The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a hotelier, Victor Obano, for allegedly turning a 23-year-old female job seeker into a commercial sex worker in the Ijegun area of the state.

The police said Obano, who owned Tisa Hotel, allegedly lured the victim, Elizabeth, from Akwa Ibom, promising her employment in Lagos State.

Obano allegedly thereafter turned the job seeker into a sex worker in the hotel.



PUNCH Metro learnt that Elizabeth, a mother of two, reportedly got tired of being a commercial sex worker, and on October 5, told her elder sister on the telephone what she was going through.

The sister was said to have informed the police at the Anti-Robbery Squad of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba, leading to Obano’s arrest.

Our correspondent gathered that another accomplice, a commercial sex worker, identified as Grace Edet, who allegedly was Elizabeth’s supervisor, was also picked up by the police.

Speaking with PUNCH Metro at the command headquarters, Ikeja, Obano, who admitted to have brought the victim from Akwa Ibom, said he only assisted her to find a means of livelihood.

He said, “I am the manager of Tisa Hotel in the Ijegun waterside. I am not a human trafficker. It was only this lady that I brought from the village. I met with her father and he explained her predicament. She is 23 years old. She has two kids and she was living a miserable life. So, I decided to get a job for her.

“The police arrested me because I seized her phones. They said I did not want her to contact her family members, but I collected her phone because I did not want her to have an affair with several men.

“It was her elder sister who reported the matter to the police. The victim is with her brother presently. The arrangement was that I would be paying her and she would also hustle in the hotel and send the money to take care of her father.

“The police should let this matter be settled amicably. It is a family issue.”

The accomplice, Edet, told our correspondent that Obano had instructed her to train Elizabeth in commercial sex.

She said, “I have worked in the hotel for some years. I am a commercial sex worker. When the manager came back from Akwa Ibom earlier in the year, he returned with the lady. He handed her over to me, saying I should teach her some tricks of the trade.

“I did not know the arrangement between them. When I asked the lady why she was brought, she replied that she was asked to hustle at the hotel. So, I do not have any fault in the matter.”

A police source told our correspondent that Obano allegedly had more girls he used as commercial sex workers in his hotel.

The state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, who paraded the suspects, said the command would not tolerate any form of crime, urging the public to always avail the police of credible information.

No fewer than 8,692 graduates on Saturday
bagged diplomas and first degrees at the 20th
convocation of the Ambrose Alli University,
Ekpoma.

The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof.
Ignatius Onimawo, who presided over the
ceremony, said the graduates were drawn from
the 2013/2014 and the 2014/2015 academic
sessions. He said that the university also conferred degrees on 492 post graduates in the two sessions.

The Vice Chancellor said that since the
inauguration of the university’s governing
council in 2013, 14 of its programmes had got full accreditation, eight interim while six were
denied. Onimawo, however, said that the areas of shortfall had since been remedied and the
university was ready for re-assessment in these
areas.

He also disclosed that 136 academic staff, 276
senior non-teaching staff and 443 junior staff had been promoted. In his opening remarks, the chancellor of the university and Etsu Nupe, Alhaji (Dr) Yahaya Abubakar, said that education was a system that started from birth. He said that it was like a relay race which must
be faced with humble heart and open arms. Abubakar told the graduates that their
graduation was the climax of a strong spirit and
sacrifice.

The traditional ruler said that the graduation
ceremony should be the springboard for greater achievements for them in the future. Abubakar urged them to always look around for
a problem they could solve and they would
never be poor in doing so.

Also speaking, Gov. Adams Oshiomhole of Edo,
stressed the need for Nigeria to re-order its
priorities, as the education system must never be allowed to fail. He said that his administration had accomplished a lot in education such as increasing the annual
subvention to the institution from N1.2 billion to
N3.6 billion.

The governor said that government must never
default in ensuring that teaching and learning
continued.

The National Electricity Grid, yesterday experienced further drop in its generation to
about 3, 531.7 megawatts (mw).

This will translate to a drop in supply sent out to the 11 Distribution Companies (DISCOs) across the country. Statistics obtained from the Nigeria System Operator (NSO), a section of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), indicated that about 78242.67mw hour (mwh) was sent out on Saturday for supply across the DISCOs.

Also, while electricity generation peaked at
3,808.5mw, there was a significant drop the
same day to 2,931.9mw. Meanwhile, the Generation Companies (GENCOs) had earlier attributed the recent drops in the country’s generation to inadequate gas-to- power for the mostly gas-based power plants.

The report further reads that, the highest system frequency recorded on the day under review was 51.62 Hz, while the lowest frequency was 48.87 Hz. However, there are strong indications that the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, might be forced to increase electricity tariff by 20 per cent, as distribution companies across the country, have threatened a total shut down of operations, if their request is not granted.

The proposal from the distribution companies,
seeks to increase the current rate of N22.8
kilowatts per hour, to N105 kilowatt s per hour. The planned increment is coming, not less than 8 months after the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, had increased electricity tariff by 45 percent.

Despite the nationwide condemnation and
disobedience of court orders on the 45 percent
increment, the Distribution Companies have been reported to have sent a copy of the new proposal to electricity regulatory body, for ratification and enforcement.

It was a sorrowful nightfall for two members of the National Youth Service Corps last Wednesday in Asarama Community, Andoni area of Rivers State, as they were robbed and r*ped by "militants".

The ladies were said to be in bed at their unsecured lodge in an isolated part of the community when the gunmen broke into their rooms. The operation which started at midnight lasted for more than two hours, with the two female corps members r*ped, and phones, food stuff, clothes, shoes, money among others carted away.

In a phone conversation with The Nation, one of the ladies who didn’t want her name in revealed, said the gunmen numbering seven wore face caps except for the ring leader, who was hooded. She said the "militants" hinged their actions on the failure of government to pay them their dues.
“The gunmen broke the door with their legs. No burglary proof or protector. We were about seven in the lodge. We had five serving Corps members, one ex-corps member and one other person. They entered my room and I was told to knock on other rooms. They came here with guns and cutlasses.
"They asked all of us out of our rooms and they led all of us into an empty room. Then later they came to ask if we had any male Corps member because the lodge is like a wing. It was the first wing they robbed in the first hour of the operation.

In that first wing, we had just one male Corps member; so they took him to the other room and beat him with a cutlass.
They asked him to pull his trousers. "We, the girls were packed in an empty room and
they told us to stand up one after the other and they led us to our rooms. Some phones were collected and luckily for some of us, our phones were not with us because we were charging it. I had my phone with me but immediately they came, I hid my phone because they did not come with a torch. It was our torch they were collecting.

There has not been light in our lodge since we started serving. We have been using a generator set and we don’t put it on
overnight. "So there was no light and they didn’t come with any source of light. They asked me to put on my torch. They asked us how much we had as they led us to our rooms. As they were doing that, they were beating, slapping and hitting us. They searched the
rooms and asked us to bring the money. So I think because I was fidgeting, I told them the amount I didn’t have.

The one I had I gave them and they were asking for the remaining one. I was still checking when one of them came in to scatter all my stuff. And I was trying to tell him that was just all I had. They asked me to kneel down and went into other people’s room to do the same thing. “When he came back into my room, he locked the door and asked me to look for the money, else he would kill me. I told them that I didn’t have any money apart from the one I already gave them.
"Then he (gunmen) asked me to pull my dress, and I was actually r*ped that night. I struggled but he overpowered me. He was beating and slapping me.
The marks are still on my body . He was the one who had the gun with him and he had already locked the door on us. One other female Corps member was r*ped in our room too.

"After that, he told me to lie faced down on my bed, then also took some things from my room and left. He told me to lock the door when he left and warned that I shouldn’t open the door for any other person that when he wants to come, he would knock.
"Then I was hearing footsteps; I think they were
carrying the food stuff that they saw in other rooms.
They went to the other wing where they met two men and a lady and they collected their phones, foods stuff, clothes, shoes, and some plates too. All these lasted for more than two hours. They sounded local and they were saying “since the government did not pay us; no vex o. All these things, na hunger cause am. If government no pay us, then if we get gun, we go find our way .’’

Expatiating further, she said: “There is no police station in that area. And our lodge is bushy, so even if we called for help, no one would have heard us. If you are coming into the community, our lodge is the first house. It was my pastor who took us to a hospital. The hospital is in another community entirely, there is no health facility where our quarters is located. “

The local inspector, local government chairman
and some other people visited us in the hospital and took care of our hospital bill. We were adequately treated and given drugs to prevent pregnancy or infection. They told us to leave the place.
“So, the place is under lock now. I feel very bad.
It’s very heartbreaking and traumatising but I
know God has just been helping me. And with the people around me, I’ve been so encouraged. I know God knows about everything that happened and I know those that did it will not go unpunished.”

Meanwhile, corps members have become
apprehensive since the incident, especially the
females.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has said the present administration’s fight against
corruption will touch every sector in the society.
He lamented that corruption had permeated

2016 convocation ceremonies of the Afe
Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, where Governor

Sometimes in 2002, Chief Babalola argued the case for the establishment of Independent
Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences
Commission where he let the court realised that
corruption is the greatest problem of our nation.
“All the institutions of government , I mean the
executive, legislature and the judiciary are
corrupt.

What we need is serious reorientation .
That is why ABUAD is a great university
because it teaches learning , character and
morality. So, value reorientation is a key weapon to fight corruption.
“That was why the present federal government is intervening, because if we
refuse, every facet of the country will fail.
We must act fast and deal with the situation as
quickly as possible.”

The Vice President while responding to
Fayose’s request said ‘Ekiti state deserves
an airport but I have discussed what we need in
return with his Excellency. “The Federal government will continue to give support to every project that will fast-track development in each of the states of the federation. We know how important this airport is to ABUAD.”

He commended ABUAD for blazing the trail in
