A violent clash between Hausa traders and some Igbo youths left many wounded in Asaba, Delta State on Thursday. Over 200 northerners, most of them soaked with blood, have taken refuge at the B Division of the Delta State Police Command, Asaba, as a result of the violence. Though, there were various versions of the cause of the violence, our correspondent learnt that some Igbo were provoked by the burial of the easterners who lost their lives in the North in Onitsha, about 15 minutes from Asaba. The deceased were suspected to have been killed by Boko Haram. The Igbo youths were said to have been angered by the thinking that while they were still mourning and burying their dead, the northerners in the area were going about their trading. Some of the injured were receiving treatment at the Police Clinic and state hospital, Okwe, close to the division at the time of filing this report. The popular Abraka Market operated by the northerners was deserted as hoodlums hijacked the situation to burgle shops in the market. More than 10 truckloads of riot policemen were stationed at the Onitsha Bridge Head to quell the violence which took residents of the state capital by surprise. A victim, who identified himself as Ibrahim, who had several machete cuts, said he was able to escape from Onitsha but was stopped by some hoodlums in Asaba who injured him and escaped with his motorcycle and mobile phones. Another unconscious victim, a yam seller who had his face bloodied, recounted how he was hit on the head by his assailants while he was trying to escape. “If not for the sake of the policemen who came to my rescue they would have killed me by now. We were caught unawares and there was no way we could have fought back as they far outnumbered us,” he said. The Divisional Police Officer, Usman Yusuf, said the violence emanated from Onitsha, adding that the division was only trying to save the lives and property of the fleeing northerners. http://www.punchng.com/news/confusion-in-asaba-as-igbo-hausa-clash/ |
Another indication that the country’s oil sector is deep in corruption emerged on Thursday with a petition by the Liberian government alleging that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation supplied one million barrels of crude in excess of its request in 2009. The petition tendered by a member of the House of Representatives Ad Hoc Committee on the Subsidy Regime, Mr. James Faleke, indicates that while the Liberian government requested 10,000 barrels of crude, the NNPC allegedly used a Nigerian firm to supply one million barrels in excess of the request. The petition was sent by the Office of the Auditor-General of Liberia. The petitioners claimed that the corporation collected full payment for the excess supply but did not remit the money to the Federal Government. “The petition is here with us; it has not been addressed. We just feel that we should bring it to your notice”, Faleke told the Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Mr. Austin Oniwon, who appeared before the panel. Oniwon dismissed the matter, saying that he was not aware of the allegation but he promised to investigate the allegation and report back to the committee. Meanwhile, Total Nigeria Plc (Downstream) has denied that it collected excess subsidy payment of N2.6bn in 2011. The company claimed that what was recorded as overpayment against it came as a result of “time-lag effect between submission of claims and the effective date of payments.” The panel had accused Total last week of receiving N18.8bn in 2011 as subsidy on petrol instead of the N16.1bn due to it. The Panel said the company’s Managing Director, Mr. Francis Bussagol, did not give satisfactory answers when the allegation was made last week. However, Bussagol returned on Thursday with documents to explain what the panel said was overpayment. He told the committee that in 2010, the company imported seven cargoes with a subsidy value of N11.3bn. However, he said Total was paid only N8.7bn, representing claims for five cargoes. The MD added, “The outstanding balance of N2.6bn was paid in March 2011 for the remaining two cargoes of PMS received in November and December 2010 respectively.” The panel also summoned Trafigura Oil and Duke Oil to appear before it on Monday next week to clarify allegations against them. The committee had directed Oniwon to bring the two companies or they could be barred from operating in Nigeria. Referring to Trafigura in particular, Lawan said, “We have issues with Trafigura; they must come on Monday unfailingly. The NNPC GMD must bring the company.” http://www.punchng.com/news/nnpc-supplied-liberia-1-million-barrel-excess-crude-petition/ |

One of the passengers who gave her name as Ifeoma Obi told The Nation that the deceased did not do anything that warranted his murder, adding “its was just pure wickedness on the side of the policeman who because of just N20 wasted this young man’s life” She also said that when the policeman first shot at the tires of the vehicle, the deceased who was the driver could not move again, a situation she said helped the killer cop to shoot at the deceased from closed range, shattering the glass of the vehicle. However, the situation took an ethnic coloration as drivers and other hoodlums in the commercial city went on rampage demanding the elimination of Hausa people on the ground that the policeman who shot the deceased was a Hausa man. The situation also escalated when the angry mob descended on the police team earlier sent by the Anambra state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Muhtari Ibrahim to reach and appeal to the rampaging crowd which led to the policemen retreating to avoid further casualties. It was gathered that the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Central Police Station, Mr. Abdul Yusuf escaped death by the whiskers when the angry mob descended on him when he led his men to the scene of the incident. The angry mob also went on the rampage in different parts of the commercial city hunting for Hausa people who led to many of them taking refuge at the Central Police Station, CPS and other police stations within the city, with many others around the Bridgehead crossing over to Asaba, the Delta state capital.Reacting to the Development, the new Igbo leader, Chief Ralph Uwazurike advised the members of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB not to touch any Hausa people buts should dismantle every police check points within the area with immediate effect. According to Chief Uwazurike who spoke through his second in command, Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka, the dismantling of all police check point became necessary at a time when the safety of Ndigbo is no longer safe even in their land. “ For a Hausa policeman to kill an Igbo driver here because of mere N20 shows that the policeman is a Boko Haram member but we have urged MASSOB members to leave Hausa people alone because they are not our problem, they should concentrate on dismantling all police check points within the area” he said. Meanwhile when contacted, the Anambra state Police Commissioner, Mr. Muhtari Ibrahim said the killer cop had been arrested and will soon undergo orderly room trial and prosecution and called on the rampaging crowd to calm down as effort to resolve the matter in place, six dead Hausa bodies was found in akwa road, |

TWO groups, the Oodua Republic Front (ORF) and the Apapo Oodua Koya (AOKOYA) have warned the Boko Haram insurgent group against any attack on Nobel Laureate Prof Wole Soyinka. ORF said it would retaliate any attack on him, any other Yoruba man or woman or territory. It described Soyinka as a great source of pride to the Yoruba race and world civilisation, adding that in case of any attempted or manifest attack on him or any Youruba son and daughter, “we will carry out retailiatory attacks on all sympathisers of Boko Haram”. In a statement by its spokesman, Jubril Ogundimu, the group said: “We view the threat against Soyinka as an assault on the Yoruba people. This fatwa passed on Soyinka is a declaration of war on the Yoruba people. “We shall retaliate with equal measure of response if any Yoruba person or territory is attacked by Boko Haram. We see Boko Haram as a front for the Hausa-Fulani caliphate. We shall hold the Hausa-Fulani caliphate responsible for any attack on Soyinka.” AOKOYA, in a statement by its deputy spokesperson, Alhaja (Mrs) Medinat Oluwaseyi, said: “We warn today that any attack on Professor Wole Soyinka will lead to spontaneous reactions from the Yoruba nation. We shall respond with a double measure of rage. We will not tolerate a deliberate attempt at eliminating Yoruba scholars and icons by a brutal gang of murderers that takes delight in spilling human blood for game. We caution that an attack on Soyinka will lead to violent reprisals targeting Hausa-Fulani, from the Yoruba nation.” The group added:“We are concerned that Boko Haram has not denied this threat to kill one of mankind’s most consistent advocates for justice. http://www.thenationonlineng.net/2011/index.php/news-update/36240-%E2%80%98we%E2%80%99ll-retaliate-if-soyinka-is-attacked%E2%80%99.html |

The military high command yesterday, gave graphic details of how it overcame a 10-hour fire fight with Boko Haram insurgents to capture what it described as one of the largest cache of weaponry belonging to the group. The revelation came as the Federal Government warned yesterday that the Boko Haram scourge was capable of crippling the economy of Northern Nigeria. At the end of the Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting yesterday the government urged prominent northern leaders to rise up in solidarity with the government in the battle, saying that the conflict was already casting negative indices on the regional economy. Battle ready soldiers Speaking after conducting reporters round what the military described as the destroyed weaponry of the Boko Haram group after yesterday’s gun duel, Army spokesman, Lt Ikediche Onyenonachi Iweha said: “A search on the premises revealed that the facility which was attacked is a bomb manufacturing factory as well as an operational warehouse with several unexploded IEDS.” Lt. Iweha stated that the military on arrival at the suspected bomb factory came under fire from the Boko Haram fighters who also threw several Improvised Explosive Devises (IEDs) at them but were compelled by the exigencies of the operation to handle the situation with caution. The three bedroom flat used as the base of the insurgents located on the outskirts of the Mariri neighbourhood of Kano was yesterday strewn with bullet holes. The flat was dilapidated. The Army spokesman explained the insurgents had substantial fire power as they engaged security agents in sustained gunfire that lasted between 1700hours to 0340hours before they were subdued. He revealed that four casualties were recorded on the side of the armed group during the combat operation, adding that a large cache of arms and ammunition including locally made bombs were recovered. Items recovered included 10 AK 47 riffles with 27 loaded magazines; one pump action gun, 223 packets of live ammunition and several mobile police uniforms. Also recovered from the flat were identity cards and several bags of urea fertilizer and assorted cables for detonating IEDs. The Army spokesman appreciated what he described as the overwhelming support the military has received so far from the general public, and urged them to continue to support the operation for the good of the state. Attacks harmful to Northern economy— FG The Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku, told State House correspondents at the end of the FEC meeting, presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan, that the government was worried that the insecurity and terrorism recurring in some sections of the North could destroy the economy of the North. He, therefore, harped on the need for Northern leaders, elders and other stakeholders to rally round the government and get involved in bringing this development to an end. “If some names were mentioned by some media houses it doesn’t mean that it could be true. It could be false, we don’t just take it on the pages of newspapers because you report a story, whether it is NTA, radio or video it takes more than that to establish the veracity of a claim. So our doors are open to every formal channel of communication for the evolution of a process that should lead to a dialogue.” “So the government is clear we are ready to dialogue already the President had said so”, . The minister explained that, the North more than any region needs peace and stability as it is clearly lagging behind in infrastructure and other development indices; saying “If any region needs peace in the country it was the Northern Nigeria.” Maku who reacted to consistent threats issued by Boko Haram group to bomb parts of the North, pointed out that “terrorism in places like Kano is destroying the North as it hits at the heart of the development of the region”. According to him, Kano serves as a commercial nerve centre of not only the North but services neighbouring countries like Chad and Niger Republic whose traders also patronise the city. ”It makes no sense to attack innocent people and destroy the North. Sokoto is the spiritual headquarters of Islam inNigeria and the terrorist group claims they want to attack the city.” In what way does that help Islam, or progress and development of the region if that is what they are fighting for?”, he said. While assuring that government would continue to deploy resources and develop capacity to contain insecurity and terrorism, Maku urged Northern leaders, elders and other stakeholders to rally round the government and get involved in bringing this development to an end. ”A lot of arrests are being made, about 14 so far. The federal government is investing resources in intelligence and we are beginning to see results on a consistent basis. More security personnel are also being deployed to trouble spots”, he stated. shedding more light on President Jonathan’s call for dialogue, he said: “it is known to government that our children and citizens are involved in these terror attacks, and it has offered an opportunity for them to come forward and state their grievances”. Maku pointed out that while the government is not pleased to deploy its military arsenal against its own citizens and that is why the door of negotiation remains very much open, lack of “coherent submission by those involved (Boko Haram) on what they want to do”, has not help matters either. “If you go and attack Sokoto for example , Sokoto is the spiritual headquarters of all muslims in the country. The sultan of Sokoto is officially recognised as the leader of muslims in Nigeria. He is the Prime leader and authority of islam, so if for example threaten to attack Sokoto what is the benefit? and that is why we continue to say that we do not see much of religion in what is happening, because if Sokoto is virtually an islamic centre and the headquarters of the caliphate that spreads islam to most part of Nigeria and even south-west so if you go and attack Sokoto in what way does it affect the course of Islam if it is Islam they are fighting for”. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/02/kano-how-we-subdued-boko-haram-army/ |
Am not in support of that,if they want they can choose what ever they want, after all we don't need ikwere for anything, their is a word that say "unite we stand divide we fall" we have enough clans under igbo umbrella which made us to become one of the major tribes in Nigeria so who is losing?onicha in anambra got a lot of rivers people living there like ndokis, bonny, few ijaws, i don't see the reason why after building most of our infrastructure and build ourselves back even x 10 from what we have before with these achievements we still got energy to ask ikwere people and other little groups in rivers who is igbo or not? i think we have gone pass that level, the gate is closed,SE still coming up in developments and we still need more things to be done and some of this people in rivers their is no improvement what so ever, even after the war they are still under developed.Only PH, We are far more better than them,so whats the point asaba people dominated most lands in onitsha and they living in peace with other igbo clans ![]() |
