as I stated earlier the car gear can be engaged with stepping on the gear, once you push the knob by the side of the gear handle which is very flexible the gear will engage

Car was left in park position, the car was driven to that position without switching off the engine hence you can change the gear position if you want to move again without stepping on brakes since the hand break was on. But if I am to start the engine and even release the hand brake I still need to step on the brakes before changing the gear.
