensure that each of the seven centres has two machines which means one will be a backup.

“We will upgrade Maiduguri, Zaria, Ilorin, the National Hospital, Abuja, Ibadan, Benin and Enugu in the first phase.

“We are likely to get a private sector organisation to help with the National Hospital; in fact we may sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) this month.

“If we take National Hospital out, we will go to Sokoto. Gombe is waiting. Jos will be in the second round. I got a grant some years back to set up six centres of excellence.

“I put one in Jos, and I can tell you that Jos is one of the best. They have done better than Ibadan. The government is committed to making sure that we have the facilities to handle cancer cases.”

He said government had developed special interest in breast and cervical, which has been ravaging Nigerians.

Adewole revealed that a national cancer plan by a committee that would be chaired by him would review the issue of facilities.

He also emphasised the importance of early detention in the treatment of cancer.

“Due to my interest in cancer, the cancer burden is of concern to me,” he said.

The first thing we want to do is to revise the National Cancer Plan. We are also setting up a steering committee, which I will also chair.

“I agree cancer is a major problem and it is increasing. As people grow older, more people will have cancer, because those cell divisions that take place in our system grow abnormal.

“What is important for us to do is to increase awareness. That’s why we are working with the media. If we increase awareness many of those things that are indicative of early cancer will make people to go to hospital and get treatment.

“Most cancers can be treated if presented early. But people don’t come for treatment early. Someone close to me has breast cancer. She said she does not want the breast to be removed and I told her that when the breast cancer starts smelling you will hate yourself.

“On cervical cancer; fortunately we now know what causes it. There is a vaccine now that prevents the disease and we are working to make the vaccine available.

“We are training more people for the detection of the cancer of the cervix. Much more important also in our 2017 budget we want to upgrade seven more centres for the treatment of cancer.”

Politics / Buhari Lists 3 Things He Must Fix Before He Leaves Office by ahmed486: 9:30am On Oct 26, 2016

President Buhari has revealed some key things he will fix before leaving office. While speaking at a meeting with the director, Global Upstream of Shell Oil Company at the State house, Abuja, on Tuesday, October 25, he revealed these three key things.

Here they are:

1. Accountability

During the meeting President Buhari made it clear that his determination to return Nigeria to the “good old days of accountability” was still on track. He also said that he would make sure all public office holders in Nigeria are held accountable. This has been shown in his continued war against corruption. President Buhari gave the reason for his tough stance on corruption and accountability, saying: “It is only by doing this that investor morale and confidence will return, and the economy will be positioned on the path of growth.”

2. Niger Delta

As part of the meeting which included the Shell company’s concern with security of oil infrastructure in the Niger-Delta. the president urged them that militancy in the Niger Delta was another thing he would fix before he left office. He also called for continued protection by the Nigerian Navy in view of repeated threats of attack by militants.

3. Electricity

Also, the president assured that the matter of epileptic power supply was one he had plans to fix before he left office. He said he would surely solve the country’s perennial electricity problem. This promise is in tandem with the statements he made in March 2016, when he said: “In the three years left for this administration we have given ourselves the target of ten thousand megawatts distributable power. In 2016 alone, we intend to add two thousand megawatts to the national grid.”

Politics / Jonathan Says Corruption Instances Under His Administration Blown Out Of Proport by ahmed486: 7:58pm On Oct 25, 2016

SAN FRANCISCO, October 25, (THEWILL) – Former Nigerian president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, on Monday at the famous Oxford Union, Oxford United Kingdom, admitted that there were instances of corruption under his government, but pointed out that reports about such instances were blown out of proportion.

Disclosing that “there are (even now) still corruption issues”, he pointed out that the exaggerated manner in which cases of corruption under his administration were reported paints a very bad picture of the country to the outside world.
This was as he disputed the claim by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, that Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd), who served as the National Security Adviser, NSA, during his administration, cornered $2.2 billion.

“Yes, there were some issues; yes, there are still corruption issues; but some of it were blown, I’d say exaggerated, and they give a very bad impression about our nation. You cannot say the national security adviser stole $2.2billion. It is not just possible,” he said.

The former president held that the purported stealing was “not just possible” after his administration procured several equipment for the country’s military.

His words, “They said the National Security Adviser stole $2.2billion. I don’t believe somebody can just steal $2.2 billion. We bought warships, we bought aircraft, we bought lots of weapons for the army and so on and so forth and you are still saying 2.2 billion, so where did we get the money to buy all those things?”

Jonathan however posited that he would rather allow the legal processes to reveal the facts, as some of the corruption cases were still in court, and that he did not want to appear as challenging the incumbent government

He continued that “one thing about the issue of corruption is that these matters are in court, let’s allow some of these processes to end. Lately some judges’ (homes) were also invaded. There are so many things involved and we have to follow up these matters to conclusion before we know the fact.

“I don’t want to be seen as a former president challenging what the sitting government is doing so I have decided to keep quiet for the court to look into them,” he said.

The ex-president averred that allegations of corruption were not unique to his administration, explaining that governments had been overthrown in the past because they were accused of being corrupt, only for the new administration itself to be pushed out by another junta touting the anti-corruption mantra.

“You will see that it has become a major topic whenever there is a change of government,” he said.

Arguing that corruption was a global problem, the former president stated that the perception of corruption was greater in Nigeria due to the Nigerian media’s obsession with reporting on corruption.

Hear him, “I am not saying there is no corruption in Nigeria, there is corruption. If you look at corruption there is almost no country that is free, the degree varies, the perception varies.
