Patient Dies In Kwara After Striking Workers Switch Off Ventilator

A patient at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital in Kwara State has died following an industrial action embarked upon by health workers amidst the coronavirus disease.

Channels Television learned from a family source that the patient, Olusola Olagunju, had been on life support before the incident occurred.

The victim was said to have died after the aggrieved workers switched off the oxygen.

A friend of the deceased, Ezekiel Adewole, said the unfortunate incident occurred on Tuesday.

Adewole explained that the patient died before being evacuated to another hospital for medical attention.

“He was referred to UITH, Ilorin for treatment. He has been undergoing this treatment for a while. He had difficulty in breathing, that is the only issue he had.

“He was okay, very active online. He was always on online – WhatsApp, Twitter and all others. The only thing is that he could not talk frequently on phone.

“He was using the support of oxygen. On Tuesday, we heard that the UITH went on strike. On that fateful day, they switched off their light.

“This guy was living on oxygen, electric oxygen. Immediately they switched off their light, he could not use the oxygen any longer and that was how his system collapsed.

The compound of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital Teaching Hospital where a patient on life support died over the strike embarked by health workers.

“In the process of taking him to another hospital, he gave up. His family also sought the assistance of an ambulance, but they were denied because the drivers were also on strike,” he said.

But reacting, the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) at the medical facility registered its displeasure over the situation that cost the patient’s life.

NARD Chairman, Lanre Oloshunde, however insisted that as medical practitioners, patients owe them the respect as they perform their duties.

“We have suspended the strike. The strike was informed from a security situation that happened at the hospital in which one of our doctors was assaulted on duty.

“Since then, the management of the hospital has been able to respond with some security measures. At least to some extent, that has guaranteed the safety of our members being able to work.

“We heard that our security was not guaranteed then, that is why we had to go on strike. Thankfully, there has been some security improvements so far in this regard,” he said.

While praying that the situation does not repeat itself again, Oloshunde advised members of the public against attacking health workers.

A crime is a crime.

The fact, that he stole money, wasn't denied .
Crime is not a crime if there is no law against it.
In a country where there is no law, there cannot be a sin.
Corruption charges are not about stealing money alone.
He (Bode) was charged with contract splitting
(which was not a crime at the time he was in the office) not embezzlement.
Business either private or public has process which must be followed.
You can be charged for misappropriation of fund respective of your good intentions if due process is not followed.
Laundry (and not with preceeding embezzlement motive) can send anybody to jail even if the money is yours and you refuse to declare it.
More so, for you to understand better, using of phone is not against law today, this is because there is no law in Nigerian Constitution that against use of phone for good purpose. Imagine, if in the next few years, may be due to some complications in the society, use of phone is criminalized and the penalty for it, is castration. Will you agree with me that you should be castrated for using phone now in that future when it would have become a crime?
A lot of Nigerians are illogical and emotional with beclouded reasoning in their sentimental judgements.

Don't get it twisted. Bode George was cleared on the technicality of the case not on it's credibility. The law sometimes can be a bitch and cases are lost because of technical errors. Many criminals had walked free due to that.

The apex court said Chief George was tried under a law that did not exist at the time he served as board member.

Your highlighted part is the real deal.

Wonders are un-endable.

In a sane country, someone like Bode George (a convicted thief) should have been hiding his face and name in shame.
But in Nigeria, what do you get? They are the elder statesmen who olodo journalists would grant audience and interview on national issues.

You can imagine someone who's talking about antecedents.

This country matter funny pass comedy central.
In a sane country, only stupid people will say that a person that has been cleared off (found not guilty) of corruption charges by Supreme Court is a convicted thief.
He was charged for contract splitting.
As of when he was a NPA chairman, there was not like a was against or for contract splitting.
So, you was charged in retroactive.
Therefore, Supreme Court wasted no time to quash his earlier conviction.

Can you read? Between 2010 - 2015, under Jonathan, Nigeria borrowed $35 billion USD, depleted the foreign reserve and sold oil at average of $100 per barrel, yet, nothing to show for all the revenue windfall, borrowing and depletion of savings.
Whereas under Buhari between 2015 and 2020, Nigeria has borrowed $16 billion USD, earned less from oil revenue @ average of $45 per barrell, and added to the foreign reserve.
If one is not a thief, the difference should be very clear.
You need to study the tables you used to indict yourself very.
