Politics / Sheikh Gumi Disputes Government's Assertion Of Boko Haram Defeat by akelicious(m): 5:55pm On May 02
...Says, Boko Haram is ideological

The popular but controversial Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has refuted the federal government's claims of victory over the Boko Haram insurgency in the Northern parts of Nigeria, noting that the ongoing conflict is fundamentally ideological, which military efforts have not been able to exterminate.

Speaking via a telephone interview on a radio program “Frontline” on Eagle 102.5 FM, Ilese-Ijebu Ogun state, Gumi criticized the government for failing to accurately diagnose the root causes of insecurity in the North, citing a lack of local insights and attempts to exploit the nation's plight. To him, this dissenting perspective underscores persistent challenges in Nigeria's battle against terrorism.

Anchored by Olakunle Balogun, the Head of Station, Gumi said in the interview that nobody in the country is safe as insecurity has been left lingering for a long time, while urging the government to go back to the drawing board, and give the situation a local solution. He reiterated that the government needs to be holistic in its approach by engaging all stakeholders, including the bandits, as done with the Niger Delta militants.

According to him, “the military can kill as many as they can but the ideology is still remaining and persistent, and it has taken a different form. The issue is not just to defeat them physically but also to defeat the ideology”.

Gumi said, the sect should be defeated ideologically to understand that “you cannot exist in a nation like Nigeria with this mindset that you are the only good people and every other people are not supposed to live. We don’t mind if you don’t want Western education, but you should live in peace with people and come out to select leaders democratically and not by barrels of gun or by kidnapping people.

“What I can say is that, truly speaking, the government has not really diagnosed the real cause of these issues for many reasons. One, or lack of local input. Let me give you an example, just recently, almost all the Northern governors went to Washington to see how they can tackle insecurity in the Northern states. This is a typical symptom of our problems here. The problem is local and now you see governors going abroad trying to look for a solution where they don't have it. In the long run, the international intelligence agencies will just use these governors to extract more information about our country for their own benefits.

“Secondly, there are people who are exploiting the treasury, getting trillions of Naira in the name of fighting insecurity. So these people will definitely not like this problem to end quickly. Thirdly is the population; that is, the victim. These victims are looking at it like it's an ethnic or religious or tribal issues depending on how you look at it. It is actually herders/farmers crisis that has degenerated into what we are seeing”, he said.

Speaking on the huge blow insecurity has dealt with the country, Gumi said: “the stage we are is the stage where cancer kills the patient. That is the stage we are now, regarding insecurity. When the problem is left unattended, nobody is safe. Anybody on the road, or at home or in some certain places is not safe of this problem which has been left, lingering for a long time without any plan to curb this problem.

“The government needs to come back to drawing board. Local problem needs local solution. We need to bring all stakeholders to the table and plan how to fight insecurity locally.”

On his constant call on government to negotiate with bandits, Gumi proposed that negotiation could lead to a safe return of captives without necessarily involving financial transactions, hinting at potential prisoner swaps. He portrayed the bandits as marginalized citizens deprived of basic social services like education, infrastructure, and water.

Politics / Nigeria Customs Service Announces Auction Of Seized Food Items To Tackle Hunger by akelicious(m): 3:40pm On Mar 05
The Nigeria Customs Service has disclosed plans to auction seized food items as part of ongoing efforts to address hunger and ensure the availability of essential goods across the country.

The Comptroller General of the Service, Adewale Adeniyi, announced the announcement during a sectoral debate series in the House of Representatives, where he highlighted vital measures being taken to alleviate food scarcity.

Comptroller General Adeniyi stated that President Bola Tinubu has directed the Customs Service to sell locally-produced food items seized at Nigerian land borders directly to vulnerable citizens.

He said the initiative is aimed at tackling hunger and enhancing food availability, particularly for those in need.

He explained, “Mr. President has directed that we sell directly to needy Nigerians food items produced locally but which were seized.

“This is one of the ways to address hunger and food scarcity we are facing. We have started this in Lagos.”

He said that in addition to selling locally produced items, President Tinubu instructed that imported food items seized by the Nigeria Customs Service should be auctioned and sold back to local markets for redistribution to Nigerians.

According to him, the auction is expected to facilitate the circulation of essential food items in local markets, benefiting consumers and the broader agricultural sector.

Politics / Why We’re Building Church In APC Secretariat – Ganduje by akelicious(m): 8:37am On Jan 12
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Abdullahi Ganduje, has said the innovation being made to the national secretariat of the party in Abuja, including the building of a church on the premises, is for the progress of the party and the nation.

The PUNCH reports that religion is often a factor in the Nigerian political landscape where politicians exploit it to garner votes.

Ahead of the 2023 presidential election, the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the APC generated heated debates, with the opposition saying the ruling party planned to Islamise the country.

Speaking on Thursday during a visit to the party’s national secretariat being remodeled, Ganduje said, The innovations are for the progress of the party and the nation. Before, there was no church, nobody went to church on the premises; but now, we have a new church. We have shops to avoid street hawking around the building. And we have concrete drainage.

The media centre in terms of its outlook and equipment, I have not seen any symbol of modern gadgets. We are not in an analogue period. But, I think what I have seen here is analogue. But, our media people are not analogue. So, let us see the media centre as a digital platform.”

APC national chairman vowed to work round the clock to ensure that the ruling party gets more governorship and legislative seats both at the state and national levels.

Coming up in February are reruns and by-elections to fill existing vacancies in the state and federal legislatures.

Also, coming up later this year are governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states.

Ganduje said “Our blueprint is to increase the number of legislators that we have in the country; the number of governors that we have in the country and by implication the number of state Houses of Assembly. That is why we said APC will be active throughout the year.

“In our tradition, usually political parties as institutions are only active during the electioneering. But in developed democracies, political parties as an institution are active because they are not only limited to election and recruitment of membership. It is a two-way traffic. It gives the progress of the government to the people and also gives recommendations on its manifestos. That is how the government is assessed. That is how Renewed Hope will be achieved.”

Meanwhile, the sale of APC nomination and expression of interest forms to members aspiring to the Edo governorship seat that commenced yesterday is still ongoing.

The PUNCH gathered that a former Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Clem Agba, was the first APC aspirant from Edo to pick the forms at the party’s national secretariat.

Henry Idahagbon, a former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Edo, picked the forms on behalf of Agba.

According to a schedule of activities for the Edo governorship election released by the APC, the sale of Nomination and Expression of Interest and Delegates Forms will end on 29 January.

The party is scheduled to elect its governorship candidate at a primary election to be held on 17 February.

Politics / What Nigeria Needs Now - Peter Obi by akelicious(m): 6:52am On May 13, 2023
Mr Peter Obi, the candidate of the Labour Party in the February 25 presidential election has reiterated his belief that what Nigeria needs at the moment is “conscious, planned and aggressive transition from consumption to production-based economy.
Obi, who came third in the president election won by Bola Tinubu, the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC during the public presentation of a compendium in his honour in Awka, the capital of Anambra State on Friday.
Obi said said at the presentation of the compendium on him entitled: “Many Voices, One Perspective” that the many challenges in Nigeria will become things of the past with the right leadership.
He cited example of of the story of how the United Arab Emirates planned to harvest their first set of wheat grown in a purely desert setting through the aid of modern technology to back up his assertion.
On the contrary, the former Anambra governor noted that recent reports from the United Nations World Food Programme(WEP), indicated that Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states in Nigeria would be seriously affected by hunger this year, a situation he described as disheartening.
According to him, there should not be such prediction about Nigeria given the enormous potential the country has in food production.
But he regretted that Nigerian leaders have failed to harness such potentials over the years.
“The combined square kilometer of land mass of Borno( 70.9 sq km); Yobe (45.5 sq km); and Adamawa( 36.5 sq km) which amounts to 152.9sq were far greater than that of Israel which is just 22.1 sq km and yet Israel feeds itself and exports excess to the world.
“With right leadership, which was his commitment, Nigeria would do as well,” he said.
Obi expressed confidence in the Nigerian judiciary, noting that he would be the President of Nigeria in the fullness of time.
He thanked his supporters for their belief in him and appealed to them to see apologies to the elders as demonstration of African understanding of respect for elders or fathers even when they were wrong.
“In our journey to New Nigeria, I am very committed, I am not on transit to anywhere. I have committed to the struggle for a better nation, no matter how long it takes,” Obi said.
In his remarks, Igwe Alfred Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, described Peter Obi as “Man of the Destiny”.
Achebe, who was the Royal Father of the day, said one of the things that distinguished Obi from other politicians was his efforts to stay on the truth and due process.
He commended Obi for consistently following the path of truth, integrity and transparency.
Also, Sen. Victor Umeh, Senator-elect for Anambra Central Senatorial District, described Peter Obi as a great and impactful life.
Prof. Chinyere Stella Okunna, a doyen of Mass Communication who was the lead Editor of the book, said Obi was a man of many parts.
Okunna thanked Nigerians for their faith in Obi, saying that the public presentation of the book was another way of supporting Obi’s political journey towards the Presidency.
Igwe Innocent Obodoakor, the traditional ruler of Agulu, Obi’s hometown, among other 25 traditional rulers and numerous guests, attended the event.

Politics / NDDC Adopts New Youth Development Scheme by akelicious(m): 7:32pm On Mar 28, 2023
The Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, says that it is collaborating with the Niger Delta Chamber of Commerce to train youths and aspiring entrepreneurs to create jobs and boost the economy in the Niger Delta region.

Speaking during a youth Interactive forum organised by NDDC in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, the Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, stated that the collaboration would be based on a new model which would support Small and Medium Enterprises in the Niger Delta region.

Dr. Ogbuku said: " We are considering setting up a Niger Delta Chamber of Commerce that will strengthen young entrepreneurs in the region. It is no longer acceptable that our youths will be at home and receive stipends.”

In a statement signed by the Commission’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Dr. Ibitoye Abosede, the managing director revealed that the Commission is “changing the NDDC Youth Volunteer programme to Youth Internship Programmes where youths will be attached to organisations for one year to learn skills.”

He added: “The chamber of commerce will help us to ensure that the programme is sustainable. We will focus on empowering young entrepreneurs because government cannot employ everybody. We will engage the youths to work for the benefit of everyone.”

Ogbuku remarked that the NDDC was seeking partnerships through stakeholder engagements, noting: “We have gathered at this forum to hear from the youths; to interact with them and rub minds because we realise that we cannot be planning programmes for youths without involving them at the foundational level.

He said further: “The integration of ideas starts from the conception stage. That way, when the programme starts running, ideas of stakeholders are already incorporated. We believe that the youths must contribute to whatever plans we have for them.”

On sustainability, the NDDC boss said: “Over the years, certain things were done in ways that are unsustainable. There must be a change at every stage of growth. If we have used certain options and not gotten good results, we must explore other options.”

He observed that the NDDC had set up a Public, Private Partnership, PPP, committee to explore sustainable relationships which will impact positively on the people of the region.

He declared: "We intend to look at all opportunities for collaboration during the PPP summit which we are planning to take place in April. We cannot continue to rely on International Oil Companies to raise funds for development projects."

In his contribution, the leader of Rivers Youth Forum, Mr. Blessing Fubara, urged the NDDC to make the Youth Interactive Forum a quarterly event, stating that the current management in the Commission had demonstrated sufficient interest in providing for the wellbeing of people.

In his closing remarks, the NDDC Executive Director Finance and Administration, Major General Charles Airhiavbere,(Rtd.), assured the youths that the new ideas put forward by the Commission’s Managing Director had been incorporated into the Commission’s 2024 budget.

Politics / Labour Party Says PDP Planning For War In Enugu, Calls For Audit Of Guns Approve by akelicious(m): 6:50am On Mar 12, 2023
Labour Party says PDP Planning For War In Enugu, Calls For Audit Of Guns Approved For Vigilante Groups

*...LP candidate says PDP deploying thugs, arms for Guber elections, calls for intervention of Security Agencies*

*Saturday, March 11, 2023:* The Governorship candidate of the Labour Party in Enugu State, Barr. Chijioke Edeoga has raised the alarm of alleged plans by the Peoples Democratic Party in Enugu State, to use armed thugs to frustrate efforts at free and fair Governorship and House of Assembly elections in the state, and called on the Federal Government to conduct an urgent audit of the guns approved for vigilante security services in the state to avert what he describes as “a war” on the people of the state.
Edeoga in a press statement that he personally signed, accused the State Government and the PDP of distributing to hired party thugs, the arms, which were approved for procurement by the Federal Government for use to augment the efforts of the conventional security services in the state, also accused the PDP of attempts to steal the Saturday, March 18, 2023 elections by violent means.

He said if urgent steps are not taken to arrest the thugs that have allegedly imported in the state to destabilise the elections, those he accused of trying to steal the elections are determined to make the voting process a bloody process.
He accused the staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of allegedly conniving with the PDP and officials of the Enugu State Government to cause delays in the distribution of electoral materials and urged the Federal Government to mandate the electoral umpire to move all electoral materials from its storage at the Enugu branch of the Central Bank of Nigeria to all the LGA Headquarters in the state.
“From the look of things, what the Peoples Democratic Party is preparing for is not an election, but a war. It is a war against the people of the state, a war against democratic progress in Nigeria, and a war against the popular will of the people. We are making this call because we are also aware that these men are being armed and prepared to operate freely, appearing in Police, Army and Civil Defence uniforms, a decoy that would enable free movement across the state and to all areas targeted for their planned attacks,” Edeoga who was also a journalist and member of the House of Representatives, said.
Going into specifics, the Labour Party Governorship candidate, said the areas allegedly being targeted include Isi Uzo, Uzo Uwani, Igbo Eze North, Igbo Eze South and Udenu Local council areas and some parts of the state capital, urged the security agencies to take steps to protect the integrity of the elections.

“Areas being specifically targeted for attacks and delays in the deployment of materials by thugs include in Enugu metropolis include Okpara Square, School of Dental Technology, Achara Layout Primary School, Idaw River Primary School and Igbariam Primary School, all in Enugu. For Isi Uzo, Uzo Uwani, Igbo Eze North, Igbo Eze South and Udenu Local Government Areas, we have been reliably informed that the Council Chairmen for these council areas have all hired thugs and already harbouring them in some hotels and residences of senior party officials in their respective areas, Edeoga stressed in the statement.

He accused some highly placed people at the top echelon of government and the PDP of being behind the plans, alleging that the Labour Party victory during the presidential elections has driven the ruling party in the state into desperation.
“We have it on good authority that the plans by these enemies of the state, is to strategically target many of the rural communities in the state, where, our intelligence has informed, disruption of voting and/or frustration of collation of results is their core objective. We have also been informed that major polling units with potential for huge Labour Party votes have been identified, with armed and dangerous non-state actors, already briefed to do all within their power, including deadly force and summary killings, to ensure that results in polling units are not collated and uploaded to the INEC server, using the legally prescribed instrument of the Bimodal Voter Registration System (BIVAS).
“We are aware that weapons, which were legitimately acquired by the Enugu State Government for use by the Enugu State Vigilante Services and the Forest Guards to support the efforts of the conventional security agencies in protecting lives and property in the state, are currently being distributed to political party thugs for use in destabilising the electoral process on Saturday.
“These thugs numbering in their hundreds have been aggregated from various places in and outside Enugu State to spread mayhem, fear, intimidation and even summary executions to feed the desperate and inordinate ambitions of people, whose only is to win elections,” the LP candidate said.
He called on all relevant authorities, particularly, the DSS, DMI and the INEC to take every step necessary for a free, fair, credible and transparent election.

Politics / Group Urge Gov. Soludo, INEC Chairman, To Release Ogbaru Federal Constituency El by akelicious(m): 10:57am On Mar 02, 2023
Group Urge Gov. Soludo, INEC Chairman, to release Ogbaru Federal Constituency Election Result

A socio-political group, the League of Ogbaru Professionals(LOP), has called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State and the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Mahmud Yakubu, to order the immediate release of result of the House of Representatives election in the area.

"It is shocking that while results for the presidential election held all over the nation has been collated and a winner declared, that of Ogbaru Federal Constituency held on the same day, and time, still hangs in the balance," the group said in a statement signed by it's chairman, Dr. Innocent Ezekude.

Collation of results of the Ogbaru House of Representatives election was progressing smoothly, until the wee hours of Tuesday, February 28, 2023 when, allegedly, at Governor Soludo's behest, the team was directed to take every document concerning the election to Awka, the Anambra State capital.

"We gathered that before the directive came, candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Arinzechukwu Awogu, was trailing the Labour Party flag bearer, Hon. Afam Ogene, with 9,125 votes to 10, 339 votes garnered by the latter.

"Our findings further show that by 9 am on the same Tuesday, February 28, 2023 the quartet of Political Adviser to Governor Soludo, Mr. Alex Obiogbolu, Commissioner for Information, Paul Nwosu, Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Collins Nwabunwanne and Sly Ezeokenwa, Commissioner in charge of Special Duties, swooped on the INEC headquarters in Awka and remained there till well past 6 pm.

"Besides being close associates of Governor Soludo, Obiogbolu was overheard boasting gleefully that 'Ogbaru would soon fall to APGA'.

"Although many contend that Governor Soludo may not be directly involved in the scheme, political watchers say his officials may have embarked on the expedition purely for percuniary gains.

"As indigenes of Ogbaru, we cannot stand aloof and watch persons who lost the same elections in their various federal constituencies come to toy with the destiny of Ogbaru people.

"Even the unofficial line by INEC, to the effect that make-up election needs to be held in areas where it's personnel could not deploy materials makes little or no sense, especially as such make-up elections have been held in several places, including Abia North Senatorial Zone, and results declared.

"In fact, from the grapevine, the story from the electoral umpire keeps oscillating, from an initial 19 units to 33, then 45, and lately 51 polling units where fresh elections are to be held in Ogbaru.

"Regrettably, in the haste to do the master's bidding, even places where elections have been held, and polling unit, ward and local government collation done and copies collected by agents of different political parties, are inexplicably added to the growing list of places earmarked for new polls.

"It is, indeed, heart wrenching that six days after the conduct of elections in Ogbaru Federal Constituency, no one in INEC has deemed it right to speak to the people, leaving huge tension to hover all over the landscape.

"Conscious of the prevailing security challenges in the area, we call on Governor Soludo to rein in his men, who actually may have been dropping his name, and the National Chairman of INEC, Professor Yakubu, to ensure that the right thing is done," the League of Ogbaru Professionals said.

The protesters who marched from Jaleyemi area of Osogbo gathered at the popular Olaiya junction at about 4pm on Friday.

No fewer than three PDP branded van were sighted amongst other vehicles including motorcycles as the junction became crowded.

The demonstrators mounted road blockades at the roundabout, hindering free movement of vehicles.

However, it was a peaceful demonstration as residents calmly continued the day’s activities.

The aggrieved PDP members accused the Election Tribunal of injustice and unfairness for pronouncing Oyetola as the winner of the governorship election, insisting that Adeleke will remain in office.

The protesters’ placards read– Imole has come to stay; Osun citizens reject Oyetola; Tribunal panel not fair; Olorunda local govt say no to tribunal; Injustice for Adeleke amongst others.

The Osun State Election Petition Tribunal had, on Friday morning sacked Governor Ademola Adeleke and declared former governor, Adegboyega Oyetola as the winner of the July 16, 2022 governorship election.

Politics / Ugwuanyi Coerces Civil Servants, Shuts Down The State Services For G5 Rally by akelicious(m): 4:06pm On Jan 27, 2023
*Ugwuanyi coerces civil servants, shuts down the State services for G5 rally*

Information slipping out from dissatisfied civil servants across Enugu State reveals that the PDP-led State government under the leadership of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi instructed all civil servants to shut down work activities and turn up at Okpara Square for the People Democratic Party rally.

The report is that the State Secretariat, public schools - both primary and secondary and even markets in Enugu State have been closed for the day under the guise of enabling people to pick up their PVCs when in reality, they are being forced to create an impression that the PDP candidate and the party, Peter Mbah is widely accepted by Enugu people.

This comes after two days of IPOB imposed sit-at-home in the state.

Given the abysmal performance of the PDP-led administration in the past seven years, there is hardly any expectations for proper decision-making by this incumbent governor. But it would seem that Ugwuanyi, in partnership with his chosen successor, Peter Mbah, has completely abandoned actual governance and democratic propriety for the chance to renew another four years of failure.

The civil servants are heading to Okpara Square to mark an attendance sheet and avoid punishment from the government.
However, the grumbling amongst them is a clear sign that the People’s Democratic Party has broken the camel's back with this last straw of oppression.

Politics / “A Strategic Food Reserve As A Key Initiative In The Overall Plan For Food Secur by akelicious(m): 2:21pm On Dec 31, 2022
A Strategic Food Reserve as a key initiative in the overall plan for food security in Enugu state” - Frank Nweke Jr

The holiday season is generally a time of merriment and laughter with family and friends expecting to gather around tables of food and drinks.

For many of our brothers and sisters in Enugu State, this is not the reality. From my trips around the State and the requests I have received online and offline, it is apparent that the majority of people are barely making it through the season. The Nigerian Poverty Map by the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics reports that 63.1% of our people live in abject poverty. This is heartbreaking. As always, I encourage us to be our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers at all times, especially now. However, no matter how much we do as private citizens, it cannot cover what can be achieved through the rightful deployment of the resources of the government, which belongs to the people. This is why I am running to become the governor because I understand in clear terms that public resources are meant to improve the lives of our people, and not for a few private pockets.

Reflecting on the economic situation and its impact on the season has further highlighted the need for a multi-sectoral food security strategy with coordinated actions across various sectors from security to agriculture, education, health and nutrition, infrastructure, and social services.

These areas are core to my plan for reigniting the coal city, with clearly articulated steps to implement them. While working to entrench these structural and sustainable changes to improve the State’s Per Capita Income, I also see the need to provide respite for residents in the most underserved communities.

To that end, we will set up an Enugu Strategic Food Reserve (ESFR) for Enugu State when elected into the office of the governor in 2023, God-willing. The primary aim of this initiative is to provide succour to low-income earners and vulnerable communities with one centre in each senatorial zone.

With our goal being to ensure that nobody goes hungry, we will have a robust data-driven plan to place families on a food distribution program for specific durations. However, the Enugu Strategic Food Reserve (ESFR) will not be a purely charitable venture. It will be designed as a social enterprise to serve more than one purpose.

Through the ESFR, we will provide a ready market for thousands of farmers as we purchase and store farm produce from them. It will also serve as a needed storage facility to salvage a portion of the estimated 40% of agricultural produce lost to the unavailability of good storage facilities. Working with the Agricultural innovation Centers that we set up across the six Agricultural zones & Leveraging agricultural co-operatives, we will ensure profitability to our farmers for their improved farm yields.

During the rainy and festive seasons that are notorious for price hikes, we will use the ESFR to moderate food prices by strategically releasing stored grains and other key food items into the market and selling them at affordable rates to indigent communities. This will be done bearing in mind the need for profitability for traders as well.

The creation of a food reserve that is safe and has the capacity to serve our goals will require the involvement of experts, good management and sizeable funding. But with clarity of purpose, transparency, the right stakeholder engagement and the right contractors, it is achievable.

We will begin the process by working with local leaders within selected communities and engaging our Research and Development Institutes, leveraging the academic advantage we have as a State.

Overall, we aim to pursue a holistic economic strategy to significantly improve the quality of life of residents and will always look for innovative ways to achieve this goal, either in the short term or for the long haul.
