CareerAnambra State Judiciary Workers Begin Indefinite Strike by akelicious(op): 12:15am On May 09, 2018
Workers of Anambra State Customary Court of Appeal and those of customary courts yesterday began an indefinite strike over non-refund of their housing and Pencom fund deductions.

The state chairman of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Mark Ifezue, addressed reporters yesterday in Awka, the state capital, on the action.

The labour leader said the union disagreed with the Customary Court of Appeal over the deductions, which he said lingered for about two years.

He said the deductions from the workers’ salaries were not remitted.

Ifezue said the remittances were either to the Federal Mortgage Bank, Trust Fund Pencom or into the account of the State Customary Court of Appeal.

According to him, when the workers found out that the funds were not remitted into any of the relevant accounts, they demanded immediate refund of their money.

The decision to begin strike, the labour leader said, was taken on May 5, after JUSUN’s congress, following what he called series of demands on the refunds without results.

Ifezue said: “The congress, therefore, resolved that the workers of the Customary Court of Appeal and the State Customary Courts should stay at home, pending when the money is refunded.”

Politics2019: My Re-election Bid Not For Personal Gain – Buhari by akelicious(op): 4:06pm On May 05, 2018
President Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated that the driving force for seeking public office should be to serve the people, improve their lives and not for frivolity or personal ambition.

This is contained in a statement signed by Malam Garba Shehu, his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity.

The statement said that Buhari made this known at the All Progressives Party’s (APC) Ward Congress held at Bayagida Model Primary School, Daura, Katsina State on Saturday.

The president also maintained that the passion to serve and see real changes in the lives of Nigerians informed his choice to join partisan politics in the first place.

He said the zeal inspired him to contest elections in 2003, 2007, 2011 and 2015.

Buhari said that his decision to seek a second term in office was borne out of a deep passion to serve Nigerians, and not for personal gains.

He noted that his administration had already started the process of ensuring fairness, justice and equity, in spite of challenges, and would work hard to consolidate on the gains.

“I am not in politics for fun, frivolity or to amass wealth, I have always been driven by a deep sense of commitment to make a difference to lives of our people.

“After my retirement from the army, or forceful retirement, I sat back and watched as events unfolded on the political turf, and realised the country needed an intervention for fairness, justice and inclusion of Nigerians in the issues that affect their lives,’’ he added.

The President called for patience, maturity and orderliness as the 2019 elections’ calendar begins to unfold.

He urged political parties, candidates and the electorate to put the country first and always remember that “victory ultimately belongs to God.’’

He said: “After going to the court so many times to challenge results of elections in 2003, 2007 and 2011, and going up to the Supreme Court, I concluded that ultimately it is God who determines who will win elections, and in 2015 I got here.’’

In his remarks, Gov. Aminu Masari of Katsina state said the process of electing the leaders of the party at the ward level was hitch-free, orderly and based on the constitution of the APC.

“What we have here are our leaders that were chosen based on consensus and we are happy that it reflects the will of the people and the APC constitution.

“We followed the process to also ensure that there is affirmation,’’ he said.

The Chairman of the Organising Committee for the Ward Congress, who is also the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Ahmad Usman El-Marzuq urged the party leaders to remain loyal and live up to expectations.

HealthFoundation Treats 38 Women With VVF In Kontagora by akelicious(op): 12:33pm On May 04, 2018
Sani Bello Foundation medical unit in Kontagora Local Government area of Niger said it has sponsored the treatment of 38 women living with Vesico-Vaginal Fistula(VVF).

Fistula is a hole between the vagina and usually the bladders which leads to continuous leakage of urine from the bladder into the vagina and urinary incontinence.

Mr Zakari Ikani, Director General of the Foundation, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kontagora on Friday.

Ikani explained that women were afflicted by the ailment due to early marriage and prolonged labour.
According to him, the foundation medical unit is fully committed towards providing qualitative health care delivery to VVF patients and to create job opportunities for them under its skill acquisition program.
”Most of the patients were abandoned by their husbands and left to their parents to carter for them, while most parents could not even afford to feed themselves talk more of settling their medical bills.
“We have equipped our medical unit with required medical facilities that would continue to meet the health care needs of our rural dwellers for free “.
He said that the foundation had embarked on aggressive sensitisation of rural dwellers on the negative effect on the health of young girls forced into early marriage.
He added that most of the cases would have been avoided if proper sensitization was done at the grassroots level .

PoliticsUbani Bares His Mind On Dino Melaye’s Re-arrest by akelicious(op): 11:29am On May 03, 2018
Barrister Monday Ubani, former chairman of Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Ikeja Branch, barred his mind on the re-arrest of Senator Dino Melaye yesterday by the Nigerian Police in Abuja on his Facebook wall.

The Public affairs analyst condemned the action of the police describing it as lack of respect to human rights and assault to dignity of Senator Dino Melaye.

Barrister Ubani said he will be doing a great disservice to this nation by supporting the ill treatment.

Below is the Facebook post:

They came for the Catholics, I did not speak up because I was not a Catholic; they came for the Protestants and as usual I did not speak up because I was not a Protestant. Eventually they came for the Jews and as is customary with me, I did not speak up because
I was not a Jew, and finally they came for ME and there was nobody to speak on my behalf!

If it is true that Dino Melaye was re-arrested at the court premises today in Abuja, the 2nd of May, 2018 after he met the conditions of his bail having been charged earlier, then we are descending big time to the abyss as a nation. TAKE NOTE THAT I am not a fan of Senator Dino Melaye and his likes in the National Assembly, but I Monday Onyekachi Ubani Esq will be doing a great disservice to this nation by supporting what is going on presently pertaining to the arrest, ill treatment, lack of respect to human rights and assault to dignity of Senator Dino Melaye by the Nigerian Police Authority.

No matter his offense, the LAW PRESUMES HIM INNOCENT UNTIL HE IS CONVICTED BY THE COURT IN THE LAND. This brutal ill treatment, assault to his freedom and dignity should be deprecated, condemned by well meaning Nigerians whose conscience is still ALIVE.

It was this week that policemen arrested and handcuffed LEGAL PRACTITIONERS who came to represent this same Dino Melaye . It took the intervention of over 100 lawyers to secure their bail at the magistrate court in Abuja after they have spent days in DETENTION.

The police were even antagonistic to the lawyers who came for their defense in COURT( of all places). I REPEAT WE ARE DESCENDING. IT WAS NOT RIGHT THEN AND IT WILL NOT BE RIGHT NOW. THOSE WHO HAVE EARS , LET THEM HEAR!

CrimeLagos Arrests 2,097 Environmental Offenders by akelicious(op): 4:57pm On May 02, 2018
The Lagos State Government has arrested 2,097 people for violating the environmental laws of the state.

The government also warned residents to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the metropolis, as such act would not be tolerated.

Commissioner for the Environment, Babatunde Durosinmi-Etti who issued the warning at a ministerial press briefing in Alausa, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria on Wednesday said his ministry had served 209 industrial facilities non-compliance notice.

He said that operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) arrested 2,097 environmental offenders, comprising illegal street traders, hawkers, highway pedestrian defaulters, environmental nuisance polluters and cart-pushers.

According to him, 136 offenders were engaged in communal service across the metropolis while others were arraigned for prosecution in line with the law at the Samuel Ilori Court, Ogba and Special Offences Mobile Court, Oshodi.
The commissioner stated that Lagos had strengthened its regulatory agencies to enforce compliance to standard and regulations, and curb all unsanitary behaviour by applying the required penalties, stating that monitoring, enforcement and compliance activities of the ministry and its agencies had improved in steering the state towards environmental sustainability.
“We have continued to monitor industrial facilities based on indicators such as Chemical Storage Permit, Environmental Audit Report, Petroleum Storage, Solid Waste Management and use of Personal Protective Equipment etc. Sixty-three percent of the eighty-one (81) industrial facilities monitored in the last one year were satisfactory while thirty-eight percent were unsatisfactory, thereby leading to the issuance of non-compliance notices to Two hundred and nine (209) facilities due to their recurring environmental issues,” he said.
Durosinmi-Etti said 76 percent of the 4,378 tenements and 597 private facilities monitored for compliance to wastewater policy of the Lagos State Government were served abatement notices while 60 percent of 1,185 complaints received on noise pollution were abated.

On the Cleaner Lagos Initiative, CLI, the commissioner said all hands were on deck to holistically address the challenges being experienced in waste management system, assuring that the issue would be addressed before the raining season.
He said the CLI was introduced last year to foster broad reforms in solid waste management, saying that the scheme remained the panacea for delivering efficient, effective and sustainable environment with its attendant benefits such as job creation, cleaner, safer and healthy environment.
The Commissioner said the government, in partnership with all stakeholders, was working hard to address the challenge, just as he assured that it would soon be a thing of the past.
“Very soon, Lagos will be very clean. We are working hard in partnership with all stakeholders to ensure we address the challenges. Both the government and the residents will jointly address the challenges and with Visionscape and the Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators working together, and the cooperation of the people, the challenges would soon be over.
“We know that our population is increasing as available statistics indicate that 85 people enter Lagos every hour and very few of them go back, and as more people come in, the waste generated in the State is also increasing but we are working to put the right infrastructure and equipment in place to address waste management.
“However, one thing I can assure the people is that we are working and in another one month before the raining season, it will be over. We know that the raining season is fast approaching and we are also preparing but I like to assure that soon, the challenges will be surmounted,” Durosinmi-Etti said.
He said 13,958 Community Sanitation Workers (CSW) have so far been employed to sweep inner streets in the 377 political wards in the State, with recruitment exercise still ongoing, adding that under the new arrangement, the sweepers would be directly supervised by the Ministry, while mechanized sweeping would be managed by three companies – Avatar, Wastercare and Corporate Solutions.
The commissioner said the PSP operators had now been charged with the responsibility of managing residential and general waste collection, while Visionscape now has the mandate of implementing waste management infrastructure development across the State, in addition to intervening in public waste collection to cover any service lapses that may occur.
On infrastructure, he said the retrofitting of Transfer Loading Stations in Agege, Oshodi and Lagos Island had attained over 80 per cent completion with plans for more, while Epe Landfill under construction had achieved remarkable progress with completion of the weigh-in bridge, adding that government in partnership with the private sector would soon commence another engineered hazardous landfill in Erikiti, Badagry.
Durosinmi-Etti said the State Government rapidly increased access to safe drinking water by adding 10million gallons per day to bring water supply to 220MGD within the last one year, adding that a total of 48 mini waterworks were rehabilitated in Ikeja, Surulere, Onikan, Epe, Ikorodu, Dolphin, Ajangbadi, Victoria Island, VI Annex, among others.
He said the 220MGD was in addition to Iju and Adiyan Phase I major waterworks with 45MGD and 70MGD capacity respectively, while work was ongoing on 70MGD Adiyan Water Treatment Plant Phase II, 4MGD Ishasi waterworks, 2MGD Imeke-Iworo waterworks and 2MGD Oke-Odo mini waterworks.

“On behalf of the entire members of the House of Representatives, I want to use this occasion to, once again, underscore the importance of workers to the growth and prosperity of our dear nation, Nigeria.
“We see the struggles you go through to survive on wages that can barely last through the first week of the month. “We see your dedication to doing your bit in ensuring that Nigeria continues to run effectively in spite of unfavourable conditions.
“We commend your courage, your commitment to service and nation building and urge you to continue supporting government policies and agenda.
“I assure you, on this occasion, that the National Assembly will give expeditious passage to the Minimum Wage Bill whenever it is transmitted by the executive and any other initiative that will promote the welfare of the Nigerian worker.

“We will support it wholeheartedly,”

PoliticsHow FG Compromises Security, By Wike by akelicious(op): 5:14am On May 01, 2018
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has blamed the collapse of national security on political interference by the Federal Government.

Wike made this claim when the participants of senior executive course 40, 2018-study group three from the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru visited him at the Government House Port Harcourt yesterday.

He alleged that the deliberate political action of the Federal Government compromises the security architecture of states. According to him: “What we have seen in most cases is that security lapses are a result of political interference. “

Wike explained that the case of Rivers State is exemplified by the transfer in and out of Rivers State of newly promoted Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr. Akin Fakorede who was indicted for manipulating election between March 29 and April 4, 2018.

He drew the attention of the course participants to the indictment of ACP Fakorede as contained on page 66 of INEC Report into Rivers Rerun Elections for electoral fraud, violence and ballot box snatching and abduction of INEC officials.

“The man was given special promotion as a reward for the job he did for the Police in Rivers State during the rerun. He has been transferred back to the state in preparation for their planned manipulation of the 2019 General Election.‘’

On the newly formed State security outfit, the Neighbourhood Safety Corps, Wike said that the agency was established to complement the work of federal security agencies. According to him, the organisation was fashioned in line with an existing model in Lagos State under the leadership of respected retired military, police and paramilitary senior officers.

Meanwhile, the Ken Saro-Wiwa Associates have threatened that the Ogoni people will not participate in the 2019 elections, if there is no adequate security in the area.

The National Coordinator of the group, Chief Gani Tobpa, lamented that the last elections in Ogoni land witnessed high level of insecurity, querying that if everyone dies, who will vote for the contestants.

HealthPolio Immunisation: Kogi Targets 900,000 Children by akelicious(op): 6:28pm On Apr 30, 2018
The Kogi Government said on Monday that it would immunise 900,000 children in remote communities across the 21 Local Government Areas of the state.
The government said that by so-doing, it would maintain its nine-year-old polio-free status.
Dr. Abubakar Yakubu, the Executive Director, Kogi State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (KSPHCDA) made this known to newsmen on Monday in the course of monitoring the on-going National Immunization plus Days exercise in Lokoja.
Yakubu, who visited parts of Ajaokuta and Lokoja Local Government Areas, noted that in addition to the administration of oral polio vaccines, children were given pentad 3 immunisaton.

He added that the agency was doing its best to maintain the zero polio status of the state by ensuring that all immunisation campaigns were treated with utmost sense of “urgency and dedication”.

Abubakar noted that Kogi had not recorded any case of polio in the last nine years, saying that no effort would be spared to consolidate on its Polio-free status.

“Kogi state has been polio free since 2009 and we want to consolidate on that achievement by ensuring that this exercise is taken to every nook and cranny of the state.

“We hope to have immunised over 900,000 children in hard-to-reach communities across the 21 local governments of the state by the end of the exercise,’’ he said.

He further told the newsmen that the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency had set aside the “Immunisaton-plus Days” to ensure that children in remote communities were immunised.

Yakubu praised the agency’s staff and development partners for their commitment to the eradication of childhood killer diseases in the state.

PoliticsWhy I Want To Be Nigeria’s President – Ahmed Buhari by akelicious(op): 1:59pm On Apr 29, 2018
Mr Ahmed Buhari, the initiator of Ahmed Buhari Youth Movement, says his interest in vying for the office of the president of Nigeria is informed by the need to have a generational change in the leadership of the country.

Buhari, who is a geologist by training, stated this while speaking with newsmen on Sunday in Ilorin on the sidelines of his meeting with members of the Ahmed B. Youth Movement in Kwara.

According to him, the youths have lost hope in the current system of governance which has created a wide gulf between the young and old generation, stressing that it was high time the young people participated in politics and governance of the country to avoid vacuum in government.

“Most importantly, our involvement is going to be an enlightenment to young people that it is true that we can do something.

“To let them know that the reason we are doing this is because we understand that if we do not allow responsibility to be transferred from one generation to next generation at the right time, a vacuum will be created.

“If this vacuum is created, a lot can go into that vacuum. It could be herdsmen; it could be Boko Haram; it could be kidnapping; it could be baby factory; it could be armed robbery, it could be a lot of things.

“It is because these young people do not feel any need for them to be looking up for something that hope is lost and so we are trying to revamp young people to understand that they have to participate in politics.

“While they participate in politics, they shouldn’t make money politics a front burner for them. They should be more concerned about how they will even support aspirants so that when they get to the office, those aspirants will be answerable to them.

“This will kill totally the whole idea of cabalism and see how we can have aspirants who will emerge and become answerable to those people who elected them because if you do support an aspirant, he is going to come back to you and support you, not by giving you the money you gave him, but by giving you the best of democracy.

“What we mean is that we want to have a country that would be formed on a united ground.

“ United ground in the sense that no matter where you come from, regardless of your ethnicity; regardless of your religion; regardless of your social status; regardless of your political party; ideological affiliations; regardless of gender; regardless of your age; you will want to be part of a new Nigeria.

“The new Nigeria that we are looking for is new Nigeria that every one of us would claim without mentioning where we are from.

“We want a new Nigeria where there won’t be a discussion on state of origin, quota system and all of those things that always tend to divide us will be eradicated,” he said.

PoliticsNo Fifth Term For Ekweremadu, Says APC by akelicious(op): 5:29am On Apr 29, 2018
Enugu State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Ben Nwoye, yesterday, boasted that his party would stop the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, from enjoying a fifth term in 2019.

Nwoye, who spoke to journalists shortly after his endorsement for a second term as state chairman by the Enugu East Local Government chapter of the party, dismissed recent comments credited to Ekweremadu during a rally of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to the effect that APC chieftains were working with the state government due to the achievements of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

He said: “Those things are fallacies. What people see and don’t understand is that a lot of people left PDP and joined APC, big men, well known big politicians. The fact that people switched party doesn’t mean they stopped having friends with those who were their friends in their original party. So, if you see some of our big members being friendly with those in government, it is misconstrued.

“In the last (local government) election, did we not campaign? Why did they run away with the result sheets? Journalists, you are aware that there were no result sheets; they ran away. They caused chaos and ran away. So, if you say we are working together, we contested in 17 local government councils, we contested in 260 wards, and we will contest governorship in the 2019 election. We are going to present credible candidates.

“The reality on the ground is that this election will be the most fiercely contested in the history of Enugu State because we are on ground. We have most of the biggest financiers. We will challenge. And I will bet you that Enugu West senatorial seat (Ekweremadu’s), for sure, will fall into the hands of APC in 2019.”
On his endorsement for a second term as state chairman, Nwoye said he was humbled. He assured the people that he has gained experience in the last four years and that things can only get better if he is re-elected.
“I’m very grateful but I’m more proud of them for endorsing Emma Eneukwu, who is our zonal vice chairman. Emma Eneukwu’s endorsement shows that Nkanu people have spoken. When the Nikes speak, Nkanu follows Nike. The Nike ancient kingdom is the eldest in Nkanu land,” he said.
Earlier, the chairman of Enugu East chapter of APC, Emma Onyeka, announced the endorsement of Nwoye, the South East zonal vice chairman of the party, Eneukwu, and President Buhari.

PoliticsAir Force Destroys Boko Haram Logistics Base At Tumbum Gini by akelicious(op): 10:57am On Apr 28, 2018
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) said its Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation LAFIYA DOLE has successfully destroyed a Boko Haram Terrorists (BHT) logistics base at Tumbum Gini in the northern axis of Borno.

AVM Olatokunbo Adesanya, NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, who confirmed this in a statement issued on Saturday, in Abuja, said the operation was carried out on April 27.

“A Nigerien Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft conducted the Battle Damage Assessment (BDA) for the mission.

”The BDA revealed that the first wave of a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Alpha Jet aircraft strike on the location totally destroyed the vehicles and other logistics items at the place thereby further degrading the terrorists’ capabilities.
”Furthermore, at the end of the attack, the entire BHT location was engulfed in fire and all the terrorists in the location were neutralised,” he said.

PoliticsHerdsmen: Buhari urges implementation of ECOWAS protocols by akelicious(op): 2:39pm On Apr 26, 2018
President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday blamed the non-implementation of two ECOWAS protocols on free movement of persons, goods and services for the lingering herders and farmers conflicts in West Africa.

Buhari said this while declaring open the ECOWAS Ministerial Meeting on Conflicts between Herders and Farmers in the region organised in partnership with the countries’ ministries of Agriculture and Interior in Abuja.

Represented by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, the president stated that the protocols were necessary in the discussions to proffer lasting solution to incessant killings in the region as a result of the conflict.

“Two ECOWAS Protocols are critical to the conversation that we are going to have here today.

“The 1979 Protocols of free movement of persons, goods, capital and services and the protocol relating to transhumance in 1998.

“Regrettably, what we have been confronted with over the years is the failure to fully follow and enforce the terms of these protocol and in some cases the failure to activate sections of the protocols.

“So that where for example transhumance certificates are to be used and endorsed by medical or immigration officials this is not the case; this has to change.

“We can no longer continue to tolerate the undocumented movement of persons that simply contribute to the escalation of our security challenges.

“We must be able to track the movement; we must ensure that the protocols are complied with and relevant sections are activated,’’ he said.

The President said the vision of integration of the ECOWAS founding fathers must not be allowed to be derailed by a failure to comply with the safeguards and conditions that they in their wisdom and foresight embedded in the protocols.

He said that was why Nigeria had taken the lead in organising the conference bringing together senior government officials with oversight for agriculture and internal security in the region and beyond to proffer solutions to the lingering problem threatening national security and regional security as well.

Buhari noted that the economic implications were quite worrisome considering that no fewer than 70 per cent of the ECOWAS made a living by agriculture.

According to him, many of the countries in the region are already struggling with food security and the violence if unchecked will lead to catastrophe.

The President stated that the grazing of cattle along long distances and the whole transhumance experiences needed to be reviewed in favour of ranching.

He said ranching was a more productive way of breeding cattle rather than work long distances, adding that the region must explore all the options and look for new and creative solutions to resolve the problem.

He said the solution should be holistic from law enforcement to climate change and reforms in current methods and practices of crop and animal production.

“We simply must move with the times and modernise our thinking and approach to the issues that face us,’’ he stated.

Buhari said that the federal government and states were collaborating to work out an acceptable plan to quell the conflicts by proper management of land resources.

“We just concluded the work plan jointly put together by the States and Federal governments on the sustainable resolution of herders/farmers’ conflicts and we are now at the point of implementing that plan,’’ he said.

Gov.Umaru Al-Makura of Nasarawa State, told correspondents that he was grateful to the Ministry of Interior and other sister ministries backing the conference as well as the regional governments for participating.

“There could not have been a better time for this conference having been bedeviled throughout the sub region with the crisis of farmers/herdsmen.

“There is the need for cooperation/collaboration and synergy amongst all the states and countries within the sub-region to find lasting solutions to this problem.

“We have been with the farmers/herdsmen crisis from time immemorial and as things are changing daily, urbanisation, population explosion, limited land for farming and difficulties in getting grazing to take place effectively due to climate change.

“There is need for time-to-time for collaboration between the constituting states to come together to find lasting solution,’’ he said.

The governor assured that governors, especially those whose areas were being affected by the crisis, would ensure the implementation of decisions of the conference to curb the conflict.

BusinessInnoson Chief’s Absence In Court Stalls His Trial by akelicious(op): 1:46pm On Apr 26, 2018
The Lagos high court has adjourned the case involving Innocent Chukwuma, CEO of Innoson Motors, following his absence and pending outcome of the petition against the presiding judge, Mojisola Dada, before the National Judicial Council (NJC).

On February 12, Innoson petitioned NJC to investigate the circumstance leading to Dada’s issuance of a bench warrant against him and ordering his arrest.

This followed the suit filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against him bordering on forgery.

In the resumed hearing on Wednesday, the lead prosecuting counsel to the EFCC, ABC Ozioko, maintained that despite the petition, the judge could still go on with the prosecution.

But lead counsel to Innoson, George Uwechue, raised the issue of the court’s lack of jurisdiction to entertain the case and that he was ready to move that application.

Citing the case of Igbeke v. FRN [2015], H, Uwechue insisted that Chukwuma was not compelled to appear in person to answer the forgery charge levelled against him.

However, prosecuting counsel A.B.C. Ozioko did not allow Uwechue read his address, insisting that the trial of the automaker must continue.

He also demanded Innoson appear in person for arraignment.

PhonesWhatsapp Increases Minimum Age In Europe To 16 Ahead Of Data Law Change by akelicious(op): 6:34pm On Apr 25, 2018
WhatsApp, the popular messaging service owned by Facebook Inc (FB.O), is raising its minimum age from 13 to 16 in Europe to help it comply with new data privacy rules coming into force in May.

WhatsApp will ask European users to confirm they are at least 16 years old when they are prompted to agree new terms of service and a privacy policy provided by a new WhatsApp Ireland Ltd entity in the next few weeks.

It is not clear how or if the age limit will be checked given the limited data requested and held by the service.

Facebook, which has a separate data policy, is taking a different approach to teens aged between 13 and 15 in order to comply with the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) law.

It is asking them to nominate a parent or guardian to give permission for them to share information on the platform, otherwise they will not see a fully personalised version of the social media platform.

But WhatsApp, which had more than 1.5 billion users in January according to Facebook, said in a blog post it was not asking for any new rights to collect personal information in the agreement it has created for the EU.
“Our goal is simply to explain how we use and protect the limited information we have about you,” it said.
WhatsApp, founded in 2009, has come under pressure from some European governments in recent years because of its end-to-end encrypted messaging system and its plan to share more data with its parent, Facebook.
Facebook itself is under scrutiny from regulators and lawmakers around the world since disclosing in March that the personal information of millions of users wrongly ended up in the hands of political consultancy Cambridge Analytica, setting off wider concerns about how it handles user data.
WhatsApp’s minimum age of use will remain 13 years in the rest of the world, in line with its parent.
GDPR is the biggest overhaul of online privacy since the birth of the internet, giving Europeans the right to know what data is stored on them and the right to have it deleted.
Apple Inc (AAPL.O) and some other tech firms have said they plan to give people in the U.S. and elsewhere the same protections and rights that Europeans will gain.
European regulators have already disrupted a move by WhatsApp to change its policies to allow it to share users’ phone numbers and other information with Facebook to help improve the product and more effectively target ads.
WhatsApp suspended the change in Europe after widespread regulatory scrutiny.
It said on Tuesday it still wanted to share the data at some point.
“As we have said in the past, we want to work closer with other Facebook companies in the future and we will keep you updated as we develop our plans,” it said.
Other changes announced by WhatsApp on Tuesday include allowing users to download a report detailing the data it holds on them, such as the make and model of the device they used, their contacts and groups and any blocked numbers.
“This feature will be rolling out to all users around the world on the newest version of the app,” it said.
The blog post also points to safety tips on the service, such as the ability to block unwanted users, and delete and report spam.

Director/CEO, Kennedy Uzoka, who have been managing activities of this great institution for the past two years. We, the shareholders are impressed with results that you have recorded so far and the achievements that the bank has recorded under your leadership, especially the sterling contributions of our subsidiaries in Africa. We are especially impressed with what the bank has been doing in Africa. It has gone a long way to show that good things can come from Africa. UBA has showcased a high level of ingenuity in the banking space, and we are glad for how this is translating into gains for our business.”

Another shareholder, Mr. Timothy Adesiyan, commended the bank for being the first bank in Africa to embrace Artificial Intelligence technology into the banking space, through the introduction of UBA’s Leo. Also, speaking at the meeting, Nonah Awoh, who commended the bank for the performance, equally tasked the management to do more to ensure that all the African subsidiaries contribute at least 50 per cent to the bottom-line.

In his address to shareholders, Elumelu, said the bank recorded strong growth in both top and bottom lines in 2017.
He said: “Overall, our bank grew profit before tax by 16.1 per cent to N105.3 billion. More importantly, the bank remains financially strong, our balance sheet is well protected and our commitment to exceeding regulatory requirements remains. We recently opened for operations in Mali, because that economy is a viable one and would contribute to our bottom-line. Mali will benefit from UBA’s presence there while UBA will also benefit from Mali.”

On his part, Uzoka said: “UBA has built a great brand that is recognised all over the world, and because of this, we have decided to be outside-focused rather than inside-focused. Being outside focused means we are concentrating on putting our customers first in all we do by making sure that we do things from the customers’ standpoint.”

PoliticsNEMA: Presidency Uncovers Plot To Use Idps To Stage Protest by akelicious(op): 5:34am On Apr 22, 2018
A state governor has been identified for involvement in an alleged plot to rubbish Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on the operation of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

Osinbajo heads the board of NEMA which has distributed relief materials to more than 16 states in the last one year.

Also uncovered by the Presidency, is an alleged plot by some people to instigate Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to stage a phony protest to the National Assembly against the NEMA board.

The House of Representatives Committee on Emergency and Disaster Preparedness is currently investigating the activities of NEMA since 2017.

The committee is probing the disbursement of the following by the agency : N5.9 billion food intervention in the North East; N3.1 billion food intervention in the North East; N1.6 billion for Libya returnees; N1.5 billion for flood intervention in 16 states; alleged N400million demurrage incurred on 6,779 metric tons of rice donated by China ; N800 million demurrage on donated rice by China and unaccounted N10 billion released from Ecological funds.

The committee is already on the war path with the Osinbajo-led NEMA board over the suspension of six directors of NEMA for alleged fraud.

The directors were allegedly indicted and recommended for suspension by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Suspended are Director of Finance and Accounts, Akinbola Hakeem Gbolahan; Ag. Director, Special Duties, Mr. Umesi Emenike; Director, Risk Reduction, Mallam Alhassan Nuhu; Pilot in-charge Air Ambulance and Aviation Unit, Mr. Mamman Ali Ibrahim; the Chief Maintenance Officer, Mr. Ganiyu Yunusa Deji; and the Director of Welfare, Mr. Kanar Mohammed.

While the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Winifred Oyo-Ita claimed that the suspension of the six directors by the NEMA board was in order, the Director-General of NEMA, Mustapha Maihaja said that N1.5 billion suspicious contracts were awarded by the former Director-General, before his own assumption of duty.

The Nation gathered that N1.1billion contracts were awarded between January 1 and March 31, 2017 whereas Maihaja assumed office on April 21, 2017.

The DG said that “Presidency made sure that all contracts in respect of other votes were approved by the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP).

The presidency believes the ongoing probe is aimed at rubbishing the Vice President who was summoned last week.

A highly placed source said yesterday that a state governor is ‘coordinating’ the plot against Osinbajo.

“The forces against the Osinbajo-led board are being coordinated by a governor whose interest is to rubbish the VP ahead of 2019 poll,” the source said.

“The governor was uncomfortable with the composition of NEMA board and he felt one or two members, allegedly opposed to him, should not be on board.

“Osinbajo has however refused to bow to pressure from the governor to drop the affected NEMA members.

“The same governor, who was said to have had some issues with the presidency in the past few months, had been allegedly working against President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election.

“Their plot is to use NEMA as a spring board for the attack against top presidency officials especially the Vice President. They want to rubbish the President and his VP to prove that the Buhari administration is not transparent.

“I think everything boils down to the countdown to 2019 poll and some people are out to fight dirty.”

The source said that the Presidency was the approving authority for all releases and expenditures of NEMA before the inauguration of NEMA Board about three weeks ago.

“So, if the House is investigating NEMA activities, their target is Osinbajo,” the source said.

“Initially, they claimed that NEMA mismanaged the 6,779 metric tons of rice donated by the Chinese government without knowing that the offer was accepted by the Ministry of Budget and National Planning and when the ministry had no votes to clear the rice, it transferred the cost of the demurrage to NEMA.

“The responsibility was passed over to NEMA on August 14, 2017 and it only received the original documents in December 4, 2017 and Jan. 2018.

“The ongoing cleansing of NEMA of bad eggs and sleaze was said to have affected some forces including top officials of the agency, contractors, some lawmakers and others benefitting from the status quo.

“Unknown to them the presidency is determined to get to the roots of the N2.5billion fraud in NEMA.”

It was also gathered that security agencies have stumbled on plans by some anti-Buhari forces to deploy IDPs to stage a protest against NEMA and its leadership.

“They have paid some agents that will coordinate the protest in Abuja. But the Federal Government is probing those behind this protest,” the source said.

At its sitting on Thursday, Ali Isa said: “”We have no other interest; we have no business with any agency

PoliticsWith Far-reaching Measures, Economy Now On Positive Track, Says CBN by akelicious(op): 4:24am On Apr 22, 2018
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has said measures taken so far to stimulate growth in the country have put the economy on the right track. The Acting Director, Corporate Communications, CBN, Mr. Isaac Okoroafor, said this during an interview with journalists on the side lines of the IMF -World Bank meetings in Washington DC.

Okoroafor recalled that about a year ago, when the country’s delegation attended same meetings in Washington, the story was different, as almost all economic indicators were negative. He pointed out that since the second half of last year, the story had changed, with measures such as the Investors’ and Exporters’ (I&E) window, aggressive development finance intervention, among others.

“If you recall, then, the Nigerian economy was going through one of its worst moments,” Okoroafor stated. “Inflation was high, the foreign exchange market was in turmoil and the economy was in recession. Also, we faced a crunchy foreign exchange scarcity, and everybody swooped on Nigeria. Our reserves were down and the whole situation was ominous. I can recall that at that time, we said we knew what we were doing and everybody was saying we were wrong. But we waited for time to play out.”

Okoroafor added, “Today, I am happy to report that time has proved that we were right, and they (the IMF and World Bank) were wrong about our economy. We have our reserves strong, over $47 billion, inflation has gone down to 13.34 per cent, foreign exchange market is now very stable, and growth has taken off -we are out of recession.

“It’s all positive news. We needed to underscore this top, say that, yes, we were right, we knew our economy and we have done what was then wrong which we believed is the right thing and we are happy to report that everything we have done proved to be right and we will continue to do that.”

The central bank spokesman assured that the bank would fund the real sector more vigorously, saying the issue of productivity is very important.

He explained, “We have launched the Agri-business, Small and Medium Enterprises Investment Scheme (AGSMEIS), which will support production by small and medium enterprises. We have launched the Accelerated Agriculture Development Scheme, which will further boost employment, especially youth employment.

“We know we are on the right track, we will continue to build up reserves. We have maintained stability in the foreign exchange market for the past nine months. Industrial production has improved because we have steadily supplied the manufacturing sector with foreign exchange for their raw materials and machinery.

So, we are happy that this year, not a negative mention has been said about Nigeria. It is left for them to admit that we were right and they were wrong.”

Furthermore, Okoroafor noted that the CBN had achieved a considerable level of exchange rate stability, pointing out that since its introduction, the I & E window has continued to attract foreign exchange inflows.

“We have achieved stability in a significant way and we are working towards a time when all the sectors of the market converge at one point. As time goes on, we will see it play out as we promised last year,” he said.

Responding to a question on why the central bank has left interest rate high, he said: “Like the CBN Governor said, it is the opinion of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) that will determine where the rates will be.

“We will look at the needs of the economy and continue to see how the rates will be adjusted. Members of the MPC will look at the sectors of the economy and adjustments will be done accordingly.”
