PoliticsOsinbajo, Ministers To Ride On Lagos-ibadan Train Next Month by akelicious(op): 8:24pm On Dec 18, 2018
The ambitious Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge project is on the verge of coming to fruition as Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is expected to embark on a train ride from Iju in Lagos to Abeokuta, Ogun state next month.

This emerged on Tuesday as the Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, alongside members of the House of Representatives Committee on land transport embarked on a test-run drive from kilometre 41 to 73 within the Ogun state axis during the routine inspection of the project.

The team alongside journalists rode on two rail cars for over one hour which moved on some of the already laid tracks.

The 156- kilometre Lagos-Ibadan fast rail with extension to Nigeria’s premier port in Apapa is a three-year project but the contractor, the China Civil Engineering and Construction Company (CCECC) is being pressured to deliver the project in less than two years.

While there are some challenges over the right of way in the Lagos axis, work has progressed in Ogun state axis with the contractor working day and night in line with the government’s marching order.

An official of the CCECC told Akelicious that personnel have been deployed to work 24/7 in addition to the massive equipment and technologies mobilized to the sites.

Amaechi however lauded the performance of the contractor on the Ogun axis and charged them to speed up from Abeokuta to Ibadan, stressing that by the first week of January, the Vice President and some members of the Federal Executive Council would embark on train ride from Iju in Lagos to Abeokuta.

He said after that, a free ride for passengers on the axis would be declared for people living in the area.

The Managing Director of the NRC, Engr. Fidet Okhiria, disclosed that eight locomotives and wagons would be deployed for the free test-run service.

The excited Amaechi after the ride which almost extended to Abeokuta, said, “When we started, it was a huge forest. In fact, as we traversed this place, most places are no longer known to us if you remember. In fact there are now bridges in the little water we used to drive across. There are now valleys in the hills we used to climb. There are changes.

“We are gradually coming to the end of the project because we are six kilometres away from Abeokuta and I have been assured that we would be able to ride from Iju to Abeokuta at least by the first week in January.

“The idea is to bring the Vice President and some ministers to join us in the ride.

“When we do the ride, we will then allow passengers to use it up to Abeokuta. Our target is that by the end of the month, we should get to Ibadan by rail; then we can begin to put the pressure on them to build the stations.

“They are working on the stations but they are slow. But I have told them the emphasis should be on the tracks. In fact today, I will tell them to focus on one track to the end so that while we are using that one, you are building the second one. But as you are building the two, it is slowing down the construction period.”

The Chairman, House Committee on Land Transport, Rep. AbdulMumin Jibrin (APC, Kano) said the committee is impressed with the level of work done on the project, saying many Nigerians were not aware that a project of such magnitude was going on.

Career5 Civil Servants Suspended In Ondo State For Alleged Tax Fraud by akelicious(op): 4:05pm On Dec 18, 2018
Ondo State government has suspended five civil servants for allegedly involved in tax fraud of about N200m.

Consequently, the state police command has arrested the affected workers and one syndicate, Ayadi Orimisan that helped them to defraud the state government.

Parading the suspected tax fraudsters, the State Police Public Relations officer,(PPRO) Femi Joseph listed names of the civil servants as Mrs Oluwatoyin Abiodun, Ojo Ayodeji, David Omoyajowo, Isaac Solomon and Femi Tuki.

They were alleged to be fond of issuing fake tax clearance, certificate of road worthiness and and fake driver’s licence.

The PPRO said they would be charged to court as soon as the police concluded its investigations.

Also speaking, the Special Special Assistant to the governor on special duties, Dr Doyin Odebowale said interim investigation had shown that the state government had been defrauded to the tune of N200m and that was why they were handed over to the police for prosecution.

One of the suspects, Mrs Abiodun who confirmed that they had been suspended by the state civil service commission, however denied the allegation.

Politics2019 Presidency: Over 461,000 Pvcs Uncollected In Atiku’s Stronghold – INEC by akelicious(op): 7:37am On Dec 18, 2018
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that 461,988 Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) are still unclaimed in Adamawa state, a stronghold of the presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, few months to the 2019 general poll.

INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state Mr Kasim Gaidam, disclosed this yesterday during the opening of a three-day workshop on election monitoring and support in Yola, the Adamawa state capital.

He expressed worry over lack of lukewarm attitude on the part of some registered voters in the state who have failed to come forward and collect their PVCs despite efforts made by the commission.

Gaidam, who said the state had a total of 1,992,146 registered voters captured for the 2019 general election, noted that “poor collection of PVCs is the biggest challenge affecting the state office.

“So far, there are 461,988 uncollected PVCs lying idle in the state,” he added.

The INEC REC further said all governorship candidates in the state would sign peace accord on Thursday towards peaceful conduct of the 2019 poll.

The workshop was aimed at updating the commission’s staff towards smooth conduct of the poll.

PoliticsVON DG Explains Why 2019 Polls Won’t Trigger Crisis by akelicious(op): 6:29am On Dec 17, 2018
The Director General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON) and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Osita Okechukwu, has stated that the 2019 presidential election will be peaceful and less crisis-prone, contrary to the apprehension in some quarters.

Speaking to a students’ group who came to express support for the re-election bid of President Muhammadu Buhari, the VON DG said the two leading presidential candidates share a lot in common to discourage anybody from precipitating ethnic or religious crisis.

For instance, Okechukwu, said that both President Buhari and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar are both Muslims and of the same Fulani ethnic stock, adding that their campaigns cannot possibly throw up ethnic-based sentiment or tussle.

Okechukwu who spoke against background of fears and predictions of a possible conflict during next year’s elections, noted that most of the negative indices that usually trigger crisis during elections in the country are absent.

He, therefore, urged Nigerians to discountenance the predictions that next year’s general elections might be violent, saying that a lot of indices point to the contrary.

He said: “The two leading contenders, President Buhari and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar are both Muslims and Fulanis. So, the issue of ethnic card is cancelled; the issue of religion is also cancelled.

“In a society like ours, we feel that the possibility of crisis is now minimised. So, when you take the religious and ethnic issues out of the way, and the other issue is about their age and both of them are septunagenarians. Nobody can even talk about the young and old; so, three cards have been cancelled,” he said.

While justifying his support for the re-election of President Buhari, Okechukwu said he has achieved a lot within a short period of time.

“The battle is between President Muhammadu Buhari who frowns seriously against looting of public funds and those who cherish the local slogan, ‘Share the Money. Our common denominator is that Buhari is a man of uncommon integrity quotient. As a result, none of his challengers doubted his integrity quotient throughout his over five decades of public service career,” he said.

Earlier, the students group made up of representatives from universities in the six geopolitical zones in country, said their aim was not just to support Buhari but to secure the future of young Nigerians.

PoliticsLai Mohammed Lambastes Opposition, Says It Peddles Fake News by akelicious(op): 4:42pm On Dec 14, 2018
The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has alleged that the opposition will go any length at fabricating “ludicrous and fake stories” to discredit the government ahead of 2019 elections

The minister made the allegation in Kaduna when he paid a courtesy visit to Governor Nasir el-Rufai on the sideline of the 47th Meeting of the National Council on Information, holding in the state capital.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that states Commissioners of Information, Heads of federal information parastatal agencies and other stakeholder attended the meeting with the theme, “Fighting Fake News and Hate Speech to Enhance National Unity.”

Mohammed said the opposition had engaged consultants whose main job was to churn out fake news at intervals to discredit President Muhammadu Buhari and the Administration.

He cited the examples of “idiotic story of cloning of the President,” alleged freezing of PDP Vice Presidential candidate Peter Obi’s bank accounts and arrest of the son of Atiku Abubakar, the opposition party’s presidential candidate.

The minister, who described the story and allegations as fake, said they were parts of opposition’s strategies to discredit the government and the President to win sympathy of voters ahead of the 2019 election.

He said the opposition resorted to fake news because they were intimidated by the achievements of the Buhari administration and could not engage them on issues-based debate.

He listed some of the achievements in the areas of improving the economy, fighting corruption and insecurity and building infrastructure.

Mohammed charged the states to compliment the efforts of the Federal Government in the fighting fake news and hate speech.

In his remark, Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai said the theme was apt and topical, adding that Kaduna was happy to host the meeting, being the state mostly affected by fake news.

He charged participants to come up with strong recommendation that would help in stamping out fake news and hate speech.

PoliticsGovernors To Meet President Again On Minimum Wage by akelicious(op): 6:30am On Dec 14, 2018
Governors are to meet President Muhammadu Buhari again to find a way out of the controversy surrounding a new minimum wage, just as Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) calls for the implementation in January.

The governors on the platform of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) are meeting with Buhari on Friday.

But the NGF Head, Media and Public Affairs, Mr Abdulrazaque Bello-Barkindo, told newsmen at the end of the meeting that the governors on Thursday and confirmed the resolved to meet the president.

“It was a very short meeting, of course the very last one for the year, the meeting welcomed the newest governor in its midst, the Osun state governor, Adegboyega Oyetola.

“The meeting resolved to meet the president on the issue of the minimum wage which hopefully will be resolved before the end of the year.

“The governors are also meeting the president tomorrow to thank him for the way he has handle the economy,” Barkindo said.

The governors had offered to pay N22,500 while the federal government want to pay N24,000 against the N30,000 being demanded by the organized labour.

The forum at its last meeting set up a committee to meet with Buhari to canvass its position, which it stated was not reflected in the report of the Tripartite Committee submitted to the president.

Oyetola earlier in an interview with newsmen commended the meeting, saying it offered the governors opportunity to peer review each other and share experiences and best practices.

Some of the governors at the meeting were Edo, Lagos, Osun, Kaduna, Kwara, Kano, Plateau, Kebbi and Gombe States.

The governors of Bauchi, Benue, Adamawa, Rivers and Nasarawa were represented by their deputies.

Meanwhile, NECA has said Federal Government must conclude all legal processes for the implementation of the 30,000 minimum wage before Dec. 31, to ensure its implementation by Jan. 1, 2019.

NECA President, Mr Muhammed Yunusa, said at a briefing shortly after the associations’ governing council meeting in Lagos on Thursday.

Yunusa said the N30, 000 minimum wage would lift workers’ purchasing power.

“Payment of the agreed new minimum wage will increase total demand and ultimately stimulate economic activities.

“Government should be focused on how to broaden the nation’s revenue base, ensure the viability of the states of the federation and curb or eliminate wastages,” he said.

Yunusa said it is not uncommon to hear outcry of inability to pay by some employers but it is for each and every employer including government to focus inward to effect the necessary adjustment to be able to pay.

He said the ability to pay should not be an issue if there is efficiency, effectiveness and prudence in the administration of the government resources.

Politics2019 Presidency: CAN Denies Endorsing Candidates by akelicious(op): 7:21pm On Dec 13, 2018
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), on Thursday said the association did not endorse anyone, but only met with 14 Presidential Candidates in Abuja to speak on their plans for the nation.

The President of CAN, Rev. Samson Ayokunle made the explanation in a statement issued by Pastor Adebayo Oladeji, the Special Assistant, Media and Communications to the CAN president, in Abuja.

Ayokunle explained that the issue of endorsing anyone for a second term did not form part of discussions during the meeting.

“Our attention has been drawn to a news story published by an online news outfit that has become notorious for publishing fake stories.

“The story says CAN has endorsed President Muhammadu Buhari for the second term in office after it met with some 14 presidential candidates in Abuja.
“There was nothing like that, either before, during or after the parley; not even at the tail end of the programme.
“The church cannot take the back seat in this situation because it can only prosper when Nigeria prospers. If the election is not free and fair, then, all Nigerians, including the church, will be in trouble.
“So, we decided to reach out to the presidential candidates to ask them their credentials for aspiring to the highest office in the land.
“Also, to interrogate their plans for all, including the church.
“We also brought them together to speak to their consciences so that they don’t set this nation on fire,” he said.
Ayokunle said that when he was asked for the outcome of the parley, he replied that conclusion would be drawn at the end of the meeting.
Speaking on the Buhari’s decline of assent to the Electoral Act amendment, he said: “the Executive and the National Assembly should put their house together.’’
“Whenever there is this kind of disagreement or a stalemate, the executive and the legislature should come together as partners in progress to mutually find a way forward.
“They can’t afford to play with the future of the country as the 2019 general elections is at hand.
“Everything must be done to ensure that the election is free and fair.”
The cleric appealed to the general public to beware of fabricators of fake news for whatever reasons.
Present at the forum were the former governor of Anambra and Vice Presidential candidate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi, while the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amechi, represented the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Also the former Minister of Education, Mrs Obi Ezekwesili, the Presidential Candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria, (ACPN) was at the meeting

PoliticsChild Survival: NOA, UNICEF Enlighten 5,000 Kaduna Community Members by akelicious(op): 3:28pm On Dec 13, 2018
The National Orientation Agency (NOA) with support from UNICEF has begun to educate no fewer than 5,000 community members in Kaduna State on child killer diseases and ways to prevent them.

Malam Hamza Audu, a deputy director in the agency, disclosed this on Thursday during one of the dialogue sessions in Dutsen Mai, Igabi Local Government Area of the state.

The agencies had been reaching out to residents in no less than 70 communities in Soba, Lere, Kudan, Giwa and Igabi Local Government Areas of the state through community dialogue.

Audu said that the measure was to tackle infant and maternal mortalities in the state by teaching parents the essential family practices that could guarantee the survival of their children.

He said that women and children in the state were dying from preventable diseases such as: pneumonia, diarrhoea, measles, malaria and malnutrition.

He said that deaths from such diseases could be prevented with information and knowledge on how to tackle them, particularly, through essential family practices.

Audu listed some of the essential family practices as: good nutrition practices that included exclusive breastfeeding and adequate complementary feeding; good sanitation and hygiene, and compliance with polio vaccine and routine immunisation.

Others are regular health facility visit to hospitals for ante-natal and post-natal treatments and encouraging pregnant women to give births in hospitals as against giving births at private homes.

Also, that parents should also ensure that their children sleep under treated mosquito nets, and the public avoiding open defecation.

Malam Lawal Haruna, the UNICEF focal person in NOA office in Kaduna and the coordinator of the dialogue said that 12million children die globally every year before their fifth birthday.

He said that malaria, pneumonia and diarrhoea were responsible for more than 50 per cent of the deaths among children who were less than five years in Nigeria.

Haruna said that the main goal of the dialogue was to enlist the support of community members to promote the adoption of essential family practices and routine immunisation.

“We are equally advising community members to discourage violence and exploitation against women and children in their communities.

“What we hope to achieve at the end of the dialogue is a commitment from the community members for positive behavioural change to ensure children survival and development,” Haruna said.

One of the community members, Malam Isiaku Mohammed, acknowledged that women in the community rarely attended ante-natal care.

Isiaku added that the rate at which they were usually vaccinated against polio and go for routine immunization was equally low.

He said that the dialogue had equipped them with relevant information that would make them have attitudinal change toward key households’ practices.

Haruna said that such practices would ensure healthy development for their children.

PoliticsAPC Whips Atiku Over Peace Accord by akelicious(op): 6:27pm On Dec 12, 2018
The All Progressives Congress has described as hogwash the excuse given by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party to explain the absence of its candidate Atiku Abubakar from the peace accord signing ceremony in Abuja.

To the APC, Atiku’s absence was deliberate and the excuse given by his party an after-thought.

“To all discerning Nigerians, the PDP and Atiku’s dubious claim of a “communication lapse” as reason for their no-show at Tuesday’s formal signing ceremony is hogwash, as the peace committee duly and formally invited the PDP and Atiku like other candidates and political parties contesting the 2019 Elections”, APC publicity secretary, Lanre Issa-Onilu said.

“Atiku’s eventual decision to sign the peace deal is clearly a face-saving move following widespread condemnation that greeted his initial refusal to agree to the peace deal. We, however, must not lose sight of the dangerous and ominous signs the PDP and Atiku have inadvertently shown Nigerians in the leadup to the elections.

“Again, this brings to the fore, PDP’s open declaration in August this year that the Party will deploy all “means, schemes, shenanigans in all ramification and magnitude” to manipulate the 2019 election.

“The APC reiterates that security and other relevant agencies must be on high alert to check this dangerous threat posed by the PDP’s planned actions for the general elections. In 2019 and beyond, the votes of the electorate must count and the will of the electorate must prevail. We must stand against and resist plans by retrogressive elements who are now nested in the PDP and their agents to disrupt elections through violence and other undemocratic practices.

“For signing the 2019 election national peace accord, the Party affirms the commitment of the President Muhammadu Buhari led APC government to a free and fair electoral process. The APC government has an abiding pledge towards a participatory, peaceful, credible and transparent elections”.

Politics2019: Ekiti Dep. Gov. Canvases Support To Buhari by akelicious(op): 1:31pm On Dec 12, 2018
Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Otunba Bisi Egbeyemi, has canvassed support for President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election in the February 16, 2019 presidential election.

Egbeyemi said Ekiti State has a brighter future under the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government which is executing key capital projects in the state for the benefit of the people.

The deputy governor, who spoke at a public forum in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, said the APC-led Federal Government was carrying out a rail line project that will connect Ekiti with Osun states.

A statement, on Wednesday, signed by his Special Assistant (Media), Odunayo Ogunmola, quoted the deputy governor as assuring the people of more capital projects and empowerment programmes that would change their lives if President Buhari is re-elected in the 2019 presidential poll.

He disclosed that Governor Kayode Fayemi was instrumental to the inclusion of Ekiti in the rail project noting that when completed, the project would boost the local economy and attract more investment.

The deputy governor also urged the people of the state to vote for all APC candidates in the 2019 general elections to help the party implement its manifesto for the benefit of the masses.

Egbeyemi continued, “All I want you to do for us is to pray for this government and to support us. This is the first time Ekiti will be in connection with the Federal Government.

“By February, there is going to be an election and we want every Ekiti man and woman to support us by voting for Buhari.

“Once that is done, you have a man up there and he is one of the best. I don’t need to tell you that Kayode Fayemi is one of the closest governors to President Buhari.

“I want to tell you before March or April, you will know what will be coming to this state by the grace of God.

“The rail line that is coming from Osogbo, it was through the efforts of Kayode Fayemi that Buhari included Ekiti in the project.

“Ekiti was not in the project but Buhari said Ekiti must be included asking why Ekiti was not having rail line.

“There are more goodies that will come from the Federal Government but we must vote APC and ensure that Buhari returns for second term.”

Egbeyemi also spoke on efforts of the Fayemi administration to reduce unemployment through a knowledge-based economy with the Knowledge Zone coming on stream.

He said: “Anyone from Ayegunle and Esunmo side, if they are here, they will know that we have been to those places for inspection and ground work. We are bringing something to that place and when it comes, you will know.

BusinessMTN $8.1bn Repatriation Case: Court Adjourns Till Jan.22 by akelicious(op): 11:58am On Dec 12, 2018
A Federal High Court Lagos, on Wednesday, further adjourned until Jan. 22, 2019 for report of settlement in a suit between MTN Nigeria Communications Ltd, and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) over repatriation of 8.1 billion dollars.

Justice Saliu Saidu adjourned the case for report after parties had informed the court that they were still engaged in settlement talks.

At the last adjourned date on Dec. 4, counsel had told the court that parties were discussing settlement, and had sought an adjournment for report of settlement.

When the case was called on Wednesday, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN) announced his appearance alongside two other senior lawyers for MTN.

Mr Seyi Sowemimo (SAN) announced his appearance for CBN, while Mrs Oluwakemi Kanbu, appeared for the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF).

Olanipekun then said: “we were before this court on Dec. 4, and had told the court that parties were talking settlement, my Lord, the discussion is still ongoing and progressing.

“As a result of this, we seek further indulgence for a date in January, so we can inform your lordship on further developments. We are very much obliged,’’ he said

In the same vein, counsel to CBN, (Sowemimo) said: “I confirm that we are still making moves for out of court settlement, and we will be available on Jan. 22, 2019, subject to the court’s convenience.’’

Counsel to the AGF (Kanbu) also aligned with the submission of Sowemimo.

Following the development and based on agreement of parties, the court consequently adjourned the case until Jan. 22, 2019, for a report of settlement.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that MTN had filed the suit, seeking an injunction to restrain the CBN and AGF from taking further actions to reclaim the alleged debts.

The firm wants the court to hold that CBN lacks power to determine its civil obligations or penal liabilities.

It is urging the court to declare that the CBN acted outside its statutory powers when it wrote a letter to it on Aug.18, demanding a refund of 8.1 billion dollars.

It wants the court to hold that the demand was illegal, oppressive, abusive, unauthorised and unconstitutional.

On its part, CBN alleged that the telecoms firm improperly repatriated dividends, and requested that MTN should return 8.1 billion dollars to its coffers.

Meanwhile, MTN had filed a sister case before another judge of same court, Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke, against the AGF, challenging a withholding tax assessment of 1.3 billion dollars and an import duty tax of N242 billion.

MTN queries these assessments.

Justice Aneke has fixed Feb. 7, 2019 for hearing of all pending applications in this suit.

PoliticsU.S. Replies Jonathan, Pledges Neutrality In 2019 Polls by akelicious(op): 5:53am On Dec 12, 2018
United States (U.S.) Consulate in Nigeria has reacted to the allegations by former President Goodluck Jonathan that former President Barack Obama interfered in the 2015 presidential elections to favour President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Public Affairs Officer (PAO), Consulate General Lagos, Russell Brooks, in a live chat on Facebook, said that Jonathan erred by mischaracterisation.

He said that elections in Nigeria had been plagued by violence, expressing hope that the country would do better like it did in 2015.

Declaring that the U.S. would not be supporting any presidential candidate ahead of the 2019 election, it however affirmed White House’s support for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the media and civil society, especially in the area of capacity building.

He said: “It was mischaracterised in the book about what President Obama or his administration did in Nigeria. The mischaracterisation here refers to not comprehending why we felt it was important for Nigeria to have a peaceful, free and fair election in 2015. And people may not understand why we placed so much importance on having a peaceful, free, fair and transparent election in 2019.

“In the past, Nigeria’s elections had been beset by violence. There have been questions about the fairness of those elections. And we certainly believe that Nigeria can do better. In 2015, Nigeria did better. There may have been some difficulties as they often occur in elections whether here in Nigeria or in the U.S. But Nigeria did better and we believe Nigeria will continue to make progress.

“We are not favouring or supporting any candidate. It is up to Nigerians to decide. Our candidate is the process. The process should be free and fair; it should be a non-violent process. I am not talking of any plus or minus of any candidate; we are not favouring any.”

Jonathan in his book, ‘My Transition Hours’, claims that Obama interfered in the 2015 presidential election in favour of Buhari.

He berated the former U.S. president for sending the then Secretary of State, John Kerry, to Nigeria on the eve of the election to protest perceived moves to postpone the election.

PoliticsRe: 4 President Muhamadu Buhari Tweets That Didn’t Age Well by akelicious(op): 3:58pm On Dec 11, 2018
akelicious:
President Muhamadu Buhari, while seeking the favour of Nigerians to vote for him in 2015, made a lot of promises. But three stood out: he said he wanted to rebuild the country’s ailing economy, strengthen the weak security apparatus and reduced systemic corruption.

After four attempts, Buhari finally hit the target by defeating an incumbent president on 28 March 2015, a first in Nigeria, with millions of Nigerian caught up in the excitement of “Sai Baba, Sai Buhari” and in sharing his message of “Change” for a better Nigeria.

With his four years rounding off next May, The Guardian weighs in the litany of promises by Buhari in a few of his tweets.

Although the administration of Buhari had claimed to have technically defeated or degraded Boko Haram, however, a standard Buhari set for himself regarding the insurgents before he emerged the president showed he is yet to deliver his promise. Moreover, the number of troops killed by the insurgent this year alone suggests Boko Haram remains a clear danger.

“We cannot claim to have defeated Boko Haram without rescuing the #ChibokGirls and all other innocent persons held hostage. #NewNigeria,” he said in a tweet.

With almost four years gone, only 163 are free out of the 276 girls that were kidnapped about 242 weeks ago (almost 5 years ago).

57 fled in the early days after their abduction, three escaped later, and a Swiss-coached mediation secured 103.

Twenty-one of the 103 were freed on October 13, 2016, while the remaining 82 were freed on May 6 2017.

Recent attacks in 2018, including the abduction of over 100 Dpachi schoolgirls in February suggest that Nigeria is never a safe place for the countrymen, especially northerners.

A larger percentage of Chibok girls are still with their abductors.

In the 2018 Global Terrorism Index, Nigeria was named the third most terrorized country in the world with over 8,000 deaths in Nigeria from terrorism from 2015-2017.

There is a sliver of hope, however. The number of deaths attributed to terrorism in the country fell to 1,532 in 2017 from 1832 in 2016. The decline follows the 63 per cent drop in deaths in Nigeria in the preceding year and a 34 per cent drop in 2015.

Herders and farmers clashes have caused the death of over a thousand persons under the leadership of Buhari. Yet no account of conviction of killer herdsmen.

While the herders-farmers clashes from 2015 have claimed over 2,000 lives till date. However, the frequency of the farmers-herders clashes has reduced. The 2018 Global Terrorism Index shows that “Fulani extremists” are responsible for 321 deaths in 2017, a 60 per cent drop in the number of deaths from the preceding year.

However, analysts said such clashes could become Nigeria’s biggest security concern, eclipsing Boko Haram’s Islamist insurgency.

The tweet: I am appealing to you: the damage to this country is great. The level of unemployment and insecurity is intolerable, worsened by corruption.

The last official unemployment data published by the National Bureau of Statistics was for the third quarter of 2017, with the unemployment rate standing at 18.80 percent, an increase of 2.60 on the figures for Q2 of the same year.

Despite the military’s attempts to portray the country’s northeast as safe, Boko Haram is still launching deadly attacks on villages and military bases.

More than 100 soldiers were killed at Metele, Borno State, between 18 and 20 November, and the forces mandated to fight the insurgents have just got their fifth commander in two years. Meanwhile, over a thousand people have died this year in terror-related violence.

PoliticsPDP Demands Immediate Release Of Doyin Okupe by akelicious(op): 1:18pm On Dec 11, 2018
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has demanded for the immediate and unconditional release of its chieftain, Dr. Doyin Okupe, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

In a press statement issued in Abuja Tuesday by Kola Ologbondiyan, the party’s spokesman, PDP described Dr. Okupe’s arrest and detention as an “act of intimidation and harassment” by the Muhammadu Buhari-led presidency — in its bid to browbeat the opposition and dissenting voices in the country, ahead of the 2019 general election.

“This arrest is part of the grand plot to escalate the clampdown on opposition leaders, in an attempt to cow and subjugate them as the elections draw nearer, a scheme the PDP had since alerted the nation about.

“The PDP invites Nigerians to note that the EFCC was unleashed on Dr. Okupe with fabricated charges, just because of his criticisms of the misrule of the Buhari administration, particularly, his last Wednesday’s demand to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare President Buhari as not validly nominated as a Presidential candidate for the 2019 elections”, the party alleged.

The opposition party added that since his comment, Okupe had been threatened, harassed and his home raided by officials of the EFCC last Saturday over claims of cyber stalking, which they could not substantiate, and only for the commission to arrest and detain him on Monday.

According to the party, “It is indeed unfortunate that the EFCC, under President Buhari, has been turned to a militant wing of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to hound, intimidate, harass and even extort money from opposition leaders and other Nigerians perceived to be opposed to Mr. President’s ill-fated re-election bid.”

The party alleged that the EFCC had been compromised by the Buhari Presidency, wondering why it has not invited or even questioned officials of the Presidency and National Chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole, over allegations of corruption.

PDP further asked, “Why has the EFCC not invited the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, and President Buhari’s close relatives, who were recently mentioned by a suspect, Amina Mohammed, as being involved in serial looting of public resources?”

The party said that instead of using their so-called technology and intelligence to “harass and extort money from innocent, harmless and law-abiding citizens”, EFCC officials should join the security agencies and deploy their technology in the fight against terrorism in the North East.

It cautioned the Buhari-led Presidency over its resort to “wicked politics” of chasing after opposition leaders and their family members as such will not save the President from the resolve by majority of Nigerians to vote him out of office and elect Atiku Abubakar, come 2019.

PoliticsCourt Dismisses Ex-governor Oni’s Eligibility Suit Against Fayemi by akelicious(op): 7:19am On Dec 11, 2018
Reprieve came for Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State yesterday, as the Ado Ekiti Division of the Federal High Court dismissed the suit filed by a former governor of the state, Chief Segun Oni, challenging his eligibility to contest the July 14, 2018 governorship poll.

Oni was challenging the decision of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to field Fayemi as its candidate despite not resigning his position as minister 30 days to the May 26 primary election of the party.

Oni, who was an aspirant in the election, is challenging Fayemi’s eligibility on the grounds that the governor did not resign his appointment as Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 30 days before the party primaries .

He also said Fayemi was not fit to contest having been indicted for financial impropriety by Justice Silas Oyewole-led Commission of Inquiry.
The commission of inquiry was set up by former Governor Ayodele Fayose to probe the finances of the state government when Fayemi was governor of the state between 2010 and 2014.
Among others, Oni, through his counsel, Chief Anthony Adeniyi, prayed the court to void the votes cast for Fayemi for refusing to resign and the indictment.

He also wants to the court to withdraw the Certificate of Return issued to Fayemi, and declare him (Oni) as duly nominated APC candidate and the duly elected governor in the July 14 election.

But Fayemi, though his lawyer, Chief Rafiu Balogun, urged the court to strike out Oni’s suit for lack of merit.
The governor averred that he was not a civil servant or an official of APC, hence the resignation clause was not binding just as he added an Abuja court had quashed the decision of the commission of inquiry.

The case, which had earlier commenced at an Abuja Division of Federal High Court, was transferred to Ado Ekiti last week.
Justice Uche Agomoh, while ruling on the suit yesterday, dismissed the suit for lacking in merit, saying: “I am of the firm view that the originating summon is hereby dismissed”
Agomoh, who resolved the issues for determination in favour of Fayemi, said the governor could not be disqualified on the basis of the report of the Commission of Inquiry whereby an Abuja court had quashed the indictment.

The judge said: “Indictment does not satisfy the definition of conviction. He cannot be disqualified”.
Agomoh also said: “The issue of 30 days resignation before election does not apply in this case,” saying the applicant’s claim that Fayemi was an official of APC and a public servant could not be proved.

According to the judge, Fayemi, as a minister of the federation was not a public servant but a political office holder and appointee of the President, hence the 30 days resignation stipulation did not apply. Counsel to Oni in his response, said; “We are going to study this judgment to determine the next cause of action”.

In his response, lawyer to Fayemi described the judgment as wonderful, saying “the court agreed with the positions of
the law in arriving at the verdict”.

PoliticsGroup Gives Federal Government Seven-day Ultimatum To Unfreeze Obi’s Account by akelicious(op): 5:20am On Dec 10, 2018
A group, under the auspices of the G23 for Waziri, yesterday gave the Federal Government a seven-day ultimatum to unfreeze the account of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) vice presidential candidate, Peter Obi, or risk unprecedented protest in the country.

In a statement issued after an emergency meeting, and made available to journalists in Kaduna yesterday, the group said it would use its structures across the states of the federation to stage a mass protest if the Federal Government fails to unfreeze the account.

“We considered the action of the Federal Government as a political witch-hunting and this is an indication that our democracy is under threat,” it said. The group accused the Federal Government and All Progressives Congress (APC) of frustrating the opposition and the democratic process in Nigeria.

The statement, which was signed by the National Chairman of the group, Olaitan Lucky Turaki, stated that it would not allow any Nigerian either as a politician or not to be witch-hunt by the APC-led administration.“We are not going to accept impunity because the refusal of the President not to sign the Electoral Bill is already killing our democracy.

“We urge the government to do the needful before the expiration of our seven days ultimatum to avoid putting the country under necessary pressure, especially at this festive period. Turaki, therefore, urged the National Assembly to use its veto-power to sign into law the bill as a way of strengthening the electoral process in the country.

In another development, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has supported the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) to endorse Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as their presidential candidate for the 2019 election.

The ADC, which said it would always abide with the provisions of CUPP’s Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), assured its members, stakeholders and supporters that all grey areas would be addressed to ensure that its votes are protected in the National Assembly and other elections.

In a statement yesterday, National Chairman of the party, Chief Ralphs Nwosu, said the ADC being a party of integrity, its major priority was the well-being of Nigerians. Nwosu said this just as he maintained that ADC’s legislators at the state and federal levels and others contesting election at different levels would defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and other parties in 2019.

He said the party’s presidential aspirants had been properly briefed before the primary on the decision of the party to adhere strictly to the provisions of the CUPP’s MoU.

Men of the Eastern Naval Command of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Victory in Calabar, Cross River State, have seized 834 bags of foreign parboiled rice as well as arrested 19 suspects.

Acting Commander, Navy Captain Ajomabi Oride, told reporters at the NNS Victory jetty on Thursday that they were arrested in a vessel around Parrot Island on their way to Oron in Akwa Ibom State from Cameroon.

Oride, who disclosed that three of the suspects were Cameroonians and the rest, Nigerians, said the seized rice was worth about N13 million.

The seized items and Nigerian suspects were handed over to the Nigerian Customs Service, while the Cameroonians were handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service.

“It is not is business as usual for the smugglers. You cannot smuggle foreign rice into the country, knowing that it is banned. We will keep arresting them. We should help the local production increase. They are saboteurs because the Federal Government policy is clear on that, to improve locally made rice, so that we can improve on our own economy and if you go out to smuggle rice into the country, you are killing the local industry. The media should help us inform the public that foreign produced rice is out of bounds and not allowed in the country,” Oride said.

Assistant Controller of Customs, Eastern Marine Command, Joshua Omachi, said the rice would be taken to government warehouse awaiting court directive, while the suspects would be taken to custody and prosecuted.

“We have so many rice milling industries and rice is grown in virtually every part of the country. Our own rice is even sweeter. Information has to get to the nooks and crannies of this nation. Let everybody sit up, so we can arrest these things,” Omachi said

Superintendent of Immigration, with the Marine Patrol Unit, Odu Nku Nku, who received the Cameroonians said they foreigners would be profiled and dealt with according to the law.

Politics2019: Buhari, Atiku Playing Politics With Restructuring – Senator Umeh by akelicious(op): 7:06pm On Dec 05, 2018
The Senator representing Anambra central in the National Assembly, Senator Victor Umeh has accused candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the All Progressives Congress, APC, of merely playing politics with their promise of restructuring Nigeria.
Umeh said the duo of President Muhammadu Buhari and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar were using restructuring to garner the support of the people, but have not shown strong commitment to restructuring the country.

Umeh said the national conference of 2014 brought together the best brains in the country from all walks of life, with 492 delegates, which is presently bigger that the size of the country’s parliament.

The Senator, who was speaking to Akelicious in an interview in his hometown, Aguluzoigbo in Anaocha local government area of Anambra State said any political party that does not commit to restructuring in specific terms does not wish the country well.

“That national conference had far reaching decisions that can help this country. It also had the beat brains in the country from all walks of life.

“Restructuring Nigeria would make the economy of the states to rebound because people will return to their original source of wealth as the zones will become competitive, and not the monthly rush to Abuja for allocation.

“Both APC and PDP have not made firm commitment to restructuring Nigeria, and any party that does not see restructuring as the cynosure of all eyes does not wish Nigeria well.”

He said that while APC has made what he described as epileptic promise by selecting parts of the restructuring document agreeable to them, the PDP candidate merely mouthed it, but refused to state in specific terms how it hopes to do it, and which part of the documents it hopes to put to work.

“PDP said it would restructure, but what the candidate failed to note was that restructuring has components, so he should tell us which of the components it is amenable to.

“For now, only APGA (All Progressives Grand Alliance) candidate, Gen John Gbor has truly committed to restructuring Nigeria. Nigerians should not be fooled, they should ask questions because only restructuring can truly bring peace and put away hate, mutual suspicion and others in Nigeria,” he said.

Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) said it has put in place all the necessary modalities to boost revenue generation in 2019.

KEDCO Managing Director, Dr. Jamilu Isyaku Gwamna, who disclosed this at the just concluded marketing conference in Kano, said proper assessment had been done and strategies put in place.

Gwamna noted that the outcome of the assessment was already yielding the desired results, adding that necessitated the N48billion target for 2019, which translates to N4billion every month.

He said that KEDCO’s receipts before now hovered around N1.5billion, adding that after the pre-restructuring strategy, collection increased to N2.7billion.

“We have done our assessment and based on that, strategies have been developed so as to achieve the desired result and target for 2019. Before now, our collection was put at N1.5billion.

“After the pre-restructuring collection, we were able to up our collection by N1.2billion to have N2.7billion. This is huge and we hope to consolidate on that in the coming year,’’ he said.

The KEDCO boss remarked that there were other consolidated gains of restructuring, including “achieving book code realignment, feeder metering, customer asset validation tagging and indexing, increased deployment of working tools and safety gears and staff training and retraining.”

He explained that the N4billion target for 2019 would be pursued using four strategies, such as being a responsive and customer-centric company, as well as improving synergy with stakeholders.

We intend also to create a flat-structured organization, where everyone has the opportunity to influence the direction of the company and building an ecosystem approach in order to solve problems and open new opportunities.

Gwamna assured that the N4billion target collection of the company would be in compliance with the satisfaction of customers, adding that 2019 would be a priority year to minimize complaints from customers and ensuing a world-class customer service delivery.

Politics2019 Presidential Election Not `life Or Death’ For Buhari — Onyeama by akelicious(op): 1:42pm On Dec 04, 2018
Foreign Affairs Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama, says 2019 election is not a matter of `life or death’ for President Muhammadu Buhari because he will be happy to accept the verdict of the electorate.

Onyeama in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said that all the president wants to do is to create a level playing field for all the political parties.

“He is fully committed to ensuring that the next election in 2019 is free, fair and transparent and that each vote should count.

“I think most importantly for him, it is not a matter of life or death. That is where he is coming from. He is very happy to accept whatever the outcome is and the will of the people.

“He doesn’t want to interfere with the process, he wants INEC to be totally independent for them to do the right thing.

“He is ready to invest and provide all the resources for them to be totally independent,” he said.

He recalled that Buhari almost did not purchase the nomination form but for the intervention of well wishers.

Onyeama assured Nigerians that Buhari is going to practice what he preached.

“He has been to Supreme Court to challenge election, he has been on the other side; he appreciates more than anyone else the importance of free, fair and transparent election.

“He always said that the electronic process that has been introduced helping to take away the human element has been the game changer, something that he loves, so he believes in free and fair election,” he said.

Onyeama said that Buhari would show good example to West Africa and other countries by practicing what he preaches.

He said that the president led the intervention of ECOWAS in the Gambia and sent special envoys to Mali, Guinea Bissau and Togo to ensure democratically elected government in those countries

“He has sent me as a special envoy to ensure that the electoral process in Guinea Bissau is on course; he sent me as a special envoy to Mali get the opposition to accept the court ruling after the election.

“He sent me as envoy to Togo to help them to push for a transparent and fair process as they are also prepared for legislative election.

“He went to the International Criminal Court as a special guest of honour and delivered a speech to the world about the importance and the rule of law and fair election,” he said.

Obi maintained that in every situation, there would be something positive to learn from it, adding that Mbaka had always spoken from the “higher perspective of wisdom.”

The PDP vice presidential candidate implored the laity to always remember their priests in prayers, adding that it was wrong for priests to be attacked based on what they said on the pulpits.

He said, “Please let us leave Fr. Mbaka alone; our duty to him is prayers for God to lead him aright.

“While one may disagree with him, we should always acknowledge that he speaks and acts from the higher perspective of wisdom.”

Obi who noted that he had a reverend sister and a reverend father as elder and younger siblings respectively, added, “I have full respect for men of God and will always remember them in my prayers.

When they go wrong as humans, subject to human frailties, ours is not to castigate them, but to pray to God to lead them aright.”

Describing donations to churches as an “appreciation of God’s love and benevolence to us, Obi said, “they attract more rewards when done secretly.”

PoliticsSend Draft Bill On Minimum Wage To NASS, NLC Warns FG by akelicious(op): 8:13am On Dec 03, 2018
The Nigeria Labour Congress has described the Federal Government’s silence on the N30,000 minimum wage proposal as provocative stressing that it expected President Muhammadu Buhari to have sent a draft bill to the National Assembly weeks after report on the minimum wage was submitted to him.

Organised labour said it would not wait till eternity for the government on the issue.

In an interview with the Punch Newspapers, the General Secretary of the NLC, Mr Peter Ozo-Eson, said members of the union were becoming restless with the way the government had handled the issue.

He said that t unless government acted fast, the union might meet again to review government’s position and take necessary action to press home its demand.

But he did not say when the leadership of the union would likely meet.

Ozo-Eson said, “The latest about the issue of the minimum wage is clear. We expect that since the Presidency had already received our report, the President should have drafted an executive bill to the National Assembly on it so that they can begin to legislate on it.

“That has not been done even though we expect that it should have been done already. We cannot continue to wait forever.

“The next step as I said is for the President to transmit a draft bill to the National Assembly. The Federal government’s delay on the issue is provocative, our members are becoming restless and the federal Government must act fast on our report.

“If the delay continues, our next step will be made public after we meet again to review the steps taken so far.”
