PoliticsYou Can’t Kill To Please God, Says Buhari by akelicious(op): 2:04am On Jan 03, 2018
President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday lambasted religious fundamentalists killing human beings in order to please God, saying that they were ignorant as they could not please Him by murdering people.

He said his administration would investigate and bring to book all perpetrators of mayhem across the country. The President said that no religion or civilised culture would tolerate violence, especially the taking of another life.

According to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President spoke at separate meetings with the Qadiriyya Muslim Movement in Africa and the Izalatul-Bid’a-Wa-Iqamatus-Sunnah at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Buhari said anyone, or group of persons, who unleash violence on the innocent in the name of a movement, cause or religion lack understanding of the ordinances of God.

“You can’t kill to please God; and I know no religion tolerates the taking of another person’s life in the name of a religious movement.

“There is never a justification for killing any member of the society. We have been tackling the Boko Haram menace, and we have made significant impact, and we will extend the measures to stop all wanton killings,’’ he said.

The President said the security apparatus would be consistently reviewed to check threats to the peaceful co-existence of all Nigerians, and ensure the safety of lives and properties.

He told the delegation that his political party, the All Progressives Congress, campaigned on three issues, noting that his government had been consistent in ensuring that it “provides adequate security, fights corruption and stimulates the economy for creation of jobs.”

“Our priority is to also ensure that everyone in the country has something to eat. We are really concerned about the underprivileged.

“Graciously, God has been hearing our prayers. In the past two years, we have had bountiful harvest due to favourable conditions. All over the country, we have reports of farmers posting good harvests,” he said.

On corruption, the President said the security agencies would continue to expand their dragnet to ensure that sanity was restored into public offices.

“Justice will be done to all in the war against corruption. As religious leaders, I urge you to tell your followers to respect the rights of others.

“Those that stole from the public can no longer sleep well in the country today. When they run abroad, they cannot take their landed assets with them.

“We will, in all cases, have them return what they looted,” he added.

In his remarks, the leader of Qadiriyya Muslim Movement in Africa, Dr. Keribullah Kabara, said the movement would continue to uphold the President in prayers for good health and longer life to pursue the course of building a stronger nation that caters for all citizens.

He said the reports of improved security in the North-East and better harvests for farmers across the nation were clear signs of God’s favour on the government, urging the President to continually look unto God.

In an interview with State House correspondents shortly after meeting the President, Yassin Garba Maisikeli, said their mission was to pray for the President’s health as well as the health and progress of Nigeria.

PoliticsNigeria Makes Top Class In World Bank 2017 PPP Ranking by akelicious(op): 7:52am On Jan 01, 2018
Nigeria is one of the top four leading voices in Public Private Partnerships (PPP) in the 2017 ranking of the World Bank Group (WBG).

Yelena Osipova-Stocker, Communications Officer for Infrastructure, PPPs and Guarantees Group of the WBG, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

She said that 2017 was a busy year in the world of infrastructure and public-private partnerships at the World Bank Group.
Yelena said that Nigeria’s Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) came top four in the leading voices in the field category.
She said that Nigeria was recognised for being the first country to launch the PPP Contracts Disclosure Web Portal.

Reacting to this, the acting Director-General, ICRC, Chidi Izuwah, said that the portal had improved investor confidence in the country.
He said that within the first 100 days of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, he had earlier stressed his commitment to attracting the private capital and expertise needed to address Nigeria’s infrastructure deficit.
He said that the president’s commitment led to a renewed engagement between the World Bank Group and Nigeria to enhance the attractiveness of PPP in the country.

PoliticsBranson: $9.2bn Returns Makes Nigeria’s Mini Grid Lucrative by akelicious(op): 7:33am On Dec 30, 2017
British business magnate and founder of Virgin Group, Sir Richard Branson, has offered a rare business review on the huge opportunities that global investors could take advantage of in Nigeria’s renewed efforts to connect over 80 million of her citizens currently without any form of electricity.

Writing on his personal blog, Branson, described recent reports that Nigeria’s mini grid electricity sector could yield profits in excess of about $9.2 billion to investors, as encouraging.

Although, he did not state if he would be making any investments in the sector, Branson, however suggested to investors in mini grid power systems to head to Nigeria in 2018 if they were interested in taking from the $9.2 billion potential profit it offered.

“Energy access in Africa is close to my heart. Bringing clean, renewable power to people instead of building coal-fired power stations is absolutely essential if we are going to tackle climate change,” said Branson,
He explained that: “Developing off-grid alternatives to complement the grid could create a $9.2B/year market opportunity for mini-grids and solar home systems that will save $4.4B/year for Nigerian homes and businesses. And there is large potential for scaling – installing 10,000 mini-grids of 100kw each can occur for 10 years and only meet 30 per cent of anticipated demand.

“The combination of large revenue opportunity (USD $9.2 billion per year), a supportive government, and a dynamic entrepreneurial environment unite to make Nigeria the ideal location. If you are an impact investor that wants to make a difference in energy access next year, I’d suggest a trip to Nigeria.”

He stated that even though investors have viewed the market for mini-grids as being too risky, making gaining access to project financing rare, and market rate debt expensive, he was, “really thrilled to hear this week that the Rocky Mountain Institute may have cracked the problem with their partners, the Nigerian Rural Electrification Agency and the World Bank.”

According to him, the organisations released an independent investment brief that touts Nigeria as the nation which can now unlock the nascent mini-grid market in Africa in 2018.

“Nigeria is the biggest and most attractive off-grid opportunity in Africa. It has the largest economy in Sub-Saharan Africa (GDP of $405 billion), a population of 180 million people, and flourishing growth (15 per cent a year since 2000).

“A significant amount of the economy is already powered largely by small-scale generators (10–15 GW) and almost 50 per cent of the population have limited or no access to the grid. As a result, Nigerians and their businesses spend almost $14 billion annually on inefficient, polluting and noisy generation that is expensive, and suffers from poor quality,” Branson said in his review.

PoliticsImo Residents Demand Improved Governance In 2018 by akelicious(op): 7:00am On Dec 30, 2017
Ahead of the New Year, Imo residents have appealed to all tiers of government to provide good governance.

The residents made the appeal in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Owerri on Friday.

The respondents lamented that life have gotten worst in the outgoing year.

They said many families have been deprived the joy of having family members around for the Yuletide festivities owing to the scarcity of petrol.

Mrs Maria Onyewuchi, a housewife, said her children who planned to come home for the New Year had been forced to change their plans because of the high cost of transportation.

She appealed to the Federal Government to adopt measures aimed at eradicating fuel scarcity permanently.

Onyewuchi also appealed to the government to do more to boost agriculture as the cost of food is also on the increase.

Mr John Uzoma, a civil servant, also appealed to the federal government to checkmate the excesses of state governors.

Uzoma said the excesses of state governors had led to the impoverishment of employees of state civil service.

He lamented that the governors “wilfully owe civil servants, choosing instead to lavish funds on frivolous expenses”.

He also advised the federal government to demand more accountability from the state governors, adding that it will end corruption.

Mr Joe Onuchukwu, also a civil servant, urged the federal government to create more jobs to curb the migration of graduates.

Onuchukwu said lack of job opportunities has resulted in desperate attempts to leave the country for imaginary greener pastures by youths.

He also called for the sanitisation of the civil service by ensuring that over aged employees are retired to make way for younger people.

Ms Lilian Ekah, a student, called for improved facilities in higher institutions to enable students get proper education.

She appealed to the government to find common ground with the Academic Staff Union of Universities to end incessant strikes in tertiary institutions.

SportsVan Dijk A Good Investment, Says Guardiola by akelicious(op): 6:13pm On Dec 29, 2017
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola believes Liverpool have spent well in paying £75million ($100million) for Virgil van Dijk, because he thinks high-quality players work out cheaper in the long run.
Guardiola was interested in signing Van Dijk from Southampton, but missed out after Liverpool agreed a deal on Wednesday, with the player making the move officially when the transfer window opens on January 1.

City’s manager has spent heavily on defenders himself since his arrival at the Etihad Stadium in July 2016.
Before the start of this season, he brought in Benjamin Mendy from Monaco in a deal that could be worth £52million, Kyle Walker from Tottenham for an initial £45million, and Danilo from Real Madrid for £26.5million.
That came a year after he spent £47.5million on signing England centre-back John Stones away from Everton.
“Liverpool took an amazing player,” said Guardiola.

“Van Dijk is an exceptional central defender, that’s a price we’ll see (again) in the future.

“Sometimes the cheaper players are more expensive than the expensive players. If he played six or seven years at a high level it would be cheap. If he played not well, more expensive.
“John Stones, when he came here, people said he was too expensive. Now he’s too cheap. It always depends on the value of what happens on the pitch.”
– ‘Nico has been amazing’ –

Victory at Crystal Palace on Sunday would be City’s 19th league win on the trot, equalling Guardiola’s personal record, set with Bayern Munich four seasons ago.
But the City boss has warned his players they will lose a league game sooner or later, and they have to be ready to bounce back.
“I have told the players many times that we are going to lose a game. It’s important how we react,” said the 46-year-old Spaniard.
“The problem is not losing a game, it’s how you react and immediately win again. That’s the most important thing in any league if you want to win the title.
“It will be news, OK, finally Man City lose one game. That will not be big news. The big news will be to win again immediately.
“I insist many times, this isn’t real or normal, we are going to drop points and that’s when I want to see my team.”
Guardiola suggested much of City’s recent form is down to Argentinian centre-back Nicolas Otamendi, who has been their key defender during the injury absences of Kompany and Stones.
“We have a super man in the team, as Nico Otamendi helped us absolutely,” Guardiola said.
“Without Nico, it would not be possible, what we have done.
“Everyone speaks about a bit of players such as Raheem (Sterling), like David (Silva), like Kevin (de Bruyne), like Sergio (Aguero), and they deserve it, but if I would like to point to a player who deserves full respect, for what they have done until now, it’s Nico.
“Nico has been amazing. He is a guy who even with pain in the ankle, in the knee, in the back, he always fights. He’s one of the hugest competitors I’ve ever seen in my life.

PoliticsGani Adams Is The Greatest Yoruba Man Of His Generation – Gbenga Daniel by akelicious(op): 11:45am On Dec 28, 2017
Former governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, has described the Aare Ona Kakanfo-designate and national coordinator of the Oodua Peoples Congress, Otunba Gani Adams, as the greatest Yoruba man in his generation.

Daniel, who said his emergence as the 15th Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba Land was not a mistake, said he shared similar ideological views with him, especially in the area of Yoruba emancipation.

A statement issued by Adams’ Chief of Staff, Segun Akanni, on Wednesday to newsmen, quoted Daniel as expressing these views during a courtesy call on him by Adams.
“I welcome you to Asoludero, your second home. I want to specially congratulate you. I am happy with the decision of Iku Baba Yeye, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, who many don’t know I have a special relationship with as a close friend of my late father.
“It is not misplaced to have made you the 15th Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba Land.
“I have come to see you as a very principled man who does not worship money; I have seen you rubbish people with money over your principled stand.

“I have not seen a greater Yoruba man in your generation, you have galvanised our people through the OPC and lately the Oodua Progressive Union now in 79 countries. You have become a phenomenon, a perfect example of a self-made man. We are for you,” the statement read.

The chairman and chief executive officer of the Nigeria Police Broadcasting Service (NPBS), Edirin Jerry Wesley has revealed that the NPBS from 2018, would be policing the nation through effective communication.

Wesley also said with the takeoff of the NPBS, ugly incidences of crimes across the country would be a thing of the past.

According to him, the NPBS will cut across general security information on air, land and sea, saying that homeland security policing, border policing, and airport policing would be its primary focus.
Part of his statement made available to newsmen in Abuja, was in reaction to criminal incidences witnessed during the Christmas celebration.
Wesley further said the NPBS will help Nigerians conduct free and fair elections in the country with the assistance of Nigerians.
He appreciated President Muhammadu Buhari and the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, for the invaluable contributions made in ensuring the security of lives and property in the country.
Wesley also reacted to the ongoing fuel scarcity across the country, noting that issues associated with hoarding of fuel and people causing nuisance around filling stations across the country would be wiped off.
He added that kingpins, pirates, pipeline vandals, and those creating religious problems in the country would have no hiding place with the effective communication of NPBS.
“NPBS has a whole package of crime reportage and emergency response such as the NPBS Television, NPBS Radio, NPBS Online, including the Emergency Command and Control Communication Center.
“This maiden Nigeria Police Communication outfit would be replicated across the length and breadth of Nigeria.”
“It will enhance the effectiveness of tackling crime in whatever form and from the 36 states of the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
“With the takeoff of NPBS, Boko Haram attacks would easily be reported and the security agencies would be deployed to crime scene; it would also be effective in reporting crime in whatever form and from wherever across the country.
“Whether it is Boko Haram attack as reported on Christmas Day or the clash in Bwari during the celebration of Christmas, kingpins, pirates, pipeline vandals, and those creating religious problems in the country and other pockets of violence, including the issue of fuel scarcity, all these would be a thing of the past,” Wesley said.

PoliticsNCS To Train 1m Students In IT Usage by akelicious(op): 3:19pm On Dec 27, 2017
The Abuja Chapter of Computer Society of Nigeria ( NCS ) plans to train over one million students across the country in Information Technology ( IT )

The Chairman of the chapter, Mr. Rex Abitogun disclosed this on Wednesday in an interview with newsmen in Abuja.

The Nigeria Computer Society ( NCS ) was formed in 1978.

It changed its name from the Computer Association of Nigeria ( COAN ) to become the umbrella body of all IT professionals in Nigeria. ·

The society was established having realised that most of the software applications used in most of the government establishments and industries were not those developed locally.

PoliticsScarcity Ploy To Increase Fuel Price –labour by akelicious(op): 7:54am On Dec 27, 2017
The United Labour Congress (ULC), yesterday, said the present scarcity of petroleum product is a plan by the Federal Government to increase pump price in January. This is even as it has warned that it would resist the attempt.

ULC said its investigation has revealed that the present shortage was as a result of government’s failure to provide importers with the foreign exchange (forex) needed.

The ULC President, Joe Ajaero, said reports reaching the union from affiliates showed that the debacle was clearly a manifestation of another failure of leadership in Nigeria.

He said: “It cannot be blamed on any panic buying or hoarding as the product is seriously in short supply. Importers are not bringing in enough products, while NNPC is not in any position to meet the demands of the market.

“Importers cannot bring in products because of logistic bottlenecks created by the government at the point of procuring forex, while NNPC lacks the capacity to bring in more products that are needed this period.”

He wondered why a government, at this period with the exponential increase in movement across the length and breadth of the country as the citizens relocate in celebration of the season, and its subsequent implications for demand on domestic fuel consumption, did not take adequate measures to ensure that the gap that would be created will be filled by increased supply of the product to the market.

“Paradoxically, this is the period they have chosen to play games; withhold forex from importers and reduce the amount NNPC was making available. The consequences of the decreasing availability of the product in the market and the increasing demand for same at this period meant that the citizenry are faced with double-jeopardy,” he lamented.

Ajaero said ULC suspected that government was playing its old trick prior to raising the price of petroleum products, warning that Nigerian workers under ULC will work assiduously, severally and across the country to resist such insensitive intentions.

According to him, this has become a game politicians play against the people, “but we vow to work to ensure that the outcome this time will be in favour of Nigerian workers, Nigeria and Nigerians.”

The ULC President said labour hoped, once again, that the crisis would not be a prelude to the 2012 gimmick as giving Nigerians sorrow and bitterness during this period has become the sole aim of various governments, maintaining that Nigerian workers and masses deserve a better treatment than the excuses with ominous implications.

“It is indeed surprising that a government that raised the pump price of petroleum products, especially fuel, to N145/litre with the promise never to allow the return of fuel queues, is sitting on its rump and giving excuses why the same queues have returned with a vengeance.

“We believe that there is no excuse strong enough for this government to give over this worrying situation. Government should fulfil its side of the bargain. That is the only way to go. It is even worse trying to deflect the blame and push it on the unions in the sector, which is not true as this truly shows continuous disrespect for the citizenry that elected these same leaders into office.”

He stressed that this was not the kind of end of year gift that Nigerians deserve as leaders in other climes give their citizenry end of year gifts by passing legislation and enacting policies that would ease their burdens, but not so in Nigeria.

PoliticsTroops Recover 200 Cows From Rustlers, Kill Three Terrorists by akelicious(op): 5:19pm On Dec 26, 2017
The Nigerian Army said on Tuesday that troops of the Operation Lafiya Dole operating in Borno State have recovered over 200 cows from Boko Haram members, while three of insurgents were killed during encounter with soldiers.

According to the Director of Army Public Relations, Brig. Gen. Sani Usman, the troops also recovered weapons of different calibre from the Boko Haram fighters.

Usman said in a statement in Abuja that “troops of 21 Brigade, Operation Lafiya Dole, in conjunction with elements of 121 Battalion, on Friday, December 22, 2017, laid an ambush for Boko Haram terrorists at one of their suspected crossing points near Firgi, Bama local government area of Borno State.

“During the ambush, the troops neutralized one of the terrorists suspected to be an expert Improvised Explosives Device (IED) expert, while other terrorists escaped with gunshot wounds. The gallant troops recovered one gas cylinder suspected to be for IED, two water bottles and one motorcycle.

“In another development, troops of 3 Battalion, 22 Brigade, Operation Lafiya Dole on Saturday, December 23, 2017 following a report that suspected Boko Haram terrorists have rustled and carted away over 200 cows at Makandari Village in Kala Balge local government area, mobilized a fighting patrol which pursued the terrorists to Beneri village where contact was made.

“The patrol team engaged the terrorists and neutralized two of the criminal Boko Haram cattle rustlers. They recovered one AK-47 Rifle, an empty Magazine, two Motorcycles and one National Identity Card. In addition, the gallant troops also recovered all the rustled cows and returned to the rightful owners.’

Meanwhile, the Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Major Gen. R. I. Nicholas has given insight into how soldiers repelled the attacks of some Boko Haram terrorists at Molai area, outskirts of Maiduguri on Christmas day.

He said in a statement: “This evening, there was an attempted attack by suspected Boko Haram terrorist who came with Person Borne Improvised Explosives Devices (PIED) and gun trucks to steal foodstuff and also attack troops around Molai area, outskirts of Maiduguri, but met stiff resistance from troops of Operation Lafiya Dole who repelled them and secured the community.

“No loss of lives to own troops and normalcy has since been restored.

“Meanwhile troops have been on the trail of the remnants of the terrorists. Unfortunately, during their retreat, they set two vehicles on fire and some thatched houses at the outskirts of the city gate.

BusinessSanusi II Wades Into Dangote, BUA Crisis by akelicious(op): 7:18am On Dec 26, 2017
The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has intervened in the raging controversy between Dangote Group and BUA Group over a mining site located in Okpella area of Edo State.

Africa’s richest man and chairman of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, owns Dangote industries limited, the producer of Dangote Cement, while business mogul, Abdulsamad Rabiu owns the BUA Group, producer of BUA cement. Both are natives of Kano.

The conflict over the rightful ownership of Mining Lease No 2541 between the duo has been on in the past few weeks, with both sides engaging in accusations and counter accusations, including name dropping in the media.

Obviously disturbed by the pace at which the war is taking, Emir Sanusi II stepped in by calling the two multi-billionaires to order so as to end the war, which is said to be doing more damage to their relationships and even affecting their business associates.
Akelicious gathered that Emir Sanusi II, who by virtue of his position as the traditional ruler of Kano and father to all, opted to intervened on the matter with a view to finding a lasting solution to the scuffle.
A competent source told our correspondent that the royal father asked the two industry magnates to bury their hatchet and desist from further engaging in media war.
According to the source who did not want to be named in print, the Emir told the businessmen that the raging controversy was counterproductive.
It was gathered that the Emir who is out of the country at the moment, assured that once he returns from his foreign trip, he would call the two sons of Kano to a round table.
“The Emir was disturbed over the matter and has asked them to put an end to the media war. In fact, he has sent emissaries to both men and will interface with them as soon as he returns”, the source said.
Our source further noted that the Emir and by implication, the Kano Emirate council, is worried that the two multi-billionaires are engaged in needless scuffle, which could have been handled in a subtle manner without recourse to rancour.
In the last one-month, the two cement giants had been embroiled in a war of some sort over the ownership of a mining site, which is already a subject of litigation.
The rift took a deeper crisis dimension recently when it escalated with new allegations and counter-allegations by the two companies. Both companies have been accusing each other of using force among other illegal activities.
Several interventions by the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, the Edo government and other stakeholders have proved futile.
The two companies got their licences from third parties; while BUA obtained its licence from the old Bendel Cement Company through its privatisation, Dangote Group obtained its licence from a company called AICO (Ado Ibrahim & Co) Limited.
The disputed area is at the boundary between Kogi and Edo States, but officials have said that mineral titles are not by state boundary but by the geographic coordinates, which means they can fall in any state.
The Mining Cadastre Office, however, is insisting that BUA overlapped the AICO’s title and that it has no case.
Meanwhile, the case has brought to the fore the weak administration of data of mineral sites in the country, as the titles claimed by both parties are from the same ministry of Mines and Steel Development.
While the BUA group presents mining rights in ML 18912 and ML 18913 in Obu, Okpella in Edo State, Dangote claims right in ML 2541 located in Okene, Kogi State.
Both parties presented evidences that the area where the mining is taking place belong to them and was duly signed by the mining authorities, the ministry of Mines and Steel Development and the Mining Cadastre Office.
The disagreement between the companies compelled the Federal Ministry of Mines and Mineral Development to issue a directive that the Obuh mine, located in Okpella, Edo State should be shut down.
Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, disclosed this while meeting with members of the Okpella community at the Government House.
“There are multiple claims and they have all gone to court. We have a letter from the Federal Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development instructing that the party currently mining that particular site should vacate it, pending the outcome of the decision in court”, Obaseki said.
Prior to this action, BUA Group had accused Dangote Industries of using armed personnel to take over the site and mining illegally.
The company also accused the Ministry of Mines and Steel of frustrating its operations, saying it had written to the Presidency, seeking its intervention.
Dangote Industries, in its defense had claimed BUA Group was illegally mining on a site it had made all the required payments for.
Group executive director of Dangote Industries, Edwin Devakumar, at a press conference in Lagos, stated that the conglomerate had acquired Mining Lease No. 2541 from AICO Ado Ibrahim & Company Limited sometime in 2014.
BUA Group started business in 1988 as a Private Limited Liability Company specializing in the importation and marketing of iron and steel, agricultural and industrial chemicals. Since then it has rapidly developed into a fully-fledged, diversified business with a stake in a wide range of business sectors.
The Dangote group was established in May 1981 as a trading business with an initial focus on cement, but has since diversified over time into various sectors of the economy, including port operations, road construction, salt refining and sugar refining. The group is one of the largest conglomerates in West Africa.

PoliticsNNPC, DPR Uncover Illegal Fuel Reservoirs In Abuja by akelicious(op): 7:01am On Dec 26, 2017
Speaking at the site of the mini depot, the Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Dr Maikanti Baru, said it was saddening to make such discoveries in the city center when less than 500 meters away, motorists were on endless queues.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that hundreds of jerry cans, 200-liter drums, and 500 liter tanks were uncovered in a sting operation by the team in the city center.

According to him, the perpetrators have caused untold pain and hardship on Nigerians during a crucial season as Christmas.

“In the war room (where crucial issues are discussed during fuel crises), we asked ourselves why the situation (fuel queues) persists.

“We got an intelligence report of these mini depots and as you can see, these golf cars that are supposed to have 40 litres have tanks that can take 200 liters of petrol.

“This other one is a mini depot. Although some of the products are diesel, the DPR says it is unauthorised. We have over 50 days supply of diesel and so there is no reason to hoard the product.’’

The Abuja Zonal Controller of DPR, Mr Mohammed Abba, told newsmen “we have arrested 20 people in connection with those who sell in jerry cans in Zone One alone and their facilities.

“We are handing them over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, because the DPR has no capabilities to prosecute.

“We will test for forensic analysis and we will pursue the case to court’’.

Mr Aminu Abdullahi, Assistant Commandant-General Operations, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps while receiving the perpetrators confirmed receiving the 20 persons.

“We have received the suspects and DPR will be called in for forensic analysis to test what was handed over,’’ he said.

A survey of filling stations by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in the FCT revealed that motorists are lamenting the harsh conditions on fuel queues on Christmas Day.

Some of the filling stations visited by NAN were the NIPCO along Jabi, Oando in Zone 1, Texaco on the Airport Road and NNPC Mega Station along Zone 1 and on the Kubwa Expressway.

NAN reports that though there was presence of security agents in almost all stations visited, the queues were rowdy with angry commuters screaming themselves down.

NAN also reports that at the NNPC mega station, the rowdiness was caused by two cars on an illegal queue that blocked the main queue and insisted on entry.

The presence of three security agencies comprising a military man, a policeman and a civil defense man did nothing to intimidate the driver who kept saying ”It is sad that I have to be at a filling station today.

“My family is at home waiting for me to come and take them out. This is unfair, sad and cruel. This is my worst Christmas’’.

At Jabi, NAN reports that the security men were dressed to the hilt with helmets as if ready for chaos but there were still very long illegal lines blocking the exit to NIPCO.

A motorist, Mr Salau Agidingbi, told NAN, “it is these illegal queues that cause chaos during crisis such as these. they block flow of oncoming traffic, block the exit for drivers that have got fuel after queuing up for hours and want to be served immediately they get into the station”.

At Texaco, a pump attendant, who did not wish to be named, told NAN “we close at seven before because of security issues but because of the people traveling we have to extend our time till 9 p.m. or 10 p.m.

Another motorist, Celia Tamuno told NAN “this Christmas is horrible. See me here. It is annoying and the lines are so long. Other mothers are at Wonderland, other fun places and I’m here. This is heart-breaking’’.

FoodJailed Saudi Royal Can Buy Freedom For $6bn by akelicious(op): 5:01pm On Dec 24, 2017
Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, detained in a corruption probe, can buy his freedom for a price fit for one of the world’s richest men - $6 billion.

The 62-year-old Syracuse University grad was among 11 princes and dozens of foreign ministers rounded up last month amid an investigation led by the kingdom's powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Alwaleed would only have to give up a third of his estimated $18.7 billion fortune to win his release from a makeshift prison at the posh Riyadh Ritz-Carlton.

But the Saudi royal is instead seeking to persuade the government to accept as payment a large chunk of his company, worth about $8.7 billion, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Alwaleed is apparently playing hardball, insisting that he stays on in a leadership role in the new state-backed company.

“Keeping (the empire) under his control, that’s his battle,” a source told the Journal.

HealthFoundations Provide Free Medicare For 400 Prison Inmates In Delta State by akelicious(op): 7:01am On Dec 24, 2017

Okowa said the joint partnership for the 2017 programme was aimed at accommodating more beneficiaries.

The founder of Isioma Okobah Foundation, Dr. Isioma Okobah, said the desire to give inmates a sense of belonging and promote love and care for the less privilege in the society, inspired by the vision of the 05 Initiative, motivated the outreach, which received additional impetus by medical students from Georgia State University in the United States.

PoliticsPhotos:ogun Communities Send Sos To Amosun Over Land by akelicious(op): 4:57pm On Dec 21, 2017
Residents of Igbin-Ojo and seven other communities in Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State have appealed to Governor Ibikunle Amosun to save them from the activities of alleged land grabbers.

The call was made in a statement issued by the community leader, (Baale) Ademola Tiwalade Adisa, a copy of which was made available to Daily Sun.

Adisa alleged that former chairman of the Ewekoro Local Government Area, Mr. Dele Soluade, came into their land on November 17, 2017, with a group of people and a bulldozer and invaded the land.

Narrating the people’s experience in the hands of the alleged land grabbers, Adisa said, “When the news got to me, I hurriedly ran with some elders to see what exactly was going on, and I asked him why he was invading the land. He told me it was governor’s order and brought a paper he described as government paper.

“Also, he came on November, 24 and December 8, respectively, with a larger group of people and they were mapping out some portions of our land.

“We had to inquire from him why he was encroaching into our land because earlier, a large portion of our community land had been acquired by the Federal Government of Nigeria, as we were informed, for a proposed Cargo Airport and we have not received any compensation in this regard till date”, he explained.

Adisa further alleged that the former chairman brought out that same paper he described as government paper for them to sign.Narrating their ordeal on December 8, Adisa continued, “When Mr. Soluade came again, with some men of Rapid Respond Squad (RRS), who were heavily armed, they forcefully arrested some of us and pushed us into a waiting van and drove off over a fairly long distance in a thick bush.

“He forced me and my elder brother to sign an undertaking at gun point. I had to sign it because we were scared. Nobody knew our whereabouts, and I had to sign the undertaking, stating that we would not disturb him anymore on our land anytime he works there.

” As law-abiding citizens, we have contacted our lawyer who advised us against violence, and in line with his further advise, we have reported the matter to the nearest Police post and have confirmed the status of our land with the Ogun State Government, since we had surveyed the land before the unlawful entry and illegal mapping out exercise of Mr. Dele Soluade.
“We have just obtained a land information certificate dated 13th December 2017, which confirms clearly that our entire community land covered by the Perimeter survey plan is free completely from all known acquisitions.

“We, therefore, appeal to the Governor of Ogun State, His Excellency, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, to come to our aid before Soluade wipes our communities out in his desperation to grab our lands.”

But when contacted on the issue, Hon. Soluade laughed off the communities’ claims, describing the allegations as ‘unfounded.’

He said he never invaded the communities’ land, insisting that his action was based on Governor Ibikunle’s instruction, saying the land in question is part of the cargo airport project being embarked upon by the state government.

“Our action was on the governor’s prompting. It was the governor that sent me. And the project is a Federal Government’s own. Anybody who feels aggrieved should see the governor, not me,” Soluade said.

Politics20 Corps Members Get Service Extension by akelicious(op): 4:40pm On Dec 21, 2017
The National Youth Service Corps ( NYSC ), in Nasarawa State, says 20 corps members are to have an extension of service due to alleged misconduct during the service year.

The state Coordinator, 2017 Batch B Stream 11, Mrs Zainab Isah, disclosed this on Thursday at the passing out parade in Lafia Local Government Area.

She said the affected corps members committed various offences bordering on misconduct during the service year.

Isah said the punishment meted out was based on the gravity of their offences according to the by-law of the scheme.

“We have 20 corps members that have disciplinary cases.

“Some of them missed one allowance or the other because they were not around.

“Some traveled without permission or they traveled with permission but extended their stay without informing the officers,’’ she said. She also explained that the allowances they missed would be given to them during their extension of service.

According to her, some got two weeks extension, some three weeks, while others got longer due to the gravity of their offences.

It depends on the misconduct and what the NYSC by-law stipulates as punishment,” she said.

Isah explained that the decision to extend the service year of erring corps members was the recommendation of the State NYSC Disciplinary Committee which will serve as a deterrent to others.

According to her, 1,957 corps members successfully completed their service year and have been issued certificates.

She commended the corps members for their patriotism and perseverance during the year.

She, however, advised them to be self-reliant and employers of labour rather than wait for white collar jobs.

“You should go ahead with what we taught you in camp, just continue with those training and I am sure those training will see you (through) in no distant time,” she said.

She thanked the state government for its support to the scheme and urged for its sustenance especially in the area of engagement of corps members with significant positive impact in the area of their primary assignments.

According to her, five corps members distinguished themselves based on the contributions they made in their places of assignments.

“They did exceptionally well but we are yet to submit the list to the state government because the NYSC governing board is yet to hold a meeting on it,”she said.

EducationLASU Crisis: ASUU Demands Independent Panel Of Inquiry by akelicious(op): 4:35pm On Dec 20, 2017
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Lagos Zone, has called for an independent panel of inquiry to look into the lingering crisis in the Lagos State University (LASU) before the crisis grinds the academic activities in the university to total halt.

Also, the ASUU has urged Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to call to order, some of his functionaries, who the Union alleged, were allegedly working in tandem with the Vice Chancellor of LASU and some members of Governing Council, to fuel the crisis in the institution.

The ASUU equally called on Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State to reverse the sacking of over 150 academic staff of the Kogi State University over alleged lawful strike to press for the demand of backlogs of many months salary owed them.

Coordinator, Lagos Zone of ASUU, Prof. Olusiji Sowande, made these calls, on Wednesday, at a press conference held at the ASUU Secretariat, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta.

Sowande, who read from a text entitled: ‘Impunity and Crude Political Onslaught on our Union in Lagos and Kogi State Universities’, said the press briefing was at the instance of the national body of ASUU, aimed to expose alleged victimisation and intimidation of ASUU members in the two state universities.

Flanked by other ASUU coordinators from the zone, Prof. Sowande also alleged that the unjust dismissal of the chairperson and the vice chairperson of ASUU-LASU branch as well as the continuous intimidation of other union members by the management of the university, was a deliberate move to decimate the Union.

He further stated that other committed members of the branch had been penciled down for outright dismissal on various trump up and spurious allegations by the university administration, while the purported dismissed members of the union were daily being hounded by the police on the directives of the LASU VC, Prof. Lanre Fagbohun.

Sowande, who said the university’s ASUU’s problem with the VC began when it demanded for constitution of a functional Budget Monitoring Committee (BMC), evidence of proper utilization of N1.3b NEEDS Assessment Revitalization fund released to the university in 2013 among other issues, urged Governor Ambode and member of the public, to prevail on authorities of LASU to put a stop to what he termed “a high level of impunity and lawlessness”.

Speaking on the impasse in Kogi State University, the ASUU coordinator said the action of Governor Bello was an abuse of power and orchestrated plan to destroy the university education system in the state.

He, however, bemoaned a situation where the governor, who is a Visitor to the university, after sacking the union staff, recruited untrained academics, NYSC members and NCE holders as their replacements.

Sowande continued, “The wide condemnation from different quarters following the proscription of ASUU-KSU activities is enough evidence that Nigerians know their rights. We therefore demand the reversal of this dastardly act and the immediate recall of the unjustly sacked academics in KSU. Our union will use all possible lawful and political means to fight the injustice and lawlessness in KSU”.

“ASUU, Lagos Zone joins the Education Right Campaign (ERC) in calling for an independent panel of inquiry on the unfolding crisis in LASU with a view to resolving it before the crisis becomes a monster that will be difficult to curtail. We call on the Lagos State governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode to call some of his functionaries to order as there are evidences that they are working in tandem with the VC of LASU and some members of the governing council to fuel the crisis in LASU,” Sowande submitted.

BusinessAhead Christmas: Foodstuff Prices Drop In Enugu by akelicious(op): 10:17am On Dec 20, 2017
Barely one week to Christmas festivities, prices of foodstuff, especially local rice, have decreased considerably in some markets in Enugu State, it has been reported.

A survey conducted by a NAN correspondent in some markets in Enugu on Wednesday showed that different brands of local rice, including stoned and de-stoned as well as short and long grains, have flooded some markets in the state.

A 50 kilogramme bag of local de-stoned rice sells between N10,000 and N12,000 as against N12,000 and N15,000, depending on the brand while a 25kg bag is sold at between N5,000 and N6,500 as against N7,000 and N9,000 sold two months ago.

A rice farmer in the state, Mr Paul Edeani, attributed the development to the massive production of rice by farmers in the rural areas.

Edeani said that rice farmers in the state had leveraged on the diversification policy of the Federal Government to grow more rice.

He said that the patronage had been massive as residents of the state had resorted to using local rice due to improvement in quality.

The farmer, however, expressed dismay at the deplorable condition of roads in some rural areas in the state, noting that it affected evacuation of agricultural produce from hinterland to the cities.

One of the buyers, Mrs Joy Uba, said that she preferred local rice to foreign ones because “it is tasty, affordable and de-stoned.’’

But surprisingly, the price reduction did not affect the price of foreign rice as a 50 kg bag still sold at between N17,000 and N19,000 depending on the brand.

A rice seller at the Artisan Market in Enugu attributed the problem to high transportation fares from Lagos to the state as well as issues with the Nigeria Customs while importing the product.

Meanwhile, price of tomatoes has continued to drop as a basket cost between N6,000 and N8,000 as against N12,000 and N15,000 sold during the rainy season.

A cross section of the dealers at Akwata Market in Ogbete, Enugu, said that the reduction in price was because it was the season for the product.

According to Uju Nwokeoma, tomatoes are harvested during dry season and this makes them available and affordable for everyone, unlike onions which grow during rainy season.

However, prices of life chicken have soared across the state as a middle size goes for between N1,700 and N2,200 while big sizes go for between N2,800 and N4,000 as against N2,000 and N3,000.

A chicken seller, Chima Ejiofor, attributed the increase to rising cost of feeds in the market.

Similarly, prices of salad condiments, mainly carrots, green pepper and peas have also gone down across major markets.

PoliticsPreach Against Corruption In Mosques -buhari To Clerics by akelicious(op): 3:36am On Dec 20, 2017
President Muhammadu Buhari has charged Muslim clerics and Islamic religious leaders in the country to preach against the evils of corruption in their mosques.

The president equally urged them to pray for the survival of the country, just as they prayed for his recovery when he was sick.

Buhari, represented by his Special Adviser on Political Matters, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, spoke yesterday at the 55th anniversary and national conference of the League of Imams and Alfas in Yorubaland, Edo and Delta states, held in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

The event was also used to officially turban the former Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Sarafa Tunji Ishola, as the Baba Adinni of Yorubaland, Edo and Delta states.

The president, who lauded the League for holding together 55 years on, told the religious leaders to always impress it on their followers that corrupt persons will not enter Al-Janah.

He noted that prayers have played a major role in keeping the country together. He insisted that members of the league must continue to pray for the survival of Nigeria and also denounce corruption at every given opportunity.

“Corruption is one of the major problems facing our country. Always preach against corruption in your mosques. Corruption does not pay, impress it on your congregation that anyone who engages in corruption will not enter Al-Janah.

“You should also continue to pray for the unity and survival of Nigeria. This is because prayer is key, your prayers actually worked for me as I recovered from illness,” Buhari said.

The president, therefore, enjoined the League not to shy away from passing suggestions, recommendations and advice capable of helping the country across to him. Declaring the conference open, Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, asked the religious body to always inculcate Islamic values in Muslim Uma’ah.

Amosun, who noted that the gathering depicts oneness and unity which Islam preaches, urged the League to always offer prayers on unity, peace and progress of Nigeria.

In his welcome address, President General of the League, Sheikh Muhammed Bello, disclosed that the conference was first of its kind since the body was founded by late Islamic scholar, Sheikh Adam Abdulahi.

He said the conference will focus on the unity among Muslims in the South West and the country at large.

PoliticsConsumers Urge FG To Sack Non-performing Discos by akelicious(op): 3:09am On Dec 20, 2017
Electricity customers in Anambra State have called on the federal government to consider sacking distribution companies (Discos) that have performed below expectation.
The consumers insisted that there was need to change non performing Discos, citing Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) as one of those that have commenced unnecessary exploitation of customers.

The customers made the call during a protest against the services of EEDC in Ekwulobia, Aguata council of the state yesterday, saying EEDC was not supplying sufficient power; not giving them pre-paid metres and charging exorbitant bills.
The aggrieved customers who were no fewer than 500 carried placards with various inscriptions like ‘Attention Sir Emeka Offor Help the poor masses’, ‘EEDC give us prepaid meter’, ‘Non-Indigenes need pre-paid metres’.

Others were ‘Ekwulobia traders need pre-paid metre’, ‘Give us good electricity supply’, ‘Is Ekwulobia different from other towns?’ among others.
Speaking on behalf of the protesters, their leader, Mr. Ebere Nnopu, said the ‘killer bills’ system of the EEDC was no longer acceptable, and urged them to metre their customers expeditiously.

Nnopu, who described the harsh treatment of EEDC as economic sabotage, said most businesses in the area which rely on electricity for their operations had died and many people rendered jobless.

“We cannot take this poor service anymore, we are suffering, no power, no prepaid metres and the bills are crazy. We want the EEDC to buckle up or handover to who can serve us better,” he said.
Addressing the crowd, the Ekwulobia EEDC Network acting Manager, Mr. Ogbonna Kanu, said they had noted their grievances and promised to address them.
Kanu said the low energy supply from EEDC was not their fault as they distribute only from the electricity made available to them by the generating and transmission firms.

CrimeSalary Officer Bags 35yrs Jail For Stealing N2.5m by akelicious(op): 2:22am On Dec 20, 2017
Former salary officer with the Benin Owena River Basin Development Authority (BORBDA), Mr. Monday Isiorh Okoh, who enriched himself in a corrupt manner, has been sentenced to 35 years imprisonment.

He was accused of mismanaging the agency’s N2.5 million by operating multiple bank accounts

Okon was dragged before Justice E. Edigin of High Court 3, Benin City, Edo State, by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

The commission, in a 12-count charge, accused the convict of using his position to corruptly enrich himself thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 19 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000, and punishable under the same section.

ICPC’s counsel, Peter Malan, told the court that Okoh committed the offence between 2006 and 2007 by paying himself monthly salaries from the coffers of BORBDA through multiple bank accounts in First Bank, United Bank for Africa and a community bank.

He was said to have perpetrated the crime in collaboration with Enudi Lazarus, a cashier in the agency, who was also charged to court by the commission but was acquitted by Justice Edigin.

PoliticsSanusi Seeks Compulsory Drug Test For Political Appointees by akelicious(op): 6:37am On Dec 19, 2017
Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, yesterday advocated compulsory drug test for Nigeria’s leaders, even as he indicted politicians for using addicts as thugs. At the opening of a two-day Senate discussion on Drug Abuse Epidemic in Nigeria held in Kano yesterday, Sanusi said: “If we, the leaders, political office holders, ministers, emirs, senators and even Imams claim we are not part of the cause of this menace, we are deceiving ourselves because we have seen how governors parade these youths who are under the influence of drugs and move around in their convoys for security cover.”

Sanusi, who represented the Sultan of Sokoto, Dr. Sa’ad Abubakar, said: “You can count many of these thugs who are on the payroll of politicians, working for them and having access to security agencies. In fact, it is becoming profitable for these youths to work for these politicians who give them all they want rather than look for gainful employment. We should all be part of the solution. Any person willing to take up public office should therefore undergo a drug test. And if positive, should be denied the opportunity.”

The emir called for better funding for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency. He also blamed the abuse of psychotropic drugs in the North on poverty, illiteracy and broken homes.“You find a man who cannot care sufficiently for a wife getting married to two or three women, producing 20 or 30 children, and sending them out to care for themselves. This must stop. Until the government looks into family management and punishes anybody who treats family like slaves, the war against drug abuse might not be won,” Sanusi said.

Senate President Bukola Saraki pledged the commitment of the legislature to the enforcement of drug laws.Kano State Deputy Governor, Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, disclosed that the fight against drug abuse was beyond the capacity of the state and called for Federal Government support.

According to him, “Kano has the largest share of all the challenges, considering our population and commercial base, yet we have just one rehabilitation center. The government set up a task force. Arrests were made. Drugs worth N4.6 billion have already been destroyed. But this has little or no effect on what is on ground.”

PoliticsDPR Seals 16 Filling Stations In A/ibom by akelicious(op): 2:07pm On Dec 18, 2017
The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) said it had sealed 16 filling stations for selling petrol above N145 per litre pump price.
The Operations Controller of DPR in Akwa Ibom, Mr Tamunoiminabo Sundaye, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Eket on Monday.
Sundaye, however, said that some of the affected stations had paid the penalty and had signed undertaking with the department “to be of good behaviour’’.
He said that the department had begun close monitoring of the filling stations to ensure that they reversed their pumps to dispense petrol at N145 per litre.
He also said the agency had engaged private depot owners to ensure that they sold the product at ex-depot price to marketers.
The controller deplored the conduct of independent marketers, who accused of taking advantage of recent “upset in the oil market’’ to exploit the public by selling petrol above regulated rate.
He alleged that the marketers were creating artificial scarcity of the product in the state.
“I will not really say that there is much scarcity in Akwa Ibom because there is no queue.
“What happened is that our brothers and sisters took opportunity of what happened in Lagos and Abuja, which of course is normal now.
“Our people and their normal way of doing things, started selling above government approved pump price and we have sealed a number of filling stations over it,’’ Sundaye said.
He appealed to marketers to do the business in accordance with rules and regulations of the petroleum sector, saying that the present administration would not tolerate sharp practises in the industry.
According to him, any marketer caught would face the wrath of the law.
Sundaye warned marketers not to indulge in under-dispensing of the products in the state, saying that they were would face penalty.
NAN reports that most filling stations in Akwa Ibom are selling petrol between N160 per litre and N170 per litre.

ComputersHow To Download Windows 10 For Free, But Only Until December 31 by akelicious(op): 1:47pm On Dec 18, 2017
@ www.Akelicious.com
Ever since Microsoft launched Windows 10, it’s made the OS officially or unofficially available.

Officially, you stopped being able to download or upgrade your system to Windows 10 on July 29, 2016. Unofficially, you can still download an upgrade license for the OS, but you’ve got to do it soon — as in before December 31, 2017.

Microsoft’s first giant push to convince customers to use Windows 10 was marred by an increasingly heavy hand as the campaign went on, to the point that it was both accused of malware tactics and later admitted to the same. We’ll never know exactly how many people avoided the upgrade for this reason alone, but some readers have indicated they were disgusted by the company’s behavior and refused to update.

Without implying that Windows 7 or Windows 8 users have to change their mind on that, it’s worth noting Windows 7 exits support by 2020, with Windows 8.1 out of long-term support in 2023. Windows 8 users have a little while, Windows 7 users have less. Microsoft also now locks out updates on Intel and AMD systems based on Kaby Lake, Ryzen, or Bristol Ridge, though there are some ways to bypass that block. Either way, Windows 10 may be a nice OS to have as an option, even if you don’t immediately start using it.

Here’s how you can still get a free copy of Windows 10 directly from Microsoft: Visit this webpage, attest that you use assistive technologies baked into Windows, and download the executable provided. It’s that simple.

As for why MS is pulling the rug now, I’m guessing the company has seen adoption rates from already running computers fall off over time. It’s been 2.5 years since Windows 10 launched, and MS was never going to leave this backdoor in its own policy open forever. If you haven’t upgraded by now, I suppose Microsoft thinks you’re never going to actually upgrade, and OEMs would be happier if MS shut down the option since it competes with their ability to offer Windows 10 as a new OS on their devices. Microsoft has also plowed ahead with the idea of Windows-as-a-service, in a bid to convince customers that being upgraded to the latest and greatest is the best way to be. Closing this loophole may be an attempt to shove customers towards new hardware as opposed to letting them upgrade existing installations — though again, I’m not sure the volume is high enough to matter either way.

Either way, the clock is ticking. You’ve got until December 31 to download.
