Fintechs have clearly taken over the retail space, no doubt about that. But traditional banks still hold the public sector and commercial banking space, and that is where the real money comes from for most banks. Do you think fintechs can enjoy ₦10 trillion in stable deposits from retail customers alone to support serious trading and large-ticket transactions? That kind of stability usually comes from public sector funds, World Bank-assisted projects, government grants, and other institutional balances, not from the retail base where funds move in and out quickly. In a way, fintechs have even helped traditional banks by taking away the noise and daily stress that comes with managing millions of small individual customers like me and you. This now gives the banks more room to focus on big-ticket mandates, corporate deals, and public sector relationships. |
Let us be honest about the situation. A significant number of individuals who pursue studies in some institutions in neighbouring countries such as Togo and Benin do so because they were unable to secure admission or meet admission requirements in Nigerian universities. In many cases, the institutions they attend have questionable standards, and the process of obtaining certificates can sometimes lack the rigor expected of accredited universities. As a result, when some of these graduates return to Nigeria for national service or employment, many struggle with the basic competencies required for certain roles, which can create challenges in the workplace. Furthermore, several of them encounter difficulties when attempting to pursue postgraduate studies in Nigeria, as some local universities are reluctant to recognize their qualifications. For these reasons, I believe the decision being discussed may not have been the most appropriate |

Yankee101:Sheikh Ahmad Gumi is a controversial figure but not everything claimed about him is equally proven. Reliable reporting shows he was detained in Saudi Arabia in 2010 after inquiries about his contacts with Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, though there is no clear public evidence he “mentored” the bomber. In 2025 Saudi authorities barred and deported him from the Hajj. Gumi is well known for going into bandit camps and acting as a negotiator — many praise this as peacemaking, while others say it encourages or legitimises criminals. One of his known associates/negotiators, Tukur Mamu, is currently facing criminal charges and prosecution testimony alleges he collected and misused ransom payments. There is no public record of an international legal designation of Gumi as a terrorist; descriptions like “extremist” are often opinion or political characterisation rather than a formal legal status.
