I recently bought a UK used HP elitebook 8440p and have some issues that I'll need help on.
1. It runs on windows 8.1 pro but the 500GB HDD wasn't partition during installation of the OS. I have read and downloaded materials and Youtube videos on how to partition the hard disk drive and I believe I can do it myself. However, how best do I partition it. I mean, how should I divide the drives. What size should I allocate to the C: drive and the yet to be partitioned drive? I intend using the C: for programmes installation only and yet to be partitioned drive for saving my files.
2. Base on the specs I saw online before purchasing it, it was said to come with a NVIDIA NVS 3100M Graphics Processor and a Video Memory of 512. However, what I've been seeing is Intel integrated HD graphic. Could it be that my version doesn't come with the graphic processor I saw online or am I missing something or do I need to download and install the Nvidia drivers on HP site?
3. What's the actual capacity of the charger for this laptop and what are the implications of charging it with an higher capacity charger?
Thanks!
1. Whilst you may find software that will partition you HDD with the OS installed I'd always recommend backup your personal files and use the partition software you wish to use.
If you have a product key, get a copy of Windows 8 on a bootable USB and partition on reinstalling Windows.
Set C: 80-120GB, rest for data and change the default folder location for your downloads, documents, videos and pictures to the second partition.
2. If the device is not listed in Device Manager you aren't likely to have a dedicated GPU. Did you verify this information I device manager?
3. Using a charger with higher amperage will charge it faster. Most laptops will stop charging when the battery is full. Please confirm the voltage and amperage of the original charger and that of the charger you wish to use.

zyzxx: pls do you agree that and board generate more heat that Intel?
Likewise do u no that nividia graphic chipset get more heat than that of intel?
Please stop it! Intel make chips for CPU's, Nvidia make chips for GPU's. A laptop will either have a dedicated GPU or not. If it doesn't, then the iGPU, integrated GPU built with the Intel chip will be used to display images on the monitor. If it has a dedicated GPU it will either be made by AMD or Nvidia
And please get NVIDIA right not nividia or nividai!
The motherboard or the chipset used in laptops are not made by INTEL,AMD or Nvidia. (unless of course it's an Intel NUC). Intel specify the chipset to be used on the motherboard. For instance, the chipset required to work with the Intel core i7-6700 is a Z170, H110, H170 or B150.
My Asus X202E with the Intel i3-2350M uses a HM76 chipset.
I've had the chance to play around with a 4K PC monitor, the Asus PB287Q but my issue is that with the windows UI scaled to 100% it's practically impossible to read anything off the screen so I've had to scale the windows UI to 150% which means it's now rendered at 1920 x 1080 (Full HD) on a 3840 x 2160 (Ultra HD) monitor.
When you compare the cost for a 28inch 4K and a 28 inch Full HD monitor you are looking at between 80-100% more for the 4K PC monitor.
Based on this, for productivity it's pointless getting a 4K PC monitor if all the work you'll be doing will be rendered at Full HD resolutions. For gaming, that's not an issue for the 4K monitor, the image is rendered at 4K.
my 2 cent
Will post up some pics later.
edit 1/9/2016: after some more research, I finally worked out that 150% scaling in windows translates to 25% of 3840 x2160 which equates to a rendered resolution of 2520 x 1440. Therefore the ideal resolution for productivity is 3440 x 1440 on a 21:9 aspect ratio monitor.
udemzy101: What do u mean by limited knowledge, you counter my post only to post what doesn't make sense to an intending buyer, cos you're a gamer doesn't mean you know a lot about laptops.
Stop Displaying your ignorance online, if you have a comprehension problem, I'll advice you go back to school.
Cos I'm a gamer? Haha! I've had to time to go through the other posts you've created, you should take time to go through mine before drawing conclusions.
udemzy101: What I'd the user hdd doesn't have recovery, what if he got a new hdd with no recovery and want to format?
Recovery is different from formatting, pls stick to the topic.
Win8/10 do it automatically, you can't prevent the OS from doing it. My point it there's no need to format. Just reset the system from within the OS. It give you an option to completely clean the drive or keep your files.
If your systems fails to boot 3 times , Windows will automatically enter that mode too. Try it turn your PC on but reset it 3 times.
I don't know, I've got a cracked version that doesn't allow online activity but I've noticed in the pause menu, there's a connection that's initiated to connect with friends.
Actually, Windows 8 and 10 doesn't require one to go through this the hard way, buying cd, using USB to format.
When win8/10 is installed for the first time it creates a recovery partition. This allows the user to reset the PC to its original setting without the need to create a bootable USB. It even allows one to choose whether to keep their original files or completely remove it.
Unless the HDD has failed, there's not need to going through this with a USB or recovery CD. WIndows 7 is a different matter.
I always recommend doing a backup of your personal files before attempting the process of formatting.
The Gigabyte P35X v5 is a monumentally capable, 4K gaming laptop equipped with specs nearly high enough to support it. While even most desktops lack the strength to pull off 4K gaming, this 15-inch rig is as close as you'll get with a laptop. Upgradeable to an Intel i7 processor and 8GB Nvidia GTX 980M, the P35X v5 may sound like a workout technique, but it can actually handle 4K gaming if you're willing to tone down the graphics settings. Plus, it even packs a battery life longer than the considerably less powerful Ghost Pro and Acer Predator 17. If Ultra HD gaming without being tied to a desk is your goal, look no further.
Guy, you don try abeg, this OP no fit do research before him begin post e opinions. I just read another article. He is leaving himself open to be ridiculed. https://www.nairaland.com/3272889/how-make-new-hp-15
udemzy101: Like I said in my first post, let's make this interactive ,stop posting your subjective opinions.
Pls through my post, including the one I quote the guy stalking me.
This are my own objective opinion, this is what have noticed and like I said not all latest laptops come with the things i mentioned, I also said one should make a good research before buying.
Except if you steal the money or work in government house, I see no reason why you will buy a laptop worth 150,000-250,000 only to repair it within some months due to motherboard failure.
If your laptop comes with 2GB on-board and you want to upgrade to 4GB how will you do that? Pls don't just comment base on the topic, read it and give your objective opinion
Then in your article you should clearly state to the reader in your original post that you have limited knowlegde of what you saying.
I will tag you, and debunk any rubbish you are postin online.
Your review is absolutely useless because you've taken a class of people like Silkmoth33 said , and given reasons why they should buy the latest. Clearly this is targeted for akara sellers.
You use the phrase, "they come with on-board processor/memory" ...what electronic device doesn't? This is nonsense. Modern laptops have their CPU's soldered to the motherboard to save space. How can they boast of light weight laptops with a desktop-sized chip that requires more surface area. Is what tech does, devices shrink because of advancements in working with silicon wafers.
Don't confuse people with your rubbish guy. Already you've got 3 people with the know-how critiquing your article with substantial arguments. That should be enough already to take the original post down.
udemzy101: For what naa? How many eyes I get? When no be movie or football I was use am watch.
What will I be using a 34inch for? Except if one is running a CCTV camera in his office lol.
Anyway, I still insist that a 17.3inch at most,is ok.
The 'real estate' allows for more application windows to be opened, increasing productivity. Before you jump to conclusion, let's just assume one is running 4 different applications. One won't have to always minimise, to drag application windows to the front so one works faster. Having the same on a smaller monitor will mean text size is very small, that can strain your eyes. You can't see that because you now you have to defend your position that 17.3 is enough. It's an ultra wide monitor not a tv bro. It's designed for professional use, for power users. Those who care to increase productivity.
tunisbaba: I noticed a new trend that instead of using desktop computers, some offices now deploy laptops as their main workstation, but little did they know that they are making a bad decision that can ground their business and even lead to breach of company’s privacy.
In as much as laptops have a lot of known advantages over desktops, it is worth knowing that they are not always ideal in conventional office settings and here are the reasons you should invest in equipping your office with desktop computers, instead of laptops.
Reasons Desktops are better than Laptops in an Office
Theft: Burglars can burgle an office and carting away valuable properties including computers. I once heard of an unfortunate incident whereby burglars entered an office through the roof of the office complex and went away with over 30 pieces of a company’s laptop computers. Imagine if the burglars were to steal 30 pieces of desktop computers. How easy will that be?
Repair and Upgrade: Desktop computer can easily be repaired in the case of damage or upgraded if you want to improve its efficiency. Most faults on desktop computers can be fixed in your office without the repairer taking the system to his workshop, so you can be sure your privacy is not breached. In the case of laptops, replacing a peripheral component as simple as keyboard might require your computer to be out of office for weeks.
Price/Performance Ratio: Desktops are fantastically cheaper than laptops. A laptop computer with Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM is far more expensive than a desktop computer with the same specification. Desktops come with large vacuum space and a cooling system that makes it run more efficiently than a laptop which has its component jam-packed together. Aside this, most new model of laptop computers coming to Africa do not even have fan as part of their cooling system. They now come only with a funny weird heat sink.
Usage Convenience: Monitors of desktop are interestingly larger than screens of most laptops. Therefore, interaction with display on monitor is more conducive, especially for tasks that involve a lot of zooming and panning of an area on the screen. Desktop keyboard and mouse are another peripherals that will make your live easier than the flat track-pad on your laptop.
Health: If you work with a laptop and put it on a desk, after sometimes, you will knowingly or unknowingly put it on your lap; after all, the computer was designed to be placed on your lap top. Research shows that prolong exposure of our laps to the heat coming from the base of a laptop can cause skin burn, cancer and low sperm count. Hence, if you are a man and you care about the continuity of your family lineage, ask your boss for a desktop computer.
It is also worth stating that reasons above do not mean you should not use laptop at all in your office; you may want to use laptop as complement to the desktop computer provided for some of your employees. Laptop can be provided for senior employees that go on regular business trip or those that work from home after office hours.
However, if you prefer best fit and efficiency over smartness and portability, installing desktop computers instead of laptops should be the best choice for your office.
udemzy101: It's normal for people to upgrade, go for the lastest gadget in town with new technology....
Silkmoth33 Lana1 there's some debunking to do!
1. They come with on-board processor - The latest processors used by OEM's like Dell, HP etc are not available to customers so you can't buy them which means they can't be replaced by retail customers. The motherboards in OEM products are custom built and made specifically for a certain shell so in most cases you can't upgrade the motherboard.
2. They are built with on-board memory - AFAIK only the cheap models come with the system memory soldered to the motherboard an example is my Asus X202E..more expensive laptops allow the system memory to be upgraded. Apple Macbook Pro's for instance can be upgraded. If you mean the graphics card, then gaming laptops allow the graphic card to be changed, albeit it is soldered to a daughterboard.
3 In-built battery - All laptop batteries can be changed. It either it's easily accessible or not. With issues with constant power supply, I'll recommend getting one that is easily accessible so you can carry around an extra battery pack.
4. Part are expensive #500 today won't have the same value as #500 in 3 years. One factor that makes it seem expensive is wages not going up in line with inflation. With improvement in technology, prices actually reduce. For example, I remember the cost of a 500GB hard drive a few years ago was steep, with the same money you can buy a 1TB-2TB today.
5. Poor customer care services. Manufacturers will always honour warranty claims, it's the retailer that sometimes chooses to be stubborn. As long as you have proof of purchase within the warranty period, manufacturers will always honour it. Get in touch with them directly if the authorised retailer is not co-operative.
I'll let you have number 6...they use cheaper plastic this days, although one can argue the technological advancements in making plastic is much better. If you doubt this, let me have your email, i'll forward you a presentation from a Rubber seminar I attended a few month ago.
In most cases, there isn't any significant benefit getting the latest as the performance increase between generations is not much. For instance the IPC ( instruction -per-cycle) of a 4th gen Intel i7 CPU is around 10% slower than a 6th Gen Intel i7
